Stivers Showcase of Student Films

On Tuesday, the 20^th of May, at 7:30 pm, at The Neon Movie Theater on 5^th Street,
Stivers School for the Arts, Film/Video and Animation Studio
will Present THE SHOWCASE

This eclectic compilation of short films includes absurdly comedic work, as well as hard hitting documentaries.

Some of these films have already won national and regional awards. Following the show, there will be a Q & A with the student filmmakers.

Tickets will be $5.00 during the pre-sale and $7.00 at the door. Tickets are available at the Neon box office and at Stivers in room 1206, the Film/Video and Animation Studio.

The Showcase has been going on for over 7 years and is the culmination of students work for the 2013-2014 calendar year.

These students are in either the Film/Video or Animation class. They range from 7^th graders to graduating seniors. Most of these students are visual artists taking this class as an elective.

All proceeds go towards updating and replacing equipment in the video and animation studio. We have a huge turnover of students and have to deal with broken equipment.

Additionally with the constant changes in the industry we also have equipment that just requires updating. Donations of equipment or money are always accepted.

Alvoro Leite and Alex Mangen are the studio directors. Both are graduates of the Wright State University Motion Pictures Production Program and have over 20 years of teaching and actual production experience between them.

Dixie Twin – 1st to Drive-In the Digital Age!

The Dixie Drive-In did it! They purchased not one, but two brand new, state-of-the-art digital movie projectors for their North Dayton drive-in. The overall cost to upgrade from a 35mm film format to a digital format was nearly $200,000. For a seasonal business, it will take years to recoup these costs but the Dixie Twin believes this investment in the community goes far beyond monetary returns. It’s a matter of keeping the American tradition of drive-ins alive.
For Daytonians, there is a strong tradition of going to drive-ins… especially the Dixie. Originally, it was the hot spot for being the first theater in the area to have one of the largest outdoor viewing screens at 120 feet long and 55 feet high. Later, the Dixie became famous for offering 2 outdoor movie screens. With the addition of
a second screen they started treating audiences to 4, first run movie features each evening. Now, with digital conversion, the Dixie Twin has become even more of an industry leader. They are the first and only drive-in theatre in the Dayton area to feature digital 2K Projection. This makes for the ultimate outdoor movie experience.
Why the decision to make such a huge investment? The Dixie Twin received tremendous community support in last year’s “Project Drive-In” promotion sponsored by Honda. This major car company wanted to bring attention to the fact that only about 400 drive-in theaters remain across the entire country. The Dixie is fortunate to be among those few. During Honda’s nationwide promotion to help save drive-ins, the Dixie received tens of thousands of emails, comments, calls and posts in an unprecedented show of support. People shared their fondest childhood memories of fun filled family summer nights spent under the stars at the Dixie. They voiced their nostalgic opinions of wanting their children, and grandchildren, to have the same opportunity they enjoyed. This feedback was a welcomed reminder that the Dixie theater has great value and is one of the few forms of entertainment that entire families of all ages can still enjoy… and enjoy together.

That same element of family tradition is also echoed by the owners of the Dixie. The Levin family has owned many theaters over the years, including the Dixie Twin. Located on North Dixie Drive and just north of the Needmore Road intersection, it was built in 1957 and has served generations for nearly 60-years. The Levin’s believe this theatre is important for the local community and that area neighborhoods continue to have access to quality family entertainment at affordable prices. For the Levin’s, it’s a long-term investment and a true labor of love. As long as they own the Dixie they will be committed to providing needed entertainment and value for anyone within driving distance.
Wanting to provide Daytonians with a movie legacy may be a Levin family tradition – but there’s more to the story than nostalgia. Movie studios have advised drive-in owners like the Levin’s that in the very near future, studios are going totally digital. That means Hollywood will stop sending out any movies on 35mm film reels. To stay in business, theaters must adapt to a modern digital format in order to show movies to their audiences. Conversion is inevitable and the Levin’s decided to be pro-active. By upgrading to digital projection now, the Dixie is guaranteed to provide entertainment for generations to come. Thousands of people can continue their plans of making the Dixie Twin their family-fun destination… all “Drive-In season” long.

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL is starting to fade..but it’s still performing well enough to stick around for another week. That said, this could be its last. Hurry down if you still need to see it (or see it again).

On Friday, we will open the charming, feature debut film from director Ritesh Batra – THE LUNCHBOX. T.T. Stern-Enzi of DAYTON CITY PAPER just gave the film an “A” review. He wrote, “A soulful performance by Irrfan Khan serves as the key ingredient in this marvelous dish.”

BUDAPEST HOTEL, TIM’S VERMEER and Other NEON News

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL continues to hit milestones. In less than 3 weeks, the film is already at #4 on our “Highest Grossing Films” list. (The Top 3 are SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, SIDEWAYS and MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING – each of these films played at least 12 weeks). This is really spectacular, and we truly appreciate your support and positive word-of-mouth.

This week, we are going to hold both current attractions. Though TIM’S VERMEER didn’t have record attendance, it did well enough to stick around. With all the kudos from audience members, we think it’s worth holding for a 2nd week. That said, we plan to move forward with THE LUNCHBOX on April 18. Hurry down if you need to see TIM’S VERMEER. The TAB Entertainment has rented one of our auditoriums this Sunday for a special, one-time screening of MY DREAM BESIDE ME. “MY DREAM BESIDE ME is a romantic dramedy based on the true love story of Paul Rich and Mary Kay Slesinger Rich. At 84 years young Paul lost his wife of 66 years – Mary Kay was married for 34 years and she was left a widow when she was in her mid 60’s. After a few years Paul and Mary Kay met and fell in love. TIM’S VERMEER Opens and GRAND BUDAPEST Holds at THE NEON!

In just under 11 days, THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL became our #7 highest grossing film at THE NEON. All films above it played for a minimum of 6 weeks to reach those kind of numbers. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and support – it has been a wonderful ride so far.

It goes without saying that we will continue our run of BUDAPEST HOTEL. That said, it will now play on just one screen. Starting Friday, we will open a documentary that many of you have been eager to see – TIM’S VERMEER.

Synopsis for TIM’S VERMEER: “Tim Jenison, a Texas based inventor, (Video Toaster, LightWave, TriCaster) attempts to solve one of the greatest mysteries in all art: How did 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer (“Girl with a Pearl Earring”) manage to paint so photo-realistically – 150 years before the invention of photography? FilmDayton Accepting Film Submissions and Award Nominations

Networking and film talk at 2012 Festival

The Eichelberger FilmDayton Festival is growing again! This year’s festival (August 22-24) is now accepting submissions of films for consideration to be screened and nominations for the FilmDayton Awards, a highlight of the annual festival that celebrates locally-connected talent.

Submit a Film to the Festival
In 2014, the festival has announced an open submission process for film selection. In past years, the Dayton-based fest has featured many great award-winning feature films on an invitation-only basis. Opening of the festival for submissions raises the bar as the Miami Valley continues to grow as a film community. Multiple categories allow audiences to enjoy a wide selection of local, national and international films. Categories include:

Feature-Length and Short Films: Open Category – Whether it’s documentary or narrative, comedy or drama, horror or romance – we’re accepting great features (over 45 minutes) and shorts (under 30 minutes). Filmmakers from across the globe are encouraged to submit.
Ohio Shorts and Ohio Features – FilmDayton is Ohio Proud! We’re ready to show off our regional talent with special categories that celebrate local work. We accept all genres including narrative, documentary, horror, animation and more. Anything goes – if it’s good and it’s got a significant Ohio connection – it could get seen at the FilmDayton Festival.
ReInvention Shorts – In partnership with the team from WYSO 93.1FM that created the local ReInvention Stories – we are welcoming short films that highlight how people and communities from around the globe are reinventing themselves through the recent times of economic uncertainty.
Flick My Clip – FilmDayton welcomes comic Ryan Singer back with his popular Flick My Clip comedy shorts. This special screening is juried by Singer and features comedy shorts less than five minutes. Sometimes reserved, sometimes raunchy, rolling laughter is the goal.

FilmDayton Executive Director Megan Cooper says of the new festival format, “We’re so pleased to take this leap forward in welcoming both features and shorts as part of the festival. The audience has been asking for this experience and with the support of the Eichelberger Foundation, we are able to deliver a great, high-quality festival experience.”

The FilmDayton Awards
As part of the festival weekend, FilmDayton honors filmmakers and supporters of the film community. The organization is currently accepting nominations for the third annual FilmDayton Awards which will be presented in up to three categories at the FilmDayton Festival:

The Filmmaker Award recognizes a career of excellence in filmmaking.
The Key Award for special service to the regional film community.
The Innovation Award recognizes emerging/innovative artists in film.

FilmDayton Board President Nicole Richter explains that a filmmaker needn’t be an Academy-Award nominated filmmaker or someone with a huge body of professional work. “Any working filmmaker in the Dayton Region can be nominated for these awards. Nominees don’t have to be well-known filmmakers. Part of the motivation for the awards stemmed from FilmDayton’s desire to celebrate those hard-working filmmakers whose dedication and service to their craft may not be widely recognized.”

The Festival Overview
The sixth annual festival continues to feature local talent while welcoming filmmakers from across the state, region, and even the world. The 2014 Eichelberger FilmDayton Festival will be a destination to enjoy great films, workshops, networking, and parties. Cooper says, “After establishing a following as a festival with high standards, savvy audiences, quality films, interesting panels, and great hospitality to filmmakers, this is an important next step. By opening up the festival for film submissions, we audiences meet up-and-coming filmmakers and enjoy their work. It’s a big step forward for film in our region, and we’re excited to bring this to local audiences.”

The festival will be the weekend of August 22-24, 2014 with the majority of the screenings at The Neon in downtown Dayton. In addition to feature-length and short films, the festival also includes panel discussions, Q&As, a Pitch-It competition, and social/networking opportunities.

GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL Opens Exclusively at THE NEON

We’re very excited about this weekend. Wes Anderson’s new film has been breaking box office records across the country, and now THE NEON gets to have the local exclusive opening of THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. Many people in the Miami Valley have been eagerly anticipating this movie (including almost everyone at THE NEON), and we’re looking forward to our “Wes Anderson Fan Screening” on Thursday night at 8:00. (Regular ticket prices apply, and tickets are still available…with several fun prizes in store.) If you can’t make it Thursday, never fear…we’re dedicating both screens to this film for its first week.

14th Annual Dayton Jewish Film Festival Opens April 24

The Dayton Jewish Film Festival opens at the Neon on Thursday, April 24, at 6:45PM. The festival (running from April 24 through May 18) will bring the best in Jewish and Israeli cinema to the Dayton area, including an international selection of both feature films and documentaries. Festival venues include The Neon Movies in downtown Dayton and The Little Art Theatre in Yellow Springs.

OK. I’ll admit it. I’m biased. I simply adore Elaine Stritch. I’ve seen her perform twice (her cabaret act at The Carlyle and in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC on Broadway), and I can’t wait to see the new documentary which opens Friday (March 14) at THE NEON. That said, we’re not bringing the film just because I love her. ELAINE STRITCH: SHOOT ME is currently rated “100% Fresh” on rottentomatoes.com. That score almost never happens!

And The Oscar Goes To…

It’s time to find out which films and artists will reap Oscar gold according to the over 6,000 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who determined nominees for the 86th annual Academy Awards. American Hustle and Gravity tie with 10 nods, but 12 Years a Slave follows with nine. Additionally, local filmmaker Julia Reichert, an Emmy winner and three-time Oscar nominee, served as associate producer of Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall, nominated in the documentary short subject field.
Anything is possible when winners will be revealed tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Here are my predictions in the top six categories.

By and large, it’s a three-way race between Gravity, Hustle and Slave. Hustle, David O. Russell’s clever, entertaining 1970s throwback, had momentum in January during the height of awards season, but passion seems to have cooled. Gravity captivated with stunning visuals and special effects recalling Stanley Kubrick’s iconic 2001: A Space Odyssey, but its screenplay wasn’t nominated, tainting its overall impact. Slave is overtly chilling and tough to watch, but it’s also the most emotional, profound and significant when categorizing the kind of prestige film that typically grabs this coveted honor. In a close call, Slave feels on the verge of making Oscar history as the first best picture winner to chronicle the African-American experience.

Still, Leto, nearly unrecognizable, seems a sure bet for his gentle, striking portrayal of Rayon, a transgender woman living with AIDS.

On Thursday, March 6 at 7:30, the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National MS Society will host a screening of WHEN I WALK. “In 2006, 25-year-old Jason DaSilva was on vacation at the beach with family when, suddenly, he fell down. He couldn’t get back up. His legs had stopped working; his disease could no longer be ignored. Just a few months earlier doctors had told him that he had multiple sclerosis…Jason tried exercise to help cope, but the problem only worsened. After his dispiriting fall on the beach, he turned to his Mom, who reminded him that, despite his disease, he was still a fortunate kid who had the opportunity to pursue the things he loved most: art and filmmaking. We’re ready for you this Sunday! THE NEON’s Annual Oscar Party has been a success for more than a decade, and we’re excited that ThinkTV has once again agreed to help us get a signal for the broadcast. On Sunday, March 2, seating will begin as close to 7pm as possible (which is when the pre-show begins). Ballots for guessing the winners are now available in our lobby…and must be turned in before the first award is given (guests must be present during our party to be eligible for prizes). As movie makers celebrate their biggest night, FilmDayton will join the Academy Awards action by hosting “An Evening with Oscar” March 2 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 3520 Pentagon Park Blvd., in Beavercreek.

As the nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the Dayton region’s film community, FilmDayton will welcome guests to watch the broadcast on multiple screens, mingle with friends, film lovers and area filmmakers while also enjoying savory treats created by local chefs. The Academy Awards are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., and the party’s doors open at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the “An Evening with Oscar” party are $25 ($20 for FilmDayton members). A package of six tickets is $125. Tickets are available at filmdayton.ticketleap.com. But through Dayton Most Metro, you have a chance to win tickets below!

Haunted House On Sorority Row Looks To Recruit New Horror Pledges

Local filmmaker Henrique Couto has just had his first experience into the huge fundraising website Kickstarter wrap up. He shows signs of exhaustion and fatigue. Almost as if he personally executed his campaign like a Jerry Lewis televised marathon on the local television channel. He quickly perks up, though. It truly is amazing. Immediately, his attitude changes and it’s as if he suddenly took some miracle pill that completely wiped out any tiredness that was rummaging around him.

This isn’t the first time Couto went to trying out crowd funding. He first tried indiegogo.com to help get his first family film, A Bulldog For Christmas, up and rolling back in March of last year. The movie centered on a cynical college student that was on Christmas vacation and then was transformed into a bulldog. The college student needed to learn the true meaning of the holiday spirit, along with what being part of a loving family entails in order to become her normal self again. Couto wanted to make the goal he set of $1600, which would help feed the cast during production, hire composer Buzz Amato to do the music score of the film, and help with the manufacturing with the DVD and Blu Ray copies of the film. Couto was able to raise over $2400.

With the success of the first one in the books, Couto looked to Kickstarter to go and help get his one of his newest projects he currently is working on, the dark comedy Awkward Thanksgiving. Like A Bulldog For Christmas, Couto wanted to do the same things with Awkward Thanksgiving with the post production, music, and treating his actors to a great meal or two. Unlike Indiegogo, Couto knew that with Kickstarter you make your goal or you get nothing at all. The goal was set a little higher-$2400. Within the first 24 hours, the goal was made. At the end of the drive, the movie raised over $6000.

Couto continues to deliver micro-budgeted films that captivate his audiences all around the world. With his first voyage in comedy Depression: The Movie, to A Bulldog For Christmas hopefully being released nationwide later this year, and coming soon Awkward Thanksgiving, it’s clear to see the Couto continues to dive into the realm of different genres. For most that know better, the true passion that this director has when it comes to his work is producing horror and suspenseful films. Friday night, Couto will be releasing his newest film, Haunted House on Sorority Row at Englewood Cinemas.

Haunted House on Sorority Row centers around a group of young college girls who have become disenchanted with the other sororities on campus. The leader of the group has located a house that is a little outside of town. When the girls are checking out the house, they learn that there has been some talk that it’s haunted. The girls brush it off, and purchased the house. After doing some repairs and refurbishing of the home, the fledgling sorority is ready to get some new recruits in to be with the first four girls. As soon as they unpack and start to get situated, some dark and disturbing incidents start to occur. The screenplay writer, John Oak Dalton, along with Couto take these young girls through psychological horror as they try to find out what’s truly the reasoning for what is happening between the four walls. “It really is about you have to face your fear if you want to move on”, explains Couto. “Otherwise, it will kill you.”

The movie was shot in Waynesville, Ohio in a house that actually belongs to a member of the production’s family. Owned by at least eight individuals in the family, the house is primary used for storage and for family gatherings. “We didn’t know that it had a basement”, Couto says. “It turns out that it had a root cellar with a basement…and it’s terrifying. To walk down into, it’s scary. So, we have some good scenes down there.” The filming didn’t take long, only taking two weekends. With the work on Haunted House on Sorority Row, Couto decided to throw out his normal ways of recording and really let loose. He experimented with different camera angels, different lightning, and even tinkered around with fog. What viewers should expect is a movie that is terrifying, and will make sit at the edge of your seat. “I’ve been making horror movies on and off for a long time, and I think that this is the scariest thing I’ve made”, proclaims Couto. “The combination of experience and the playground that I had to work with, I was able to make a scarier movie. Its visually scary. I feel like once you are in that house, you aren’t getting out.” When you hear Couto discuss Haunted House on Sorority Row, you see and hear how excited he is about this film. “The movie has so much set pieces, special effects, makeup…it’s hugely ambitious”, declares Couto.

After making Haunted House on Sorority Row, Couto mentioned that he wants to make another film that involves ghosts. “I enjoyed the experimenting”, explained Couto.

What Couto doesn’t realize-he is always experimenting.

The world premiere of Haunted House On Sorority Row will be shown at Englewood Cinemas on Friday night, February 21. 10pm showing. $8 admission.

Little Art Theatre Brings London’s National Theatre Live to the Miami Valley

The Little Art Theatre, which completed a half-million dollar renovation in 2013, will present productions from London’s National Theatre beginning this month. National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking project that broadcasts the best of British theatre from the London stage to cinemas around the world. Each broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theatre, with cameras positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure that cinema audiences get the “best seat in the house” view of each production.

Shakespeare’s Coriolanus will open the series, with screenings on Saturday, February 22, at 2 p.m. and Wednesday, February 26, at 7 p.m. The hit production War Horse will be shown on March 22 and 26, followed by King Lear on May 24 and 28 and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time on May 31 and June 4.

Coriolanus, Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge, stars Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers, War Horse, Thor) in the title role and Mark Gatiss (BBC’s Sherlock) as Menenius. Variety offered this praise: “Making enthralling theater out of one of Shakespeare’s best-known titles is one thing. It’s an achievement of an altogether higher order to take the austerely forbidding ‘Coriolanus’—an argumentative tragedy discussing the demands of politics and the power of the people—and turn it into a theatrical triumph. But that’s exactly what [director] Josie Rourke has done. Thanks to an ideally dovetailed ensemble led by a scorching Tom Hiddleston, tension builds, fills the theater and never flags throughout an all-consuming evening.” Coriolanus has a running time of 180 minutes.
