Soft Rock Cafe: Sing, Eat, Drink !

August 4, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Soft Rock Pizza – a MUST EAT !

Do you find yourself singing along with tunes in your car? Do you belt out tunes in the shower? Ever wonder what it would feel like to be on American Idol? Well for about a decade there has been a place that is the closest you can come to making that a reality.

Soft Rock Cafe, located at 877 E. Franklin Street in Centerville has been Dayton’s best karaoke bar for a decade, but it is still relatively unknown in some circles.  The Food Adventures Crew highly recommends this place.  WHY? If you love a good time, party

Owners Mark and Nicole on “80’s Metal Night”

atmosphere with hilarious and gracious hosts, this is the place for you.  Soft Rock Cafe.. aka “The Rock” is a great place to host birthday parties, bachelorette parties and any celebration you can think of…  It is common to see a party bus pull up and unload some fun seekers who are “ready to sing and dance.”  It is a great place for a Food Adventure and a fun adventure…  You can relax too, because the clientele is always friendly,  and so is the staff.

The atmosphere is incredible.  Lights, fog machine and literally hundreds of thousands of karaoke songs to choose from.  Some singers are fantastic, others, are just having fun, and

Baked Wings – surprisingly good and crispy

some… well maybe the alcohol is singing.  In front of the stage, is a dance floor and when crowds aren’t getting down to the singers, they are doing the “Cupid Shuffle” during the 15 minute intermission.  One thing is for sure, there is nothing else like this experience in the Dayton area.

They have a small, but tasty kitchen menu where the pizza is the star.  Soft Rock also has a full bar with bottled beer choices and an extensive liquor offering.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:
— Soft Rock hosts karaoke on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from around 10pm – 2am (except for Sundays).  If you have never been there, and you like karaoke, this place is  MUST SEE !  It is in a league of its own.

Best Karaoke Atmosphere in Dayton

— Locally owned and operated my Mark Hall and Nicole Gordon, Soft Rock is more than just karaoke.   They host many charity events throughout the year.  From scholarship fundraisers, to cancer research, they enjoy giving back to the community.    Three such events to keep your eyes out for are the

SKYLAR KOOKEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP EVENT: Typically held in the spring, they hold a rock concert and raffle (April) in memory of an exceptional girl who was a Bellbrook High School student.

Packed Dance floor

BREAST CANCER FUNDRAISER: Usually held in October, Vicky Becker organizes this fundraiser which benefits the Susan Komen foundation and breast cancer research.  They event usually has a local band and silent auction/raffle items.

ROGER GORDON MEMORIAL GOLF OUTING: Most recently held at community golf Course in Kettering, the after party / steak dinner and raffle is held at Soft Rock.  The event is in memory of Roger Gordon, whose strength in battling Multiple Sclerosis was an inspiration.  All proceeds go to research charities to cure MS.

— The two karaoke hosts are the best of the best.  Time to meet 2 unforgettable characters.

Karaoke DJ – Curt Delk

** MARK HALL: Thursday and Sunday you can find Mark as the master of ceremonies.  With his sarcastic comments, dry humor and infectious laugh, he is a most generous host.  Always friendly, Mark makes you feel like one of the family.

** CURT DELK:  Your Friday and Saturday nights will never be the same after you experience a karaoke show with Curt.  Props, one liners and  memorable quotes, fill Curt’s show.  Humor is not all you will find as he is a helpful host with backup vocals and he can assist you with song choices.

Both hosts have their fair share entertainment value.. as well as shots, drinks and “bombs.”

and guess what ..? ADMISSION IS FREE !  Yes, all that entertainment is FREE !  So eat up and drink up!

— Soft Rock also features live bands a few times a year, like this Saturday, August 6th – SPUNGEWURTHY returns to the stage !

— You don’t want to miss their two of the biggest parties of the year: The Soft Rock Halloween Party and the Soft Rock New Years Eve Bash.  These events are guaranteed good times.

Deluxe Pizza

— Soft Rock features TV screens around the entire bar and seating area.  They hold special events for sports such as Ohio State games, and NFL Games, but make no mistake, this is a karaoke bar.

Ok so you’re at Soft Rock singing and dancing – well you’re hungry and thirsty.. what do you do ?

ANSWER: follow Food Adventures lead with our patented, often imitated, never duplicated MUST EATS:

MUST EATS:

— DELUXE PIZZA: Pepperoni, mushroom, sausage, onion and green peppers, topped with a mound of cheese.  Hot out of the oven and ready to burn our

Birthday Party Destination

ass so be careful !  This pizza is sooooo good, is easily shared, and a perfect treat while watching karaoke with some drinks.

— NICOLE’S KNOCK OUT PUNCH:  Super secret recipe that is reminiscent of the Cruise Line “drinks of the day.”  We don’t know what Nicole has in it, but it is DELICIOUS and may get ya buzzed.

— WINGS:  Baked twice, this wings are best when you ask for them with hot sauce on the side.  They come out crispy and flavorful and the buffalo sauce is the perfect slow heat.

Little Beers are great !

— PEPPERONI PIZZA:  It is hard to pick just one pizza, so we have the pepperoni… it is good, simple and be warned, they sprinkle a little salt on the bottom of the crust.  so if you don’t like that, ask for it without salt.

— LITTLE BEERS: Licor 43 and a topping of cream.  wow, just wow…

— SCOOBY SNACKS: An incredible “shot” made with milk, pineapple juice and a secret mix of liquor

— BUCKETS OF BEER: Great price breaks when  you buy 5 bottles on ice in a bucket. Prices vary based on kind of beer and if domestic, local or international beers.

Birthday shots !

Lots of great memories are made at Soft Rock…. make some of your own, and head on up with a group of friends this weekend.  Remember to SING, EAT, and DRINK!

How to Participate in #IPAday

August 4, 2016 By Guest Contributor

IPADAYWidgetOn the first Thursday of August join beer enthusiasts, breweries and bars across the globe and celebrate IPA Day, a collective toast to one of craft beer’s most iconic styles: the India pale ale.

Founded in 2011, IPA Day is a global celebration of craft beer. It is a universal movement that was created to unite the voices of craft beer enthusiasts, bloggers and brewers worldwide. IPA Day was originally developed as a social media-based holiday, but has since expanded into a worldwide party, boasting hundreds of IPA-themed events and celebrations all over the globe.

IPA Day is not the brainchild of a corporate marketing machine, nor is it meant to serve any particular beer brand. IPA Day is an opportunity for all breweries, bloggers, businesses and beer lovers to connect and share their love of craft beer. It is an opportunity for the entire craft beer culture to combine forces and advocate craft beer through increased education and global awareness.

Why Celebrate the IPA?

This illustrious style represents the pinnacle of brewing innovation with its broad spectrum of diverse brands, subcategories and regional flavor variations, making it the perfect style to galvanize craft beer’s social voice.

At the 2015 Great American Beer Festival, the most-entered style category was the American-Style India Pale Ale with 336 entries; the Imperial India Pale Ale had the second highest amount of entries at 208. Its popularity and accessibility makes the IPA the most inclusive style for brewers, retailers and consumers to collectively celebrate.

The goal is to make this year’s IPA Day even more viral. Getting involved is easy! The only requirements are an appreciation for great craft beer and the willingness to spread the word. Anyone can participate by enjoying an IPA with friends, making some noise online with the #IPAday hashtag and showing the world that craft beer is more than a trend.

IPA Day

How to Participate in IPA Day

Organize an IPA Day event at your brewery, brewpub, restaurant, bar, bottle shop, home or office.

On August 4, share your photos, videos, blog posts, tasting notes, recipes and thoughts on IPA with the world. Be sure to tag your posts on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+ and other social media platforms with the #IPAday hashtag. Please note that this year we are using a lower case “d” in the hashtag to reduce confusion.

See what other people are saying on Twitter by searching #IPAday. Follow the conversation closely by adding an #IPAday search column on your Tweetdeck.

Become a craft beer steward in your community. Encourage non-craft beer drinkers to take a break from their normal beverage routine and join the collective toast on IPA Day. Set the goal of converting at least one person, if not the whole world of drinkers to IPA lovers.

Embrace Incrementalism

August 3, 2016 By Jason Harrison

There are two things I do as a personal trainer that you can implement immediately in your own workout regimen. I take detailed notes, and I increase weight incrementally. The first will just cost you the price of a notebook (Moleskine baby!), and the second might prompt you do join a different gym or to make purchases to round out your home gym.

photo-1434847868581-86e8a2b8e7a3

The Power of Notes

I’ve not always been a good trainer. For many years I would say I was very bad. But I managed to get results for clients despite this because I’ve always taken good notes. That means I know exactly how many sets and reps you performed last week, I know what you’re struggling to grasp, and I know if it’s time to increase the weight for a particular movement. That’s all in the notes.

photo-1439777723962-200c3f5b294e

If you’re working out on your own now and you don’t have any injuries but you’ve been struggling to make progress, start taking notes. When you struggle with an exercise, write that down. What happened? Where did you go wrong? Take a video of yourself squatting. How was your form? Did you lean forward? Did your heels pop off the floor or did your left foot pronate? Taking notes of anomalies can help you address them during the next workout.

The Power of Incremental Progress

This note-taking is directly linked to another factor that can dramatically affect how much you’re getting out of the gym: increasing the load that you’re moving during your workouts.

Let’s say you’re still in the beginner’s stage of strength training and you’re using a basic 3 sets of 10 repetitions for your exercises. If you were doing a goblet squat for 3 sets of 10 repetitions using a 35-pound kettlebell last month, then you should be using a heavier one this month. Understand that this scenario presupposes that you’re still fairly early in your strength training life, so that a basic linear progression (add more weight next week than you’re using this week) still yields results. If you’re an intermediate or advanced lifter then you won’t be able to add weight to the bar forever. In the beginning, however, it’s not a bad idea to keep things simple. Just keep adding weight when you hit your goal of 3 sets of 10 repetitions.

photo-1458312732998-763933ed4896

If you’re working out in your home gym, a really underrated investment is small “change plates,” which are the barbell weights that come in sizes like 2.5 pounds, 5 pounds, or 7.5 pounds. You also can get them in smaller increments, like 1.25 pounds or .5 pound. It seems silly, but these tiny increments can help you increase your work capacity slowly over time. Then when you’re ready to convert to more sophisticated percentage-based programming, you’ll be all set when the day calls for a back squat at 77.5 percent of your one-rep max: you’ll have the change plates to get you as close to the actual number you’re lifting as possible. Not all gyms have change plates in small increments, but it might be worth looking for one that does.

You don’t need a lot of different exercises in the beginning of your fitness journey. And once again, the idea of “muscle confusion” is a fiction peddled by people trying to sell yo things you don’t need. You don’t want confused muscles; you want strong, smart muscles that know what the hell they’re doing. You’re not going to build those by hopping around to different exercises every week. And you can’t develop smart muscles without holding them accountable for what they’re doing: that means a combination of notes and incremental weight increases.

Proud Daytonian Now A Kentucky Colonel

August 3, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

Joseph Head being presented his KY Colonel certificate by Michael Veach. Two legends in the bourbon world.

Many of us know Joe Head as the driving force behind the changing of The Century Bar to a bourbon bar.  In 2012 the decor of the bar was changed, to reflect its new direction and the focus of this venue, evolved to celebrate America’s Official Native Spirit.

In 2013 the Bourbon Review named The Century one of  America’s Best Bourbon Bars,”  a title they’ve continued to be a party of. Here’s what they said:

Century Bar, Dayton, OH: In what could be the most underrated Bourbon bar in the country, the Century Bar takes you back to 1862 with its 150-year-old back bar. The home of the former Kette & Sons Rye Whiskey Distillery, Century Bar packs 87 Bourbons and regularly holds blind tastings. It’s the sort of place every Bourbon drinker should visit at least once in his or her life.

In 2015 Men’s Journal declared The Century Bar one of the 10 Best Bourbon Bars in America. Travelandleisure.com put The Century on their list of 15  best bourbon bars in America. Joe has established himself as a bourbon ambassador and now spends more time doing talks and tastings than he does behind the bar. But he’s also made sure to keep the standards high for his staff of bartenders that mimic his passion for the bronze liquid and continue to create new bourbon fans daily.

And last night General Manager Joe Head was inducted into the Kentucky Colonels, for his dedication to promoting the bourbon heritage, and thus Kentucky.

Kentucky-Colonels-shield-only-logo-2C-e1445529700812-2The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels is an organization of talented and capable men and women appointed by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky because of their service to the state. They act as the Governor’s ambassadors of Kentucky’s heritage and rich history of arts and entertainment.

Here’s Colonel Joe’s reaction from last night, as posted to his Facebook page:

“Wow what an amazing evening so many people to thank, first and for13882228_642702562547982_8434116824604831488_n-1emost my beautiful wife Edye Head without her non of this would be possible , my dear friend Michael Veach for nominating me to be a Kentucky colonel. The Werk Out is Dayton Band’s Biggest Event Ever

August 2, 2016 By LIbby Ballengee

Phase2 Werk Out 2016It’s incredibly exciting when one of our own home grown Dayton bands makes it big. Many Daytonians are not aware of the incredible national following The Werks have created. After ten years of touring, most recently from an adventurous Alaskan tour, they are back to their native Ohio to throw their biggest party yet, the 7th annual Werk Out Music and Arts Festival.

The festival started closer to Dayton, but as it has skyrocketed in popularity, it found it’s home at the Grateful Dead’s old stomping grounds, Legend Valley Concert Venue in Thornville, Ohio (formerly known as Buckeye Lake Music Center). This year’s festival is the biggest and boldest yet. Music fans were thrilled to see the amazing line-up of both national and regional acts, which include some of the top names in the jam and electronica scene, including STS9, Lettuce, and Greensky Bluegrass.

This year’s festival includes special collaboration sets that are certain to be unforgettable:a daytime memorial set dedicated to the memory of beloved former Werks member Norman Dimitrouleas; Twerkapod, which is a late night 90’s music tribute set with members of Twiddle, The Werks, and Dopapod; Daft Funk, a tribute to Daft Punk by Earphunk; and an appearance by Everyone Orchestra with special guest Todd Stoops.

This is one of the premiere music festivals in Ohio, and Dayton Ohio couldn’t be prouder of our home town boys making it big! Congratulations to the Werks family, and for fans, don’t miss this highly anticipated summer festival!

How to Go?

General admission festival passes are available now for $139.99, Additional ticketing options are also available. The Werk Out Festival tickets are available now at http://www.thewerkoutfestival.com/site/get-tickets.
