TEDxDayton Connect Announces Entertainment

September 30, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Tickets for the seventh annual TEDxDayton Signature Event are almost gone! TEDxDayton takes place at the Victoria Theatre in downtown Dayton on Friday, Oct. 11, 2019. Tickets cost $50 per person and can be obtained at TEDxDayton.com.

TEDxDayton’s biggest event of the year includes performances by artists, dancers, poets, and musicians from the Dayton area, and features a diverse lineup of locally connected speakers who will share their “ideas worth spreading” on topics ranging across science, education, design, technology, art, history, culture and more. To read more about the speakers for this year, click here.

The event runs from 12:15 to 5:30 p.m. Doors open at 11:45 a.m. with live music onstage by the Dayton Salsa Project. The afternoon’s program will include two intermissions with snacks and beverages provided.

Pipeshop Quartet

During the event, the Victoria Theatre stage will be graced by performances by the students of the Wright State University Dance Ensemble, led by Terri McWilliams and Gina Walthers; the musical stylings of the Pipeshop Quartet; and poetry from local teacher and spoken word artist, A.Slate. With tickets going fast, the TEDxDayton team encourages attendees not to wait and to purchase tickets today.

Ron Rollins, who co-chairs the event with John Owen and Bridget Hutt says, “Each year, we’ve brought different and varied types of performances to the day to give a fresh flavor to the event and show our audience some of the amazing talent in our midst. We’ve ranged from the dozens of voices of the World House Choir to the beats of Burundian drummers, and from pop bands to classical pianists. This year’s performers will once again bring variety, joy and a different kind of engagement to the stage. They’re part of what makes TEDxDayton special.”

Lance Salyers, who co-chairs the Speakers Committee with Cory Owen and Brenden Wynn, adds, “All change starts with an idea, and the ideas that will be shared from this year’s TEDxDayton stage promise to be thought-provoking and change-inducing. You won’t want to miss this!”

Oktoberfest Receives Record Breaking Support

September 29, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Dayton’s favorite fall festival concludes on Sunday, September 29 At the midpoint of the Dayton Art Institute’s 48th Oktoberfest celebration, the museum reports it has received record community support for the annual fundraiser. A Dayton tradition since 1972, Oktoberfest is the museum’s largest annual fundraising event, raising nearly $450,000 to support critical operations for the museum.

According to the museum, Friday’s Preview Party set attendance records, and preliminary numbers indicate record revenue for that event. On Saturday, the DAI saw more than 15,000 through the gates for the first day of the two-day festival.

“The community’s support for this event and the museum during our centennial year has been outstanding,” said Dayton Art Institute Director and CEO Michael R. Roediger. “It’s been fantastic to welcome so many people to the museum grounds this weekend–we hope to see another record crowd on Sunday as we conclude the festival. The money raised at Oktoberfest helps support museum operations and programs throughout the year.”

Oktoberfest 2019, presented by Miller Lite, continues on Sunday, September 29, from noon to 7 p.m. Oktoberfest includes a fully covered Main Stage area and Food Court, and a “TV Cave” with four big-screen TVs for all the weekend sports action. Live music will be featured in the food tent and on the main stage. Two large tents include more than 60 artisans. The ACCO Brands FamilyFest returns on Sunday, noon–4:30 p.m., with special activities for all ages in the museum and on the grounds near the museum entrance. The museum’s collection galleries, as well as the Museum Store and Leo Bistro, will be open noon–5 p.m. Admission to the museum’s collection galleries and focus exhibitions is included in Oktoberfest admission. General admission for Oktoberfest is $10 adults, $7 seniors and youth. Children 6 and under are free. Go to www.daytonartinstitute.org/oktoberfest for more information about Oktoberfest.

The DAI’s centennial celebration continues next Sunday, October 6, with Arts, Beats and Eats, a FREE community open house event taking place from noon to 7 p.m. On the museum grounds, a stage will feature live music from local bands Kick-N-Flava, Shakedown and Hey There Morgan throughout the day, alongside costumed superheroes, jugglers, an art car and outdoor games. There will also be a food truck rally, featuring Bella Sorella Pizza, Rolling Indulgence, Crème de la Crème Cakery and other food trucks, as well as a fall beer garden. Inside the museum, the Mimi and Stuart Rose Auditorium will feature live entertainment, Zoot Theater will have a puppet petting zoo–recreating the famous “Weng’s Zoo” of the 1940s–in the Hale cloister, and the Shaw Gothic Cloister will host art activities, a LEGO mural community art project, and a host of local non-profits set up with information, activities, and giveaways.

Arts, Beats, and Eats is presented with sponsorship support from the Miriam Rosenthal Foundation for the Arts, Vectren, Iddings Foundation, PNC and Frank M. Tait Foundation.

WYSO Now Independent and Community-Owned!

September 26, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

It’s official: the FCC has approved the transfer of WYSO’s broadcast license from Antioch College to a new 501c3 called Miami Valley Public Media. WYSO is now independent and community-owned!

As you may recall, MVPM took fiscal responsibility for the station and WYSO staff began managing the day-to-day finances on April 1.  Now that they have the license, they’re ready to begin the next part of our growth as your public radio station, including growing our newsroom and preparing to launch The Center for Community Voices.

With the new ownership come leadership changes as well.  Neenah Ellis will  now serve as President of WYSO and will focus much of her energy on the eventual launch of the Center for Community Voices.  Luke Dennis will serve as General Manager and oversee the daily operations of WYSO.

In a recent email Ellis shares :WYSO is in a very strong position now to grow and change quickly.  We have big plans for improving and  increasing our local programming and we’re working with our Community Advisory Board to get their input all along the way.”

One of their first steps involves growing their local news department and as a result the following positions are now open:

    • News Director
    • Morning Edition Host / Producer
    • Part-Time Spot News Reporter / Producer

35 Years of Penn Station *** $35 Gift Card Giveaway ***

September 26, 2019 By Dayton937 11 Comments

Penn Station enters 35th year & you can win a $35 gift card

Penn Station is going into their 35th year of serving up East Coast style submarine sandwiches. To celebrate, we at Food Adventures are giving away a $35 Gift Card to this regional chain, whose roots are right here in Dayton.

For your chance to win, just comment below and tell us something you love about Penn Station.  Here is a great opportunity for you to win some of those freshly grilled subs, freshly cut fries and freshly squeezed lemonade!

The Sandwich that made it all happen – Penn Station’s Philly Cheesesteak

Are you a sub lover?  Than odds are, over the last 34 years, you have made it into a Penn Station restaurant in the Miami Valley for our own Food Adventure.  Known for their flying spatulas, dicing up meat while grilling submarine sandwiches, the ordering process has evolved over the years.  One thing that has not changed, is that they serve some of the most delicious subs in town.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on PENN STATION EAST COAST SUBS:

Turkey Dagwood

Owner Jeff Osterfeld’s first started “Jeffrey’s Delicatessen” in the Dayton Mall in Dayton, Ohio.

— Jeff opened his first Penn Station in 1985 in Downtown Cincinnati.  Today there are 313 Penn Station restaurants in 15 states.

— The sub bread is cooked in-house with a signature soft inside, and crunchy outside texture.  This is perfect for holding up the sub structure with all of the hot ingredients. The bread is also delicious.

— Customers who walk in, order  in a cafeteria type line, then watch their sandwiches get cooked and/or assembled and most get a ride to get toasted in a conveyor pizza oven.  As you move down the line you are asked if you want some freshly cut fries, cookies, or drinks.

Fresh Cut Fries

— Most stores feature call ahead, drive-thru pickup windows.

Now you know what Penn Station is all about, let’s explore the best of the best on their menu…. our patented “Must Eats” section is below.

MUST EATS AT PENN STATION EAST COAST SUBS:

Chicken Teriyaki

— DAGWOOD WITH TURKEY ONLY AS THE MEAT ADD TERIYAKI SAUCE:
This first one is a super secret sandwich, not on the menu as is, but a discovery of the Big Ragu.  You order a “Dagwood with Turkey only as the meat.”  Ask them to add extra meat – it is worth the 1 to 2 bucks,  Ask then to grill it in Teriyaki sauce and ask them to the grill onions, mushrooms, and banana peppers and add provolone cheese.  After it is grilled tell them to add mayo, lettuce and tomato.  The result is an amazing “Turkey Teriyaki Cheesesteak.”  It is a Food Adventure original and the workers always compliment us on how good that sandwich looks.  Try it, it will change your life…

— THE CHEESESTEAK:

We loaded up this Philly cheesesteak

The sandwich that anchors the establishment, the Philly cheesesteak.  Get extra meat, always with this option.  May we suggest asking them to grill the onions, mushrooms and banana peppers.  Then add provolone, oregano and mayo.

Our pal and Penn Station Regional Manager Randy suggests getting the Cheesesteak with “extra meat, extra cheese, with honey mustard, Parmesan cheese and oregano.”

Artichoke Sub

— CHICKEN TERIYAKI SUB:
For those who love chicken, this sub is for you.  The chicken is cubed and not shredded like the Turkey, which is why we prefer the turkey, but this sandwich is excellent as well.  May we suggest trying it this way: Get extra meat, then ask them to the grill onions, mushrooms, and banana peppers and add provolone cheese to the teriyaki chicken “well done”.  After it is grilled tell them to add mayo, lettuce and tomato.

— THE GRILLED ARTICHOKE SUB:

Fries made to order

We had heard from many friends that this sub was great, but it took us years to try it.  Guess what?  It was shockingly good!  Artichoke Hearts mixed with grilled onions, grilled banana peppers and grilled mushrooms, covered in cheese.  It was a velvety bite in each sandwich, and tasted very close to a chicken sub. That’s the part we couldn’t figure out… why?

Lemonade – freshly made

— FRESH CUT FRIES:
It is very hard to resist the freshly cooked “cups” of fries.  Not a fan on how they serve them in cups, but hey they taste so good we soon forget.  They slice them using this wall contraption and take trays full of raw. sliced fries over to the fryer.  Served with a bit of salt, vinegar or ketchup and you are home free.  Always cooked perfectly and some of the best fries in town.

— FRESH SQUEEZED LEMONADE:
Hand squeezed daily.  For some reason, the combo of the lemonade deadening the grilled onion breath is a perfect combo.  The lemonade so cold and flavorful and free refills on a hot day is a bonus.  Heck the refills are great no matter what the weather is like outside.

Cheesesteak Extra Meat and Extra Cheese

**** NOW – who wants to win a $35 Gift Card to Penn Station and try some great East Coast Subs ? ****
To enter, just type in a comment below on one of your favorite things at Penn Station or why you should win.  The winner will be drawn at random next week.  ONE COMMENT PER PERSON or you will be disqualified.

Kickstarter live for veteran startup seeking to recycle uniforms, tell stories

September 24, 2019 By Dayton937

Will Romes is working to help fellow veterans transition to civilian life — by helping their uniforms make that same transition.

Will’s new company, Eighth Order, will take donated uniforms from retired veterans and re-pattern them into new oxford-style cotton shirts. He’s running a Kickstarter now to get the company up & running.

An Air Force veteran, Will wasn’t ready to retire at age 38.

“In military life, there are stage gates,” he explained. “Goals are easily achievable  if you follow the path laid out.”

As he looked toward retirement, he realized he didn’t have a path laid out for his post-military career. He was pondering this new reality one Sunday as he dressed for church, and his eyes wandered to the four stacks of military uniforms that he would soon be throwing away.

It seemed like a shame, he recalled. So he looked for a way to repurpose it.

He connected with a factory in California that can make eight pattered shirts out of each military uniform, But Eighth Order isn’t only about clothes — it’s also about the stories behind those uniforms, he said.

According to the Veterans Administration, between 11 and 20 percent of U.S. veterans deal with post-traumatic stress disorder. Will is one of them.

Sharing the stories behind the uniform — what countries it has traveled to, what campaigns it has seen — can help the veteran deal with the disorder, Will said.

When veterans donate their uniforms, they’ll also return a card where they share as many or as few details from their service as they wish. This card will eventually be distributed with the shirts the uniform is used to create.

Will has 45 days to go on his $20K Kickstarter goal. He hopes to launch his Eighth Order e-commerce shop in February 2020. Share this story, & click here to support him!

“Disaster” A 70’s Disaster Movie… Musical!

September 23, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Earthquakes, tidal waves, infernos and the unforgettable songs of the ’70s take center stage in Broadway’s side-splitting homage to classic disaster films.

It’s 1979, and all of New York is at the opening of a floating casino and disco. What begins as a night of boogie fever quickly changes to panic as the ship succumbs to multiple disasters.

With larger-than-life characters, snappy dialogue and ’70s, hit songs such as “Hooked On A Feeling,” “I Am Woman,” “I Will Survive,” and “Hot Stuff,” Disaster! is a hilarious tribute to the era of bell-bottoms, platform shoes and the “Hustle.”

‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’ Review – Dayton Playhouse – The Oldest Profession

September 23, 2019 By Russell Florence, Jr.

It’s easy to dismiss composer Carol Hall and librettists Larry L. King and Peter Masterson’s hit 1978 musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas as nothing but a cutesy tale of prostitution. But often overshadowed by the sight of alluring women and the sound of mattresses getting an extreme workout is a highly relevant show about empowerment, family, security, sisterhood, and second chances.

In the Dayton Playhouse’s very entertaining production fluidly directed by Brian Sharp, a big-haired, wonderfully grounded Tina McPhearson resoundingly leads the way as the resilient, no-nonsense Miss Mona Stangley, proprietor of the Chicken Ranch in Gilbert, Texas in the late 1970s. With faithful support from her trusty sidekick Jewel (delightfully sassy Pamela Byrd) and good-natured Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd (folksy Ted Eltzroth), Miss Mona and her playpen have been able to avoid catastrophic controversy. However, everything unexpectedly crumbles when fiery TV reporter Melvin P. Thorpe (energetic Ron Maurer, far removed from his reserved Tateh in the Playhouse’s Ragtime two years ago) whips the public into a religiously frenzied uproar. Despite Miss Mona’s tuneful opinion that “there’s nothing dirty goin’ on,” Thorpe vows to expose the ranch’s illegal activity, ultimately receiving help from the hopelessly flighty Governor (playful Matt Owens making the most of the silly Sidestep, a highlight of Sandra Hyde’s choreography).
Still, as chaos overwhelms, the heart of the show remains Miss Mona’s gals, an assortment of colorful women from different backgrounds, different homes and different opportunities just trying to get by while feeling protected by their surrogate mother. Kelli Myers (Shy), Adee McFarland (Angel), Shana Fishbein (Eloise), Amber Pfeifer (Taddy Jo), Alicia Walton (Dawn), Shanna Camacho (Durla), Logan Hylinski (Beatrice), Stacey Ward (Ruby Rae), and Sommer McGuire (Linda Lou) are pleasantly unified. Myers, believably evolving from naivete to confidence, and McFarland, beautifully leading the poignant Hard Candy Christmas, are noteworthy in addition to McPhearson’s quietly descriptive account of Miss Mona’s Galveston winter rendezvous late in Act 2.

Pamela Byrd (Jewel) and Tina McPhearson (Miss Mona Stangley) in the Dayton Playhouse’s production of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” (Photo by Art Fabian)

Elsewhere, Jackie Pfeifer (waitress Doatsey Mae) provides a tenderly reflective Doatsey Mae, Mark Diffenderfer (recently memorable in Dayton Theatre Guild’s The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance) brings understated authenticity to the Narrator, Sean Gunther (Senator Wingwoah), John Jeurgens (Mayor Rufus Poindexter), Malcolm Casey (CJ Scruggs), Marabeth Klejna (Announcer), and Cheryl MacGowan (Miss Wulla Jean) add greatly to the material’s humor, and there’s plenty of rowdy fun bursting within the sexually rambunctious Aggies consisting of John Carrington, Samuel Hamilton, Adonis Lemke, Sean Mayo, Ryan Petrie, Bryan Schuck, and Josh Vance. Hamilton, Schuck, Vance, and strong tenor Lemke are also notable as the Dogettes Quartet.

Ron Mauer (Melvin P. Thorpe) and the cast of the Dayton Playhouse’s production of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” (Photo by Art Fabian)

Sharp’s first-rate artistic team includes scenic designer Red Newman, costumer Teresa Kahle, wig designer Steve Burton, lighting designer Richard Lee Waldeck, sound designer Bob Kovach, and music director Ron Kindell. Violinist John Root is particularly excellent among Kindell’s orchestra during Doatsey Mae.

Surprisingly, considering the subject matter, the Playhouse offers a relatively genteel, sexually tame Whorehouse. By no means does this production ever ascend to questionable levels of gritty, carnal ecstasy in tone or characterizations, clearing allowing for a genuinely fun, worthwhile outing.

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas continues through Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Dayton Playhouse, 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave., Dayton. Act One: 80 minutes; Act Two: 40 minutes. Tickets are $20 for adults and $18 for seniors, students and military. For tickets or more information, call (937) 424-8477 or visit daytonplayhouse.com. Patrons are advised the show contains adult content, language and situations.
