‘Tip Jar’ virtual concert raises funds for hospitality workers

May 29, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

On Saturday, May 30th, Dayton musicians come together in a virtual concert called ‘Tip Jar: A Show of Thanks’ to raise funds for Dayton’s hospitality workers.

The idea stemmed from the staff of Tender Mercy, the chic new underground bar that opened right as the coronavirus shutdown was happening. The team wanted to help fellow workers who are struggling financially from lack of income.

Led by co-owner Chris Dimmick, the team partnered with the Dayton Foundation and the Ohio Restaurant Association to set up a special fund for Montgomery and Greene County workers.

Dimmick and team also partnered with three local production companies to film the pre-produced show: Ambient Productions, Sound Valley Dayton, and Venus Child Productions. The filming occurred over 3 days and 4 locations: The Brightside, Ned Peppers, Tender Mercy, and Toxic Brewery. Fourteen local acts took to stages in empty rooms to film their favorite songs.

Peruvian Street Food Makes Up the Menu at Fino Sur

May 28, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

The husband and wife team behind FINO SUR were both born in Lima Peru.  They came to Dayton 15 years ago and have been working in restaurants over the years, while catering Peruvian food for friends and parties.  Last September they participated in The Heritage Festival and after success there, decided to open a restaurant  featuring the foods they loved to make.

The goal was to open the new restaurant in Centerville, OH early March 2020 and bring delicious Peruvian dishes and culture to the city. Unfortunately, the covid-19 crisis delayed our opening but they are finally ready to serve you.

Learn more about the food they serve:

How would you describe Peruvian cuisine?
Peruvian cuisine as we know it today is a product of miscegenation that occurs in Peru. First The arrival of the Europeans with the discovery of America and the conquest. Then they come to migration from different parts of the world. This is how Africans, Chinese, Italians, Japanese, Jews, and Arabs arrive. This mixture of cultures and races was given in the homes of Peru. Immigrants begin to cook the products they find in the new continent using their techniques. This is the case, for example, that the Lomo saltado is born, pieces of meat sauteed with onion, tomato, yellow pepper, tools such as the wok and the technique of the Chinese immigrants that giving it a few turns and the wrapping in the flames creates an exquisite dish like this. What does anticuchos mean?
The name of anticuchos derives from the Quechua words “Anti”: an eastern region of the Andes and Kuchu: cut. They are popular and inexpensive meat dishes that originated in the Andes during the pre-Columbian era specifically in the Antisuyu region of the Tahuantinsuyo (Inca Empire). The most popular anticucho is that of the heart of beef and you find it in the streets of Lima as well as in restaurants.
Why is one of the most popular sauces of Peruvian food called Huancaina sauce?

The most popular sauce of Peruvian cuisine takes its name in tribute to the city of Huancayo in the Mantaro river valley in the Junin region. The creator of the recipe bought the potato in this region and named it in honor of the city of Huancayo “Papa a la Huancayo-Huancaina”.

What is Rocoto?

Rocoto is a hot pepper. Its name has its origins in Quechua “luqutu” o “rukutu” is found mainly in Peru and Bolivia. Rocoto is a hot pepper that dates back to pre-Inca times. For those that like spicy food we are making a spice sauce to accompany your food.

What is Chimichurri sauce?

A sauce that has origin in South America in the countryside of Argentina and Uruguay. It is made of finely chopped parsley, minced garlic, oregano, olive oil, and red wine vinegar. Exist different recipes that add other ingredients to those already mentioned. Chimichurri is used as a condiment for grilled meat.

What is Golf Sauce?

It is a South American cold sauce a base of tomato sauce, mayonnaise and other ingredients. According to the legend, it was invented by Nobel laureate Luis Federico Leloir in the mids 1920s at a golf club at the seaside resort Mar del Plata.

What is Chalaca sauce?

It is a sauce that accompanies one of the most popular dishes of Chalaco origin, called “Choros a la Chalaca” (the native people of the region of the port of Callao are called Chalacos). This dish consists of cooked Choros (a mollusk from the mussels family) accompanied by this sauce consisting of diced onion, squared tomatoes, boiled corn kernels, coriander, and lime juice.

What is Criolla sauce?

Criolla sauce It is the sauce consisting of red onion in julienne cut, chopped yellow pepper, chopped cilantro, and lime juice, which is a classic accompaniment in different dishes of Peruvian cuisine.

Why are there products that Peruvian cuisine uses that we don’t know?

When Europeans arrive in America a kind of natural exchange begins, they carry a basket of products that spread them in Europe and the world for example: the potato that was a native product of Peru and was universalized now you find a variety of potato in any part of the world. There are many Peruvian products that were left to say in some way hidden in the Peruvian mountains and were not used for many centuries since the Spaniards replaced some products of the Andean diet with cereals until recent times that we have begun to explore and spread its benefits, an example of one of these products is Quinoa.

How many varieties of potatoes exist in Peru?

In Peru, there are more than 5,000 varieties of potatoes. Peru is considered Globally as the first country in potato biodiversity. Only in the region of Cuzco, there are more than 1,500 varieties of potatoes and it is within Peru the region with the greatest diversity of native potatoes.

Is Peruvian food spicy?

Peruvian food uses a variety of species and ajies native to the region to season the food. Some dishes are spicy and others are not. That depends on the taste of each person but I think in general we make dishes with a moderate level of spicy.

How many varieties of chili pepper exist in Peru?

In Peru, there are more than 350 varieties of ajies and many more varieties to explore in some regions of Peru. Among the best known and used varieties are yellow pepper, rocoto, aji panca, aji limo, aji mirasol is a sun-dried pepper, aji mochero, etc.

What type of side dishes accompanies Peruvian food?

The dishes of Peruvian food are served with potatoes, cassava, corn, rice, sweet potatoes, fried plantains, and pasta. These fittings vary according to the different regions.

What has been the phenomenon that has turned Peruvian cuisine into one of the most prestigious kitchens in the World?

For more or less 25 years, a movement originated by a group of Peruvian chefs began, some who returned from Europe and other parts of the world and others who studied in Peru leaders who left their pride and vanities aside and began to talk about how to rescue old recipes, improve those that had and joined together to develop new ideas and different projects. Thus, in 2008, the MISTURA International Gastronomic Fair of Lima opened for the first time not only for cooking but for culture, tradition, and diversity. In addition, the Pachacutec cooking school is created in Ventanilla, subsidized by the arzobispado del Callao, for low-income people and with foreign donations, such as a library brought from Spain and the help of renowned Peruvian chefs. This school was created to give opportunities to low-income children and use gastronomy as a social weapon and transform lives and create opportunities for young entrepreneurs. It is so that today there are thousands of restaurants not only in Peru but also in the most important cities in the world, all this has turned Peru as a tourist destination and culinary destination.

Day Air Credit Union Provides Meals to First Responders in Dayton During COVID-19

May 28, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

As part of an ongoing response during the COVID-19 pandemic, Day Air Credit Union has provided more than $7,500 in meals to first responders. Day Air provided lunch and dinner to first responders serving in Kettering, Centerville, Washington Township, Vandalia, Beavercreek, Butler Township, at the University of Dayton, and on the VA Campus.

“We’re pleased to be able to show our appreciation to those who protect and serve our communities during these uncertain times,” said Bill Burke, President and CEO. “Our approach during the COVID-19 pandemic is to ensure the well-being of our associates and members, without the help of first responders this would not be possible.”

Day Air worked with local restaurants and food trucks including Beavercreek Pizza Dive, Submarine House and Claybourne Grill to provide meals to respective police and fire departments. All three restaurants were eager to assist Day Air in providing this token of appreciation to first responders, and even added complementary desserts to go with the meals.

In addition to providing meals to first responders, Day Air is providing a number of relief programs for their members throughout the community impacted by COVID-19. These programs include: a Here to Help Loan, temporarily waiving certain fees, suspending foreclosures and auto repossessions, PPP Loans, Skip-A-Pay programs, and more. For the latest information on how Day Air is supporting associates, members and the community through the COVID-19 situation, please visit dayair.org/covd.

2nd Street Market to reopen this Saturday

May 28, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Five Rivers MetroParks’ 2nd Street Market will reopen outdoors on a much smaller scale this Saturday, May 30, so the public can buy fresh produce, meat and dairy from local farmers. The Market is located at 600 E. Second St. in downtown Dayton.

Until further notice, the Market will be open only on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. Shopping from 10 to 10:30 a.m. is reserved for vulnerable populations — those who have compromised immune systems and/or are age 65 and older.

Shoppers will need to plan ahead, as a number of precautions will be in place to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The outdoor-only Market can accommodate a limited number of vendors. Most vendors will be set up outdoors on the south side of the Market building. One dairy and one meat vendor will be set up outdoors on the northwest side of the building. The Market’s prepared food and artisan vendors have not yet reopened.

All shoppers must enter at the east end of the Market’s south parking lot and exit at the west end. A limited number of people will be allowed inside the shopping area at a time, so visitors may have to wait in line — while maintaining social distancing and wearing face coverings — before they can shop. Signage and volunteers will help guide shoppers.

The limited hours and other changes have been made to protect the health and safety of Market shoppers, vendors, staff and volunteers during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Shoppers are asked to review an online Shoppers’ Oath before visiting the Market, which asks them to do such things as stay home if they’re sick or have been in contact with someone who’s sick. Other precautions and changes mean visitors should expect a shopping experience that’s very different from that of previous summers at the Market:

  • Social distancing of at least six feet must be maintained at all times.
  • Shoppers are asked to purchase their items and move along so that others may do the same, as well as to prepare a list to expedite shopping.
  • Shoppers are asked to designate one person per household to visit the Market.
  • Shoppers will not be allowed to touch products, but instead must ask vendors for what they’d like to buy.
  • Shoppers cannot use their own bags.
  • Dogs are not permitted other than service animals.
  • Restrooms and water fountains are not available, and shoppers will not have access to the interior of the Market building.

In addition, all shoppers will be required to wear face coverings that cover their mouth and nose to protect the health and safety of the Market’s staff, vendors and volunteers, as well as their own health and safety. A vendor will be located at the entrance selling face coverings. Exceptions will be made only for those who cannot wear a face covering due to health conditions.

Those who would like to shop from local farmers but would prefer to do so online can access links to Market vendors’ websites and social media pages at metroparks.org/localfood.

Even with the necessary precautions, Five Rivers MetroParks felt it was important to reopen the Market in the largest capacity possible at this time to give the community access to fresh, local food — especially as more people are protecting their health in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“While MetroParks is asking visitors to change how they shop, what hasn’t changed is the ever-growing need to provide equitable access to fresh, local produce,” 2nd Street Market Manager Lynda Suda said. “The Market is one of only a few locations where people can shop for fresh food in the downtown area. With areas identified as food deserts just a short distance away, we have to take food equity and accessibility very seriously.”

Many 2nd Street Market vendors offer EBT/SNAP benefits and Produce Perks matching benefits — which still will be available to customers. Tokens are available from Homefull’s EBT/SNAP Exchange, temporarily located near the entrance of the outdoor market, to shop at participating Market vendors. These benefits are offered thanks to a partnership between Five Rivers MetroParks and Homefull.

The reopening also is important because 2nd Street Market helps Five Rivers MetroParks meet its conservation mission and serve as the region’s conservation leader by providing the community with access to local food, which is less taxing on the environment and often healthier.

In early May, Five Rivers MetroParks and Homefull were recognized with an Outstanding Support Organization award from the National Association of County Park and Recreation Professionals for their partnership allowing more equitable access to fresh food. The Ohio Parks and Recreation Association also awarded the partnership an Award of Excellence in early 2020.

For the most up-to-date information about the 2nd Street Market, visit the Market’sFacebook page or metroparks.org/localfood. Visitors also can call 937-228-2088 or email[email protected].

2nd Street Market shoppers and Five Rivers MetroParks visitors should always follow theCDC’s recommendations, particularly for social distancing and wearing face coverings, while spending time outdoors. For the most current information on MetroParks’ COVID-19 response and related closures, visit metroparks.org/covid-19 and follow Five Rivers MetroParks on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The Latest From The Neon: Peter Sellers, Diana Kennedy, Killer Whales & Gift Cards!

May 27, 2020 By Jonathan McNeal

Our selections have been really well received over the last few weeks.  DRIVEWAYS continues to get great responses, our followers have told us that FRENCH SHORTS 2020 are wonderful, and Sherry told us that MILITARY WIVES“was the perfect Memorial Day film, or any day film. It is a film that reminds me that being human is a complex, painful, joyful journey.  I feel more human for watching.” That’s quite an endorsement!  All of these films will stick around for another week!  But we’re also going to keep moving.  Today, we’re bringing two new documentaries, and both are rated “100% Fresh” on rottentomatoes.  THE GHOST OF PETER SELLERS is about the disastrous making of the film GHOST OF THE NOONDAY SUN, and DIANA KENNEDY: NOTHING FANCY will be a delight for foodies and lovers of travel alike.  Lastly, on Friday, we’ll virtually open the fantastic documentary BLACKFISH – where you’ll be able to write in questions for a live Q&A next week.
(Don’t forget – Tonight, Wednesday, May 27 at 8pm, is the Q&A for the Roger Ebert documentary LIFE ITSELF!)
Synopsis for THE GHOST OF PETER SELLERS: “In September 1973 Peter  Sellers  embarked on the production of a 17th Century pirate comedy in Cyprus  for Columbia Pictures (GHOST OF THE NOONDAY SUN). Sellers  lost  confidence  with the film as soon as it began and desperately tried to sabotage it, firing the producers in the first week and then setting his sights on his friend the director, Peter Medak. At its core lies the story of an unraveling  production but also the tale of a young director firmly on a path to greatness. Medak had made 3 back-to-back successes; most notably THE RULING CLASS in 1972 with Peter O’Toole (nominated for the Palm D’Or). This film changed his career forever. After 43 years the wounds have barely healed for Medak and this is his opportunity to tell the story and finally release the weight associated with its failure. THE GHOST OF PETER SELLERS is a comic-tragic feature doc about what it takes to be a film director and survive your biggest disaster.” This film will be available on computers and mobile devices as well as Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast.  Here’s a LINK to a help page where you can learn more. Click on the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access to this film for $10.
Synopsis for DIANA KENNEDY: NOTHING FANCY: “An intimate, candid perspective into the curious world of 95-year-old cookbook author and British ex-patriot Diana Kennedy, widely regarded as the world’s academic expert on
Mexican cuisine. Standing barely five feet tall with a thick English accent, Diana is a formidable critic of anyone who doesn’t agree with her views on Mexican culinary traditions, or, God forbid, doesn’t recycle. The author of nine acclaimed cookbooks, Diana has spent nearly seventy years exploring Mexico (typically solo in her truck), and researching the country’s varied and complex cuisines. A two-time James Beard Award winner, Diana was decorated with an Order of the Aztec Eagle from the Mexican government in 1982 and became a Member of the Order of
the British Empire from the UK in 2002. Despite her notable achievements, Diana is difficult to categorize; often referred to as the ‘Julia Child of Mexico.’ Given her edgier style, however, Diana prefers a different title: ‘The Mick Jagger of
Mexican Cuisine.'” This film is available to watch on your computer or mobile devices and via and app with supported Apple and android TVs. More technicals details can be found on this LINK. You can watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access to this film will for $9.99 by clicking the image below.
These selections are sticking around:
NEW FRENCH SHORTS 2020 Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 5 day access to this collection of films for $12.
MILITARY WIVES Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access for $4.99.
DRIVEWAYS Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access for $12.  This will be the final week for DRIVEWAYS!
MAGNOLIA PICTURES: A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE DOCS is already underway, and you’ve been invited to ask questions to the directors.  Each Friday, we start a virtual engagement of a great documentary for just $5.00 each.  On the following Wednesday, you can attend a live virtual Q&A with the film’s director – and you can submit your own questions in advance. (You can either submit them over email to [email protected], or they can tweet at Magnolia by using the hashtag #magnoliadocseries.)  This Friday marks the third film in the series, BLACKFISH…and you can still rent the first two:
RBG started on May 15.
LIFE ITSELF started May 22. (Q&A tonight, 5/27, with Chaz Ebert in conversation with director Steve James)
BLACKFISH starts May 29. (Q&A on 6/3 with director Gabriela Cowperthwaite)
HAIL SATAN? starts June 5. (Q&A on 6/10 with director Penny Lane in conversation with Lucien Greaves, head of The Satanic Temple.)
When you purchase access to each film for $5, you will also get invited to that film’s Q&A event and 10% of all the national sales will go to a charity of the filmmaker’s choice.
Due to the uncertainty of the coming weeks/months, the DAYTON JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL has decided to go mostly virtual this June instead of postponing or canceling…and the preview event on June 2 is right around the corner. Though we’ll certainly miss hosting this fantastic festival at THE NEON, we think they’ve made a wise decision!! Check out their awesome line-up by clicking the image below!  It’s their 20th anniversary, and they’re making all the screenings and on-line discussions FREE!!
Wanna know what’s coming down the road? (Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.) On June 3, we will virtually open the Oscar nominated film CORPUS CHRISTI. Also on June 3, we’ll start the beautiful political thriller from a director I greatly admire – Agnieszka Holand. MR. JONES is set during the early 1930’s and stars James Norton, Vanessa Kirby and Peter Sarsgaard. On June 12, we will open the documentary FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO – Daniel Karslake’s follow-up to his film FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO. And sometime in late June, we hope to open THE TOBACCONIST – a film I saw and loved at The Cleveland International Film Festival last year.  We’re working to make this a sidebar or encore to the Dayton Jewish Film Festival…and you’ll be invited to participate in a post-screening discussion with yours truly.
Last week, we participated in a gift card program with The Downtown Dayton Partnership…you could buy $25 gift cards for a number of businesses downtown and they would send you a bonus $15 gift card for a mystery business.  I wanted to let you know all about it, but the program was so successful that they sold out of $15,000 of free $15 gift cards in one day.  Due to some generous folks in the region, it looks like they may be announcing “Round 2” pretty soon.  Stay tuned to their Facebook Page for the latest details.

Round 2-Downtown Dayton Gift Card Bonus Buy Program

May 27, 2020 By Dayton937

As part of relief efforts to help downtown businesses navigate new operational constraints, the Downtown Dayton Partnership (DDP) has launched the Downtown Dayton Gift Card Bonus Buy program, offering customers an incentive to support the small businesses community in downtown Dayton. This first round, launched last week sold out in 6 hours.

For every $25 gift card purchased through the program, the DDP will include an additional $15 bonus gift card (up to a maximum of 4 bonus cards per household) to spend at another downtown business. The site will go live today at noon, Thursday, May 28.

“We know this has been an exceptionally tough year for our businesses, and want to do everything we can to support them through this trying time,” said DDP President Sandra K. Gudorf. “For every gift card purchase made, that money will go directly back to our downtown businesses.”

This gift card purchase bonus campaign is a way to leverage the public’s support of their favorite participating downtown businesses while helping support and promote additional downtown businesses. The DDP has set up an online ordering system where customers select which participating business they’d like to purchase a $25 gift card from. With each gift card selection, the DDP will offer a bonus $15 gift card to a surprise downtown business, up to a maximum of 4 bonus gift cards per household. All gift cards will be mailed to customers within 30 days of purchase.

More than 60 downtown businesses, including restaurants, coffee shops, salons, retailers, bars, and arts and entertainment venues are participating in the program. Gift cards can be purchased at www.DowntownDayton.org/BonusBuy starting today. The number of available bonus buy gift cards is limited, and the program will continue until the fund is exhausted.

“We have seen the tremendous support the Dayton community has already given to their favorite downtown establishments, and we hope our gift card bonus buy program will be another way patrons can show restaurants, bars, salons, and retail shops even more love,” Gudorf said. “The $15 bonus gift card will encourage downtown enthusiasts to explore new businesses, which further supports our mission at the DDP to promote our downtown in creative ways.”

Those who wish to make bulk (more than four) gift card purchases, or companies that would like to donate to support the gift card bonus buy program should contact Laura Woeste at [email protected] or call 937-224-1518 ext. 229.

Centerville Avenue of Flags

May 21, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Over the last couple of days, you may have noticed flags going up all around Centerville. According to their website, “The Noon Optimist Club of Centerville is a fellowship of people who get things done.” And there is no greater visual example of their work than the display of flags put on display on  Memorial Day Weekend, Flag Day June 14th, 4th of July, Labor Day Weekend and Veteran’s Day November 11th.

This patriotic community service program is called The Avenue of Flags and it’s a  Fundraiser that allows them to support youth programs and youth scholarships in the community.

Because of the situation we are currently facing, and in response to Governor DeWine’s request to fly flags around Ohio, the Optimists will have a special extended display this year. These flags will remain up through the July 4th holiday, before returning for Labor and Veterans Day.

Here’s how to works:

  • For an annual subscription of $50, the Optimists will place a 3′ by 5′ high quality American flag on a 10′ flag pole typically within 15″ of the curb in front of your home or business on the five holidays mentioned above
  • They deliver and place your flag prior to the holiday and we retrieve it after the holiday. They are responsible for replacement of any flag and they store the flags between holidays.
  •  If you wish to display more than one flag at a single address, you can save $10 on each flag. Between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day, click subscribe on-line or contact us for prorated pricing and multi-flag discounts.

If you are interested in a new flag subscription for this year, please visit our website for more details, https://centervillenoonoptimist.com/avenue-of-flags/

(Subscriptions received within 10 days prior to a flag holiday are not guaranteed delivery until the next holiday.)

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery Introduces Camp in a Box

May 21, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery presents an exciting new camp program that bridges the gap for parents and teachers interested in helping youngsters learn in these challenging times.

Camp is an experience that allows children to explore topics that interest them, interact with others that also share those interests, and allows them to be kids and have fun!

The Museum’s Education Department organized a new, compelling summer enrichment program—Camp in a Box!

Camp in a Box is offered in two formats for a week of science investigations that are completed at home. The Basic Kit provides the materials and directions needed to allow a camper to work at their own pace independently, without the need of a computer.

“Our museum has been increasing the depth of our content and
our ability to deliver quality audio/visual experiences over the
past year. We are well positioned to ramp up quickly to be able to serve more children and families during this time,” acknowledged Dayton Society of Natural History President and CEO, Tracey Tomme.”

The Digital Kit includes everything in the Basic Kit, as well as a live interaction with an instructor, other campers that are enrolled, and special experiences tailored to their camp theme. It also includes field trips, behind the scenes adventures, and other opportunities of learning and discovery each day. All this is completed through their computer’s webcam. Camp in a Box can be shipped directly to your home, or can be picked up from the Museum.

“I believe the need for distance learning experiences will continue well beyond the virus. Our goal is to create and deliver over the internet and out of the box, programs that are just as engaging as being here in person,” added Ms. Tomme.

Registration for Camp in a Box is now open,
and includes a special member’s only discount. Scholarship opportunities are also available, and information is available on the Museum’s website.

Visit the museum website at BoonshoftMuseum.org, or call 937.275.7431 for more information.

Neon News:

May 20, 2020 By Jonathan McNeal

We’re gonna move forward with some new films this week, but we will absolutely hold onto DRIVEWAYS for another week – NEON fans have loved it. Jane wrote, “DRIVEWAYS was a great film-we really enjoyed it!”  Richard says it’s an “Excellent film,” and Mickey chimed in with “Oh my goodness Driveways is SUCH a wonderful film!” Stuart told folks that DRIVEWAYS is, “Wonderful, poignant, one of Brian Dennehy’s best performances ever, and highly recommended.”  Thanks to all the folks who help spread the word.  If you missed the Q&A for UP FROM THE STREETS, the terrific doc about the Music of New Orleans, you’re in luck – a second has been added! A LIVE Q&A with Terence Blanchard, director Michael Murphy, and Ben Jaffe, Creative Director of Preservation Hall will take place on May 26 at 9pm ET/6pm PT – here’s the LINK where you sign up for the Free Q&A.  We’ll hold the film for another week, too!
Starting today, because we know how Daytonians have really started to embrace short films over the past few years, we are opening a collection of “petite Gallic pleasures” – NEW FRENCH SHORTS 2020.  On Friday, because we love Kristin Scott Thomas and because Dayton is proud of Wright Patt Air Force Base, we are opening MILITARY WIVES (and it’s just in time for Memorial Day).  In addition, on Friday, we will begin the next in the Magnolia Pictures’ Doc Series – A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE DOCS – where you can send in questions to each of the films’ directors (this week’s selection is LIFE ITSELF)!  (Don’t forget –  Tonight, Wednesday, May 20, is the Q&A for RBG!)
Synopsis for NEW FRENCH SHORTS 2020: “This showcase of some of the most exciting new cinematic voices from France runs the gamut from animation to romance to absurdist comedy. Revel in these petite Gallic pleasures, including award winners from Cannes, Locarno, and Palm Springs ShortFest. New French Shorts 2020 is made available through Young French Cinema, a program of UniFrance and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. Selections include: Ahmed’s Song (Foued Mansour, 30m), Sheep, Wolf, and a Cup of Tea… (Marion Lacourt, 12m), Tuesday from 8 to 6 (Cecilia de Arce, 26m), The Distance Between Us and the Sky (Vasilis Kekatos, 9m), The Tears Thing (Clémence Poésy, 25m), Magnetic Harvest (Marine Levéel, 24m), Bonus: The Glorious Acceptance Speech of Nicolas Chauvin (Benjamin Crotty, 26m)” This collection of films will be available for viewing on most computers, phones and tablets as well as via apps on AppleTV, Roku and Firestick. Further details are available on the bottom of the official purchasing site. Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 5 day access to this collection of films for $12.
Synopsis for MILITARY WIVES: Perfect for Memorial Day Weekend! We’re pleased to continue our partnership with Bleecker Street in bringing you their latest release, MILITARY WIVES. From the director of THE FULL MONTY and starring Kristin Scott Thomas (THE ENGLISH PATIENT) and Sharon Horgan (CATASTROPHE), it’s the feel-good movie of the year! “MILITARY WIVES centers on a group of women from different backgrounds whose partners are away serving in Afghanistan. Faced with their loved ones’ absences, they come together to form the very first military wives choir, helping each other through some of life’s most difficult moments, and quickly find themselves on an international stage.” (Bleecker Street) THE DAILY MAIL calls MILITARY WIVES “Hugely engaging, enormously moving.”  Starting May 22, you’ll be able to gain 72 hour access to the film for just $4.99. Click the image below to watch the trailer…the link to purchase the film will be available starting Friday on our website.
MAGNOLIA PICTURES: A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE DOCS is already underway with RBG, and you’ve been invited to ask questions to the directors.  Each Friday, we’ll start a virtual engagement of a great documentary for just $5.00 each.  On the following Wednesday, you can attend a live virtual Q&A with the film’s director – and you’ll be able to submit your own questions in advance. You can either submit them over email to [email protected], or they can tweet at Magnolia by using the hashtag #magnoliadocseries.  Here’s the line-up (click the titles to watch the trailers…the link for RBG and LIFE ITSELF are also where you can gain 72 hour access to each film for $5):
RBG starts on May 15. (Q&A on 5/20 with directors Betsy West and Julie Cohen, moderated by Melena Ryzik from the New York Times)
LIFE ITSELF starts May 22. (Q&A on 5/27 with Chaz Ebert in conversation with director Steve James)
(Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.)  On May 27, foodies will delight in the new documentary DIANA KENNEDY: NOTHING FANCY. Also on the 27th, lovers of classic cinema and film history will adore THE GHOST OF PETER SELLERS. On June 12, we will open the documentary FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO – Daniel Karslake’s follow-up to his film FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO. And sometime in June, we hope to open THE TOBACCONIST – a film I saw and loved at The Cleveland International Film Festival last year.  We’re working to make this a sidebar or encore to the Dayton Jewish Film Festival…and you’ll be invited to participate in a post-screening discussion with yours truly.
There are many other irons in the fire right now, and THE NEON is working hard to make sure that when we’re able to re-open, we can do it as safely as possible. I’ll keep you posted.

Eastbound U.S. 35 Ramp Scheduled For Closure May 27

May 18, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

As part of the Interstate 675 rehabilitation project in Greene County, a single-ramp closure at the U.S. Route 35 and I-675 interchange will go into effect later this month.

Crews will close the ramp from eastbound U.S. 35 to southbound I-675 in order to accommodate the work zone on I-675 where bridge repair will take place at structures just south of the interchange.

The ramp will be closed Wednesday, May 27, and the closure will be in effect for up to 130 days. While it is closed, motorists will be detoured by way of Research Boulevard, North Fairfield Road and westbound U.S. 35 to I-675 South.

Just prior to the eastbound ramp closure, though, the westbound U.S. 35 ramp to southbound I-675 will be closed temporarily for crews to place pavement markings and establish the traffic configuration that will be in place while the eastbound ramp is closed. This short-term closure is scheduled to be in effect May 27, as well, and traffic will be detoured via Col. Glenn Highway.

For overall project updates, visit ODOT’s project page at I-675 Rehabilitation, and for ongoing traffic, construction and weather-related information throughout the state, please check www.OHGO.com.

Zombie Dogz Back to Food Truck Roots

May 15, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

I can remember having my first ZombieDogz in 2014 in the Lowe’s Parking lot on Wilmington Pike.  It was the CALLING IN DEAD:  An all beef hot dog topped with a creamy homemade white truffle mac & cheese  and finished off with crumbled crackers.  It was my first of many experiences at this truck, which quickly established a cult following at food truck rallies, often with waits of up to an hour for one of their gourmet dogs.

In fall of 2016 they opened up a shop near UD on Brown Street.  But sadly, today on Facebook they’ve announced the store will close:

“Good morning everybody. First and foremost we hope that everyone is staying healthy and handling life the best they can right now.

The past year or so have been trying for us as a restaurant. Sales have been down and we’ve been barely getting by every month. Unfortunately having to shut down for 2 months only made matters worse. So with a very heavy heart we will be shutting the restaurant down permanently.

We will start back with the food truck when we can do so safely. Most of the festivals have already been cancelled for the year. So we will be doing what we can this summer and fall to get out there as much as possible. We will be keeping everyone updated when we know exactly when the truck will start back up again.

We want to thank everyone of you for years of constant support and love. Thank you for everything you have always done for us. We love you all and we can’t wait to get out there and see you at the food truck.”

So now we’ll be on the lookout for their Food Truck out and about.
