Toronto Film Fest – Day #7

I’m Back!

Wow…though my eyes are starting to blur a bit and my feet are slightly dragging, I’m still makin’ it to all the screenings I’ve got on the docket.

First of the day was Terrence Malick’s TO THE WONDER.  You might remember that THE TREE OF LIFE earned the title of most walk-outs in NEON history…and I think this film might give TREE OF LIFE a run for its money.  This visually lovely and poetic film is quite experimental…and it not only feels like a follow-up to TOL, it feels repetitive.  With identical shots from TOL, some similar “plot” lines and similar tone, this film will have both fans and detractors.  I heard one woman late this afternoon say to her friend, “I saw TO THE WONDER this morning.  It’s the worst movie I’ve EVER seen.”  The film is a rumination on relationships.  It has some wonderful moments, but I ultimately found the film to be tedious.  If I had to watch Olga Kurylenko skip through one more wheat field or twirl around down one more grocery store aisle, I might have to end it all (see below).  Ben Affleck seemed to phone in his performance (or perhaps he just wasn’t given much to do), and Rachel McAdams is certainly not the lead of this film (regardless of the marketing you might see).

Next I saw STILL – a Canadian film directed by Michael McGowen…starring James Cromwell and Genevieve Bojuld (Bojuld made a surprise appearance during the introduction of the film – it was a delight to see her).  This film is about how an elderly man is building an accessible home on his land for himself and his wife…and how the authorities keep handing him building violations.  The reason the man is building the house is because of the deteriorating health of his wife.  The director talked about how he read about this story from the headlines…and how he worked directly with the family in order to bring the film to life.  It’s a lovely, quiet film with great performances, a great score, and a wonderful backdrop of the Canadian landscape.

PEACHES DOES HERSELF was next on the list.  This film is the a record of a performance done by the rock star/performance artist Peaches.  Originally from Toronto, Peaches has been a part of the Berlin art scene for years.  This transexually charged performance had its highs and lows with some moments that had me (as well as a few folks beside me) in fits of hysterical laughter (some of it was like a train wreck), but it wouldn’t work well at all in a traditional engagement.  That said, it might find an audience at midnight screenings – especially for fans of the Peaches catalog.

My last screening of the night was SUICIDE SHOP – a life-affirming, French, animated, musical film about suicide.  Huh?  It’s true.  This sweet and funny film was directed by Patrice LeConte (RIDICULE and GIRL ON A BRIDGE), and it’s about a shop that sells anything needed to end one’s life.  Due to the recession, sales are up, and the gloomy family are happy to help folks find their preferred method of exiting the world.  The arrival of a new son throws the shop into a tailspin.  Why?  Because he’s too darn jovial.  Though I saw the film in 3D, it’s absolutely not necessary.  Unfortunately, I thought the film lost a little steam in the second and third act (and it’s only 80 minutes).  In addition, I don’t know who the film is for.  It’s full of adult themes, but the narrative arc is rather slight.  That said, I’m still glad I saw it…some of it is wonderful.

Tomorrow I’ll see 2 or 3 films…and then I’m going to a non-TIFF-related event.  I’ll see Madonna in concert, and I have a great seat.

Cityfolk presents the Prince Edward Island trio Vishten

Twin sisters Pastelle and Emmanuelle LeBlanc formed Vishten a decade ago to play the traditional French Canadian tunes and songs of Prince Edward Island (PEI), a Canadian maritime province consisting of the main island and 231 minor islands. The smallest of the Canadian provinces, Prince Edward Island is home to some 140,000 people and is located north of Nova Scotia and west of Cape Breton Island, with which PEI shares many musical traditions, especially those of Scottish and Irish fiddling and French song.

Emmanuelle (bodhrán, piano, whistles, dance and vocals) and Pastelle LeBlanc (accordion, piano, dance and vocals) grew up in a musical family and a house filled with fiddle music and dancing. The sisters started step dancing at a young age and soon began playing piano. They grew up listening to the fiddlers and accompanying musicians of their parents’ generation, soaking up tunes from such respected local fiddlers as Louise Arsenault and Bertrand Deraspe, from the nearby Magdalen Islands.

The third member of Vishten, Pascal Miousse (fiddle, mandolin, guitar and vocals), grew up on the Magdelen Islands, a small archipelago located southwest of Prince Edward Island and part of the province of Quebec. Miousse also grew up in a very musical environment and began playing the fiddle at age five, eventually adding guitar, bass, mandolin and other instruments. He played traditional fiddle music during his teens, but spent the decade of his twenties touring eastern Canada with a rock band. He met the LeBlanc sisters at a festival in 2002 and quickly returned to his roots by joining Vishten.

Vishten has recorded four accomplished and acclaimed albums since making its debut in 2004: Vishten (2004), 11:11(2007), Live (2008) and Mosaik (2012). In its review of Live, Dirty Linen lavished praise on the trio, hailing the music as “a lively, upbeat dance-hall fusion sound that’s frequently punctuated by foot percussion and step dancing…The material is a mix of traditional and group compositions, the playing is perfect, and the energy level is high.”

Vishten, which last visited Dayton for the 2010 Cityfolk Festival, has performed at countless music festivals in Canada, the U.S., Scotland, France and elsewhere, captivating international audiences and earning such critical raves as “a near perfect ensemble” (La Petit Douchynois, France) with its unique mix of vocals sung in French, traditional fiddle and accordion tunes, driving foot percussion and multi-instrumental flexibility. Vishten has won many musical honors and awards, including several East Coast Music Awards in Canada.

Macbeth begins his bloody rise to power, including the murder of the Scottish king, Duncan, and the guilt-ridden pathology of evil deeds generating still more evil deeds. Eventually, his friends and allies become aware of the evil breaking into his soul and fight to stop him.

His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall.

He interrogates each family member and reveals that each has been responsible for the young woman’s exploitation, abandonment and social ruin, effectively leading to her death.

FAREWELL MY QUEEN at THE NEON + TIFF News

Hello Everyone,

The Toronto International Film Festival has been terrific. I’m heading into my seventh day of screenings, and I’ve already seen 21 films. Though a nightly allotment of 4 to 5 hours of sleep is starting to wear me down, I’m having a great time. I’ve met Francois Ozon and Sally Potter (2 directors I greatly admire), and I’ve attended screenings the were introduced by (and sometimes with Q&As by) Susanne Bier, Keira Knightley, Susan Sarandon, Ben Wishaw, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Kristin Scott Thomas, and my absolute favorite star encounter – Maggie Smith. If you’re interested to know about the movies I’ve seen, check out my other blog postings on this site.  I’ll post some personal pictures upon my return to Dayton.

At THE NEON, we’re moving forward this week. If you still need to see THE INTOUCHABLES, Thursday will be your last chance. On Friday, we will open the period drama FAREWELL, MY QUEEN. Jonathan Lisecki, director of GAYBY, will attend our festival. Jazz Spotlight: Ron Jones + Upcoming Local Jazz Sept 12-25

Coming Up in Local Jazz – September 12 through September 25

Happy September 12th; the  jazz saxophonist Scott Hamilton was born on this day in 1954.

Who is Ron Jones?

Ron Jones, leader of the Ron Jones Quartet, graduated Cum Laude in 1980 from Florida A & M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. Jones was a member of the world famous FAMU Marching 100 and Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity.  Along with teaching 50 private saxophone students per week, Jones and his quartet are in high demand to perform many events in Louisville as well as the surrounding Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, and Illinois area.

Jones is very involved in the world of jazz education. For 10 years Jones taught at the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Camps, as well as other camps and Festivals in Ohio and Indiana. He has given jazz improvisation workshops and has been a guest soloist at Ohio State University, Austin Peay State University, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Indiana State University, Bradley University, Ball State University, Purdue University, The University of Dayton, St. Louis University, Central Michigan University, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, The University of Kentucky, The University of Evansville, Eastern Kentucky University, Jefferson Community College, and many others.

Jazz Advocate with help from WDPS Radio, Park-N-Go Airport Parking, Kroger, Jazz Central and the Dayton Pizza Factory will produce their sixth benefit concert for the Gabriel Foundation to attain funds for musical instruments for area youth. On Saturday, September 22nd the Ron Jones Quartet from Louisville will perform from 8pm to midnight at Jazz Central 2931 E, 3rd St. in Dayton, Ohio. Tickets, some of which will be given away on WDPS 89.5-FM Radio, are $7.50 advanced and $10 at the door. There will be door prizes and pizza during the event, so come out, be entertained and help us in this worthy cause! Find more details at:

Toronto Film Fest – Day #6

Hello Again.

It’s day #6…the days are flying by.

I started off the morning with FRANCES HA – the new film from Noah Baumbach (director or THE SQUID AND THE WHALE, GREENBERG and MARGOT AT THE WEDDING).  Greta Gerwig stars as Frances – a kindred spirit, down-on-her luck, professional dancer in NYC.  The film is about her relationships and always-shifting residence.  We grit our teeth as we watch her make mistakes (turning down jobs because she’s too proud, her alcohol intake, how she deals with men, etc.) and we truly like spending time with her even though she can certainly banter on while getting intoxicated.  The writing and lead performance are what make this black/white film work, but I don’t think some of our regulars at THE NEON will connect with the material.  (That said, I liked it quite a bit…and the music cues are delightful.)

Next up was a film that I was very excited to see – HYDE PARK ON HUDSON – starring Bill Murray and Laura Linney.  This film appeared to be the next KING’S SPEECH (after seeing the marketing), but it’s not as magical as I had hoped.  Don’t get me wrong…it’s a wonderful little film – it’s just not the next big thing.  This is the movie about FDR and his extramarital relationship.  It’s also about the weekend when the King & Queen of England visited…and the bond between the USA and Great Britain was forever changed.  The photography is lovely, the performances are great…in addition to a couple other notes, I wish there was more of Eleanor.

Lastly, I saw DEAD EUROPE – a film about a son who goes to spread his father’s ashes in Greece only to begin discovering dark family secrets.  Now residing in Australia, the young man’s travels take him all over Europe and get him into some disturbing situations.  The premise and first  1/2 of this film were quite promising.  Unfortunately, the 3rd act became a little bombastic, and I started to care less for the characters as I thought the plot became a little too over-the-top. That said, I think it’s important to expose deep-seeded racism and hatred…and this film is full of it.

There was one other film I started today.  But after 15 minutes, I couldn’t stand it.  The description was misleading, and the material was not at all to my liking.  I had planned on 4 films – alas I only really saw three and had a nice dinner instead (eating right is something that generally doesn’t happen during this trip).

2nd Annual Cyclops Fest in Yellow Springs

Cyclops Fest is back and fresh for 2012! Last year’s fest was a huge success with a larger than expected turn out, over 50 handmade vendors, great food and 6 musical acts. This year will be even better with over 80 handmade vendors (inside and out), live skate and BMX demos, Festival Beer Garden (sponsored by WYSO) kids activities and 9 musical acts. Located in the heart of Yellow Springs at the John Bryan Center, Cyclops Fest will have something for everyone!

Cyclops Fest will be a showcase for Ohio musicians. Artemis Center provides support and information for victims of domestic violence and their children.  They currently have a need for  responsible, caring, and reliable babysitters for Thursday Nights. Babysitting services are provided so clients can attend support group worry-free knowing their child is having a blast from 5:45 – 7:45 PM. Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior perpetrated by an intimate partner against another. It is an epidemic-affecting people in every community, regardless of age, economic status, nationality or educational background. Violence against women is often accompanied by emotional abuse and controlling behavior, and thus is part of a systemic pattern of dominance and control. Domestic violence results in physical injury, psychological trauma, and sometimes death. The consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and truly last a lifetime.

  • 85 -95% of all domestic violence victims are female
  • About 1 out of 4 women will be abused by a partner in her lifetime.
  • Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44 in the US; more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined
  • A woman is beaten by her husband or partner every 15 seconds in the US
  • Police report that between 40% and 60% of the calls they receive are domestic violence disputes
  • 50% of all homeless women and children in this country are fleeing domestic violence
  • The health-related costs of rape, physical assault, stalking and homicide by intimate partners exceed $5.8 billion each year
  • In the US, more than 1200 women are killed each year by their intimate partner

In addition to helping people in crisis, Artemis has become a community resource for creating a coordinated response to domesticviolence. Because all systems must work together to protect victims and hold batterers accountable, Artemis and the YWCA joined together to form The Family Violence Collaborative in 1993. This Collaborative has brought together law enforcement, criminal justice, child protection and health care professionals to develop protocols of response.

Four years after the last Dayton region Homearama, The Home Builders Association of Dayton will be presenting the 2012 Homearama Lifestyle Edition showcase of custom homes in the beautiful Sugar Camp – Pointe Oakwood community from Friday, September 14 through Sunday, September 30.  The fully decorated and furnished homes range in size from 2,200 square feet to over 4,000 and will feature the latest styles, building and design trends, landscaping and technologies, with expected prices to range from $395,000 to over $600,000.

The current HBA of Dayton Builders for the show include: two homes from Bob and Steve Rhoads of R.A. Rhoads Custom Homes, Mike & Jeff Miller of M/M Construction and Scott Dickey of South Dayton Builders. The Sugar Camp-Pointe Oakwood developer is Oakwood Investment Group, LLC with partners Union Savings Bank and Landmark Title Agency South.

High Performance Homes

For the first time ever, the Green Building Task Force of the HBA of Dayton will provide an educational experience to assist new home buyers and home owners considering remodeling in the many choices they will face when exploring having their dream home reach the level of the industry’s terms of a “High Performance Home (HPH).”

The group will host the first “High Performance Home Pavilion” included with Homearama at the Pointe Oakwood site. THE LAST OUNCE OF COURAGE (09/11 SPECIAL ADVANCED SHOW!)

Producers of a fictional movie about a mayor fighting a religious freedom battle in his own small town that mirrors the real-life culture wars in the U.S. have launched a social media campaign in hopes of starting a movement in support of liberty.

“‘Last Ounce of Courage’ is more than a movie with heart, it cries out for freedom and brings awareness to the issue that our personal liberties are slowly being threatened and questioned,” said the director, Kevin McAfee. “While the film is bipartisan, it reminds us that it’s our personal rights as Americans that bring us together, and we must join in sending an important message about freedom to our nation’s leaders during this critical election season.” Veritas Entertainment describes the movie as a powerful story of a grieving grandfather inspired by his grandson to take a stand for what’s right against a tide of apathy and vanishing liberty. Amid a backdrop of military conflict abroad and domestic wars against freedom, a highly decorated combat veteran is reminded that we best honor our fallen he-roes by holding dear to what they gave their all to defend.

“Last Ounce of Courage” is the first theatrical motion picture to receive “The Chuck Norris Seal of Approval.”

Dayton South and Huber Heights will have a special advanced screening on Tuesday, September 11th at both 2pm and 7pm for only $5. The film will open on Friday, September 14th.

FINDING NEMO 3D (09/14)

It’s been 9 years since this Disney/Pixar film first warmed everyone’s hearts in theaters.  Now, Disney is bringing it back for a limited run and has enhanced it in 3D!  A clown fish named Marlin lives in the Great Barrier Reef loses his son, Nemo. After he ventures into the open sea, despite his father’s constant warnings about many of the ocean’s dangers. Nemo is abducted by a boat
and netted up and sent to a dentist’s office in Sydney. So, while Marlin ventures off to try to retrieve Nemo, Marlin meets a fish named Dory, a blue tang suffering from short-term memory loss. The companions travel a great distance, encountering various dangerous sea creatures such as sharks, anglerfish and jellyfish, in order to rescue Nemo from the dentist’s office, which is situated by Sydney Harbor. While the two are doing this, Nemo and the other sea animals in the dentist’s fish tank plot a way to return to Sydney Harbor to live their lives free again.

THE BIRDS (09/19)

On September 19th Dayton South and Huber Heights will be playing Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds for one night only. Originally
released in 1963, The Birds follows Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) as she plays a practical joke on her friend Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor). When birds begin attacking everyone’s instinct is to survive.  Turner Classic Movies Host Robert Osborne will introduce Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birdsand share with you an exclusive interview he conducted with the film’s star Tippi Hedren specifically for this special presentation. Hedren will not only reveal how “Hitch” hand-picked her to play the part of Melanie Daniels but also how the movie that launched her career — ended it. Osborne will even reach deep into the TCM Archives to share more on set stories from Hedren’s co-stars: Rod Taylor and Suzanne Pleshette.

QUEEN HUNGARIAN RHAPSODY LIVE IN BUDAPEST (09/20)

A concert film focusing on a historic 1986 performance Queen gave in Budapest, Hungary, during the band’s final tour with late frontman Freddie Mercury. Will feature 5.1 surround sound audio and digitally re-mastered footage of the show, which took place in front of a crowd of 80,000 at the city’s Nepstadion. Beginning with a 25 minute documentary and leading in with a concert, shows unreleased scenes of both band members and in the rehearsal studio. Dayton South and The Greene will host this concert for two dates, 9/20at 7:30pm and 9/23 at 2pm.

Volunteers for Dayton! Opportunities: September 11-18

Welcome to our new column for urban volunteer opportunities! I’ll be posting all kinds of ways to get involved in city neighborhoods – from hand-on service to crowdfunding to fun community-building events – so if you have items for submission e-mail me or add them to our Facebook group!

Spotlight on: Garden Station

Have you driven on Wayne Avenue downtown and wondered what that raucous splash of color was by the railroad tracks? Or maybe you’re a regular at the many frequent events occurring at this two-acre community art park, such as the weekly Sunday Market or ‘Free Music First Friday.’ Launched in 2008 as an initiative of the Dayton Circus Creative Collective, Garden Station is now a stand-alone organization led by Lisa Helm with a small crew of volunteers. It is an “urban hub where the Dayton community can come together to enjoy art, campfires, festivals, movies, concerts and community gardens.” They always need help on Saturday work days throughout the growing season, and this week, they are holding Wine and Weeding Wednesday to get spruced up for Urban Nights. The garden’s current fiscal sponsorship agreement expires on September 14 and its estimated monthly costs are $300, so they’d love if you made a tax-deductible donation before Friday! Or if you don’t fancy yourself a philanthropist, you can still give by eating at Blind Bob’s on the first Monday of the month and mentioning Garden Station Night.   • Guide our county’s future: Montgomery County is asking citizens to give input through a series of public forums. The topic for Tuesday, Sep. 11th is “Where Do We Stand vs. Other Communities?” Seen any great ideas in other areas that you’d like to bring back here? Chime in!
  • Show your art on downtown streets: Activated Spaces, the Downtown Dayton Plan’s joint project of Generation Dayton and updayton, is conducting a final call for submissions for art to fill downtown storefronts. Artists will appreciate that they’re printing the art on vinyl window clings this time, making installation much easier! Click here for more information and to apply by the September 14th deadline.
  • The November library levy (Issue 70) includes an “upgraded main library that will be a regional information, reading and cultural attraction for downtown Dayton.” Their online volunteer form asks for help with phonecalls, going door-to-door, endorsers, poll greeters, and public speakers.
  • Bike sharing for downtown was recently a hot topic of discussion in our group, and we learned that Bike Miami Valley is exploring the idea. Fill out their brief online survey to share your thoughts on a ‘smart bike’ system!
  • Which urban neighborhoods are on Facebook? Several years ago, DMM publisher Bill Pote and I led a training at City Hall to get more neighborhoods on social media. Let us know how far we’ve come by adding to my running list.
  • Urban Nights: Still a few more slots availablefor volunteers!

  • Clean up North Main Street: Volunteer help is needed for cleaning up litter and overgrown vegetation; supplies such as gloves, brooms and bags are provided. Saturday, Sep. 15, 8:30am-1pm, 2141 N.   • Demo Day at the Fifth Street Brewpub: Meet at the community-owned brewpub (1600 E Fifth) at 10 am, Saturday, Sep 15 to demo the interior of the brewhouse. Email them if you can make it so they can plan accordingly (e.g: buy enough beer)
  • Community-Police Action Planning: Learn about community-police relations, give feedback, and sign up for volunteer opportunities at the Dayton Community Police Council’s Community Day Party. Saturday, Sep. 15 11am-3pm, Convention Center.
  • Help make peace in Dayton neighborhoods: The Dayton Mediation Center is looking for volunteer mediators to attend upcoming trainings and commit to helping with conflict resolution. More details can be found here.

Success!

  • Adding color to Xenia Avenue: Over 170 volunteers participated in the year-and-a-half long mosaic mural project led by K12 Gallery for Young People in partnership with East End Community Services Corporation. The finished project can now be seen at 504 Xenia Ave. Like K12’s page to get involved in future projects! The new mosaics decorate the facade of the future location of the Corner Cupboard Charities thrift store, a volunteer-run organization that raises money for other local nonprofits. Check them out!

  • DDR volunteers rocked it!: Over 200 volunteers came out to support the Downtown Dayton Revival Music Fest this past weekend and a good time was had by all.
  • Invest in the city through real estate! Theresa Gasper of Full Circle Development, LLC recently shared some amazing before-and-after pictures of the homes she and partners have transformed in the Historic South Park neighborhood, an area which saw a 23% value increase in the last reappraisal. There are plenty of great urban realtors who would love to get you started!
  • First Friday Park Planters: A dozen volunteers organized through our Facebook group planted about 40 shrubs and perennials at a little downtown park on Friday night before exploring First Friday together. This was made possible by a grant that volunteer Brian Ressler obtained from Keep Montgomery County Beautiful. Thanks everyone!

 

Toronto Film Fest – Day #5

Hello Everyone,

I have to make a confession.  Because we’re opening THE MASTER on Sept. 21, it has not been a priority for me to see during TIFF…especially because it’s always slated up against something else that I want to see.  That said, I did see the first 70 minutes today…and I found it quite engaging.  I’ll be anxious to see the rest!

The first film I saw today (in its entirety) was THANKS FOR SHARING – a dramedy about sex addiction.  Though there are lots of really funny moments, this film really does take the sex addiction part quite seriously.  Mark Ruffalo and Tim Robbins star along with relative newcomer Josh Gad …with supporting roles by Gwyneth Paltrow and Pink! (who is wonderful).  The film is directed by Stuart Blumberg.  Though this is his directorial debut, Blumberg has had his hand in filmmaking for a while.  (He wrote THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT a couple years ago.)  Though I thought this film was too long (I realize that I’m beginning to sound like Harvey Weinstein – who is famous for chopping filmmakers’ films), I do think it’s pretty good for the most part…and very audience friendly.

Next I saw the new film by Edward Burns – A FITZGERALD FAMILY CHRISTMAS.  This film started out on a really strong note.  It was an honest, insightfully funny film about a dysfunctional family during the holidays.  Sadly, the film went in a couple directions that were very problematic, and the movie ultimately didn’t work for me.  However, there are a couple characters that made the film worth watching…particularly Anita Gillette (known recently as Liz Lemon’s mother on 30 ROCK).

Lastly, I saw what might be at the top of the list so far for me.  Francois Ozon’s new film is spectacular.  IN THE HOUSE is the story of a schoolboy who has taken an interest in writing and his grammar teacher who is helping him hone his craft.  As the boy continues to write a story about his voyeuristic observations regarding a family in his neighborhood, the teacher becomes more invested in knowing what happens next…all the while teaching the boy what works and doesn’t work narratively.  It’s a twisted, inventive story…and it’s as funny as it is thrilling.  Both Francois Ozon and Kristin Scott Thomas were at the screening.  I loved it!

Sadly, there are no trailers for the films I screened today…so I’ll leave you with one for THE MASTER.

Toronto Film Fest – Day #4

Hello!

I’m gonna try and make this short and sweet…as it’s already late and I need to wake by 6am again tomorrow.

It was quite a day.  4 films…all (mostly) good.

First off, I saw David O. Russell’s SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (Russell did I HEART HUCKABEES, FLIRTING WITH DISASTER and – starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert DeNiro.  This dysfunctional family comedy about mental illness was full of laughs – mostly due to honest observations.  I wish it had been a little shorter, but ultimately I think it will be  crowd-pleaser. (editorial note – I think that the pairing of obsessing over sports paired mental illness issues is an interesting marriage)

A ROYAL AFFAIR is a period drama about Queen Caroline of Denmark in the late 18th Century.  She married into the monarchy, and her husband was a childish, self-absorbed man.  Caroline had an affair with the royal physician, and they managed to make numerous changes to government.  The photography and set/costume design of this film are delicious, and the lead actress – Alicia Vikander – is absolutely stunning (she’s also in ANNA KARENINA).

This evening, I saw the film that will undoubtedly be dubbed “The Next Marigold Hotel.”  QUARTET – Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut – stars Maggie Smith, Bill Connolly, Pauline Collins, and Tom Courtenay.  This little film is an absolute delight!  It’s about a retirement home for retired musicians…and in addition to the 4 lead actors, it stars numerous singers and musicians in their 70’s 80’s and 90’s (Hoffman wanted real musical artists to live in his scenes – not just actors playing musicians) .  Tonight was it’s world premiere, and I must confess something….  I’ve seen people go insane for movie stars over the years.  Johnny Depp.  Brad Pitt.  Angelina Jolie.  People scream, the jump up and down, and sometimes they even cry.  Tonight, when Maggie Smith was standing 10 feet away from me, tears streamed down my face.  From THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE  to ROOM WITH A VIEW…from THE V.I.P.s to DOWNTON ABBEY, I have loved Dame Maggie for decades, and it was a complete thrill to see her in person!  The Q&A with the principal cast as well as Hoffman was a night to remember, and the film is going to be a hit with our audience.

Lastly, I saw LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED –  the latest film from Sussane Bier (director of BROTHERS, IN A BETTER WORLD and OPEN HEARTS).  (Interestingly, the original Danish title would be translated into THE BALD HAIRDRESSER.)  This film is much lighter than Bier’s recent work.  There are some serious subjects on the table – but there are also a lot of laughs.  Bier, along with lead actress Trine Dyrholm (also in A ROYAL AFFAIR) and Pierce Brosnan, introduced the film and did a Q&A.  Though I liked most of this film, I also thought it was a little too long given the subject/story.  That said, Dyrholm is a joy to watch.

Wild Blackberry Beer – Rivertown Ojos Negros

Rivertown Ojos Negros

Yesterday was apparently Sour Beer Day, so I decided to get all reviewy with a sour that’s been sitting in my fridge for a few weeks. Rivertown‘s Ojos Negros is an American Wilde Ale aged with Blackberries in oak wine barrels. This beer is brewed a stone’s throw away in Cincinnati.

From their website:

AVAILABLE IN 750ML BOTTLE ONLY, RELEASED ONCE YEARLY IN JULY. A WILD FERMENTED BREW AGED IN OAK WINE BARRELS WITH OVER 140 POUNDS OF WHOLE BLACKBERRIES FOR ONE YEAR. 6.3% ABV, 8 SRM, 6 IBU

APPEARANCE

The beer pours a surprisingly clear reddish-brown color with absolutely zero head. There isn’t a lot of visible “bubbliness”, which is somewhat surprising. It actually looks very much like a slightly carbonated wine. It definitely gained a lot of color from the blackberries, let’s find out if it gained any aroma/flavor from them.
