Bike the Arts: Exploring Downtown Dayton

June 14, 2015 By Megan Cooper

Since my car-less adventure way back in the day, I’ve always believed that one of the best ways to see our beautiful city is on a bike. With all the bike-love happening in Dayton these days – Link Dayton (bike share), recognition of our top ranking for the most off-street paved trails, the RiverScape bike hub, an increased number of bike lanes for commuting, our bronze ranking as a Bicycle-Friendly community and more – it’s no wonder that more cycle tours and races are popping up for community members of every interest level and ability to strap on that helmet and ride.

BikeArtsPostcardUpdate

On Saturday, June 20, there’s a fun, free and unique new addition to the cycling opportunities. Dayton Regional Green and Courteous Mass have teamed up to host Bike the Arts – Downtown Dayton. A total ride of just under 7 miles on a (mostly) flat surface – this event showcases both our bike-friendly environment and our talented arts community. Registration for the ride begins at 10:30 a.m. at RiverScape MetroPark; the ride goes from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00(ish) p.m.

An all-volunteer effort, born out of the Arts and Culture team from Dayton Regional Green and relying upon the experience from the cycling gurus at Courteous Mass, this ride is slow, smooth and filled cool visits to local arts spots.

Jane Black, co-chair of the DRG Livability pillar, is the lead docent on the tour. With oodles of experience as a both a professional artist, educator and administrator – Jane will share exciting insights and behind-the-scenes stories about the public art and spaces; she’ll introduce you to great pieces of art in plain view that you’ll see in a whole new way. Riders will also hear from staff at Dayton Art Institute and K12 Gallery, as well as artists/performers Bing Davis, Suzy Richardt, Ryan McCullough and Justin Howard. How’s it work? Ride a bit, meet an artist, ride again, see a performance, back on the bike to visit a gallery, and keep on going as you enjoy exploring your city!

The ride is escorted by Dayton Police Officer Jeff Brown for everyone’s safety and comfort (this is an on-street ride, we’ll follow all traffic rules). Helmets are recommended.

Bonus! The first 30 registrants receive a FREE 24-hour membership to try Link Dayton, and the first 50 registrants receive a FREE Take Back the Tap water bottle from the City of Dayton. Plus, snacks and water will be provided. Don’t miss your chance to bid to win a beautiful piece of art created by Suzy Richardt in honor of the ride.

No bike? No problem! You can rent one from Five Rivers MetroParks or try Link Dayton (multiple Link Stations are along the route, so you’ll be able to check-in as needed).

This program is part of a larger initiative of Dayton Regional Green. While many of the action teams are working closely with municipalities, organizations and corporations – the Arts and Culture team is working to provide fun and easy ways for individuals to learn more about multi-modal transportation, energy savings and personal steps to environmental sustainability.

Five For Drinking – Gin Edition for World Gin Day!

June 12, 2015 By Brian Petro

Juniper Berries

The common juniper berry, the berry that gives gin its flavor.

Gin has been around for a very, very long time. There are stories that date it back to the times of the Black Plague, where people would sip on juniper-flavored spirits to stop the spread of the foul disease. It was the Italians that initially started adding herbs, including juniper, to base spirits. The Dutch perfected the flavor, balancing the juniper with other herbs to create liquor known as genever, which is where gin earned its name. It was not until the British put their hands on it that is became the spirit we all know and love today. June 13th is the seventh World Gin Day, recognizing of the global popularity of this herbal liquor.

Gin, like tequila, is a flavor that people either love or hate. Bartenders and Britons through the ages have loved it, because of the powerful flavors it adds to any cocktail. When William III (or William the Orange if you like) ascended to the British throne in 1688, he brought gin with him for the British people. The British then brought it to the rest of the world through their empire.  When they started to explore more tropical climates, they discovered more than just new people and lands. They found malaria. They also discovered that an element in cinchona bark, quinine, helped stave off the disease. Cinchona bark is incredibly bitter on its own, so the Brits tipped a little gin into the tonic they were given, added the lime they always had on had (scurvy, you know), and created the cocktail they are best known for, the gin and tonic.

Hendrick's Gin and Tea Cup

Care for a spot of gin?

Bartenders also fell in love with gin due to the fact it was readily available and offered a unique flavor. Many modern cocktails began with a gin base, and eventually evolved as palates changed and other liquors became popular. The martini glass, and the cocktail it holds, is the default icon for cocktails and drinking establishments. Vodka martinis are more popular in this day and age, but the three martini lunch was a gin based affair. Because of this affinity bartenders have with gin, and the fact we may be in another Golden Age of bartending, the spirit has evolved. Craft distillers have played with the flavors, reviving older styles of gin like Old Tom and adding other elements to it like barrel aging. If you are someone who has not tried gin in a long time, here are five classic recipes for you to explore:

Tom Collins

2 oz. Old Tom gin
1 oz. lemon juice
1 oz. simple syrup
Club soda
Garnish: Lemon wedge

Pour the gin, lemon juice and simple syrup into a cocktail shaker over ice. Shake vigorously, and strain over ice into a tall glass. Top off with club soda and add the lemon wedge.

The Tom Collins is one of many cocktails mention by Jerry Thomas in his 1877 book “How to Mix Drinks: The Bon Vivant’s Companion”.  It was one of many other Collins drinks that he mentioned, all of them containing a base spirit, lemon juice and simple syrup. It is whispered that this cocktail is based off a punch created by a gentleman named John Collins, a server at Lattimer’s Old House in London. Like many other cocktail origin stories, that may or may not be true.

Sean Connery James Bond

Of course he made his own cocktail. What can’t he do?

Vesper

3 oz. Gordons Dry gin
1 oz. vodka (Belle of Dayton or Buckeye would be lovely)
½ oz. Lillet
Garnish: Lemon Peel

Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker over ice. Shake vigorously, and strain into a chilled martini glass. Twist the lemon peel over the cocktail, then drop into the drink.

Ian Fleming created this cocktail for his hero, James Bond, to sip on in Casino Royale. It is named after the female agent Bond was sharing it with at the time. Gordon’s is what is mentioned in the text of the book, but any London gin will work. Over the years the cocktail evolved into a martini, and now into Heineken. How the mighty have fallen…

Negroni

1 oz. gin
1 oz. orange liqueur
1 oz. Campari
Garnish: Orange Peel

Pour the ingredients into a short glass over ice and stir. Twist the orange peel over the cocktail then drop into the drink.

The Negroni has been growing in popularity over the years, as evidenced by Negroni Week, a celebration of the cocktail and all of its varieties. After a long day doing whatever Italian counts do, Count Camillo Negroni went to his favorite bar, Caffé Casoni, and asked the bartender substitute gin for the club soda in an Americano. It became an instant hit, and spread quickly through Europe.

Classic Martini

2 oz. gin
½ oz. dry vermouth
Orange Bitters (optional)
Garnish: Lemon Peel

Pour the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Stir for 10 seconds or 30 turns of the spoon. Strain the cocktail into a chilled martini glass. Twist the lemon peel over the drink, then drop peel in.

There are hundreds of ways to make even the classic gin martini. You can garnish it with olives or twists, change the proportions by adding more gin or removing some of the vermouth, or leave the vermouth out altogether. Winston Churchill once said that the only way to make a martini was to chill the gin, pour it into a cold cocktail glass, and bow in the direction of France. Some will make the martini “wet”, which is equal parts gin and vermouth. Yours should fall somewhere in between.

Aviation Cocktail

This is Dayton. Of course aviation was going to be mentioned.

Aviation

2 oz. gin
½ oz. Maraschino liqueur
¼ oz. Crème de Violette
¾ oz. Lemon Juice
Garnish: Maraschino cherry

Pour all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker over ice. Shake vigorously, and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry and enjoy.

This is a lovely cocktail. Nicely balanced with the sweet and savory elements in it, and the light purple-bluish hue makes it stand out in a bar. It was created just before Prohibition hit, then promptly lost as the country went dry and Crème de Violette disappeared. This purple, sweetly floral liqueur has reemerged because of the craft cocktail boom. The name came from its bluish color, celebrating the fact that flying was becoming quite the rage.

The liquors that may be unfamiliar to you can be found at Arrow Wine. They may only have a bottle or two of some like Crème de Violette, but they will have them. They have a wonderful selection of gin as well. Ransom is a fabulous Old Tom Gin, and there are many other great newcomers on the scene like Hendrick’s, Death’s Door, Aviation, Plymouth, and Watershed Gin. And as a secret sixth cocktail, if you want to substitute champagne for the soda water in the Tom Collins, you will have a French 75 (named after the World War I gun that provided quite a kick).  Or you can just grab a bottle of tonic water, a few limes, and enjoy a simple gin and tonic on World Gin Day. Cheers!

“Hattitude” & Gospel Music Make Crowns A Must See!

June 11, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

crowns 2

Crows cast. photo by Scott Kimmins

The Human Race completes its 28th season of producing professional theatre for the Miami Valley with actress/playwright Regina Taylor‘s hit Crowns. Based on Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry‘s book by same name, the play begins as troubled Brooklyn teenager Yolanda is sent to live with her church-going grandmother down South after the death of her brother. There she finds healing in the personal stories of the ladies of the congregation and the hats that adorn their heads. Through time and space, their intimate histories create a soulful, joyous triumph of song, dance, culture and glorious “hattitude” in this powerhouse gospel musical like no other. The Human Race Theatre Company’s production runs tonight, June 11 – 28, 2015 at The Loft Theatre. It is co-directed by Dayton Contemporary Dance Company Artistic Director Debbie Blunden-Diggs, who also serves as choreographer, and Human Race Theatre Founding Resident Artist Scott Stoney. Resident Artist Scot Woolley is the musical director.

Crowns features performances by an ensemble of seven versatile actors, including Wright State University senior Jasmine Easler (Hot Mikado, Fences) as “Velma”, Joliet F. Harris (Because of Winn Dixie, Ella the Musical, Ain’t Misbehavin’, HBO’s The Wire) as “Mother Shaw”, Joy Lynn Jacobs (Marie Christine and The Music Man on Broadway, Gotham and Nurse Jackie on television) as “Wanda”, David Jennings (After Midnight, Hands on a Hardbody, Brooklyn the Musical on Broadway, Grammy nomination for 30th Anniversary recording of Dreamgirls) as “The Man”, Monette McKay (Mamma Mia!, Memphis, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark on Broadway) as “Yolanda”, former Dayton Contemporary Dance Company member Debra Walton (Children of Eden, Little Shop of Horrors for Human Race; Pajama Game and Street Corner Symphony on Broadway) returns to The Human Race after many years as “Jeanette” and Cincinnati actress Torie Wiggins (Mame, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike for Human Race; The Mountain Top and Black Pearl Sings! for Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati) makes a third appearance with The Human Race this season as “Mabel”.

Scenic designer Tamara L. Honesty (Other Desert Cities, Lombardi) and costume designer David M. Covach (August: Osage County, Moonlight and Magnolias) found inspiration for their designs in the Yoruba culture of Nigeria. Covach costumed each of the play’s female characters in a different color, based on a number of Yoruba deities. Crowns marks Covach’s thirtieth design for The Human Race. Honesty combined the earthy, wooden textures and colors of Yoruba craftwork with the modesty found in many Southern Pentecostal churches. The result is an open set space framed by screens upon which Resident Lighting Designer John Rensel will use projections to create a variety of times and locations. Scot Woolley and percussionist Kevin Anderson accompany the cast, performing the musical’s score-a mix of gospel, hymns, spirituals, chants-live offstage on a variety of instruments. Sound Designer Jay Brunner completes the environment by incorporating traditional and popular Yoruba/Nigerian music throughout the action.

Since its development for the stage in 2002, Crowns has become one of the most popular and widely-produced African-American plays in the country. “I think one of reasons for its popularity-certainly the reason why we wanted to produce it-is because it helps tell the story of who we are as a people,” says Producing Artist Director Kevin Moore. “It’s a beautiful, fascinating look at the history of African-Americans, and a celebration of culture and its roots inspired by the hats these ladies wear to church.” The fact that Crowns has much to teach its audiences (and its company) is not lost on Co-director Scott Stoney. “Working on this production with Debbie and this wonderful group of actors is amazing,” he says. “We all learn so much from each other. There’s more to it than just one person can know. And when it all comes together-the dance, the music and songs, the costumes, the stories-you can’t help but come away with a greater appreciation for this culture.”

Kevin Moore was delighted to be able to pair long-time friends Debbie Blunden-Diggs and Scott Stoney together to co-direct Crowns. Each brings a unique viewpoint and set of skills to the production. Blunden-Diggs, with a life-time of dance under her belt, refines the play’s narrative with her choreography while lending it her personal perspective as an African-American woman. Stoney is a highly-accomplished director skilled with telling intimate stories and over twenty years experience with the intricacies of The Loft Theatre. “With this leadership combination,” says Moore, “I’m confident that our production is in great hands. The result will be phenomenal theatre.”

Tickets for the preview performance of Crowns tonight, June 11 start at $35 for adults, $32 for seniors and $17.50 for students. For all performances June 12 – 28, single ticket prices start at $40 for adults, $37 for seniors and $20 for students. Prices vary depending on the day of the week and seating location. Group discounts are available for parties of 10 or more. The Human Race is offering a pair of discount ticket opportunities. Side-area seats are available at all performances for $25 each, on sale two weeks prior to performance. The Sunday, June 14 7:00 p.m. performance is “Sawbuck Sunday”, when any available seat can be purchased in person for just $10 at The Loft Theatre box office two hours prior to the show. Discounts are subject to availability and some restrictions apply.

All performances are at the Metropolitan Art Center’s Loft Theatre, located at 126 North Main Street in downtown Dayton, Ohio. Show times for Crowns are 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday evenings. Performances on Sunday and Tuesday evenings begin at 7:00 p.m. and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday matinees.

Toxic Brew to Debut Grapefruit IPA at Night Market

June 11, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Toxic Brewery Unveils the Grapefruit Yoga IPA at the Night Market this Friday June 12th

We have EXCLUSIVE scoop on an event Friday night.  The secret is now out!

Toxic Brew Company will be at this Friday’s Night Market event at the Yellow Cab Building.  The big news is that for the first time, they will be debuting a GRAPEFRUIT version of their PRACTICE YOGA IPA.   A session-able IPA, the beer has nice balance of bitter and hoppy flavors.  The grapefruit infusion brings on a muted, exotic finish. What a better, refreshing drink on a hot summer evening.  Fruity, hoppy flavors infused into the signature taste of a Toxic Brew.  This is a perfect compliment to the local vendors that will be at the Night Market selling local crafts and foodstuffs.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— The Night Market is Friday Night, June 12 from 5pm-10pm

— The Event will be held at 700 E. Fourth Street, Downtown Dayton

— This Friday’s Night Market will be the biggest one yet.  This is largest list of vendors to date.  Our own Chef House is leading the local brigade with other Night Market organizers.

Some of our favorite local vendors to get our Food Adventures on with, are these MUST EATS:

MUST EATS:

Caramel Cravings – get some at Night Market

BEEF JERKY from SIMPLE MAN FOODS – terrific beef jerky out of Columbus with the perfect spiciness.

THE CARAMEL CORN FROM CARAMEL CRAVINGS– Big Ragu ate an entire bag of caramel corn at the last  Night Market – lose yourself in it too

THE MILK at STARDANCER CREAMERY – We bought a gallon of this milk, and it is like nothing you have ever tasted.  Creamy and wholesome from happy cows!

VANILLA EXTRACT at CHEF JC’s EXTRACTS – Big Ragu made cannoli dip with the vanilla extract last month and it was a smashing success

COOKIES AND CREAM POPS from SWEET P’s ICE POPS –  Hot day, cold treats – who can resist their flavors?

TOMATILLO-SERRANO SRIRACHA SALT from HOUSEMADE : Ok we are biased.  Well, we probably are addicted.  You all know about Chef House’s Sriracha Sauce and her Hot Honey sauce, but those new salt rubs are the latest rage.  They are perfect for baking chicken or seasoning grilled veggies.

Besides the great vendors, both Habitat for Humanity and Gem City Roller Girls are rumored to be attending.

And did we mention ..LOCAL BEER ?  We just scratched the surface on the various vendors, that will be there.

‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ Review – Victoria Theatre Association – Adequate Whimsy

June 11, 2015 By Russell Florence, Jr.

starcatcher

Oliver Wadsworth and Justine Salata in “Peter and the Starcatcher” (Photo by Alexander Weisman)

The fanciful Peter Pan play-with-music prequel “Peter and the Starcatcher” adequately closes the Victoria Theatre Association’s 2014- 15 Premier Health Broadway Series at the Schuster Center.

Sprightly adapted by Rick Elise based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, this “Starcatcher” primarily presents a unique quandary, specifically for theatergoers expecting to see the national tour of its tremendous Broadway mounting, nominated for nine Tony Awards in 2012 ultimately winning five. When the “Starcatcher” tour folded last year, the Victoria searched for a replacement version. Organizers selected a regional theater production conceived by Salt Lake City’s Pioneer Theatre Company, but the show just doesn’t have the shimmering conceptual sparkle, artistic ingenuity and emotional heft of the Broadway production, which certain patrons fondly recall to this very day.

Granted, director Jenn Thompson certainly attempts originality, but unfortunately her pacing is off-kilter in a startlingly humdrum Act 1that finds some actors having trouble projecting in the space, a crucial indication this intimate production truly belongs inside the Victoria Theatre. It’s also extremely odd Thompson allows Leo Ash Evens, who excessively portrays the villainous Black Stache (the precursor Captain Hook), to go unrealistically overboard in a defining moment late in Act 2.

Even so, there are consistently firm performances to be found here amid the fascinating, fun, ensemble-driven storytelling. The sharp, physical Rhett Guter winningly charms as the intuitive and vulnerable Boy/Peter. Justine Salata brings poise, humor and spunk to her terrifically astute portrayal of Molly, future mother of Wendy. José Restrepo (Smee), Austin Archer (Prentiss), Jake P. Evans (Ted), Jeff Gurner (Grempkin/Fighting Prawn), and Oliver Wadsworth (Mrs. Bumbrake/the mermaid Teacher) equally shine in featured comedic capacities.

Additionally, the presentation’s attractive technical elements are courtesy of scenic designer George Maxwell, costumer Carol Wells-Day, lighting designer Michael Gilliam, sound designer Joshua C. Hight, and hair/makeup designer Amanda French. Patricia Wilcox’s playful choreography and Tom Griffin’s crisp music direction suitably complement Wayne Barker’s cheery tunes.

“Starcatcher” enchants at its core due to its very engaging, “Wicked”-esque ability to present familiar lore refreshingly, particularly in its stronger Act 2 detailing the genesis of Tinkerbell and the need for a certain hook. However, when you consider the fundamental fact that the Victoria is responsible for and boasts about delivering national tours, watching an out of state regional theater showcase of this work is a disappointing predicament.

“Peter and the Starcatcher” continues through June 14 at the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. Performances are Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Act One: 65 minutes; Act Two: 58 minutes. Tickets are $25-$97. For tickets or more information, call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit www.ticketcenterstage.com.

Zesty Ranch Early Favorite for McDonald’s Shakin’ Flavor

June 10, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Chipotle BBQ Dusted McNuggets. Dip them in BBQ sauce

The feedback is in from the Shakin’ Flavor event at the Wilmington Pike McDonald’s last Monday.  The VIP guests at the Food Adventure were given Mcdonald’s swag and asked to test the flavors for themselves.   We found patrons loved all three flavors CHIPOTLE BBQ, GARLIC PARMESAN, and ZESTY RANCH.  It seemed the favorite this night was Zesty Ranch.

DID YOU KNOW?

Fast Food executives have long known that the Dayton area is much more inclined to give new fast food products an initial try.  Much more than the conservative tastebuds of Cincinnati or even Columbus.  That is why in Dayton, we see many test products here before they go national.  In other words, Dayton is an open minded, foodie town full of feed back (applaud yourselves).

HERE’S THE SKINNY on SHAKIN’ FLAVORS:

— McDonald’s new Shakin’ Flavor product is a free packet of seasonings that will be an option with any Chicken McNugget order or  large French Fry order.  Your choice of flavor is  CHIPOTLE BBQ, GARLIC PARMESAN, or ZESTY RANCH

— A extra “shakin” bag is given to the customer and  a powdered packet, and the rest is simple.  Dump the fries or McNuggets into the bag, and then the seasoning.  Close the bag and shake it like a pom-pom.  The result is pretty evenly seasoned fries or nuggets.  For more even results, after shaking,  we suggest laying the bag flat and tearing open rather than dumping the food out of the bag.

This is a great distraction for kids.  Hungry Jax found her children caught up in the excitement, and loved it as much as the yogurt in the kid’s meal.

Kids love the new Shakin Flavors and love to “Shake it Up”

The Big Ragu loved the Chipotle BBQ and Garlic Parmesan. It brought a new dimension to the nuggets and fries

MUST EATS:

Experiment with your own tastes, but we found a couple faves’ you gotta try.

— CHIPOTLE BBQ NUGGETS DIPPED IN BBQ SAUCE

— ZESTY RANCH FRENCH FRIES

— GARLIC PARMESAN NUGGETS DIPPED IN RANCH SAUCE

Get to select Golden Arches and shake things up.  Not every McDonald’s has them, but they are worth a try.  They bake ’em, you shake ’em, your flavor, make sure you savor !

Peace out to Ronald McDonald and the crew for their hospitality and the revolving videos showing how nuggets and burgers are made.

BEACH BOYS’ Brian Wilson, THE WHO, and TAB HUNTER – Check Out THE NEON This Weekend!

June 10, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

23723_320_470Hello Everyone,

As promised, we’re excited to open the new biopic about Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys this Friday. It’s called LOVE & MERCY, and the reviews are terrific. The Village Voice, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune and many others have given the film a 100% Review! In addition, we will open a documentary about the famous managers of The Who – LAMBERT AND STAMP. Lastly, we’ll have a one-night only screening of the crowd-pleasing documentary about Hollywood’s “boy next door” – TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL. If you still need to see IRIS or DIOR AND I, you’ll need to hurry down. Thursday will be your last chance to catch those films at THE NEON. FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD will stick around for one more week. For this week’s remaining showtimes (they’re different than the upcoming week – which are listed below), please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com

Synopsis for LOVE & MERCY: “LOVE & MERCY presents an unconventional portrait of Brian Wilson, the mercurial singer, songwriter and leader of The Beach Boys. Set against the era defining catalog of Wilson’s music, the film intimately examines the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the icon whose success came at extraordinary personal cost.” (taken from Roadside Attractions) This film has been winning rave reviews – especially for the two men who play Wilson – John Cusack and Paul Dano. Click on this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Synopsis for LAMBERT AND STAMP: “Aspiring filmmakers Chris Stamp and Kit Lambert set out to find a subject for their underground movie, one that will reflect the way it feels to be young and dissatisfied in postwar London. This unlikely partnership of two men from vastly different backgrounds was inspired by the burgeoning youth culture of the early 1960s. Lambert and Stamp searched for months and finally found in a band called the High Numbers a rebellious restlessness that was just what they were looking for. Abandoning their plans to make a film, they instead decided to mentor and manage this group, which evolved into the iconic band known as the Who. The result was rock ‘n’ roll history” (taken from Sony Classics) Click on this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

The crowd-pleasing, insightful and kinda gossipy SXSW hit documentary TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL will make its way to town for one special screening. If you’re a Tab Hunter fan or if you’re interested in how the Hollywood machine worked (and still does to some extent), I encourage you to attend. This film will only screen one time – Thursday, June 18 at 7:30 – as Pride Night at THE NEON. Tickets, just $8 each, are available now at THE NEON’s Box Office! “In the 1950s, Tab Hunter is number one at the box office and number one on the music charts. He is Hollywood’s most sought-after star and America’s boy next door. Natalie Wood, Debbie Reynolds and Sophia Loren are just a few of the actresses he is romantically linked to. Nothing, it seems, can damage Tab Hunter’s career. Nothing, that is, except for the fact that Tab Hunter is secretly gay. Now, Tab Hunter’s secret is out. In TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL we will meet, for the first time, the real Tab Hunter as he shares with us the whole story of a happy, healthy survivor of Hollywood’s roller coaster.”

Director Kevin Nam will be debuting his first short film on Monday, June 22. “What if you were given a chance to traverse your own subconscious? Would you be afraid of what you may see? We all have our demons kept at bay buried under the lies we tell ourselves. Keaton, a heartbroken man, is given this chance to reshape and reform his memories. With the help of Dr. Darren Vonnuxley at Entropy’s Enlightenment, Keaton is plunged deep into his own subconscious, where he must confront and conquer his demon, face to face. HOW TO MURDER YOUR MELANCHOLY is a short dark psychological drama with horror elements filmed entirely in the Dayton, Ohio region. This one and only screening of the short film is the directorial debut of local resident Kevin Nam. The director requires a mature audience due to scenes of graphic violence, blood, and gore. The director will also be in attendance for a brief Q & A immediately following the film. Please arrive early, screening will promptly begin at 8 pm. Tickets are on a first-come first-serve basis. Admission is FREE.” (taken from Kevin Nam’s press notes)

Many thanks to Oldies 97.3 and Omega Music for their help in spreading the word about LOVE & MERCY. Visit their facebook pages and enter their contests for your chance to win LOVE & MERCY Prize Packages!

Next Friday (June 19), we will open the film that many of you have been waiting for – I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS – starring Blythe Danner and Sam Elliott.

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you this weekend!

Jonathan

Ollie’s Place Set To Open Wednesday!

June 9, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

FullSizeRender

Owner Mike Schwart at the Beer Engine.

Mike Schwartz has been dreaming about this new place for more than 20 years.  He shared “that once I realized I couldn’t expand the Belmont Party Supply any more I started dreaming up this next venture.”  And on Wed, June 10th at 4pm, you can experience the reality of that dream- Ollie’s Place, located at 518 Miamisburg Centerville Rd in the Home Center Shopping Center, next to the newly located Hauer Music store.

Named after Mike’s Grandfather Ollie Schwartz,  a meat-cutter, local business owner and widowed father of six during the end of The Great Depression.  As  a strong, spirited man, he also served as a role model for Mike’s entrepreneurship.  10484728_423874581125810_7776538771099762842_n

Ollie’s Place is a restaurant that features 60 rotating taps of the best craft beers, a whiskey bar that is home to over 200 whiskeys from around the world,  and a retail beer  and wine carrryout with 1600 beers to choose from. Mike says, “with that selection if you can’t find a beer you like, you don’t like beer.”  There is even a beer engine, a manually operated device used to pump beer from a cask.

The beercooler itself was a rather impressive piece of engineering, Mike explained to me that each time a keg is changed, the lines are plugged in to a built in cleaning line, keeping the flavor of the beers pristine. And opposite the keg wall, the bottled beer lines up into the retail side of the operation.  You’ll be able to build your own six pack and the staff is well trained to make suggestions based on your likes or dislikes.  The retail side also offers homebrew kits as well as equipment for making your own beer or wine.  Schwartz shared that they will be offering brewing classes as the new location soon.

vanilla bean cheesecake

The restaurant, with seating for 140 (plus a patio to be added later this summer)  will be open at 4pm Tuesday through Sunday for dinner, as well as lunch on Saturday and Sunday from 11am -8pm.

Chef Joshua Walden will be executing a menu created by consultant Chef Don Warfe.  Appetizers include a cheese plate, herbed goat cheese and baguettes, and my favorite the Tempura bacon wrapped asparagus. Salads choices included a grilled chicken salad and a strawberry and mango mesclin option.  Main course selections included curry chicken kabobs, lump crab cakes, cauliflower steak, grilled chicken, shrimp or chicken tacos and black and blue sliders.  The menu includes beer pairing suggestions for each item.

Sous Chef Aimee Plessa does a fantastic job with the desserts, I tasted both the vanilla bean cheesecaks and the double chocolate bourbon creme brulee, which both paired perfectly with the Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout.

General Manager Gus Stathes explained to us that the tap list for opening night will be filled with as many special beers as they can get their hands on.  On an ongoing basis you can check BeerMenus.com to know what’s 10252054_10154093191868492_5005965636979665470_n-1on tap at Ollie’s.   He posted this hand written list on facebook a few hours ago.  So it won’t seem to matter what kind of beer you like, you’ll find something you like on draft.  And each beer has a 4oz tasting price, as well as prices for a pint, howler or growler (not all beers will be offered in growlers).

And if beer is not your thing, check out the wine list, the specialty cocktails or list of over 200 bourbons, 25 Irish whiskeys, or 55 scotch options priced for both a taste and a 2oz serving.

We think Ollie’s Place is gonna be one of Dayton’s new favorite places!

Almost Queen at Canal Music Fest

June 9, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

The Canal canalMusic Fest has been the platform for free concerts provided to the residents of Tipp City and the surrounding area since 2010.  The first event in 2010 was held at the Canal Lock Park and appropriately named the Canal Music Fest.

In 2011, the event moved to City Park but the name stayed the same. While the size and the location have changed over the past five years—our commitment to this free, family-friendly music event has not. We remain committed to providing this opportunity for friends and family to get together and enjoy great music, delicious food and a good, old-fashioned sense of community.  Due to the generosity of sponsors and presented by The Tipp City Area Arts Council this show is free.  Doors open at 6pm  and the show will begin at 7:30 pm for the Saturday, June 13th Canal Music Fest. Food and beverages available beginning at 6pm.

Wilmington Celebrates The Banana Split!

June 9, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

bansplitThe nation’s only Banana Split Festival pays homage to simpler times with rock ‘n’ roll, cruise ins, crafts and rides were the ultimate in family entertainment.  Kicking off this Friday, June 12th from 4-10pm and Sat from 10am – 10pm, the festival, hosted by local Rotary clubs, donates all the proceeds to charity.
For directions and more  check the BananaSplitFestival website.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN
In downtown Wilmington, there used to be a restaurant called Hazard’s. The proprietor of the restaurant was Ernest Hazard. Like most merchants in Wilmington today he wanted to find a way to attract the students of Wilmington College to come to his restaurant.

It was a very blustery winter in 1907, so business was slow and the employees didn’t have a whole lot of work to do. So Hazard  decided that a good way to get some business was to create a new dish that was so unique everyone would want to try it. So he offered to furnish unlimited ingredients to the employees and have a contest to see who could come up with the most unusual dish.

splitSurprisingly enough, the winner of the contest was Ernest Hazard. He took a long dessert dish, arranged a peeled banana and three scoops of ice cream in it, and added a shot of chocolate syrup, a little strawberry jam, and a few bits of pineapple. On top of this, he sprinkled some ground nuts, and garnished his invention with a mountain of whipped cream and two red cherries on its peak.

Festival goers will still enjoy the many food booths and craft and collectible booths promoting the 50s and 60s, a classic car cruise in, games for the entire family, and free entertainment. But the highlight for most will be the “build your own” banana split booth.
