BBB Free Shredding Event This Saturday

April 12, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

While identity theft can happen to anyone, 2020 was the worst year in history for identity theft reports. The Federal Trade Commission reported cases of identity theft skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The FTC announced it recorded about 1.4 million reports of identity theft incidents in 2020, twice the number of cases reported in 2019.

Make plans to join Better Business Bureau serving Dayton/Miami Valley for free shredding at…

Saturday, April 17, 10 am – 1 pm

Meet River Surfer Jorge Sanchez

April 10, 2021 By GreatMiamiRiverway

Some people are just drawn to the river. Jorge Sanchez is one of those people. When he’s not working to build and grow his company, Mile Two Consulting, Jorge is spending time outside hiking, cycling, or surfing on the Great Miami River. Yes, surfing.

Jorge is the founder and Chief Technology Officer for Mile Two Consulting, a company that builds software for startups, Fortune 500 companies, and the US government. Headquartered in downtown Dayton, Mile Two has close to 100 employees. Their customers rely on Mile Two’s knowledge on making decisions about how and when to adopt and integrate new technologies into business processes. Jorge grew up in Puerto Rico and came to Ohio to attend college. He graduated from the University of Dayton with a computer engineering degree, and Wright State University with a Master’s in Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

While growing up in Puerto Rico, Jorge spent a lot of time swimming and body surfing in the ocean. Jorge said that when he got to Dayton, he had no idea that people could surf on the Great Miami River. Then he took a class from Surf Dayton and was embraced by the community. It reminded him of growing up in Puerto Rico. Surf Dayton is a community information source for everything river stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), surf, and whitewater kayaking related around the region. They offer lessons and host clinics for people interested in river surfing, and whitewater and flatwater SUP.

Jorge loves the Great Miami River, but he also enjoys the adjacent bike trail. When he was training for an Ironman Triathlon, he’d spent many hours cycling on the Great Miami River Recreation Trail and sometimes his wife would pick him up at the end of a ride in Hamilton.

When he’s not on the trails, enjoying the outdoors with his family, or at work, Jorge has volunteered as a bike mechanic for Bicycles for All, a Dayton non-profit organization that accepts donated bikes and repairs them. They sell the adult bikes and donate the youth bikes to children that need one.

Jorge believes the surfing trend on the Great Miami River is only going to get more popular and bring more people to our region. He has met many friendly and helpful people through the Surf Dayton community and recommends everyone get out on the river.

Find your way to a surf lesson on the Great Miami River!

The “I am the Riverway” story series introduces people who live, learn, work, play, and do business in the Riverway. These are the people who bring the Riverway to life and are working to make it vibrant and fun. This is a story as part of the Great Miami Riverway “I am the Riverway” series. Want to add your story? Dayton Made: Famous People From Our City: Kirk Herbstreit

April 9, 2021 By Greg Simms Jr.

The handsome, well spoken guy who hosts ESPN’s College GameDay, and calls most of college football’s most important games, including the College Football Playoff National Championship game, is from the Miami Valley. Kirk Herbstreit, or, “Herbie”, was born in Centerville, and graduated from Centerville High School. As a quarterback for the Elks, he was the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. He also was a standout basketball and baseball player.

Herbstreit was also the starting quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 1989 to 1993, winning letters for all four years. He once threw for a school record 271 yards in a (THE Game) game against Michigan, a record that would stand for 14 years. Herbstreit’s father, Jim Herbstreit, had been a co-captain  of the 1960 Ohio State team, and was later an assistant coach at Ohio State under Woody Hayes.
When Herbstreit was named co-captain in 1992, the two became only the second father-and-son duo to have each been Ohio State captains.

Father and son.

Herbstreit met his wife Allison at Ohio State, where she was a cheerleader. They were married in 1998 and have four sons: identical twins Jake Herbstreit and Tye Herbstreit, Zak Herbstreit, and Chase Herbstreit. The Herbstreit family moved from Ohio to Nashville in 2011.  Jake and Tye are pursuing their career as football players at Clemson.

Kirk’s second career, and his most successful started in 1996, when he officially joined ESPN as on-air talent. He became an analyst on GameDay, which has become a sports institution. He’s also called some of the most legendary college football games of all time with his long time co-host, Chris Fowler. If he doesn’t get into the College Football Hall of Fame, he should be inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

Wright State Theatre presents Sophocles’ ‘Antigone’ in an Outdoor Production This Weekend

April 8, 2021 By Guest Contributor

Wright State University’s Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures continues its spring festival of COVID-conscious performances with an outdoor production of Sophocles’ timeless tragedy “Antigone.”

Performances will be presented on Saturday, April 10, at 6 p.m. and Sunday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at Wright State’s outdoor amphitheatre, next to the Medical Sciences building.

A limited number of tickets are available for free but must be reserved in advance by contacting the Theatre Box Office at 937-775-2500. Tickets will not be available on the day of the performance.

“Antigone” is often called one of the greatest, most moving of the ancient Greek tragedies. It continues to be relevant today because of its depiction of the struggle between individual conscience and state policy and its examination of the nature of human suffering and grief.

Wright State’s production has a contemporary quality, in part because of the modern language translation by Nicholas Rudall, and because it resonates with modern political and social moments in the ways it depicts young people challenging government authority in pursuit of justice.

“This play couldn’t be more relevant as it reflects the hundreds of thousands of people worldwide who will no longer stand for injustice codified in their governments,” said John Lavarnway, “Antigone” director and a Wright State Theatre staff member.

He said it’s an ideal time to produce “Antigone” since it was written to be performed outdoors and since the original actors wore masks the characters’ expressions were written into the dialogue.

“We have come up with a concept that blends the ancient with the modern in this truly timeless play,” Lavarnway said. “The young actors who have been sidelined for a year are so grateful for the opportunity to perform together in person before a live audience.”

NEON NEWS: Judi Dench’s Newest Film + More Oscar Nominees

April 7, 2021 By Jonathan McNeal

Though we’re holding onto everything we’re currently playing (FRENCH EXIT as well as the ANIMATED and LIVE ACTION OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS), we’re going to add quite a bit to the mix this weekend. On Friday, we will open SIX MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT- a spy thriller set days before WWII starring Eddie Izzard and Judi Dench. In addition, we’re adding a handful of screenings of the OSCAR NOMINATED DOCUMENTARY SHORTS.

In our Virtual Cinema, we’re adding two new films. THE MAN WHO SOLD HIS SKIN is nominated for the “Best International Film” Oscar this year, and ROSE PLAYS JULIE is a thriller that speaks as a kind of companion piece to PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN.

NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENTS:

Synopsis for SIX MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT: “’In the summer of 1939, influential families in Nazi Germany have sent their daughters to a finishing school in an English seaside town to learn the language and be ambassadors for a future looking National Socialist. A teacher there sees what is coming and is trying to raise the alarm. But the authorities believe he is the problem.” Starring Eddie Izzard, Judi Dench, James D’Arcy, and Jim Broadbent. (IFC Films) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.

Synopsis for OSCAR NOMINATED SHORT FILMS – DOCUMENTARY: All 5 Academy Award Nominated Documentary Short Films have been assembled for you to see in one place. Starting Friday, you can see these at THE NEON during one of our four special screenings (but if those don’t work for you, they’re still available in our Virtual Cinema). Here are the films: A LOVE SONG FOR LATASHA (USA, 18 min.), DO NOT SPLIT (USA/Norway, 36 min.), HUNGER WARD (USA, 40 min.), COLETTE (France/Germany/USA, 24 min.), and A CONCERTO IS A CONVERSATION (USA, 13 min.). Due to mature themes, this package is not intended for young audiences – our suggested rating is R. If you wish to screen these films virtually, you can watch them on your computer or mobile device or via the Eventive App on your Roku or SmartTV. Please make sure you use this LINK to purchase your at-home access. Click the image below to watch the official trailer for all the shorts.

NEW VIRTUAL ENGAGEMENTS:

Synopsis for ROSE PLAYS JULIE: Available starting April 9! “Rose (Ann Skelly) is at university studying veterinary science. An only child, she has enjoyed a loving relationship with her adoptive parents. However, for as long as Rose can remember she has wanted to know who her biological parents are and the facts of her true identity. After years trying to trace her birth mother, Rose now has a name and a number…and it quickly becomes clear that her birth mother has no wish to have any contact. Rose is shattered. A renewed and deepened sense of rejection compels her to keep going. Rose travels from Dublin to London in an effort to confront her birth mother, Ellen (Orla Brady). Ellen is deeply disturbed when Rose turns up unannounced. The very existence of this young woman threatens the stability of the new life Ellen has painstakingly put together. But Rose proves very tenacious and Ellen is forced to reveal a secret she has kept hidden for over 20 years. This shocking revelation forces Rose to accept the violent nature of how she came into existence. Rose believes she has little to lose but much to gain when she sets out to confront her biological father, Peter (Aidan Gillen).” Tickets are $6.99 for 72 hour access. This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s HELP PAGE. April 6, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

The Woodford Reserve $1,000 Mint Julep™ charity program, one of the Kentucky Derby’s most unique annual traditions, is honoring the Black jockeys who dominated horse racing in its early years.

A total of 100 julep cups* will be available for purchase. Cups numbered 1-11 are gold-plated and sell for $2,500 each. Cups 12-100 are silver-plated and sell for $1,000. Each cup is engraved with the name of one Black jockey and the year or years they won the Derby.

The cups were designed and hand-engraved by From the Vault jeweler in Louisville. Each comes in a bespoke purse designed by Louisville artist Albert Shumake — and each cup is cradled in decorative silk designed by Louisville artist Gwendolyn Kelly. Kelly’s custom pattern is the “four-man clover,” representing the interconnected network of support and strength among Black jockeys, trainers, and groomsmen.  This year’s Woodford Reserve $1,000 and $2,500 Mint Julep Cup sale features 100 cups, and net proceeds will go to the non-profit Project to Preserve African American Turf History (PPAATH).

They each exemplified love for the sport and the pursuit of excellence, despite the inequality and injustice they faced throughout their lives and careers.” – Chris Morris, Woodford Reserve Master Distiller

It features the artwork of Louisville resident Richard Sullivan, a former professional baseball player. Sullivan’s stunning watercolor is of thoroughbreds as they thunder down the stretch. It was designed as a complement to last year’s Derby bottle artwork, which Sullivan also created.

But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung. New York Magazine cheers, “MEAN GIRLS delivers with immense energy, a wicked sense of humor and joyful inside-jokery.” USA Today says, “We’ll let you in on a little secret, because we’re such good friends: GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!”

New Diner Opens in Miamisburg

April 6, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

There’s a new breakfast joint in Miamisburg. Rye Toast opened quietly last week at 1015 S. Main Street, in the building that formerly housed Star City BBQ.  Chef Tom Tiner and his wife Connie bought the building and after years of working in corporate kitchens, they finally have their own place. He said he’d driven by it many times and when the BBQ joint closed in September of 2018 he had called the owner and chatted with him.  As the pandemic changed things, he kept thinking about it, and finally made the decision to become his own boss.

In explaining the logo, Chef Tiner shared that it pays homage to his late father, highlighting his initials R and T. His dad was a marine then served as a sheriff in Waco, Texas who loved to paint. The green behind Rye Toast represents a roller brush, while the circle around the initials is done with a brush.  The 1820 was his father’s call tag used over the radio for police business.

They’ll be serving up breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Saturday  and this past Sat I had a chance to dine with them. I ordered the 1/2 portion of biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs and your choice of bacon or sausage for just 7.25. The biscuits were fluffy and buttery, the gravy was definitely home made.  Chef Tiner explained if they can make it in house, they will, with the exception of their breads, which will be supplied by Klosterman Bakery.

Chef Tiner’s background in senior living facilities and hospitals had him adhering to menu’s created by dietitian’s and corporate chefs, so the freedom to create his own menu’s is one of the best things about having his own place.  But he did add that he was able to hire one of his former cooks DeLonda, he’d worked with  her for 5 years and having an employee he knows and trusts is a huge asset.  He hopes to eventually have a second location she can manage.

The breakfast menu:

Rye Toast Lunch Menu:

Chef Tiner expects to add a few more classics to the lunch menu over time including a hot pastramia and a Russian sandwich.  He’d also like to do some parking lot parties, growing up in Texas he says he makes a mean BBQ and he knows his way around a Carolina pig picking and could even see come clam bakes in the future.  But in the meantime, head on out to Rye Toast and tell them DaytonDining sent you!
