East vs West Beer Dinner

March 10, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

When you talk about an East Coast/ West Coast rivalry  coming to The Farifield Commons Mall, most people will be thinking about rap music.  But beer brewers are just as competitive about their products. Restaurateur Glen Brailey will host a dinner that brings the feud to his Beavercreek eatery on Tueday, March 15th at 7pm.  Guests will be able to sample and choose sides between New Hampshire’s Smutty Nose Brewing or California’s 21st Amendment Brewing.  Guests will need to make advance reservations by calling Spinoza at 937.426.7799.  Your ticket to the feud will run you $26.95  plus tax & gratuity.

Here’s the menu for the event:

WELCOME

Smuttynose Maibock (draft)

(Big Beer Series) Style: Maibock / Hellesbock ABV: 7.7%

Maibocks are a traditional Teutonic seasonal specialty. The Smuttynose version is brewed to be hugely malty and subtly finished with a variety of continental hops and an eye-pleasing russet brown color.  This particular keg has been cellered since May, 2009.  How will it taste?  We’ll see…

Paired with

Baked Wild Boar “Pockets” with Aged Gruyere and Tarragon Aioli

SALAD

21st Amendment Bitter American (can)

Style: American Pale Ale ABV: 4.7%

Like our founding fathers, arguing over a few pints of ale, this seasonal session ale provides the perfect forum to air all your grievances. This extra pale ale has lower alcohol but all the flavor and hop aroma you expect from a much bigger beer.

Paired with

Japanese Salad of Artisan Lettuce Mix, Wasabi Peas, and Ponzu Ginger Dressing

PIZZA FIRST COURSE

Smuttynose Finest Kind (draft)

Style: East Coast IPA ABV: 6.2%

The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze.  At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find.

Paired with

Sopressata Pizza with crushed San Marzano Tomatoes, Mediterranean Sea Salt, Garlic-infused Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Fresh “Fior di Latte” Mozzarella, Peppered Salami, and Fresh Basil on a thin crust

INTERMEZZO CHEESE COURSE

21st Amendment Monk’s Blood (draft)

Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale ABV: 8.3%

Paired with

French Morbier Cheese & Snofrisk Norwegian Mountain Semi-Hard Goat Cheese

PIZZA SECOND COURSE

21st Amendment IPA (draft)

Style: West Coast IPA ABV:

Deep golden color. Citrus and piney hop aromas. Assertive malt backbone supporting the overwhelming bitterness. Dry hopped in the fermenter with four types of hops giving an explosive hop aroma. With an IBU of 70, many refer to this IPA as Nectar of the Gods. Judge for yourself.

Paired with

Spanish Chicken Pizza with Spinoza’s Original Crust, Smoked Chicken, Chorizo Sausage, Sauteed Red Onions and Mozzarella on a base of Sundried Tomato Tapenade

DESSERT

Smuttynose Wheat Wine

Style: Wheat Wine ABV: 10.7%

A recently created American style, wheat wine, as its name implies, is a strong ale made with a substantial measure of malted wheat as well as barley. Close cousin to barley wines, wheat wines are typically strong, full bodied, deep gold to amber in color and feature a subtle soft tangy flavor derived from their wheat malt.

Paired with

Zeppoli  – “Italian Doughnuts” served warm with powdered sugar

If you’re not celebrating out and about, may we suggest you stop by your favorite bakery and and least pick up a King Cake!

History of Mardi Gras King Cake

Hundreds of thousands of King Cakes are eaten during Mardi Gras each year in New Orleans, Louisiana. In fact, a Mardi Gras party would not be authentic without the traditional King Cake as the center of the party.

The cake is made with a rich Danish dough, baked and covered with a sugar topping in Mardi Gras colors; purple representing justice, green representing faith, and gold representing power.

Originally objects such as coins, beans, pecans, and peas were hidden inside of every King Cake. Wealthy Louisiana plantation owners in the later 1800s would sometimes put a precious stone or jewel in their King Cakes. In the mid-1900s, a small plastic baby became the symbol of this Holy Day and was placed inside of each King Cake.

The New Orleans tradition is that each person takes a piece of cake hoping to find the plastic baby inside. The recipient of the plastic baby is “crowned” King or Queen for the day and that person is obligated to host the following year’s party and supply the King Cake.

Here’s to becoming the King or Queen! Cheers!

Pancakes for A Cause

February 22, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby 5 Comments

Join thousands of people in the Dayton area for a pancake brunch  to celebrate the 21st annual Day of Caring on Sunday, February 27th.   For just $6, $4 for seniors and children you’ll get pancakes and sausage.  Some locations have expanded the menu and some also offer Indian Food like chicken curry, vegetables, rice and nan.  Created by Jan Venkayya in 1991 as a day to bring awareness to local hunger and homelessness, this event continues to grow.   The grass roots organization, which started out with 12 locations in Montgomery County, has grown and this year includes 47 sites, including Cincinnati and Richmond, Indiana.

Funds raised from the local brunches go to help local homeless and housing coalitions.  Day of Caring has received approximately $1 million of in-kind donations from area corporations and individuals.  Besides raising awareness and funds for the hungry, another goal of the organizations is to encourage volunteerism and teach individuals to participate and see the difference they can make.

The Day of Caring Symbol signifies founder Venkayya’s expectations for the event.  The outer circle represents the continuing act of caring and the world in which we all exist.  The solid circle represents a single act of caring, and, as a single drop of water falls onto a pool of water creating ripples (represented by the 3 partial concentric circles), so does the single act of caring have a continuous effect on those who benefit from its action.

10 ?’s with Franco

February 21, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

franco-duroniaFranco Germano grew up in Italy, then came to America at age 18.  It wasn’t long after that he joined the Army, serving as a mess sergeant during the Vietnam War.  In 1976, he opened his dream, Franco’s Ristorante Italiano.  He often claims he is simply carrying out the tradition of his “mamma”, feeding friends and family.  Franco is now sharing his love of Italian cooking by launching a new service- “Your Traveling Chef“.  Kicking off  with 2 cooking demonstration classes at Southern Ohio Kitchens in March, Franco fights the Winter Blues and Franco cooks for Spring will each be 3 hour classes where you’ll learn how to make a delicious meal, pair it with a luscious wine and make some new friends.  Franco is also willing to come to your house and share an afternoon or evening cooking with you and your friends.

Update:  Franco passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the age of  73.  The Restaurant he opened is now being run by his son Nick.

Here Franco gives us his answers to our 10 questions:

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?
One?  Garlic, tomatoes, olive oil. Great ingredients.  Great basics.

What ingredient do you dread?
Ingredients for Chinese cooking like soy sauce, etc.  Have no idea what to do with them and make them work.

What’s your favorite dish to make?
Franco’s World-Famous Spaghetti.  My invention.  Not creation.  Invention.  No one else can follow it.

What’s your favorite pig out food?
Salami, Prosciutto, real mozzarella, Kalamata Olives.  I can eat them daily.  It’s going to kill me, but I love them.

What restaurant, other than your own do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley? oum4oshWMNIcRG
Hickory Bar-B-Que on Brown St.  Steak and chicken barbecue.  Fantastico!

What’s your best advice for home chefs?
Follow the recipe and be sure to use quality ingredients.  Don’t get cheap!!!

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?
My parents – fantastic people and fantastic cooks.  Tommy Lasorda because he loves Italian food.  Andrea Bocelli.  His voice is phenomenal.

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?
I look up to my mother.  A terrific cook.  True connoisseur.

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?
Golf, golf, & golf.

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:
Our lucky break was with a restaurant disaster.  An hour before opening, someone snuck in our back door and set the women’s restroom on fire.  We could smell something burning but couldn’t locate it at first.  I looked outside thinking it was at the Chinese restaurant that shares our building.  They were looking outside thinking it was us.  I came back in and thought to check the restrooms.  The men’s room was fine.  When I opened the women’s restroom door, POOF!!  I was completely black head to toe.  We put out the fire and still managed to open on time but I could not come out of the kitchen.  I was lucky I didn’t lose my life or my business that night.

Interesting story….
In 2005, the Senior Open was in Dayton.  I received a call from Tom Watson asking if he could get a table for two.  He said he was waiting at another restaurant in town that does not take reservations and did not want to wait the two and a half hours he was being quoted.  I told him to come on down.  A few minutes later, he called to see if he could make another reservation.  He ended up bringing a large group from the other restaurant.  Did I mention I like golf?

The University of Dayton is a pioneer in human rights education. In 1998, the University launched the country’s first undergraduate human rights program. In 2007, the University of Dayton began offering a bachelor’s degree in human rights studies.

Students have been instrumental in helping encourage Ohio legislators to pass Senate Bill 235, making human trafficking a felony. University of Dayton representatives attended the ceremony when former Gov. Ted Strickland signed the bill into law in December.

They’ve also been heavily involved in the creation of Under Our Noses: Modern Day Slavery and What You Can Do About It at the Dayton International Peace Museum, 208 W. Monument Ave. The free multimedia exhibit, which runs through the end of February, examines human trafficking in the region and the nation. Visitors also will learn how they can help combat human trafficking on the local, state and national levels. The museum’s hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Need a treat for your office for Valentine’s Day?  Why not order up something sweet that can help others as well?

Butter Cafe on Brown Street in Dayton is raising money for AIDS awareness, with a RED VELVET CUPCAKE and delicious Frosted SUGAR COOKIE sale. (Having sampled these, I can tell you the generous topping of cream cheese frosting is finger licking good!)

One of the co-owners, Sarah, will be riding the AIDS/LifeCycle bike ride 545 miles from San Francisco to LA on June 5th – 11th.  To raise money for the ride, Butter Cafe got creative and decided to use their goodies to gain the necessary funds. They will also be partnering locally with AIDS Resource Center Ohio (ARC Ohio) to keep some of the proceeds here in the Miami Valley.

Cupcakes $2.99     – buy a dozen and save $6

Cookies $1.50

Hey Hop-Heads – This One’s For You!

February 10, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

The Hoptimum was created during on of Sierra Nevada’s “Beer Camps,” a new program where people — usually beer distributors, retailers and others — spend two days at the brewery’s pilot brewhouse learning about the brewery and making their own small batch of beer.  After the success of the single batch, beer camp Hoptimum, Sierra Nevada tweaked the formula for a commercial release, which they describe as follows:

Hops, hops, and more hops are the stars of this big, whole-cone Imperial IPA. Resinous “new-school” and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit — all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced.

alcohol content 10.4% by volume BITTERING hops German Magnum
beginning gravity 22.8 Plato AROMA hops Simcoe & New Proprietary Variety
ending gravity 4.5 Plato DRY hops Simcoe & New Proprietary Variety
bitterness units 100 TORPEDO hops Citra & Chinook
yeast Ale malts Two-row Pale, Golden Promise, Munich & Wheat

Another Discount Deal Player Comes To The Table

February 9, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

First there were the radio and tv station 1/2 deals, then Groupon, and  Living Social entered the market. Followed by DoubleTake Deals and now, the newest player in the discount certificate business is DealSwarm, launced by Cox Media Group. The site has online discounts of 50 percent or more on local dining, entertainment and other services. Customers register at the site to get daily e-mail alerts about discount offers in their area.

Today’s offer is particularly strong- for $1 you can get $10 worth of  pizza, pasta or calzones at Kettering’s Italian Oven located on Wilmington Avenue.  So grab your credit card, shop online and enjoy your deal!

And in the spirit of full disclosure, a couple of these programs have a referral element, so if you buy a certificate from my link, I will get a credit with their program.

Goodbye Tiger, Hello Rabbit

February 2, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby 1 Comment

According to the Chinese Almanac, tonight at midnight the tiger leaves us and makes way for the Year of the Rabbit.   Each year of the 12-year cycle is named after an animal. Each animal has a different personality and different characteristics that are believed to be the traits of a person born in that year, and which determine their success and happiness. The rabbit largely represents tranquility and calm.  In Chinese astrology, the rabbit sign is further divided into subcategories: metal, water, wood, fire and earth. The year 2011 falls under the metal category. ChineseZodiac.com says metal “gives Rabbits more strength, resilience and determination.” As a result, the site says, metal rabbits are “more intense in their actions, whether they’re work-related or romantic.”

What that all really means to me is that there are usually some incredible meals served up at our local Asian eateries to celebrate the New Year!  So here’s a quick round up of what’s available:
