The Fiat 500 Family

Walking in the showroom of the 2015 Dayton Auto Show, vehicles of every color, contour, make, model and style greet your eye. From American made to European imports, there is a vehicle for everyone at this year’s Dayton Auto Show.

Vehicles were arranged by manufacturer and dealer, with counters offering informative literature and spokespeople willing to share the latest and greatest about the newest models. The smell of car polish and new rubber are a pleasant and welcome aroma, enticing the viewer to step closer and peer into each of the gleaming cars, trucks, vans, coupes, hot hatchbacks, SUVs and sedans. Dealers are showcasing new products are reintroducing models that have been improved over the years.

The overall feeling is one of too much eye candy initially, then as you move through the showroom and stop to view each vehicle, it settles down and the excitement builds as you move from vehicle to vehicle.

Bryan Vanover of Voss Cadillac offered his views on why Cadillac decided to deliver a fresh, new look for their booth this year: “Well, I think they did because they know the Dayton market is a strong market for Cadillac. You know the two stores that are here locally are strong stores, you know, they support Cadillac very well and they, I think, looked at it and said we need to be back in Dayton.”

When asked what new and exciting products viewers should look out for this year from Cadillac, Bryan stated: “Well, with Cadillac, a lot of the exciting things we have the new 2015 Escalade, all new, redesigned. We have two other models, the 2014 and 15 CTS, that was Motor Trend Car of the Year and our ATS was 2013 North American Car of the Year. So we have a lot of exciting product, we have a new ATS coupe that’s out that we’re excited about, so, like I said, a good time to be with Cadillac.”

Al Verscheure from Productions Plus, a subcontractor of General Motors, was asked what was his role here at the 2015 Dayton Auto Show. He commented that his role is “to inform people of the new products, typically as a display lead I’ll come in a day before and we’ll help do the car placements, set ups, fuses, things of that nature.”

When asked what is new for General Motors Al stated that “Probably this time around the main thing that we would be probably focusing on would be the Canyon, it’s the newest to our mix. It comes out this year, it took a two year hiatus while they moved the plant to Wentzville, and now it’s just coming back, completely redone from the ground up, so essentially it’s not the same truck that it used to be.”

New tech is always appreciated and the 2014 BMW i3 does not disappoint. Fully electric, it offers powerful performance with perfected handling. Panoramic views bring the outside in, which makes this sustainable vehicle a guilt-free, fun to drive experience.

Oscar Nominee TIMBUKTU Opens & FREE Oscar Party Details at THE NEON!

February 19, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

TIMBUKTU-newposter-Oscarnom_{d5704ff5-075b-e411-9d0b-d4ae527c3b65}_smHello Everyone,

The response to STILL ALICE was really terrific this weekend. Most customers agree that Julianne Moore’s performance is honest and beautifully done…and that she will deserve the Academy Award this Sunday. STILL ALICE will stick around, and on Friday, we will open a contender for this year’s “Best Foreign Film” Oscar – TIMBUKTU – the first time a film from Mauritania has ever received a nomination.  The last day for TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT will be Thursday, Feb. 19.  MR. TURNER is slated to open on Feb. 27 and THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL is set to open on March 6!

Synopsis for TIMBUKTU: Currently rated 98% Fresh on Rottentomatoes.com, this stunning film is as important as it is beautiful. “Not far from the ancient Malian city of Timbuktu, now ruled by the religious fundamentalists, proud cattle herder Kidane lives peacefully in the dunes with his wife Satima, his daughter Toya, and Issan, their twelve-year-old shepherd. In town, the people suffer, powerless, from the regime of terror imposed by the Jihadists determined to control their faith. Music, laughter, cigarettes, even soccer have been banned. The women have become shadows but resist with dignity. Every day, the new improvised courts issue tragic and absurd sentences. Kidane and his family are being spared the chaos that prevails in Timbuktu. But their destiny changes abruptly in this stunningly rendered film from a master of world cinema.” (taken from Cohen Media) Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal wrote, “If Timbuktu – a nominee for this year’s foreign-film Oscar – were politically astute and nothing more, it would still serve a valuable purpose. But the film throbs with humanity, and abounds in extraordinary images.” Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Many thanks to the Alzheimer’s Association for their help in spreading the word about our engagement of STILL ALICE. “More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s and the the signs of Alzheimer’s are often dismissed as typical aging. Memory loss that disrupts daily life is not normal – it’s one of the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease. If identified, these signs should be taken seriously and a doctor should be consulted. Early detection is important so that individuals and families can seek possible treatments that may provide relief from symptoms and allow more time to plan for the future. The Alzheimer’s Association Miami Valley Chapter is here to help! You can contact their 24/7 Helpline at 800.272.3900 or alz.org/dayton.” (The Alzheimer’s Association has literature available in THE NEON’s lobby during our run of STILL ALICE.)

“The Junior Leaguers Club of Dayton will sponsor a special screening of DEAR WHITE PEOPLE on Feb. 28, 2015 at noon. DEAR WHITE PEOPLE is a 2014 American satirical film written and directed by Justin Simien. The film focuses on African American students who attend a predominately white university. This is the fourth annual movie sponsored by the Junior Leaguers of Dayton as a fundraiser for scholarships. The film will be followed by a community discussion led by Jeannette Taylor, program coordinator for NCCJ. The cost is $30 per ticket which includes the cost of movie, soda, a glass of wine, popcorn and the discussion.” (Taken from event press notes.) Tickets can now be purchased at THE NEON’s box office.

The Oscars are this Sunday, and you’re invited to our Annual FREE Oscar Party! Oscar ballots and details are now available in our lobby. Many thanks to the folks at ThinkTV for agreeing to help us get a broadcast signal for the event! Additional thanks to our friends at Square One Salon & Spa for donating a special gift for our grand prize of the night!

The ReelAbilities Film Festival is happening at numerous venues around Cincinnati, but one special screening is coming to Dayton on Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30 – ON BEAUTY. “Rick Guidotti, who after 15 years of working for clients such as Yves Saint Laurent, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar, grew tired of seeing the same ideal of beauty ‘spit up at us constantly.’ In a moment of serendipity, Rick walked by a young woman with Albinism at a New York City bus stop, and wondered why she wasn’t considered beautiful in his other world. This exploration resulted in a show-stopping magazine spread for Life Magazine called ‘Redefining Beauty.’ The Cincinnati ReelAbilities Film Festival, organized by LADD and presented by Macy’s, is our region’s largest film festival celebrating the stories, lives and art of people who experience disability; all of the film screenings benefit local nonprofit organizations.” For more information or to order advanced tickets, click this LINK to the official site.

On Sunday, March 8 at 3:20 (Please Note – the date in last week’s newsletter was incorrect!), Taller Trees Productions will premiere THE FALL LEAGUE – a locally produced documentary about seniors, softball and life. “This heart-warming documentary captures the story of a Dayton senior league (all players are over age 63), but it goes much further, exploring the impact of the sport in regard to family relationships, the bonding and camaraderie between players, and topics of aging that are necessary considerations for active seniors…the movie has been accepted for the Indy Sports Film Fest Experience in Toronto…and Louisvilles’ International Festival of Film.” (taken from press notes) To read more about the film and its production and to view the trailer, visit the film’s official site by clicking this LINK. Tickets, just $7 each, will be available at THE NEON’s box office beginning this weekend. Many people involved with the production of the film will attend the screening.

“On Sunday, March 15 at 3:00, The Turkish American Society is proud to present a special, one-time screening of director Hasan Kiraç’s TWO HEARTS AS ONE (Birlesen Gönüller). This powerful film – one of the most expensive productions in Turkish film history – is based on a true story. Starting in 1940’s Soviet Russia, and continuing into 1990’s, this is the story of four hearts which couldn’t be stopped by distances and years. Newlyweds Niyaz and Cennet are forced to separate when war rears a violent and chaotic head. Niyaz is taken to Red Army to fight on the Soviet side, while Cennet is sent to a camp when the Nazis took over their village…Woven into the narrative is the story of Yunus and Dilek, a loving couple from Turkey who leave for Almaty, then the capital of Kazakhstan, in the 1990’s. Ambitious Yunus is planning to build a school, but he has no resources at all. His wife Dilek sympathizes and supports him, but their enduring poverty wears her patience and resolve – until a chance encounter provides some much-needed perspective. Tickets for this special event are $10 and will be available on the day of the event (to purchase tickets in advance, visit The Turkish American Society – 2601 East Fourth Street). Presented in Turkish, with English subtitles.” (Taken from press notes)

Food Adventure Scoop: Our Fave Olive Oil Store Coming to Austin Landing!

February 19, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

“The Spicy Olive” carries the highest quality of Olive Oils and Vinegars!

Finally, we can let out a secret we have been dying to share with our fellow foodies for months!  One of our favorite shops is tentatively set to open at Austin Landing in May, 2015.  It is called The Spicy Olive and can satisfy any pallet of needs! This unique tasting emporium carries a large variety of specialty olive oils and balsamic vinegars that are of the utmost quality! And yes, you’ll get to taste them all!  Looking to amp up the flavors in your kitchen? Need to find your favorite cook a gift? Want a fun place for a foodie date? Look no further than The Spicy Olive !

The Food Adventures Crew appreciates not only great places to go out and eat, but also places that will bring the flavors of high end dining right into your own kitchen! And dear foodie friends, this place does just that!  For the past couple of years we have been heading down 75 south to the town of West Chester, and using Spicy Olive’s products.  Hungry Jax introduced the rest of the Food Adventure Crew and we were hooked !

As you all know, we typically feature Dayton foodstuffs.  So, when we found out they were coming to the Gem City, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to highlight this unique and delicious shopping experience! There are so many incredible oils and vinegars to sample.  Rest assured, your Food Adventures Crew tried them ALL! And you’ll find a decent stock pile of them in our own home kitchens at any given time!

Melanie Cedargren, owner and founder of The Spicy Olive

Melanie Cedargren, owner and founder of The Spicy Olive

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

—While eating her way through culinary masterpieces on her travels to Italy, owner and founder, Melanie Cedargren fell in love with the rich and pure quality of FRESH olive oil. So much so that she was inspired to bring back this freshness and superb taste. And we are SO glad that she did! In September of 2012, her dream came true and she opened her first store. It is a unique shop that allows you to taste and combine any and all of the oils and vinegars offered.

— Cedargren and her staff (many of whom started as loyal customers), run two stores south of our Gem city: one located in West Chester (7671 Cox Lane, West Chester, OH 45069) and the other in Cincinnati’s Hyde Park (2736 Erie Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45208).  The third store will be at Austin Landing, and Food Adventures is the first to spill the beans on this new location! At each store, you will find around 20 different olive oils and specialty oils along with 30 balsamic vinegars! But you won’t get overwhelmed with options, because the staff has made it easy for you to combine flavors and even provide recipe cards to help you create culinary masterpieces!

— The Spicy Olive, prides itself on the fact that their oils are purchased using a “bi-hemispheric” model, ensuring that the freshest oils are purchased during peak seasons. These oils travel from Italy, Greece, Spain, South Africa, Brazil and many other places all depending on when their peak season is. The balsamic vinegars are all aged 12-18 years and are imported from Modena, Italy!  These oils and vinegars are then infused by their supplier, Veronica Foods Co. in California. The Spicy Olive is different from chain olive oil shops as they (and their supplier) pride themselves on not being a franchise, allowing them to keep their business more personable and their products of highest quality.

Each bottle is filled for you right on the spot!

— Bottles are filled on the spot for you and run anywhere from $11-$25.  Also sold are specialty olives, jams and spices from local vendors! Need a gift? Here you’ll find gift baskets as well fun pasta and serving dishes. At the West Chester store you can also purchase fine wines from “UnCorked at The Spicy Olive”, ran by Scott Hau, located in the back of the store. Also offered are cooking classes with local chefs! And if that wasn’t enough, they have started a cosmetic line that is based with their pure olive oil and fragranced with essential oils! These products are also all natural.

Like we said, we literally have tried every oil and vinegar in this store.  We have compiled a list of our favorites.  They are a list of what we feel are the best flavors, and best successes we had, when cooking at home with these products.

The list is big, but they are all MUST EATS !

MUST EATS:

BUTTER OLIVE OIL: Yes, you read that right. The world of butter and olive oil have united and created something that you can indulge in without feeling the guilt! Hungry Jax frequently uses this on homemade popcorn for a healthy alternative! It’s also great for roasting vegetables!

VERMONT MAPLE BALSAMIC VINEGAR: Your mouth will be very happy to taste this one! The sweet, but not over powering flavor of the real maple syrup dances deliciously with the balsamic vinegar creating a product that you can drizzle on chicken, salads, fruit and so much more!

TUSCAN HERB OLIVE OIL: This is one of their top sellers! And it’s not secret as to why. The flavor combinations of  the herbs infused of oregano, rosemary, sage and garlic provide a complete package to toss this with some pasta and top with fresh Parmesan cheese! Or you can just grab hunk of crusty bread and dip away! Again, the possibilities are endless!

Oooooo shiny!

Proper storage ensures that light and temperature do not decrease the quality of the products!

ESPRESSO BALSAMIC VINEGAR: Who knew that coffee and vinegar could work? Well it does. Try making your self a glaze to top off a steak with this one! Spicy Olive suggests pairing this with the Blood Orange Olive Oil for a flavorful pork marinade!

BLOOD ORANGE OLIVE OIL:  Another big seller! There is no mistaking the citrus zip that this oil has! This oil is infused with REAL orange. Replace the oil in your favorite brownie recipe with this!

HARISSA OLIVE OIL: Like spice? Well this oil will help kick up the heat in any dish you serve it! Roasted chili peppers, cumin, garlic, cinnamon and caraway are flavors that pack this oil with it’s flavorful punch!

TOASTED SESAME SEED OIL: This is like no other sesame seed oil that you have tasted. Go out and buy a wok. Trust us, you’ll want to stir fry everything in this oil!  The Big Ragu had struggled for years, but was never able to get that”Chinese Restaurant” taste to his stir fry dishes.  This product finally solved his problem, and the aroma in the house is like Chinatown!

STRAWBERRY BALSAMIC VINEGAR: Vinegar on dessert? Yup. It works. Drizzle this beauty on top of your strawberry shortcake and you’ve just wowed your guests with a layer of unexpected flavor.

Cheddar Popcorn

Homemade Cheddar Popcorn

SICILIAN LEMON WHITE BALSAMIC VINEGAR:  One of the Big Ragu’s favorites.  Use this when pan searing calamari, shrimp and scallops.  We have had great success cooking with this vinegar, but it makes a great salad dressing when mixed with olive oil !  We eat in on spinach salad most!

FROG JAM: Figs, Raspberries, Oranges and Ginger make up the flavors of this jam.  On toast or on crackers, it will make your morning shine.  you will never think of the word “frog” the same way again!

Honorable Mention:  The Cilantro and Roasted Onion Olive Oil is fantastic with seafood.  So is the Milanese Gremolata Olive Oil with its garlic, lemon and mint flavors from Italy.

We can go on and on with all the flavors they offer!  Garlic, Wild Dill,  Basil are just a few more of the olive oils. The gourmet line of oils include Truffle Oils, Sesame, Almond and Walnut. Ever try Lavender Balsamic Vinegar? Well here you can! What about Mango? Dark Chocolate? Blueberry?

Can’t wait until the Austin Landing opening in May? Then head on down to one of their Cincy locations today and check it out! Melanie and her staff are ready to take you on a culinary journey that will have you coming back for more!  Explore, because your kitchen will never be the same again.

The Spicy Olives products are high quality because they supervise how, when and where the olives are pressed, to the flavors they are infused with, and even down to the proper way to store them. The Spicy Olive elevates olive oil and vinegar to create superb dishes beyond your salad bowl!  Don’t miss stopping into this store in the future.  your kitchen will never be the same.  Olive this place, well …we all do!

Please check out our photo gallery below of The Spicy Olive’s products and how we put them to use!

Call For Art that Shows Where the Water Flows!

February 19, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

image001The Department of Water is kicking off a new storm water education program called Storm Drain Artscapes: Art that Shows Where the Water Flows!

Local artists can help the Department of Water spread the stormwater message that “When It Rains, Dayton Drains!” as a visual reminder that storm drains lead directly to our rivers. We are now seeking artists to submit designs for the 2015 Storm Drain Artscapes project.

Artists have until March 25th to submit a design concept. A review panel will select designs from those submitted and contact artists by April 17th.

Please share this Call for Artists with any individuals, schools, or organizations that you feel might be interested. If you have questions, feel free to contact me directly.

What is Storm Drain Art?

The City of Dayton’s Storm Drain Artscapes project highlights the importance of local storm drains while reminding citizens that whatever goes down the drain goes directly to the river. The unique, beautiful public art will also add to the vibrancy of downtown streetscapes.

This exciting project gives Dayton artists the opportunity to express themselves with semi-permanent public art. Artists will create small-scale, outdoor storm drain murals to communicate the function and importance of local storm drains and their connection to the rivers.

Why Storm Drains?

Storm drains are essential units of city infrastructure that can impact the health of the region’s rivers. Like many cities, Dayton’s municipal separate storm sewer system drains directly from city streets, parking lots and lawns to the river. As it moves to and through the storm drain system, stormwater can pick up anything in its path such as grease, oil, sediments, anti-freeze, fertilizer and pet waste. This water then travels through storm drains, untreated, to our local rivers and streams—NOT the wastewater treatment plant. That means when pollutants such as soapy water, oil, paint and trash are disposed of via storm drains, they end up directly in our waterways.
More information, along with the application can be found at: www.daytonwater.org/index.php?page=storm-drain-art.  For questions you may contact Katie Norris, Environmental Scientist for the City of Dayton – Department of Water at 937.333.2798.

Meet AJ Ferguson, UpDayton’s New Executive Director

February 17, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

AJ FergusonAJ Ferguson started his new role as Updyaton Executive Director this week. His role is to ignite and lead this young professional organization on their mission of spurring economic growth in the Dayton region by attracting and retaining young talent. The group’s signature event is the annual UpDayton Summit, which gathers over 300 hundred Dayton area residents to share and vote on ideas to make Dayton a better place to live, work and play.

“When I attended my first UpDayton Summit in 2012, I was overwhelmingly inspired by the enthusiasm and creativity in the room. It was this experience at the Summit that pulled me into an UpDayton project, into moving downtown, and ultimately into applying for the director position” – says AJ.

AJ grew up in the Dayton area and has a strong background of involvement and leadership in the region. He graduated from the University of Dayton with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (2012) and a Master’s in Renewable and Clean Energy (2013). His passion for improving the region stems from his experiences in the University of Dayton’s Rivers Institute and Fitz Center for Leadership in Community.

“The story of Dayton’s revival is getting exciting and I, like all those involved with UpDayton, want to be part of it. I cannot wait to get started,” said Ferguson.

Ferguson’s previous professional experience includes internships with the UD Rivers Institute, Sustainable Pittsburgh, and the Dayton Regional Green initiative. He most recently worked as the chief operating officer at a local start-up company called Dropoly.

We asked AJ to answer some questions for us:

AJ on the water (photo courtesy Facebook)

Describe the Dayton region with 3 words:
Inspiring untapped potential

If you were showing prospective newcomers to Dayton – what 3 places would you take them to?
2nd Street Market, any local brewery, kayaking on the Mad River into downtown

I’d never have to leave Dayton if it had ….
all my friends who live in other cities and states

The thing the “powers that be”  don’t realize about young professionals is…
We want places and employers that share our values, especially our desire for work-life balance.

What I hope to accomplish during my time at Updayton….
I think the watershed moment for young Daytonians is still ahead. We want young adults to be engaged and thriving in the Dayton region to the point that young people everywhere are curious about what’s happening in Dayton, Ohio. When Dayton is making lists of millennial-friendly cities and regions, we’ll know we’re getting there.

I still have much to learn from the board and past leaders of the organization before championing a particular direction, but some themes have emerged so far:

updayton– The UpDayton board and core volunteers are incredibly committed and put tons of time into UpDayton’s mission. We accomplish more than a typical organization of our size because of them. So, goal one is to keep such a good thing going and growing.

– We’d like to get the organization to the next level in order to grow our impact and become a more powerful force for attracting and retaining young talent. For this purpose, we hope to grow our organization’s capacity and resources. We’ll do this through increased fundraising as well as creative programs that generate revenue for the organization while simultaneously advancing our mission.

– Last year UpDayton launched its Catalyst Program with the support of Montgomery County. The programs three focus areas are creating leadership opportunities for young people, connecting with college campuses and engaging new hires at local employers. A major goal for the organization will be refining and growing this program in the coming years. Human Resources teams at area employers are on the front lines of the talent retention and attraction conversation. Have An Idea For A Pop Up Shop?

February 17, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

pop upActivated Spaces, an initiative to fill downtown storefronts, is accepting applications for temporary retail, service, and office businesses to open downtown this spring as part of the eighth phase of its Pop-up Project. The project matches business owners and entrepreneurs with downtown property owners who have first-floor storefront space available for occupancy.

Interested retailers or office space seekers should fill out an application, which can be downloaded here: Pop-up-Project-RFP-Spring 2015 and email it to Jen Cadieux at [email protected]. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, March 13. Tenants will be selected the week of March 30, and retailers must be ready to open no later than the end of May.

Lease lengths will range from three to six months. The spaces will have varying lease rates, but will be leased below market value. Activated Spaces volunteers will connect retailers and office businesses with commercial property owners, help make the space move-in ready, and promote the business during such events as First Friday. Selected businesses will negotiate leasing terms directly with the selected property owner, but flexibility for the tenant is a priority.

IMG_1203Activated Spaces volunteers hope to build on the success of the Pop-Up Project’s seven phases. Eleven of the businesses that have opened as part of the Pop-Up Project are still open: Beaute Box, 116 W. Fifth St.; Peace on Fifth, 234 Dutoit St.; American Pi, 41 S. St. Clair St.; Vintage Barbershop, 110 W. Fifth St.; Sew Dayton, 261 Wayne Ave..; Green Baby, 2nd Street Market; Spice Paradise, 16 Brown St.; Hicks’ Barber Shop, 16 Brown St.; Catapult Creative, 133 N. Ludlow St.; Confetti, 42 W. 5th St.; and Ambition Magazine, 131 N. Ludlow St. Since the inception of the project in 2011, more than 13,000 square feet of vacant space has been filled and 29 new jobs have been created.

Commercial property owners interested in offering space to Pop-Up Shop owners should contact Jen Cadieux at 937-224-1518. Once a match is made, a small stipend is available to be distributed at the discretion of the Activated Spaces team to each of the businesses each month for the first three months to assist in off-setting startup costs.

The Pop-Up Project is driven by volunteers from the young professional organizations Generation Dayton and UpDayton with support from the Downtown Dayton Partnership, the City of Dayton, the City of Dayton Neighborhood Mini-Grant program and community volunteers. Activated Spaces is part of the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan, a strategic blueprint for the future of downtown.

Those interested in volunteering with Activated Spaces should e-mail [email protected].

Renaissance Man: An Interview with Singer/Songwriter Jason Trout

February 16, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

Singer/songwriter Jason Trout, who spent most of his early days growing up in the city of Marion, Indiana, has been a pretty free  spirit throughout most of his life.  Without any proper training or push towards it, Trout was around eight or nine when he started  writing music.  Late last year, Trout released his solo debut LP Out Of My Mind And Into Yours.  The album is a lo-fi indie/folksy album  that was recorded in his home using a Tascam 4 track.  The new album, which follows his debut EP Off The Field Issues, marks a  new direction for Trout.  A path that didn’t come easy.

Creating and playing music at one point was put onto the side temporary when Trout started attending Ball State University in 1995  to study law.  “I went into college thinking, ‘Okay, I’ll be a lawyer.  Be will be a 4.0 student’,” Trout mentions.  “That’s what my mom  and dad wanted.”  His progression into law was short-lived, because for Trout-law was never the direction he was supposed to go.    Trout switched majors, going to theater.  “I didn’t think I was a good enough vocalist or guitarist to major into those,” Trout added.    The musical side of Trout, his desire to create something special, was growing larger and stronger.  He couldn’t accept the fact that    the direction of life is headed toward a future that wasn’t thrilled about.

Between the age of nineteen and twenty, Trout finally accepted that playing music full time was inevitable.  He packed his  belongings and moved to Austin, Texas.  “I’ll be honest with you-Austin is the only place that ever felt that I belong.  Without  question,” Trout said.  In spite of moving to Austin, the city wasn’t Trout’s first choice.  The goal was to originally move to Los  Angeles.  With the guidance of his college theater group, along with his love of director Richard Linklater’s work, Trout almost immediately felt at home within the city.  He quickly started to develop a following with his music, and soon started to see his hard work paying off.  Large record labels started courting Trout-flying him back and forth from city to city, riding in limos.  A year of writing and performing included, along with the dream slowly starting to become reality-things were looking good.  The payoff was coming.

However, the toll on Trout started to mount.  What was slowly a dream developing into reality quickly evaporated.  There was an unraveling infrastructure inside one of the labels that were interested in Trout.  He also was led astray from someone, giving false hope.  Around that same time span, the relationship that he is in suddenly ended.  The emotional toll began to weigh down on Trout.  “I wasn’t able to think straight or move correctly.  My body was affected.  I didn’t know what was going on,” Trout explained.  With his world crumbling all around him, Trout went to get away and visit his folks, whom at the time lived in Knoxville.  While we was there, he was diagnosed with having a nervous breakdown.

Even though he wanted desperately to get back to Austin, there was something that pulling him to stay in Knoxville.  The decision to stay turned out to be beneficial.  As the healing began, Trout spent a great deal of his time there being with his mother.  They would spend every single together, catching up.  Trout mentions that his mother was a key component to getting healthy again.  Little did they both know, the time together would be meaningful than they could imagine.  Trout’s mother was diagnosed with cancer, and passed two months later.

Trout’s time in Knoxville also got back to doing what he loved-playing music.  He led the formation of his band The God Star Social.  They band began playing some gigs at local clubs like The Pilot Light, Axis, and Java.  After the release of their first EP A Queer Sultry Summer in 2002, the band released their 2003 debut LP Decidedly Lo-FI/Revolution And Static Sky.  The album garnered national and internationally acclaim, with critics singing the praise of the band, the record, and most of all-Trout’s vision.  Trout spent the next 5 years touring the U.S. as The God Star Social, both solo and with a rotating cast of musicians. He released the last God Star Social record in 2008.  During that period of time, Trout met his now ex-wife during a show in Columbus.  When they were married, they lived in Austin briefly before moving back to Ohio.

Although we has had to overcome some obstacles from the past couple of years, ranging from divorce and family tragedy, Trout  explained that he views this time in his life as a renaissance of sorts.  With the release of Out Of My Head And Into Yours, it marks  the first time is releasing music under his own name.  He has found peace within himself, which is remarkable considering at one  point-he didn’t write a single song for years.  Now, he is currently planning and prepping on new records with The Touchy Feelys,  his indie vocal duo with Andrea Dawn Courts, and City Deer, his punk folk band with drummer Lucas Longanbach and bassist Chris  Lute. Trout is also working on a cover album on his favorite artist, Daniel Johnston.  “I never been a big cover guy,” Trout says.    “These songs feel like my own, so it’s real easy to do it.”

As he sits in his home in Athens, Ohio, longer is that struggle to be happy for Trout.  One main reason is what came out of his now  finished marriage-his wonderful  daughter.  Trout beams over the phone when we talks about his deeply introspective daughter.  “We  talk about what she could be  when grows up.  I ask her what she wants to be, an actress or a doctor.  She says, ‘When I grow up, I just wanna be me.’,” Trout says.

That’s exactly what the older Trout is doing.

10?’s with Chef Don Warfe

February 16, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

ChefDonWarfeDon Warfe was born in California, but as a  military kid he moved around a lot,  lived in Japan, and eventually his family came to Dayton where his grandparents lived.  He grew up always cooking and while working at Buddkan,  a fine dining restaurant  in Philly that featured Asian  fusion cuisine,  he realized that food was truly his passion. He had found his career and  moved from restaurant to restaurant to grow his skills, including a stint in upstate New York, five years with Fleming’s and then became  part of an opening team at a Colorado eatery where he served as an Executive Chef.

It was at this job that Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares reached out to him and asked him to consult with them on a few episodes.   On the show he’d help introduce new menu items and help work with the kitchen crew to ensure success.  Chef Don would then stick around after the TV crew left,  for a few weeks to to stabilize the new menu, train the front and back of the house staff and ended up staying at one of the featured  restaurants for almost a year.

After a working hundred hour weeks for years,  he needed a break.  He came back to Dayton to visit his family and decided to stay for a while .He had a friend that worked at the Trolley Stop and  they were looking to rework their food offerings.  Chef Don was hired as a consultant to bring fresh, locally sourced dishes and greater variety to their menu.  And while he was transforming the menu at this Oregon District business, there was a lady transforming his life.  Chef Don fell in love with Mindy and her son Theo and will be getting married soon.

While still running the kitchen at Trolley Stop, he’s also taken on a side job, consulting with Mike Schwartz, of Belmont Party Supply,  on his new joint coming to Centerville, Ollie’s Place.  A long time in planning, Mike’s new venture will be a tap room, whiskey bar and carryout.  Chef Don is  writing  the menu, designing their kitchen and training their staff.  Look for it to open in April with 60 beers on tap and “awesome food, ” according to Warfe.

And between both jobs, Chef Don took time to answer our 10 questions:

1.  What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

This varies seasonally. I love using local ingredients. The local pork shoulder that I get from KJB Farms always makes me happy.

2.  What ingredient do you dread?

Salt and Pepper. Just kidding. I’m not a fan of using processed foods. I really don’t like using Chicken Base.

3.  What’s your favorite dish to make?

I love making so many different dishes. I love to cook fish and just about any meat. I really enjoy making Paella.

4.  What’s your favorite pig out food?

My special lady and I love to make antipasti boards and pig out late at night sometimes. It’s pretty amusing what items can end up on the board. It’s interactive and so much fun to share the experience together. It can range from smoked herring to chile chocolate to spicy kimchi. It’s pretty personal so I won’t say anything else about it.243072_147753738628195_1513875_o

5.  What restaurant, other than your own do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?

I feel like I haven’t dined out very much in Dayton. There are still a lot of restaurants that I am waiting to go try. I really like Little Saigon.

6.  What’s your best advice for home chefs?

I would suggest that home chefs go to the local farmer’s market. It’s such an advantage for your cooking. You’re supporting local economy, using fresh quality ingredients that are better for you and ultimately taste better. I would also suggest that people have fun cooking. Take a recipe and make it your own.

7.  If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

Anthony Bourdain. Because he knows food and travel. I would love to hear the stories he could tell after a few drinks at the table.
Alice Waters. Again, I would love to sit there and just humbly listen to her experiences and enjoy a meal with her.
Christopher Walken. His voice at the dinner table. I would ask him to read all of our books out loud.
My grandmother, because I miss her very much. And of course Mindy would be right beside me serving as my c0- hostess for our dinner party.

Thomas-Keller004-5-9-05

Chef Thomas Keller

8.  Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

Thomas Keller, because his cuisine seems so true. He is so ingredient driven and a master in this field. He has been a major influence on chefs today to embrace local ingredients from farms, fisherman, and gardens. His techniques are so sound and quality driven. I don’t know any chefs that aren’t inspired when they open The French Laundry Cookbook.

9.  What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

Never the same thing. I love spending time with my ‘soon to be’ wife and her son. We play games in the park, or in the grocery store, or in the book store, or in the house. I enjoy having dinner with my family and relaxing. I’m currently reading all the volumes of the graphic novel, The Walking Dead, and watching Twin Peaks episodes.

10.  Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

Lucky Break: I was contacted by Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares to work as a chef consultant on the show in Colorado. It was my job to train restaurant staff their new menu and teach them how to function properly as a restaurant. They asked me to be on film for my last episode and it was a thrill to work with one of my favorite chefs. This also answers the kitchen disaster part of this question. Before the transformation, there were some pretty bad practices in place.

‘Nice Work If You Can Get It’ Review –Victoria Theatre Association – Giddy, Glorious Gershwin

February 12, 2015 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Hugely entertaining and marvelously accented by the timeless tunes of George and Ira Gershwin, “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” a 2012 Tony Award nominee for Best Musical presented at the Schuster Center courtesy of the Victoria Theatre Association’s Premier Health Broadway Series, pleases as a giddy throwback to bygone musical comedy.

Based on Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse’s book for the 1926 Gershwin musical “Oh, Kay!,” “Nice Work” is a silly, summertime, Prohibition-era romantic farce that finds goofy criminals, sexy dames, handsome henchmen, and the haughty upper crust colliding on Long Island. As is standard fare for such zany stories, mistaken identity runs rampant nearly to the point of excess. However, librettist Joe DiPietro, who won Tonys for Best Book and Score for “Memphis,” keeps the tale peppy and engaging with enough twists, particularly in Act 2, to genuinely delight even when corny jokes and double entendres provoke eye rolls along the way.

Alex Enterline (Jimmy Winter) and the female ensemble of “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” (Photo by Jeremy Daniel)

In a refreshing turn of events for a national tour, the leading players actually outshine their Broadway counterparts. As wealthy, spoiled playboy Jimmy Winter, created to one-dimensional effect by Matthew Broderick, Alex Enterline truly sparkles with charm, finesse and excellent, lyric-conscious vocals. He is perfectly matched by the outstanding Mariah MacFarlane as bootlegger Billie Bendix, who pines for Jimmy although he’s been married three times and is currently engaged. MacFarlane, a sublime soprano specifically navigating “Someone to Watch Over Me” with lovely tenderness and surprising humor, surpasses Tony nominee Kelli O’Hara in the role due to a more convincing grasp of Billie’s tough, tomboy sensibilities. Enterline and MacFarlane’s beautifully breezy treatment of “’S Wonderful,” which director/choreographer David Eggers winningly recreates from Kathleen Marshall’s original vision, is particularly joyful and smile-inducing as the carefree duo dances merrily throughout Jimmy’s living room.

In addition to splendid Tony-nominated costumes designed with period panache by the late, great Martin Pakledinaz and a top-notch orchestra conducted by Charlie Reuter, the featured performers are strong overall. Reed Campbell and Aaron Fried terrifically and respectively fuel the comedic chaos as Cookie McGee and Duke Mahoney, Billie’s cohorts. Rachael Scarr is a ditzy pleasure as modern dance interpreter Eileen Evergreen, Jimmy’s fiancé. Stephanie Gandolfo beguilingly seduces as the incredibly daft Jeannie Muldoon, who is convinced Duke is heir to the British throne. Thomas Schario admirably appears in the thankless role of Chief Barry. The terrific Barbara Weetman hits the mark as Millicent Winter, Jimmy’s sassy, sophisticated mother. Benjamin Perez duly commands attention as uptight Senator Max Evergreen. As Duchess Estonia Dulworth, Max’s no-nonsense, pro-prohibition sister, Stephanie Harter Gilmore is too young to fully sell Estonia’s seasoned, domineering gravitas, but steals the show during a kooky Act 2 dinner sequence that finds her hilariously “Looking for a Boy.”

“Nice Work” doesn’t possess the conceptual aptitude of “Crazy for You,” the finest Gershwin-inspired tribute to date, but certainly satisfies as a warm, inviting dose of feel-good fun to cure the chilly winter blues.

“Nice Work if You Can Get It” continues through Feb. 15 at the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. Performances are today and Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Act One: 75 minutes; Act Two: 60 minutes. Tickets are $25-$97. For tickets or more information, call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit www.ticketcenterstage.com.

Dayton’s Housemade Sauces: Taking Oregon District by Storm

February 12, 2015 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Taking the Oregon District by Storm

A local company called HouseMade, has been heating up the local  food scene with their sauces, particularly the HouseMade Sriracha sauce.  Ground zero of this inferno seems to be the Oregon district.  Lovers of spicy food have delighted in the surge of sriracha around the Fifth Street area.  The cause of the local warming of the taste buds is Dayton area Chef, Leanne House.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Chef House developed her signature sauces throughout her culinary career, but only started bottling them last year.   Since that time the bottles have exploded in popularity.

— The past 12 months have definitely been a whirlwind for her.   In that time she has  grown her business 1000 fold, joined the blogging team of Dayton Most Metro’s own Food Adventures Crew, and accepted the job of Executive Chef at Mudlick Tap House. She will be launching her new menu in the coming weeks.  Did we mention that in the same time frame, her sriracha sauce won 1st place at a hot sauce competition in Louisiana, and her hot honey sauce won 1st place at Jungle Jim’s Weekend of Fire event?

— Whats her secret? It is twofold.  First she uses Ohio grown peppers, and everyone knows Ohio produce rocks.  Secondly, her workers take the time to peel the stems off of each and every pepper. Other sauces leave the stems on, but there are no bitter pepper stems in her sauce !

— Dayton homeless charity, HOMEFULL, is  growing peppers this year for Housemade. They will team with Ohio farms Folsom and Pine Farm, in Columbus, who will start the seeds. Homefull will grow the plants to maturity, and expect to grow over 1000 pounds of peppers this year. The eventual goal would be to grow all the peppers needed for the year here in Dayton, creating more jobs at Homefull, thereby benefiting Dayton’s homeless population.  Housemade is all about giving back to the community.

— Housemade Sauces and other products have crept their way through the nooks and crannies of the Oregon district, or as she has named it, the “Oregon Trail.”

Here are places in the Oregon District area that have Housemade Sriracha sauces and products in stock, or feature them in their food menu:

THE “OREGON TRAIL” INCLUDES:

1.       THE OREGON EXPRESS – Their “SRIRACHA PIZZA” is one of our favorite pizzas of all time

2.       SPICE PARADISE – Local spice grocer has sauces and rubs for sale

3.       LILY’S BISTRO – They feature the local sriracha in their kitchen and are one of the only restaurants in Dayton to feature the sauce in their bar drink offerings

4.       TOXIC BREW COMPANY – Porn or prawn beer &  bloody beers featuring Lily’s bloody Mary mix and Housemade Sriracha

5.       LUCKY’S TAP ROOM & EATERY – A recent addition to the “Oregon Trail,” having just bought some Sriracha to feature on their menu

6.       THE TROLLEY STOP – Not originally in the trail, but they are another recent addition.  Look for them to feature the sriracha in their menu and maybe bar drinks

7.        ECLECTIC ESSENTIALS – Art, Jewelry, antiques, and now Housemade sauces and products !!  One of our first vendors!

8.       CLASH DAYTON – Art gallery, clothing store, and a great place to get Housemade Sriracha! One of our first vendors!

9.       THE DUBLIN PUB – Now featuring Housemade sauces at their restaurant

10.   WHEAT PENNY OVEN & BAR – Has recently featured the locally made sriracha on their pizzas

HouseMade has over 60 vendors throughout Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.

Housemade now offers Salts & Rubs

— HOUSEMADE HOT HONEY: This Thai Chili hot honey makes anything it is drizzled on taste amazing. Warning-highly addictive.

— HOUSEMADE SALTS & RUBS: One of a kind rubs for your meats including: Tomatillo-Serrano, Thai Chili and Smoked Sriracha flavors respectively.  Spice up your life with these babies!

— HOUSEMADE JAMS: Limited availability.  Our fave flavors include Vanilla-Pear and Pineapple-Mango !  Homemade and one-of-a-kind fresh tastes.

What is next for Chef LeeAnne House?

She will be featuring quite a few of her products at Mudlick Tap House.

The Hard to find Jams from Housemade are Extremely Delicious

1.       Tomatillo serrano smoked salt in the fresh greek yogurt cheese ( I am making this)

2.       Sriracha in the house made chorizo

3.       Sriracha in the pimento cheese

4.       Hot Honey will be appearing in Chef House’s cakes.  Mudlick Tap House will have a daily offering of fresh cakes at the bar. It will be one of the first things you see when you walk in.

Chef House’s lifelong passion has been the culinary world.  She was raised in area restaurants owned by her parents.  In recent years, she has been lucky enough to share kitchens with some of Dayton’s best chefs.  Benefit from her hard work, by getting some of the best sauces on the planet! Get on the bandwagon and join the thousands in Dayton that are eating up the Sriracha sauce and other HouseMade creations.
