55,000 Pound Plane To Be Pulled For Fundraiser

August 18, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Two nonprofits are teaming up for a unique fundraiser to help families and children with life-threatening medical disorders and critical injuries.  RMHC Dayton and A Special Wish Dayton will be holding a special plane pull event at Dayton International Airport on September 18.

A plane pull is when teams of friends, families, coworkers, service groups and more work together to pull an airplane the fastest. Each team can have up to 20 members. The plane is a CRJ700 which weighs 55,000 pounds. Dayton-based PSA Airlines is donating the use of the plane for the day. Dayton International Airport is offering the space for the event at no cost to organizers.

RMHC Dayton provides a place for families of children receiving medical care to stay overnight at no cost to them for as long as they need. It also serves families of in-patient children through the Ronald McDonald Families Rooms inside Dayton Children’s Hospital and inside Emmett’s Place at Miami Valley Hospital.

“The pandemic forced us to cancel all of our indoor fundraising events, but it never stopped us from serving the families who need us most. Now, we need the community’s help to continue that mission,” said Erika Ward, Donor Relations & Signature Events Manager.

A Special Wish Dayton grants wishes to both children and adolescents from birth through age 20. It serves Auglaize, Darke, Greene, Mercer, Miami, Montgomery, Shelby and northern Warren Counties.

“A Special Wish Foundation is excited to be partnering with RMHC Dayton. Both organizations provide unique services to families who are facing challenging situations,” said David Seyer, Executive Director of A Special Wish Dayton.

“For ASW, the Plane Pull will provide much needed funds to help grant over 85 special wishes to local children with life-threatening illnesses.”

The plane pull is designed to be a safe alternative to traditional indoor fundraisers. It will be held outside to allow social distancing and masks are required.

Plane Pull Transparency Update

The event wouldn’t be possible without the support from PSA Airlines and Dayton International Airport.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our community to show its strength and raise money for a worthy cause,” said Gil Turner, director of Dayton International Airport. “Beyond that, it also is a really fun and exciting event. Who can say they were strong enough to pull a plane?”

“PSA is proud and excited to support this amazing cause. We are looking forward to seeing the strength of the community and these teams versus the CRJ 700!” said Jenna Arnold, Director of Communications and Marketing for PSA Airlines.

Teams can sign up now at https://www.planepulldayton.org/.55,000 Pound Plane To Be Pulled For Fundraiser

A Third Warped Wing Location Announced

August 17, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Warped Wing Brewing Company, headquartered in Downtown Dayton, Ohio, is excited to announce plans for a new Brewery and Taproom location
in Mason, Ohio at 5650 Tylersville Rd (at the corner of 42 and Tylersville Rd). Warped Wing Mason is planned to open in Fall 2021. The 13,000 square foot facility will boast a large taproom with outdoor biergarten, small pilot brewing system, and eventually a flexible event space.  Initially, there will be a focus on opening the main dining area and patio space, with expanded seating and private rental options to be developed at a later time.

“This new site has a rich history in the Mason community and the building itself has such a unique story. We want to pay homage to that history while bringing some new life to the space,” said Nick Bowman, co-founder and VP of Sales and Marketing. “We are excited to join the Mason community and be part of its growing brewery scene,” said Bowman.

“Our plan is to put a small pilot brewing system into the Rathskeller (basement) of the building. The size is TBD as we have not yet finished contracting it. I believe we are going to focus on making “high gravity” or stronger beers on it, allowing us to focus on other styles at the Springboro plant,” said John Haggerty, co-founder and Brewmaster. “Having said that, there really are no rules and we will make what makes sense at the time at either location. In the end, it just gives us that much more flexibility in what we do on the pilot systems,” said Haggerty.
The new facility will not only feature a small pilot brewing system, beers on tap, 6pk cans and bottles to go, but will also offer a full service dining experience similar to that of the Warped Wing Barrel Room & Smokery located in Springboro, Ohio.

“Our food program getting started will focus on smoked meats. We do traditional BBQ with classic housemade sides inspired by BBQ all over the country but we are not just a BBQ place as we are constantly experimenting with other ways to use smoked meats in non-traditional ways, from tacos to poutine. We have a focus on scratch-made sides and the highest quality ingredients,” said Erin O’Neill, Culinary Director & General Manager of Retail Operations. O’Neill adds, “One of my favorite things about our culinary program is how each location takes on its
own personality over time and we get to express that personality through our food specials and seasonal menu changes. From our signature bison bacon burger and our smoked wings, to our unique appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and tacos, we truly feel we have something for everyone.”’

With a unique focus on smoked and beer-infused foods, the new taproom will bring an exciting menu to complement Warped Wing’s robust beer selection. Other libations available in the Taproom will include hard cider, wine, and a spirits menu with a focus on specialty cocktails, as well as non-alcoholic options like mocktails and housemade sodas.

Warped Wing is now in the process of posting and interviewing for positions at the new Warped Wing Mason location. Please visit warpedwing.com/careers for more information.

Crooked Handle Brewing Co. Adding 2nd Location

August 17, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

On Saturday, Crooked Handle Brewing Company announced plans to open a second brewpub in downtown Piqua. The project will transform an existing 10,000 square foot building to include a brewery, warehouse style beer hall, a full kitchen, an event space, and an outdoor biergarten overlooking Piqua’s emerging Lock Nine Park.

The adaptive reuse project was announced at the “Down A River – Down A Beer” event which is held annually along the Great Miami Riverway in Piqua. City of Piqua Community and Economic Development Director Chris Schmiesing made the announcement commenting, “Crooked Handle Brewing Company is a first-class operation that offers quality food, drinks and entertainment in a relaxing atmosphere, and we are extremely excited to welcome them to our community.”

Crooked Handle Brewing Company will be purchasing the property located at 123 N. Main Street from Piqua Granite and Marble Company. The brick structure dates back to the early 1900’s, and was previously occupied by motorcycle and car dealerships and numerous other uses. The new plans for the building call for the removal of various partitions and equipment to highlight the historic character of the building. The new configuration of the building will include two primary spaces, one for dining and the other for special events. The Warehouse Beer Hall will be located in the more industrial former garage space and will be the primary drinking and dining area and feature views of the brewery operations and provide access to the extensive patio areas overlooking the Lock Nine Park. The former display area, dubbed the Showroom, features large windows along the Main Street frontage and will function as a flexible space that can accommodate a variety of special event types. A full-service kitchen will be centrally located between the two public spaces with an order and pickup window easily accessible to both sides. The exterior of the building will feature attractive signage, a new entry inviting guests into the brewpub and a biergarten covered by a trellis fabricated from a dismantled gantry crane formerly used by the monument business.

Crooked Handle Brewing Company opened its first location in December of 2015 in Springboro Ohio, where they produce award winning craft beers, and offer a premium selection of wines, ciders, spirits, signature cocktails, and live music. In 2020 CHBC added a full kitchen that is now serving a menu of made from scratch pub fare. The Piqua location will provide similar and expanded offerings along with the Showroom being available to rent for special events.

Crooked Handle Brewing Company is owned by Jason and Kristy Moore, and Jeff and Emily Pedro. When asked what attracted them to Piqua they commented, “The timing was right. We really like the vision for the redevelopment of the downtown riverfront, and the location is ideal for what we offer. We see a real opportunity in Piqua and are excited to be a part of what is happening in the community.”

The design team for the project includes Gamble Associates, PorterFanna Architecture, Booker Design Collaborative, Omloop and Choice One Engineering. Urban Improvement Company (UIC) is the development consultant and Denligner Construction will serve as the general contractor for the project. The renovation work is expected to begin fall 2021 and be complete by late summer 2022.

Crazy King Burrito Now Open in Fairborn

August 15, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s the very first US franchise for this Mexican based burrito eatery.  Crazy King  Burrito opened quietly last Friday in the strip mall across from Wright State University, that also houses Texas Road House, One Eyed Jacks and Bob Evans,  but we don’t think they’ll keep it quiet for long!  With 12 burrito’s on the menu, from a simple bean and cheese, to the Tinga de Poll0 (shredded chicken), a Loco Veggie, and the signature Crazy King-a surf & turf combo with asada and shrimp, they range in price from $4-12. All menu items can also be served as a bowl instead of burrito.  They  feature bottled Jarrito soda’s in pineapple, orang mandarin, mango, strawberry, apple and watermelon, as well as coca-cola products and a tasty Horchata Rick drink with an almond/cinnamon finish. For dessert they offer a key lime flavored Mexican Ice Box Cake.

Using the best family recipes that were passed down from generation to generation, founders Jaime and Haidee Gonzalez, opened a small restaurant on the beautiful island of Cozumel in 2012 that still prospers to this day! Unlike other Mexican restaurants, their burrito recipes are exactly the same as what they served in our original hometown. 100% authentic, from our home to yours! Local franchise owners DeShawn Davis, who grew up in his families Cincinnati soul food restaurant and his business partner Walter Jones were just so impressed with the food and customer  service, Davis said, “it was just a no-brainer for us to decide to open a location.” If things go well, they have the rights to open more locations in the area.

I had the Crazy King Burrito- which was Tortilla, Beans, Rice, Cheese, Asada, Shrimp, Butter, Garlic, Onion, House Sauce (Chipotle), Lettuce, Sour Cream. It was huge and I ended up taking half of it home for another meal.  They offer 3 sauces you can add to your meal, a Diablo, which is crazy spicy hot, a Chipotle and a Verde sauce.

$8 Million Grant Launches Northwest Dayton Partnership

August 13, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Community leaders Thursday gathered at the Northwest Branch of the Dayton Metro Library to announce the launch of the Northwest Dayton Partnership, a collaborative, place-based effort to build economic and racial equity for Northwest Dayton’s children and the adults in their lives.

“The Northwest Dayton Partnership is the culmination of years of discussions and planning for how to improve outcomes for kids and families in this critical corner of our city. I am thrilled that this work is moving forward to intentionally focus on investing in existing community leadership and creating better outcomes for Black students. I’m grateful for the leadership of all of the partners involved and look forward to seeing this work come to fruition,’ said Mayor Nan Whaley in a written statement.

Commissioner Jeff Mims represented the Dayton City Commission at the event.

The Northwest Dayton Partnership brings together people and public and private sector organizations working together to dramatically improve results at a population level and reduce racial disparities by changing the status quo with sustained, systemic solutions, including:

  • Taking a two-generation approach to building well-being by intentionally and simultaneously working with both children and the adults in their lives;
  • Shifting power to deeply connected, primarily Black-led community organizations;
  • Building high-quality early childhood education for children birth to age five;
  • Creating quality K-12 schools that close opportunity gaps;
  • Supporting community-based institutions’ racial and economic equity work; and
  • Articulating and advocating for policy priorities developed with youth, families, and community residents to impact education and economic mobility

“We at Harlem Children’s Zone are committed to cradle-to-career models across the nation, and we have a generation of data to prove the effectiveness of place-based work,’” said Chief Executive Officer Kwame Owusu-Kesse in a written statement. “We are inspired by the Northwest Dayton Partnership’s impactful, on-the-ground work and are excited to see the effect on the future outcomes of young people here in Dayton.’

The Northwest Dayton Partnership community steering committee guides the work and builds upon community assets, including neighborhood associations, DPS neighborhood school centers, Dayton Metro Library Northwest Branch, Gem City Market, Omega CDC Hope Center, Preschool Promise, and Salem Avenue Reconstruction. Current steering committee members include Cheryl Garrett, Geraldine Pegues, Chad Sloss, Sharon Taste and Lauretta Williams, all of whom live or work in Northwest Dayton.

“The Northwest Dayton Partnership will enhance and further the existing work that educators, community leaders, residents, and organizations have done to remove barriers to equitable education and affordable daycare. Removing such barriers can elevate families above their circumstances and help children excel in and outside the classroom. The stabilization of families will result in the stabilization of our neighborhoods,” says Sharon Taste, who manages the Northwest Branch of the Dayton Metro Library in addition to serving on the Northwest Dayton Partnership steering committee.

As part of its Place Matters portfolio, national funder Blue Meridian Partners provides catalytic supports for the Northwest Dayton Partnership with a two-year, $8 million grant to develop a comprehensive six- to ten-year vision that aligns opportunities, bolsters the infrastructure critical for the community’s success and equips families to pursue their goals and thrive.

“We are excited about the opportunity to work with the Northwest Dayton Partnership,” said Founder and President of Harlem Children’s Zone Geoffrey Canada in a written statement. “We are looking for models around the country on how to effectively address the complexities of race, poverty, and education. The Northwest Dayton Partnership has the potential to serve as a model on how to address, and ultimately solve, these profound issues.”

Canada and the team at the William Julius Wilson Institute of the Harlem Children’s Zone work with Blue Meridian Partners to provide the tools and resources necessary to catalyze the success of place-based partnerships like the Northwest Dayton Partnership.

Learn to Earn Dayton serves as the backbone organization for the Northwest Dayton Partnership. As the backbone organization, Learn to Earn convenes the full set of partners and provides the partnership with core supports to achieve the partnership’s shared vision.

“Our job as the Northwest Dayton Partnership backbone organization is to accelerate the amazing work being done by deeply-connected community leaders and facilitate collaboration so that all the organizations in Northwest Dayton can work towards their common goals,” says Learn to Earn Dayton CEO Kristina Scott.

The Dayton Foundation provides the Northwest Dayton Partnership team members with technical assistance on capacity building, impact investing and leveraging philanthropic investment to support partnership goals.

“Blue Meridian Partner’s generous investment in the Dayton community comes at a critical time in closing the economic gap. Thanks to this grant, the Northwest Dayton Partnership can align and leverage resources, as well as increase linkages across agencies, to build equitable neighborhoods and improve life outcomes for area youth and families,” says Michael M. Parks, CFRE, president of The Dayton Foundation.

Learn to Earn Dayton fosters the success of all Montgomery County children from birth until they graduate from college or earn a high-quality credential. Our big goal is for 60 percent of Montgomery County’s working-age adults to have a 2-year or 4-year college degree or a high-quality credential by 2025.

Dayton Steel Exhibit Debuts

August 13, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

The work of Mike Elsass, one of Dayton’s most prominent and prolific artists, will debut this Friday at a first-of-its-kind art opening this Friday at the Dana L. Wiley Gallery, at 1001 East Second Street (B/C Entrance-Second Floor) in Dayton.

Experience Mike Elsass’ work in ways it has never been seen before in the special curation “Dayton Steel” debuting Friday, August 13 through October 17, 2021.

The exhibit will open to the public with a special event from 7-9 p.m. this Friday, during which new pieces will debut and be displayed in interesting and exciting ways that have never been seen before, putting new twists on the “brush before brain” philosophy that earned Elsass his reputation. The event is open to the public and will feature heavy hors d’oeuvres from acclaimed Chef Joseph Fish.

Elsass paints–and lives–by the philosophy that there are no mistakes, pushing people to embrace action before thought, and inspiring them to open their minds and engage with the unexpected. People get stuck in their own heads. Elsass forces them out. He never knows what he is painting until it’s done, and it’s usually more about the journey than the result.

Elsass has been one of the most generous and prolific artists in the history of Dayton, having invested $2.5 million into beautifying spaces, donating artwork and partnering with nonprofits to create meaningful experiences through art. Throughout the pandemic, he donated even more artwork to local businesses to be auctioned off, and exchanged artwork for donations to area nonprofits in an effort to keep the energy up in the region.

Mike’s art celebrates imperfection, bringing together what’s typically abandoned and forgotten into breathtaking statement pieces that capture emotion through composition. Often using materials discarded as garbage, Mike uses things like tar, oil, grit, silicate sand, spent whiskey mash–and this year, even some cicadas–to intentionally deteriorate his pieces before blanketing them with layer upon layer of paint in various colors.

Elsass’ enchanting and eclectic studio space now occupies 9,000 square feet of studio space at Front Street Galleries, which is also home to Dana L. Wiley Gallery, where Dayton Steel will debut on Friday.

The show will continue through Oct. 17, with a special artist talk:

SEPTEMBER 23RD, 7PM

Join Mike Elsass for a discussion on his artwork, process and how his artwork has impacted the Dayton community.

According to Chef/Owner Zackary Weiner, “The menu will stay static for 45-60 days at a time with the exception of the daily pastry which will change weekly. Quantities of this pastry will be limited and are first come first serve.  We will have a limited special brunch cocktail menu but our full wine, beer, and sake menu will be available.”

The both bars will be reserved for walk-ins only, but tables are available for reservation online.

Here’s a sample of the brunch menu:
