A Bevy of Wright State University Homecoming Festivities Sept. 29–Oct. 4.

homecoming-2013Wright State University invites students, alumni and friends to campus to participate in the 2014 Homecoming festivities Sept. 29–Oct. 4.

Wright State students will celebrate Homecoming with a week of activities that will conclude Saturday, Oct. 4, when alumni and friends return to campus.

Homecoming week officially begins on Monday, Sept. 29, with a Raider Homecoming kick off for all students beginning at noon in Student Union Atrium. The 2014 Homecoming royalty court will be announced and students may cast their vote for the 2014 Homecoming royalty.

Area alumni and friends are invited on Friday, Oct. 3, to attend the Homecoming Exclusive Jason Derulo Concert beginning at 8 p.m. at the Wright State University Nutter Center. Tickets may be purchased online through Ticketmaster.

The Wright State University Alumni Association will honor several distinguished alumni at the annual awards dinner Friday, Oct. 3.

On Saturday, Oct. 4, the Raider Homecoming Festival kicks off with the Student Alumni nearlynakedAssociation’s second annual Nearly Naked Mile, which starts at the Rinzler Pavilion. Participants are asked to bring clothes to donate to Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Participants will enjoy games and a DJ for the pre-run party. The run begins at 11 a.m. The Student Alumni Association will provide food and Nearly Naked Mile T-shirts after the event.

New this year! Be sure to stop by the Homecoming Festival at the Rinzler Pavilion on Oct. 4 starting at noon. Enjoy a variety of activities that the whole family can enjoy!

Introducing FilmDayton’s New Executive Director

The FilmDayton Board of Trustees introduce their new Executive Director,   Shelly Hulce

Ms. Hulce is studying in the Human Services Administration program at Antioch University Midwest with a background in communications, IT, allied health and municipal government administration. An active member of the Dayton music community, she is a directing board member of Southwestern Ohio Public Radio, hosts a weekly radio show on WSWO and is a contributing writer for DaytonMostMetro.com. As a radio producer, Hulce began her training at WYSO. Before her involvement in local radio, she was an independent video producer and was involved in Cincinnati 48HourFilm contest and the Ohio Film + Music Fest. Known to locals as “Gladgirl,” she created community building arts events such as Poster-Tastic, StorySlamm Dayton, promoted and represented many local rock artists and has written, produced and directed two successful local rock operas. With a heart for non-profits, she served as a directing member of the former Dayton Dirt Collective arts and music venue and was a long time employee of Hospice of Dayton. Hulce was most recently employed by the City of Dayton as Legislative Aide to Mayor Gary D. Leitzell.

Under the leadership of the new Director, FilmDayton will continue its established programming and support services of the local film community, while heightening the focus on economic development. As reported previously, FilmDayton was born out of the DaytonCREATE initiative nearly eight years ago, with intent of forming a regional film commission office.

Hulce will continue aggressive efforts to lead the organization to meet that goal.

A Dayton native, she continues to reside in the city with her husband and daughter.

Seeking The Greatest Bloody Mary in Dayton – The Bloody Mary Showdown

There is a reason people love brunch on the weekends. It is a nice, long, leisurely meal with friends and family. All of the best food options are there, from Eggs Benedict to thick burgers, Belgian waffles to savory paninis, every food option you can think of is available. To top it all off, it is perfectly acceptable to have a few cocktails with the meal, either as a way to kick off the day or to shake off the night before. Brunch is not a meal as much as it is an event, and one of the long running stars of brunch is the classic Bloody Mary. It is a hearty cocktail to anchor this event. Much like brunch it is delicious, flexible, and has benefits that go beyond the obvious.

The concept of a hearty, late morning meal started in Britain with hunters and traveled to the United States in the early 20th century. While Hollywood and New York had a role in popularizing a late morning meal, it was really Chicago where the idea of brunch in the U.S. caught on. Transcontinental flights were not popular yet, making trains the most convenient way to get from coast to coast. Chicago was where you stopped in between on the long journey to refresh and relax for a little while. Movie stars and business men stopped and enjoyed this mid-morning meal. The iconic Pump Room was one of the big players in the early days of the brunch movement, hosting many of the stars of the day. As the new meal built steam over the decades, it became a substitute for Sunday dinner as women entered the workplace. They had to get ready for Monday morning too, and wanted some time on Sunday night to rest. Brunch became a social ritual to replace that dinner.

Bloody Mary

Finished! A spicy and delicious brunch treat. It looks like it is missing something…

Brunch is a blend of breakfast and lunch, coined by Guy Beringer in Hunter’s Weekly, a short lived hunting magazine.  Fruit juice is just good is popular to have with breakfast, and society deems lunch as a fine time to start drinking lighter beverages like wines and beers. If you are going to combine the two meals, why not start combining their drinks! It makes a mimosa or a Bellini a perfect selection for a brunch treat. They add a little bit of fruit juice (or puree) to the traditional wine the British drank with their brunches. Those were well known cocktails in the 1940’s and 50’s, when brunch was becoming better known in society, but not as popular as a new star on the scene: The Bloody Mary. The fruit-juice-and-alcohol combination is there, but the proportions are flipped. That is not just good for a brunch cocktail, it is good for a hungover brunch patron.

Despite any debates, the tomato is a fruit. Tomatoes are an excellent way to fight a hangover as well. When you are hungover, you are dehydrated and hurting for vitamins. You liver is unhappy because it is busy trying to get glucose to the brain, but first it has to get rid of all the toxins you just put in your body. Tomato juice to the rescue! Tomatoes help in the rehydration process, considering they are mainly water. Being hydrated helps the body process what happened after you hit the third bar and thought shots were a good idea.  They also add sugar back to the body, helping replenish the glucose stores the liver has been burning through. If you believe a little hair of the dog helps the next day, the low levels of vodka in the drink can will help tame the bite. There is a little something of everything in a Bloody Mary.

Everyone has the best Bloody Mary. Everyone. At least, that is what they are going to tell you when they ask. The concept behind the cocktail is simple: tomato juice with a kick. The liquor is there to showcase the flavors you are building in some way. The spirit can be able to enhance the flavors you are adding to the juice, or is a blank canvas that gives some punch at the end. In this modern world, the range of what you can do with the tomato juice is boundless. As food culture expands to find new dishes and spices from every corner of the world, they are all ending up as experimental ingredients in a Bloody Mary. A Chicago style hot dog Bloody Mary? Maybe one inspired by the favors of the Mediterranean Ocean? Maybe some other fruits in your Bloody Mary mix? The possibilities are endless. And then there are the garnishes. Everything from a simple celery stick or olives to, well, this. The Bloody Mary is open to interpretation. And that is something to be celebrated.

And celebrate it we will! On October 11, join Dayton Most Metro, Lion and Panda, and somebloodyMaryPoster.v2-03 of the best bartenders in the city for a Bloody Mary Showdown at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. From 11am to 2pm, our mixologist contestants will be preparing their most unique versions of this brunch staple for you to sample. Brunch itself will be provided by Chef Matt Hayden and Meals from Scratch. The spirited base will be provided by American Harvest vodka, who is sponsoring Masqerage. Proceeds will go to help ARC Ohio and their fight to educate people on HIV, and provide help to those wrestling with it. It is open to everyone to show off their talents in adding the right blend of spices to make the perfectly balanced Bloody Mary. Sleep in a few hours on Saturday, then enjoy a delicious meal with the people that are close to you. Or come in and find a cure for the common hangover. Either way, we look forward to seeing to there!

Shop Owners Plan Grand Openings On October’s First Friday

• Ambition Magazine, 131 N. Ludlow St., Suite 319 (Talbott Tower): Ambition Magazine is an all-encompassing magazine for the young, urban professional. In addition to being the he10546978_696149917100282_522884039927496369_oadquarters of the magazine, the offices will be used for meetings, events, and weekend training sessions on building websites to help young entrepreneurs develop a web presence at a reasonable cost.

• Scavenger, 31 S. St. Clair St. (St. Clair Lofts): If you are looking for something unique and different then you don’t need to scavenge other cities to do so. Scavenger sells everything from timeless vintage to rugged American handcrafted jewelry, accessories, home décor and apparel. In addition to designing their own products, Scavenger has uncovered an eclectic collection of items from the local area and abroad that will be available in their store.

The new shops are part of the seventh phase of the Pop-Up Project, part of an initiative to fill downtown storefronts called Activated Spaces. This program builds success of the first six phases of the Pop-Up Project, launched in November 2011, to provide potential business owners the opportunity for shorter leases at below-market rates as a way for them to jump-start their businesses and contribute to the vibrancy of downtown Dayton. Since it was started, the project has launched 16 shops (12 of which are still open), filled around 13,000 square feet of previously vacant space and created 29 jobs. Unique to this round of Pop-Up Shops is Ambition Magazine, which is the second Pop-Up Office Space project. “The Pop-Up Shop program was so successful for the retail shops that we are quickly running out of move-in-ready, street-level spaces,” explained Pop-Up project leader, Elise Huelskamp. “Now we are including vacant, move-in-ready office space in downtown Dayton. We’re confident Activated Spaces can showcase the available amenities and potential for business owners to thrive downtown alongside hundreds of other businesses.”

Fifth St.; Peace on Fifth, 234 Dutoit St.; Green Baby, now located at the 2nd Street Market; two stores at 16 Brown St., Spice Paradise and Hicks’ Barber Shop & Shave Parlor, Catapult Creative, 133 N Ludlow St.; Confetti, 42 W. Fifth St. In addition, two shops have expanded to new locations at least twice the size of their original Pop-Up Shop locations: American π, 41 S. St. Clair St., andSew Dayton, 261 Wayne Ave.

 

The Pop-Up Project is driven by volunteers from the young professional organizations Generation Daytonand UpDayton with support from the Downtown Dayton Partnership, the City of Dayton, the City of Dayton Neighborhood Mini-Grant program and community volunteers. University Row and the Salem Avenue Festival of Neighborhoods

100_8347Some neighborhoods everyone knows, and some are less familiar, but very important to the history of Dayton. As a Realtor, for better or worse, we are limited to the kind of information we can give our clients about what it’s like to live  in a neighborhood. The reasons for this are simple- for one thing, we might not have any real experience living in a neighborhood so our information comes second hand- not always the best source. Plus what we might think of as either unacceptable or perfect in a neighborhood, might be completely different from what you are looking for so if you can talk to the neighbors themselves, that’s the best way to get the skinny on whether a neighborhood meets your needs. Today is your chance to visit a beautiful historic neighborhood and mingle with the residents of several local neighborhoods to find out first hand what they are all about. Today is the 3rd Annual Salem Avenue Festival of Neighborhoods. Nine neighborhoods along the Salem Corridor are joining together to celebrate their past, present, and future with food, music, and tours including a tour of the historic Grace Church and a walking tour of University Row.

Parking spaces around the globe to be temporarily reclaimed for people

poster2012_hostedbyIn cities around the globe today, artists, activists and citizens will temporarily transform metered parking spaces into public parks and other social spaces, as part of an annual event called “PARK(ing) Day.”

Originally invented in 2005 by Rebar, a San Francisco-based art and design studio, PARK(ing) Day challenges people to rethink the way streets are used and reinforces the need for broad-based changes to urban infrastructure. “In urban centers around the world, inexpensive curbside parking results in increased traffic, wasted fuel and more pollution,” says Rebar’s Matthew Passmore. “The planning strategies that generated these conditions are not sustainable, nor do they promote a healthy, vibrant human habitat. PARK(ing) Day is about re-imagining the possibilities of the urban landscape.

This year Garden Station’s Project Manager, Lisa Helm, has has coordinated a park  in front of Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District; and Architect, Matt Sauer has coordinated a park by the local chapter of American Institute of Architects on Main Street by Courthouse Square.  MetroParks is loaning plants for the day and Green Velvet Sod Farms has donated sod, which will end up at Garden Station. The Oregon District PARK(ing) Day park will have programming throughout the day including kids activities and concerts. This is the sixth year Dayton will participate in the event, which promotes green space for people over space for cars. Ironically, there is some question whether the City of Dayton will keep Garden Station as a park or let it be developed into commercial buildings or parking space.

New Owner Breathes Life Into Dog’s Breath Tavern

Been chasing your tail looking for a good watering hole?

New things are happening under the woof, err. roof at Dog’s Breath Tavern on Whipp Road in Kettering.  New owner Gary Leasure has already set some of his vision in motion.  Keeping with the dog theme, he has revamped the menu and promises even more improvements and innovations.

As for drinks, he is focusing on having beer available from every Dayton Brewery.  You could literally do a brew tour without leaving your bar stool.  He is working out distribution with some of the breweries, and has some Dayton beers on tap already.  Right now they have Toxic, Warped Wing, and Yellow Springs Brewery beer on draught.  Dog’s Breath will feature Ohio Breweries on tap as well.  Click HERE for full beer list.

Gary has owned bars before and he hopes to use his experience to make some big changes.  Some things to look for are pool leagues, dart leagues, karaoke,  NFL game specials, new HD TV’s, and bands every week.  The huge restaurant provides a great venue for live music, and a fun atmosphere for watching sports.  Unofficially, one area could be called the “Dawg Pound” and another the “Jungle.”

— THE DOUBLE BUTTER BURGER: 2 burgers and a mountain of a sandwich.  Here’s the secret: before they cook the burgers on the tabletop fryer, they slap each side with some butter.  You can taste the difference. And cheesey?  OMG they put a ton of American cheese on this one to hold it all together.  Top it how you want it and go town like a hungry Rottweiler.

Honorable Mention: The Buffalo Wings aren’t bad, and go great with a local beer.

The owner promises even more good things to come.  Look for the menu and kitchen to expand, and for some more unique food items and local beers.

So don’t bark, just take some bites at Dog’s Breath Tavern soon.  It is a heck of a place to enjoy some adult beverages, watch some football, shoot pool or take in a live band.  We won’t “hound” you any more.

New Beer Garden at Oktoberfest

adult ice cream truckOur friends at Cavalier Distributing supply some of the most delicious craft beer around town.  You may have seen them at the monthly beer tasting at Trolley Stop, where they are often helping pour beer and kindly sharing their knowledge about ales, porters, stouts and the newest trends in craft brewing.

So when they shared with us that they will have their very cool draft truck in the new beer garden at DAI’s Oktoberfest, Friday, Sept. 25th – Sunday, Spet. 27th, we got very excited!  Cavalier is even making it possible for a couple of our readers to attend the Friday night preview party.  Check our Most Metro Facebook page for a chance to share your way to a pair of tickets for the VIP preview.

Here’s what will be on tap:

 

Revolution Oktoberfest -A classic German-style Oktoberfest beer that goes down smooth with a pleasant, toasty malt flavor. Hallertauer Mittelfruh hops give the beer a crisp, balanced bitterness and a spicy, earthy aroma

Reissdorf Kolsch – a minty, hop aroma; sweet, vanilla like, malt flavors; and a crisp, dry, cedar finish.  medium in color, slightly hoppy, has an ABV of 4.8%

Stone Go To IPA– an abundance of lupulin-borne bitterness into a “session” IPA delivering all the fruity, piney character of a much bigger IPA.

Jackie O’s Mystic Mama- Columbus and Warrior hops lend an assertive bitterness. Amarillo, Simcoe, and Centennial hops give this beer tons of great flavors of grapefruit, tangerines, and pine needles. beers on tap

Wyders Reposado – Pear cider infused with smooth subtle oak laden tequila notes. Refreshing pear cider crafted with some inspiration from south of the border.

Fat Head’s Bumbleberry – a light, refreshing ale with a nice blueberry aroma, crackery malt flavors, a hint of sweetness and a refreshing blueberry finish.

Madtree Pyschopathy -subtle malt backbone combats the bitterness and intensity of floral, grassy and citrus hop flavors.

Madtree PumpCAN – Really nice big pumpkin aroma, nice and hearty, with a balanced amount of spice. Spice does not overwhelm the pumpkin, it’s still allowed to shine here.

Schofferhoffer Grapefruit – unique combination of sparkling smooth Schofferhofer Hefeweizen with grapefruit flavoring. A refreshing well-rounded taste with tangy character and hints of sweetness.

Weihenstephan Original – yellow bright lager,  a flavorful beer with a mild hoppy note and a pleasant fresh spicy taste.

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale – a unique sipping beer with the distinctive nose of a well-crafted bourbon. Aged for at least 6  weeks in freshly decanted bourbon barrels from some of Kentucky’s finest distilleries.

Breckenridge Vanilla Porter – An ale that has all the chocolate and roasted nut flavor of a classic Porter, with an enigmatic surprise thrown in for good measure, real vanilla bean.

Ohio Fish and Shrimp Festival Celebrates 13th Year

Freshwater Farms in Urbana Ohio plays host this weekend to the 13th annual Ohio Fish & Shrimp Festival.  Festivities kick off Friday evening with live music, mouth-watering seafood selections from theFreshwater Farms food booth as well a variety of food options from other vendors, games and activities for the whole family. There will be freshly harvested shrimp from multiple farmers for sale beginning Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. HURRY – They typically sell out early!

Now a three day event, the festival was originally one day only, held in the streets of downtown Urbana on a Saturday. The streets were blocked off and filled with displays of live fish, street-crossing fountains, games, vendors and live music. The festival crowds grew each year and so did the need for a larger venue. In 2005, the festival was moved to Freshwater Farms of Ohio, one mile north of Urbana, where it’s still held today.

Enjoy extensive displays of live fish, frogs, turtles and other native critters. Swing by the fish farm market for a taste of  gourmet smoked trout products. Join in on the Trout Feeding Frenzy, sand castle play zone & treasure dig, and the famous sturgeon petting zoo, where you can pet Ohio’s largest native fish. The music lineup includes rock, folk and reggae! The music and the atmosphere are suitable for all ages.  Tables & chairs are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own lawn chair or blankets.

Shrimp Peeling and Eating Contest

2:30 pm on Saturday, September 20th
Location: Main Stage

Contestants battle it out to see who can peel and eat their plate of freshwater shrimp the fastest. This contest only
takes place once during the festival. So, bring your appetite and be prepared to stuff yourself! Winner will receive a $50
cash prize. Limit 25 participants. Register at the festival information booth. Fee is $5 per contestant.

Freshwater Farms raises freshwater shrimp in local ponds. Shrimp… in Ohio? That’s right! Because these shrimp can only survive in warm water, they need to be harvested before the weather turns colder. There’s no way they would be able to survive a harsh Ohio winter. Shrimp are put into the ponds in June and harvested during the third week in September. Freshwater shrimp are comparable to “fresh-off-the-boat” saltwater shrimp and have a firm, juicy texture. They are also an excellent source of high-quality protein and are low in fat. Freshwater Farms’ shrimp are raised in clean, chemical-free waters, resulting in a healthier product that is locally grown. The week of the festival is the only week of the year that fresh shrimp is available for purchase.

 

Freshwater Farms of Ohio is the state’s largest indoor fish hatchery, raising up to 100,000 pounds of fish yearly. The farm raises rainbow trout, largemouth bass, yellow perch, bluegill, channel catfish, fathead minnows, goldfish and koi. The fish are raised both indoors and outdoors and are available for stocking or as processed products. A century-old barn has been converted into a retail store that sells fresh rainbow trout fillets, popular smoked trout fillets and spreads, Ohio-grown products such as maple syrup and cheese. A wide variety of pond and water garden supplies, fountains, equipment and feeds are also available. Explore the farm during the festival to view numerous displays of live fish and other aquatic animals, learn about aquaculture, pet the endangered sturgeon, feed our trout and shop the retail store.

If this parking lot happens to fills up, there is overflow parking available in another field just south of the  property and along Highway 68.  As a courtesy to our festival guests, they will have golf carts in the parking lot to help you get to and from your car.

WYSO Updates Programming Schedule

Neenah Ellis, general manager of public radio station 91.3 WYSO in Yellow Springs, has announced several changes to its programming line-up designed to refresh, update and energize the station’s sound. “Programming a public radio station is a balancing act taking into account financial sustainability while maintaining our distinctive voice,” said Ellis. “We want to keep a good balance between local and national sources, between news and entertainment. We want to satisfy our long-time listeners and attract and new audience members.”

 
As part of the news-related programming and scheduling changes, WYSO will add a two-hour call-in show called On Point, produced by public radio member station WBUR in Boston. On Point will air weekdays at 10:00 am beginning Monday, September 29, 2014. The addition of On Point, hosted by long-time journalist Tom Ashbrook, will onpointfulfill a strong demand from listeners for news-related talk programming in that time slot, according to Ellis. “Listeners have been telling me for years about their desire for this kind of programming during the day. The results of the listener survey we conducted this summer confirm this. This was the single most requested programming change we heard from our listeners,” Ellis said. Nearly nine hundred people took the on-line listener survey, says Ellis.

 
Excursions, hosted by long-time WYSO Music Director Niki Dakota, will begin at noon and run until 3:00 pm. Changes will also occur on Saturday afternoon from 1- 5 pm beginning on October 4, where a succession of new programs will be introduced. On Saturday afternoons at 1:00pm WYSO will carry Studio360 from WNYC in New York, a cultural magazine program hosted by mothradiohr-webKurt Andersen, followed by the storytelling program The Moth Radio Hour, The Ted Radio Hour from NPR, based on “Ted Talks,” and On The Media hosted by Bob Garfield and Brooke Gladstone, which WYSO has previously aired in another timeslot.

“We know that our listeners are highly engaged and studies demonstrate that, across the board, the most popular programs on public radio are those that engage listeners through content that is both informational and entertaining on topics that are meaningful and relevant; all new programs do just that,” said Ellis.

Norm Whitman retires after 30 years

Moving off the schedule will be Detours, a folk music program hosted by local musician Norm Whitman, who is retiring after more than thirty years as a WYSO music volunteer. Dear, Green Place hosted by Cindy Funk will move to 6pm on Saturday evening. “We can’t thank Norm Whitman enough for his years of loyal dedication to folk music and we know his listeners will
miss him dearly,” Ellis said. “He has created a program from week to week with his whole heart and soul. Luckily, he has agreed to appear from time to time on Excursions to lend his expertise and great sense of humor to our airwaves.”

“The programs we’re adding are excellent – chosen with Miami Valley listeners in mind – to keep WYSO relevant, fresh and strong,” Ellis said. “While we know some people will be disappointed that their favorite programs are going away, we encourage them to experience the strong new line-up new that offers the kind of content that attracts listeners to public radio in the first place.”

Multiple factors were taken into consideration in WYSO’s programming decision:

Ongoing listener feedback to the staff & volunteers during face-to-face conversations at events, via email, phone calls & regular mail
Data-gathering tools which measure listening habits like Arbitron and WYSO’s own listener survey
Listening trends in public radio across the country
Listener feedback during fund drives
