Dive Bar Tuesday: Dog’s Breath Tavern

January 19, 2016 By Brian Petro

Fat Heads and pool? What more do you need?

Fat Heads and pool? What more do you need?

Last week was cold. And snowy. So when we were looking for a dive bar to visit, we wanted something relatively central. There are many in the area that we have been to, but one I had always been curious about but had not explored. Well, not since I moved to the great city of Dayton, and it was better known as Alan’s Billiard’s and Brew. When it was Alan’s, I remember pool tables as far as the eye could see and beer that was exactly what beer should be: inexpensive and cold. I don’t remember much in the way of food, but who needed it? It would just ruin the flow of beer and pool.

Bits and pieces of it became the new Dog’s Breath Tavern (1912 E. Whipp Rd, Kettering, OH), which after a brief stint with a previous owner was relaunched under new ownership just over a year ago. This is where we chose to head over for our Dive Bar Tuesday. We had not heard anything about the bar, but the parking lot was always full when we drove by. People more hip to the Dayton food scene, namely The Food Adventures Crew, explored the food and gave it their stamp of approval. Normally there are football games on, people on stage belting out karaoke favorites, and bands testing the limits of the sound system. The bartenders would be taking care of customers like pros, and games of pool and darts would be going on.

Unless it is a week night during the first real snowfall of winter. Then there are a handful of people chatting warmly at the largely empty bar. Much of what we found out about the weekend shenanigans was from the bartender that night. He was incredibly friendly and informative, as well as multi-talented. Not only was he the bartender, but the cook as well. There are several dart boards for metal tipped play and some pool tables that were enjoying some action the evening we were there. Checking out the signs around the bar, there is something interesting going on every night; beer specials, trivia, 2 4 2’s Day (a wide variety of $2.42 specials on Tuesday evening, and karaoke to kick off the weekend. The one that caught our eye was the food truck rally. They have a kitchen (more on that in a few sentences), but they are willing to support local businesses and bring food trucks to a place where few are going to tread. The only other place I have seen food trucks in this area is Eudora Brewing.

So much room for activities...

So much room for activities…

During an evening of drinking, you are going to get hungry. Fortunately, they have a kitchen to take care of that for you. The menu consists of solid bar fare like burgers, wings, and appetizers like jalapeno poppers and cheese sticks. We had to try the burger (of course), their signature Dog Bones (egg rolls filled with an assortment of unique fillings), and one other thing. Since we were enjoying beers that night, we also added the pretzel bites. What goes better with beer than pretzels? The burger (which came with chips) was lovely. We tried the Barbecue Pulled Pork Dog Bones, and were impressed with the flavor, though there was a lack of traditional barbecue sauce. The pretzel bites…well, we were really unsure about them, so we had to get a second order. For evaluating purposes, of course.

Did we mention beer? They had an excellent selection of beer, from the ones you would expect every bar to have to local favorites like Yellow Springs and Warped Wing. Their selection of craft beers is a fine one, and the ones we had went down well. You have your choice of taps which are always rotating, bottles, and cans of other favorites. If you want to keep up with the beers they have, you can find them on BeerMenus and keep tabs on their changes. The bartender knew his way around the taps and bottles, which is a good thing. The impressive chalk board and printed menus on the table had not been updated in a while. There is a cocktail menu as well, filled with comfortable favorites like the classic Dirty Martini and Cosmopolitan. The staff has added their own unique cocktails like the Dog Gone Good Martini and the DBT Bulldog for good measure.

We are planning on making a return trip in the future, and not just because of convenience. The atmosphere was friendly and the food was delightful. Did we mention the pretzel bites? There will be other beers to explore the next time we step in, and a few cocktails to try out as well. I am not sure anyone in our group is going to step up for karaoke, but when the pool tournament starts up, count us in!

$500 Prize for ERMA BOMBECK Writing Competition

January 19, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

erma_hdrlogo-400x246Writers around the world are encouraged to capture the spirit of famed Dayton writer Erma Bombeck by submitting an online entry in the Erma Bombeck Writing Competition, sponsored by Washington-Centerville Public Library in conjunction with the University of Dayton. The contest runs through 8 am (EST), Monday, Feb. 15.

The competition, held every two years, pays tribute to hometown writer Erma Bombeck, one of the greatest humorists of the 20th century and arguably the University of Dayton’s most famous graduate.

Entries should be 450 words or fewer. Essays submitted may not have been previously published (either print or online).

One Dayton, Ohio-area winner and one global winner will be awarded a $500 prize in each of two categories — humor and human interest — for a total of four prizes. These winners also will receive a free registration ($425 value) to the sold-out March 31-April 2 Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop at the University of Dayton.

One entry per person will be accepted. All winning essays will be published on the library’s website, as well as in the Dayton Daily News and in the workshop’s printed program. Those receiving honorable mentions will receive certificates.

The entries will be blind judged by a panel of authors, syndicated columnists and experienced writers. Winners will be announced in mid-March with a celebration event set for 7 pm, Wednesday, March 30, at the Centerville Library featuring Gina Barreca, author, humorist, syndicated columnist and professor of English literature and feminist theory at the University of Connecticut. The awards ceremony is free and open to the public.

erma-bombecks-quotes-6“Although it may have seemed effortless, Erma worked very hard as a writer,” said Debe Dockins, Erma Bombeck Writing Competition coordinator. “She practiced every day, and she just got better and better. She stuck to her tried-and-true formula: ‘Hook ‘em with the lead, hold ‘em with laughter. Exit with a quip they won’t forget!’ And that’s exactly the essence we ask entrants to the Erma Bombeck Writing competition to capture in their essays.”

In 2014, 853 writers from 48 states and 13 countries entered the contest, spilling out roughly 382,500 words. Nancy Cartwright — the voice of Bart Simpson — and a slate of accomplished writers from around the country and Canada judged the entries.

Previous contest winners are encouraged to apply.  The contest is not open to children under 13, Washington-Centerville Public Library employees and board members, contest judges and their families, and Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop faculty and speakers for the current year.

For complete writing competition guidelines, an online entry form or more information, visit www.wclibrary.info/erma/index.asp.  Information about the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop can be found at www.humorwriters.org.

Moving Pictures: A History Of Cinema In Four Acts

January 19, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

the-history-of-cinema-1-638In conjunction with Antioch College’s course on the History of Cinema, professors Charles Fairbanks and Kelly Gallagher have curated four programs to lead viewers through the medium’s history, and (re-)introduce you to essential artworks from across the spectrum. Each film will be introduced and contextualized historically, in order to give attendees an understanding of its historical and artistic significance in cinematic history at The Little Art Theater in Yellow Springs. Each showing runs $5.

CharlesFairbanks2

Charles Fairbanks

Charles Fairbanks is in the process of completing his first feature film, a hybrid documentary about a Mexican shaman who falls under the spell of a pyramid-scheme-marketed nutritional supplement. A Guggenheim fellow, Fairbanks teaches Media Arts at Antioch College.

Kelly Gallagher is an experimental animator and filmmaker interested in handcrafted filmmaking and exploring the ways that animation can be used to visualize stories of resistance. She currently resides in Ohio, where she is an Assistant Professor of Media Arts at Antioch College.

The program includes:

Battleship_Potemkin-2-768x5137pm Sun, Jan 24:   Sergei Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin (1925)
preceded by a Buster Keaton short!

Once banned in many nations – including its native Soviet Union – Battleship Potemkin was long considered the greatest film ever made. As Eisenstein’s chef d’oeuvre, Potemkin manifests his influential theories about editing film to shock viewers into action.

7pm Sun, Feb 7:  Gene Kelly in Stanley Donen’s  Singin’ in the Rain (1952)
preceded by a short film by Maya Deren!

Hollywood’s tongue-in-cheek, musical self-portrait of studio film production during the transition from ‘silent’ film to ‘talkies.’ Consistently ranked as one of the best films – and the top musical – of all time, “Singin’ in the Rain represents the musical genre at its most energetic and ambitious.

7pm Sun, Feb 21:  John Cassevetes’s indie classic  Woman Under the Influence (1974)
with a short film by Stan Brakhage

Starring Peter Falk and Gena Rowlands in “two of the most harrowing screen performances of the 1970s,” this “uncompromising portrait of domestic turmoil details the emotional breakdown of a suburban housewife and her family’s struggle to save her from herself. This landmark American film is perhaps the most beloved work from the extraordinary John Cassavetes.” – Criterion Collection

7pm Sun, March 6:  Claire Denis’s  Beau Travail (1999)p24877_d_v8_aa
with a short film TBD

“Loosely based on Billy Budd, Sailor by Herman Melville, Beau travail focuses on an ex-Foreign Legion officer (Denis Lavant) as he recalls his once glorious life, leading troops in Africa.” – Mubi

“Denis and her team create a fixed, timeless world of mysterious, balletic rites, rippled with simmering homoerotic tensions. The intensity of mood and thematic resonance both derive almost entirely from the poetic juxtaposition of music and the stunning images of beauty and sustained, even surreal strangeness. Prepare to be blown away.” – TimeOut London

Chicago to headline 160th Great Darke County Fair

January 18, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

The Directors for The Great Darke County Fair are pleased to announce that Chicago will headline the Sunday, August 21st concert during the 160th Great Darke County Fair.

Hailed as one of the “most important bands in music since the dawn of the rock and roll era” by former President Bill Clinton, the legendary rock and roll band with horns, Chicago, came in at #9, the highest charting American band in Billboard Magazine’s Hot 200 All-Time Top Artists. And Chicago is the first American rock band to chart Top 40 albums in six decades.

chicago-1

Chicago will be inducted into the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! This was their first nomination. They’ve been eligible since 1994. A long time coming!

Chicago’s album, Chicago Transit Authority, was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame in 2014, and the band performed on the Grammy stage for the first time that year.

In 2014, a record of new studio tracks, “NOW” CHICAGO XXXVI was released on Frontiers Records. It includes eleven brand new songs, recorded on the road. Chicago has built a new recording system that is flexible, portable, powerful and musical. This new “recording rig” travels with the band. They have even created an online collaboration portal that allows even more performances to be worked on around the clock from remote locations. The CD package is a six-panel digipack with a beautiful 16-page full color lyric booklet.

Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire completed their North American co-headlining summer tour, Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire – Heart And Soul Tour 2015. The 25+ date tour took the Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum selling groups through major U.S. cities including Los Angeles, New York City, Las Vegas, Atlanta and Boston. They will tour together again in Spring, 2016.

“One of the most exciting things about the show is when both bands perform at the end of the concert,” Lee Loughnane of Chicago said. “Having these 21 very talented musicians playing our greatest hits together puts the excitement level at a fever pitch! From the Heart of Chicago and the Soul of Earth, Wind & Fire, it is an unforgettable experience.”

Chicago’s lifetime achievements include a Grammy Award, multiple American Music Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Chicago street dedicated in their honor, and keys to and proclamations from an impressive list of US cities. Record sales top the 100,000,000 mark, and include 21 Top 10 singles, 5 consecutive Number One albums, 11 Number One singles and 5 Gold singles. An incredible 25 of their 36 albums have been certified platinum, and the band has a total of 47 gold and platinum awards.

Chicago have toured every year since the beginning – they’ve never missed a year. The line-up includes original band members Robert Lamm on keyboards, vocals, Lee Loughnane on trumpet and vocals, James Pankow on trombone and Walt Parazaider on woodwinds, as well as Jason Scheff on bass, vocals, Tris Imboden on drums, Keith Howland on guitar and vocals, Lou Pardini on keyboards, vocals and Walfredo Reyes, Jr. on percussion.

For four years, Chicago raised over a quarter of a million dollars to fight breast cancer for the American Cancer Society by having a winning bidder come on stage and sing “If You Leave Me Now” in concert. Chicago generously support other charitable causes, donating a portion of ticket sales to the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation, which seeks a cure for a fatal children’s disease, Niemann-Pick Type C, and Hannah & Friends, an organization that serves children and adults with special needs. Hannah & Friends is the personal mission of Maura Weis and her husband, Charlie Weis, the current coach at the University of Kansas.

From the signature sound of the Chicago horns, their iconic Vocalists, and a few dozen of ever-Classic Songs, this band’s concerts are celebrations. 2016 will mark the band’s 49th consecutive year of touring, without missing a single concert date!

Chicago continue to be true ambassadors for their beloved hometown, carrying the city’s name with pride and dignity around the world. For more information, visit www.chicagotheband.com

Christopher’s Welcomes Chef Don Warfe

January 15, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

MG_4705-300x200

From Right to Left: Chef Chris Robinette, Chef Don Warfe and Chef Ron Brown

Christopher’s is pleased to introduce Chef Don Warfe, their new head dinner chef, and invite you to a very special Meet the Chef Dinner on Wednesday, January 20th.  Formerly of Trolley Stop and Zetland Street, Chef Don will be preparing a three-course menu of modern, healthy, winter comfort fare from 5:00 to 9:00pm and personally greeting each table that orders it.

“As a chef, I’m focused on using fresh, local, seasonal ingredients.  That’s what I’m passionate about” explains Chef Don regarding an approach he describes as innovate, creative culinary art steeped in traditional techniques.  “It’s important to set high standards and meet the expectations of customers while also offering cutting edge meals.”

Indeed, Chef Don arrives at Christopher’s with an impressive background, having trained with some of America’s top chefs in Philadelphia, New York and Colorado before returning to his hometown of Dayton, OH to be close to family.  He describes many adventures, perhaps highlighted by a stint as Chef Consultant for the television show Kitchen Nightmares with Chef Gordon Ramsey.

“I take pride in knowing I do something well” Chef Don continues.  “Fresh, healthy and local cooking often takes more investment of time and energy, but it is worth it to create a higher quality, more nutritious product for customers.  Ingredients are tools for culinary art, much like a painter’s paints or musician’s instruments, and cooking is my craft.”

Visit Christopher’s, located at 2318 E. Dorothy Lane in Kettering, Monday – Saturday: 7:30am – 9pm.

‘Mary Poppins’ Review – Muse Machine – Wondrous Whimsy

January 15, 2016 By Russell Florence, Jr.

muse mary

The Muse Machine presents “Mary Poppins” through Sunday at the Victoria Theatre. Alter High School senior Brianna Russ stars as the high flying, “practically perfect” nanny. (Contributed photo)

In wonderfully uplifting fashion, the mighty Muse Machine has done it again. The arts education organization supplies an outstanding, heartwarming and smile-inducing presentation of the 2006 Tony Award-nominated adaptation of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins,” the Muse’s 32nd annual student musical continuing through Sunday at the Victoria Theatre.

Featuring 150 Muse students from across the Miami Valley and based on the beloved 1964 Academy Award-winning film of the same name and the books by P.L. Travers, “Mary Poppins” absolutely shines due to the simple fact that cohesiveness reigns supreme. Even the Muse’s eye-popping ability to fill the Victoria stage with students galore isn’t cause for crowded concern. In fact, there are so many students featured this time a large ensemble of youngsters confidently storm the aisles to great effect during the climax of the Act 1 showstopper “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” the largest musical number in Muse history. Thankfully, co-directors Lula Elzy, Joe Deer and Douglas Merk, creating one of the breeziest “Poppins” I have seen, once again have a clear understanding of what suits the organization in terms of character and scope.

This touching tale of love, family and reconciliation, adapted by librettist Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”) and set in 1910 England, is remarkably led by Brianna Russ in the sophisticatedly chipper titular role and striking tenor Christian Johnson as friendly chimney sweep Bert. A knockout last year as Nancy in the Muse’s terrific “Oliver!,” the vocally strong Russ returns with aplomb, conveying a beguiling blend of sternness, gleefulness and warmth. Johnson’s breakthrough portrayal recalls the high-kicking magnetism of Gavin Lee who originated Bert in London’s West End and on Broadway. A charming narrator and an agile triple threat, Johnson particularly impresses with aerial acrobatics in the marvelously rhythmic “Step in Time,” one of the most glorious numbers Elzy has choreographed in her 17 years with Muse. He is also vibrantly partnered with Russ in such songs as “Jolly Holiday” and the aforementioned “Super…”

Additionally, the Banks household, forever changed by Mary’s magical influence, is enjoyably grounded in the radiant performances of Mitchell Rawlins (effectively displaying the frustration and transformation of the uptight George), Cecily Dowd (fascinatingly mature beyond her years as the concerned Winifred), Megan Braun (Jane), and the adorable Jamey Paul (Michael). Well-matched Lindsey Smith (Mrs. Brill) and Rollie Fisk (Robertson Ay) provide delightful comic relief. Jack Blair (Northbrook), Leo Deer (Von Hussler), Katie Hubler (Bird Woman), James Fields IV (Neleus), Tyler Hanson (Constable), Jack Lewis (a humorously elderly Bank Chairman), and Mackenzie Wolcott (a formidable Miss Andrew) are noteworthy.

Accented by musical director Claude Lucien Thomas’ robust orchestra, John Rensel’s expert lighting design, and an array of fantastic, colorful period costumes courtesy of coordinators Lyn Baudendistel, Robin Brown, Toni Donato Shade, and Alisa Vukasinovich, “Mary Poppins” is a wondrously whimsical theatrical experience not to be missed.

“Mary Poppins” continues through Jan. 17 at the Victoria Theatre, 138 N. Main St., Dayton. Performances are today at 8 p.m., Saturday at 3 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Act One: 75 minutes; Act Two: 60 minutes. Tickets are $26-$60. Learn To Cook A Taste Of Peru

January 14, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

ChefMargotIf you have not been to Salar, in the Oregon District, you are missing something spectacular. Peru’s traditional dishes carry flavors from Spain, China, Italy, West Africa and Japan. Salar adds classical French technique to create a World-Fusion cuisine that blends the strong French, Peruvian, and Mediterranean influences. Executive chef Margot Blondet came to the United States from her native Peru in 2005. Her menu reflects her love for her home country, as does her generosity. Salar donates ten percent of all food purchases at the Chef’s Table to Kuychi Runa, a charitable organization that helps children living in the mountains of Peru.

McCoy on Movies: Ride Along 2

January 14, 2016 By Tabari McCoy

RIDE ALONG 2
Kevin Hart, Ice Cube team up again for another comedic tale of law and in-laws … But is it it worth it to ride along with them and watch?

“Wanna know how come I got the Hangover role instead of Jackie Chan? Listen closely …” Ben (Kevin Hart, left) and James (Ice Cube) react to the latest revelation of AJ (Ken Jeong) in a scene from director Tim Story’s RIDE ALONG 2. Credit: Quantrell D. Colbert © 2015 Universal Studios. All rights reserved.

WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:

KEY VOICE CAST MEMBERS: Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, Olivia Munn, Benjamin Bratt, Ken Jeong, Olivia Munn, Bruce McGill, Tika Sumpter and Sherri Shepherd

WRITER(S): Phil Hat and Matt Manfredi (written by); Greg Coolidge (characters)

DIRECTOR(S): Tim Story

WEB SITE: http://www.ridealong.com/

60 SECOND PLOT SUMMARY (OR AS CLOSE TO THAT TIME AS ONE CAN MAKE IT): Back for a second adventure after 2014’s surprise box office hit, Ride Along 2 once again stars Kevin Hart as Ben Barber, a video game enthusiast who has finally become a member of the Atlanta Police Dept. … As a low level beat cop. His soon-to-be brother-in-law James (Ice Cube), however, is what Ben really wants to be: A detective. And even though James has softened his stance on his sister Angela (Tika Sumpter) marrying him, he has no qualms about telling Ben he is just not detective material.

Of course, Ben ends up interjecting himself into James’ latest case tracking down a drug dealer who has a mysteriously encrypted flash drive on him. That flash drive leads James to need to travel to Miami to track down a hacker simply named AJ (Ken Jeong), which gives Ben the perfect opportunity to tag – er, make that ride – along with him to show he has what it takes … As well as let Angela and Cori (Sherri Shepherd) finish planning the wedding in peace.

So what happens when Ben and James – a.k.a. the “brothers-in-law” – hit South Beach? As you might expect, nothing goes quite like they expect …

WHO WILL LIKE THIS FILM THE MOST? Die-hard Kevin Hart fans; people who enjoy staring at Olivia Munn; people who like Ken Jeong; people who have spent too many hours playing Grand Theft Auto-style video games

WHO WON’T (OR SHOULDN’T) LIKE THIS MOVIE? People tiring of Hart’s same-natured film projects and/or find them a bit uninspired; people who didn’t like the original Ride Along; Olivia Munn fans who wish she had more to do in the film; Benjamin Bratt fans who think he would be above a project like this

SO, IS IT GOOD, BAD OR ABSOLUTELY AWFUL? “Harmless albeit familiar fun.”Those were the words I found ruminating in my head after finishing Ride Along 2, which attempts to break no new ground while being just entertaining enough to keep you from completely detesting it. It’s by no means a “good” movie by good movie standards, yet it finds a way to keep you watching it the entire time.

Hart and Cube have a weird chemistry – not good, not bad, but … weird. You understand why Cube’s hard-edged James does not like him, for his character has all the same critiques about Hart’s character Ben as many of Hart’s detractors have about him as a real person. (He’s loud, he’s annoying, he’s always doing something when he should just chill out a minute yet while nine things he does are ridiculous, the tenth may be, as Cube’s character says, “genius.”) While there is nothing genius about Ride Along 2 – the thin plot is well, thin, Sherri Shepherd’s role as Ben and Angela’s wedding planner doesn’t really make sense given how she argues with both of them and the less said about the scene with the alligator, the better – director Tim Story delivers a competent enough story to keep you enticed enough to watch it to completion.

Then again, if you’re coming to Ride Along 2, you’ve likely seen Ride Along – which means you likely aren’t coming for the story as much as you are to watch Hart be hyperactive, watch Cube make that scowl he’s made since the days of Amerikkka’s Most Wanted and see Jeong do what he did with the Hangover sequels, Community and what the real-life doctor-turned-stand-up-comic-turned-actor is trying to do on Dr. Ken: Save subpar material with his “Go-for-it” personality. Sadly, Olivia Munn does her best to keep things moving with as Detective Maya Cruz and staying in character … But the character seems just slightly out of place with the Cube/Hart/Jeong dynamic. (The fact she seems to be channeling Stephanie Beatriz’s Rosa Diaz but not as well is also a potential whoopise.)

Director Tim Story has a nice little video game sequence in the film that works, Cube and Hart make their weird chemistry watchable, Sumpter and Munn do the best they can to keep it together and Jeong does enough to make the piece salvageable. It makes Ride Along 2 one of those movies that if you happened to be flipping through the channels on a Saturday afternoon, you’d watch … Until you find something else better to do.

Hopefully, Hart has something better in him – or at least will find it before Ride Along 3 likely gets greenlit and it suffers from sequel-itis even though this one is better than its predecessor – even though that’s not really saying too much. Much like Hart and Cube their respective selves, Ride Along 2 is likable … enough. It’s just not their best work.

CHEERWINE: A North Carolina Legend Comes North

January 13, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

StoreHome-BevsImage

Apparently this bubbly cherry concoction is a big deal and Oinkadoodlemoo BBQ  just proudly announced they will be the first in the area to serve it starting next week, both from the fountain and in 20 ounce bottles at their three locations:  Randolph Plaza on Main Street in Clayton,  and in the lobby of the Key Bank Tower downtown Dayton and in the brand new Miamisburg location that opens next week.

images-34Nicknamed the “Nectar from North Carolina” it was created in 1917 in Salisbury, North Carolina by a general store owner named L.D. Peeler.   This  soft drink with a hint of wild cherry and a bubbly effervescence became an immediate hit. Folks from all around the county came to LD’s store to give it a try.  When the patriarch passed away in 1931, L.D.’s son Clifford took over the company, and, today, Cliff Ritchie, Clifford Sr.’s grandson and the founder’s great-grandson, helms the soda company.  The name actually comes from the drink’s burgundy color and the cheerfulness drinkers experience after that first sip.  But have no fear, there is no wine involved, but it is said to be intensely carbonated, more so than your average soda.

In 1953, President Eisenhower was apparently so overcome with excitement at his first taste of the soda, he was reduced to the two-syllable exclamation, “Ike likes!”, proving that talking about yourself in the third-person always makes you sound like a moron, even if you’re the President.

images-1It was only in the ’90s that Cheerwine became available outside North Carolina, and they only expanded as far as its sister state, South Carolina. Through a recent partnership with Pepsi Bottling Company, Cheerwine has plans to be available in all 50 states.  This stuff is such a big deal that at the Food Lion, a Salisbury, NC-based grocery chain,  you can even get Cheerwine ice creams, sherbets, and cream bars, while a local bakery also makes Cheerwine cakes and the local Krispy Kreme

Tee Up for Greatness Now Recruiting Mentors!

January 13, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

TeeUpLogoTee Up for Greatness is a program developed by RBS/The First Tee and implemented by The First Tee of Greater Miami Valley to positively impact the lives of middle and high school aged youth through sustained, meaningful relationships with adult mentors. Mentors are a part of a team who helps participants build character and life skills through new opportunities, activity-based learning and exposure to the values inherent in the game of golf. In 2016, Tee Up will serve youth in residence at One Way Farm in Fairfield, OH.

Mentors are the key!
Mentors (Coaches) empower participants (Players) to explore options and make their own decisions, two elements that are critical to the development of a youth’s value system. They inspire Players to respect themselves and others, look into the future, set goals and discover their individual potential.

Here’s how it works:
Each Tee Up lesson plan develops from one of The First Tee’s Nine Core Values. The value is reinforced during activities designed to broaden appreciation for a variety of interests – everything from hobbies to home repairs and finance to fine arts. Each session includes segments for learning golf and practicing relaxation techniques. Leading the fun, a range of community and university volunteers team up, while Coaches encourage Players. There’s always a shared meal – time for one-on-one conversations that strengthen bonds.

Dayton Restaurants That Give Back

January 13, 2016 By Dayton937 3 Comments

Chef TJ and Owner Joe Castellano of Amber Rose, one of the most charity supporting restaurants in Dayton

We love living in Dayton, Ohio… a close knit community that pulls together to help their poor, impoverished, down trodden and those suffering temporary crises.   Lots of companies give not only during “the season of giving,” but year round.

Today, Food Adventures takes time to recognize some of the Miami Valley eateries that we have witnessed supporting numerous charities, year after year after year.  These are some of the biggest givers, the most generous folks, but it is certainly not the complete list.  These eateries give not only in the Christmas season, but support many charities, year round.

Let us first preface this article by saying that many, many local restaurants support various causes and give willingly to numerous charities. We realize that some of these establishments may have been missed in this article, but that does not diminish their impact on the community.

Without further delay, Food Adventures presents a list of some of the biggest givers, in alphabetical order:

LOCALLY OWNED:

Dan Apolito and Mike Fullenkamp from Archer’s Tavern and Stone House Tavern have immersed themselves in Dayton charities

Here are the locally owned restaurants that go above and beyond when it comes to charitable generosity:

AMBER ROSE: From the Ronald McDonald charities, to local performing arts charities, Amber Rose has a firm involvement in the community.  They even have hosted events for Catholic women’s charities, Dayton Children’s Hospital and more.  You can see owner Joe Castellano and his workers at many charity and social events throughout the year.   They support the community quietly and never toot their own horn.  They have also catered for and supported charities like the Dayton International Peace Museum and the local Habitat for  Humanity. The list goes on and on..

ARCHERS TAVERN:  This popular Centerville restaurant also leads the food scene in community involvement.  Owners Dan Apolito and Mike Fullenkamp dive in and help many local causes, donating lots of gift cards and money.  Their philosophy is when you give, it comes back to you.  Small charities like Hannah’s Treasure Chest or local Alzheimer associations, no charity is too small or too big, and Archer’s helps a lot of them.  They even donate to local charities with their everyday menu “wing challenge.”  On May 9th, 2016, Archer’s plans on leading a charity event, Pro-Am, with celebrities such as Ickey Woods called Dayton Fairways for Airways Celebrity Golf Classic at NCR Country Club , benefiting the Jovante Woods Foundation.   Food Adventures will be involved as well… stay tuned…

Beavercreek Pizza Dive owner Teresa Geraci & Food Adventures’ Chef House, work the Monday buffet for charity

BEAVERCREEK PIZZA DIVE:  Each Monday evening, they host an all you can eat pizza buffet for charity.  They call it their “Serve Pizza, Do Good,” project.  We call it a delicious and filling way to support local causes.  Food Adventures has volunteered as guest pizza makers in the past to raise money for local charities like the “Miami Valley Pit Crew” and “Dayton Daybreak.”

BILL’S DONUTS: The best donuts in the world are made by some of the most caring people in the world.  Siblings Lisa and Jim Elam have carried on the family business and tradition of giving to the community.  They have sponsored dozens of kids baseball teams over the decades, and soccer teams too. They support the Blue Star Moms and Mackenzies Lemonade Stand, and so many more charities.  One of their biggest giving events is the annual Superhero 5k Donut Run for “A Special Wish Foundation.”  Food Adventures and Dayton Most Metro are planning on being a part of this event every year.

Lisa and Jim Elam pose with the kids before the Superhero Run for “A Special Wish Foundation”

BRIXX ICE CO.: Owner Chris Bhai is an unsung hero for Dayton charity involvement.  He is another proprietor who flies under the radar, supporting local causes at every turn.  Charities such as Dayton’s domestic violence resource called the Artemis Center, 5 for the kids, and the local Leukemia Lymphoma Society have benefited from their donations.  Whether hosting events, or helping cater, Brixx is a solid supported of the Miami Valley.  If we listed all the local non-profits that Brixx helps, we would be here all day.

Chris Bhai, owner of Brixx, is one of the most giving restaurateurs in the Miami Valley

CAKE, HOPE and LOVE: Mike and Shannon Teague, owners of this bakery, started with just one cake pan.  Now their reach is across the Miami Valley.  They have a“Wall of Hope” on their website, where each month, they help a new local charity.  Hospice of Dayton and The Hope Foundation of Greater Dayton are just 2 of the area charities they have helped recently.  They also make countless donations of free product to charities like www.nohungrykid.org.  Another example of good people doing good things for the Dayton community.

CASSANOS:  Cassano’s latest generation, Lora, Chip and Chris, have continued their father’s and grandfather’s legacy in recent years.  That legacy is a continued tradition of community involvement and charity work.  Their “Cassano’s Cares” Foundation” has recently given tens of thousands of dollars to the local Spinal Muscular Atrophy foundation or “SMA.”  The corporation has also given to and supported Grandview Hospital’s “Victor J. Cassano Health Center.”  Other medical donations recently have gone to the Kettering Medical Breast Evaluation Centers.  The Cassano family has also given away thousands of pizzas to charity each year.  It is great to see a Dayton icon so involved in future of the Gem City.

CHAPPY’S TAP HOUSE:  These guys continually hold events through the year as on site fundraisers for like selling old glassware for the Leukemia Lyphoma Society or doing a pint night to fight Prostate Cancer.   They are always seen supporting various charity events, and never stop giving to the local cause.  Good food, good beer and a company that gives back to the community.

DUBLIN PUB:  These guys always lend a hand when charity involvement is needed.  From donations to collecting Toys for Tots, they make a “yoemans effort.”  The support the Dayton United Rehabilitation Services charity, and have even held fundraisers for a competitor’s bar owner, who had cancer.  Holy Trinity Church and Dayton’s Alzheimers Association have been some of the charities that benefited from previous St Patty’s Day parties.   Thanks to restaurants like this, local charities get that shot in the arm they need to serve the Miami Valley.

FIFTH STREET BREWPUB:  Talk about year round commitment, these guys offer a guest bartending spot every Monday for charity.  They also donate a portion of that night’s food receipts to the cause of the week.  This is one of the coolest business philosophies and ensures that every week, Dayton area residents can help their favorite charity.  Did we mention the great venue, food and beer selection?  This brewery also has some of the friendliest staff in town.  Manager Dave Tickel and his crew are second to none.

FRESCO CATERING: Owner Jenn DiSanto is an amazing chef, a wonderful mom and a true inspiration.  She used her own personal triumphs as motivation to host events to help causes like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Dayton.  Jenn has organized some unforgettable charitable dinner events such as “Plating a Night of Hope.”  She also volunteers at various local schools to teach cooking classes for kids.  Chef Jenn is very active in the community and is always giving back. She regularly donates her time, talents and money to several local non-profit organizations, including breast cancer charities.  She has inspired many through her successful fight with the disease.   Being an animal lover, SICSA Pet Adoption Center is another charity close to her heart.  Jenn has been a chef all over the world, and we are lucky this gem eventually landed in the Gem city.

GHOSTLIGHT COFFEE: Not many people are as involved in the Dayton community as owner Shane Anderson.  He uses Ghostlight Coffee as a venue to showcase local artists and arts of all types.  From hosting songwriter events that benefit the local Dayton Food Bank, serving up coffee at Masquerage, or  providing a place for local charities to host their events, Ghostlight Coffee is a godsend to many who are fighting for a local cause.  From music to poetry and everything in between.  It seems as if we are seeing Ghostlight at about every charitable event, supporting causes in one way or another.

Chef Jenn DiSanto & The Big Ragu. Jenn has a great sense of humor, a giving heart, & makes some of the best food in the world

THE MEADOWLARK RESTAURANT:  Chef and owner Elizabeth Wiley is a pillar of the community.  Besides providing exceptional food at her restaurant, she is involved with countless local causes.  She supports them with her time and money.  For example, Chef Wiley judges the Springfield Food Truck Rally for charity. This benefits the Springfield Rotary Club’s charitable causes, including Services to People with Disabilities, Polio Plus and the International Project in Lesotho, Africa.  Meadowlark is also a big supporter of Dayton Pride and the Greater Dayton LGBT Center championing the cause for equality, locally.   Meadowlark’s chartible reach extends to other programs such as Dayton Public Radio’s Discover Classical, American Institute of Food & Wine,  DaytonNightOut.com and so many others.

ONE BISTRO: This place promotes taking care of your neighbor. Dayton’s only “pay what you can afford” or “pay it forward” based restaurant, it is charitable in it’s nature.  The staff is even made up with volunteers.  You can volunteer to earn meals for yourself.  Or you can volunteer as a donation of your time. Owners Robert and Kim Adamson business is driven by their faith in God and community involvement.  We can think of no better cause than feeding the area’s hungry children and adults.  One Bistro’s also donates to the area Red Cross’ Disaster Response Team.

Big Ragu with Ghostlight Coffee owner Shane Anderson. Shane generously donates his venue, time and resources to many local causes

SCRATCH CATERING:  For years, Chef Matt Hayden has made terrific BBQ and gourmet meals.  He has also donated to many area causes.  From Dayton History events, to the Fleur’s Et Vin event for AIDS Resource Center Ohio.  Scratch Food has left their imprint on the Dayton area, catering for many charity events.  One such cause is the “Suzy Pender Memorial Fund,”  which provides teddy bears to children at Miami Valley Hospital as a way to comfort them.   Scratch Catering has provided the food for the Pender golf outing fundraiser for the past 15 years.  Unprallelled generosity and dedication is what you find from the owners, here.

STONE HOUSE TAVERN:  They are involved in many aspects supporting the Waynesville community.  Stone House supports everything from kids athletic teams, to charitable gift card donations.  They are currently partnering with Archers Tavern for the May 9th “Fairways for Airways” golf outing Pro-Am featuring sports stars like Ickey Woods.  The event will benefit the Jovante Woods Foundation.   We believe in supporting business like this that give back to Dayton in so many ways.

THE SUBMARINE HOUSE:  Last year this restaurant donated over $15,000 to Children’s Hospital, at their “Super Duper Cheesesteak Challenge” event.   Restaurant owners Jason and Brody Tanner, oversaw the event and check presentation to the hospital.  This event is held annually and the crowds and donations have grown each year.  Great grub, and a great cause, you haven’t been to a charity event until you’ve watched a fellow Daytonian wolf down a 16 inch sub in 2 minutes.  But hey, “it’s for the kids.”

The talented Matt Hayden, owner of Scratch Catering is equally witty too. He is a pillar of the local charity community

WHEAT PENNY OVEN & BAR:  Chef Liz Valenti and Chef Elizabeth Wiley are known for their work and generosity at Meadowlark restaurant in the past.  As Chef Liz branched out to run Wheat Penny, they have continued the tradition of giving.  Upon their opening they hosted charity nights for The Artemis Center, SICSA Pet Adoption Center and The  Food Bank of Dayton, respectively.   Other charities supported in the past have been Yellow Springs Pride, GLSEN Dayton Chapter, and AIDS Resource Center Ohio, to name just a few.  Not only is Dayton lucky to have such talented chefs, but we are lucky to have such generous supporters of various Miami Valley causes.

YOUNG’S JERSEY DAIRY: Yellow Spring’s favorite farm is big on charity.  From a free Wool Gathering, to a Bike Tour for charity, that supports 4 charities, including United Rehabilitation Services of Dayton.   They always seem to have something going on.  Young’s even hosts a “Cheddar Challenge 5k” benefiting The Antioch University Midwest Scholarship Fund.  All this, while continuing to serve some of the area’s most delicious ice cream.

ZOMBIE DOGZ: Local couple Lee and David VanArtsendalen are always giving back to the community.  These owners of Zombie Dogz are always saying “yes” to favors, donations and appearances for good local causes.  Lots of these causes involve animals and dogs.  Like the “Furry Skurry 5k” for the Dayton Humane Society or the Dog Wash for the Battle Buddy Foundation which provides service dogs to veterans.  Just some or their other fundraising appearances have included Harrison Township Trustees’ National Night Out against Crime,    Kettering Funk Lab Dance Studio benefiting the dance team, AMVETS,  Alex’s Lemonade Stand, Stonespring Transitional Care Center police fundraiser, a 5k benefit for Miami Valley Hospital’s Children Intensive Care Unit, Harrison’s Heroes foundationds benefit for the NICU unit at Dayton Children’s Hospital.  They even make stops at local schools and churches.  It is great to see this popular food vendor, with the most inventive and delicious hot dogs, supporting so many local causes.

Zombie Dogz has used its success to support many local charities. Thank you David & Lee VanArtsendalen for your hard work.

THE CHAINS:

Here are some of the Dayton area chain restaurants, that give the most locally:

BONEFISH:  Quietly giving and supporting many charity events, we have noticed Bonefish’s involvement on the local level.  They are a sponsor for a local golf outing for Hannah’s Treasure Chest.   Other charities they support include Catholic Social Services, ARC Ohio’s Red Table Gala, and Life Essentials to name just a few.  They also donate countless gift cards to local requests, and are always open to lending a hand.

BRAVO! CUCINA ITALIANO:  Bravo will work with various local charities for “dine and donate” nights and give 10% of food revenue to the cause.  They host such events as “Breakfast with Santa.”   From this event, they culminate a winter clothing drive for local shelters and $1 from each buffet sale goes to charity.

BRIO TUSCAN GRILL: Brio hosts and donates food to many local events.  For example The Greene Daybreak event, to benefit Dayton Daybreak.  They also sponsor the “Derby Day Brunch” to benefit The Kettering Medical Center Foundation’s Women’s Wellness Fund.  These are just some of the events they cater and support each year.

Ted Tolliver owner of the Jersey Mike’s Dayton stores and Regional Manager Larry, have donated tens of thousands to Dayton charities.

CITY BBQ: A regional chain out of Columbus, people really love their BBQ.  We also love when the delicious food is catered to local charity events.  City BBQ is at many of these outings.  They also do a ton of internal donations to Veterans charities, Future Farmers of America (Ohio), Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Local cancer organziations, and Food Rescues.  They also offer 25% event donations to school and booster groups as well as charities.

FIREHOUSE SUBS:  These guys are known for their charity mission statement. Their Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation donates money for equipment for local firefighters.  In October 2015, they celebrated a donation of  $39,000 to the Kettering and Fairborn Fire Departments. Since the Foundation’s inception, they have donated $650,000 to Ohio Fire Stations.

JERSEY MIKE’S SUBS:  Ted Tolliver owns the local franchises and he gives back to the community with  passion.  He has supported United Rehabilitation Services of Dayton in the past.  In fact, upon each store opening he offered 10,000 free subs for a $1 donation to URS.  Also, each year, during the month of March, customers are invited to come in to their local Jersey Mike’s restaurant and make a donation to a local designated charity partner. The campaign culminates in Jersey Mike’s “Day of Giving, a nationwide event.  This day 100 percent of the day’s sales are donated to each local charity partner. Since 2011, Jersey Mike’s has raised more than $8.3 million for charities throughout the country.  Ted has continually supported the United Rehabilitation Services of Dayton  as his partner charity.

Submarine House donted over $15,000 to Dayton Children’s hospital last year.

LONGHORN STEAKHOUSE, MORAINE:  From pancake breakfast benefits, to event donations, Longhorn is carrying on the tradition of the late manager, Bob Medlin, by continuing to donate to dozens of causes each year.  If we listed all of the charities, it would run for pages.  Dayton Hospice Walk, Shoes for the Shoeless and Brief Blessings, Back2Back Ministries, Big Brothers Big Sisters program of the Greater Miami Valley, Miracle League of Dayton are just of few of the dozens of causes they support.

Mike and Shannon Teague run their cake shop, “Cake, Hope and Love,” as one of the most giving businesses in Dayton

Chef House, The Big Ragu and Hungry Jax are proud to give a shout out to these fine people of Dayton who are making a difference in everyday people’s lives.  Food Adventures would also like to say “Thank You” to these organizations, and a thank you to Dayton Most Metro for giving us a vehicle to present our weekly food scoop.  Make sure you support these eateries that support the community.

There you have it, our list of some of the most generous and charitable restaurants.

DID WE MISS ANYONE ??  IF SO, PLEASE COMMENT BELOW, TO MAKE US AWARE OF THE CHARITABLE ESTABLISHMENT.
