Friday is National Donut Day

May 31, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

There’s something about Donuts that get people really excited.  That excitement level is rising for Friday’s celebration of National Donut Day, always celebrated the first Friday in June. National Doughnut Day started in 1938 as a fund raiser for Chicago’s The Salvation Army. Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression, and to honor The Salvation Army “Lassies” of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers.

Dayton is home to lots of independent shops, and yes a few of the national chains.  Don’t worry if you can’t get to all these donut stops at once, there are three other doughnut holidays: International Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day is widely recognized as June 8, National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day is celebrated on September 14 and Buy a doughnut Day occurs on October 30.

Here’s a round up the special promotions we know about  happening in the Miami Valley on Friday.  If we missed any, just let us know in the comments below.

Bear Creek Donuts –  80 S. Main Street in Miamisburg
Open daily at 6:30am

Wwill be offering a free 13th donut for every dozen purchased. This was our busiest day last year and they highly recommend preordering your donuts.  They’ll be sure to stock lots of their specialty donuts and will be bringing back their Monster Energy donut, that was a big hit last year.

Bill’s Donut Shop 268 N. Main St. in Centerville
open 24 hours

They’ve been cranking out the pastries for over 50 years and making lists  like Saveur magazine’s “The 50 Finest Donut Shops in America, USA Today’s “10 Great Places to Get Doughnuts,” Thrillists “best-in-the-U.S.” list and mentions on the Ellen tv show.  Bill’s will   be debuting a brand new donut and every one that visits will get a sample.

Cake, Hope & Love–  1490 N Fairfield Rd, Ste B in Beavercreek
Open noon – 6pm Mon- Tours, 11am – 5pm Saturday
CH & L will be abandoning their usual cupcakes for the day and will be serving up just donuts! But don’t worry cake nation- many of the fun flavors they are know for will be in doughnut form.  Look for Raspberry Red Velvet, Maple Bacon and salted caramel pretzel and of course their will be sprinkles, lots and lots of sprinkles.

District 6 Donuts–  6 Oakwood Ave, Dayton

Dunkin’ Donuts:  find a store near you
Buy any beverage on Friday, June 2, and you’ll get a choice of any free doughnut at Dunkin.  They are also debuting two new donuts:

“The Vanilla Cake Batter Donut features vanilla-flavored cake batter filling, frosted with chocolate icing and topped with confetti sprinkles, while the Dunkin’ Donuts Sprinkles Donut is frosted with white icing and topped with pink and orange sprinkles shaped like the brand’s iconic ‘DD’ logo.

Jim’s Donut Shop – 122 E National Rd Vandalia
open 24 hours
Buy a large coffee and get a free donut.  Jim’s will also be offering a Special Spectacular Strawberry Donut, while supplies last

Sub T – Taking the stage back!

May 31, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Sub T is Chuckie Love on bass, Danny Sauers on Sax, Rob Brockman on Drums, and Chris Coalt on guitar. They joined forces to start a Wednesday night jam (right here) at their favorite spot, J-Alan’s; and one of the major motivations to get these doors open again was to give them back their stage. Mission Accomplished.

Announcing the first Levitt Dayton concert!

May 30, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Stay tuned for more details as we get closer to the concert date.As a sneak peak to what will take place starting in 2018 on the Levitt Dayton stage, The Friends of Levitt Pavilion have announced a FREE Levitt Pavilion Preview Concert! The Levitt National Tour will present The Suffers on Thursday, August 17th at Dave Hall Plaza. The Suffers are a critical sensation and rising stars – an 8–piece powerhouse that will get you dancing to their fiery blend of Gulf Coast Soul meets rock meets funk!

Just as much influenced by classic rock & roll, country, Latin and Southern hip hop as they are the Stax/Volt or Muscle Shoals era.  Late night legend David Letterman proclaimed in early 2015 “If you cant do this, get out of the business”, let it be known that The Suffers are here to stay!  With a year that included performances for NPR’s Tiny Desk, Newport Folk Fest, Austin City Limits Music Festival and The Late Show, The Suffers have delivered over 150 stirring performances of their signature 3rd Coast Soul sound to thousands of new and old fans alike. The large ensemble packs each position of the rhythm and horn section with a level of talent and taste that provides the perfect foundation for singer Kam Franklin’s massive voice. The band’s sincerity and emotion are laid bare in their music, which has garnered an audience so broad and varied that they may prove to be the panacea for a jaded and stratified live music scene

Stay tuned for more details as we get closer to the concert date.

The Levitt Pavilion is close to their $5 million goal to build a state-of-the-art music venue in Downtown Dayton. As of press time they $390,000 short of their goal and they are still looking for donors to help to close the gap. Donate online through the Dayton Foundation today and help make Levitt Pavilion Dayton a reality!! Every donation will make an impact, from $5 to $50,000 you will be part of Levitt Pavilion Dayton and help create a community through music. Donations of $2,500 and above will be permanently recognized in the park. Thank you to everyone in the community who has already contributed.

Grab Your Cheap Sunglasses, ZZ Top Coming to Town

May 30, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, ZZ Top, will bring The Tonnage Tour to Huber Heights, Ohio at Rose Music Center on Sunday, September 24th. The show will feature support by Black Stone Cherry.

ZZ TOP, “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas,” lay undisputed claim to being the longest running major rock band with original personnel intact. In 2004, the Texas trio (Billy F Gibbons, Dusty Hill, Frank Beard) was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. After more than 45 years of rock, blues, and boogie on the road and in the studio, the trio is still very much together.

The elements that keep ZZ TOP fresh, enduring and above the transitory fray can be summed up in the three words of the band’s internal mantra: “Tone, Taste and Tenacity.”  Of course, the three members of the band have done their utmost to do their part in assuring that ZZ TOP prevails.  As genuine roots musicians, the members of the band have few peers.  Billy is widely regarded as one of American finest blues guitarists working in the rock idiom.  Part mad scientist, part prankster, he’s a musical innovator of the highest order and a certified “guitar god.”

Dusty has long had an affinity for rock’s origins; his earliest performances as a child included Elvis songs convincingly performed.  Not only is he a bass virtuoso in his own right, his vocal prowess is awe-inspiring.  He’s the lead voice you hear on “Tush” and his ferocious vocals are heard, to great effect, on his idol Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock,” these days, often a concert encore number and recorded by the band on Fandango! Good natured and diligent, Dusty is the rock solid bottom of ZZ TOP.

Frank has also been keeping the beat in that great tradition.  As both a roots and progressive drummer, he has been acknowledged as key to the band’s powerful on-stage and in-studio presence. He and Dusty, in their early years together, served as Lightnin’ Hopkins’ rhythm section which, as Frank tells it, was a life changing experience.  He’s a rockin’ paradox who provides the pulse of ZZ TOP.

ZZ TOP’s music is always instantly recognizable, eminently powerful, profoundly soulful and 100% Texas American in derivation.  The band’s support for the blues is unwavering both as interpreters of the music and preservers of its legacy. ZZ TOP’s support and link to the blues remains as rock solid as the music they continue to play.  They have sold millions of records over the course of their career, they have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, have been officially designated as Heroes of The State of Texas, have been referenced in countless cartoons and sitcoms and are true rock icons but, against all odds, they’re really just doing what they’ve always done. They’re real and they’re surreal and they’re ZZ TOP.

Tickets for the Huber Heights show will go on sale to the public beginning 11:00am on Friday, June 2nd at www.Ticketmaster.com, www.Rosemusiccenter.com, and the Rose Music Center box office. Charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000.

All patrons who purchase a ticket to ZZ Top will be treated to a Pre-Show Craft Beer Tasting. Pre Show Tastings begin 90 minutes prior to the show and end 15 minutes before the concert begins. All Pre-Show Tastings will be located on the main concourse. Must be 21 years of age and have a valid ID to participate.

Dayton at Work and Play: White Lotus

May 30, 2017 By Bill Franz

Last week I visited the White Lotus, across the street from the downtown library. Yong was just opening up as I arrived and she took a few minutes to talk to me before her first customers came in.

“I’ve operated this restaurant since 2008” she told me. “I do all of the cooking and cleaning and everything. I was retired but didn’t like staying home.”

“I came to this country from Thailand in 1972. My husband was in the U.S. Air Force. They sent us to Montana first, and then we came to Dayton.”

“When we came to Dayton my husband told me I didn’t need to work. But I wanted to get out of the house. I didn’t want to work for anyone, though. My parents had their own business in Thailand, and that’s what I wanted for myself.”

“I approached a man who ran a big motel in Dayton and offered to lease his bar. I turned it into a successful night club. Then I used those same employees in a catering business I started. At one point I had 30 employees.”

“People would ask me how I became successful since I wasn’t born here and didn’t speak the language well. I always smiled and told them it was because of my personality. People like me.”

White Lotus is located at 327 E. Third Street

It’s open Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm.

For more information,

‘Wonder of the World’ Review – Dayton Theatre Guild – The Great Escape

May 27, 2017 By Russell Florence, Jr.

A frustrated and sheltered wife’s decision to turn over a new leaf reaches exciting, shocking, hilarious, and absurd proportions in David Lindsay-Abaire’s whimsical 2001 off-Broadway comedy “Wonder of the World,” excellently produced in its local premiere by the Dayton Theatre Guild.

Photo caption (left to right) Richard Young (Glen), Marcella Balin (Karla), Ian Manuel (Kip Harris), Kari Carter (Cass Harris), Scott Madden (Captain Mike), Debra Strauss (multiple roles), and Kerry Simpson (Lois Coleman) are featured in the Dayton Theatre Guild’s local premiere of David Lindsay-Abaire’s comedy “Wonder of the World” (contributed photo by Craig Roberts)

The absolutely splendid Kari Carter, delivering a knockout Guild debut, impressively drives this kooky if uneven vehicle as the disillusioned yet determined Cass Harris, a free-spirited and conflicted soul longing for adventure and renewed purpose after leaving her husband Kip. Bound for Niagara Falls with a notepad detailing over 280 goals from learning Swedish to wearing velvet, Cass ventures forth to correct mistakes in her life with the hope of finding opportunities to explore possibilities in an attempt to live to the fullest. As is typical in the bizarre and dysfunctional Lindsay-Abaire universe, Cass comes in contact with an assortment of funny eccentrics such as a suicidal alcoholic, goofy private investigators and a clown therapist. His roadmap ultimately grows disjointed (an overlong group therapy scene within the framework of “The Newlywed Game” deflates Act 2), but he appealingly injects great promise into Cass’ journey of self-discovery nonetheless by the end of the play. In fact, the action wonderfully culminates on the rushing waters of Niagara Falls imaginatively staged by director Saul Caplan with black-clad stagehands (the Invisibles) in full view of the audience assisting the action (per the Kabuki tradition of Kuroko).

Vividly executing her passionate portrayal with bubbly ease, Carter thrillingly conjures the sitcom-esque vivacity and chatty effervescence of such contemporary comediennes as Sarah Jessica Parker (the original Cass), Lena Dunham, Julie Bowen, and Tracee Ellis Ross. She notably masters the tricky nuances and rhythms enabling the script to remain snappy, witty and conversational while ensuring Cass’ emotional vulnerabilities are evident. As clingy Kip, coping as best as possible with his Barbie fetish, Ian Manuel, in a welcomed return to the Guild, lends very endearing support. He firmly balances Kip’s devotion for Cass with darker undertones giving credence to her choice to seek a new love. Kerry Simpson, in a refreshing principal capacity, is equally winning as Cass’ troubled sidekick Lois Coleman, the aforementioned alcoholic on a mission to become the next Annie Edson Taylor complete with barrel in tow. Marcella Balin and Richard Young are delightfully unified as oddballs Karla and Glen, hired by Kip to track down Cass. Scott Madden is enjoyably pleasant as Maid of the Mist’s Captain Mike, Cass’ desired flame. Debra Strauss is a versatile hoot in multiple zany roles including a helicopter pilot, three waitresses, and a clown. Doug Lowe, Bekki Madden, Carly Risenhoover-Peterson, and Tori T. Tuccillo complete the cast as the dutiful Invisibles, effectively handling the varied moving parts of Richard Lee Waldeck’s efficient set pieces. Linda Sellers’ costumes, Jason Vogel’s lighting design, Ryan Shannon’s sound design, and N. Lynn Brown’s properties and set dressing nicely complement the action.

Lindsay-Abaire’s plays include his splendid and heartbreaking 2007 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama “Rabbit Hole” in addition to “Fuddy Meers,” “Good People,” “Kimberly Akimbo,” and “Ripcord.” He also wrote the book and lyrics for “Shrek: The Musical” and the book for the musical “High Fidelity.” “Wonder of the World” isn’t a representation of his best work, but Carter’s wondrously wonderful performance specifically resonates as an affirming reminder to always choose to go on when life gets messy.

“Wonder of the World” concludes Sunday, May 28 at 3 p.m. at the Dayton Theatre Guild, 430 Wayne Ave., Dayton. Act 1 and Act 2 are performed in 60 minutes. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $13 for students. For tickets or more information, call (937) 278-5993 or visit daytontheatreguild.org. Patrons are advised the production contains adult language, fog effects and the sound of gunshots.

Grand Opening of DogBeery Brewing Taproom

May 26, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

In 2014 Tony Meyer and Chris Fede opened the DogBerry Brewing company in West Chester. The two had met while working at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and became beer buddies, often venturing out to try different beer styles and then began brewing beer together.  What started as a hobby turning into DogBerry Brewing, the name derived from  names of the streets they lived on—Dog Leg Court and Twinberry Court.

The brewery was a big success, which Meyer credits to the expanding craft beer industry, the demographics in West Chester, and the lack of craft breweries in the area.  Such a success that the partners decided it was time to grow, so they’ve moved 4 miles down the road and the new taproom at 9964 Crescent Park Drive, will open today at 4pm.

DB2 is bigger- almost twice the size, they’ve doubled their taps from 10 to 20 and upgraded their equipment to become a 10-barrel brewhouse. You can check out DogBerry Brewing’s all NEW taproom, enjoy their fabulous craft beers and of course some delicious grub from the BrewCity Sausage “Brat Mobile”.
