Downtown Dayton Retail Lab Accepting Applications

January 20, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

After a successful first-round of the Retail Lab small business accelerator program, The Downtown Dayton Partnership (DDP), along with its small business development partners, is inviting business owners to apply to the second session of the program. The Retail Lab is an intensive 12-week experience for business owners aiming to launch or grow their first-floor business in downtown Dayton, and applications will be accepted through February 3.

The Retail Lab has two main goals: To continue energizing downtown with vibrant storefronts, and provide a supportive pathway into the downtown market for emerging first-floor entrepreneurs, especially women-owned and minority-owned businesses.

“As we emerge from the pandemic and the impacts of the economic shutdown, there is an opportunity to take new business ideas and budding entrepreneurs and show them the support network available in our community to grow or launch their own commercial ventures,” said Sandra K. Gudorf, president of the DDP.

The Downtown Dayton Retail Lab will provide a series of workshops, pitch events, and pilot opportunities that connect the participating businesses to the people, ideas, capital, and resources that will help them thrive and grow in downtown Dayton. Weekly workshops will be held virtually and include facilitated instruction, work sessions with mentors, and occasional in-person activities with appropriate health precautions.

Eligible businesses include boutiques, shops, cafes, studios, and restaurants – any consumer business that adds to the vibrancy of downtown’s sidewalks. Applicants should either be located in downtown Dayton or aiming to launch downtown in the next 6 to 12 months. Interested small business owners can find more information, including the program application, at DowntownDayton.org/retail-lab. Applications for the Downtown Dayton Retail Lab will be accepted through February 3, with the program slated to begin later in February.

The Retail Lab leverages support from many business resource partners including The Entrepreneurs Center, the Miami Valley Small Business Development Center, Five Rivers MetroParks – 2nd Street Market, Launch Dayton, and The Hub at the Dayton Arcade.

“In 2020, the first cohort of 11 Retail Lab participants experienced how a community of entrepreneurs and resources can take an initial business plan to the next level of success, and we look forward to providing that same opportunity to a new group of Dayton entrepreneurs,” said AJ Ferguson, project manager with the DDP and coordinator of the Retail Lab program.

“The Retail Lab experience has given our business the necessary tools to make sure we are set up to succeed, and the opportunity to work with other businesses and collaborate on ways we can support each other,” said Vanessa Llyod, a previous Retail Lab participant and owner of A+ Cleaners in downtown Dayton.

Participation in the 12 week program is provided at no cost, and in addition to the support businesses receive through the workshops, each participant is eligible for up to $2,500 in professional services from creative, legal, and financial firms to advance their business.

Questions about the Retail Lab should be directed to AJ Ferguson, [email protected], or call (937) 681-9793.

DPAA presents Beethoven 8 and Florence Price

January 19, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra is thrilled to be back on stage in the Schuster Center with a live audience for their first Masterworks Concert of the New Year!

The concert opens with Florence Price’s Violin Concerto No. 2. Price once wrote in a letter to conductor Serge Koussevitzky, “To begin with I have two handicaps – those of sex and race. I am a woman; and I have some Negro blood in my veins,” adding “I would like to be judged on merit alone.” (www.npr.com) Merit, indeed, as her talent sparkles in this beautiful work.

Concertmaster Jessica Hung takes center stage to perform Price’s composition. Then, continuing our two-year celebration of the 250th Anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, the DPO performs his Symphony No. 8, a short, spirited work composed between two much more famous symphonies, yet a definite force in its own right that celebrates the composer’s playful side.

Dayton Pizza Factory To Compete in ORA Fundraiser

January 19, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

The Ohio Restaurant Association Education Foundation announces the launching of statewide fundraising campaign to benefit Ohio Restaurant Employee Relief Fund

From Monday, January 25 to Sunday, January 31, the Ohio Restaurant Association Education Foundation (ORAEF) is collaborating with pizza operators and restauranteurs with generous hearts on a statewide fundraiser, called Pizza with a Purpose, to benefit the Ohio Restaurant Employee Relief Fund.

Participating pizza operators across the Buckeye state will donate $1.00 per pepperoni pizza sold to the Fund, which provides grants to restaurant, foodservice and hospitality employees financially impacted by the pandemic.

The number of pizzas sold will be tracked, the individual location that sells the most pizzas will be recognized as “Best Pepperoni Pizza” in Ohio and awarded the coveted “Golden Pizza” slice trophy.

Currently, more than 250 operators and restauranteurs with over 100 locations total have signed up to participate, including the following:

Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory

Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern

Wheat Penny Oven & Bar

Click here to view all participants.

“We’re incredibly honored and excited to be a part of this effort to raise awareness and funds for restaurant employees that are hurting during this difficult time. Getting pizza operators across the state to come together for a great cause is something that is the heart of every business owner that cares about their community and its people,” said Ryan Rose, president & CEO of Romeo’s Pizza Franchise, one of many participating operators. Rose is a member of the ORA & Education Foundation board of directors.

“We are so thankful for all of the pizza operators participating to help raise funds for those in need,” said John Barker, ORA president & CEO. “The need is severe. During the pandemic, we’ve conducted polls about the health of restaurants across the state to assess the devastating impacts of COVID-19 on the industry. Recent poll numbers reveal that at current capacity, 74% of Ohio restaurant operators believe they will be forced to close within one year and 82% of respondents did not break even in 2020. Additionally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics just released numbers that the restaurant industry lost 372,000 jobs nationwide in the month of December alone and is down 2.4 million jobs since March 2020.”

Even with the vaccine distribution in the early stages, Ohio’s 585,000 restaurant and foodservice employees are still struggling to find work due to many furloughs and are in financial distress.

“Since its launch in April 2020, the Relief Fund has awarded more than 1,300 grants to use for housing, living and medical expenses, and fundraised over $400,000 for employees in need,” said Patty Halper, Executive Director of the ORA Education Foundation. “Pizza with a Purpose is one of the many ways the ORAEF and generous operators are supporting them and we look forward to the promotion later this month.”

Pizza enthusiasts can learn more here and contribute to the cause through participating in Pizza with a Purpose or by donating directly to the fund at OhioRestaurantsRelief.org.

MetroParks Expands Heart Healthy Trails Initiative

January 17, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Five Rivers MetroParks has expanded its Heart Healthy Trails initiative by designating two new trails — one at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark and one at Englewood MetroPark — as part of the initiative.

MetroParks’ new Heart Healthy Trails are:

  • Wegeryn Gardens MetroPark’s Marie Aull Trail (1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave): This natural surface trail is an easy hike on flat ground. This trail is a one-mile loop and allows walkers to discover a variety of native trees and many opportunities to spot wildlife.
  • Englewood MetroPark red trail loop (4361 W. National Rd.): This 1-mile trail loop is a natural surface trail that’s easy to traverse. This trail takes you along the lake and through beautiful wooded areas. Make your hike a little longer and visit such points of interest as Oaks and Patty falls.

The Heart Healthy Trails initiative is designed to help people improve their physical and mental health outdoors. It was launched in fall 2020, when three existing trails were designated as Heart Healthy Trails.

According to the American Heart Association, just 30 to 40 minutes of exercise a few times a week will improve heart health. Additionally, exercising outdoors provides benefits traditional gym workouts do not, including a reduction of depression and stress, an increase in vitamin D, and more.

Heart Healthy Trails make it easier for people to exercise outdoors because they’re:

  • Easy to moderate
  • 1 to 2.5 miles long
  • Walkable at a brisk pace
  • Marked every quarter mile to help users track their pace

“These are easy, entry-level trails on paved or flat surfaces without a lot of elevation change,” said Angie Sheldon, MetroParks outdoor recreation coordinator. “Signage on the trails also helps people start walking outdoors as part of a heart-healthy lifestyle. Each trail is a little different, depending on the location and length, so people can try them all or pick a favorite.”

The American Heart Association recommends walking at a brisk pace, working toward walking at least 2.5 miles per hour or 24 minutes per mile.

MetroParks’ other Heart Healthy Trails are:

  • Wolf Creek Trail (start at Olde Town Depot, intersection of Wolf Creek Pike/Main Street and Broadway, Trotwood): This paved recreation trail is marked every quarter mile, so users know when to turn around to get the distance they desire. The trail is marked for a 2-mile walk (1 mile out and 1 mile walking back). Those who wish to continue along the trail can visit Sycamore State Park.
  • Island MetroPark (101 E. Helena St., Dayton): This trail is a paved 0.65-mile loop around the perimeter of the park. Trail users will enjoy landscaped beds, views of the Stillwater River and “Ashzilla,” one of the biggest trees in MetroParks. Located near the parking lot, “Ashzilla” is a large white ash tree. Walk the loop two or three times to get the recommended 30 minutes of exercise.
  • Germantown MetroPark (6206 Boomershine Rd., Germantown): Users will trek/walk new natural surface trails at the park. The Heart Healthy Trail includes portions of the purple, brown and orange trail loops, totaling 1.7 miles. Trail users can connect to Germantown MetroPark’s extensive trail system via the orange trial.

The Heart Healthy Trails are featured in MetroParks’ mobile app, powered by OuterSpatial, allowing trailgoers to easily navigate the trails, locate amenities and more. Download the app at www.metroparks.org/mobile.

Learn more about MetroParks’ Heart Healthy Trails by visiting www.metroparks.org/heart-healthy.

Asian Chinese Foodie Visits Fu Mon Lau

January 16, 2021 By Jon Hung

Finally, Cantonese-style dim sum dishes have arrived in Dayton.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the news, Chinese restaurants across the area took a hit. Diners went down, as did business. And when the Ohio government took steps to slow down transmission, many of them went to “take-out” and “delivery” only.  As a full-on Chinese foodie, this hurts. You don’t need to be a forty-something Asian man to know that fresh Chinese food is better than what may arrive 30 minutes later to your door. So when I learned that a new restaurant had opened up at 2008 Miamisburg-Centerville Road, I had to check it out.

No frackin’ regrets.
Fu Mon Lau opened up at the South Town Center east of the Dayton Mall, where the Qdoba used to be (east of the El Toto). Someone clearly put a lot of love and attention into the decor: it reminds me of some Chinese restaurants from the Toronto area, right down to the lobsters and fish staring at you while you eat. Modern and clean, the place offers not just the expected American Chinese fare but also pleasant surprises which I have never had in this area.

I came for lunch and left as if I had dinner. For an appetizer, I ordered their potsticker dumplings and chose the beef ho fun for my main course. My compatriot had the wonton soup and the beef and broccoli lunch special.
Let’s start with the potstickers. In my experience, potstickers-from-the-package come with a thick outer shell, and are often deep-fried before serving. These were clearly fried-then-steamed, which is the proper way to cook them. And if they were frozen, they would have come out kind of chewy. These? Were definitely fresh.

The wonton soup. We’re talking some honking dumplings here. Again, you know it’s fresh from how the shells look: a little wilted, soft, and therefore likely not frozen prior. I didn’t get to have any, but they looked good and the scallions in the broth were green and fresh.

The “beef ho fun” is another story. Growing up Cantonese, this dish was known to me as “gong chow naw ho.” Tender beef; soft thick rice noodles; scallions; onions; and bean sprouts. Simple, delicious. And having lived in this area for almost twenty years I can say confidently that no one makes these noodles around here. If you want an authentic, real Cantonese dish? This is it.
The beef and broccoli? Looked amazing. The broccoli was green and crisp. The beef was not over-sauced. My compatriot enjoyed it and, frankly, I probably would have stolen some of it if she weren’t looking.
The food was awesome, but I’m missing something else important: the tea. Served hot and in pots, as one would accompany any dim sum sitting, they had jasmine, green, and oolong tea available. I probably could have even asked for chrysanthemum. All I know is that those teapots and cups were something out of my childhood.

I can’t recommend this place enough. The lovely woman that served us explained that they would have had dim sum on weekends, but for COVID protocols. Until then, though, please enjoy Fu Mon Lau.

Campaign to ‘Make Screen Time Reading Time’ Launches Today

January 15, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Click! CaptionsON is a new national reading campaign that educates families and schools to leave closed captioning (subtitles) ON during screen time to boost reading skills. Kids see the action, hear the words, see the words appear in the text at the bottom of the screen, and read along to improve literacy skills while still having fun and enjoying screen time.

The Campaign launches by mailing over 3,500 Click! CaptionsON Reading Kits to educate families on the benefits of closed captioning. To follow is a coordinated social media campaign featuring video testimonials from “I am Caption.Cool” Literacy Champions – staunch advocates of literacy and lovers of reading who support the Click! CaptionsON campaign; improving reading skills when reading scores are at an all-time low and screen time is increasing exponentially. Click here to view C.C Literacy Champion’s video: Cassie Barlow: President of the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education.

Captions are free and easy to use when not reading books – making joining the Caption.Cool campaign a win- win for kids, parents, and teachers. Virtually all shows are captioned, including YouTube, Netflix, Disney, and games like Fortnite. “The sad reality is that 65% of American children are not proficient in reading, and with COVID-19 restrictions, kids are ‘glued’ to screens 5,6,7 hours a day. Screen time is increasing, and reading skills are shrinking!” said Leib Lurie, Caption.Cool Founder and CEO of #KidsReadNow, which has mailed over one million books. “Students need to read at least one hour a day to improve their literacy skills, which are essential to succeed in all aspects of life.” adds Barbara Lurie, former Reading Teacher and #KidsReadNow and Caption.Cool Co-Founder.

Click! CaptionsON is very visible in the community due to Huntington Billboards’ generous donation of 15 billboards to increase community awareness and campaign visibility. Generous funding from ‘By The Hand Foundation’ and the Miami Valley Foundation has laid the foundation for a pioneering year in literacy!

2nd Annual Winans/Moeller Brew Barn Collaboration Released

January 15, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Winans Wurtle Nut Brown Ale by Moeller Brew Barn just released their second annual edition. The dessert ale makes its return to both Moeller Brew Barn locations in Maria Stein and Troy, as well as retailers across 35 counties in Ohio. The local brewmaster and confectioner’s creation is made with the famous Winans Wurtles

“Winans is excited to welcome the next round of Moeller Brew Barn’s Winans brew. The first creation was really popular and represented the quality of Winans products well. We are excited to taste it soon,” stated Laurie Winans Reiser, owner of Winans Chocolates + Coffees, headquartered in Piqua, Ohio.

At 6.3% ABV, Winans Wurtle Nut Brown Ale is full of caramel, chocolate and pecan notes and aromas. Its medium body and nutty finish make it the perfect treat as Valentine’s Day approaches.

To accommodate the day of love, the ale’s can has undergone a design refresh. The new label displays a sleek black background with a confetti of hearts and shiny, metallic red detail. Additionally, the can can be personalized with a hand-written note to loved ones. The letter has even been started for you: “You mean the Wurtle to me, and then some.”

“In 2018, we brewed the Winans Meltaway Milk Chocolate Porter, and we learned then what hand-crafting chocolates was all about. We’ve built upon our collaboration brew, and the new personalized-option can design takes it one step further,” said Nick Moeller, Moeller Brew Barn founder. “I know what I’ll be getting my wife for Valentine’s Day, and hopefully she knows what to get for me.”

Moeller Brew Barn opened its doors in Maria Stein in 2015 with a second location in Troy in 2019, while Winans has been serving Ohio for four generations. This January marks the second year that both Ohio-built companies have joined forces to create the rich and nutty, Winans Wurtle Nut Brown Ale.

January 13, 2021 By Jonathan McNeal

We have two new films opening this week and a surprise for next Thursday. MLK/FBI is the powerful, award-winning documentary that premiered with The Toronto International Film Festival this year, and THE DIG is a lovely period film with NEON-favorites Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes – they both open this week. If you need to see HERSELF, Thursday will be your last chance. Due to the love and support for ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI and PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN, we found a way to hold both for one show per day over the weekend. On Thursday, Jan. 21, we will have a preview screening of OUR FRIEND – starring Jason Segel, Dakota Johnson, and Casey Affleck (which will officially open on Jan. 22).
In our Virtual Cinema, we will open ACASA, MY HOME and ROCK CAMP: THE MOVIE – two very different, well-crafted docs. We truly have something for everyone this weekend!
Be sure to check out our recently updated “Coming Soon” list below. Some titles are still very tentative, but the list is stellar – including highly anticipated, award-season films like NOMADLAND (which just won “Best Picture” at the Gotham Awards on Monday), SUPERNOVA and MINARI.
NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENTS:
Synopsis for MLK/FBI: “MLK/FBI is the first film to uncover the extent of the FBI’s surveillance and harassment of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Based on newly discovered and declassified files, utilizing a trove of documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act and unsealed by the National Archives, as well as revelatory restored footage, the documentary explores the government’s history of targeting Black activists, and the contested meaning behind some of our most cherished ideals. Featuring interviews with key cultural figures, including former FBI Director James Comey, MLK/FBI tells this astonishing and tragic story with searing relevance to our current moment.” Click the image below to watch the trailer.
Synopsis for THE DIG: “As WWII looms, a wealthy widow (CAREY MULLIGAN) hires an amateur archaeologist (RALPH FIENNES) to excavate the burial mounds on her estate. Synopsis for OUR FRIEND: “OUR FRIEND tells the inspiring and extraordinary true story of the Teague family—journalist Matt (Casey Affleck), his vibrant wife Nicole (Dakota Johnson) and their two young daughters—and how their lives are upended by Nicole’s heartbreaking diagnosis of terminal cancer. As Matt’s responsibilities as caretaker and parent become increasingly overwhelming, the couple’s best friend Dane Faucheux (Jason Segel) offers to come and help out. As Dane puts his life on hold to stay with his friends, the impact of this life altering decision proves greater and more profound than anyone could have imagined.” (Gravitas Venture) Click on the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
NEW TO OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for ACASA, MY HOME: Available Starting Jan. 15! “In the wilderness of the Bucharest Delta, an abandoned water reservoir just outside the bustling metropolis, the Enache family lived in perfect harmony with nature for two decades, sleeping in a hut on the lakeshore, catching fish barehanded, and following the rhythm of the seasons. When this area is transformed into a public national park, they are forced to leave behind their unconventional life and move to the city, where fishing rods are replaced by smartphones and idle afternoons are now spent in classrooms. As the family struggles to conform to modern civilization and maintain their connection to each other and themselves, they each begin to question their place in the world and what their future might be.” (Zeitgeist)

Rock Camp is an institution and cultural phenomenon that has been going on in Los Angeles, New York and other cities since 1996. The brainchild of music producer David Fishof, Rock Camp boasts a jaw-dropping array of rock star “counselors” that include Roger Daltrey, Alice Cooper, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, Nancy Wilson, Joe Perry, Jeff Beck, Slash and countless other rock legends. CONTINUING IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for THE REASON IN JUMP: “Based on the best-selling book by Naoki Higashida, THE REASON I JUMP is an immersive cinematic exploration of neurodiversity through the experiences of nonspeaking autistic people from around the world. The film blends Higashida’s revelatory insights into autism, written when he was just 13, with intimate portraits of five remarkable young people. It opens a window for audiences into an intense and overwhelming, but often joyful, sensory universe. Moments in the lives of each of the characters are linked by the journey of a young Japanese boy through an epic landscape; narrated passages from Naoki’s writing reflect on what his autism means to him and others, how his perception of the world differs, and why he acts in the way he does: the reason he jumps. The film distills these elements into a sensually rich tapestry that leads us to Naoki’s core message: not being able to speak does not mean there is nothing to say.” (Kino Lorber) This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device as well as via AppleTV, Roku or AmazonFireStick. For additional notes regarding connectivity, you can visit the film’s FAQ’s at the bottom of the rental page. Click the picture below to watch the trailer and purchase 72 hour access to this film for $12.

Would you like to know what titles we have planned for our virtual cinema? (Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.) On January 22, art lovers will delight with MY REMBRANDT, and audiences will be intrigued by SOME KIND OF HEAVEN – an interesting look at aging. On Jan. 29, we’ll open RAMS – a British film starring Sam Neill and Miranda Richardson. In early February, we’ll have a new doc about a brilliant artist (though he preferred the term “mathematician”) – M.C. ESCHER: JOURNEY TO INFINITY. Also in February, we are looking at A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX, TWO OF US and COWBOYS. More titles are on the way…stay tuned!
