Eco-Minded Gather for Green Drinks

Green Drinks is an informal networking event where environmentally minded people meet over drinks. The first chapter began in London in 1989 according to wikipedia and there are now over 582 Green Drinks chapters worldwide. While most people attending are people working on environmental issues, anyone can come — people from environment groups, business, government, academia and as individuals. Each meeting has a featured speaker and appetizers sponsored by a different business each month.

hosted by the Dayton Regional Green Task Force.

…by this point, we’re fairly certain most of you are aware of the pending arrival of one Dave Doughman to the Gem City next Thursday, October 29 for a single performance of Swearing at Motorists at Canal Street Tavern. Along with original drummer Don Thrasher, S@M will perform, in its entirety, the acclaimed 2000 album, Number Seven Uptown. We recently spoke with Doughman about his hiatus, the pending show, and what it all means…

The Buddha Den: It’s been quite a while since we’ve heard anything from Swearing at Motorists. What has kept you silent for the past three years? What drove you out of the US? Do you miss us?

Dave Doughman: well, i’d say Swearing At Motorists kept quiet, but not exactly silent…
there were a couple of tracks on compilations, a few shows in Berlin, but yeah nothing major has happened in the “World of ‘Motorists” since the release of “Last Night Becomes This Morning” and “Exile On Gipsstraße” in 2006.

December 7, 2004, in the middle of a European tour, i fell in love with Berlin. During our set, i asked from the stage if anyone knew of empty flat or room for rent… after the show i ended up with a decent list of names and addresses! so i went to my favorite Berlin after-show drinking spot, 8mm, and asked the bartender which of the addresses was closest to the bar…
the next day i went to that address and gave the landlord a deposit.
finished the tour, went back to Philly to tidy some loose ends, and moved into my flat at Gipsstraße 23 on February 02, 2005.
i needed a change.
of scenery,
of lifestyle,
i needed a new muse(geographically speaking of course, not romantic… )
and to concentrate on just making music…

but in January 2007, my son was born,
my new focus was on being a great father,
i found caring for and playing with my son more enjoyable than creating new music…

now he is almost 3, and in the last year has shown a real interest in music, so i started writing again,
first with him, just for laughs,
then more seriously on my own when he is asleep…

TBD: With all this down time, what projects have kept you busy? Anything new in the works? A new album perhaps?

DD: lately i have been recording demos for a new album, i’ve trimmed my list to about 22 songs. i think a sequence of 14-16 of those will make a great album. hopefully we can finish the proper recording before winter is over…

TBD: After a 3-year absence, it seems peculiar that you would return to Dayton for a one-off show. On a Thursday, no less. Care to elaborate on the motivation behind such a bizarre phenomenon?

DD: the truth is,
i realized my license was about to expire and since i needed to fly from Berlin to Chicago for work Oct 30, i thought i would fly to Dayton a day early, renew my license, then drive to Chicago. so i was looking online, to see what i could do on my one night in Dayton, and noticed, there was nothing i wanted to do, no bands were playing that i wanted to see. so i decided it would be cool to book a show and invite a band i really wanted to see to play with me…

i am really excited about the show, not only because it’s been 3 years since i’ve played in North America,
but because we are going to do something we have never done before.
the idea to play Number Seven Uptown in sequence came from being a fan of the All Tomorrow’s Parties “Don’t Look Back Concerts” , where ATP commission artists to perform their “critically acclaimed” or “classic” albums live in sequence…
i was joking with a friend that the 10 year anniversary of Number Seven Uptown was next year,
so i’d better start rehearsing it in sequence,
you know, just in case ATP wanted us to play it as a Don’t Look Back Concert…
and then i thought, hey why not do this in Dayton?
to make it different than just playing Canal Street Tavern again…

so we will play the album, ATP style as i like to call it,
then if people want, we will play some more songs.

i think it’s going to be a great night in Dayton,
a bunch of old friends getting together for some good music.
it’s going to be a Dayton Rock-n-Roll Family Reunion, ‘Motorists’ style!
i mean cmon, Jay Madewell spinning Fab Gear before between and after!?!
DANCE PARTY!
i’m pretty excited to see Smug Brothers play,
as i am a big fan of the Fortune Rumors Ep series…
and of course anyone too cool to show up early and see the Rev. Davis Kettering open the show at 9pm,
will be missing out on a performance i guarantee will be talked about for ages…
oh, for those of you who will be there, you should be quiet, as he is prone to violence against talking audience members…

TBD: What inspires you to continue to create these days? What keeps you motivated? What is your current working method like, now that you’re essentially on your own? Still home recording?

DD: i can’t help myself… i hear this stuff in my head, and i just try to get it to come out of the speakers… i’m very lucky to be on such a great label as Secretly Canadian, but if i wasn’t, i would still be making songs and records, burning cdrs for my friends. i mean this whole “band” started as a cassette i made for a friend… and my son motivates me, because i want him to respect me as an artist, to realize when he is older, that making music is not what i do, it’s who i am. and he has changed my “working habits”…
now i can’t stay up all night drinking red wine and smoking,
waking up the next afternoon in bed next to a guitar and a notebook full of words…
i can’t just wait until inspiration hits…
so i spend a few hours each morning Mon-Fri in my home studio,
trying to write, or at least play guitar, while he is at preschool…

TBD: Having put down roots [at least tentatively] in a number of locations, what keeps you tied to Dayton? What essence do you feel Dayton possesses that keeps those that leave calling it home?

DD: Dayton is where i began making music, it’s where the 2nd phase of my musical education took place. long before i lived here, when i would visit my mother, i would buy records at Trader Vic’s. Mike Justice is responsible for getting me hooked on all the local Dayton bands.
He’s the one who insisted i buy Brainiac’s Smack Bunny Baby Lp, instead of some Pavement import 7″…
i moved to Dayton at an important time musically, and was very fortunate to end up in a supportive circle of friends that made some pretty amazing music. and lucky that some people were interested in hearing my bedroom recordings…

TBD: Will it ever be as good as it was? Was it ever that good? Is now better than what some would say?

DD: it can be as good or even better for someone else, for someone who wasn’t there maybe…

Dayton-born Writer Natalie Barney Recognized

On Sun, Oct 25th the newest Ohio Historical marker will be dedicated in Cooper Park, adjacent to the Metro Public Library. The marker commemorates Dayton-born writer Natalie Clifford Barney.

images-7 A noted writer, Natalie was born October 31, 1876 in Dayton, OH. From the age of 12, Natalie Barney knew that she was a lesbian and she was raised to appreciate the arts. By the age of 20, she had moved to Paris and published the first of her renowned feminist books. In the early 20th Century, when women writers were ignored and dismissed, Natalie Barney created and anchored a formidable leadership role in literary circles. She established her own literary salon which included women, and it quickly drew the leading western writers to her Paris home. For more than 50 years, prominent writers joined her literary circle each week, run according to her rules. Ms. Barney died in Paris on February 2, 1972.

The Ohio Historical Marker program, administered by the Ohio Historical Society since 1957, enables Ohioans to commemorate and celebrate local history as well as to learn more about the state. Designed to be permanent and highly visible, the markers are cast-aluminum signs that tell stories about all aspects of Ohio history.

To date, there are more than 1,300 markers statewide. Immediately follow the dedication ceremony, a presentation of Natalie Barney’s life and works will be held in the Library’s auditorium, Salon Style by Leon Bey. The presentation will include dramatic readings from Ms. Barney’s works, her epigrams and poetry. Refreshments are planned after the program, reminiscent of the food served in the Barney Salons held in her Paris home.

The public is invited to enjoy this presentation on the life of this Dayton-born literary giant and sample the recipes used in her famous Salons.

Here’s A Club I’d Join – Chappys Beer Club

Time for this week’s installment of Things To Do In Dayton from our DMM Event Calendar…

First up, Thursday 10/22 you all have another chance to check out the Creative Soul of Dayton Reception at the Armory (Oregon District) – lots of diverse local art to see for free!

On Friday 10/23 if you’re a horror movie buff then you’re in luck because the Englewood Cinema is hosting Horrorama Dayton. Continuing with the Halloween theme, the SMAG Dance Collective introduces SMAGMARE – a Halloween ballet at the Excelsior Building in the OD (also happening on Saturday). Like Latin Jazz-Funk? Then head over to Pacchia for Clave Sonic.

More Halloween fun Saturday 10/24 with Bow Wow Ween at The Greene (family-friendly). For you beer lovers, check out the Miami Valley Beer Fest at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds (with Masquerage there last week, is this turning into party central?). And for local music lovers check out New Vega, The Professors, The Satin Peaches at Canal Street Tavern (well, The Satin Peaches are from Detroit but whatever).

And yet more family-friendly Halloween action on Sunday 10/25 with Young’s Dairy Pick your own pumpkin and Cowvin’s Corny Maze. All You Can Eat Chocolate Party

As part of their 25th anniversary celebration Bellbrook Chocolate Shoppe at Cross Pointe Centre in Centerville will host an “All You Can Eat Chocolate Party” on Sunday, Oct. 25th from 4-6pm, in the store’s kitchen, to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness. Enjoy all of the 95 varieties of chocolate made at the shop. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the Shoppe or by calling (937) 436-5066. I’ll be the one there with my mouth full! 🙂

Owner Betty Blose attributes the popularity of her chocolates to the fact that they are handmade with her “signature” blend of milk and dark chocolate to create varieties that include creams, truffles, enrobed and molded items. It’s the only blend sold at the family’s Centerville store, and they use this rich chocolate to create everything from chocolate heart-shaped boxes filled with strawberries dipped in chocolate and cakes made of layers of shortbread cookies, iced with chocolate, to their Bellbrook pretzel, a pretzel rod dipped in caramel, rolled in toffee pieces and finally dipped in chocolate.

Chocolate is one of the most popular sweet-tasting treats in the world and has been for centuries. But part of the myth surrounding chocolate is that if it tastes so good, it must be bad for your health.

But the surprising news from the scientific community is that this reputedly decadent treat actually has some health benefits:

* Cacao, the source of chocolate, contains antibacterial agents that fight tooth decay. Of course, this is counteracted by the high sugar content of milk chocolate.
* The smell of chocolate may increase theta brain waves, resulting in relaxation.
* Chocolate contains phenyl ethylamine, a mild mood elevator.
* The cocoa butter in chocolate contains oleic acid, a mono-unsaturated fat which may raise good cholesterol.
* Drinking a cup of hot chocolate before meals may actually diminish appetite.
* Men who eat chocolate live a year longer than those who don’t.
* The flavanoids in chocolate may help keep blood vessels elastic.
* Chocolate increases antioxidant levels in the blood.
* Mexican healers use chocolate to treat bronchitis and insect bites.
* The carbohydrates in chocolate raise serotonin levels in the brain, resulting in a sense of well-being.

New Beer Fest debuts Saturday

Miami Valley Beer Fest is a true craft beer tasting, featuring an incredible variety of beers from some of the finest craft brewers in the country. Organizer Mike Schwartz, has long been know to beer afficionados and home brewers all over the region, as he and his wife Donna operate Belmont Party Supply. Mike is excited to finally present an amazing selection of over 100 craft beers for a tasting this Saturday, Oct 24th. From 2-6pm attendees will be encouraged to sample this hand picked selection of beers at the Roundhouse at the Miami Valley Fairgrounds on Main Street across from Miami Valley Hospital.

For a flat fee of $35 guests will get 20 samples and looking over the list of Stout’s, Porter’s and Pale Ale’s, there will be plenty of rare beers unknown to the masses. Proceeds will benefit RHA, a nonprofit agency that provides residential services and supports for people with developmental disabilities in Montgomery County.

Your chance to see Last Truck documentary for FREE

Last Truck Dayton Shows For months local filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar filmed, interviewed and lived the last days of the Moraine Assembly Plant to create an emotionally raw and poignant look at the employees on their final weeks at work. In August HBO came to Dayton to debut the documentary to a full house of GM employees at the Schuster Center. Then on Labor Day the story played nationwide on HBO.

Now HBO has gone even further to celebrate the town that provided the story for The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant. On Saturday Oct 24 there will be three screenings at the Neon Movies and Little Art Theater. HBO has generously rented the theaters so the shows can be free and open to the public.

Some of the former GM workers featured in the film will be at each screening for Q & A afterwards.

Just last week The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the field of Documentary Short Subject contenders for the 82nd Academy Awards has been narrowed to eight films, of which three to five will earn Oscar nominations and Last Truck has made that list.

Horrorama is Friday – Get the Inside Scoop from the Organizers and Dr. Creep on WYSO

It’s been over 20 years since Shock Theatre graced the TV sets of Dayton residents, but as Halloween approaches the Miami Valley, you can still catch Dr. Creep at many area events. One event that’s been a become a seasonal tradition for fans of scary movies is Horrorama, a charity horror film marathon that’s been in the area since 1997. Dr. Creep will be on hand to host this year’s festivities this Friday, October 23 starting at 7pm at the Englewood Theater.

Dr. Creep and two of the organizers of Horrorama will be guests on WYSO’s Kaleidoscope this Wednesday night, October 21 around 9pm. Tune into WYSO at 91.3Fm or listen online at wyso.org.

Good Neighbor House provides support

Do you know anyone needing help paying for expensive prescription drug costs?

Help is on the way courtesy of the “Help Is Here Express” bus tour. The Partnership for Prescription Assistance launched the “Help Is Here Express” bus tour in an effort to reach the millions of Americans who qualify for public and private prescription assistance programs.

The buses, or “rolling information centers” are equipped with computers and telephones that allow trained specialists to identify if a patient qualifies for a program. Many patients get their medicines free or at a substantially reduced cost.

The bus tour rolls into Dayton on Oct. 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Good Neighbor House located at 844 S. Patterson Blvd.

Good Neighbor House provides support such as food pantry services, clothing, household, and furniture items to families throughout the Miami Valley. They also provide a network of no or low-cost medical services to uninsured workers.

Volunteer commitments range from working once a week to once a month.

Local group proposes I-75/I-70 monument

New York City, Paris, St. Louis – What do these cities have in common?

An identifiable icon in the form of the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower and the Gateway Arch, respectively.

The Wright Image Group wants to add Dayton and the Wright Flyer III to that list. The local, nonprofit group is garnering support to install a Wright Flyer III monument at the intersection of I-70 and I-75. Weighing over 80,000 pounds and rising 220 feet high, the structure would commemorate the Wright Brothers’ aeronautical accomplishments, while giving Dayton an easily identifiable icon that would be seen by over 150,000 passengers daily.

The State of Ohio and Singer Properties donated 2 acres of land for the project, which is projected to cost approximately $7.5 million, according to the Dayton Daily News.

To help rally support, The Wright Image Group will be hosting an open house and information session on Oct. 25 from 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. at the Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport on Route 741 in Miamisburg. Event attendees will be able to climb into the pilot seat of a Wright “B” Flyer and have a photo taken free of charge. Following food, drink and fellowship, the group will present its goals for the monument and answer questions from the general public concerning the project.

New Burger joint across from Dayton Mall

Smashburger opens today in The Shoppes at 725. In recognition of local flavor, Smashburger will offer a Buckeye Smashburger designed especially for the Ohio market. One dollar from each Buckeye Smashburger sold through Friday, Oct 23rd will be donated to the Thank You Foundation of Dayton. This group strives to improve the overall quality of life of Veterans, Military Personnel, and their families by focusing and supporting efforts for Education & Employment, Health & Welfare, and Morale & Recreation for the community we serve.

Named for the cooking method used to create the perfect burger, Smashburgers are either a one-third or half-pound ball of 100 percent fresh-not frozen-Angus beef smashed on a flat grill to sear in superior juicy flavor. To further the ‘better burger’ experience, Smashburgers are served on a toasted artisan bun and topped with a selection of real cheeses, the freshest produce, and distinctive toppings including haystack onions, guacamole or even a fried egg.

Things To Do In Dayton (10/16 – 10/18)

Time for this week’s installment of Things To Do In Dayton from our DMM Event Calendar…

On Friday 10/16 for all those people who rode their bikes to work downtown on this nice & warm October day(there are hundreds of you, right?), head over to the Second Street Market at noon for Five Rivers MetroParks “Bike To The Polls!” ride and vote Yes on the MetroParks levy (as well as the Dayton Public Library levy). Later, check out the closing reception at Space 11 in the OD for Alinement. If you’re in Yellow Springs then you’re in luck because today is 3rd Friday Fling in the Springs – their version of First Friday with art gallery hops, shopping, music and more. Finally, help out the Miami Valley Firefighters/EMS Memorial Fund AND have a good time at Newcom’s Tavern in the OD as they’re having a Jonathan Dayton Birthday Bash. (oh sure, he never actually came to the city named after him while he was alive but now that he’s dead….)

Don’t stay out too late on Friday because you have to get up early on Saturday 10/17 for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Fifth Third Field. For some Halloween fun check out Haunted Huffman and their walking ghost tour, haunted house and more. And then the party of all parties and one not to be missed – Masquerage! And don’t forget your mask!

Brunch is about to get better!

images-25 As of this Sunday, restaurants with Sunday sales permits will be able to sell wine and spirits two hours earlier under a new state law that takes effect this weekend.

The law, which was built into the state budget, allows restaurants with D-6 liquor permits to begin Sunday sales at 11 a.m. instead of the current 1 p.m. So now your french toast can be complimented with the classic brunch Mimosa, made with fresh O.J. and champagne.

Such a simple idea – gather a group of women committed to caring about their community by combining their donations so they can make an impact and effect change in the lives of those in need in the Dayton area.

Such a major impact – over $145,000 has been raised in just 10 hours!

Member Ann Roberts summed it up on her blog:
We All Give What We Can
Sometimes it is $25, $50, $100 or more. We donate our money, time, and services in order to make a difference in our community and in the lives of others. Sometimes I would wonder whether my small contribution was really making a difference. I’ve found a way to make MY $100 be the difference.

Consider this… The Dayton Boys and Girls Club (DBGC) has a room of 16 computers that don’t work consistently if at all. The kids may or may not be able to use them for their homework. These are kids without access to a computer at home. In addition, these kids parents have very limited computer skills and limited access to computers; in today’s technologically savvy market that means that you can’t even apply for a job at Kroger’s without access to a computer. Replacing the computer equipment is beyond the capability of the existing operational funding. Enter 100+ Women Who Care. Because of 100+ Women Who Care, the DBGC was able to acquire brand new computers for the club. The kids at the club have been developing their computer skills and using the computers to help with their homework and the reports they need to write. Their parents are also benefiting! Because DBGC has new computers, they received a grant from Microsoft for additional software. Because of the new computers, they have been able to develop programs such as a summer program that will tie the kids in with the Columbus Zoo.

How did my $100 make a difference? If I had just donated $100 to the Dayton Boys and Girls Club it wouldn’t have had the same dramatic impact. 100+ Women Who Care currently exists in only four (4) cities and Dayton OH is one of them! (Other chapters include Jackson, MI; Dupage County, IL; and Albion, MI.)

Here’s how 100+ Women Who Care Works:

•Fundraising accomplished in one hour

•Each member donates $100 per meeting ($400 per year)

•The donations will be given to charities/worthy causes serving locally in the Dayton area. No national programs will be considered. The purpose is for 100% of the contributions to stay in the community.

•Any member may put a suggestion she has researched in the drawing at each meeting.

•Three suggestions are drawn at each meeting, five-minute presentations are given by those members. The membership votes and majority rules, a $100 check is written by each member to the charity selected — and 100% goes to the selected charity or worthy cause. Even if a member’s first choice isn’t selected, each member is committed to donating at each meeting.

•The lives of those in need in the Dayton area are impacted with positive, powerful changes…with a potential donation of $19,500(+) four times a year raised in one hour!
