Extra! Archer’s Opens New Location Monday!

October 9, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Archer’s on Dorothy Lane Opens Monday October 10th !

Familiar food and faces, in new places, is what you can expect this Monday. Popular Centerville restaurant “Archer’s Tavern” expands to a second location tomorrow, and the buzz has been very positive from training day.

A new atmosphere, larger than the original restaurant, and an enclosed patio area are some of the featurea.  But don’t worry, you can still eat your favorites as they have kept the EXACT same menu !

Food Adventures was able to grab a table on training night, and we are pleased to announced that the food was terrific and the service was great.  They have a tried and true system which allows for quick, attentive service,  Their friendly employees are top notch.

A New Staff Awaits You

HERE’S THE SKINNY on ARCHER’S TAVERN, KETTERING:

— The restaurant is located at 2030 E. Dorothy Lane in the old Tumbleweed restaurant location.

— Grand Opening October 10th, 2016 at 11am.

— Hours will be :
     Sunday 11am – 10pm
     Monday – Thursday 11am – 11pm
     Friday and Saturday  11am-1am

Blackened Tilapia over Rice

— The restaurant will rotate 24 draft beer taps, with an eclectic selection of local, familiar and rare beers.

— Huge, 200 people seating area, with full bar area and enclosed patio seating

— Archer’s will continue to feature Buckeye Vodka in many of its cocktails and special events.

— Owners Mike Fullenkamp and Dan Apolito started planning for this location a year ago, after deciding to nix a deal on a Cornerstone Development location near Wilmington Pike and Feedwire Rd.

One of the Dining Rooms

As for the food, we have our patented “MUST EATS”  to tell you about.  Use our dozens of visits here to ensure you try the best of the best.  Drumroll please… start drooling as we present our …

MUST EATS at ARCHER’S TAVERN- KETTERING/DOROTHY LANE:

— AWARD WINNING CHILI:  Every year they hold a chili cook off, and the winner not only wins cash, but their chili goes on the menu for a year.  The result is the most flavorful chili around.  It is ridiculously good.

Fudge Brownie Sundae – yeah, that good

— ARCHER’S ALE: This is the Big Ragu’s “go to” brew at Archers.  It is an ESB (Extra Special Bitter), but don’t let the name ESB scare you, it is a light refreshing beer.  It is brewed in Cincinnati by Rivertown Brewery, ESPECIALLY for Archer’s Tavern.  Try this winner in a pint glass.

— GRILLED, BLACKENED TILAPIA OVER RICE: This will knock your socks off if you love fish.  A nice, clean , fresh filet.  The blackened seasoning gives it a perfect balance.  We suggest a side salad and rice for your sides to complete a perfect pairing.

— WINGS “SWEET AND SEXY STYLE”:  This is why you read Food Adventures, because we know

Enclosed Patio seating

things no one else does.  These wings are NOT on the menu, but available by special request.  These are wings with Dry Rub spice, drizzled with Spicy Garlic sauce, then tossed in Sweet BBQ sauce.  The result is tangy and slightly hot taste of joy. Probably the best wing sauce we have ever tasted.

— THE PHILLY CHEESESTEAK: A massive, heaping sandwich filled with meat, peppers and melted provolone cheese.  You can also request cheese whiz on this monster.  We say, go for it.  This is how they do it in Philadelphia.  Your choice of shaved ribeye steak or sliced chicken breast for the meat.  Tip: ask for extra mayo.

The Bar Area

— TACO PIZZA: Good, flavorful and spicy!  The ground beef matches well with the cheese and jalapenos.  The fresh dough is a hallmark and we absolutely love it.

— STICKY BURGER:  Where else in town can you get a burger with Peanut Butter on it ?  The result is an incredible taste that mimics a peanut Thai taste.  In the 5 year hisory of Archer’s only 2 people have returned the burger because they did not like it.  TRY IT !

— FUDGE BROWNIE SUNDAE:  Oh mama…. the brownie is served hot, covered in hot fudge.  A scoop of vanilla ice cream tops that, and caramel is drizzled over the whole thing.  Turn on the lights and call the law, we dont care if we ever get well…

Salad With French Dressing

What great stuff.  A local eatery with spot on food, service and prices, just like the original.  This location should be a home run too.

Food Adventures would like to send congratulations to the owners and staff on their new locale.  It is a pleasant place, and is perfect for family and friends.  It will also be a great stop for those softballers, and other sports teams at Delco Park for after game dinners and drinks.

Food Adventures  is proud to be featured in weekly articles on DaytonMostMetro .com

Check out our upcoming appearances at our Food Adventures website, DaytonFoodies.com  – since 2008, bringing you food scoop in the Miami Valley.

McCoy on Movies: The Girl On The Train

October 7, 2016 By Tabari McCoy

“Man, I should have just taken an Uber to work … But then again, ‘The girl in the Uber’ just doesn’t have the same ring to it!” Rachel (Emily Blunt) peers out as she passes the home of the seemingly perfect couple … Only to discover something completely unexpected in a scene from director Tate Taylor’s take on the best-selling novel THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN. Credit: DreamWorks Pictures © 2016 Storyteller Distribution Co.

WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Edgar Ramirez, Lisa Kudrow and Laura Prepon

WRITER(S): Erin Cressida Wilson (screenplay); Paula Hawkins (based on the novel by)DIRECTOR(S): Tate Taylor

WEB SITE: http://www.thegirlonthetrainmovie.com/HERE’S THE STORY: Based on the book of the same name, The Girl on the Train stars Emily Blunt as Rachel, a divorcee who still not over her ex Tom (Justin Theroux), who has since moved on to marry and have a child with Anna (Rebecca Ferguson). A recovering alcoholic, Rachel has been staying with her friend Cathy (Laura Prepon) for the past 2 years trying to get back on her feet, which mostly consists of her riding the train from the suburbs into Manhattan Monday–Friday.

The most exciting part of Rachel’s existence, though, is the part of her train ride that passes by a seemingly perfect couple of Scott Hipwell (Luke Evans) and his wife Megan (Haley Bennett). Seeing Megan embrace Scott on weekly if not daily basis, Rachel is fascinated by the woman she sees as still having the life she lost in her divorce, a part of herself she can’t imagine ever getting back. Then, one day, she sees Megan kissing a different man who turns out to be Dr. Kamal Abdic (Edgar Ramirez), who also just so happens to be Megan’s therapist. Becoming more and more obsessed with Megan while trying to deal with losing her old relationship, Rachel finds herself in a precarious position once she sees Megan walking one day into a tunnel, determined to confront her about her apparent affair.

But what Rachel doesn’t know is while she thinks the woman she has been obsessing over has such a perfect existence, the truth of Megan’s life is revealed one moment at a time … All of which comes to a head the moment Rachel decides to follow her into the tunnel …

WHO WILL LIKE THIS FILM THE MOST? Fans of thrillers; Emily Blunt fans; those who enjoy watching films that delve into the lives of damaged characters and watching how to they try to piece together their existence; people who like stories with twists

WHO WON’T (OR SHOULDN’T) LIKE THIS MOVIE? Recovering alcoholics; women in abusive relationships; depressed people who obsesses over strangers; people who hate films that have slow pacing; anyone who can’t buy into the film’s story

SO, IS IT GOOD, BAD OR ABSOLUTELY AWFUL? A film that could be best described in some way as a spiritual cousin to Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train is a thriller that delivers emotionally-strong performances to satisfy those looking for twisty “what’s going on here” tale … Even if there are times the film’s slow pace and twisty tale.

Blunt captures the essence of Rachel with skilled acumen, a necessity in a film of this type with so many slow reveals. Weaving between the present and the past, The Girl on the Train requires an actresses able to not only showcase the best and worst of times in Rachel’s life but also how she is unable to cope with her own life when she knows she’s being self-destructive. Blunt truly shows her skill as an actress in revealing and showing all of these various aspects of Rachel to bring out sympathy and empathy to her character as she tries to make sense of the world around her.

Likewise, Bennett does an extraordinary job at stripping away the supposed perfect image that Blunt’s character constructs, bringing the “the grass is NOT always greener” cliché out to full blossom. While possessing all the physical attributes Rachel rambles about and wishes she still possessed, Bennett brings out a sadness in her character that shows how much in common the two women have. Of course, this helps act as fine balancing line between the two to keep the film’s emotional undercurrent steady. While Ferguson’s performance accomplishes what needs to be done to move the story forward, it isn’t exactly as memorable as Blunt or Bennett’s, which provide an emotionally necessary juxtaposition. The guys in the film fit in like jigsaw pieces to fill in the bigger picture, but they fit into the story well enough to hit all the necessary beats.

The only problem is sometimes the beats take a bit too long to get to under director Tate Taylor (The Help, Winter’s Bone) as there are some scenes that feel a bit jumbled in terms of the timeline and fitting into the big reveal of the text. Other than that, the film hits more often than it misses and delivers tension, emotion and intrigue. If nothing else, The Girl on the Train will make you think twice about your daily commute, the people you see and the lives you believe they may or may not live.

It will also make a lot of dudes think twice about not protecting their passwords.

’35MM’ Review – Dare to Defy Productions – The Story Within

October 7, 2016 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Composer Ryan Scott Oliver’s 2012 multimedia song cycle “35MM: A Musical Exhibition” receives an admirable treatment from Dare to Defy Productions through Oct. 8 in the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Center.

(left to right) Zach King, Natalie Sanders, Alan Ruddy, Danielle Kubasky, and Skyler McNeely rehearse Dare to Defy Productions’ presentation of “35MM: A Musical Exhibition,” a song cycle bridging the worlds of music and photography.

Unique in concept but lacking cohesive depth, “35MM” uses a series of eclectic photographs by Matthew Murphy to tell intriguing, hilarious and occasionally confusing tales of romance, connection, disillusionment, and hope. Overall, this vignette-driven showcase is at its best when love dominates the conversation. For instance, a song centered on a photo of a couple at odds on a playground swing set is certainly more enticing than a song built on the oddities of a kooky doll. Perhaps if Oliver would have created his song cycle based solely on the ups and downs of relationships, the results would have been more distinctive and relatable. Some of the songs are not perfectly matched to the photos as well which halts momentum. Nevertheless, his ambitious work beckons the audience to examine the trials and tribulations of life through focus, perspective and the sheer passage of time.

Director AJ Breslin helms Oliver and Murphy’s world with very little interference. Due to the Mathile’s intimacy, this breezy production instantly conjures a cozy, coffee shop vibe which suits the show’s introspective nature and important attention to projections. Breslin’s minimalist, straightforward approach clearly allows each song to speak for itself, but at the same rate it’s difficult to hear some of the more frenzied lyrics. Still, his committed, energetic and passionate five-member cast, taking on the vocal challenges of the harmonically intricate score with vim and verve under the music direction of David McKibben, joins forces with ample opportunities to entertain. Natalie Sanders and Zach King, a volatile Queenie and Burrs last season in Dare to Defy’s “The Wild Party,” winningly reunite for the spirited “Make Me Happy.” Sanders, looking as statuesque as ever in basic black, wonderfully opens the show with “Stop Time” and notably drives the dark high school drama of “The Ballad of Sara Berry” with gusto. It’s also great to see Alan Ruddy and Danielle Kubasky reuniting for the first time since appearing as and Princeton and Kate Monster in Beavercreek Community Theatre’s 2015 production of “Avenue Q,” Ruddy, effectively balancing comedy and poignancy throughout, strongly renders “The Seraph” while Kubasky shines in “Twisted Teeth.” Skyler McNeely, who appeared with Sanders in Sinclair Community College’s 2015 production of “Songs for a New World,” teams with Kubasky for a terrifically emotive rendition of the heartbreaking “Hemming & Hawing” chronicling the twisted complications and imperfections of love. Keyboardist Nick Garvin leads a fine five-piece band.

The contemporary pop/rock/punk essence of “35MM” may not appeal to musical theater fans more inclined to embrace Rodgers and Hammerstein, but it’s a prime example of Dare to Defy’s eagerness to look outside the box.

“35MM: A Musical Exhibition” continues Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 8 at 2 and 8 p.m. inside the Mathile Theatre of the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. The production is performed in 80 minutes without intermission. Tickets are $19.50-$24.50. For tickets or more information, call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit ticketcenterstage.com. Patrons are reminded the show contains adult language.

Bourbon Street Cafe: Oooh, That Chicken….

October 6, 2016 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Bourbon Chicken – Their signature dish and main draw

Bourbon Street is again on Brown Street, and has been for a while.  The Bourbon Street Grill and Cafe is in a no frills dining room where the line can get long, but it goes fast.  From UD Students, to locals, people come from all over.  Whether for a work lunch, or taking dinner home, people are getting wise to this place.  Why? It is simple – GOOD FOOD, GOOD VALUE!  And …. oooooh that chicken, …. people go crazy over it !

This place is EXACTLY what Food Adventures is about… a locally owned spot where practically everything on the menu is a winner.  We should know it, because in the 6 or 7 times we have visited, Bourbon Street Grill & Cafe, we have tried practically every menu item.  And that’s what sets our blog apart.

Located at 1043 Brown Street

HERE’S THE SKINNY on BOURBON STREET GRILL & CAFE:

— Located at 1043 Brown St. in Dayton, they are open everyday from 11am-9pm, except Sundays when they are closed.

— Owned by Hassan Abdalla, who moved to Dayton as young adult from the Middle East.  He always had the dream of being a pilot.  His father passed away unexpectedly, forever prolonging that dream and Hassan found himself working in kitchens to make ends meet.  He worked himself up

Blackened Salmon over Corn and Potatoes

to high end restaurants, like L’Auberge.  He then decided to open his own business, for years doing catering and festivals.  He opened a restaurant on W Second Street, then took an opportunity on a new location on Brown Street.

— They still cater and make several festival appearances during the year.

— Note that their chicken is grilled thigh meat, that is pulled and finished on the flat grill and cubed.  The result is a one of a kind, almost melt in your mouth taste.

— Helpful and hard working staff, always busting their butts to fill orders.

We first were exposed to these guys at festivals, and after eating their food at Big Brews and Blues, then Garlic Fest, we have been hitting the brick and mortar location regularly.  Over time, the Food Adventure Crew has developed a list of Bourbon Street Grill and Cafe’s absolute best dishes.  Or as we call them, our patented “Must Eats.”

Spicy Chicken over White Rice

MUST EATS at BOURBON STREET GRILL & CAFE:

— BOURBON CHICKEN:  The signature dish.  The mother ship on a plate.  We suggest white rice or spicy rice with this, although many enjoy lo mein noodles or steamed vegetables as a side.  When they serve this chicken, they scoop it up, then get another scoop of sauce and drizzle it over top.  We drool every time.

Sides served right out of the piping hot steamers

— BLACKENED SALMON:  Cajun spices dust the pan seared salmon filet.  Again we suggest it over rice, but there are so many choices from beans to corn to potatoes, the sky is the limit.  But the Salmon… holy cow is it good.

— SPICY CHICKEN:  This is the Big Ragu’s favorite dish.  He sweated in the summer heat and got lit up at a couple of festivals but it was worth it.  He likes the spicy chicken poured over white rice, to cool down some of the heat.  But choose whatever side you want.

Havent had cornbread this good since Burbanks

— CORNBREAD: An incredible throwback to southern style cornbread.  One slight problem, they do not have butter on site.  So if you are eating in, byob – “bring your own butter.”  We could eat a brownie pan of this stuff.

— THE CHEESEBURGER: A 1/3 pound burger patty loaded on a sturdy bun with all the fixins.  They top it off right.  A delicious mix of flavors, napkins recommended for this one.

Honorable Mention:  — The PHILLY CHEESESTEAK SANDWICH is a nice surprise (get extra mayo).  Also, the BLACKENED SEA BASS is delicious.

Even their Burger surprised us

From salads to beans, to edible fried tortilla bowl options, you have an open canvas.  With so many good entrees and sides to choose from, you can get lost in their menu.  One thing you wont lose, is a lot of money, because the menu is a great value.

Now you know about this stellar place on Brown Street.  Go check out Bourbon Street Grill & Cafe and make your own combinations.  It is a great place, with an incredible owners story behind it. A story of hard work and perserverence.

Make sure you browse the photos below in our picture gallery.  Our food pics are incomparable.

Remember, we are not food critics, we are 3 people with a passion for food.  Follow Food Adventures on our Facebook Page by clicking HERE.  It is a foodie’s paradise.  Also, catch our upcoming appearances on DaytonFoodies.com since 2008.

No Dakota Access Pipeline: From the Heart We Cry
An Event to Support Protectors of the Water

On Sunday, October 9th, concerned citizens from across the Miami Valley will join with Racial Justice NOW! And the West Dayton Youth Task Force to stand in solidarity with Standing Rock Camp, as they work to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline, and to protect the water supply for communities in North Dakota and throughout the country.

In a historic moment of nonviolent resistance, thousands of people calling themselves protectors, not protestors, have gathered in North Dakota, to demand President Obama reject this dirty and dangerous proposal. This pipeline is a threat to Native heritage, their homes, and will be a climate disaster.

This is a prayerful follow-up to the action earlier this month, at Stroop and Far Hills Ave, which called for President Obama to stop all construction permanently on the pipeline in solidarity with a national day of protest. Shortly after that, construction was temporarily halted, but just for a 20-mile area on either side of the river. On October 9, groups and individuals are invited to share prayers, songs, chants, drums, poetry, art, and other forms of expression. A signed banner/cloth will be sent to the camp to show love and support.

WHAT: A peaceful, love-centric event sponsored by Racal Justice NOW! And the West Dayton Youth Task Force in opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline.

WHO: Concerned citizens from Dayton and across the Miami Valley.  Guy Jones, a Lakota Sioux native of Standing Rock, is the featured speaker, as well as special guests from the Native American community.

WHEN: 3 – 6pm, Sunday, October 9

WHERE: Dayton Boys Prep Academy @ Roosevelt Commons, 1923 W Third St, Dayton OH.

HOW YOU CAN HELP: Donate to help the protectors. The Cincinnati-based group Red Road Camp will deliver donations to Standing Rock Camp. Requested items include winter gear, cold weather sleeping bags, clean socks, blankets, biodegradable items, feminine products, plasticware, plates, and bowls (trying to eliminate waste), dish liquid, canvas tents, tent heaters, 2X4s, and plywood.  And please, NO single-use water bottles.

The Clydesdales Are In Town

October 5, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

Heidelberg Distributing confirmed that The Budweiser Clydesdales have made it to Dayton to make some special appearances around town.

florida-daily-life_3

On April 7, 1933, August A. Busch, Jr. and Adolphus Busch III surprised their father, August A. Busch, Sr., with the gift of a six-horse Clydesdale hitch to commemorate the repeal of Prohibition.

Shortly after the hitch was introduced, the six-horse Clydesdale team was increased to eight. On March 30, 1950, in commemoration of the opening of the Newark Brewery, a Dalmatian was introduced as the Budweiser Clydesdales’ mascot. Now, a Dalmatian travels with each of the Clydesdale hitches. Today, Anheuser-Busch owns approximately 250 Clydesdales; they continue to be an enduring symbol of the brewer’s heritage, tradition and commitment to quality.

These majestic horses  are scheduled to make several appearances in the area October 6 through 8, including:

Thursday, October 6 – Dayton Children’s Hospital, 10:30am, Noon; One Horse on display near the Main Entrance

Friday, October 7 – Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway, noon – 2pm in the North Parking Lot; Whole Hitch on display – open to all ages

Saturday, October 8 – Speedway Store Grand Opening at 90 N. Xenia Drive in Enon, 10:30 – 11:30am; Whole Hitch on display

h41

Facts About the Clydesdales:

To qualify for one of the traveling hitches, a Budweiser Clydesdale must be a gelding at least four years of age, stand 72 inches at the shoulder when fully mature, weigh between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds, have a bay coat, four white legs,a white blaze, and a black mane and tail.

Each hitch horse will consume as much as 20 to 25 quarts of whole grains, minerals and vitamins, 50 to 60 pounds of hay, and 30 gallons of water per day.

Expert groomers travel on the road with the hitch. They are on the road at least 10 months every year.  When necessary, one handler provides around-the-clock care for the horses, ensuring their safety and comfort.

There are eight horses driven at any one time, but ten horses are on each team to provide alternates for the hitch when needed. Each hitch travels with a Dalmatian. In the early days of brewing, Dalmatians were bred and trained to protect the horses and guard the wagon when the driver went inside to make deliveries.

Transportation for each hitch requires three 50-foot semis. Two carry the horses, the third transports a red, white and gold beer wagon and other equipment.

Clydesdale horseshoes measure more than 20 inches from end to end and weigh about 5 pounds which is more than twice as long and five times as heavy as the shoe worn by a light horse. A horse’s hoof is made of a nerveless, horn-like substance similar to the human fingernail so being fitted for shoes affects the animal no more than a manicure affects people.

Why Is Mike Building An Indoor Bike Park?

October 4, 2016 By Bryan Suddith

1654967_10152660196201124_1838755000_oWe caught Mike Bisig right before he took the stage with the Cricketbows at Jimmies Ladder 11 this week. Mike is a high school music teacher during the day, rock band guitarist at night, and he is the guy who is bringing an indoor bike park to Dayton.

Dayton deserves a place where enthusiasts can ride, no matter the weather.  Kids deserve a safe place to ride where they can increase their cycling skills without the worry of automobile traffic or crowded bike paths.  Mike’s Indoor Bike Park will provide these things while working to bring the cycling community together and bring new life into Dayton’s downtown area.

We spoke with Mike about this newest addition to Dayton. He confirmed the former manufacturing facility that is located just east of the Water Street development off of East First Street is under contract. Mike said if things continue to move on schedule, he will open doors to riders in early 2017.

14444882_1832228330397043_7188745772940588688_o

We asked Mike about the biggest hurdle to creating something like this in Dayton. Mike stated that there is no real business model for a facility of this kind.  There are less than 10 indoor bike parks of this type in the US. Even fewer that are stand alone facilities that are also profitable. Mike has been studying Ray’s Mountain Bike Park in Cleveland as the model for his park in Dayton.

Ray’s Mountain Bike park in Cleveland was the first and the most successful indoor bike park. Mike has made more than 30 trips to Cleveland to ride and study the park. Mike is using Ray’s as a template but is giving it a unique Dayton spin. Mike plans to replicate the season pass model from Ray’s, but at a lower price point. The Dayton park will also be open year round accommodating riders when the weather is too cold, too wet or trails are unusable in local parks.bikemike2_1_orig

The Dayton park is being built to be accessible to all skill levels and bikes. Most riders, according to Bisig will be coming in with a type of mountain bike. BMX bikes will also find the park fitting for their type of riding. During our conversation, Mike expressed how the design in Dayton is created to be a low barrier to entrance, meaning kids and adults can find something to do without a special or expensive bike upgrade. Bring a bike, bring a helmet and plan to ride.

Throughout our talk Mike returned time and time again to teaching. Mike is a teacher at heart and his vision is for the Bike Park to be a community centered facility where kids learn to ride and learn to ride safely. Mike hopes to partner with groups to teach bike safety for indoor riding and on the road riding. Mike is aware of Dayton’s love affair with the bicycle and he hopes to honor that with Mikes Bike Park.
14808649_1474738083-2858
Mike was pleased to report that the necessary zoning variance has been granted by the City of Dayton in recent days. That was the last major hurdle prior to finalizing the purchase. We asked Mike: What is the most surprising part of starting a business like this in Dayton?

Mike said the most exciting and most surprising part has been the outpouring of support and offers of volunteer help. He reiterated that the Dayton bike community is a generous one and he is busy managing all the offers for help.

bisig-face_origAre you a bicyclist or a business owner and interested in helping? Mike says visit the park’s webpage for details on sponsorships and volunteering. The park still has room for corporate sponsorships as well. Businesses can partner in a few different ways.

Besides writing a check, material donations and professional services are also welcomed.  Building an indoor bicycle park requires an immense amount of wood and lumber.  There is a  need for standard sized lumber (2×4, 2×6, 4×4, etc.) as well as plywood, larger logs, pieces of trees, and just about any other larger pieces of wood that you can think of.  They will be painting many of the walls inside the park and can use donations of paint, rollers, brushes, sand paper, and other basic painting materials.
If you can donate materials, please CLICK HERE .

There is a grassroots campaign to help pay for the cost of building the wooden structures inside of Mike’s Indoor Bike Park.  These funds will also be used to upgrade the restroom and changing facilities, install a state-of-the-art video system for watching riders throughout the park, and to help make Mike’s Indoor Bike Park as safe as possible for all riders.  Every dollar earned from this campaign will go towards creating an amazing riding experience for cyclists of all ability levels.  Every dollar helps, so if you can give, give what you can so we can all enjoy the best indoor riding experience possible!  CLICK HERE to donate today.

Get A Seat At The Longest Table

October 3, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

thelongesttable Imagine a dinner table the length of the Third Street Bridge. Envision it packed with Daytonians from every pocket of the city. At this table, UpDayton and other interested parties can help serve a meal and challenge participants to re-think their assumptions about other parts of town and the people who live there. Volunteers will figure out how to bring this huge meal to life, how to inspire impactful dialogue, and how to fill the table with people who believe in a more open, connected Dayton.

“What’s better than having folks come together to break bread with strangers and talk about the future of Dayton?” says Bryan Stewart, The Longest Table Project organizer.

Stewart says he came up with the idea when a colleagu14484740_870578093072590_7791812207877964811_ne reached out to him and showed him a similar event that happened last fall in Tallahassee, Fla. Stewart talked with organizers in Florida to learn how they planned the event.

Stewart pitched the idea, based on a similar event that took place in Tallahassee last fall,  at the  UpDayton Summit, an annual conference in which attendees vote on which community-based projects will receive $1,000 and assistance from UpDayton. Stewart was one of three winners at this year’s conference in April.  Of course, $1000 doesn’t cover the cost of this project, so donations are welcome and the team will also be guest bartending tonight at Fifth Street Brewpub starting at 6pm.

A team of volunteers has been working for months to work on the logistics, the food donations, and getting a diverse group of Miami Valley residents  to the table.

Volunteer Julio Mateo decided to join the Longest Table after attending the UpDayton summit. Mate14379933_868636856600047_1864039995943412753_oo is on the dialogue committee, which develops ways for people to start conversation. For example, the table will be lined with placemats with questions on them. One question may be, “What’s your favorite part about your neighborhood? How can you make it even better?”

“We’re trying to create questions that can help people initiate conversations or that can lead people from just meeting a brand new person to working together on ways Dayton can be more forward,” says Mateo.

14322636_865872666876466_7989244798301054206_nOf course to pull this off, hundreds of volunteers will be needed, for set up, helping with parking, table hosts, and of course clean up.  Sign up to volunteer here.

If you’d like a seat at the table on Sat, Oct 15th you can register online. The meal is free, with most of it being provided by the House of Bread. It will be a very simple meal, because the conversation in the centerpiece of this event. Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite dessert to share.  Due to the nature of this event those with food allergies and other dietary restrictions will need to make their own decisions about whether to attend or not, as no special meal concessions will be available.

Welcome to Week 34 of Mystery Mondays. The answer to Week 33’s Mystery Photo is: The Happy Day Statue at RiverScape MetroPark in Downtown Dayton along with a special appearance by my late beloved Scottish Terrier (aka Scottie) Lucy. I took this photo on September 22, 2016 during our final adventure together, the morning I had to have her put down after a short but painful illness. She would’ve been 12 years old on November 1, 2016.
