RUBIGIRLS to be HORSING AROUND at DERBY DAY BRUNCH!

April 18, 2017 By Joshua Stucky

Hats Off to RubiBrunch!

Finally, someone has claimed the Kentucky Derby as the big party it should be for Dayton. Mimosas, Bloody Marys and ‘HATS’-TRAVAGANZA will be the highlights of the big event taking place on Saturday, May 6th at the Wright-Dunbar Events Center on Third Street.  The party, a tribute to the Derby and the fabulous hats featured there each year, will actually have prizes for the most-outrageous, most glamorous and best racing theme bonnets. This is going to be a contest for the ages!
This much anticipated event will feature performances by Dayton’s Beloved RubiGirls, food from SAGECRAFT Catering & Events, a parade of Derby Hats with prizes for the aforementioned categories. There will also be fine hats modeled by local Millinery “BRIM“, local coffee will be provided and some silly, exciting games!

McNeal and Johnson of RubiGirl fame!

“Looking around the Miami Valley, we began to realize that the Kentucky Derby was mostly overlooked. It seemed a natural fit to bring the RubiGirls, and their wackiness, in as sponsors of a day dedicated to crazy hats and featured drinks.” says Brent Johnson. “Mimosas and Bloody Marys are just the introduction to the party. We will also have a horse pinata, filled with….well you’ll have to come and see! Also, some Derby themed games for folks to play!”
“And this is a family-themed event. We are hoping some folks will bring their kids along to enjoy a day of frivolity and fun!” adds Jonathan McNeal. Johnson and McNeal both perform with the RubiGirls.
The Coliseum at the fairgrounds is the venue for the first-ever brunch. “It provides us space for some activities and production numbers we are planning.” McNeal went on to say, “The RubiGirls have been working tirelessly to raise money for area charities, and this event will help us secure funds for our Clubhouse in Dayton.”

In the past couple of years, the RubiGirls have provided funding for such charities as the Foodbank, Equitas Health, St. Vincent de Paul Shelters and House of Bread, just to name a few of the many!
The event will run from 11am – 2pm, giving all participants time to head home and see the actual Run for the Roses! The RubiGirls are a 501c3 not-for-profit organization located in Dayton, Ohio.

The Rose to Host Willie Nelson & Family

April 17, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Country music icon Willie Nelson will team up with special guest Dawes for a not-to-be-missed concert at Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, OH on Tuesday, July 11th.

ABOUT WILLIE NELSON

With a six-decade career and 200 plus albums, this iconic Texan is the creative genius behind the historic recordings of Crazy, Red Headed Stranger, and Stardust. Willie Nelson has earned every conceivable award as a musician and amassed reputable credentials as an author, actor, and activist. He continues to thrive as a relevant and progressive musical and cultural force.

In recent years, he has delivered more than 10 new album releases, released a Top 10 New York Times’ bestsellers book, again headlined Farm Aid, an event he co-founded in 1985, received his 5th degree black belt in Gong Kwon Yu Sul, headlined the last three years of the on-going Luck Reunion food and music festival at his ranch in Luck, TX during SXSW, announced the launch of his cannabis company Willie’s Reserve, and graced the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

In 2015, Nelson added “It’s A Long Story: My Life,” the unvarnished and complete story of Willie, hit bookshelves and landed him on the New York Times’ bestsellers list; and a new studio album with Merle Haggard titled Django And Jimmie, which debuted at #1 on Billboard‘s Country album chart and #7 on Billboard‘s Top 200 album chart. In November 2015, the Library of Congress honored him with their Gershwin Prize for Popular Song for his contributions to popular music. He is the first country artist to receive the distinguished award. And 2016 began with the release of Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin, a collection of 11 newly recorded Gershwin classics. The album debuted at #1 on both the Top Current Jazz chart and the Top Traditional Jazz chart, as well as earned him a Grammy Award for the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. In September, came For the Good Times: A Tribute to Ray Price, an album of newly recorded interpretations of 12 Ray Price songs. While a month later, Nelson released Pretty Paper, his new novel inspired his classic holiday song of the same title about a legless man who sold wrapping paper in front of a Ft. Worth, TX department store.

In April 2017, Nelson releases God’s Problem Child, his latest studio album with 13 new songs. Nelson continues to record more new songs for upcoming projects as well as touring throughout North America year long.

ABOUT DAWES

After recording its last two albums, Stories Don’t End and All Your Favorite Bands, in Asheville, North Carolina, and Nashville, respectively, the Los Angeles band has returned to the city that has been both home and inspiration since its inception in 2009 to record its fifth album, We’re All Gonna Die, with longtime friend and Grammy nominated producer Blake Mills at the helm.

It was clear from the onset that home was much more than a physical place for Dawes. It was a state of mind. For the band-guitarist/singer Taylor Goldsmith, drummer Griffin Goldsmith (Taylor’s younger brother), bassist Wylie Gelber, and new keyboardist Lee Pardini, who took over from Tay Strathairn last fall-it also meant getting to a point where everyone felt they had found a sound that was uniquely their own, equivalent to an author finding their own voice.

“The dream has been not to have someone say, ‘You sound like Warren Zevon in this song or Bob Dylan with this song,’ but where someone hears a first few notes of a track, even before the words come in, and they know it’s Dawes,” says Taylor Goldsmith. “And they say, ‘That’s Wylie, that’s Griffin, that’s Taylor, that’s Lee. That’s the way they play together.'”

“I think we’ve finally done that on this record.” All of their records seemed to have been in service to getting to that point, each album willfully different, every one a point on a continuum. First, the acoustic-based folk-rock and close harmonies of North Hills that brought to mind nothing so much as the Band’s Music From Big Pink. The cosmic country-rock of Nothing Is Wrong, an album that conjured up visions of Gram Parson’s Nudie suits. The smart, wordy, Joan Didion-inspired Stories Don’t End, then the literate, post-breakup yowl of All Your Favorite Bands, with its crisp lyrics and Dire Straits guitars, masterfully capturing their live genius in a way none of their other albums had.

We’re All Gonna Die is dense with stories and brilliant, telling images that are more like movies than four-and-a-half-minute songs, all containing a moral, a proverb, advice or hope, like a scrap of paper tucked instead a Chinese fortune cookie, nudging listeners towards understanding, clarity, or at best, enlightenment.

Tickets for the Huber Heights show will go on sale to the public beginning 11:00am on Friday, April 21ST at www.Ticketmaster.com, www.Rosemusiccenter.com, and the Rose Music Center box office. Charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000.

Huey Lewis and The News – one of America’s greatest rock & roll bands – is set to perform at Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, OH on Friday, July 21st. As they enter their 38th year together, their contagious brand of music has outlasted countless trends and is as fresh today as ever.

Formed from two rival Bay Area bands in 1979, Huey Lewis and The News continue to thrill audiences worldwide, selling over 20 million albums in the process, earning them the right to mark their place on the pop history map.

These Grammy Award winners have written and performed such classic Top Ten Hits as “Heart of Rock & Roll”, “Stuck With You”, “I Want A New Drug”, “If This Is It”, “Hip To Be Square” “Do You Believe In Love” and “Workin’ For A Livin”.  The group also wrote and performed “The Power of Love” and “Back in Time” for the hit film Back To The Future. “The Power of Love”, nominated for an Academy Award, went to #1 on Billboard’s singles chart, and was a smash hit worldwide.

As great a recording career as the band has had, there is something extra special about a Huey Lewis & The News live show. They incorporate a variety of musical influences including R&B and soul to create their own unique sound. Frontman Huey Lewis’ unmistakable voice has a rich, textured quality that lends itself well to not just their hits, but also to the variety of other songs featured in the show. Lewis also brings some bluesy tones to the performance when he breaks out into his harmonica solos. One of the highlights of the show is their a-cappella rendition of early rock n’ roll classics such as “It’s Alright”, “Little Bitty Pretty One” and “Sixty Minute Man”.

Huey Lewis & The News are: Huey Lewis (vocals and harmonica), Johnny Colla (saxophone, guitar and vocals), Bill Gibson (drums, percussion and vocals), Sean Hopper (keyboards and vocals), Stef Burns (guitars and vocals) and John Pierce (bass).  The live show features their long time horn section of San Francisco bay area luminaries: Rob Sudduth (tenor saxophone), Marvin McFadden (trumpet), and Johnnie Bamont (baritone saxophone).

Huey Lewis & The News have a love of music that comes through in everything they do. Be it their albums, their live performances, or the way they interact with their fans, they are a band with “Heart and Soul”.

4 Reasons to Go See ‘Motown’

April 16, 2017 By Russell Florence, Jr.

The toe-tapping, hand-clapping and incredibly soulful national tour of “Motown the Musical,” presented by the Victoria Theatre Association’s Premier Health Broadway Series, continues through Sunday, April 16 at the Schuster Center.

Chester Gregory (Berry Gordy) and the cast of Motown (Photo by Joan Marcus)

Nominated for four 2013 Tony Awards, “Motown” chronicles the highs and lows of the iconic Detroit-based record label founded by Berry Gordy (vividly portrayed by Chester Gregory of Broadway’s “Sister Act” and “Tarzan”). Using the framework of the label’s famed 25th anniversary concert in 1983, the show depicts how Gordy meticulously molded the careers of some of the most influential African-American artists in recording history including Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, and Michael Jackson. Nearly 60 classic songs accent the story which breezily follows the label through eventful periods of joy, promise, heartbreak, and turmoil.
Here are four reasons why you should see this entertaining crowd-pleaser, which is notably staged by Dayton native Schele Williams who served as associate director on the original Broadway production working closely with Gordy and director Charles Randolph-Wright.

THERE’S MORE TO THE STORY
Based on Gordy’s 1994 book “To Be Loved: The Music, The Magic, The Memories of Motown,” “Motown” is by no means a tribute concert. The music certainly bolsters the action, but Gordy doesn’t cheat the audience by simply letting the songs tell the story. Although he stood by his creed stating “competition breeds champions,” Gordy faced considerable adversity. He frankly details the infighting, jealousy, racism, contractual predicaments, financial calamites, and misunderstandings that occurred. Interestingly, he devotes significant time to his relationship with Diana Ross (a wonderfully engaging and elegant Allison Semmes dazzlingly costumed by “Project Runway” finalist Emilio Sosa), but thankfully other key players get their due. “At Motown, we called ourselves a family,” Gordy says in the show’s production notes. “And we were – a big family.”

ACTORS EMBODY SPIRIT OF LEGENDS

David Kaverman as Smokey Robinson in Motown (Photo by Joan Marcus)

The cast of “Motown,” which includes Wright State University graduate Jeremy Gaston of Springfield, is uniquely required to portray individuals firmly cemented in the hearts and minds of generations of music lovers. Moreover, many of these legendary artists are still alive. However, the challenge is handled skillfully from the aforementioned Gregory and Semmes (who starred in the show’s 2016 Broadway return engagement) to the quietly endearing David Kaverman as tunesmith Smokey Robinson. “Smokey is a cool dude with a poet’s heart,” Kaverman said. “I’m capturing his essence –not impersonating him. Smokey is very charismatic and star quality exudes from him. He did so much for Motown, particularly bringing many acts from the neighborhood to the label like The Supremes. But the director and creative team (stressed the importance) that we are playing real people with real personalities who had real input. Every moment in the show is a moment that actually happened and has weight. Berry Gordy gave us notes on how to portray the characters as well. I also met Smokey Robinson when the tour was in L.A. so it was great to get his stamp of approval.”

NOSTALGIA FUELED BY CAVALCADE OF HITS
Martha and the Vandellas said it best: “All you need is music, sweet music.” And you can’t get any better than the cavalcade of hits in this showcase, vibrantly choreographed by Patricia Wilcox and Warren Adams, including “Dancing in the Street,” “Shop Around,” “My Guy,” “You’re All I Need to Get By,” “Please, Mr. Postman,” “Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “What’s Going On,” “Reach Out (I’ll Be There),” “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” “Stop in the Name of Love,” and “My Girl.” “The music is so nostalgic,” Kaverman noted. “People gravitate toward music they heard in their teens or 20s and that describes our audience. The music really captured a romanticized sense of love as well. The music still pervades our culture today because it’s so good. Whether you hear these songs on the radio or in a grocery store, they will always be with us and in us as Americans.”

A SPECIAL SING-A-LONG
Adhering to the fact that music is a universal and unifying language, “Motown” brings the audience to the forefront in Act 2. Semmes’ charming rendition of “Reach Out and Touch” evolves into a heartwarming sing-a-long bound to leave a smile on your face. “Hearing the audience sing and wave their hands is a beautiful moment,” Kaverman said. “People who typically go to church might be used to acknowledging the person next to them, but it rarely happens in the theater. It’s a moment that allows the audience to understand that we’re all in this world and this country and this show together. It’s a message of togetherness that’s very creative.”

“Motown the Musical” concludes today at the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets, Dayton. Performances are at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30-$97. For tickets or more information, call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit ticketcenterstage.com.

Wear a Work of Art From Local Artist Mb Hopkins

April 15, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Dayton artist Mb Hopkins created this painting entitled “Huddled Masses,” and was giving prints to people in exchange for their contribution to the local Unitarian Fellowship for World Peace. This organization provides no-fee mental health services in several languages to refugees and immigrants.

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
                                                              — Emma Lazarus
You can now sport this message on your chest and proceeds will also go to the Dayton nonprofit, Unitarian Fellowship for World Peace.  Order your t-shirt online.
The original painting, which is 2-ft by 4-ft, will be sold to the highest bidder at the DVAC Annual Auction on April 28, 2017, with all proceeds from that sale going directly to DVAC, to help offset their operating expenses.  If you would like to own your own print, you can find them at Eclectic Essentials and CLASH in the Oregon District and at Sam And Eddies Open Books in Yellow Springs!
