Dayton’s Rainbow Connection

March 30, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Local mom Aubrey Medlin “first read about rainbows being displayed in Italy along with the phrase  “Tutto andra’ bene,” or “Everything will be OK,” and I just thought it was such a nice gesture of hope, love, and peace. Then I read an article about a person in Philadelphia who added to the fun by not only displaying rainbows, but also creating a scavenger hunt for the kids in the neighborhood”
“We live in the Deweese-Ridgecrest neighborhood–we have great neighbors, and I knew many of them would participate if I proposed the idea. They did, and as more and more neighbors joined in I thought, why not make this scavenger hunt available to anyone who wants to participate in the Dayton area? We could all use something to brighten our days…and to keep our kids entertained! I shared the info on my own FB page, and it grew from there. So many people have joined in…it’s been fun.”

Medlin shares “We have a facebook page with over 2,100 member called Dayton’s Rainbow Connection where people can add their address to the scavenger hunt map and share photos of their rainbows, etc.” Join the page and you can download a google doc that lists all the places you can then head out and begin your rainbow search.
Aubrey has been mapping out the rainbows as they find them, now using google maps to plot them.  “My son loves anything involving a map, so he has been happy to carry the map around and mark off our “found” rainbows. We even found some in some other neighborhoods while we were driving to pick up our groceries on a rainy day.”
The variety and creativity or the rainbows is simply amazing.  From small hand drawn pictures to major craft projects and some installations that truly look like professional artist exhibits.
This rainbow connection has even gotten coverage on the local news.

HOW IT WORKS:

1. Display a rainbow in your front window or in another area that is visible from the street. Get as creative as you want with it while sticking to the “rainbow” theme. For examples, check out the photos posted in the group.

2. Submit your address here to have it added to the scavenger hunt map–>https://forms.gle/amoh6qBn29jgRcwh7. This is the simplest and quickest way for me to add your address to the map. *Please do not submit your address via a post/message/comment in the group as it is likely to get lost among the other posts in the group.* If you do not see your address on the map within 24 hours of submitting it, please send me a private message.

4. Go hunting for rainbows! Have fun! Share your experience/photos/rainbows far and wide (be sure to tag them with #daytonsrainbowconnection)! ?
