Restaurants Offering Carry Out & Delivery

March 16, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

The best thing we can all do for our community’s restaurant owners and staff is to order take-out from whatever restaurant you would have normally planned on dining out at. This will be a working document, which we will continue to update as we hear from local restaurants. I’ve added links to menu’s when provided. If you have info to add, please email to [email protected]. Thanks!
??Be patient and expect there to be issues and mistakes – most dine-in restaurants are only used to doing one or a few carry-out orders at a time.
?If you have condiments, silverware, napkins, etc. at home then do the restaurant a favor and tell them you don’t need those things. It will help.
?And TIP the person ringing up your order like you normally would dining in. Carry-tips are normally 10-15% but I suggest 20-25% during this shut-down. I’m sure most places will be pooling those tips to distribute to the rest of staff who will be needing all the help they can get.

Schools Closed- Resources For Home Teaching and Education

March 15, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Schools around the country are being closed to try to slow down the spreading of COVID-19, by reducing how often large groups of people are together. At first, this may sound exciting to many children and families, though these closings also present us with lots of challenges.  Below are some tips from Nationwide Children’s Hospital:

Give Yourself A Minute

You are likely trying to figure out many concerns in your life including childcare, entertainment, finances and work-related needs. Allow yourself time to process with a helpful family member, friend or co-worker to figure out what steps you need to take. Children will notice if we are stressed and upset, so it can help to work through our own emotions when they are not present.

Acknowledge the Disappointment

Many children are going to be missing events they have been looking forward to such as plays, dances, field trips and spring breaks. These events are a big part of kids’ social structure and they may feel angry, worried or sad. Be sure to allow your child to have their natural emotional experience. Try using words that join them in their feelings (e.g., “I’m so sorry this is happening. I’m disappointed I won’t get to hear your choir sing, too”). Sometimes we can try to jump too quickly to feeling better, but it is OK for your child to talk about their reactions. To help them process this by allowing them to have some alone time, write a letter about how they feel, or talk about the things they will miss.

Moving Forward

After your child has expressed their struggle, work to help them find their own coping strategies. Ask your child to identify some benefits of staying home or activities they are looking forward to doing. Talking about balance is important: there are things that are frustrating/disappointing and some things that are exciting. You may want to remind your child this is temporary and that soon things will be back to normal. Children may also tell you what helps them cope, such as music, activity or journaling. By being more active and engaged during the day, such as coloring, building things or exercising, there is less time to continue to think about the disappointments.

Making a New Normal

To help move forward, have your children participate in making the “new normal” for the next few weeks. Sit down together and make a new structure for home-based days. This can be setting mealtimes, schoolwork time and different fun activities and crafts for morning and afternoon.  Check with our school district to see how they will be facilitating lesson plans.

Here are some resources to help you survive:

150+ EDUCATIONAL SHOWS ON NETFLIX

Parents can c

lean the house while kids learn, right from the couch. The number of educational shows on Netflix is growing everyday! Not to mention the benefits Netflix has added to homeschoolers who learn best visually.

Let me tell you a little secret to keeping the kids on task:

Create a separate profile on Netflix. Name it “School” and add ONLY educational materials to this profile.

A great starting point is to add our “100 best Educational Shows to Stream on Netflix” list. Then when you need to keep the kids busy, allow them to watch only shows you have added to this account. It works great and keeps the kids from getting sidetracked by the show they’re currently binge-watching.

Local Restaurants Offering To-GO Meals For Guest Reluctant To Dine In

March 14, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

As the COVID-19 (coronavirus) continues to make headlines, even the best-laid plans are up for last-minute changes. Those changes are hitting restaurants hard as they struggle with the effects of reduced travel and government calls to avoid large gatherings.  One local restaurateur we talked with today said he’s lost $25,000 in catering cancellations in just the last couple of days.  So many of the service industry jobs are hourly employees, sent home if business doesn’t dictate the need.

Open Table sent out an email today saying they are seeing sharp declines in  across online reservations, phone reservations, and walk-ins. In the United States and United Kingdom, they see a 20 percent reduction in total seated diners vs. last year.  At the city level, diners are down approximately 45 percent in Seattle, 40 percent in San Francisco, 30 percent in New York, and 25 percent in London, Los Angeles, and Chicago. (All declines cited here are on a year-over-year basis.)

Locally many restaurants are scrambling to react to the market, many offering curbside meals:

More from Open Table’s Andrea Johnston, Chief Operating Officer:

To support the restaurants we all love, we’d like to share a few simple things you can do to help your favorite restaurants weather this storm:

  1. If you have a change of plans, please let the restaurant know as soon as possible so they can plan accordingly. Even cancelling the same day is better than not showing up.
  2. Order take-out or delivery. It gives the restaurant business and keeps you well fed. Many restaurants that don’t usually offer these options are making exceptions.
  3. Re-book for a future date—it will give everyone something to look forward to.
  4. Consider purchasing restaurant gift cards if they’re offered.
  5. Tip generously if you can afford it. Tipped workers are some of the first to suffer in times of economic distress.

12 Famous Museums Offer Virtual Tours

Going into a self-quarantine can have many complex issues and complications beyond having enough food and supplies for two weeks. In terms of entertainment, it also probably means you’re in for a lot of boredom, a lot of Netflix, and a lot of browsing the internet.

But there is a way to get a little culture and education while you’re confined to your home. According to Fast Company, Google Arts & Culture teamed up with over 500 museums and galleries around the world to bring anyone and everyone virtual tours and online exhibits of some of the most famous museums around the world..

The next few weeks are going to be a challenge. It’s going to be hard on kids being away from school. It’s going to be a challenge and huge change for working parents, and even the caregivers home with these little ones during the day – unsure what’s safe to participate in during the break.

McHarper Manor Free Art Tutorials

Beginning next week, our studio will be going live daily with free art & craft tutorials to create at home with your kids! We’ll have shopping lists (with links to the supplies you can order from Amazon) to have on-hand to complete the projects with us! We hope this helps the parents, grandparents, nannies, and in home providers to still have something fun to do with these little guys, and something exciting to look forward to during a time that can be quite overwhelming for kids. Art is therapy, friends! And if there was ever a time for it, it’s now!

Eat at Local Restaurants

Coronavirus is not known to be transmitted through food, but hard surfaces – utensils, menus, salt and pepper shakers, condiments, door handles, tables – can be contaminated by droplets. So, throughout your meal, each time you touch something –the menu while ordering or the ketchup bottle when loading up your burger – avoid touching your face or eating until you wash your hands or rub them with hand sanitizer. Taking precautions, you can continue to dine out with fairly minimal risk, say health departments officials.

But that recommendation does not apply to people in high-risk groups who are being advised by the CDC to avoid crowds.  Older people and those with underlying conditions in areas where the virus is spreading should take steps to keep their distance from others and stay home as much as possible.

Is delivery less risky than dining out?

The short answer is yes. The CDC is advising people at high risk in outbreak areas to have food brought to the house by family members, friends or delivery services.

A number of services including Grub Hub and DoorDash are letting customers request that deliveries be left on the doorstep to limit exposure even more.  “The restaurant industry is really prepared for this. Because of influenza, norovirus, hepatitis A and other viruses, they spend a lot of time thinking about this in the restaurant industry,” Chapman says. “A lot of thought has been put into regulations and operating procedures,” says Larry Lynch, senior vice president of certification and operations for the National Restaurant Association.

Shop Local

As more and more people choose to stay at home (with their money) during the coronavirus outbreak, supporting some of the community’s most vulnerable small businesses will allow them to  remain open and keep their employees working.

Buy a gift card
“As a promise to return to support them, purchase gift cards to your favorite local shops and restaurants. This puts money in the pocket of your favorite storeowner today to help them cover operating expenses and to help assure a strong tomorrow.”

Shop online – Many retailers have online shops. Use this time to check out their online offerings.  Some shops that don’t offer online shopping are happy to take an order over the phone and have it delivered to you during this time – so don’t hesitate to ask!”

UpDayton Call For Community Input on Needs Assessment

March 12, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

UpDayton, an organization known as a launchpad for volunteer-powered community projects, is looking to determine how the organization could best serve the Dayton community. As part of this strategic planning process, UpDayton is launching a survey to collect input from the community and organizational stakeholders. If you’d like to provide your input, you can take the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QRPL273

Some of the core considerations for UpDayton over the coming year include: defining community needs that UpDayton is equipped to address, funding for the organization’s administrative costs, and sustainable transitions. UpDayton’s current director, Lauren White, will transition from her director position to a project support staff role, solely working with the 2019 summit project winners, effective March 13, 2020.  Lauren’s achievements as director include launching the UpDayton Incubator Program and improving organizational processes, as well as defining possibilities for the organization’s future.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to support such passionate, community change-makers in my capacity as director,” said Lauren White. “One thing is for sure, there’s a whole lot more happening in Dayton than in 2008 when UpDayton began, and that’s something we can all celebrate.”

UpDayton’s focus has gradually shifted over time as the issues Dayton faces, and the awareness around them, have evolved.

“In the early years of UpDayton, Summit winning projects included things like mural painting, highlighting points of interest and walkability in Downtown Dayton, and creating Dayton bucket lists. While they contributed positively to the city, we’ve seen a shift in the last four years, with winning projects geared towards tremendous social impact and change,” said Jason Benning, UpDayton board chair.

In response to the community’s interests, UpDayton recently has focused on grassroots projects that create social change. The Longest Table, held over 10 meals, inviting over 2,000 Daytonians to not only break bread with each other, but also break down racial and economic divides.  The Reading Park Project focused on eliminating book deserts along the Salem Avenue Corridor. Participatory Defense provides people facing charges, their families, and their communities with a deeper understanding of the justice process, and assists them in preparing for meetings with their attorney, court dates, etc.

Daytonians of today seem to feel more empowered than ever, and have more tools and programs at their disposal. Dayton is now home to new co-op programs, a growing start-up community, and new incubator programs.

With all of these changes in mind, UpDayton is re-evaluating how it fits into the Dayton community. One thing that has remained constant is that UpDayton provides a platform for anyone to share their idea to make Dayton a better place.

McCoy on Movies: Wendy

March 10, 2020 By Tabari McCoy

Peter Pan and friends endure a terribly boring
and uninteresting adventure in Wendy

Titular character Wendy (Devin France) and Peter Pan (Yashua Mack) prepare to fly in a scene from director Behn Zeitlin’s imaginative re-envisioning of J.M. Barrie’s story about children who never grow up in WENDY. Credit: Photo courtesy of Searchlight Pictures © 2020 Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. All rights reserved.

WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Devin France, Yashua Mack, Gage Naquin, Gavin Naquin, Ahmad Cage, Krzysztof Meyn, Romryi Ross and Shay WalkerDIRECTOR(S): Behn Zeitlin

WEB SITE: https://www.searchlightpictures.com/wendy/
THE BACK STORY: A wildly different take on previous Peter Pan productions, Wendy stars Devin France as the titular character. Wendy, along with her two brothers Douglas and James (played by real life brothers Gage and Gavin Naquin), is a young child who we are first introduced to inside of the greasy spoon where their mother (Shay Walker) works. When the trio of siblings were younger, their friend Thomas (Krzysztof Meyn) went off on a train and was never seen again.

Curious as to what happened, Wendy and her brothers one night sneak off when the train reappears. That is how they meet a young boy named Peter (Yashua Mack) who leads them on a journey to a mysterious island where children never age – as long as they believe in the island and “Mother,” a glowing whale-like sea creature that serves as the heart and soul of the island. The children enjoy their stay at the beginning, playing from sunrise to sunset … But they have no idea what awaits them as their extended stay turns into a life-changing experience, provided Wendy can get her family home once again.

THE REVIEW: In contention for both the most imaginative and worst movie of 2020 thus far, Wendy is at best wild and weird and at worst boring and grandiose. How can you take a classic for most and, at the very least, extremely familiar, story and turn it into a nearly 2 hour epic with no audience? Well, if you’re co-writer and director Behn Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild), you (1) take a children’s tale and make it geared towards an adult audience as you (2) have underperforming young actors recite (3) inane dialogue whilst (4) telling your story at an extremely methodical pace (5) too slow for children and too (6) plodding for adults. The movie is an art house take on a classic children’s story that is too artistic for anyone to be as entertained as the is it by itself.

While some will praise (or at the very least, commend) Zeitlin for his progressive thinking in his casting, a Caribbean Peter Pan with a distinct patois is something you’ll either be on board with or not. Likewise, the Pan character as portrayed in Wendy is both aloof and self-absorbed and less a compelling figure as much as he is a necessary conduit to arrive at various story points. (And not to criticize a child’s acting, but given that this is a critique, there are times Mack does not seem like the best choice for Zeitlin’s vision.)

Likewise, the older actors feel like last-minute replacements in their limited roles that match their limited acting skills. In addition, the new “mother” figure in the film – a deep sea creature that serves as the heart of the mythical island that Peter literally calls Mother – is a terrible metaphor for childhood/innocence and a lousy replacement for the role Wendy has in Barrie’s work. There are several plot discrepancies tied to the creature, which is a lot like the movie itself: An interesting but hodgepodge albatross that underdeveloped and misrepresentative of whatever it is supposed to represent.

Given the nearly decrepit pace the story moves at – coupled with the odd camera choices – Mack is the least of the film’s problems. Whereas Wendy aims to be ambitious, it often comes off as forced, odd for the sake of odd and at worst, completely non-compelling. It simply exists for its own sake with payoffs coming off so heavy-handed there is no inherent intrigue other than seeing how it ends.

These are all the reasons that Wendy is better off, like the Lost Boys themselves, staying missing from your movie viewing queue.

OVERALL RATING (OUT OF FOUR POSSIBLE BUCKETS OF POPCORN):

Victoria Theatre Association, and Ticket Center Stage are now DAYTON LIVE!

March 10, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

In a major event for the Dayton Arts Community theVictoria Theatre Association’s President and CEO, Ty Sutton, and the VTA Board of Trustees hosted an Open House Event this evening announcing a new name and brand for the organization (Dayton Live) and new website, (DaytonLive.org) as well as the 2020-2021 Premier Health Broadway in Dayton season.  By placing Dayton in our name, we are reinforcing that Dayton is a regional arts and entertainment destination for southwest Ohio and beyond.

“Dayton Live evokes the energy of live events while boldly declaring that our thriving downtown community is the region’s home for arts, culture and entertainment,” said Sutton. “After months of research and conversation with our audience, we found our brand didn’t really reflect the many activities we promote or venues we operate as an organization. Dayton Live is a vibrant brand under which all of our venues and community partners will be able to grow.”

President and CEO, Ty Sutton

Our commitment to these venues and the arts in Dayton is stronger than ever. The historic Victoria Theatre will always be at the heart of who we are and why we exist. We are honoring that legacy, and we are not changing the venue names.

MISSION:  The mission of Dayton Live is to strengthen community engagement in the arts through inspiring performances, educational opportunities, and world-class venues.

VISION: Dayton Live elevates a thriving downtown experience as the primary host and presenter for performing arts in the region.

“The most significant part of this rebranding process is the launch of a new website that marries the former TicketCenterStage.com ticketing website with VictoriaTheatre.com,” continued Sutton. “Ticket buyers are now able to easily search DaytonLive.org by performance name, presenting organization, art form, or date. As a result, they will quickly discover all the fabulous live arts and entertainment experiences and education programs available at the Schuster Center, Victoria Theatre, PNC Arts Annex, and The Loft Theatre – all on one website. You can now select seats with the view from seat functionality, make donations to any of the presenting organizations represented, exchange subscription seats, or even add seats – all on DaytonLive.org – 24/7 on your mobile phone, tablet, or desktop computer.”

Dayton at Work and Play: Charlie Campbell

March 9, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Walking the halls of Front Street on a weekday morning, and things are fairly quiet. The art galleries are closed and the artists are working in their studios. Then I follow the sound of accordion music and find Charlie Campbell. Charlie and his wife recently sold their Oakwood home and moved to a downtown apartment. He’s using a small space at Front Street as an accordion practice area.

Years ago, when I had my first solo exhibition in Dayton, Charlie played his accordion at the opening. People probably enjoyed Charlie’s personality and his music more than they enjoyed my photos. I visited Charlie at Front Street to thank him because he’s doing the same thing again. Charlie will play the accordion at the opening of “In The Neighborhood” featuring my photos from 66 Dayton neighborhoods and Doug Fiely’s paintings inspired by scenes from Dayton’s neighborhoods. The show opens at K12 Gallery and TEJAS (341 South Jefferson) Thursday, April 2, 6:30 to 8:30.

Many of you know Charlie as one of Dayton’s biggest boosters. Each week he sends his online newsletter “It’s Great in Dayton” to more than 7,000 people. If you’d like to get the newsletter, go to http://www.greatdayton.com/

Take the RTA Survey!

March 9, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The Greater Dayton RTA wants to connect with its customers to hear their views on service. The agency is seeking input through an online survey administered by the American Bus Benchmarking Group (ABBG). The survey period begins March 9, and remains open through April 5. Those who participate will be entered for a chance to win prizes, including free rides for a year on the RTA.

As a member, ABBG provides RTA a forum to engage with other mid-sized bus organizations in America to learn from each other by comparing performance, sharing experiences, and identifying best practices. RTA partners with the ABBG and its customer satisfaction survey to see how it compares to other transit agencies around the country and to find new ways to improve its customer experience.

“The ABBG customer satisfaction survey gives our customers a chance to tell us what we are doing well and point out areas where we could improve,” said Brandon Policicchio, Chief Customer and Business Development Officer for the RTA. “We rely on the survey results to fine tune our services and offer the best possible experience for members of our community.”

The survey is available online at iriderta.org/survey starting March 9, and is available in three languages: English, Spanish, and Chinese. All community members who utilize RTA’s fixed-route services are encouraged to take the survey. As an incentive, the RTA will randomly award a 31-Day pass to one participant each week during the survey period, along with one grand prize award of free rides for an entire year at the survey’s conclusion.

Remarkable Jazz Duo Returns to The Brightside!

March 8, 2020 By LIbby Ballengee

I run into lots of folks who have been missing the jazz offerings at Gilly’s, or the listening room vibe at Canal Street Tavern. At The Brightside Music & Event Venue, we are hosting an upcoming performance that is just for those missing those powerful, intimate performances. Jennifer Hartswick & Nicholas Cassarino Duo, are a  truly remarkable jazz duo that you don’t want to miss!

The Brightside is thrilled to host this duo, who are back after popular demand! Last year they moved our audience to tears with their powerful jazz-fusion originals featuring Jennifer’s beautiful voice and trumpet accompaniment, along with Nick’s masterful, and even sexy, guitar work. Blues guitarist Steven Gregory, kicks off this exclusive performance.  He wowed local audiences during the recent Dayton Battle of the Bands, earning himself a spot in the finals.

Jennifer’s live performances are renowned as spontaneous, joyful and contagious. Her natural charisma and sincerity shines through, and each performance is a celebration of musical collaboration. And whether she is wailing on the trumpet or singing an intimate vocal solo, her performance is all part of a single seamless instrument, one that is played not only with astounding technical proficiency, but also with sensitivity, conviction and heart. Hartswick is an original member of the Trey Anastasio Band and has recorded/shared the stage with Herbie Hancock, Phish, Christian McBride, Tom Petty, Aaron Neville, Carlos Santana, The Rolling Stones, Big Gigantic, Dave Matthews and countless others.

Nicholas Cassarino was born in Vermont into a musical family. He started singing publicly at age 5 and at age 11 began playing guitar. Through the genres of punk rock, classic rock, and folk he began studying jazz. The doors of jazz opened him up to classical, gospel, soul, hip-hop, funk, and music from around the world. In 2013 he formed his current touring outfit The Nth Power with Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce) and Nate Edgar (John Browns Body). They have been touring nationally and internationally since 2014 and have released an ep, full length studio album, live album, and will release a new studio album in the fall of 2018.
