Do you have what it takes to be on Jeopardy?

January 20, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

First, you must take and pass the Jeopardy! Test. If you pass the test and meet the minimum eligibility requirements, you will be placed into a random selection process for an invitation to an audition. Assuming you perform well at the audition, you will be placed into the contestant pool and could be invited to compete up to 18 months from your audition date. Making it to an audition is not a guarantee of being invited to compete on the show.

Applicants must meet the following requirements to meet basic eligibility:

  • Must be over 18 (except for the Teen Tournament and College Championship).
  • For the Teen Tournament, must be between the ages of 13 and 17 at the time of taping.
  • College Championship applicants must be full-time undergraduates with no previous bachelor’s degrees.
  • Must not have appeared on any version of the show with Alex Trebek.
  • Within the last five years, must not have been employed by or related to, or have known anyone who works for Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., Sony Pictures Television Inc., Quadra Productions, Inc., CBS Television Distribution, Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy! prize suppliers, or any TV station (including advertisers and related radio stations) broadcasting Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy!

The Jeopardy! Test is the primary entry point for anyone who wants to compete on Jeopardy! It allows fans to qualify for an audition by taking the 50-question Jeopardy! test at a convenient time, using their home or work computer.

Three-day testing events to qualify for our regular shows are offered to adults one to two times per year. You may take the test on any day that is convenient, but only once per event. Multiple entries could result in disqualification.

Next Testing:

January 28 2020, 5:00PM PT
January 29 2020, 6:00PM PT
January 30 2020, 8:00PM PT
If you have a disability and require assistance to complete the test, you may have a family member, friend or assistant read the clues to you and/or type in your responses. Please note that print-to-speech software and/or voice recognition programs might not allow you to answer quickly enough. If you are selected for an audition, our contestant coordinators will work with you on any necessary accommodations.
There is no fee to take any of the tests. If you are invited to participate in an in-person audition, all costs (including, but not limited to, accommodations, meals, transportation and parking) must come at your own expense.
Once you’ve taken the test, your MyJeopardy! account will be updated and within an hour of completing the test you will receive an email confirming your test has been received. Other than that, you will not need to do anything (although self-congratulation is also completely appropriate). If your scores qualify you, you will be placed in the pool for random selection for an in-person audition. If not, remember many of our greatest champions took the test multiple times before being invited to compete.

Dayton at Work and Play: Kendell Thompson – Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park

January 20, 2020 By Bill Franz

Kendell Thompson, superintendent of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park in the world’s first airplane factory. It’s off West Third Street, in Dayton’s Arlington Heights neighborhood.

It’s amazing to me that these buildings are still here. The Wright Brothers built them in 1910 and 1911 to put what they’d learned about flying to commercial use. Orville Wright sold the business in 1915, after the death of his brother, but airplanes continued to be made here.

In World War I the Dayton Wright Company was formed by Charles Kettering and William Deeds, with Orville Wright as a consultant. They built thousands of planes for the war effort in these buildings and two other locations.

General Motors bought the Dayton Wright Company in 1921 but they didn’t stay in the airplane business. Instead, they made steering wheels here. The business was so successful that GM formed a new division – the Inland Manufacturing Division. This plant grew to cover 54 acres with 1.2 million square feet of manufacturing space. Fortunately, the original Wright buildings were not torn down during this period. They were just surrounded by larger, newer buildings.

The magic of glass never ceases to amaze me: the challenge of creating an intricate glass piece; the delicate balance of heating and cooling at different times and stages; the planning and teamwork required for success. It all comes together into an intense moment from which either fine art or floor shards are created.”

I often use images of microbes, plants, animals, bones, and water to tell the story of the way we change and evolve. JESSECA YNEZ SIMMONS

Opportunity: Travel to New York City and Los Angeles to conduct on-camera interviews with four crucial interview subjects for “We Will Not Turn To Stone”–a feature-length hybrid documentary that re-conceptualizes Medusa, one of the most infamous mythic females of all time, through a non-patriarchal lens. About the Artist: Jesseca Ynez Simmons is a documentary filmmaker and has a special interest in hybridization. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Media Production at the University of Dayton and a Sustainability Scholar for the Hanley Sustainability Institute.

Artist Statement: “I create documentaries that explore the superimposed realm of reality and fantasy; what one experiences with both open and closed eyes. By letting the explicit factual and imaginative qualities of a story graze on the same plane, it is possible to gain something more than if they were treated separately. I aspire to push these boundaries by letting narrative and experimental techniques of cinema bleed into my documentary films.”

‘In the Heights’ Review – Muse Machine – This Is America

January 17, 2020 By Russell Florence, Jr.

Recognizing and respecting other cultures is what truly makes America great. Don’t believe me? Check out Muse Machine’s exhilaratingly joyful production of In the Heights, a wonderfully touching, relatable, topical, and tuneful look at the Hispanic experience in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood.
The winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 36th annual Muse student musical, In the Heights, written by Pulitzer Prize winners Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) and Quiara Alegría Hudes (Water by the Spoonful), excellently examines love, fear, financial woes, disillusionment, regret, and hope within a small yet busy block of close-knit family and friends. Dominican Republic native and bodega/convenience store owner Usnavi (Nate Saner), holding down the fort with his cousin Sonny (Chavin Medina) while caring for his Abuela Claudia (Gabby Casto), is the central focal point, propelling the immigrant narrative forward in humorous and insightful ways. Elsewhere, cab company owners Kevin and Camila Rosario (Michael Taylor and Sara LiBrandi) have difficulty coming to terms with the news that their beloved daughter Nina (Julie Murphy) hasn’t adjusted to life at Stanford University. Beautician Daniela (Courtney Collinsworth), Daniela’s assistants Vanessa (Charlotte Kunesh) and Carla (Chynia Crane), Kevin and Camila’s faithful employee and Nina’s love interest Benny (Desmond Kingston), Piragua Guy (Nick Bradley), and Graffiti Pete (Quinn Bennett) along with his trusty sidekick Pete (Darian Watson) also accent the colorful action, occurring over an eventful Fourth of July weekend in 2008.

The cast of Muse Machine’s production of “In the Heights” performs “Carnaval del Barrio.” (Photo by Ben Morrison)

Under the breezy, thoughtful co-direction of Jeffrey Polk and longtime Muse choreographer Lula Elzy, the winning principal cast and large ensemble supply strong, witty and mature performances. In a striking Muse debut, the charismatic, sensitive Saner delivers a breakthrough portrayal grounded in authority, vulnerability and a specific mastery of Miranda’s hip-hop lyrics in a manner that would make Jay-Z, Kanye West and Twista very proud. Medina, a standout in past seasons with Dare to Defy Productions and Epiphany Lutheran Church, is back in top form yet refreshingly stretching his gifted abilities in a looser fashion to believably interpret Sonny’s street-savvy swag. The endearingly earnest Castro powerfully renders Pacienca y Fe (Patience and Faith), a signature flashback detailing Abuela Claudia’s thought-provoking account of her Cuban immigrant past. Taylor, a memorable Curly in Carroll High School’s Oklahoma! last year, and LiBrandi, whose remarkable 2018 portrayal of Dolly Levi has already gone down in Muse history, are credibly concerned and compatible. LiBrandi especially ignites Act 2 with a fierce rendition of Enough, which finds Camila caught in the middle of the stubbornness between her husband and daughter. Murphy, a tender Laurie in the Human Race Theatre Company’s 2018 production of Brighton Beach Memoirs, and Kingston, seen as Sam in last year’s Muse production of Mamma Mia! offer pleasant vocals, particularly Murphy’s heartrending Everything I Know and their lovely duet When You’re Home. Kunesh, an outstanding Sophie in Mamma Mia!, absolutely dazzles vocally (It Won’t Be Long Now is an early highlight), choreographically (The Club) and in costume (her snazzy collection of Project Runway-esque day and evening wear are courtesy of Nikki Sherck and Alisa Vukasinovich). Collinsworth, receiving fine support from the appropriately ditzy and enjoyably strut-happy Crane, is as delightfully sassy here as she was last year as Tanya in Mamma Mia! Bradley, a vibrant, athletic tenor, brings sunny optimism to the cheery Piragua.

Courtney Collinsworth (center as Daniela) leads “Carnaval del Barrio” with Desmond Kingston (far left as Benny) and Chynia Crane (far right as Carla) in Muse Machine’s production of “In the Heights.” (Photo by Ben Morrison)

Additionally, Elzy unsurprisingly pulls out the stops as a hip-hop and Latin-infused storyteller. Along with the aforementioned Pacienca y Fe, in which she injects dramatic 1940s scorn into Abuela Claudia’s memories of perseverance, and The Club, a fantastic, character-conscious routine soaring with lively thrills on the level of The Dance At The Gym from West Side Story, her spirited creations of 96,000 and Carnaval del Barrio are flavorful testaments to her diverse expertise in fluidity, movement and rising momentum. In fact, the particularly electrifying, flag-adorning Carnaval del Barrio contains a cavalcade of eye-catching moments, including some cool hip-hop moves performed on the upstage stoop.

The top-notch production team includes producer Douglas Merk (securing the original set design by Anna Louizos), musical director Jeffrey Powell (conducting an impressive 15-piece orchestra), lighting designer John Rensel (bringing beautiful awe to a series of fireworks during Blackout) sound designer Ryan Vallo, property master/rehearsal stage manager Shannon Sellars, production stage manager Morgan Jergens, and artistic consultants G. Armando Silva, Joe Deer, Tyson Randolph, and Lynda Casto.

Nate Saner (center as Usnavi) with Chavin Medina (Sonny) and the cast of Muse Machine’s production of “In the Heights.” (Photo by Ben Morrison)

You will not find this In the Heights ethnically accurate in terms of overall casting. However, the relevancy of its themes, its universal reflections of family, community, legacy, goodwill, and cultural pride wrapped inside the common pursuit of the American Dream, remain terrific hallmarks genuinely stirring the soul.

In the Heights continues through Sunday, Jan. 19 at the Victoria Theatre, 138 N. Main St., Dayton. Performances are 8 p.m. today, 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Dayton’s 2020 Fish Fry Guide

January 17, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

This weekend marks the official beginning of Fish Fry Season in Dayton!

Dayton came by its fish fry tradition many years ago.  Many of the European settlers who flocked to the Gem City  and many of those immigrants were Catholic, and the tradition of foregoing the consumption of meat on Fridays made the fish fry a natural evolution.

The fish fry tradition developed even further during the Prohibition era, when fish fries became a way for former alcohol-purveying establishments to stay in business. Many went so far as to conceal their illicit speakeasies beneath the intoxicating aroma of frying fish, offering free or low-cost fish to those who imbibed.

As time moved forward, fish fries became an easy way to avoid meat while enjoying a night out and eating affordably. The tradition grew from there, providing Dayton families an opportunity to go out to dinner without breaking the bank.

Many places in town have fish fries and after much searching, asking and eating, here are some of the best places in the city to catch a fish fry. You’ll also notice Fish Frys aren’t just on Friday anymore!

And, as always, if we’ve forgotten your favorite, please share it with others by posting a comment below or emailing us.

McCoy on Movies: Bad Boys for Life

January 16, 2020 By Tabari McCoy

Lawrence, Smith reunite for entertaining nostalgia in Bad Boys for Life

“Over here, partner – I think I see the dude who convinced me to do Gemini Man! Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) proceed with caution in a scene from co-directors Adil & Bilall’s addition to the Bad Boys franchise, BAD BOYS FOR LIFE. Credit: Ben Rothstein ™ 2019 CTMG, Inc. All rights reserved.

WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Joe Pantoliano, Paola Nuñez, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Charles Melton, Nicky Jam, Jacob Scipio and Kate del CastilloDIRECTOR(S): Adil & Bilall

WEB SITE: https://www.sonypictures.com/movies/badboysforlife
THE BACK STORY: Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) has never needed the money. He has that thanks to his inheritance. He’s also apparently never needed love; sure he’s had “love” but nothing like what his partner Marcus Burnet (Martin Lawrence) and their always embattled leader, Captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano), have in their lives. Sure, he had a thing with Rita (Paola Nuñez) in the past, but that’s in the past.

So, when his partner to make good on his threat to retire upon becoming a grandfather, Mike makes a bet with Marcus and wins – only he doesn’t get the chance to collect on that bet due to a ghost from his past: Isabel Aretas (Kate del Castillo), a.k.a. the Witch. It seems Isabel has an old score to settle with Mike from a very long time ago and has no problem using her willing son Armando (Jacob Scipio) to collect the debt.

Now, as the body count starts piling up, Mike is going to need Marcus, Rita, Captain Howard and all the help he can get if he’s going to survive.

THE REVIEW: One key component of HBO’s acclaimed Watchmen television series revolved around the idea of one of the main characters being able to experience another a person’s memories via the ingestion of a pill dubbed “Nostalgia.” And while they had an adverse affect on Regina King’s character at first, they ultimately led to revelations that eventually proven to be essential to her and the overall ending of the first (and only?) season of the series.Watching Bad Boys for Life, one might have a similar take – for while the beginning of the film may start off a tad slower and/or more mundane than one might expect, once it gets going, all the fond memories fans of the first two films had will come quickly back to life.

Whereas the first two films relied inordinately upon the chemistry between Smith and Lawrence to carry them in Michael Bay’s explosion-filled paradise, Bad Boys for Life adds small bits of nuance to the mix to dive deeper into Smith’s and Lawrence’s characters personal lives. Smith’s rockstar cowboy realizes he’s fading into the twilight if he doesn’t change his ways in a way that doesn’t feel terribly contrived, all while Lawrence, Pantoliano and the film’s supporting players add strong punches of humor into the mix. (It’s kind of what last year’s already forgotten Shaft movie was hoping for but didn’t quite get right.) The ideas of growing old and growing up are at dual play in the film, Lawrence and Smith luckily handle both with enough flair and finesse to not make the film too dry or too frivolous for its own good.

Of course, the nostalgia of watching 90s comedy icons Smith and Lawrence is likely going to be more than enough for most audiences as the duo hasn’t any of their timing. Likewise, the action sequences under the eye of co-directors Adil & Bilall have all the usual buddy cop/action comedy panache you’d expect yet feel more fresh than familiarly overblown (for the most part). Throw in some strong female representation from Hudgens, Nuñez and del Castillo and the film has the entertainment value to make casual and die-hard fans happy.

If nothing else, Inner Circle will be just as pleased to take home all those residual checks for his best known song once again.

January 16, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Chefs from five restaurants all located in Dayton’s historic Oregon District will share their culinary skills in “cook and dine” classes in the 38th annual AFS (American Field Service) Cooking School. Proceeds from the annual cooking school benefit the Dayton area team of AFS Intercultural Programs’ high school student exchanges. This year a portion of the money raised will go to The Dayton Foundation’s Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund.

The 2020 cooking series offers a sampling of the Oregon District’s diverse array of cuisine and dining options. The five cooking classes and dinners will be held from 6:30 to 9:00 pm, Mondays, February 3rd to March 9th in the Consumer Science room at Centerville High School, 500 E. The 2020 classes are scheduled as follows:

Chef Liz Valenti

Feb. 3:  Chef Liz Valenti of Wheat Penny Oven and Bar reflects her Italian-American background growing up in Chicago and culinary training in California. The Wheat Penny menu includes a variety of entrees and pizza made with dough containing starter from a 100-year old Italian bakery in Chicago, handmade pastas served in traditional and contemporary styles, flavorful vegetable dishes, cheeses and ice creams made in-house daily.

Casey and Patrick are graduates of the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, NY and have extensive teaching and fine-dining experience at several Michelin starred restaurants, most recently serving as co-executive chefs at Spoonbar restaurant in Healdsburg, CA.

March 2:  Chef Melissa Deaton of Dublin Pub offering distinguished Gastropub Irish fare, with a fusion of European & American influences. Chef Melissa writes and executes the renowned menus for the Pub’s monthly, four-course, themed dinner events.

Family owned for over 40 years, Jay’s features a wide variety of fresh seafood and steaks prepared with traditional and creative methods as well as house made salad dressings and desserts.

According to volunteer Eileen Baker “the AFS Cooking School’s volunteer staff gratefully appreciates not only the talent and generous participating chefs and restaurateurs, but also the support, cooperation and community spirit of the many fine Oregon District restaurants in helping to organize the 2020 classes.”

All classes combine culinary demonstrations by the chefs with hands-on participation by each student in groups of four with individualized chef supervision. Classes are casual, fun and informative. Each evening’s class includes chef demonstration and class preparation of a 3-course meal.  Chefs and their restaurants provide an amuse bouche as well as all the food for the evening. Each evening concludes with a sit-down dinner that students helped prepare, complete with fresh flowers, colorful table linens and specialty roast coffee. These classes WILL sell out, so reserve quickly!

The cost is $55 per person, per class. Classes are limited to 20 students. Each evening’s class includes chef demonstration and class preparation of a 3-course meal.

New Improv Class Starts Sunday

January 16, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Ever though about doing improv comedy?  Well here’s your chance.  Comedian Karen Jaffe will be leading a Short Form Improv class starting this Sunday from noon -2pm.  This eight week course will end with a final public performance in late March/early April – date tba.

It is an adult class, with a minimum age requirement of 16. The ideal student is someone who wants to learn how to be “in the moment” more. You don’t need to be funny, in fact it’s mostly about learning how to listen and be on a team. According to Karen, “This class is not as much about acting like other classes can be. This is more about communication and interpersonal skills, but it happens to be really fun.”

Short Form means short fun games or exercises that last about 2 to 5 minutes, such as a group doing a collective task (like building a machine with each performer becoming one of the parts) or playing scenes with specific conditions imposed (such as starting every sentence with a particular letter). Performers are encouraged to use their  spontaneity and overcome shyness. The performers often start with a prompt, making up the story as they go along. Although they improvise, the process draws on time-honored principles—the first among them being “yes, and.” Simply put, “yes, and” means performers accept whatever their scene partners do or say as part of the reality of the scene and then build on it with their own contributions. They must be present in the moment, listening carefully, and contributing freely. These skills turn out to be particularly useful in workplaces that rely on adaptability. The television show Whose Line Is It Anyway? is short form improv.

Your instructor, Karen Jaffe, has been making people laugh since the age of six, when she punched an actor from Sesame Street LIVE in a rather sensitive area in front of a theater full of people. However, she didn’t think about making people laugh on purpose until she studied improv at The Second City Conservatory in Chicago. After Chicago, she moved back to her hometown of Dayton, Ohio and tried stand up for the first time. An unnamed number of years later, she is still doing stand up in clubs and venues all over the US and Canada, and she teaches improvisational comedy to stand up comics. Her podcast, “Everybody Dies,” is available on Facebook.

How To Attend:

Wiley’s Comedy Club
101 Pine Street in the Oregon District

8 week class, $100
Sunday 12-2, Jan 19 – March 8

Plan on showing up about 15 minutes early to register prior to the first class.

And the Oscar goes to….A White Man.

January 15, 2020 By Joshua Stucky

The Year of the Woman. The Decade of Color. The Wave of Change. Ummmm….well…not to be a JOKER, but what gives in Hollywood? By now you have heard the outcry of ‘White Male Oscar Party!’ The New York Times has an excellent article all about it. What does it really mean? And as the debate rages about the Relevance of the Academy Awards today, (check into NPR), it leaves us all a little perplexed. If our movies reflect our society, is something wrong with the movies? Society? Perception? Probably the latter…we have been down this road many, many times before.

Think about this….in acting categories alone, there have been 1200 to 1500 nominations since the awards got their start….and, wait for it, to date, less than 80 winners have been of color.

And then the dreadful Greta Gerwig snub for ‘Little Women.’ The movie garnered 6 nominations…but no director, because evidently, it just happened on its own.

Before I press forward, let me state, I’m not a film critic, I did take film appreciation. I’m not an acting expert, I’ve been in plenty of plays. I’m not one to see every film, I do love Netflix. What I am is the very person that Hollywood wants to reach! The average movie-goer hoping to be entertained and even educated from time to time.

This time, Hollywood needs the education. We are in a precarious time in this country. Women are at a true crossroads, politically and socially. People of color are under-represented and their voices lost in others’ misleading tweets.

So who do we look to? The Movies! To celebrate the underdogs. To make more movies about those people who need to be seen, heard and understood. And then, when those films are made, we need Hollywood to buoy them, praise them and bring them accolades that prove ‘all types of us matter.’ If not Hollywood. WHO?

Which brings us to our very own Julia Reichert! Let’s hear it for the GIRL! I know we are all giddy with excitement thinking that one of our own can take home an OSCAR and she’s a woman….W O M A N! (Shout out to Steve Bognar, who we love too, but this is about her right now!) And if ever there was a lady who girls can look up to and see their potential, it’s Julia!

What does all of this mean…the outrage, the disappointment, the white male party on Sunday, February 9th….I think it means this….

Pray that Hollywood picks the BEST of what they have deemed the best. Let’s hope they see, hear and understand what the world is saying! (And secretly, root for Cynthia Erivo in HARRIET…much like the lady she portrayed, maybe she can show the world that we are all part of the party!!)

The Oscars will air LIVE SUNDAY FEBRUARY 9 8e|5p on ABC and will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide…where there are a multitude of races, genders, and sexual preferences!
