SUMMARY:Red Shoes Dayton 25
DESCRIPTION:Red Shoes Dayton 25 has the honor of representing the Midwest in commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.\nThis compelling\, symbolic art exhibit will be held at the Downtown Dayton Metro Library in their beautiful Atrium\, from November 21-25\, 2025. Each pair of Red Shoes was painted for this exhibit by survivors of violence\, local artists and supporters. We stand with them to bring awareness\, protest violence\, and to pause to reflect.\nThe public ceremony will commence on November 22\, 2025 at 2pm\, and will include the reading of our proclamation from the City of Dayton by Neenah Ellis\, a reading of the Poem “These Shoes” and atribute played by cellist Tara Mar.\n“25 Red Shoes” was originally launched in 2009 by international artist Elina Chauvet’s influential art installation “Zapatos Rojos”\, to bring awareness and protest Domestic Violence after her own sister died in an act of violence inflicted by her husband. It has since become a global event\, with installations in international cities worldwide.\nGlobally\, 140 women and girls are killed by a family member or intimate partner every day. 17% of those murders take place in the United States. 29% of women in the US have reported a form of violence.\nThis event is free and open to all. Resources will be available on-site about supporting survivors of domestic violence.\nFor more information about the global movement\, please visit www.iwiniwin.org

SUMMARY:Wright Library to Host Author Gilbert King
DESCRIPTION:Wright Memorial Public Library is pleased to present a special evening of conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Gilbert King on Friday\, November 7 at 5:00 p.m. to kick off the 2025 Dayton Literary Peace Prize weekend. Wright Library’s Community Room seating capacity is 80\, so please arrive early to ensure your seat. The program will also be livestreamed through Zoom\, with a link available at wrightlibrary.org. \nKnown for his narrative nonfiction exploring issues of civil rights and injustice\, King was a 2013 runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for his New York Times bestseller\, Devil in the Grove\, which also garnered the Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction. \nThe Dayton Literary Peace Prize\, inaugurated in 2006\, is the first and only annual U.S. literary award recognizing the power of the written word to promote peace. “Gilbert King’s work embodies the spirit of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. We are honored to host him for what is certain to be an insightful conversation\,” said Wright Library Director Kristi Hale. \nHis latest book\, Bone Valley: A True Story of Injustice and Redemption in the Heart of Florida\, was published in October 2025. Bone Valley is the result of King’s multi-year investigation into the story of Leo Schofield of Lakeland\, Fla.\, who was convicted of his wife’s murder in 1988 after a flawed investigation and inadequate defense – despite maintaining his innocence. Schofield served over 30 years and was declared innocent\, and released\, in 2024.  King also produces and hosts a multi-part narrative podcast\, also called Bone Valley\, about the case\, which is currently in its third season. \nKing has written about race\, civil rights\, and the death penalty for the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, and The Atlantic\, and he was a 2019-2020 fellow at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Writers and Scholars at the New York Public Library. King’s earlier books include The Execution of Willie Francis (2008)\, and Beneath a Ruthless Sun (2018). He lives in Brooklyn. \nThe November 7th author talk at Wright Library is made possible with support from the Wright Memorial Library Foundation and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation.

SUMMARY:EcoTalk: Wetland Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Donnie Knight – US Fish and Wildlife Services \nMonitoring an H2Ohio Wetland in Clermont County – Performance of a Floodplain Riverine Wetland for Runoff Treatment \nRyan Winston\, PhD\, PE\, Associate Professor\, The Ohio State University \nThis EcoTalk will focus on a large constructed wetland complex constructed in 2022 near Williamsburg\, Ohio. This wetland treats stormwater from the East Fork of the Little Miami River during rainfall events\, reducing nutrients upstream of Harsha Lake\, which is impacted by algal blooms. As part of the wetland complex construction\, an abandoned drinking water reservoir was repurposed to provide storage for flows upstream of the wetland. This talk will report on 2 years of monitoring and hydraulic modeling that has been undertaken thus far by Ohio State University to help to benchmark water quality treatment by floodplain wetlands. The data support the use of these systems for flood mitigation and to improve water quality. \nRyan Winston is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Food\, Agricultural\, and Biological Engineering and Civil\, Environmental\, and Geodetic Engineering at Ohio State University. He is also a Core Faculty of the OSU Sustainability Institute. Ryan leads the Ohio State University Stormwater Management Program\, which provides urban stormwater and stream management research and technical assistance to urban water to federal and state agencies\, local governments\, and watershed groups. We conduct applied research at the practice\, site\, and small watershed scales to help understand the cost\, benefits and ecosystem services provided by stormwater control measures. Ryan has led more than 100 research projects focused on urban stormwater monitoring and modeling. Ryan has particular interest in applying lessons learned in field-based research projects to inform design of new stormwater controls.
