Texas Beef & Cattle Co. Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Today!

Texas-beef-staffTexas Beef & Cattle Co., the newest retail business and restaurant in the Wright Dunbar Village, has scheduled its grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for 4:45 p.m. Thursday, June 30, according to an announcement by Wright Dunbar Inc.

Located at 1101 West Third Street, close to the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park’s visitor center, the restaurant will be the first co-op style barbecue in Dayton, according to the announcement.

Texas Beef & Cattle will serve dinner on Thursday and Friday from 5 to 10 pm, Saturday from 4 to 10pm and brunch on Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Entrees will feature mesquite smoked beef brisket, pulled pork and smoked sausage. Specialty sides include borracho beans, Tejano rice, “yella’ tater salad,” side salads, sautéed vegetables and green beans.

Restaurant founder James Nunez plans to expand hours over time to include lunch and broaden the menu to include free range, grass fed, locally sourced bison brisket, free range chicken, ribs and Gulf Coast seafood, according to the announcement.

Nunez signed a three-year lease for the space with Wright Dunbar, the nonprofit organization responsible for developing the Wright Dunbar Village, the historic district in West Dayton that was home to airplane inventors Wilbur and Orville Wright and African American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. The restaurant will add nine jobs to the district, according to Wright Dunbar.

ATTENTION FOODIES !! One hundred thousand people will descend into downtown Centerville this Monday July 4th for the Americana Festival.

Sure there is a 5 k run early at 7:30am

You bet there is a parade at 10am.

And who could forget fireworks at 10pm later that night.

But Food Adventures has advanced notice on something close to our hearts…  FOOD VENDORS !! What restaurants are going to be in attendance?  What to eat?  We got it all for you right here.  We will make order of this crowded party of patriotism.  So sit in your lawn chair and listen to this scoop on the best eats at this festival

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— This is the 43rd Annual Americana Festival

— From 9:30am  – 5pm  is the Street Fair.  It runs from the instersection of 48 and 725, down to Bills Donut Shop, and will be filled with FOOD vendors.

— There are also food vendors at Benham’s Grove and tucked back into Activity Center Park in the kids play area.

— The key to this festival is to GET THERE EARLY… or go very late.  Food crowds are lightest at 10-11am and 4-5pm.

— Parking is rough, you may have to walk a few blocks, so suck it up buttercup

— We suggest bringing a light lawn chair with you, so you can go off to the side and sit and eat comfortably.

Dayton Music All-Stars Gather for Aria Marie Fundraiser

The Dayton music scene is a generous one, gathering often to give back to the community and loved ones through benefit shows. One that is particularly exciting is coming up at Oddbody’s Music Room. Nightbeast, Jasper the Colossal, Shotgun Surprise and Team Void are all performing together to benefit the Aria Marie Foundation on July 9th, 2016. 1i7ybcggc5nug60xqnsnl6j8f5dtmovd

The Aria Marie Foundation was founded in March 13, 2014 by Dale Spradling, lead singer of Shotgun Surprise shortly after Aria Marie, his daughter, lost her life tragically. She left behind a beautiful baby girl, Maleigha Nicole. Dale was inspired to start up the foundation to help children who have lost one or both parents by raising money to provide a small college fund for each child and providing Christmas presents to the children yearly.

Attending this show is a win-win for rock fans. Very reasonable, typical entry fee to see one some of Dayton’s best rock bands, plus help give back to a deserving charity! If you want to make a donation to the Aria Marie Foundation, click here.

A Child Asks: Why Get Stronger?

“Why do you work so hard when you don’t have to?”

A child asked me that question recently, curious about why my own strength training sessions are relatively intense compared to the general population.

“I like the feeling of being strong,” I said.

“But you’re already strong,” she said.

“And how did I get this way?” At this point I thought I had her. Surely the logic of a 40-year-old man would trump that of an 11-year old’s.

“But you keep doing more and more. You don’t need to do that, do you?” It was a fair point. She’s right. I have certain numbers in my head that I’m trying to hit, for no other reason than pride and maybe more than a little ego. This was a classic case of an adult being forced to boil something down to its essence because of the logic of a child–granted, a really smart child, but a child nonetheless.

So why do I keep pushing? I don’t need a 500-pound deadlift in order to age well, and my young interlocutor understood this intuitively. The truth is that I’m addicted to being strong, and I’m trying to get as strong as I possibly can while I’m still able because there will be a day when getting stronger isn’t possible. I’ll have to rely on my “muscle reserves,” so to speak, to thrive in my octogenarian years.

But it’s more than that. While there is a part of me who is trying to bank as much muscle as possible for when I get (even) older, if you strapped me to a lie detector test I’d tell you that I’m doing this for the right now. I’m doing this because:

I enjoy the way a strong body works.

I enjoy the way a strong body feels.

I enjoy the way other people respond to a strong body.

I enjoy the self-sufficiency that comes with a strong body.

The difference between you and me if you’re not working out isn’t just physical. You’d enjoy all of the things I listed too. It’s that I’ve always worked out, and thus I don’t have the same insecurities you do.

I leave my cards at the coffee shop I frequent. I hear from people all the time who tell me that they picked up my card there “six months ago” or “several weeks ago.” What took them so long to finally get in touch?

Fear. Insecurity. Previous bad experiences in fitness (usually involving judgment). They spend half a year building up the courage to seek out the help they need to get strong, to feel the way I do.

I’ve not solved this problem. I don’t know how to prove to people that I won’t judge them, make them feel less than, or belittle their skills in the gym. People who study human behavior and change might say that there’s nothing I can say because people have to be ready to change. I understand this intellectually, but I want to solve the puzzle. I want people to know that the gym can be a safe, empowering place.

I want everyone to know this. I want this understanding, this belief in the power of strength, to reside deep in everyone’s soul, from the 22-year-old with body image issues and a questionable relationship with food to the 60-year-old grandmother who’s never touched a dumbbell in her life.

My industry has tried to solve this problem by lying to people, selling them supplements they don’t need, and telling them that the answer to their fears is a singular piece of equipment or THIS exercise modality (and definitely not THAT one).

So when you add extant fear and insecurity, mix in a layer of smokescreen-induced distrust, then you get the recipe for you not walking into that local gym or yoga studio.

But remember this:

I enjoy the way a strong body works.

I enjoy the way a strong body feels.

I enjoy the way other people respond to a strong body.

I enjoy the self-sufficiency that comes with a strong body.

And you will too.

Saluting Dayton’s 2015-16 Theater Season

10443106_10152241549014755_6691478090546029427_oAmerica’s independence, murderesses at odds, family dysfunction upended by a gentleman caller, brave children thriving on creativity to survive the horrors of a concentration camp, and disheartened young adults navigating a post-9/11 world are some of the stories that bolstered Dayton’s 2015-16 theater season.

Looking back, let’s start with the bold, risk-taking Playground Theatre, a millennial-focused troupe changing the landscape of Dayton theater with an edgy off-Broadway vibe. Case in point: An exceptionally acted, up close and personal local premiere of Reasons to Be Pretty, Neil LaBute’s scathing account of image, regret, deception, and disillusionment directed with razor sharp tension and riveting intimacy by David Brush. Fine premieres thrived elsewhere at community theaters thanks to the Dayton Theatre Guild’s lovely Outside Mullingar and Last Gas as well as Young and Heart Players’ kooky, introspective Circle Mirror Transformation. As for musicals, Dayton Playhouse scored with challenging classics 1776 and Carousel while Beavercreek Community Theatre offered highly engaging accounts of The Addams Family and Spring Awakening

Collegiate theaters also hit the mark with a solid slate of musicals. Wright State University’s Chicago, The Music Man and Miss Mayor showcased the superior quality audiences have come to expect while Sinclair Community College notably produced an infectious, playful and soul-stirring Wiz. Drama standouts included University of Dayton’s captivatingly poignant staging of the Holocaust drama And A Child Shall Lead (co-produced by Zoot Theatre Company), Sinclair’s terrifically ensemble-driven One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Clark State Community College’s commendable Angels in America: Millennium Approaches.

On professional stages, the fantastic return engagement of The Lion King gave the Victoria Theatre Association late-season momentum, but the production was actually one of an assortment of outstanding national tours this season including A Night with Janis Joplin, Once, Pippin, The Book of Mormon, and The Bridges of Madison County. Human Race Theatre Company specifically excelled with a wonderfully haunting and heartfelt Glass Menagerie. Feminine-centric Magnolia Theatre Company produced a splendid local premiere of the engrossing one-woman show K of D, but also greatly entertained with the delightful cabaret Broadway Beveled. Dare to Defy Productions pulled out the stops with American Idiot, but also impressed with the hilarious Great American Trailer Park Musical and snazzy, dance-heavy Wild Party.
Assessing the 65 shows I saw this season, I congratulate the following winners (in bold) and nominees.

Welcome to Mack’s Tavern!

Scouting locations for Dive Bar Tuesday is usually pretty straight forward. We listen to the readers, make lists, and visit the sites as time allows. More often than not when we arrive, there is no doubt we are going to a dive bar. The location is small and usually hidden, there is not lots of light, and the people we see know each other. The first one we attended, Miami Valley Sports Bar, was the only venue we visited where we started to question if it had jumped to the next level. There was good food, plenty of room, and they were in the process of expanding and making the place better. Is there an upper ceiling to what can be considered a dive bar? Where does “dive bar” end and “nice place to go for a night out” begin? This conversation continued even as we walked into Mack’s Tavern, ready to get some drinks and have some of their delicious pizza.

12140638_907156022652763_7222387680784579725_nMack’s Tavern (381 Miamisburg Centerville Rd, Washington Township, OH 45459, (937) 813-7217) failed the first test of what we have come to expect from a dive bar: difficult to find. It is just sitting there next to Big Lots on Miamisburg Centerville Rd., begging for you to pull up and visit. The place is well lit too. Not too bright, because no one wants that in a bar, but just enough light to see the vintage décor on the walls and the games that are lined up and waiting for you to play. There are still some nooks and crannies you can scurry off to for a private discussion or a first date, but the floor is set up, so it is easy to meet people. That is not by accident. MacKenzie Manley, the owner of Mack’s, wants people to come in as strangers and leave as friends. If that is something I have written before, there is a reason. It is one of the charms of the dive bar. Or, if you want to be politer with the naming, the neighborhood bar. It is working. Everyone was chatting and having fun. And MacKenzie knew every regular.

If you have not heard of MacKenzie, it is possible you have not been near a computer for a very long time. MacKenzie won the first annual Bloody Mary Showdown with a Barbecue Burger Bloody Mary. Media monolith BuzzFeed picked up a story about the tavern leaving coupons on cars left overnight for responsible drivers. She was a bartender at the Pour Haus for years and was voted one of the top dive bars in the city in her first year of operation. She understands both sides of the bar business: making great drinks and providing a comfortable environment for the patrons who show up. She was inspired by the venerable Cubby Hole and the Pour Haus from years gone by. Does your company need a place to have a lunch meeting? Call Mack’s. Do you want to throw that big party for the holidays, or maybe a small class get-together? Call Mack’s. Did your plans at a different bar in the city fall through? Call Mack’s. Talking with her, exploring the space, you start to wonder if you can call this a dive bar, or are we in a whole different place? This is a dive bar. MacKenzie was emphatic about it.

Their menu is filled with food and drink delicious options. Just recently she added ten more specialty pizzas and wings to go with the sandwiches and meal-sized plates of Mack and Cheese. There are many beers on tap and bottles she offers, and all of them at a reasonable price. Good luck finding any beer over $4 (but they do pop up from time to time). They offer cocktails as well, which they are happy to create to your taste. They do have some standards that they will pour for you, but for the most part that menu is a bespoke one. And after a meal and some drinks here, your wallet will not feel that much lighter. The philosophy that drives the atmosphere at Mack’s is that she wants you to have a good time without breaking the bank. The inexpensive menu and the really friendly workers there ensure that the experience will be a pleasant one. They have thought it out right down to the restrooms, which may be the cleanest, most attractive ones I have seen  in a while.

From their mascots Chewy the Boar and MacKenzie’s pit bull Haze to the one-of-a-kind signs on the wall, you are going to have a unique experience. They offer pool and darts for entertainment on a daily basis with Monday being reserved for karaoke and Thursday being a trivia night. And come football season, have no doubt, this bar cheers for the Steelers. It is a dive bar by design, and the lead architect has done an excellent job. Head into the easy to find, spacious bar and spend the night enjoying the food, the beverages, and the fact you are likely to leave with more friends than you had heading in. And leave your car if you had a little too much to drink. They will take care of that, too.

Zombie Dogz Finally Admits To Brown Street Location!!!!

ZOmbiedogzHello everybody, there are a few things that we would like to tell you all. We’re expecting our second child soon and with that being said we will not be operating the truck very much after the month of July. We will still be doing a couple events and bigger festivals that we’ve done yearly. After this season we will be shutting the truck down except for festivals and a few other events.

It’s also come to our attention that there’s rumors going around of us opening up a brick and mortar restaurant. And we have been telling everyone that it’s not true. Well it is in fact true. We will be opening up our first actual restaurant hopefully in September. We’ve been trying to keep it a secret and we just can’t keep it from you all anymore. The restaurant will be located at the corner of Brown and Stewart in the UD area. It’s the old Shish Wraps location. So there might be a gap from us being in the truck and us opening the restaurant. We need time to hire a few more people, train, and open the store up. We look forward to starting a new chapter, we just want to say thank you all for believing in us and always being there with the constant love and support.

We will be hiring more employees when the time gets closer. So if you have experience and would like to join the team please let us know. We will start accepting applications when we’re closer to opening.

Designed by prominent 1960’s Dayton architect Paul Deneau, the Grant-Deneau Tower is a fine example of mid-century modern architecture and was recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places, a rare feat for a building less than fifty years of age. There is hope by the building’s ownership and the City of Dayton that redevelopment for mixed use (commercial and residential) will start in Spring of 2017. 2nd Street Market Partners with Homefull For Fresh Local Food Options

SNAPNearly 30 vendors at the 2nd Street Market, 600 E. Second St. in downtown Dayton, now accept SNAP/food assistance Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) tokens thanks to a partnership with Homefull, a nonprofit organization working to end homelessness. Participating vendors offer fresh food items, such as produce, dairy products, meat, specialty foods and bread.

 
This new partnership addresses a significant community need: According to Homefull and area news outlets, 23 percent of households in the Dayton area struggle with food hardship — the fourth highest rate in the United States. When compared to the rest of Ohio, Montgomery County has a higher proportion of residents who receive public benefits yet a lower number of SNAP/EBT and WIC-authorized vendors.
“The 2nd Street Market helps Five Rivers MetroParks serve as the region’s conservation leader by providing our community convenient access to local food, which is less taxing on the environment and often healthier,” said Market Manager Jimmy Harless. “This partnership with Homefull helps the Market provide new customers with more options for stocking their kitchens with locally grown and produced food.”

 
The partnership is funded by a two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture aimed at increasing SNAP/EBT redemption at farmers markets in Montgomery, Greene and Preble counties.

Also new at the 2nd Street Market on Saturdays, Homefull Solutions will sell fresh produce grown by clients at its microfarm, located on the grounds of the men’s Gateway shelter on Gettysburg Avenue. Homefull Solutions also operates a community supported agriculture (CSA) program and The Market at Wright Stop Plaza.

 
“We’re excited to make it more convenient for our clients and the community to purchase fresh, healthy, local produce,” said Tina Patterson, Homefull’s chief executive officer. “This partnership also provides our clients with access to paying jobs, teaches them productive skills through meaningful activity and improves self-esteem.”
The 2nd Street Market is open Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 40 vendors offer such kitchen staples as bread, milk, cheese, meats, oils, flour and more. The Market was named Best Farmers Market on the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Best of Ohio Readers’ Ballot from Ohio Magazine. Archer’s Celebrates 6th Birthday! All Week!

The uber popular eatery, Archer’s Tavern will celebrate it’s 6th birthday starting tomorrow with a week long celebration of activities.

The restaurant located at 9496 Dayton Lebanon Pike,  is also known by the intersection of 48 and Sheehan Rd., across from the Mega Kroger in Centerville.

Food Adventures has loved this place since this place since the get go.. Why?  It is a simple formula, good food, good service , good prices.  They also have a great draft beer list.  Whether you are a regular customer, or havent tried the place, this upcoming week is a great time to catch some fun events at Archer’s Tavern.  

 

HERE IS THE SKINNY ON THE 6th BIRTHDAY WEEK PARTIES:

SATURDAY JUNE 25th– Their famous CRAWFISH BOIL for $7  plate.  It goes from noon – till its gone.  This is a MUST EAT !!   Can you eat more plates that than the Big Ragu who will be stopping by?  Also, featuring Louisiana Brewery, ABITA beers that pair perfectly with the “mud bugs.”

SUNDAY JUNE 26th– They will feature a BLOODY MARY BAR, CORNHOLE, LADDER BALL, and GIANT JENGA. All day Sunday.

 

MONDAY JUNE 27th– It is a BEACH PARTY on the patio. Hawaiian shirts are a must !

 

From MONDAY JUNE 27th thru FRIDAY JULY 1st – you get half-priced bar drinks from 11am-9pm (beer, liquor, wine).

TUESDAY JUNE 28th– Archer’s Tavern’s official birthday! There will be BIRTHDAY  CAKES and it is PATIO POUNDER DAY where you can MAKE YOUR OWN SANGARIA CONCOCTION.

All kids wearing a sports jersey get a FREE COOKIE !!  Also, BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS, 9am – pancake breakfast – FREE !  All young athletes and parents are welcome to the motivational seminar from former Buckeyes Tim Williams and Donnie Avege.  Also former Philadelphia Eagle, Andy Harmon will be in attendance.

Your Uniquely Shaped Cheeto Could Make You The Big Cheese

cheetosDo you stare at clouds and see clowns  or superheros in the lines of the marble on the floor?    Are you one of those highly imaginative people who’s seen Mr. T or the Pope in your toast?  Well, Frito-Lay’s latest consumer-engagement contest might of interest to you!

This summer, the online Cheetos Museum is taking online submissions from people who believe they have spotted a unique Cheetos shapes, ones resembling famous landmarks or people, or animals or objects.

Through Aug. 15, U.S. fans 13 and older can submit a photo of their special Cheetos shapes, along with a title and description of the snack piece, at CheetosMuseum.com.

Entries will be judged weekly based on visual interest, “buzzworthiness” and creativity. Each week for 10 weeks, one winner will be awarded a $10,000 prize and have his/her work featured on the “museum” site and in a real-life exhibit later this summer. Consumers will then vote from among the four weekly winners with the highest scores to determine a grand prize-winner, who will receive an additional $50,000, as well as glory on the site.

Other promotional videos — also featured on the contest site — show kids and adults proudly displaying Cheetos shaped like Abraham Lincoln, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Statue of Liberty, among other familiar images.

And don’t even think about using Photoshop to create your Cheeto shape. The official rules warn that if the sponsor determines that a photo was manipulated, the entrant/finalist will be disqualified, even if already announced as a winner.

Cheetos is also running an instant-win game in which paperboard replicas of Cheetos shaped like landmarks, animals, people or things have been seeded among specially marked packages; and a sweeps that is entered by sharing a Cheetos snack image on your Facebook or Twitter account and filling out a registration form.
