Shamrock Shakes & Other March Treats We Can’t Live Without! (Made Over)

March 10, 2018 By Shana Lloyd

March sure rolled in quick this year! Most of us are ready for Spring and seasonal sweet treats remind is it’s finally on the way! Okay so the Shamrock Shakes actually arrived in February but I’ve been trying to ignore that fact because the mere idea of them adds a few inches to my waistline. With more than 6o million served yearly, those tasty shakes draw more buzz than the McRib – that’s whole other article. At close to 400 calories, 14 grams of fat, 63 of the carbs I try to avoid and 11 grams of protein I wondered if there were a healthier makeover option for the Shamrock Shake. Watching my macros, not eating anything with preservatives and staying away from dairy has made life a little sad at times especially when a favorite like this rolls into town. But don’t fret, there’s hope! I dug up some yummy lighter alternatives.

It’s green. It’s minty. And it’s back for a limited time in select locations. Download the Shamrock Finder app for iOS and Android to find a #ShamrockShake near you. ☘?☘

Clean & Green Shamrock Shake – Recipe from Hungry Girl

Ingredients

3/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

1 oz. (about 6 tbsp.) vanilla protein powder with about 100 calories per serving

1/3 cup spinach leaves

1/8 tsp. peppermint extract

1 1/4 cups crushed ice or 6 – 10 ice cubes

Directions

Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend at high speed until smooth, stopping and stirring if needed.

Or this version from Cooking Light Magazine!

Or just have the damn thing and hit the treadmill after, whatever works for you!

Another March favorite……Girl Scout Cookies! But I’m partial to Samoas & big surprise Thin Mints. Who isn’t? Not gonna lie, there a few boxes of each in my kitchen right now. I tried to justify the purchase as a way of supporting future female leaders and entrepreneurs which is partly it, but really, COOKIES. Anyway I did happen to dig up a few make over recipes for those too.

Best Low Carb Thin Mints (Gluten Free!) – Recipe by AllDayIDreamAboutFood.com

Ingredients

Cookies

  • 1 3/4 cups almond flour
  • 1/3 cup cocao powder
  • 1/4 cup Swerve Sweetener
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg, slightly beaten
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp liquid stevia extract OR another 1/4 cup Swerve Sweetener

Coating

  • 1 tbsp butter or coconut oil, or 1/2 ounce cocoa butter* (see cook’s notes)
  • 7 oz sugar-free dark chocolate such as Lily’s OR 90% Lindt chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tsp peppermint extract

How to Make Them

Low Carb Samoa Recipe by Your Lighter Side

And if you’re feeling really ambitious, here’s 9 other Girl Scout Cookie makeover recipes you may love!

Making healthier choices has been a huge adjustment in my life, but the more I research and try new things the closer I get to feeling like making those choices doesn’t have to be such a burden. There is a lot of trial and error and there are days where I just throw in the towel and eat whatever I want. You have to have those moments I think but I always come back to how I feel when I am eating cleaner – and no cookie beats that!

Enjoy these makeovers. More coming soon + summer Grilling season is just around the corner.

Stay happy & healthy!

Playhouse South Moving South

March 8, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Playhouse South Community Theatre has just  announced that they will be moving their program to Springboro!

Tentatively in Spring of 2019, Playhouse South will be located in a permanent home in Springboro to help fulfill the need for more performing arts in the area. They have been closely working with  City Manager, Chris Pozzuto to better our relationship with the city.

With this being said, Rock of Ages, which performs in May, will be the last show in their current location. Their first and last show of the 2018-2019 season will be School House Rock Live! in Springboro at North Park. From then, until their new home is available, they will be taking the time to revamp their program. Their board and members agree that this is the perfect opportunity to properly prepare for the future of Playhouse South.

Why pause the Playhouse South program until you have moved into the new home in Springboro?

– Our members and board have decided that until our permanent space is ready, we would like to take this time to address everything our program has to offer. We’re looking at ways to grow, improve, and organize our entire program in a way that will better accommodate our new city and space.

Where will everything be stored while the move is taking place?

– Springboro has generously offered us a temporary space where we can store all our costumes, props, furniture, lumber, etc. Also, they have provided us with proper accommodations to prepare for School House Rock Live!

Are you announcing a 2018-2019 season?

– Rock of Ages, going up in May, will be our last show in our current space in Kettering. We will begin moving from this space as soon as the show closes. School House Rock Live!, performed at North Park in Springboro, will be our first and only 2018-2019 season show.

What does the new space look like?

– We cannot share many details about our new space. Nothing is set in stone as of yet, and many changes could still take place between now and the finalization of the project. We can confidently say that we have worked with the Springboro City Manager, Chris Pozzuto, to work from a “Wish List” of things that we would like our theater to include, and just about everything on that list will be worked into the space. Once everything is finalized, we will go public with more details.

Ohio has a new Poetry Out Loud (POL) state champion.

March 6, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Caroline Delaney, a senior at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School in Dayton, won Ohio’s 13th annual  POLState Finals held on March 3 at the King Arts Complex in Columbus, Ohio.

Delaney recited “Plaint in a Major Key” by Jorge Sanchez, “The American Soldier” by Philip Freneau, and “Planetarium” by Adrienne Rich.

“I found ‘Planetarium,’ and that poem … is about Caroline Herschel, who was an astronomer. Every word and every line in the poem is a reference to something about her or astronomy,” said Delaney, who plans to attend Miami University to study neuroscience on a pre-med track. “(The poem) is just really interesting and it captured my attention and it was something I could really see myself doing.”

Eleven Ohio finalists competed at the State Finals for the title of state champion following their participation in one of six regional semifinal events held throughout the state in February.

“Now in its 13th year, Ohio’s POL program once again joins with high school students and their teachers, state arts agencies, and the National Endowment for the Arts nationwide to celebrate poetry in all its forms. We know this program provides a high level of engagement for students and is one more opportunity for them to be immersed in arts education,” said Ohio Arts Council Executive Director Donna S. Collins. “We are thrilled with the commitment by Ohio’s students to POL and congratulate all who participated at the local, regional, and state levels. We now have the honor of cheering Caroline all the way to Washington, D.C., as she represents Ohio at the National Finals in April.”

As the state champion, Delaney earned a $300 prize and an all-expense-paid trip to the 2018 National Finals, held April 23-25. The national competition will feature students from every state as well as Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Washington, D.C. The total award pool is $50,000, including a $20,000 top prize for the national champion.

Delaney said she is excited to compete in the nation’s capital.

“I am just looking forward to being able to say that I represent my state and having all these people behind me,” she said. “I would like to thank my mother and my father. They’ve signed me up for acting classes, they’ve sat me down at the foot of the bed and made me recite until my brain hurt ….They’ve made sure I knew what I was doing and was confident in my own ability.”

Thanks to Delaney’s success at the State Finals, the Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School library will receive $500 to purchase poetry books.

Anna Kahle, a sophomore at Lima Central Catholic High School, earned second place at the State Finals. She received a $200 prize, as well as $200 for her school library.

Magnus Saebo, a senior at Upper Arlington High School who placed third in the competition, received a $100 prize and $100 for his school library.

All three state finalists received a framed original print created by Dayton artist Patrick Mauk. The print incorporated lines from the poem “River on Fire” by Ohio Poet Laureate Dave Lucas. Lucas, an instructor at Case Western Reserve University and author of Weather, recited three poems for the audience during State Finals.

Former State Senator Eric H. Kearney of Cincinnati, who sponsored and secured passage of legislation creating the position of Ohio Poet Laureate, emceed the event.

Delaney, who first participated in POL as a freshman, said she hopes to share her passion for poetry with her peers by emphasizing its prevalence in everyday life.

“Poetry isn’t something that a lot of kids these days really care about, but what they don’t really understand is … everybody loves music, but music is poetry and vice versa. We all have poetry in our life that we love and enjoy,” she said. “Overall, Poetry Out Loud has taught me that there is always something you can learn and that every word you say has a meaning to it. You just have to find it and convey it.”

And The Oscar Goes To…

March 4, 2018 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Tonight, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences salutes films concerning social relevance, military achievement, high stakes journalism, coming-of-age, empowering vengeance, and more at the 90th Academy Awards. Without a doubt, 2017 was a fascinating and progressive year for film, evidenced in outside-the-box pleasures from the timely horror of Get Out to the beautifully unique romance between a woman and a sea creature in The Shape of Water. Although the Academy dropped the ball in some respects (Mudbound snubbed for Best Picture remains perplexing), there are a slew of worthy nominees to root for. Expect Hollywood to bring ample attention to the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements during acceptance speeches, and let’s hope Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway get it right this time when the Best Picture is revealed. If there’s ever been a year in which you’ll want to stick around until the very end this is it.

Here are my predictions in the top six categories.

BEST PICTURE
Call Me By Your Name
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
Get Out
Lady Bird
Phantom Thread
The Post
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Overlooked: A Quiet Passion; Battle of the Sexes; Beach Rats; The Beguiled; Detroit; The Florida Project; God’s Own Country; I, Tonya; Mudbound; Patti Cake$; Wind River

Will Win: Shape of Water
Should Win: Get Out

Three Billboards and Shape of Water were captivating character-driven showcases, but Shape has the momentum to go all the way. Even so, no other nominee generated as much thought-provoking discussion across the country as Get Out.  The film was simply a cultural game-changer akin to last year’s champion Moonlight.

BEST DIRECTOR .

Paul Thomas Anderson, Phantom Thread
Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water
Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird
Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
Jordan Peele, Get Out

Overlooked: Miguel Arteta, Beatriz at Dinner; Sean Baker, The Florida Project; Kathryn Bigelow, Detroit; Sofia Coppola, The Beguiled; Terence Davis, A Quiet Passion; Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, Battle of the Sexes;; Craig Gillespie, I, Tonya; Luca Guadagnino, Call Me By Your Name; Eliza Hittman, Beach Rats; Geremy Jasper, Patti Cake$; Francis Lee, God’s Own Country; Martin McDonagh, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; Dee Rees, Mudbound; Taylor Sheridan, Wind River

Will Win/Should Win: Del Toro

Gerwig and Peele are Academy darlings, but Del Toro will triumph for his highly imaginative and fanciful depiction of love with a colorful nod to bygone Hollywood.

BEST ACTOR

Timothée Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name
Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread
Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq.

Overlooked:  Steve Carell, Battle of the Sexes; Jason Clarke, Mudbound; Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread; Harris Dickinson, Beach Rats; James Franco, The Disaster Artist; Andrew Garfield, Breathe; Jake Gylennhall, Stronger; Tom Hanks, The Post; Hugh Jackman, The Greatest Showman; James McAvoy, Split; Jeremy Renner, Wind River; Demetrius Shipp Jr., All Eyez on Me; Algee Smith, Detroit

Will Win: Oldman
Should Win: Chalamet

Oldman’s portrayal of Winston Churchill is pure Oscar bait, but 22-year-old Chalamet was truly riveting and heartbreaking as a teenager coming to terms with his sexuality. The mesmerizing final close up said it all.

BEST ACTRESS

Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
Saisore Ronan, Lady Bird
Meryl Streep, The Post

Overlooked: Annette Bening, Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool; Judi Dench, Victoria & Abdul; Salma Hayek, Beatriz at Dinner; Sally Hawkins, Maudie; Nicole Kidman, The Beguiled; Danielle Macdonald, Patti Cake$; Shirley MacLaine, The Last Word; Carey Mulligan, Mudbound; Cynthia Nixon, A Quiet Passion; Brooklynn Prince, The Florida Project; Catherine Pugh, Lady Macbeth; Emma Stone, Battle of the Sexes

Will Win/Should Win: McDormand is a sure bet for her phenomenal, applause-inducing portrayal of a mother seeking justice.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
Woody Harrelson, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water
Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World
Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Overlooked:  John Boyega, Detroit; Siddharth Dhananjay, Patti Cake$; Armie Hammer, Call Me By Your Name; Garett Hedlund, Mudbound; John Lithgow, Beatriz at Dinner; Jason Mitchell, Mudbound; Rob Morgan, Mudbound; Ray Romano, The Big Sick; Sebastian Stan, I, Tonya; Michael Stuhlbarg, Call Me By Your Name

Will Win: Rockwell
Should Win: Dafoe

Rockwell’s impeccable turn as a bigoted, closeted cop nearly stole Three Billboards from McDormand, but there were amazing subtleties and understated charm within Dafoe’s superb portrayal of a gruff yet concerned hotel manager in the underappreciated Florida Project.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Mary J. Blige, Mudbound
Allison Janney, I, Tonya
Leslie Manville, Phantom Thread
Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water

Overlooked: Hong Chau, Downsizing; Jennifer Ehle, A Quiet Passion; Bridget Everett, Patti Cake$; Beanie Feldstein, Lady Bird; Carrie Fisher, Star Wars: The Last Jedi; Danai Guaria, All Eyez on Me; Holly Hunter, The Big Sick; Laura Linney, The Dinner; Tatiana Maslany, Stronger; Julianne Nicholson, I Tonya;  Miranda Richardson, Stronger; Kristin Scott Thomas, Darkest Hour; Bria Vinaite, The Florida Project

Will Win/Should Win: Janney

Although I couldn’t help but think of Mo’Nique’s equally visceral performance in Precious, Janney’s comical and harrowing tour-de-force as Tonya Harding’s mother was a true knockout.

Luminaries of Dayton: Nan C. Kennedy

March 3, 2018 By Angie Hoschouer

Miss Kennedy was hired by the Dayton Board of Education in 1900 as a teacher for the deaf. When she died in 1935, after 34 years of teaching, the deaf school (then located at Longfellow) was named the Nan C. Kennedy School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. As a newspaper account wrote, “It was largely through her persuasion that the school board authorized the first classes for deaf and hard of hearing children in 1900. Miss Kennedy started the school with seven pupils and taught them herself for several years until the membership increased and the board gave her some assistance.” (Dayton Journal, April 19, 1935). Later, the school moved to Patterson, and it became the Patterson-Kennedy School. Though deaf education was removed elsewhere, the name remained the same until the school was demolished in May 2012.

Dayton Daily News – February 25, 1935, Pg 6, Col 4

How Many Meatballs Can You Eat?

March 2, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

If you think you can eat a lot of meatball you should sign up for Mamma DiSalvo’s 2nd annual Meatball Eating Contest.  On Thursday, March 8th at 6pm in the DiSalvo’s Party Room contestant will have 2 minutes to chow down on as many meatballs as they can. Contestants pay $10 to enter and the winner not only gets bragging rights and a $50 gift certificate to Mamma DiSalvo’s and a gift basket of Mamma’s goodies!  If you think you’ve got a wining appetite you can sign up online to compete this year!  It’s also a timely contest, since March 9th is National Meatball Day!

Last year there were 10 men (hopefully some women will sign up this year) who took on the challenge and started out with a plate of a dozen meatballs and were informed they could not use a fork or their hands to eat with.  Many of our contestants had grand ambition  thinking they  would eat 20-30 meatballs. With fans cheering the meat eaters on, Kris Mick was declared the winner eating 13 meatballs!  Kris also won the first winner of the Submarine House Super Duper Cheesesteak Challenge.

Judges for the event will include The Big Ragu from Dayton’s Food Adventure Crew and Dayton.com’s Sarah Franks.
