Support The Beer Bill To Allow Ohio Brewers To Make & Sell Higher Proof Beers

March 24, 2014 By Lisa Grigsby 1 Comment

ohio-craft-beerHow many times have you heard of a friend making a beer run to Kentucky?  It’s often because beer drinkers can hop across the Ohio River to buy beers such as Samuel Adams Utopias and Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA, which aren’t available in Ohio.

For Rep. Dan Ramos, a Democrat from Lorain, west of Cleveland, that story is too common, so he recently introduced House Bill 391.  Also known as the  “Ohio Beer Bill” passage would increase the maximum percentage of alcohol allowed in beer sold or produced in the state from 12 to 21 percent. That would bring it line with alcoholic beverages like wine and the low-proof liquors often sold at grocery stores.

Of the 12% current  limit in Ohio, Nick Bowman, one of the co-owners of Dayton’s ohio_beernewest brewery, Warped Wing Brewing Co. says , “besides the fact that it holds some brewers back from creating some higher gravity beers,  the 12% ceiling is irrelevant in today’s craft brewing environment.  14% is really the standard ABV ceiling that most craft breweries can hit (if they want to).

Bowman continues, “I think the biggest reason the change is needed is to prevent craft beer fans from traveling to other surrounding states like KY, IN and PA to seek out these higher gravity beers.  Let’s face it….they probably aren’t spending the gas money just to buy one or two beers above 12% and are most likely buying other beers on these hauls therefore increasing the loss of tax revenue for the state of Ohio.   Let’s keep it local!”

In 2012, 58 Ohio craft brewers produced an estimated 980,696 barrels of beer — fourth nationally and 7 percent of national production — bringing $1.2 billion to the state economy, said Mary Martineau, executive director of the Ohio Craft Brewers Association.

Aaron Spoores, Cavalier Distributing

Aaron Spoores, Ohio  Sales Manager for  Cavalier Distributing says, “I think brewers are being held back..  If a beer happens to land over the 12% mark they either have to dump or be dishonest..neither of which they want to do.  There are already a few breweries producing beers over the limit but not a ton.  People will seek out what they want and what they want is being sold in all states surrounding us like IN, KY and PA, so they are driving and spending money in these states.

Spoores also shared, It still cost the brewers an enormous amount of money to produce a high abv beer.  Money that will be passed on to the consumer.  So it’s not likely that there will be a fleet of new high abv that is going to hit the shelves.  Bottom line I guess its like telling a painter they can’t use a certain color paint..does the artist always want to use that color?  No, but when the time is right and and they want to create something special..  That paint is there for them.”

If passed, sales of beer with an alcohol percentage between 12 and 21 would begin a year after the bill’s passage; brewing could begin immediately. Beer over 12 percent alcohol could not have caffeine or other stimulants in it.

Ohio House Bill 391 proposes to increase Ohio’s outdated 12% alcohol-by-volume (ABV) restriction on beer to 21%.   We think all craft beer fans in Ohio should support this bill  and it’s pretty easy to show your support in 3 quick and easy steps as outlined on  OhioCraftBeer.com.

Once you’ve done that, let us know in the comments below and when it passes we’ll buy you a beer! Cheers!

The Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC is excited to introduce participating designers that will be taking part in A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance May 9-10, 2014!!  A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance will be showcasing both emerging and established designers to help raise money for the Art of (DE-FI)ance Fashion Fund!  The Fashion Fund will be used to help designers purchase materials such as fabrics to produce their lines, pay entrance fees into influential Fashion Weeks  that will put them in front of buyers, as well as helping to pay for some travel expenses!!

Kicking off during Urban Nights on May 9, A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance will be flying high with the First Flight Now Fashion Vintage Couture Ball and the Stylish Mom Runway Show on May 10 at Commander Aero, with the ShoeDIVA Boutique as our Official Shoe Sponsor, and Izzi Bags by Anne Agoren as our Official Handbag Sponsor, Rebecca Huber will be making her runway debut of Maderas Beach Co.

With that being said, every week leading up to the Weekend of (DE-FI)ance, we will be doing a Q & A Session with each  of the participating designers in an effort to shed a little light on what it takes to make it in the industry and why the City of Dayton should embrace area and independent designers!  So without further ado, Introducing Rebecca Huber.

Q) How did you get your start in the fashion industry?

A)  Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been drawing and making clothing for myself, obsessing over the fashions found in magazines and online. It’s one of my passions I never really embraced until this January, when I decided to just take the plunge and see where it takes me. I am still getting my start in the fashion industry.

Q)  Who were your influences personally and professionally?

A)  My mother and my two grandmothers were avid sewers and I got my early training and support from them. Now, my husband is my biggest supporter and I am so grateful for his support, patience and love. Professionally, I don’t really have anyone who takes the place of a mentor, but I am always inspired by women who are fully engaged in their passions: Karena and Katrina of Tone It Up, the creators of swim brand Maaji, Rebekah Steen of Goldfish Kiss, and many more women just going out there making things happen.

Q)  What were some of the struggles you faced as an emerging designer and what do you consider to be your “Big Break” that took you from being an emerging designer to an established designer?

A)  I’m still an emerging designer. I’ve only been at this for a couple months, so the challenges of starting a business are still ongoing. Gaining exposure and convincing people to take a leap of faith in buying my products are my two biggest challenges. I am excited to see how A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance influences my brand and business; it’s a very big opportunity to have right off the bat.

Q) What has been your biggest challenge trying to get your start in the industry?

A)  Gaining exposure and of course sacrificing time and money without a sure return. It’s a bit of a gamble, and trusting myself and God.  The process is always a challenge.

Q)  There are so many misconceptions about what the Fashion Industry is or what it represents, if there was one myth about the fashion industry that you could debunk what would it be and why?

A)  That it’s entirely vain or a shallow interest. I really think of fashion and style as art and communication. Style choices communicate something about you. Having the ability to experiment with texture, shape, color, function is a critical component of art, and crafting something that you or someone else can wear is a definitely a skill not many people have. Fashion is about much more than being pretty or popular or the best dressed.

Q)  Who is your target market, and when people think of your brand what is the image that you want people to see or represent??

A)  My target market is women, primarily women who love travel and adventure. They have a little bit of tomboy in them, a little bit of glamor and a little bit of practicality. When a woman views my brand, I hope they think of all the places they want to visit, or are reminded of a particularly inspiring trip they took. Wanderlust is a huge component of my brand, as is functionality. I also hope potential customers see the quality of the items, and are excited about the affordability.

Q)  Why is it so important for Fashion to be embraced in smaller markets like Dayton, OH?

A Sneak Peek of Madera's Beach Co.'s Mood Board for A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance.

A Sneak Peek of Madera’s Beach Co.’s Mood Board for A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance.

A)  Smaller markets really are incubators. For budding designers, it’s an opportunity to do the thing they love doing. Someone like me, or a new brand like mine, would not survive in a major fashion hub like New York or Paris. Small markets make fashion accessible to the people who can’t or don’t want to go to a bigger market.

Q)  What are you most excited about in terms of your participation in A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance and what are you hoping to get out of this experience?

A)  I’m very excited to get more exposure, get my brand out there, and let women know they can have a well-fitted, high quality, fashionable bikini for a fraction of the cost of the big design labels or pricey boutiques. Beyond that, I have always wanted to participate in a fashion show, so this is really a dream of mine coming true.

Q)  What advice do you have for those seeking a career in fashion?

A)  Learn about the fashion industry, find your inspiration and just dive in. I haven’t got it figured out, but I am learning to not let my fear of the unknown keep me from pursuing and attaining my goals.

‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’ Review – Dare to Defy Productions – Love Is In The Air

March 22, 2014 By Russell Florence, Jr. Leave a Comment

perfect

It can be extremely challenging for emerging troupes to stake their claim within Dayton’s continuously expansive theater scene. However, Dare to Defy Productions has done so with highly entertaining ease as evidenced in its very charming production of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” Joe DiPietro and Jimmy Roberts’ hit 1996 off-Broadway musical revue.
Presented in the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Center fashioned in a colorful 1950s, Roy Lichtenstein–inspired decor by set designer Ray Zupp, “I Love You…” paints an amusing, appealing portrait of the relatable ups and downs of love and relationships from dating disasters and personal insecurities to wedding jitters and family squabbles.

Framing the show as vignettes keeps the witty action inviting and steadily paced, but there are signs the material has become dated since it was famously heralded as “‘Seinfeld’ set to music.” After all, Sharon Stone isn’t an apt lyric choice these days when referring to film bombshells. Nevertheless, that is a minor quibble among an otherwise playfully sound and surprisingly tender examination of the pursuit men and women undergo in order to find and cherish The One.

Director Rebecca Norgaard, Dare to Defy founder/CEO, assembles a totally engaging, vocally strong ensemble consisting of Jackie Darnell, Bobby Mitchum, Zach King and Mackensie Vonderbrink, familiar faces from Kettering’s Playhouse South. Inhabiting more than 50 roles, the cast, impressively accompanied by pianist Julia Brown and violinist Josh Vantilburgh, is versatile and sharply prepared which isn’t surprising considering this production was previously held in January and February at Mimi’s Café in Beavercreek. When featured as a foursome, the cast’s noteworthy moments include opening number “Cantata for a First Date,” funny double bill “Single Man Drought”/”Why? Cause I’m a Guy,” and the equally comical “Hey There, Single Gal/Guy” that hilariously musicalizes a breakup from a parental perspective. Individually, they firmly step into the spotlight with character-conscious intent. Darnell, a fine soprano, supplies a beautifully gentle “I Will Be Loved Tonight” and is also an operatic joy during “He Called Me.” Mitchum, one of the best tenors in town, fills the moving ballad “Shouldn’t I Be Less in Love with You?” with compellingly mature wonder. King, a source of comic relief, scores big laughs with “The Baby Song.” Vonderbrink, in one of her most endearing appearances, fully embraces “Always a Bridesmaid” with lovelorn radiance.
Dare to Defy’s promising path has only begun, but if the company’s future productions are as good as “I Love You…” I have a feeling audiences will keep coming back.

“I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” concludes today in the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. Performances are at 2 and 8 p.m. Act One: 57 minutes; Act Two: 55 minutes. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visiting www.ticketcenterstage.com. For more information about Dare to Defy auditions and its 2014 season (featuring “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown,” “Altar Boyz,” “Rent” and “Nunsense”) visit daretodefyllc.com, call (937) 999-9949 or send an e-mail to [email protected].

Daytongram: Furthering the Social Media Takeover

March 21, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

image-(1)

A surprising amount of lifelong Dayton locals still seem unaware of what this city truly has to offer. So when we began seeing what some of the Dayton focused Instagram accounts have been doing to showcase the creativity, beauty and unique experiences of the city we wanted to help them come together.

image-(3)Daytongram, Dayton Baton and Dayton’s Best have all been front runners on paving a way for fellow Daytonians to post pictures of their favorite “hidden gems” around town. DaytonGram in particular is one of the earliest adopters of the “newer and better Dayton” mindset.

I recently reached out to Tom Gilliam, the founder of Daytongram, and met him at Ghostlight Coffee with my business partner Josh Boone. We realized almost immediately that there was more to his focus than just taking amazing photos with his iPhone. As he talked, Josh and I realized the vision for what he was doing and how much he deeply cares for the city, but hasn’t been given the proper platform to express himself until now.

Tom can talk about his vision better than I can, so here’s his words on what Daytongram means to him and why he does it.

Why I started daytongram:

In 2012, I started becoming active on Instagram. This grew out of the occasional times my four year old son would fall asleep while riding in the car. Rather than waking him I found myself driving around exploring various areas of Downtown Dayton and taking pictures of The Dayton Arcade, The Old Court House, and other historic buildings along the way.

image-(2)Around the same time, Dave Schmidt of @cincygram and I connected on Instagram. I was very impressed with Dave’s consistency of showcasing Cincinnati at it’s best. After awhile on July 10, 2013 I decided to start @daytongram on various social media outlets after realizing Dayton wasn’t being showcased the way Schmidt was doing for Cincinnati.

Why I put a lot of effort into Daytongram:

While it started as a hobby, it’s shaping up to be so much more. I feel that it’s important to do my best in helping to showcase this great city and not hold back. While I don’t have a background in professional photography, what I lack in technical ability I feel is compensated with passion, creativity, and an eye for framing.

On March 8, 2014 I hosted the first Daytongram photowalk with 75 other local photographers, both amateur and professional, helping spread the vision of why Dayton is the place to be.While I like to shoot at public places and festivals, I feel most passionate about seeking access to areas and sharing experiences which most Daytonians never get to see. The current photo series on The Dayton Arcade called “Lost Jewel of the Gem City” I’ve had the pleasure to work on is one of those experiences. With the future of The Dayton Arcade still in limbo, I hope that the photo series will generate a spark of interest in saving this landmark.

image Why I love Dayton

I love history, and there are few better places for a history buff to live. Because of Daytongram I established a partnership with the historical society Dayton History to run their Instagram @daytonhistory. I encourage everyone to visit the magnificent Carillon Historical Park to learn about Dayton’s history.

We are on the cusp of a Downtown Renaissance, I can feel the energy and excitement around the city growing. There are too many reasons as to why I love Dayton, and I’m excited for the future growth and innovation of this city.

You can follow Tom’s vision on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr. Tell him how awesome he is directly at [email protected].

For all things awesome in Dayton: #daytongram, #forloveofdayton, #daytonsbest, #daytonbaton

REVIEW: Revolver’s Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock Tour Columbus

March 20, 2014 By Mike Ritchie Leave a Comment

Sick Puppies (Photo by Samantha Stewart Photography)

Sick Puppies (Photo by Samantha Stewart Photography)

On Friday, February 28th, The Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock according to Revolver Magazine soared into Columbus via Columbus Events Group, the Alrosa Staff, 99.7 The Blitz, Revolver staff and The Shrunken Heads co-owner and Azoic singer Kristy Venrick with a parking lot full of people following them in. Cilver, Eyes Set to Kill, Lacuna Coil, Sick Puppies and the winner of the Facebook fan voted local opener Able Danger all played for an appreciative loud crowd. Long ago and gone are the days of women being the sexy background or provocative eye candy of the show. Despite the tours descriptive adjective, the talent, history, musicianship and stage presence that brought the ‘chicks’ here got the spotlight.

Able Danger (photo by Samantha Stewart Photography)

Able Danger (photo by Samantha Stewart Photography)

Dayton’s Able Danger bested 74 other bands with female members in a state wide contest with six finalists in a vote based contest on Facebook to earn the opening spot in Columbus that evening. They’re a very young group, together for only four months, but they make up for their hatchling status with a collective four year history in the Dayton scene in other bands. With former moniker Hereafter, guitarist Chris Stewart joined Jason Winner and Ben Willis with blonde mouthpiece Nikki Luttrell to form the progressive rock sound of AD. Look for their debut in April.

They start with Chaos, a dark, ambiance tune with cranky, growling monster in the closet guitars adding Luttrell’s classic keyboard notes and emotional, melancholy and somewhat creepy vocals sporting the inherited talents of mom and dad. Think the dark side of Roxette and a classical gothic Sheryl Crow. Stewart, a guitarist since age five, comes from a musical family. There’s a certain amount of pain and sorrow in Luttrell’s voice which she blends beautifully with power and emotional confidence.

New York’s Cilver, formally Me Talk Pretty, starts the tour with songs from their just released debut EP featuring In My Head with an appearance by GNR guitarist Bumblefoot. Lyrically it’s a sarcastic, hard-driving satirical look at fame and fortune and feeling the pressure for success. Loud voiced leather clad and tasseled singer, Romanian born Uliana Preotu took over the stage with rasp and attitude. Shimmying out of her jacket into blacker attire, she’s reminiscent of Flo with a more ‘progressive’ harder edge. The crowd claps along feeling the bass thump in their hearts. They have some of the glitter, dirt and grime that Guns n Roses made shine in their early years, and they’re taking their gutter dreams to the penthouse.

Eyes Set To Kill (Photo by Samantha Stewart Photography)

Eyes Set To Kill (Photo by Samantha Stewart Photography)

Started in Phoenix in 2003 by the Rodriguez sisters (Alexia on vocals, guitar and Anissa on bass), Eyes Set to Kill have been on the cover of USA Today as one of Alternative Press Magazine’s “100 Bands You Need To Know.” Through numerous member changes, their debut EP sold 11,000 units. Their first full length, Reach in 2008, hit No. 29 on Billboards Heatseakers chart and No. 77 on Billboards Independent Music charts. The World Outside came in 2009 along with an acoustic EP by Alexia, then Broken Frames in 2010. Alexia also released her first solo record Underground Sounds. They released White Lotus in 2011 in a joint venture with Maphia Entertainment on their own label Forsee Records; then signed with Century Media Records in 2012 currently supporting Masks.

They blast open the metal doors pounding the stage with feminine aggression and sound opening with the creepy baby-doll coo of Masks into the thud pummeler Killing in Your Name. Playing the Alrosa a few years back, Anissa plays chug bass bouncer Where I Want to Be. Alexia’s vocals are powerful, soulful with a nice amount of aggression and high peaks, an addictive mix of Crucified Barbara, Drain STH and Lita Ford.

Masks’ title comes from the number they had to wear to impress different people and after so many changes they’ve finally found their face, without the masks. Haze and another new tune Little Liar deals with doing bad shit and karma, it always comes back around. Alexia’s delivery and performance shows there’s some bubblegum in the bad girl. They end, infecting us all with the horror of Silent Hill.

Lacuna Coil (Photo by Samantha Stewart Photography)

Lacuna Coil (Photo by Samantha Stewart Photography)

Milan’s Lacuna Coil come to us with some Dark Adrenaline and Trip the Darkness with the crowd eager to oblige Cristina’s singing, come to me and follow me, follow me. Our second helping of dark energy comes to Kill the Light inside of us. Cristina Scabbia, dressed in bad fairly-tale stepmother black, twirled, dancing the stage, engaging the masses acting out each song with an enticing grim smile and her own touch of evil evanescence.  She seduced all with her enticing aura and piercing gilded glance. Lacuna’s male voice, Andrea Ferro, equally plays the mysterious warlock spellbinder.

Scabbia, a professional singer since 1991, is a lyricist and the feminine voice of reason and advice in Revolver Magazine. She’s been featured on Megadeth’s A Tout le Monde and Apocalyptica’s S.O.S. (Anything But Love) and an alternate version of Alter Bridge’s Watch Over You. Known for her dark haunting image and range, her highest note ever hit is said to be an A7. Scabbia performed a duet with Linea 77’s former singer Emiliano Audisio on the track “Beautiful Lie” for the soundtrack of the 2013 Italian film Passione Sinistra. She’s recorded seven records and two EP’s with LC.

We’re intoxicated in their presence. Whatever the Karmacode might be, we’re happy with our Fragments of Faith. Scabbia continues her interaction as our beloved wicked queen offers the musical poisoned apple to devour. The first new track from Broken Crown Halo, Die & Rise tells us to do so with no regrets. Shiny gothic power continues to flow into tomorrow if it comes. We’re Spellbound with a taste of the Shallow Life.  They’re living the dark side Upside Down and laughing at their disaster. We get hallo’ed again with Nothing Stands in our Way, a message to go after your dreams no matter what. They end giving everyone good karma from theirs to Our Truth.

Sick Puppies (Samantha Stewart Photography)

Sick Puppies (Samantha Stewart Photography)

Not all Aussies are sick puppies but fortunately for us, we get three that are. The Sick Puppies open with Die to Save You off the new CD. Half-way through we’re introduced to the angelic vocals of bassist/co-founder Emma Anzai. “You ready for this rock n roll show?” yells Shimon Moore. We’re all just walking Cancer, dressed up as life, searching for disaster, says their sophomore chapter of tunes. There’s no Going Back cause the past is in the past and it doesn’t last. Leave the memories behind like a desert illusion. The devil’s up to his old tricks already, and we’re only four songs in. He’s definitely an Odd One and Tri-Polar at that, adding a bit of rage to his pocket full of shells. Everyone’s got their own personal Riptide to ride and the water’s turbulent but fine. The next song went out to all the people back home from the teachers to the other kids that disrespected them and said they couldn’t do it. Now they send those people pics and texts of them rocking around the world. Welcome to My World, my beautiful nightmare and personal hell, they’re always Dressed Up as Life.

From the devil, to a darkened life we get an uplifting tale of the road to a new life on Maybe. Your Pitiful life’s worth more than an overdose because you think Nothing Really Matters.  Welcome to the Real World as Anzai the ‘Female Flea’ slaps and chisels the bass out of her onstage dance partner both in performance and her funky solo. Drummer Mark Goodwin also gets to shine on the sticks. It’s time for War as Moore instructed the crowd to put hands on the person in front of you, friend or stranger and start the biggest bounce pit in Columbus history. Jump up and down like you just got electrocuted by Blanka. From the mean streets of the fighting pits to the dusty old west, you never bring a knife to a Gunfight, you’ll lose! When they’re not shooting off or standing in front of tanks, they’re fighting or playing with Foo. ‘You have exactly 3 ½ minutes to go absolutely crazy in the pit.’ They end with their battle cry and You’re Going Down!

GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL Opens Exclusively at THE NEON

March 19, 2014 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

GrandBudapestHotel__140307021004-275x429Hello Everyone,

We’re very excited about this weekend. Wes Anderson’s new film has been breaking box office records across the country, and now THE NEON gets to have the local exclusive opening of THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. Many people in the Miami Valley have been eagerly anticipating this movie (including almost everyone at THE NEON), and we’re looking forward to our “Wes Anderson Fan Screening” on Thursday night at 8:00. March 19, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Jodi-Cobb-920-150x150As a photographer with National Geographic, JODI COBB has worked in more than 60 countries–celebrating the best of the human spirit and spotlighting some of its worst aspects. She is best known for lifting the curtain on worlds closed to outsiders, specializing in gaining access to places and situations that are off limits for most journalists. She was one of the first photographers to cross China when it reopened to the West, the first photographer to enter the hidden lives of women of Saudi Arabia for a landmark article in 1987, and the first woman to be named White House Photographer of the Year. For her book Geisha: The Life, the Voices, the Art, COBB entered another world closed to outsiders–the geisha of Japan. Her investigation of human trafficking, perhaps the ultimate hidden world, enabled her to expose this harsh reality to public consciousness in her 2003 story “21st Century Slavery.”

Her photographs have drawn acclaim at exhibitions around the world. She was featured in the PBS documentary On Assignment and has frequently appeared on NBC’s “Today Show.” She has also won several awards, including numerous National Press Photographers Association Pictures of the Year awards and World Press awards.

Michio Kaku Talks “Physics of the Future” For FREE Courtesy of WSU

March 17, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

michio_kaku

Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku will discuss “Physics of the Future” as part of Wright State’s Presidential Lecture Series and Honors Institute on March 19.

When he was in high school, Michio Kaku assembled a particle accelerator in his parents’ garage for a science fair project. Today, he is an internationally known theoretical physicist who has become a fixture in the media and helps popularize science for the masses.

Kaku will be Wright State University’s final Presidential Lecture Series speaker of the year, and the featured speaker of the 2014 Honors Institute, when he delivers a speech, “Physics of the Future,” at the Wright State Nutter Center on Wednesday, March 19, at 7 p.m. Kaku’s lecture is free and open to the public.

“He is very good at popularizing physics and getting people interested and excited about learning more,” said Jason Deibel, associate professor of physics. “He scales it down for people who don’t have professional training in physics and makes it real for them.”

Kaku, the Henry Semat Professor of Theoretical Physics at the City College of New York, is the co-founder of string theory, a major branch of theoretical physics. His goal is to complete Albert Einstein’s dream of a “theory of everything,” to derive an equation that will summarize all the physical laws of the universe.

Kaku has written several books about physics and related topics, including two New York Times bestsellers: Physics of the Impossible(2008) and Physics of the Future (2011). His latest book, The Future of the Mind: The Scientific Quest to Understand, Enhance and Empower the Mind, touches on topics such as telepathy, mind reading, photographing a dream and mentally controlled robots.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NbBjNiw4tk’]

The silver-maned Kaku (a figure skater who likes to throw his wife into the air) is also a familiar figure in the media. He has hosted TV specials for the BBC, The History Channel, Discovery Channel and Science Channel. He has also appeared on 60 Minutes, Nightline, 20/20 and a host of other programs.

Sam Sifton

The Honors Institute will also include a symposium and luncheon address by Sam Sifton, The New York Times national editor, on Thursday, March 20, at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room. Sifton’s talk, “The Future of Journalism,” is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required.

Sifton became national editor ofThe Times in 2011, after serving as the newspaper’s restaurant critic for two years. He joined the paper in 2002 as deputy dining editor and became dining editor later that year. In 2004, he was named deputy culture editor. Prior to joining The Times, Sifton was a senior writer and editor at Talk magazine; critic, reporter and managing editor of the New York Press; and a social studies teacher in New York City’s public schools. He is the author of Field Guide to the Yettie: Stalking the Dot-Com Geek.

His participation in the 2014 Honors Institute Symposium is courtesy of The New York Times in Education program sponsored at Wright State by First Year Programs, University College.

The symposium also includes discussion sessions on “Big Data and Smart Health care,” “Envisioning Flight in the Wright Brothers Era,” “The Future of Higher Education,” “Is Sustainability Possible?” and “Literary Visions of the Future.”

A couple of sublime moments at the ballet

March 16, 2014 By Rodney Veal Leave a Comment

1978894_10151888675020448_416275382_nWith the “Diversity in Dance” concert, Dayton Ballet highlighted what works well for this regional ballet company. Once again the tantalizing prospects for a full fledged renaissance  are on display.  From the work of legendary  choreographer and co-founder of the Joffrey Ballet to the rich and tantalizing movement construction of Susie Payne, This was a concert of bountiful returns.

I have to impress upon the Dayton  arts community what a rarity it is to see classical and or neoclassical ballet repertory being presented with a live orchestra. This symbiosis of elements adds a third contextual layer of interpretation and experience for the viewer. Having performed to live orchestration many times myself as a performer it changes how and what is being danced at the molecular level not to mention the spiritual. The fact that we got to see it in conjunction with the re-staging of a Gerald Arpino masterwork is worth the price of admission.

Dayton Ballet in Gerald Arpino’s Reflections. Photo Credit: Scott Kimmins

“Reflections” was a neoclassical master class in what is usually missing from present day choreographers, innate musicality and the ability to translate it into choreography. With it’s almost  Balanchine-like phrasing and musical weaving, The Dayton Ballet dancers accompanied by the Dayton Philharmonic under the masterful baton of Neil Gittleman kicked off this concert with a Joie de Vivre that was at once effervescent  and steely in design. In shades of gray and pink, the women and men weaved beautifully rendered lattice work of patterns and tableaus. with particular attention being payed to several playful, athletic  variations and Pas de Deux’s, most notably Abby Phillips and Evan Pitts, which left an indelible impression long after the bows.

The second work on the concert was “Dreams of Flight” by Dayton original,  Susanne Payne. This was a bravura choreographic work that showcased the incredible skills of the Dayton Ballet men. In her program notes she says the work was loosely inspired by “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coehlo and that it is rigorously athletic. The latter part was an understatement as the piece evolved and built to it’s rousing conclusion.  While Susanne was weaving her metaphoric choreographic alchemy, you could not help but be pulled into its intoxicating adrenaline-spiked power. This was a visceral, heart-stopping epic work that in lesser hands could have been maudlin and overwrought. “Dreams of Flight” tapped into layers of emotional, intellectual and spiritual connectivity wrapped up in a rich and utterly original movement vocabulary. It was in turns, playful and childlike, mature and insightful. While it was danced with athletic vigor and panache,  this  was a triumphant success for not only the dancers and the choreographer but also the company itself. I have always stated that when a dance company breaks out of routine and embraces the new and unexpected, we all walk away winners.

Have you purchased your copy of (DE-FI)ance Magazine yet? You can order your copy at http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/606271?__r=435971

A wise man once said, “The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change” and that’s one thing that those of us at the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC  has come to know, understand, adapt to, and appreciate!  After all without change things become boring, stagnant, and let’s face it predictable–all things that Fashion should never become!  So with that being said, the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC is excited to announce changes to our schedule of events for May!! 😀

Originally it was announced that we would be having our very first Fashion Week May 6-10, however after revisiting our ultimate goal and mission which is to provide support for area and independent designers and then reviewing our own availability from Models (most of whom are in school age and or in college during the week), our very own staff (all of which have day jobs and faced a few scheduling issues), a few participating designers(who were only available during the weekend), and of course one of our main events conflicted with one of the largest events in Downtown—URBAN NIGHTS!!  So after careful thought and consideration, it was decided that “(DE-FI)ance Fashion Week” should be consolidated into a weekend event and hence “A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance” was born!!

So without further ado, we are proud to announce the schedule for (DE-FI)ance Fashion Week which will kick off during the largest street party in Dayton—URBAN NIGHTS!!

A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance Kicks Off during Urban Nights May 9!!
