Colin Firth & Emma Stone in Woody Allen’s MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT at THE NEON!

August 14, 2014 By Jonathan McNeal

magic-in-the-moonlight-posterHello Everyone,

Woody Allen’s last three films – MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, TO ROME WITH LOVE and BLUE JASMINE – have all been big hits at THE NEON. On Friday, we will open Allen’s latest film – a 1920’s romantic comedy starring Colin Frith and Emma Stone – MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT.  BOYHOOD – the best-reviewed film of the year – will stick around for another week.

Synopsis for MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT: “Chinese conjuror Wei Ling Soo is the most celebrated magician of his age, but few know that he is the stage persona of Stanley Crawford (Colin Firth), a grouchy and arrogant Englishman with a sky-high opinion of himself and an aversion to phony spiritualists’ claims. Persuaded by his friend, Howard Burkan (Simon McBurney), Stanley goes on a mission to the Cote d’Azur mansion of the Catledge family: mother Grace (Jacki Weaver), son Brice (Hamish Linklater), and daughter Caroline (Erica Leerhsen). He presents himself as a businessman named Stanley Taplinger in order to debunk the alluring young clairvoyant Sophie Baker (Emma Stone) who is staying there with her mother (Marcia Gay Harden)…What follows is a series of events that are magical in every sense of the word and send the characters reeling. In the end, the biggest trick MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT plays is the one that fools us all.” (taken from Sony Pictures Classics) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

The FilmDayton Film Festival is just around the corner – August 22-24. The full schedule has been released and festival passes and single tickets are now available on-line. On Saturday, August 30 at noon, Roosevelt Class of ’67 will hold a fundraiser with a screening of BUCK AND THE PREACHER. “The film stars several icons who were at the beginning of their careers. Sidney Pointier stars as Buck. This was also the first film that he directed. Harry Belafonte stars as the preacher. His production company, Belafonte Enterprise produced the film with others. Ruby Dee was the wife of Buck. This film was set in Kansas Territory immediately following the Civil War in the late 1860’s. The cost is $20. This includes the movie, glass of wine, soda, and popcorn. Tickets are available at THE NEON.” (taken from press notes)

Mark your calendars now for The Dayton LGBT Film Festival – set for October 10-12. I met with the festival committee on Sunday for our epic, hash-it-out, planning meeting…and we came up with a really strong line-up of films. That said, I’m still awaiting confirmation from a couple titles before I can make big announcements. However, I can announce this – our Opening Night film – THE WAY HE LOOKS, sponsored by Square One Salon & Spa – is a huge crowd pleaser that has been winning awards all around the world. I hope you’ll hurry down to get tickets once they go on sale!

Thanks for your continued support!
Jonathan

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with many initiatives.

TED speakers have included Roger Ebert, Sheryl Sandberg, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Brian Greene, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. On TED.com, talks from TED conferences are shared with the world for free as TED Talks videos. A new TED Talk is posted every weekday. Through the Open Translation Project, TED Talks are subtitled by volunteers worldwide into more than 90 languages. Through our distribution networks, TED Talks are shared on TV, radio, Netflix and many websites.

Road Trip Food Adventure? Seafood Fest in Cincy Starts Tonight!

August 13, 2014 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Delicious, Whole Steamed Lobsters for $10.95

Whole lobsters for $10.95??

WHAT? .. No, the proper comment is YES! YES! YES!  Wanna take a drive?  It is time for a fish, mollusk, and crustacean FOOD ADVENTURE!

The Great Inland Seafood Festival takes place this Thursday through Sunday on the banks of the Ohio River.   More specifically, the fest is at Newport Landing in Newport, KY.

The Food Adventures Crew are the only ones in Dayton with the full scoop on this road trip !

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— The Great Inland Seafood Festival runs THURSDAY, AUG. 14 – SUNDAY, AUG. 17th.

 — The event is on Newport Landing, in Kentucky, literally behind the Newport Aquarium, in a parking lot, on the banks of the Ohio River

  — Admission is FREE !  We suggest getting there EARLY, whatever day you plan to go, to avoid crowds/lines.

Make sure you try one of the HUGE crabcakes

 — Festival Hours are:

          THURS 5pm-11pm

          FRI 5pm-11pm

          SAT: Noon-11pm

          SUN: Noon-9pm

Now, pay attention, because we are gonna tell you something most important.  We are gonna share with you our favorite things, because we are not ‘shellfish!” (groan)

MUST EATS:

 — WHOLE MAINE LOBSTERS FOR $10.95:  Need we say more?  Served with drawn butter, these are the tastiest items and best deal at the festival.  We usually eat 2 or 3 each.  Yeah …. Food Adventure problems.  They sell thousands of lobsters each year, so you don’t have to worry about clawing your way to the top to get one.

— THE COLOSSAL CRAB CAKES: Delicate enough to be delicious, but huge enough to curb your hunger, you gotta try one of these pan seared babies.

What about the other stuff? Well the world is your oyster.. There are fried seafood platters galore, and combos too.  Not all the food is fried, there are some steamed items like tilapia and other grilled items.

Be warned, seafood is expensive, so some of the sampler and combo plates can be $20.  So don’t be “crabby” when you see a few price tags.

Take it from us, eat some seafood, enjoy some free live music, check out the view, and even visit some watering holes at Newport Landing afterwards… Bring some friends, now is not the time to “clam up.”

In fact you can do what we like to do.  Go to the festival early, then explore Newport, and hit the festival again on your way to the parking garage at night.  Nothing says Food Adventures like live, whole lobsters at 10:00pm !  Hope to see you there if you make the drive.

There is something fishy going on here, but that’s how we like it at the Great Inland Seafood Festival.

Do you like seafood?  Want to SEE more FOOD?  Then “like” Food Adventures on Facebook by  clicking HERE.  It is a foodie’s paradise, and we aren’t just “fishing” for compliments.

Check out the photo gallery below for some incredible pics of all angles of the festival !

Bands Helping Bands

August 13, 2014 By Nikki Nett

3diIt starts with a Holiday…at home

For the last few years Kettering resident Bryan Suddith has enjoyed watching Dakota Center’s Drill, Drum and Dance Innovators (3DI) Drill Team march in the Holiday At Home Parade. The parade is an annual Labor Day weekend event in Kettering and features the award winning Fairmont Marching Band as well as Alter and Centerville High School Marching Bands.

Bryan noticed that the equipment the boys and young men of the award winning 3DI didn’t match the quality of the drums carried by the high school bands. Each year Bryan and his wife Melissa brainstormed ways to help the tiny drum corp from Dayton’s West side.

Birds of a featherbirdsfor3di

The Suddith’s son, Caleb, marches with the Fairmont band and that is where this fundraiser was born. Fairmont High Schools theme this is “Birds of a Feather” and the pink flamingo began appearing around Fairmont shortly before band camp this summer. The concept of this fundraiser is that bands help bands. Birds of a feather flock together. Bryan worked with Brian Petro to create a mashup design which converted the Firebird logo with a pink flamingo. Bryan Suddith calls it the Fire-Amingo on the Teespring website where the shirts are for sale.

The goal is modest, 88 shirts sold in 8 days, to raise $1000.00 for the Dakota Center 3DI, Drum, Drill and Dance, Corp.

Buy your limited edition shirt to support the 3DI Corp at teespring.com/birdsfor3di.

August 12, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro

10531226_417503531722214_38494395080217858_oEudora Brewing Company, located at 4716 Wilmington Pike in Kettering, has just announced they will be debuting their newest beer, Le Cheval Magique on Wed, August 14th.  It’s a Belgian Golden Strong Ale made with Belgian yeast, Belgian malt, and Belgian hops. The yeast gives it a fruity/spiced character.

At 8.9% alcohol by volume, it’s the strongest beer they’ve brewed to date. If you’re wondering what the name means, it’s named after a mystical horse that is said to live in a wooded area of Belgium. “Cheval Magique” is French for “magic horse”. Just in case you didn’t know, French is one of the official languages of Belgium. Anyway, it will be on tap at Eudora starting tomorrow, and they will be rotating it with the Mother Fuggle from this day forward. Come in and try it, it’s MAGICALLY delicious!

Eudora is also the only Dayton area brewery that allows you to be  the brewmaster.  A variety of recipes are available for you  to brew.   Whether you’ve brewed before or you have no idea what you’re doing, they pro’s at Eudora are there to guide you through every step of the process and make it as easy and as fun as possible.

After scheduling an appointment, you’ll be asked to choose a recipe. After deciding on what recipe you want to brew, you’ll start heating up your strike water and fetch your ingredients with the help from a staff member. The staff member will then help you through the brewing process (or simply supervise to make sure you’re doing okay) from start to finish.966426_315415655264336_1995185709_o  After the actual brewing process is complete, you leave the beer with them to ferment in their fermentation room for 2-4 weeks. They monitor the fermentation and carbonate the beer once it’s done fermenting.

You’ll then return to Eudora on your previously-scheduled bottling day to package the beer. After bottling and applying labels, the beer is yours to take home and enjoy.

A 5-gallon batch makes about 40-45 12oz. bottles of beer and runs about $70 for a standard series beer like a Blonde Ale, Hefeweizen, English Brown Ale, Irish Red Ale or Belgian Pale Ale.  Premium beers like the Robust Porter, Milk Stout or Belgian Dubbel will run you $85 for a 5 gallon batch and you can even step up to a Strong Scottish Ale, Imperial IPA or Russian Imperial Stout for about $100 a batch. Add bottles and custom labels for another $30. For more info on the Brew Your Own option, please contact Eudora at (937) 723-6863.

Get Up Close With Bats

August 12, 2014 By Dayton937

big_brown_bat bodyStep into the exciting and mysterious world of bats with the Organization for Bat Conservation (OBC) at Possum Creek MetroPark Farm Saturday, Aug. 16, from 7:30 to 9pm  during the Live Bat Experience.  The event includes an exploration of the importance of bats, habitat and conservation, as well as of the amazing adaptations bats have made to navigate their nocturnal lifestyle. Attendees will get a chance to meet African fruit bats, a local insect-eating bat and a Jamaican leaf-nosed bat.

In addition, attendees will investigate the many amazing features of bats — including echolocation, flight and feeding habits — and explore the unique roles these nocturnal mammals play in our world. Staff from the OBC also will discuss how to help these local mosquito eaters. Afterward, attendees will take a short hike in search of bats in the wild.

“We are excited to sponsor OBC’s rescued bats and bring these misunderstood creatures to Five Rivers MetroParks,” said David Kugler, president of Propestmen of Ohio Inc. “Many nature centers are struggling with the effects of the economy, and we feel that the OBC’s programs bring a necessary component to the community because they inspire children to learn about science. We hope to get a lot of attendance from the public to help support MetroParks.”

Reservations are required and limited for this free program: Visit metroparks.org to register or call 937-275-7275.

Dead Man Walking to Make Its Second Midwest Opera Appearance

August 11, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro

deadmanwalkingOn Wednesday, August 6, CNN reporter Moni Basu posted the online article “Dead Man Walking” nun: ‘Botched’ executions unmask a botched system.” The article refers to the experiences of Sister Helen Prejean, a Congregation of St. Joseph nun, who first wrote a groundbreaking, bestselling novel that went on to become the basis for the motion picture Dead Man Walking (1995) starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn.

Both the novel and the film tell of a Catholic nun’s stormy spiritual journey, a murderer on death row, the victims of his unthinkable actions, and society at large. In fact, the debate surrounding the works’ main theme is in the news in Ohio and elsewhere in the nation and speaks to our collective view on justice, compassion, the American legal system, and our role as citizens. Ministering to inmates on death row led to Sister Helen Prejean becoming a staunch advocate of abolishing the death penalty and developing a second, unwavering belief: America’s death penalty process doesn’t work.operadead

Composer Jake Heggie premiered the opera Dead Man Walking, his first opera, with a libretto by Terrence McNally; it premiered on October 7, 2000 at the War Memorial Opera House, San Francisco Opera. In 2001, Cincinnati Opera commissioned a second production of Dead Man Walking. On Friday, February 27 and Sunday March 1, 2015, Dayton Opera will present Dead Man Walking, making Dead Man Walking only the second presentation of the opera in the Midwest.

Dead Man Walking taps into one of the core issues of our day and the whirlwind of emotions that surround it. Whether you’ve thought about the death penalty or not, this opera is sure to open a path to your heart, soul, and mind. After all, isn’t that is what great art is all about?

“I can’t say how happy I am to be back in the very building I began my radio career on the legendary WING-FM,” Dan stated. “After a satisfying 12 year career in TV as an anchor and reporter at Channel 2, I’m excited to transition back into radio. What’s even more profound is the fact that John King, the current general manger for Fly 92.9, is the same man who gave me my first big break in the business back in 1982!”

King commented, “When Alpha Media entered the Dayton market with the goal of creating truly ‘Live and Local’ radio, I was challenged to find a personality that would not only sound great on air, but one that has deep roots in the community; we couldn’t be happier to find exactly that in Dan.”

Alpha Media Executive VP of Programming, Scott Mahalick added, “Dan brings a charismatic and professional vibe to the airwaves. He is a top notch talent that will help Fly achieve the next level of success!”
The Fly 92.9 Morning Flight will be a music intensive show delivering everything Dayton needs to wake up and get to work. Featuring artists like Maroon 5, John Mellencamp, U2, and Kelly Clarkson, WGTZ boasts the largest music library in the Dayton radio market. Fly 92.9 streams live at FLY929.com and via apps available in the Apple and Android markets.

The Greatest Potato Salad in the World *** Win 2 lbs & Cabbage Rolls ***

August 8, 2014 By Dayton937 28 Comments

John Mott with his great potato salad

Third Generation Owner John Mott with his Famous Belmont Catering Potato Salad

Are you aware that the greatest potato salad in the world is in Dayton, Ohio? The Big Ragu knows…

YES, it is true!  But many Daytonians already knew that Belmont Catering is the potato salad mecca of the Midwest.  If you are like us, their potato salad has been a special treat at your family functions and holidays for decades.

We will have many foaming at the mouth for this giveaway:

****Comment on the story below and one winner will be chosen at random.  The prize is 2 pounds of Belmont Catering’s famous potato salad and 6 of their cabbage rolls !!

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Belmont Catering has been providing the best potato salad you have ever eaten for over 35 years.  It is a Food Adventure in a container….

— Family owned for 3 generations, today’s owner John Mott still sticks to the basics that made the company a success.

— Located on 730 Watervliet Rd. near the intersection of Smithville, you may sometimes see a line out the door.

— The potato salad is such a cult classic that former Dayton residents have it shipped overnight all over the USA.  One person even overnighted a huge cooler of the stuff to Manhattan in New York City and paid $100 in shipping!  Who does that, unless it is the best potato salad in the world.

Freshly peeled by hand

On busy weekends, Belmont Catering Hand Peels 2,000lbs of Potatoes. Yep, a TON of Potatoes

— Belmont Catering goes through about 500 pounds of potatoes a week, and on holiday weekends they go through 1,500 – 2,000 pounds of potatoes.  Yes, that is a ton of potatoes.   The staff told us that 50 pounds of potatoes makes about 65 pounds of Potato Salad.

— Our biggest tip is CALL AHEAD.  It is best to call in your order 1 or 2 days ahead of time.  If you just stop in, it will be rare for you to find what you need because everything is usually sold out since items are made to order.  You can thank the Food Adventures Crew later for this advice.

MUST EATS:

— THE POTATO SALAD:  OBVIOUSLY .. at $4.25 a pound, there are lines out the door for this stuff.  but why is it so good?  Is it the pimentos?  The Mustard? The Mayonnaise? NOOOO !

Here is the secret to the world’s best potato salad:

1) The potatoes are peeled, rinsed, then SHREDDED like hash browns.  This gives a distinct, one-of-a-kind texture and no hard chunks.

2) No chunks of eggs in the salad.  This is potato salad, not egg salad.  Eggs may or may be in the recipe, but you won’t see any ….

3)  Cleanliness.  The kitchen is immaculate.  The Montgomery County Health Inspectors have given Belmont Catering the highest marks over their last 19 visits to the kitchen.

4) Third Generation Owner, John Mott is still using his Grandmother’s recipe.  And by the way, her recipe will blow your mom’s potato salad out of the water.  It is reminiscent of the movie “What’s Up tiger Lily” where they hunted down a similar recipe, “a salad so delicious you could pltoz.”

Storefront on Watervliet

Storefront on 730 Watervliet Ave., Inside is the World’s Greatest Potato Salad

Oh but that’s not all.   Belmont Catering did not build its business on potato salad alone.

There are more, MUST EATS such as:

— CABBAGE ROLLS:  $6.80 for 6 of them, they are also a cult favorite.

— THE BBQ PULLED PORK: Outstanding flavor, and sold at $6.90 a pound

There are many more items, but these are our top favorites.   You can find a list of pick up items HERE, we cannot stress enough the need to call ahead..

And then there is the CATERING aspect of their business.  If you need an event catered, breakfasts, cookouts, or boxed lunches, these are your go to guys.  They pretty much deliver a Food Adventure to your event.   Belmont Catering has built this business for decades with great food and service.

With Labor Day Weekend right around the corner, now is a perfect time to treat yourself to some of the World’s Best Potato Salad !!

Cabbage Rolls - frozen to go, or made fresh to order
