Beloved DARK HORSE Opens Friday at THE NEON! WEINER and MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY Continue!

July 6, 2016 By Jonathan McNeal

dark-horse-poster-lgHello Everyone,

We had a great holiday weekend at THE NEON. Thanks to everyone who came out. Though critics had luke-warm reviews of OUR KIND OF TRAITOR, many of our regulars truly enjoyed the film. In addition, THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY had a couple sell-outs over the weekend – it’s a film that has incredible word-of-mouth business. And then there’s WEINER – a documentary like you’ve never seen before. We will keep all three films for another week, and we’ll add a brand new film into the mix – DARK HORSE. This delightful documentary is currently rated “97% Fresh” on rottentomatoes.

Synopsis for DARK HORSE: “Set in a former mining village in Wales, DARK HORSE is the inspirational true story of a group of friends from a working men’s club who decide to take on the elite ‘sport of kings’ and breed themselves a racehorse. Raised on a slagheap allotment, their foal grows into an unlikely champion, beating the finest thoroughbreds in the land, before suffering a near fatal accident. Nursed back to health by the love of his owners – for whom he’s become a source of inspiration and hope – he makes a remarkable recovery, returning to the track for a heart-stopping comeback.” (Taken from Sony Classics) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official website.

Many thanks for everyone who came out to see CLOSET MONSTER last week. Though it wasn’t a sell-out, audience response was fantastic.  And I’m happy to report that we raised over $650 to send to victims’ families of the Orlando nightclub tragedy.

PUSH Dayton has rented our space to bring a one-time screening of TRAPPED to THE NEON on Thur, Aug. 4 at 7:30. “On June 27, 2016, the Supreme Court ruled in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, that restrictions on abortion clinics in Texas posed an undue burden on women seeking abortions. TRAPPED, a documentary by Dawn Porter, follows the struggles of the clinic workers and lawyers who are on the front lines of a battle to keep abortion safe and legal for millions of American women. US. reproductive health clinics are fighting to remain open. Since 2010, 288 TRAP (Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers) laws have been passed by conservative state legislatures. Unable to comply with these far-reaching and medically unnecessary measures, clinics have taken their fight to the courts. What do these restrictions mean for the women of the United States? Their doctors? What’s the collateral damage when legislation plays politics with women’s health? PUSH (Professionals United for Sexual Health) is a Dayton-based advocacy group that raises funding and awareness for Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio.” Ticket details coming soon. Sponsored by Harmony Creek United Church of Christ, Drunk Think Tank, Blue Jacket Books, and Mark E. Owens, Dayton Clerk of Court.” Tickets are $5 each and are only available by clicking the official link above.

Local filmmaker Gino Pasi and his team are hosting a special screening of his new film on Thursday, August 11. “THE ARCHIVIST, a short-film written, produced, and directed by Pasi, tells the story of the brief and unusual relationship of Virginia Hirsch and Archie Vecchio, two people unable to forsake the past. The halcyon days of Virginia Hirsch’s youth are quickly fading no matter how hard she tries to hold on to them. For Archie Vechhio, history is much easier to navigate than the complicated present. When these two people meet, however, the past is buried and the present engaged. And both Virginia and Archie come to realize that living life to the fullest in the “here and now” means taking action – action that won’t come easy for either. Tickets available now at THE NEON’s box office or at the door the night of the showing for $5. One Time Only Public Showing! 9PM, Thursday, August 11, 2016.” (This film will screen earlier in the evening for invited guests.)

If you’re a FaceBook user and a fan of ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, be sure to visit our FaceBook page…There’s a contest you’ll likely want to enter. (More AbFab contests to come!)

Next week, I will roll out our campaign to assist with installing brand new chairs at THE NEON. A handful of people have already mentioned that they’d like to help – and that makes me quite hopeful. If you’d like to become a “NEON Lumbar Supporter,” you’ll find out all about it in next week’s newsletter.

We hope to see you soon!
Jonathan

Warning Signs You’re Talking To A Fitness Charlatan

July 6, 2016 By Jason Harrison

I share a trait with a lot of small business owners I’ve met, which is a constant low-level anxiety that tomorrow I’ll wake up and no one will want my services. My specific thinking goes something like this: there’s such an abundance of free and high-quality information out there that surely no one will pay me to help them with their fitness journey.

The thing that serves to ameliorate that anxiety the quickest is the collection of questions people ask me when they find out what I do. These questions let me know that people are still confused about the basics when it comes to fitness (like what to eat, what not to eat, and how to move), in part because the industry itself is guilty of peddling so much misinformation in the name of profits.

photo-1432888622747-4eb9a8efeb07

I’ve put together a short list of things to keep in mind when you’re trying to navigate the fitness journey for the first time. This isn’t about telling you what to do so much as it is about telling you where to find what to do (and not do).

1.) Know the difference between businessmen first, coaches second and coaches first, businessmen second. If your personal Facebook feed is anything like mine, you’ve got friends who are involved in one multi-level marketing scheme or another selling you fitness products like smoothies, wraps, and meal replacements. Multi-level marketing is a process whereby people earn money not just from the products they sell to you, but also from a percentage of the money the people whom they recruit into the industry make from selling products. So there’s an incentive not just to sell you stuff, but to recruit other people to sell you stuff. One way to know that you’re dealing with a businesswoman first and a coach second is whether or not part of their financial incentive is to recruit other people into their business.

2.) If someone tries to convince you that you can’t get fit without them, then move on. With time, focus, and dedication, you could learn all that you would need to know to get fit without the help of a coach. You don’t need me. Many people have limited time, limited focus, and developing dedication. These are the people who might “need” me–and even then for a limited time. Other people who need a coach are those with more advanced physical or athletic aspirations. If you have general fitness goals, however, you can learn what you would need to learn to get started from the wealth of free information available to you on the web.

This message is a lot different than the hard sell you might get when you sign up for a new gym membership. The way I was taught to sell training when I first started in the industry was to gather data (body fat, circumference measurements, weight, etc.) and then proceed to make people feel terrible about that data before convincing them that the only way to change was to work with me.

If a coach truly wants to help you get fit, they’re going to do their very best to make you feel good every step of the way. That has nothing to do with the coach being a nice person (although they might be), but everything to do with your longterm success. What we know about the science of change is that if you feel good about the process then you’re much more likely to stick with it, and thus more likely to achieve your goals. A trainer who body shames you and tells you that you need them doesn’t have your longterm interests in mind.

photo-1466761366829-84fd59a22e0b

3.) If someone tries to convince you that the journey is about having fun, then move on. Think about all of the things in your life that are worth the most to you. Your children. Your relationships. Perhaps your career. Academic achievements. Volunteer work.

How many of these things would you associate exclusively with fun?

I’m here to tell you that your fitness journey won’t always be fun. The results will be fun. Your new body will be fun. But the journey itself? Not always fun. Learning how to cook can be frustrating. Struggling through a difficult set or exercise can be humbling. Missing a playoff game on television because it starts at 9 PM on a weeknight and you have decided to prioritize sleep can feel like so much adulting.

Fitness is rewarding, but it’s not always fun.

4.) If someone tries to convince you that the journey is brutally difficult all the time, then move on. No pain, no gain is basically a lie. Exercise shouldn’t be painful in the way that an injury is painful. Training should be uncomfortable, but painful usually is a recipe for injury. If I’m pulling deadlifts from the floor for 50 repetitions across 5 sets, that’s uncomfortable but it’s not painful. If I’m sprinting up a hill as hard as I can, I’m definitely uncomfortable, but I’m not in pain.

The fittest people I know are constantly putting themselves in uncomfortable positions such that what is uncomfortable today will no longer be uncomfortable next month. But pain? Nah. They’re not in pain. Sometimes they’ll get sore, but they’ll eat well and sleep well to recover. If your workout regimen leaves you in pain all of the time, you might just be pushing yourself too hard–or are under the guidance of a coach whose ego is driving her programming rather than your needs.

Thursday Night Throwdown-Dayton launches Monthly Barista Competition

July 6, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

latteIf you’re a barista then the Third Thursday of every month is now your day to throwdown and show what you’ve got! Dayton now has it’s own regional barista competition, starting on Thursday, July 21 at Ghostlight Coffee and taking place at a different location on the third Thursday of each following month.

“We have so many talented baristas around the Miami Valley,” Henry Dean, Boston Stoker Coffee Company President said. “Thursday Night Throwdown is a great way for us to show off all of our local talent and also push each other with a little friendly monthly competition.”

The first Thursday Night Throwdown will focus on latte art. For only $2 baristas can enter in and showcase the best of that their steady hands and unbridled imaginations can create.

“Latte art has become very popular so I’m excited to see what Dayton’s baristas can do,” Shane Anderson, Ghostlight Coffee Owner said. “The winner gets all of the collected entry fees but really this is more about getting together and growing a community.”

After July, Thursday Night Throwdown will take place at changing coffeehouses each month to limit any perceived, “home field advantage.”

“I’m excited to host the first one,” Anderson said. “We want to be seen as a relaxed, neighborhood coffeehouse, but there’s also a very artistic side to what we’re doing. I think this is a great chance to revel in that a little more.”

For those interested, Thursday Night Throwdown takes place on the third Thursday of every month. Locations and times vary. The kickoff event takes place on July 21 at Ghostlight Coffee from 6-9pm and is a latte art competition. Entry is $2 and winner takes all.

Sew Dayton Closing After 4 Years; Owners Opening Two New Studios

July 5, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

Local small business, Sew Dayton announced today that they would be closing their doors on August 16th, 2016.  After almost 4 years in business, owners Jesy Anderson and Tracy McElfresh have decided to open sewing studios of their own.  Focusing more on the education side and having very limited retail.

“We have been so successful as a sewing shop in Dayton, that we decided we should offer more classes! With the retail it is hard to focus on the learning and figured if we both opened a sewing studio, we could teach twice as many people and can offer more focused classes.” Says Anderson and McElfresh, “We have fallen in love with teaching and really wanted to focus on that aspect.”

About Sew Dayton

Sew Dayton opened in 2012; as part of the Activated Spaces program supported by the Downtown Dayton Partnership and UpDayton.

Originally opening at 16 E. Brown Street in the fall of 2012, in October 2013 they moved to a bigger location at 261 Wayne Ave to accommodate the growing need for classes, unique fabrics and high quality notions.

The classes have been the most popular offering from Sew Dayton, which sparked the owners to consider closing the one shop to open two sewing studios.

“It really was a hard decision to make.  We love downtown and the Oregon District. We love the community and we will miss everyone. It’s a decision that we made so that we can offer even more options the community.  We will both still offer light alterations, classes, fun events at our new studio’s and we will both expand into producing custom sewing projects for customers.”

For closing timeline and information please visit www.sewdayton.com.

Both ladies hope to have their new studios open by September 1, 2016.

Tracy is still looking for the perfect space to locate Tracy’s Sewing Studio, LLC.  Jesse will be opening Needle, Ink and Thread   at the corner of Dayton- Xenia Road  & Grange Hall is  Beavercreek, which is in the same plaza as Decoy Art Studio.

“We would like to thank everyone who has supported Sew Dayton for the last 4 years. We have learned a lot from running a business together and are now excited to take a new direction with our own shops.  It’s exciting and a positive addition for the community. We really hope to see familiar faces at the new shops!”

Ohio Film Rebate Increased to $40 Million

July 2, 2016 By Film Dayton

9778231-largeOhio Governor John Kasich has signed into law the revised Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit, passed by the Ohio General Assembly, which raises the annual movie production incentive, doubling the cap to $40 million and changes the incentive rate to 30% on all production dollars spent in Ohio.

This new incentive elevates Ohio to the competitive level of states like Georgia and Louisiana, which currently lead the country in film production. Since passing the film incentive in 2009, over $100 million has been rebated to production companies, shooting movies in Ohio. Of that money 90% has gone to Cleveland and Cincinnati projects.

In April of this year, FilmDayton reorganized itself into a Film Commission, to get a seat at the table to bring some of those jobs to the Miami Valley. “We have the locations, amenities and crew base to bring film work to town. We are currently working to rally the support of the city and surrounding counties to help the Greater Dayton area benefit from the economic development the Motion Picture Tax Rebate can deliver” says FilmDayton Executive Director Lisa Grigsby.

According to an economic impact study conducted by the Economics Center at the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati has generated more than $54 million for the Greater Cincinnati economy as well as created more than 8,800 jobs through motion picture and television productions over the last two years.

Joel

Joel, in character for a recent production.

Yellow Springs filmmaker Joel Levinson, currently raising funds for a feature he hopes to shoot in the area, reacts to the increase in the tax rebate. “It’s going to create a sustainable model for long-term film growth in the area.”

Since July 2011, the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit has accounted for the creation of the equivalent of 1,729 full-time jobs, and over $400 million of total economic impact in the Cleveland area.

“The city of Columbus just earmarked $90,000 to jumpstart FilmColumbus, and so far Dayton has been working with private donations to run our commission,” shares Grigsby. According to FilmDayton President Shaunn Baker, “Dayton is just prime for a small $5-$10 million production. Booking hotel nights, catering, and locations would bring direct dollars to our community. Not to mention putting to work our local crew.”

“I really feel like this is our time where Dayton can really bring in those filmmakers from LA and New York to kathleenHartshornproduce something amazing,” Kathleen Hartshorn said.  Hartshorn is a local production manager, she says Dayton offers low prices and hardworking crews.  “Being able to come here, you’re going to be able to take a multi-million-dollar film and produce it at half that cost,” Hartshorn said.

FOX 45 recently did a piece on the what more fil work could mean to the Miami Valley.  Click here to view it.

Last year’s $20 million dollars in rebates were all accounted for by mid-winter, thus the doubling of the budget for fiscal year 2016-17. This year’s $40 Million in rebates will start being awarded July 1st and applications are already cued and awaiting certification. Film Budgets must be a minimum of $300,000 to apply for the program.

FilmDayton LogoFilmDayton -The Greater Dayton Area Film Commission is the only 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to fostering economic development in the Miami Valley by attracting media production and businesses that can make a significant economic impact on the local economy. We promote the art, craft and business of film by developing our local workforce and providing programs designed to provide local talent with the training, experience and professional connections to enable them to succeed in the film industry.

Free Cab Rides Back for Holiday Weekend

July 1, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

4th of july 2016 flyerMontgomery County Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. is pleased to announce that with support from Heidelberg Distributing Company and AAA Miami Valley, the ArriveSafe program will be providing free cab rides home for
Montgomery County residents this July 4th holiday weekend.
Since Prosecutor Heck began ArriveSafe in 2007, nearly 5,200 free cabs rides have been provided to Montgomery County residents. Removing just one impaired driver from the streets may save a life – maybe even your own.

Last year in Ohio, there were 1,110 lives lost in traffic crashes. About 30% of those deaths were in alcohol-related traffic crashes. Montgomery County had 23 alcohol-related traffic crash deaths. All of those injuries and deaths were completely preventable – if the driver had simply made the smart decision to not drive while impaired.

ArriveSafe will be offering free cab rides home for Montgomery County residents from 6
p.m. Friday, July 1, 2016 through 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2016.
Prosecutor Heck added, “Enjoy this July 4th holiday weekend, but celebrate responsibly.
Arrange for safe transportation with a designated, sober driver or call ArriveSafe at 449-
9999 and request a free cab ride home. We will pay the fare up to $50.”
