DESCRIPTION:Donnie Knight – US Fish and Wildlife Services \nMonitoring an H2Ohio Wetland in Clermont County – Performance of a Floodplain Riverine Wetland for Runoff Treatment \nRyan Winston\, PhD\, PE\, Associate Professor\, The Ohio State University \nThis EcoTalk will focus on a large constructed wetland complex constructed in 2022 near Williamsburg\, Ohio. This wetland treats stormwater from the East Fork of the Little Miami River during rainfall events\, reducing nutrients upstream of Harsha Lake\, which is impacted by algal blooms. As part of the wetland complex construction\, an abandoned drinking water reservoir was repurposed to provide storage for flows upstream of the wetland. This talk will report on 2 years of monitoring and hydraulic modeling that has been undertaken thus far by Ohio State University to help to benchmark water quality treatment by floodplain wetlands. The data support the use of these systems for flood mitigation and to improve water quality. \nRyan Winston is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Food\, Agricultural\, and Biological Engineering and Civil\, Environmental\, and Geodetic Engineering at Ohio State University. He is also a Core Faculty of the OSU Sustainability Institute. Ryan leads the Ohio State University Stormwater Management Program\, which provides urban stormwater and stream management research and technical assistance to urban water to federal and state agencies\, local governments\, and watershed groups. We conduct applied research at the practice\, site\, and small watershed scales to help understand the cost\, benefits and ecosystem services provided by stormwater control measures. Ryan has led more than 100 research projects focused on urban stormwater monitoring and modeling. Ryan has particular interest in applying lessons learned in field-based research projects to inform design of new stormwater controls.

DESCRIPTION:2025 marks the festival’s 45th year and the 26th year for our downtown site. RAIN\, SHINE or SNOW!  Expect: \nFood – Pork Chops\, Hot Dogs\, Chicken Noodles\, Apple Dumplings\, Walking Tacos\, Funnel cakes\, Sausages\, Hamburgers\, Peanuts in the shell and by the bag\, Shaved Ice and of course\, APPLE BUTTER. \nCrafts and Gifts – All craft booths are judged by the committee and are of homemade quality. Manufactured crafts are not allowed in the festival. \nDemonstrations – The Enon Community Historical Society volunteers demonstrate the Apple Butter production by cooking all apple butter sold over a fire in copper kettles. \nMusic and Entertainment – Music from the past adds to the festival atmosphere throughout the entire festival. Greenon High School band and choir entertain the public on Saturday at the Opening Ceremony at 10 a.m. \nThe Enon Community Historical Society sponsors the annual Enon Apple Butter Festival as a community service project. The Historical Society makes apple butter the old-fashioned way in six\, 50-gallon copper kettles\, cooked over open wood-burning fires. Canning and selling of the apple butter is done at the festival in the afternoon as it becomes ready. Annual attendance is estimated at 8-10\,000 for the two days. Admission to the festival grounds is free. Free parking is available. Note – please do not bring your pets to the Apple Butter Festival. \nCome Visit us the second full weekend of October!  Fun for the whole Family! Money raised by Oktoberfest helps support everything we do at the Dayton Art Institute. \nJoin us on Friday\, September 26 as we kick off Oktoberfest weekend with the annual Lederhosen Lunch\, followed by the Preview Party. \nOktoberfest Hours\nLederhosen Lunch: 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.- free to attend \nPreview Party: 7-11 p.m. \nOktoberfest – Saturday: Noon-11 p.m.\nOktoberfest – Sunday: Noon-7 p.m. \nPARKING & SHUTTLES\nPark for free at the University of Dayton parking lot on River Park Drive\, between Patterson Blvd & Main St\, behind the Dayton Marriott. From the lot\, catch the free Oktoberfest shuttle directly to the event.
