Dayton Artists United: J.E. Irvin

November 17, 2019 By Dayton Artist United

J. E. Irvin grew up in Struthers, Ohio, in the industrial north area of the state. The oldest of seven children, she spent her childhood caring for her siblings and reading her way through the shelves of the local library. She completed her undergraduate BA at Ohio University, earned an M.S. in Education from the University of Dayton and an M.A. in Spanish from the University of Cincinnati. Her stories have won numerous awards and appeared in a variety of print and online publications. A career educator, Irvin taught high school for 38 years and served as adjunct faculty in Spanish at Wright State University for four years. Her interests include canoeing, gardening and travel.

DAU-First, let’s talk about your new book. The Strange Disappearance of Rose Stone, available from Amazon and other fine retailers. It must be bittersweet to finish. I mean, of course you want to tell the story, but you live you with your characters for some time. When you’ve finished a book, do you miss the characters?

JI – It’s interesting you should ask that. When I finish a book, the characters reside in me like beloved family members who show up at Thanksgiving dinner to provide an update on their lives. There are some who never come back home. Others insist there is more to tell. In the case of the protagonist from The Dark End of the Rainbow, Xandra Byrd, her story is actually just beginning. I have a series planned for her, but first I have research to do. I’m looking for a criminology student at Sinclair to inform me about the program and allow me to shadow him/her for a few days.

DAU-I know your Uncle Joe was an inspiration for a character in one of your books. You’ve also said that you never have trouble writing, that you have so many ideas. Talk about inspiration. And yes, this is a thinly disguised “where do you get your ideas” query.

JI- Sometimes my head feels like a pot of stew, all these characters bubbling around, asking for their shot at the spotlight. I keep a file of interesting news articles, lines of dialogue, titles. The most demanding ‘voice’ is the one that gets my attention. Sometimes it’s a theme that inspires me, a contemporary issue, but most of the time, it’s a what-if question that keeps me in my writer’s chair. Since I’ve transitioned from short stories to novels, many of my ideas are still waiting to be addressed. The list is so long, I’ll never finish it!

DAU-One of the things I admire about you is your involvement in your community. You are spearheading an effort to make sure local school districts have lunch funds. Can you share the impetus behind this effort?

JI-In mid-October, I saw a TV news story about a New Jersey school that was ‘lunch shaming’ students who owed lunch debts. The report left me in tears. As a teacher and a mother, I couldn’t bear the thought of children going hungry or being shamed because their parents couldn’t or wouldn’t pay the bill. I lamented this to my husband, who quite calmly told me,” Do something, Jan.” I wondered if this problem existed locally. I found out that some districts receive federal funds to provide breakfast and lunch for their students, so they may not need food assistance. But those schools may need things like socks and shoes. As I contacted the district where I live and surrounding communities, I learned that, indeed, this was a huge problem, even in those areas seen as affluent. I created a group called “Take A Kid To Lunch” and asked my social media friends to join me. We now have over fifty members, two districts have set up donation accounts, and more are being contacted. The group will remain anonymous (no actual contact with the children). Speed and efficiency is more important than tax deductions, so I didn’t set up a non-profit. Donors send what they can to the schools. It is a quick way to make sure children are not humiliated and that they get to eat. For more information, contact me at [email protected] or request to join the group Take A Kid To Lunch.

DAU- You also have an upcoming event Christmas in Springboro, November 23 and 24. You are featuring a nice group of authors there. Can you tell us about that?

JI-I believe very strongly in being a good literary citizen. One way to do that is to support and encourage local authors. Five years ago I proposed to the Springboro Area Historical Society, of which I am a member, that we hold a MEET THE AUTHORS event in the Museum during the Christmas in Springboro festival. 2019 will be the fifth such annual event. This year twelve local authors will be at the Museum Saturday, November 23, and Sunday, November 24, to meet patrons, sell and sign their books. We have authors of children’s books, paranormal romances, mysteries, memoirs. I post brief bios of the featured writers on my facebook page every few days. More visitors to the Museum increase the Society’s profile in the area, and the more people who meet the authors, the greater the fan base created. Besides, books make great holiday gifts!

DAU-In previous interviews, you’ve revealed that you’re an outdoor girl. What outdoor experiences or places would you recommend for visitors to the Dayton region?

JI-Dayton has a wealth of beautiful areas to explore. For hiking, I recommend Dayton Metroparks, all of them, and for watersports, the lakes and rivers that are part of our region’s great resources. If one is interested in a little travel, spots like Caesar’s Creek, Paint Creek, and Cowan Lake offer interesting canoe, kayak, and fishing opportunities. And Springboro has scenic, recreational, and historic trails to explore.

DAU- I’ve read that you sometimes begin your story process by asking yourself “what if?”  and that your stories often center on secrets. What if I asked you what it is about secrets that you find compelling?

JI-Secrets intrigue, confuse, bewilder, and fascinate us. Although I can’t go into detail here, a long-held secret in my own family haunts me. Those who knew the truth are now gone, but I still hypothesize about what really happened. One day I may write that story. So it is with those other what-ifs. What we don’t know is what feeds our curiosity, at times to our own peril. These are the building blocks of a good story – mystery, surprise, suspense, and romance. Every secret contains one of more of these elements.

DAU– Is there any question you always wished an interview would ask and how would you answer.

JI-I guess the questions I would most like to answer revolve around the issues raised in the books. I love a good discussion. Not all the issues I raise are resolvable in an absolute sense. Why do I use children and teens as heroic figures in my stories? Because, as a teacher, I witnessed the resilience, hope, and strength of young people, and I want to believe that their journeys, as dark as they may be, mean goodness and truth will prevail in the end.

J.E. Irvin’s first novel THE DARK END OF THE RAINBOW won the Jeremiah Healey Mystery Fiction Contest at the Key West Mystery Writers Fest. Her second novel — THE RULES OF THE GAME — was published in late 2016. Her third novel, THE STRANGE DISAPPEARANCE OF ROSE STONE, has just been released.

Win a Tour of the Esther Price Factory By Finding the Golden Ticket!

November 15, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Throughout the holiday season, customers just might find a golden ticket in their box of chocolates. Fifteen lucky customers will win the chance to tour the Esther Price factories in production on January 11, 2020 and taste the freshly-made chocolates hot off the production line. This event marks the first time the company has opened the factory doors to the public and the winners will get an exclusive behind the scenes tour.

The company has placed fifteen tickets within their one-pound boxes of mixed, milk, and dark assorted chocolates across their 8 stores. Esther Price will be releasing clues of the remaining tickets’ whereabouts to those who follow them on Instagram or Facebook. The campaign will take place November 1st, 2019 through January 11,2020 or until all tickets are claimed.

According to Esther Price’s Barbara Dressman, district manager, the company can’t wait to meet some of their fans and share the brand’s process with them. “This is just such a fun way for us to meet some of our customers and share our love for candy. We are so excited to meet the winners who find the golden tickets and take them on a chocolate tasting tour!”

To cut down on forgeries, customers will have to present the ticket at the start of the tour for entrance and are asked not to post a photo of the back of the ticket on social media. Those lucky few that find the tickets are instructed to contact the company on social media and redeem the code on the back.

Food & Flick Party Sunday Night at Engineers Club

November 15, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

“Cannonball. Cannonball coming!”

“It’s in the hole!”

“You’ll get nothing and like it.”

Expect to hear these quotes being shared Sunday night when Dayton Dinner Theater Picture Show presents Caddyshack at The Engineers Club.

Have you heard about Dayton’s newest entertainment option?  John Boucuvalas launched a new Sunday night dinner and movie event that happens every other Sunday at The Engineers Club. John spends his days contracting wedding venues and he “finds a joy in maximizing places uses.”  He explained to us the way this event works- guests purchase a ticket and 30 minutes before the film, food inspired by the movie is served party style with heavy appetizers and finger foods at several food stations, across the room and a cash bar with themed drinks.  Like a cocktail party, guests mingle amongst the bistro tables and then move to the auditorium for the film.

But unlike a regular movie theater, requiring quiet and no phones, guests are encouraged to tweet witty observations about the film, which show up to the right of the movie screen and at times they will pause the film and encourage the audience to scream out the next line of the film, keeping the evening very interactive. There is an intermission in the film, where guest can visit the bar again, enjoy some more food and desserts.

The first two films show were The Exorcist and The Godfather and Boucuvalas shares that he’s building an audience of repeat guests, who seem to enjoy dressing up in costume, inspired by the films.  Audiences are encouraged to vote to help decide which films will play in the futures.

Upcoming Movies:

Sunday November 17th:   Caddyshack

Themed Food: Various Country Club delights, Get Nothing and Like it combo platter, Floating Mini Baby Ruths, Golf Ball truffles, gumballs, rolls with lots of butter

Highlights from the DDP Annual Meeting

November 14, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

The Downtown Dayton Partnership (DDP) hosted its annual review of progress in the Special Improvement District (SID) at the Grande Hall at Liberty Tower on Wednesday, Nov. 13. Property owners, business leaders, and community partners gathered in the newly renovated Art Deco-inspired event space as DDP staff and guest speakers took to the stage to highlight progress in the urban core.

Highlights from the event included brief presentations from Lisa Wagner, executive director at Levitt Pavilion; Mark Donaghy, chief executive officer of the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority; and Paula Willis, co-owner of Now & Zen DIY Studio, a local retailer in the St. Clair Lofts. Attendees were treated to an education leadership chat with Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School President Dan Meixner and University of Dayton President Dr. Eric Spina. The evening closed with an update from downtown developers David Neal from the Windsor Companies, with the latest news from the Fire Blocks, and Jason Woodard, providing details about projects with his Woodard Development and partners at Crawford Hoying in Columbus. Shannon Isom, president and CEO of the downtown YWCA, moderated the discussion, and had her own updates to share about the $17 building renovation for residents at the women and family shelter.

From this year’s presentation, big numbers came out of the SID:

Public and private-sector investments completed and in the pipeline total about $1.81 billion.

Investments in downtown’s core have been gaining traction since 2010, with more than $700 million in projects completed and in the pipeline.

Downtown enjoys the highest occupancy rate at 97.4% despite the build boom of new housing units, with no plans for slowing down. There are 214 housing units currently under construction. The Fire Blocks apartments will soon welcome their first residents.

In 2019, 36 new businesses opened downtown. That’s a total of 1,400 new jobs in downtown’s core just since the beginning of the current SID period in 2015. First-floor tenancy has been booming with more than 97,000 square feet of vacant first-floor space filled since the launch of the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan in 2010.

The evening closed with an update from downtown developers David Neal from the Windsor Companies, with the latest news from the Fire Blocks, and Jason Woodard, providing details about projects with his Woodard Development and partners at Crawford Hoying in Columbus. Shannon Isom, president and CEO of the downtown YWCA, moderated the discussion, and had her own updates to share about the $19 building renovation for residents at the women and family shelter.

McCoy on Movies: Charlie’s Angels

November 14, 2019 By Tabari McCoy

Empowerment runs amuck over entertainment in maligned reboot of Charlie’s Angels

“Hey, what’s over there – is it the music video shoot we’re supposed to be in for the soundtrack?!” Townsend Agency agents Elena (Naomi Scott) and Sabina (Kristen Stewart) peer over into enemy territory with their newfound on-the-run client Jane (Ella Balinska) in a scene from writer/director/co-star Elizabeth Banks’ take on CHARLIE’S ANGELS. Credit: Nadja Klier © 2019 CTMG, Inc. All rights reserved.

WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska, Elizabeth Banks, Nat Faxon, Jonathan Tucker, Luis Gerardo Mendez, Sam Clafin, Djimon Hounsou and Sir Patrick StewartDIRECTOR(S): Elizabeth Banks

WEB SITE: https://www.charliesangels.movie/
THE BACK STORY: The product of a screenplay from and directed by Elizabeth Banks (who also co-stars), the 2019 version of Charlie’s Angels stars Ella Balinska as Jane Karo, a developer at an energy company owned by Alexander Brok (Sam Clafin). Her invention could help revolutionize energy as we know it, which is why her boss Peter Fleming (Nat Faxon) can’t wait to show it off despite the fatal flaw that could allow the project – codename Kalisto – to become weaponized. You see, Kalisto could be hacked to release a devastating electromagnetic pulse (EMP for short) in the wrong hands, which is why Jane wants to stop the project from going forward. Peter, however, has his own ideas and wants to get the product to market as soon as possible.

Jane, however, is about to have a bigger problem on her hands when in attempting to meet with a man named Bosley (Djimon Honsou), an assassin (Jonathan Tucker) tries to kill her. This leads to Jane meeting up with the rebellious Sabina (Kristen Stewart) and no-nonsense Elena (Naomi Scott), two female secret agents who work for the Townsend Agency – the same agency that employs Bosley … the soon-to-be-retiring Bosley (Patrick Stewart) … And the woman Jane will also come to know as Bosley (Banks).

Confused? Well, you should be – it’s about to get a lot more complicated from here. And that’s why Jane’s guardian angels are about to try to save not only her life, but the world, too.

THE REVIEW: In the era of “woke” and “cancel” culture in the wake of the #MeToo movement, one might be inclined to see Charlie’s Angels as an example of empowerment in the action comedy genre. It could be taken as an attempt to show women being just as strong, sophisticated and stylish as their male counterparts with modern women in control of their careers, their bodies and life in general. There’s just one little problem with that, however, as it pertains to the film.In the quest for empowerment, Charlie’s Angels lacks a lot in the entertaining department and nearly ends up becoming at best a caricature of what it wishes to destroy in terms of the cinematic patriarchy and at its worst, an unmemorable movie.

Now, before one accuse yours truly of a blatant case of mainsplaining, let me simply point to the film’s opening scene as an example of empowerment run amuck: Stewart’s character is literally explaining to the audience why women are underestimated, unappreciated and generally taken for granted as underachievers. This is balanced out, of course, by a male antagonist so taken with her beauty, he must then via his substandard, terribly over-the-top dialogue explain why everything she is saying is basically wrong – only of course to get his comeuppance because Stewart’s seductive agent has been setting him up. Of course the audience knows it, but the film makes sure to spell it out for them because it wants to drive home the point of the entire 80 minute-plus experience: Women can do whatever and they’re gonna do it loud, brash and however they want.

Unfortunately, as the heavy handed scene also shows, in the case of Charlie’s Angels, they’re gonna hit you over the head with it at every possible turn.

Charlie’s Angels wants to be the ultimate badass female movie: It attempts to feature Stewart as a wise-cracking rebel who’s quick with her one-liners, the Rihanna-esque Scott as a … Rihanna-esque no nonsense agent (who is by far the most believable character) and Balinska as an awkward, fish out of water just trying to do the right thing. Problem is, Stewart feels like she’s doing her best imitation a female action movie hero and it’s never believable, Balinska’s fish out of water is so out of water it’s almost like a live-action cartoon a la The Simpsons and Scott feels like she’s overcompensating for the other two. None of the three characters are really developed beyond a simple explanation (“She grew up rough!” “She’s smart” “She’s smart and nerdy and awkward!”). The timing of the sexualization of their characters comes off a bit misplaced (“Let’s infiltrate this mansion … With a fully choreographed dance routine as part of our cover!”), the fight scenes are comical when meant to be serious and just silly when they meant to be comical and the heavy-handed storytelling makes sure to guide the audience instead of letting things play out more naturally.

Complicating matters further is the fact the jokes are (1) usually forced (2) usually stale and (3) just not working. The male characters are either complete bumbling morons to the point you can’t take any of them (save for Jonathan Tucker’s heavily tattooed assassin) seriously or so sleazy they might make Harvey Weinstein wince. Charlie’s Angels may go down as Stewart’s worst performance in eons. While his Bullock character on Seth McFarlane’s now exiled to TBS cartoon American Dad! is supposed to be a buffoon, the fact this character is supposed to be taken seriously is cartoonish in and of itself.

It doesn’t make for a great viewing experience outside of its target audience: Young women who want to see young women be heroes, no matter how ridiculous the story and how over-the-top pretty much everything else in the mix may be. In trying to be empowering, it almost comes off as egregious and does the very opposite of what it wishes to do for all audiences. Just like this year’s earlier action detective reboot Shaft (which had slightly better jokes … slightly), Charlie’s Angels just isn’t memorable as much as it is missable.

As a sign of very heavy foreshadowing, the music video for the lead single from the film’s soundtrack – the inane “Don’t Call Me Angel” by polarizing pop stars Lana Del Ray, Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus – is pretty much an entire encapsulation of the project: A group of artists begging people to take them seriously by exhibiting a ton of “I don’t need your approval” attitude … While falling into every negative trope of using overly and overtly sexual grinding, lip-biting possible in a desperate attempt for approval. Don’t believe me? Check out this lyrical wizardry for yourself:”Uh, don’t call me angel when I’m a mess,
Don’t call me angel when I get undressed,
You know I, I don’t like that, boy,
Uh, I make my money, and I write the checks,
So say my name with a little respect,
All my girls successful, and you’re just our guest”

Thus, much like the aforementioned song, Charlie’s Angels whole point seems to exist for the sake of simply extending a middle finger to the cinematic patriarchy … Which would be fine if it has deeper characters (it doesn’t), an interesting, rich story (absent), or just anything that felt original, fresh and inspiring (no dice). Instead, it comes off as maligned as when Poochie was introduced on The Simpsons‘ beloved cartoon-within-a-cartoon “Itchy & Scratchy” and with similar results.
So, don’t call them angels if you like … But much like the aftermath of a bad date, there’s a good chance you shouldn’t just call, period.
OVERALL RATING (OUT OF FOUR POSSIBLE BUCKETS OF POPCORN):

  • 1 egg (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 4 ounces Fireball Whiskey
  • Cinnamon, ground (for sprinkling)
  • Red Hot Candies, crushed
Fireball Whipped Cream:
  • 1 cup whipping cream or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 ounce Fireball Whiskey

Prepare Fireball Whipped Cream and refrigerate for up to 2 hours ahead or until ready to use.

For best results, chill the bowl and whisk attachments in the refrigerator for up to 1 hour or freezer for 10 minutes. Add the whipping cream, vanilla extract, and sugar to the chilled bowl.  With an electric hand mixer or standing mixer, whisk ingredients together on high speed for about 1 to 2 minutes until medium peaks are formed.  After 1st minute stop and check to see if peaks are forming. If too soft, continue mixing at high speed in 1 minute increments, checking every minute until the peaks reach the right stiffness with soft edges. Caution – if you over whip, the whipping cream will become too stiff and grainy and then you will be making butter!  Gently stir in the Fireball whiskey and refrigerate whipped cream until ready to use.

In a medium-sized saucepan over medium-low heat, add the Mexican chocolate, honey, hot water, salt, coffee, and chile pepper.  Heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture just begins to boil; reduce heat to low and let simmer, stirring constantly, for approximately an additional 1 minute.  Carefully and slowly stir in the milk and let sit over low heat until the chocolate is too warm to touch (you can see the steam rising from it). In a medium-size bowl, beat the egg until it is frothy.  You can use an electric mixer, a Molinillo, or a fork for this.  You just need to make it as frothy as possible.  Add the vanilla extract and beat in well.  Pour the prepared hot chocolate mixture over the frothed egg and beat it vigorously for about 15 seconds.  You want to beat it until you have about 1/2- to 1-inch of foam on top. Pour 1 ounce of Fireball whiskey into each serving cup.  Gently pour in the prepared Mexican hot chocolate and stir together with whiskey to combine.  Top each hot chocolate drink with a dollop of Fireball Whipped Cream. Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon and crushed red hot candies and serve.

KAHLUA HOT CHOCOLATE

Recipe viaDamn Delicious

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Dutch-processed unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 ounce Kahlúa coffee liqueur
  • Mini marshmallows, for serving
  • Salted caramel, for serving
  • Chocolate syrup, for serving

DIRECTIONS: In a medium saucepan, combine milk, sugar, cocoa powder, cinnamon and nutmeg over medium heat until heated through, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in Kahlúa. Serve immediately, garnished with mini marshmallows, salted caramel and chocolate syrup, if desired.

Boozy Raspberry Hot Chocolate

INGREDIENTS

  • 10 ounces milk chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Chambord, to taste, plus another 1/3 cup for reducing
  • Whipped cream and raspberries, to top

Directions:  Add everything but the Chambord, whipped cream, and raspberries to a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir occasionally until the chocolate completely melts. After the chocolate melts, continue to cook, but stir more frequently. The mixture should thicken a bit and all of the chunks should dissolve. After 5-10 minutes, remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. As it cools, add 1/3 cup of Chambord to another small saucepan. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Cook for a few minutes, until the Chambord has thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon. Don’t over cook, or it will become hard like candy, rather than syrupy, which is what we want. Pour the hot chocolate into little mugs (servings should be small because it is so rich), add Chambord to your liking, and top with whipped cream. Drizzle with the Chambord reduction and top with a few raspberries. Serve.

AMARETTO HOT CHOCOLATE

Recipe via Delightfule Made

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3 c. whole milk
  • 2/3 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • pinch/grind of salt
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 oz. Amaretto Liquor (1 oz. per glass)
  • Toppings:
  • Whipped Cream/Whipped Topping
  • Slivered Almonds
  • Chocolate Shavings

DIRECTIONS: In a medium sauce pan, add the milk, chocolate chips, sugar and salt. Heat on medium low heat, whisking often. Continue to whisk until the chocolate melts completely and the mixture comes to a low simmer. (Do NOT let boil, as it will burn to the bottom of the pan.) Once liquid comes to a low simmer, promptly remove from heat. Add the vanilla and stir to combine.  Ladle the hot chocolate into 3 mugs, and add 1 oz. Amaretto liquor to each glass. Stir to combine. Top with your favorite toppings. Enjoy!

Optional toppings: whipped cream, marshmallows, shaved chocolate, pumpkin pie spice

Directions: Serves four. 1. Measure 1/3 cup of Kahlúa and set aside. 2. In a medium saucepan, whisk together 1 cup of milk, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Whisk in remaining milk until fully combined. 3. Heat mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved and very hot, but not boiling. 4. Whisk in pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice. Continue to whisk and heat mixture. 5. Turn off and move from heat just before mixture begins to boil (do not let it boil). 6. Immediately whisk in Kahlúa. 6. Pour into glasses and top with optional toppings, if desired. Serve.

Salted Caramel Vodka Hot Chocolate

Smart Mouths Love Food at Smart Aleck “Voltzy’s” + ***win $20 Gift Card***

November 12, 2019 By Dayton937

We ordered a tray of different burgers on our last trip

Many foodies in the Miami Valley know the unforgettable hamburger cooker in Moraine named Rick aka “Voltzy.” He has been through a lot in the past year health wise, but is still going strong with his Hamburger and Rootbeer Stand.

Known for his sharp tongue, and slapping ground chuck and onions with a spatula, Voltzy has become a Dayton Icon over the past 30 years.  He is the Smart Aleck that smart mouths locally have grown to love.  Take his teasing in stride.  This is his “schtick”and when he gives you grief, it means he likes you.

This month we thought we would urge our readers to visit Voltzy.  He is back open after the recent setbacks and illness and the food is still great.

Voltzy at the Grill – his natural habitat

This week he starts serving some of the best hot soups you will ever try.  Whether you have never been there, or if you are a longstanding regular, please try and stop in at least once or twice this month and get some of the best burgers in America.

To show our appreciation for you helping him out, Food Adventures is gonna give away a $20 in Voltzy food to two different foodies !

****COMMENT BELOW FOR A SHOT AT WINNING $20 WORTH OF VOLTZYS FOOD ! ****

4668 N Springboro Pike, Moraine

THE TRUE STORY OF THE BEGINNING OF VOLTZY’s:
Growing up in Ft. Wayne, Indiana he learned his burger craft from his grandfather.  Grandfather Voltzy had a small restaurant in Ft Wayne that was open 24 hours a day.  It was started in 1917 and he was extremely successful.  After Rick moved to Dayton, he wanted to get a restaurant started in honor of his grandpa.  Thirty years later he is still cookin.’

FROM TRAILER TO ROOTBEER STAND:
In 1988 he started serving burgers out of a 12 foot trailer.  It was parked outside Driftwood lanes.  The trailer grew to 16 ft then 24 ft, and in 2013 he built the Root Beer Stand on 4668 Springboro Pike.

This guy had a double hog Heidelburger and ate it all.

VOLTZY CHALLENGED WITH HEALTH ISSUES:
After a bout with diabetes he had to have 3 toes amputated over the past few years.  He is recovering and is back serving customers at his full business hours.

As always, our patented Food Adventure bullet points will give you the scoop on this Dayton Dining Legend.

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON VOLTZY’S ROOTBEER STAND TODAY:

—OPEN 11am-2PM Monday – Saturday

The sandwich that did it all – The Cheeseburger (we added ketchup behind his back)

—It is highly recommended that you call your order in – they take orders starting at 9am.

— The beef is ground fresh everyday for 31 years and when it is soup season, they are also fresh homemade everyday.

Voltzy has a huge menu – so here are our patented “Must Eats” to help you wade through the offered items.

We know because we have actually tried everything on the menu, and as always, that’s why our photos are original and not borrowed.  It sets us apart.

MUST EATS AT VOLTZYS:

— 10 CHEESEBURGERS For $12:

The 20 oz Hog Cheeseburger – they always finish it !

This is his hallmark.  Ten sliders with grilled onions, cheese and sweet heat sauce.  These are the burgers that put this man on the map.  He has the best burger in Dayton, hands down.  Why?  He grinds the meat daily and his grilling and steaming process has been perfected over the years.  Lets put it this way, his food is so good he can playfully insult people and they come back for more.  Probably our favorite burger.

— THE 20 oz HOG CHEESEBURGER:
Voltzy’s
version of a Whopper… and it puts Burger King to shame.  This HUGE burger has a big bun and is topped with grilled onions, cheese, and sweet heat sauce.  When you start eating you think, “my goodness this is the biggest hamburger I have seen..” Then it tastes so good you find yourself finishing it.  Yeah, you will surprise yourself.  If you have a big appetite, we promise this will be one of the best burgers you have ever tried.  He named this burger after his ex wife, and the double hog and triple hog burgers after his 2nd and 3rd wives !  This is our other favorite burger.

The Betty Ann

— THE BETTY ANN CHEESEBURGER:
This is like a Big Boy, however it is 3 times better.  This is a double slider generously topped with double cheese, raw onion, mayo and pickles.  We just had one of these last week and again were blown away.  One of the best burgers we have ever eaten.  The taste of the onion, pickle, mayo and his fresh ground chuck is simply fantastic.  He named this sandwich after his mother.

— CABBAGE ROLL SOUP (ONLY IN WINTER):

We are in love with his Cabbage Roll Soup

Slightly spicy, this homemade soup is an original recipe.  We noticed that he uses his freshly ground beef, and freshly steamed cabbage in this incredible broth.  Served in a Styrofoam coffee cup, we suggest you get two of them.  He sold hundreds of gallons of this soup last year.  One taste and you will see why it might be the best soup in Dayton.  Voltzy says if you try this soup, you will wake up singing the song “Touch Me in the Morning.” Whatever the hell that means.

Inside the Slammer Wrap

— THE SLAMMER WRAP:
Large burger with ham, sweet heat sauce, horsey sauce, grilled onions, and melted cheese inside a wrap.  Good item if you are on the go and dont want a gooey mess.  Unmistakable Voltzy beef taste and those wonderful condiments, make this a “must eat.”  Remember if you vary from the ingredients on any menu item, he will give you grief, but he will eventually cave in.

— THE PHILLY CHEESESTEAK:
Philly meat with peppers, onions and horsey sauce on a sub bun with cheese on top.  An overstuffed, finger licking good sandwich, that will knock your socks off.  This gooey, cheesey hot mess is not recognizable as a philly cheesesteak.  You gotta just grab it and go in like you are storming a castle !

— THE PATTY MELT:

Patty Melt

Another popular choice at Voltzys.  Its a burger on a Rye bread with onions and melted cheese.  He usually doctors it up with a little sweet heat and horsey sauce.  We have a lot of friends that swear by this sandwich.

— THE HEIDELBURGER:
A larger Double Cheeseburger with egg and bacon on the sandwich. This one is very popular and is a nice meal in itself.   Add a bottle of Frostie Root Beer and you are in heaven.

This is a Double Hog HeidelBurger usually it is just double cheeseburger meat

It would also be heavenly to win a $20 gift card to Voltzys….

**** COMMENT BELOW on WHY YOU COULD USE A $20 GIFT CARD TO VOLTZYS and WE WILL PICK 2 WINNERS AT RANDOM, NEXT WEEK **** ONE ENTRY PER PERSON

Even if you don’t win the gift cards, make sure you stop in and visit Voltzy.  May we recommend you wash down all your favorite foods with Frostie Top Bottles of Root beer?  He has them cold on site.  His crinkle cut fries and onion rings are also favorites.

Bottle of Root beer and 10 cheeseburgers

Remember during the winter he has soups and the entry is in the lobby with no tables or seating (to go only).  But in the summer and warmer months, he opens the patio for picnic table seating.  It is a great place to people watch and observe Voltzy harassing his guests.

Thank you for reading our weekly Food Adventure article.  We are featured right here on Dayton Most Metro, every week with an EXCLUSIVE article.  We try and visit the best places in Dayton and share our favorites.  No rules here !
