Coming Up in Dayton Theatre 10/4 – 10/13

October 3, 2013 By Sarah Caplan Leave a Comment

Welcome back, theatre lovers! Let’s see what there is to choose from for the next two weeks!

Opening This Weekend

Time Stands Still

The Dayton Theatre Guild

timestandsstill-iconThe Skinny: Seriously wounded in Afghanistan, photographer Sarah is brought home to recuperate by her writer and live-in boyfriend, James. She is soon visited by her editor and his new and much younger girlfriend. He sees her work and wants a book. And James wants something altogether more conventional.

Dates: Opening Friday, 10/4 and running three weekends to close Sunday, 10/20.

Tickets: Please visit the Theatre Guild website at www.daytontheatreguild.org

SPAMalot

507aThe Skinny:  This musical is lovingly ripped off from the motion picture “Monty Python and The Holy Grail”. It’s the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. Flying cows, killer rabbits, the lady of the lake and show-stopping musical numbers are just part of this hilarious, yet highly irreverent parody.

Dates: Opening this Friday, 10/4 and running two weekends, to close on Saturday, 10/12.

Tickets: Please visit the Sinclair website; http://www.sinclair.edu/arts/theatre/box-office/index.cfm

The Art of Self-Defense

ArtofSelfDefenseThe Undercroft Players

The Skinny: A funny, wise, and ultimately powerful depiction of five modern women who casually meet in a T’ai Chi class, and who eventually, through growth, discovery and mutual support, change the quality of their lives.

Dates: One weekend only, this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets: This piece is being produced at First Lutheran Church Corner of First St. and Wilkinson St. Downtown Dayton. 7 pm Friday and Saturday and 3 pm Sunday. Tickets are $5 at the door.

PFLAG Dayton Fundraiser to Support Scholarships

October 2, 2013 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Michael Curtner & Dave Broering won one of the top prizes at the 2012 "When the Stars Come Out!"

Michael Curtner & Dave Broering won one of the top prizes at the 2012 “When the Stars Come Out!”

Popular TV show “Dancing With the Stars” comes to Dayton this Saturday when PFLAG Dayton hosts its seventh annual fundraiser, “When the Stars Come Out!” Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Dayton Woman’s Club, 225 N Ludlow St. in downtown Dayton.

This year, most of the participating couples are training with local dance instructor Johnny Glaze, who has volunteered to teach participating couples dance moves since the event began. In between the couples’ dance performances, individuals will perform as part of the “Dayton’s Got Talent” portion of the event, which this year will have a Great Gatsby theme.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, which are available at the door, are $25 each. The winning couple is selected by the number of audience votes received. Each admission ticket includes five votes, and additional votes can be purchased for five votes for $20 and one vote for $5.

All proceeds from the event fund scholarships offered by PFLAG Dayton and the Greater Dayton LGBT Center. PFLAG Dayton awards at least two $2,000 scholarships annually (one for a straight ally and one for an LGBT student). The Greater Dayton LGBT Center awards at least one $1,000 scholarship for an LGBT student each year. Proceeds from the 2012 “When the Stars Come Out!” allowed both organizations to award additional scholarships this year.

“PFLAG Dayton’s mission is to promote the health and wellbeing of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, as well as their families and friends, through advocacy, education and support,” said Jan Couchman, PFLAG Dayton president. “This scholarship program allows us to meet all aspects of our mission while supporting the next generation of leaders — and this fundraiser is what allows us to do that important work.”

Brandon Booher and Gaston Herndon, 2012 best dance performance

Brandon Booher and Gaston Herndon received the best dance performance award at last year’s event.

The Dayton chapter of PFLAG is affiliated with the national organization. PFLAG chapters are located in more than 360 communities throughout the United States and in 11 countries. PFLAG Dayton offers avariety of programs to support the LGBT community, as well as their family and friends. The group holds monthly meetings at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at Harmony Creek Church, 5280 Bigger Rd. in Kettering. Each meeting offers both a program and a support group.

For more about PFLAG Dayton, visit http://pflagdayton.org, email [email protected] or call 937-640-3333. For more about “When the Stars Come Out!” contact Jan Couchman at 937-248-8621 or [email protected].

Cinnamon and Vanilla Add Spice To New Jagermeister Limited Addition Flavor

October 2, 2013 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

Jagermesiter-SpiceThe seventh-largest spirit brand in the world and the number one imported liqueur in the US introduced the new flavoured variant to the US through Sidney Frank Importing Co, and it’s on the shelves today at Belmont Party Supply for $23.20 for a 750ml bottle, as well as at  Little Farm, Handy One and Air City Wine & Liquor.  Look for it at Arrow Wine and other stores by Monday.

A blend of Jägermeister’s traditional herbal liqueur recipe with additional vanilla and cinnamon for a “warmer taste”, Jägermeister Spice is a limited edition expression bottled at 25% abv designed to be drunk neat, mixed with cola, or – unlike the original Jägermeister which is suggested to be served as an ice-cold shot – taken as a shot at room temperature.

“From our conversations with Jägermeister consumers, we know new flavours and unique experiences allow them opportunities to bond with their friends,” said Adam Rosen, executive vice president of marketing for Jägermeister at Sidney Frank Importing Company. “Jägermeister Spice offers both new drinkers and our long-time fans an innovative product that can be enjoyed in any setting  We’re expecting to sell more than 100,000 nine-liter cases in the first limited edition rollout, which will be from October to December.”.

Jägermeister Spice is the first major product extension in the US for the German liqueur brand in more than 40 years.

“Although Spice is certainly a unique take on our signature recipe, it also stays true to the original blend of Jägermeister, recognised as one of the most iconic spirits brands in the world,” said Michael Volke, member of the executive board at brand owner Mast-Jägermeister SE.

Club Panama Rocks for 7th Annual Juvenile Diabetes Benefit

October 2, 2013 By Mike Ritchie Leave a Comment

1231613_10200677179353441_1470829809_nFor seven years Club Panama owner Susie Maynard has held the For Love of Sonny Rock 4 A Cure, a juvenile diabetes fundraiser to raise awareness, educate and honor her son who passed away in 2004 from the disease. Maynard has owned the club for over 25 years, giving several area bands their start including ShovelHead, National Headcase, Devium and Mother’s Onion. In 1994 she was dubbed The Mother Of All Rock by the Springfield News & Sun. Panama was also one of the only clubs at the time to give original local metal bands a shot.

The club has received several awards from the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). Over 3 million people die annually from the disease and it’s the leading cause of kidney failure, blindness, amputations, and a major factor in heart attacks and strokes, among other conditions. It’s a physically debilitating disease and no cure has been found.

On Friday October 4th and Saturday the 5th, 12 bands from Dayton and Springfield will volunteer their time and talent to help support the cause. Friday’s lineup includes Element of Surprise, Fletcher Munson, Blackout Method, TBH (This Blessed Hatred), National Headcase and Killed By Art. Saturday’s showcase features The Defendants, Mothers Onion, Dead Beat, Gathering Mercury, Silver Skull and Abrade The Regal. There will be raffles, auctions and drawings both nights. Both shows start at 8:00pm with a $5 cover. Club Panama is located at 951 James Street, Springfield OH 45503.

Grand Opening for Newly Expanded Clothes That Work Boutique Thursday

October 2, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

grand openingClothes That Work, a local Dayton nonprofit organization, invites the public to a Grand Opening of the newly expanded Boutique on Thursday, October 3, 2013. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 10 am and the Boutique will be open from 10am to 6pm

The CTW Boutique, located at the Montgomery County Job Center near the CTW offices, is an upscale resale shop open to the public featuring high quality clothing from many top designers and retailers. When donated clothing is too colorful, too dressy or not appropriate for interview or work situations, CTW sells it in the Boutique and online at eBay.

“At its core, this project supports greater earned revenue that will allow mission driven services for Montgomery County job seekers to increase,” said Paula Cosby, executive director of Clothes That Work. “We expect increased revenue of nine percent, allowing us to serve an additional 882 job seekers in the next five years.”

“We looked at several other location options in the Miami Valley, but ultimately the Job Center matches our mission here at Clothes That Work,” added Cosby.

The expansion, which has doubled the size of the Boutique, also features eight ctw entrydesignated parking spots at the Job Center exclusively for Boutique shoppers as well as an exterior entrance.

CTW worked with architectural firm Roll & Associates, Inc. and interior designer Elements IV on the project.

For more information on the Boutique, visit clothesthatwork.org.

Clothes That Work provides Montgomery County job seekers with professional clothing, knowledge and tools to present a work ready image throughout the process of a job search and initial employment.

ENOUGH SAID, 2 French Imports & More at THE NEON

October 1, 2013 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

enough-said-posterHello Everyone,

We’re cleaning house this weekend. If you still need to see BLUE JASMINE, AUSTENLAND, SALINGER or THE HUNT, you only have until Thursday to see them at THE NEON. For remaining showtimes for this week, visit our official site at www.neonmovies.com.

On Friday, we will open 3 new films. First of all, we’ll open one of the best reviewed comedies of the year – a film I really like – ENOUGH SAID. Directed by Nicole Holofcener, this film is smart, funny & touching, and it has two incredible central performances by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini. In addition, Francophiles will rejoice for our one-week engagement of 2 French films – POPULAIRE and HAUTE CUISINE (and foodies will certainly want to see the latter).

Synopsis for ENOUGH SAID: “A divorced and single parent, Eva (Julia Louis Dreyfus) spends her days enjoying work as a masseuse but dreading her daughter’s impending departure for college. She meets Albert (James Gandolfini) – a sweet, funny and like-minded man also facing an empty nest. As their romance quickly blossoms, Eva befriends Marianne (Catherine Keener), her new massage client. Marianne is a beautiful poet who seems “almost perfect” except for one prominent quality: she rags on her ex-husband way too much. Suddenly, Eva finds herself doubting her own relationship with Albert as she learns the truth about Marianne’s Ex. ENOUGH SAID is a sharp, insightful comedy that humorously explores the mess that often comes with getting involved again.” (taken from Fox Searchlight) Click HERE to visit the film’s official site.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1TDTv_tGd8′]

Synopsis for POPULAIRE: “Spring, 1958: 21-year-old Rose Pamphyle lives with her grouchy widower father who runs the village store. Engaged to the son of the local mechanic, she seems destined for the quiet, drudgery-filled life of a housewife. But that’s not the life Rose longs for. When she travels to Lisieux in Normandy, where charismatic insurance agency boss Louis Echard is advertising for a secretary, the ensuing interview is a disaster. But Rose reveals a special gift – she can type at extraordinary speed. Unwittingly, the young woman awakens the dormant sports fan in Louis. If she wants the job she’ll have to compete in a speed typing competition…He’ll turn her into the fastest girl in the world!” (taken from The Weinstein Company) Click HERE to visit the film’s official site.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q71XSMlPN8′]

Synopsis for HAUTE CUISINE: “Hortense Laborie (Catherine Frot), a renowned chef from Perigord, is astonished when the President of the Republic (Jean d’Ormesson) appoints her his personal cook, responsible for creating all his meals at the Elysee Palace. Despite jealous resentment from the other kitchen staff, Hortense quickly establishes herself, thanks to her indomitable spirit. The authenticity of her cooking soon seduces the President, but the corridors of power are littered with traps.” (taken from The Weinstein Company) Click HERE to visit the film’s official site.

THE DAYTON LGBT FILM FESTIVAL is just 10 days away! The dates are set for October 11-13, and the line-up is fantastic. The official site is up and running, and you can visit our Facebook Page for last-minute postings. We hope you’ll look at our site and find something you’d like to see…if you’re into thought-provoking documentaries or period films or satirical comedies, we’ve got it covered. As I’m writing this newsletter, there are less than 10 passes left (we made 60)…but there are plenty of single tickets to individual shows. Tickets can be purchased via the official site (with surcharges) or at THE NEON (for face value)!

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJqw0hTAhXY’]

THE WATCHER’S REVELATION will screen October 24 at 7:30 and 9:45. “Is a race of benign extraterrestrials secretly influencing the world’s governments? Are these creatures really ancient aliens sent to protect humanity from self-destruction, or are they evil beings set on deception as the world approaches its final days?…This faith-based, science fiction film was made by lifepointe church in Dayton, OH, featuring a cast and crew of local talent who worked for an occasional pizza and the love of film. Tickets are $5 and extremely limited. They are available for purchase at lifepointe church and will be available at The Neon box office starting October 7.” (taken from Lifepointe Church press notes)

We’ve got so much going on in the next few weeks…and we’re heading into Oscar season. I’m so delighted to announce that 12 YEARS A SLAVE has just been added to our line-up. It’s certain to be nominated for “Best Picture” this year, and it is exceptional!

Thanks for your continued support!
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Warped Wing Brewing Co. Announces December Opening

October 1, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro 3 Comments

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Warped Wing Brewing Company (WWBC) is excited to announce its plan to open a full-scale production craft brewery in the heart of downtown Dayton. The new brewery will be located at 26 Wyandot Street, former site of the Buckeye Brass & Iron Foundry, circa 1911. Scheduled to launch in late 2013, Warped Wing will brew and distribute its draught and canned beers to restaurants, taverns, and retailers throughout Dayton and surrounding markets.

Warped Wing is operated by four Co-Founders (pictured left to right): Joe Waizmann, President, John Haggerty, Brewmaster, Nick Bowman, Sales & Marketing and Mike Stover, CFO.

The WWBC team believes their passion for craft beer coupled with their extensive industry experience will bring a unique approach to the local beer scene. We also share enthusiasm for local community development and are committed to bringing back well-crafted beers that Daytonians and Ohioans can embrace.

  •   Warped Wing will distinguish itself through its brewing philosophy inspired by Dayton’s rich history of innovation and invention. WWBC is committed to bringing that same spirit forward into today’s American craft beer scene by introducing new proprietary beer styles and brewing their own “warped” interpretations of existing styles. Warped Wing will also maintain a focus on creating unique seasonal and specialty beers.
  •   Their brewing philosophy is shaped around co-founder, John Haggerty’s lifelong passion for the art and science of brewing. A German educated brewmaster, John brings two decades of commercial brewing expertise to WWBC. His career in brewing has spanned small and large breweries in the U.S. Haggerty states “As far as brewing philosophy goes we are essentially going to make well-balanced beers that show off the various ingredients when appropriate (i.e. hoppy when it is supposed to be hoppy and malty when it is supposed to be malty, etc., etc.) Additionally, we will follow sound production theory butwill take liberties and break rules regarding process and recipe formulation when it makes sense and is appropriate to do so.”
WWBCdemo001 (2)Warped Wing will also differentiate itself in the market with its unique 4 pack 16 ounce can packaging. The choice to offer their beers in cans is multifold:

  • Their desire to give a nod to Ermal Fraze, inventor of the pop-top can in Dayton.
  • The portability of cans provides customers convenience and easier access to more beer occasions.
  • The 16 ounce traditional pint offers our retail customers with limited draught space the ability to serve a true pint of Warped Wing beer. Waizmann adds, “We hope our cans will also inspire our beer friends to dust off their pint glass collections at home”

In addition to distributing their beer, WWBC will feature an industrial-style Tasting Room where guests can enjoy Warped Wing beers. Customers are also welcome to carry-in or have food delivered to the brewery. Waizmann adds, “Our guests can expect a unique visual experience from the moment they walk through the front door with the industrial feel and open brewery layout. Once inside they will be able to sample our various beer offerings while appreciating views of the downtown skyline and cathedral of stainless steel.”

The Warped Wing name is derived from one of Dayton’s famous inventions, “Wing Warping”, a technology invented by the Wright Bros which made controlled flight possible.

warpedwingBowman states “When selecting our name we wanted something that tied into the region but also reflected our teams’ desire to bring new styles to the category”

The Warped Wing mark/logo (wing) was created to pay homage to the “Wing Warping” technology. The twisted wing logo is based on a drawing by James Pettigrew (1834 – 1908), a Scottish Naturalist. The Wright Brothers studied Pettigrew’s work specifically around how birds used their wings to help guide themselves in flight.

You can follow Warped Wing at their website   or via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
