Both bars are dedicated to staying local, and providing unforgettable experiences to every guest. Each bar will be 6,200 square feet and plan to open next summer. Pending township approvals, the construction of the bars will begin In October.
“The addition of the restaurants and live entertainment is going to energize the nightlife scene at Austin Landing,” said Marketing Director Kayla Long. This is a great fit for Austin Landing. One of the most spectacular times of the year in Ohio, you definitely want to get outside and be active while enjoying nature’s art. Lace up your hiking boots and get ready for an action packed Saturday!

Edible & Useful Plant Walk

The first of three hikes on Saturday, September 26 is an Edible Plant Walk at the Glen. Discover Ohio’s bounty of edible and useful plants with Dave Jansen. This is walk will teach participants how to  identify all of the edible and/or useful plants along a selected trail by using the five senses. This is a very useful skill to have, especially for all of you campers out there! The cost of this event is free for Glen Helen members and only $5 for nonmembers. The hike begins at 2:00 p.m. and finishes at 3:00 p.m. Plenty of time to enjoy Saturday morning before heading out to the Springs for all three of these incredible experiences!

Acoustic Ecology Hike & Listening Session

The second of three hikes  is an Acoustic Ecology trip around the Glen, how cool! Join audio professional, Madeline Fix-Hanson on a walk through the Glen to collect recordings of nature’s symphony. Following the hike there will be wine and light refreshments and then a listening session of the day’s findings. Group size is limited, so early registration is strongly encouraged. The cost of this amazing experience is $5 for Glen Helen members and $10 for nonmember admission. The hike takes off at 5:00 p.m. and finishes at 7:30 p.m. The perfect way to spend the early evening learning about nature’s music!

The third and final hike on Saturday is truly going to be a  remarkable affair! The Squash Soup Tasting & Full Moon Hike will take place at the Glen from 9:00 pm until 11:00 pm.  Tickle your taste buds with a sampling of seasonal squash soup (vegan option available) before stepping out for a guided hike under the Harvest Moon with naturalist Paul Sampson. This is going to be a very special evening with the first moon of the fall season. Registration is required, for Glen Helen members this is free, and for nonmembers the cost is just $5. Eat from the earth and then go out and enjoy the breathtaking night sky and Harvest Moon! What a way to end a fall day!

After 42 years, “Rejects” Play Farewell Show Friday

September 24, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

The Rejects playing at the Rock n Green Tomato Festival

What do you get when you mix some local teachers, drums, guitars, a keyboard and couple of kazoos?  The answer is the iconic, family friendly band that has been entertaining fans at special events and festivals since 1973.  The Rejects, however, are disbanding as a couple of members are moving out of state for retirement.  All good things must come to an end.

As a result, Friday, Sept 25th from 4pm – 7pm, The Rejects will play their last Happy Hour concert at The Soft Rock Cafe at  877 E. Franklin Street in Centerville.  Free Pizza will be served to attendees.. and of course there will be drink specials.

Known for playing classic rock, oldies and even some new hits, The Reject’s shows are never short on talent, humor or fun.

It all started 42 years ago when some Centerville teachers Dan Hill and Steve Flaum, joined with Dan’s brother, the drummer.  Over the years the lineup has changed slightly, but the basic core have remained.  Gary Knight of “The Fries” was once a part of the band, and the addition of Beth Hill many years ago allowed keyboards and more vocal variety into the repertoire.

In 1994, the band was inducted into the Kazoo Hall of Fame for their special contributions to “Kazoo Rock.”   But make no mistake, this is a great live Rock n Roll band.  People of all ages dance and sing along with the hits of the group.  Lots of gags apply such as Mr Flaum aka Dr Humm’s “severed mannequin hand” holding the microphone to the mic stand.  Or a suitcase marked BRAIN in a humorous misspelling of Brian Hinder’s name.  Who can forget the “You’re Sixteen” sing-a-long” where the band holds up signs of “60” during the lyrics, suggesting ” You’re 60, you’re beautiful and you’re mine” as a sign of the times.

From festivals to parties, from amphitheaters to bars, and even gymnasiums, The Rejects have kept a busy schedule over the years.  They have entertained thousands and thousands of people from the Miami Valley and beyond.  First performing to friends and students, to family members and just overall fans, the band now finds themselves performing to kids of their students and the band’s grandkids.  Far from rejects, the band members have proven themselves as pillars in the Dayton area communities.

The Rejects in Concert !

My how time has flown and The Rejects fan base has proved strong through each generation.  Make sure you don’t miss this final concert celebration at Soft Rock Cafe  with free pizza!

DON’T FORGET or MISS THIS SHOW !

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

WHAT: REJECT’S LAST HAPPY HOUR CONCERT

WHEN: FRIDAY NIGHT, SEPT 25th 4pm-7pm

WHERE: SOFT ROCK CAFE in Centerville at 877 E. Franklin Street.

We are former students and fans, and it is with heartfelt sadness and admiration that we will be attending the band’s last  Centerville performance tomorrow.  But, we also want to say  “Thank You,” to Dan, Steve, Beth and the rest of the band.  Thank you,  for teaching us about life, music and so much more.  Best of luck in all you do, from your adoring fans … THE REJECTS RULE !

Subterranean hosts the Intergalactic Meltdown Saturday night at Jimmie's Ladder 11

Subterranean hosts the Intergalactic Meltdown Saturday night at Jimmie’s Ladder 11

Subterranean, a local band on the rise, is hosting their 4 year anniversary with an epic show: The Intergalactic Meltdown! The name comes from their friends The Big Black Galactic, from Sandusky, who will be sharing the stage with the Sub-T boys for this special event.

“The Big Black Galactic will have you ebbing and flowing in the intergalactic with their dance worthy improvisation and then Subterranean will continue to meltdown your faces with their intense and provocative sounds” states the band’s event page. I’m a huge fan of technical improvisation, and I couldn’t be more excited for this show!

How to go? Head over to Jimmie’s Ladde11407107_729283640516998_8663440705574607392_nr 11, on Saturday September 26th, and pay usual $5 cover charge. What you’ll get in musical value is so much more! Definitely worth the cover.

And…. It’s my birthday! Celebrate with me and one of my fave local bands, and we celebrate our personal new years!

You don’t want to miss this one!

Five People in Fitness You Ought to be Reading

September 23, 2015 By Jason Harrison

IMG_0555-300x300

Jason reading up on healthy living

When I say “fitness writing” to you, what usually comes to mind? For many people it’s the glossy magazines in the grocery checkout featuring sexy abs, impossible tiny bikini bottoms, and provocative poses.

I’ll let you in on a little secret. The smartest, strongest people I know in the fitness game hardly ever read those magazines. That’s not to belittle the glossies or dismiss their function: I’ll grab the ten sexy tips men’s magazine for a long flight just like anyone else. But The general point is that busy people with complicated jobs or lives don’t have time to seek out a broader range of information, so they rely on those periodicals. Allow me then to introduce you to a broader range of information.

iPad-eBook-ReaderI’ve compiled a list of the people whose material I find myself most often sharing with clients or using for my own fitness. My hope is that the list isn’t quite what you’re expecting. Sure, you’ll find some exercise tips, but you’ll also find the intersection of economics and food, empathy, and elite-level powerlifting. Try following some of these experts on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram and see if the way you think about health and fitness doesn’t evolve. Everyone on this list has made me a better coach through the sheer quantity of free, concise, and thoughtful material they’ve given to the public.

For the record, none of these people could pick me out of a lineup, and I’ve never met any of them. But their public personas at least are helpful, practical, and sometimes even a little soulful.

Kelly McGonigal — McGonigal’s 2013 TED Talk called “How to make stress your friend” dramatically shifted the way I coach my clients. The basic premise behind her research and talk is that how we think about stress can alter its impact on our lives. She emphasizes the positive effect of empathy and caring for others on our own lives and health, and makes a strong claim that “the harmful effects of stress on your health are not inevitable.”

Jen Sinkler — What distinguishes Sinkler from a lot of the fitness crowd is not just her national-level rugby experience, her competitive powerlifting experience, or even the fact that she’s helped puncture the stereotypes of what a sexy woman is “supposed” to look like. What distinguishes Sinkler from the rest of the crowd is that she can write her ass off. Sinkler’s approach to fitness is inclusive, fun, and when the time is right–intense. Not a bad combination.

Roberto Ferdman — Ferdman writes about food, culture, and economics for the Washington Post in a way that elevates the discussion surrounding the latest health studies beyond banal attempts at provocation. When he writes about studies—such as in two really fantastic articles about poverty and nutrition here and here—he adds context, nuance, and reporting. You know, journalism. He’s not a “fitness writer,” but if you care about public policy’s impact on health you ought to be reading him.

ChadSmith

Chad Wesley Smith

Juggernaut Training Systems — This is where I go when I want to learn how to get stronger. The view I have of my own lane of the road is that I help translate information from guys like Juggernaut founder Chad Wesley Smith—whose carnival-like Instagram feed regularly features him squatting 800 pounds, bench pressing 500 pounds, and deadlifting well over 700 pounds—to regular folks like teachers and lawyers. I borrow heavily from his programming to fuel my own workouts and my efficacy as a coach grew exponentially the day I discovered his material online. If you want to know strong, get to know Juggernaut. You might not get to a 700-pound deadlift, but you can use his training principles nonetheless.

ebook-pick-things-upTony Gentilcore — Like Sinkler, Gentilcore is a strong writer and strong coach with a background in athletic performance. His website regularly features a roundup of solid fitness material he calls “Stuff to Read While You’re Pretending to Work.” His online persona is helpful, detail-oriented, and serious without any of the brotastic bravado you might expect from someone as accomplished and physically strong as he is.

Mayor Whaley Honored by Million Women Mentors

September 22, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

10608528_10152774128353969_8070945395932803971_oDayton Mayor Nan Whaley was honored by Million Women Mentors (MWM) at its inaugural summit and gala in Washington, D.C., on September 21.

Mayor Whaley was presented with the organization’s first annual Mayor Award for her work and focus on education and workforce development through the City of Learners initiative.

MWM supports the engagement of one million science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) mentors to increase the interest and confidence of girls and women to persist and succeed in STEM programs and careers.

“I am honored to be the first recipient of this award,” said Mayor Whaley. “I know that Dayton’s future growth is dependent on having a quality workforce and women and girls in STEM are a key part of that equation. As mayor, I am committed to working with our businesses and schools to ensure that Dayton can compete in the new global economy.”

MWM credited Mayor Whaley with her call to action to Ohio mayors to develop programming and opportunities for young girls and women in the area of STEM education.

MWM also highlighted the mayor’s work with the Women’s Leadership Collaborative of Greater Dayton, a community effort to cultivate and support women leaders in government, academia, nonprofit organizations and business, as well as developing and championing programs such as the Dayton Region Manufacturing Task Force, a regional effort committed to advocating for manufacturing and promoting a strong manufacturing workforce.

15 MUST EATS at DAYTON’s OKTOBERFEST

September 22, 2015 By Dayton937 1 Comment

The Cream Puff from Schmidt’s – our #1 Item

This weekend mark’s one of Dayton’s biggest festivals and Food Adventures of the year, …Oktoberfest!

Held at the Dayton Art Institute, it is a plethora of Beer, Crafts, Cigars and Food.  Some blogs will give you tips on parking, but The Big Ragu, Hungry Jax and Chef House have been eating and drinking their way through this festival for about 40 years.  So who better than the Food Adventure Crew to sort through the food with their hundreds of thousands of calories in expertise?

Grab your lederhosen and let’s dive in….

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

WHAT: Dayton’s 44th Annual Oktoberfest, a celebration of German food and culture

WHERE:  The Dayton Art Institute, 456 Belmonte Park North, Dayton Ohio

WHEN:

— FRI, SEPT. 25th – PREVIEW PARTY SPECIAL EVENT – 7pm-11pm, COST $95 at the gate

— SAT, SEPT. 26th –  Noon – 11:00 pm, COST $7 at the  gate

— SUN, SEPT. 27th – Noon – 7pm, COST $7 at the gate

Now you know where to be and when.   So bring some money and get your eat on… Dayton’s Oktoberfest, where everyone is German for the day !

Get Pumpkin or Apple Strudel at The Strudel Factory Booth

Drum roll and Accordion intro … here we go with our patented feature, the Dayton Oktoberfest’s 2015 “MUST EATS !”

MUST EATS:

— #1  SCHMIDT’S CREAM PUFFS:
Of course the #1 item is one so creamy and rich, you will pass out from pleasure.  The line might be long, but the end result is worth it.  Grab one of these huge cream puffs from Schmidt’s Booth, all the way from Columbus.  The cream puff is as big as half your head, and more delicious than 100 movie stars.

— #2  CHERRY or PUMPKIN STRUDEL from THE ORIGINAL STRUDEL FACTORY:
Another OMG moment at the festival, is when you introduce your friends to this little number.  Hungry Jax and The Big Ragu agree that  the Apple Strudel  and Pumpkin Strudel steal the show.  The food lines are not bad at this booth , and the strudel is fresh out of the oven.

— #3  THE BRATWURST in the METTS and BRATS TENT:
We are not sure if these are a German Club item or Dayton Art Institute.. we just know with a little sauerkraut, or Dusseldorf mustard, these babies go great with beer.  Chef House’s pick of the fest.  She could hang out in this booth all night, and with the beer trucks of course!

— #4  THE GERMAN POTATO PANCAKES from THE “HEY HEY” FOOD BOOTH:
Giant, delicious and cheap.  Unfortunately everyone knows about these, so the line is a little long sometimes.  Don’t fret, good things come to those who wait, and it’s not like the line to the Beast at Kings Island. But these big potato cakes are beasts in themselves.

— #5  THE GERMANATOR at ZOMBIE DOGZ:
Dayton’s #1 food truck rolls in with this hot dog smothered in braised beef brisket, beer cheese and topped with fried onions.  Another original item, where they knock it out of the park.  Fight the line, and get the rewards of this one of a kind, big wiener.  What’s on your zombie?

Pulled Chicken Sandwich from Smokin Bar-B-Que – Add some of their excellent BBQ Sauce !

— #6  THE PULLED CHICKEN SANDWICH from SMOKIN’ BAR-B-QUE
This Oregon District mainstay, comes in with an entry like a lightning bolt.  The pulled chicken is perfectly cooked, but the secret is in the sauce.  All foodies know that a condiment table can be where the magic happens and puts the ying to the yang.  In this case it is true.  Find the extra BBQ sauce bottle and squirt some more on your sandwich.  Close the bun, take a bite.  If some sauce drips on your finger, just get a canvas and hang an inspired finger painting in the art museum.

— #7  THE SOFT PRETZEL BOOTH:
Happiness is a warm pretzel.  We are talking so fresh you can hardly hold it.  We mean it, right out of the oven into a napkin, to warming your heart.  Soft inside, with the perfect outer crust, this pretzel is meant for some mustard and beer.  Warning:  you might crave a second one later in the night.

— #8 THE CRAB CAKES from BROCK MASTERSONS:  Seared on a flat grill, these gargantuan crab cakes are the best in town.  So good, that you will want two.  Also a thumbs up for the sauce served with the cakes.  It is the perfect touch and very tasty.  The crab cakes are full of flavor and worth the treat.

Chicken on a Stick from Bangkok House – Shockingly good !

— #9  THE HAMBURGER at THE HAMBURGER WAGON: Hamburg, Germany.. that’s a town, right?  Well this Hamburger Wagon is as old as many towns.  Finishing their 103rd year, it is fair to say they are a Dayton icon.  We suggest the Double Burger, it is our newest rage at the wagon.  And as always “they don’t need no stinkin’ condiments.”

— #10 CHICKEN ON A STICK at BANGKOK HOUSE BOOTH:
The strange looking skewer, the incredible smell off the grill.  This busy booth sells all kinds of specialties, but the one to grab is the Chicken on a Stick. The marinated chicken comes out perfectly grilled and the result is a cross between somewhere between tender chicken, and other bites having a slight jerky feel to it.  A “must eat at Oktoberfest !

The Huge German Potato Pancakes from “Hey Hey” food booth !

— #11  THE SUPERFOODS BURGER at BRIXX:
Quinoa, spinach, avocados, cranberries and turkey  A surprise Food Adventure on a bun that we weren’t expecting.  Chris Bhai has done it again with his “out of the box” thinking. ion a burger?  YES! But the best thing is the taste!

— #12  THE PUB CHEESE FRIES from DUBLIN PUB:
Most Daytonians are familiar with these rich sinful cheese fries.  These hunger busting pub fries, topped with cheese and bacon, deserve a spot on the list.  Everytime we order these we find people reaching into our basket and snagging a bite.  Grab a batch of these hometown favorites. The are Chef House’s guilty little pleasure!

Dublin Pub’s Cheese Fries have become Legendary

— #13  THE WIENERSCHNITZEL SANDWICH from the GERMAN SCHNITZEL BOOTH:
Pretty much a fried pork tenderloin looking sandwich.  It is a good sized sandwich that is easily shared.  There is also schnitzel under the Brats and Metts tent in the German Food line.  I’m sure a cabbage roll or potatoes would go good with this.

— #14  THE TRADITONAL GYRO from the GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH BOOTH:
So you thought Greek Fest was your last chance in 2015 to get these?  Think again!  Take advantage of this rare chance to get the same gyros served at Greek Fest.  The only other time you can find these is at World a ‘Fair,  We recommend the traditional gyro with everything on it.  We feel it is much more flavorful than the chicken gyro.

Hot, fresh, soft pretzels for sale at Oktoberfest

—  #15  THE ROADHOUSE PORK CHOP from THE BLACKJACK GRILL:
A giant pork chop, plus a huge grill means the most eye appealing site at the festival.  There is nothing quite like watching these huge porkchops cook.  Served as a sandwich or by themselves, this is your chance to get a big slab of meat for yourself.  Dab it with some of the Blackjack BBQ sauce and it’s time to go to town.

Honorable Mention: The Cabbage Rolls and Saeurkraut Balls are also Food Adventure favorites.

There you have it!  Our lists of the 15 Oktoberfest foods that need to meet your mouth this weekend.  Did we miss any?  What are your favorites that we should have mentioned?  Please comment!

Also, browse our photo gallery below for killer pictures of the MUST EATS !

As for beer choices, you are on your own, we are having a food baby and can’t be bothered.  But if you want more foodie news, from the Miami Valley’s Food Adventures blog, then “like us on Facebook HERE.

Money Management Exhibit Opens at Centerville Library

September 20, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

moneysmartsexhibitKids and teens can learn to become great money managers thanks to a new exhibit that debuts at Washington-Centerville Public Library on September 21st. Money $marts, an interactive, traveling exhibit designed and constructed with the help of Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, teaches kids and teens about earning, saving and spending money.
The exhibit, which remains on display at Centerville Library at 111 W. Spring Valley Road through October 31st, gives parents a great opportunity to talk to their children about being financially responsible. Four panels, addressing money concepts appropriate for children and teens ages 3-18, feature fun financial games and interactive elements to create a hands-on experience.

A series of programs and contests will reinforce the exhibit’s financial literacy concepts and serve as a springboard for parent-child conversations about financial responsibility. Programs include a game night where teens can play money-based board games to test their pricing knowledge in a “shopping spree” and a parent/child program featuring money-related activities and crafts. Money-themed kits of library materials are also available for checkout.

Oct 2nd 7-9pm   After-Hours Teen Game Night

Join us for an after-hours night of games to see how money smart you are!  Participate in a “shopping spree” to win prizes, play jeopardy, trivia, board games, and video games while you eat snacks and spend time with friends.  Open to grades 6 – 12.

Nov 2nd 7-8pm  Money Makers

It’s never too early to start teaching children about money! Enjoy parent/child activities centered around counting, making, and saving money. For Preschool – Grade 5.

After its debut appearance at the Centerville Library, the exhibit will travel to the Springfield location of Boonshoft Museum of Discovery where it will be on display November 6 – January 3, 2016. After that time, schools and other libraries throughout the region may reserve the exhibit for display by contacting the Library at 433-8091.  wcpllogo

This exhibit and related programs are made possible by a grant from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation through Smart investing@your library®, a partnership with the American Library Association. Washington-Centerville Public Library was one of 21 recipients nationwide to be awarded a Smart investing@your library® grant by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor Education Foundation and the American Library Association (ALA). “The Library is honored to be part of such an elite group, and we’re excited to improve patrons’ access to and understanding of financial information,” said Shelly Peresie, Youth Services Team Leader and project principal for the grant.

Dayton’s First Mass Meditation!

September 19, 2015 By LIbby Ballengee

I recently saw a Twitter post about a mass meditation happening in New York City, at Central Park. I thought it was such a neat idea, I re-tweeted with the quote: “This would be cool for Dayton to do!” Other Dayton residents thought it was a great idea too. Social media butterfly, Kayla Bradstreet, sent me a private message and encouraged me to organize this event. Knowing the fall equinox was coming up, it felt like a perfect time for such an event.

That’s how the ball started rolling, and in the process we were introduced to the Natural Path Meditation Center in Beavercreek. Bryan Suddith, who is running for Kettering City Council, made the connection for us. Everything fell into place once we connected with NPMC. The meditation trainers there, Anjali Mediratta Brannon and Uma Mullapudi, instantly were on board to help. When local yoga guru, Melissa Ledinsky, signed on to lead the optional yoga portion of the program, I knew this was meant to be!

How to go?

Dayton's first Mass Meditation is happening 9/23, on the Fall Equinox

TIFF 2015 Day #9 – My Final Day!

September 18, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

Youth-poster-newHello Everyone,

Today was my last day of screenings, and even though I feel like I’ve been away for months, I’m actually a little sad to be packing my bags.  There are several films I didn’t get a chance to see, and every year I think I’m going to take part more in the industry activities (indiewire talks, a variety of lectures, etc.) – but I don’t.  I just end up cramming in movies.

First off today, I saw STONEWALL, directed by Roland Emmerich.  This film was lambasted before anyone saw it.  Criticism soared across the web based only on the trailer, and I must admit that I went into this screening with very low expectations…and I was pleasantly surprised.  Though not a masterpiece by a long shot, it’s better than I anticipated.  The story of the actual Stonewall Riots is only a portion of this coming-of-age tale about a young guy kicked out of his home and now living on the streets of NYC with numerous other LGBT youth.  This is a fictional story set in the midst of some recognizable events and characters, and despite some giggles at some inappropriate moments (due to trite material) it worked emotionally for several people around me in the cinema.

YOUTH is director Paul Sorrentino’s follow-up to his masterpiece THE GREAT BEAUTY.  It’s a lovely film about two long-time friends (Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel) vacationing in the Swiss Alps.  Though not much “happens,” there’s a lot of discussion about life – both present and past, and there is an abundance of cinematic poetry.  The two men are on different paths.  One is finishing a screenplay for what should be his next great film and the other is retired with no intention of returning to his work (even at the request of the Queen of England).  Though perhaps a bit too avant garde for some, I devoured this film and its interesting gaze.

My last film of the festival was THE WITCH, directed by Robert Eggers.  This period thriller/horror film set in 1630’s New England was a smash at Sundance, and I have to admit that I have a secret thing for witches.  From Margaret Hamilton to Angelic Huston, from Shakespeare’s “double double, toil and trouble” to Miller’s trials – I’ve always been fascinated by them. Though stylish and sometime startling, The performances and period details are very well executed, the cinematography is moody and beautifully done, and there are some genuinely haunting moments…but something wasn’t working for me.  Perhaps the score which purposefully misguides us numerous times helped to create a distrust in the storytelling – I’m not entirely sure what was creating the disconnect for me. That said, as much as this film is about a witch, it’s even more about paranoia and distrust and a creepy devotion to the Bible.  During the Q&A, we heard the director talk about all of his research for this film – from court documents and diaries from that era to architectural elements, his knowledge of the subject made me appreciate the film a bit more.  I think this film will certainly find a devoted audience…but I wasn’t 100% sold.

And now it’s time to pack my bags.  I’ve met some great people during this trip – critics that write for international publications, people who curate festivals in other markets and numerous lovers of cinema.  I’ve seen old friends, I’ve had good food, I’ve seen numerous movie stars and famous directors, and I’ve watched 34 movies.  It’s been a blast. Thanks for checking in on me.

I hope to see you soon.  All the best,

Jonathan

Friday 6:00 PM – “Falling Up”  (K12 Gallery)
A thrilling mix of stop animation and and illustrations, this short was written and directed by New York filmmaker and Stivers School for the Arts grad, Djuna Wahlrab.(15 min.)- 06:30 PM – “N. Dixie Drive” A mid length doc about life on the North Dixie strip. This is the first film from New York filmmaker / musician and native Daytonion, Eric Mahoney. Mahoney was also a member of the Dayton band “Murder Your Darlings.” This film also features music from Northridge’s favorite son, Robert Pollard.(52 min.)

Saturday 5:00 PM – “The Rubi Girls”  (K12 Gallery)
Award winning short doc of Dayton, Ohio drag troupe and entertainers, The Rubi Girls. 2015 marked the troupes 30th. anniversary of raising funds, (over 1 million dollars at last count), and awareness for AIDS research. Directed by filmmaker, Rubi Girl member and General Manager of Dayton’s Neon Movies, Jonathan McNeal. (28 min.)

Saturday 5:45 PM – “Bubble” (K12 Gallery)
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, this was a film that broke a few rules for its day. One of the first feature films to be shot on high-definition video, the cast was comprised of non-professional actors recruited from the Parkersburg, West Virginia / Belpre, Ohio area, where the film was shot. Using improvised scripting and mostly natural lighting, the backdrop for this psycho thriller murder mystery is an eerie doll factory. Also unconventional was Soderberghs approach to distribution. Pre-dating web networks,”Bubble” was released simultaneously in movie theaters
