Qigong at Deeds Park

November 15, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Join us on the grassy circle of Deeds Park, around sunset on Wednesday evenings (appropriately socially distanced, of course) to listen to our energy, body, and state of well-being – and in the process breathe deeply, move slowly and shake off any stress of our day . . . with Qigong. Immortal Tree Qigong will guide participants through Qigong routines that help each participant better understand their own nature—without judgment or competition.  The hour-long session will start with breathing exercises, warm up, Qi activation and gentle stretching.  Participants will then be guided through flowing movements each punctuated by a short standing meditation.  We will end with a slightly longer guided standing meditation before we bow out.

Celebrating the Gateway to Oregon District Mural!

November 13, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

On Saturday, November 14th at 2:00pm, the Oregon District Bridge Mural Reveal-Celebration will take place to celebrate the vision and execution of the mural on Fifth Street that serves as a gateway to the District.  and all those who participated. Social distancing and mask-wearing is required.

Completed by artist Dave Scott, it covers both sides of the 5th Street bridge, which has been a priority for the ODBA board for the last two years. This mural project is part of a broader strategy of the ODBA to strengthen the Oregon District’s distinctive identity and to create “place-making” by providing accessibility to art and creative expression without barriers.

Dana Graham, elected to the ODBA Board in 2020, spearheaded this bridge mural project and brought it to fruition. Graham is the Boutique Coordinator at Puff Apothecary and Office + Community Curator at CANARY Consulting, both businesses are located in the Oregon District. Graham will serve a three-year term on the ODBA board.

“With this opportunity to co-manage the bridge mural project, I was excited that the ODBA could provide the platform to highlight the work of underrepresented talent and see their work shine on what will become an iconic Dayton landmark,” explained Graham. “Dave Scott is an incredibly talented artist and we are so in love with his mural.”

Dave Scott was born and raised in Trotwood, Ohio. Scott takes a simplistic approach to work and considers himself a minimalist. In studying art history and color theory, he has been able to create his own style, using color to express emotion, Dave strives to connect with his audience through purposeful creations.

“The mural to me is a symbol of artistic freedom,” said Scott. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to have done this and I appreciate everyone that helped me complete it. The mural is a huge milestone for my career. With it only being my second mural, it takes me to that next level and I’m excited to see what’s next. I hope it brings new life to people in the Oregon District and inspires them in ways I can’t even fathom.”

This piece of public art was a collaborative effort. Scott assembled a team of local talent enlisting B.K Elias and Lydia Williamson to help execute his vision. Dozens of volunteers also assisted Scott with this giant undertaking.

Kyle Babirad, owner of CANARY Consulting and president of the ODBA explained, “This mural has been in the works for such a long time. It was important to our [ODBA] board to create a spectacular entrance and gateway into the district that represented the vibrancy of our businesses and of our residential neighborhood. Dana’s leadership on this project did so much more than just commission a work of art, she worked with many stakeholders and in selecting Dave Scott, helped to assemble a community of artists to represent our entire city.”

“It’s important to know that the creative community of Black + Brown and other minority identities, especially those of the millennial generation, have always been abundant in the city of Dayton. We’ve contributed to different artistic eras, political movements, community re-shaping, and entrepreneurial landscapes. The painting of the Oregon District bridge is just another great example of that influence that will continue building the culture of our city,” said Graham.

Dayton’s Newest Mural Celebrates Dayton Firefighters

November 13, 2020 By Guest Contributor

Dayton’s incredible artist Tiffany Clark has done it again. Another incredible work of art and in her own words she tells us about this project:

“The Incredible History of Dayton Firefighters Union 136” is now complete. It is located on Buckeye with the timeline starting near Main Street and Ending on Warren (Brown Street).

The idea has taken almost two years to come to fruition. The theme was a collective idea between firefighter/medics and the artist. It is their history.. our history.. reimagined in the style of the Golden Era of Comics.

Most of these heroes are a part of someone’s worst day.. when we’re hurt, scared, and in need they are there to help. They are a part of our history and our memories. But they wanted to be a part of a beautiful memory for this city .. experienced through paint. They want you to see they’re just big kids, with big hearts that wanna make a difference everyday. Here are finished images in the correct timeline, but it’s always a wonderful experience to see public art in person and to scale.

On Thanksgiving we will be launching a website to sell prints of the panels and a comic poster version. Part of the funds will be going to the FF Union 136. They always do so much to give back to this city. 2020 has been especially rough on them for many reasons.. medics during a pandemic, lower funds, and loss of two firefighters this year. So be on the look out for that opportunity to give back and put a piece of Dayton history in your home or as a gift.

Thank you to Station11 for hosting me and being so kind. Thank you to Jimmy and Boomer for being my buddies and muses. Thank you Bryan Stewart for getting this going.. there’s a Dalmatian for you. 😉 Thank you to all of the volunteers who were able to add time, talent, and paint: Atalie Gagnet, Leslea Hipp, Sheena Whittemore, Amy Kollar Anderson, Tabitha Peters-Guidone, Laura Ess, Margie Harrell, Sophia Carey, Sarah Richard, Jordyn Grant, Lillian Herbert, and Jordan Freshour(for rolling out those first panels and for photos).”

Celebrating the Revival of The Arcade

November 13, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

With the first phase of the restoration of the Dayton Arcade nearing completion, ThinkTV, the Dayton Metro Library and Cross Street Partners have teamed up for a week-long celebration of the history and future of the iconic Dayton Arcade.

An exhibit of the Dayton Arcade’s rich history will be on display at the Dayton Metro Library, 215 E. Third Street. The exhibit, featuring memorabilia from the early history of the Arcade and the Save the Arcade campaign, will be on display through February in the Dayton Room on the Main Library’s second floor. The photographs, art and artifacts can be viewed in the windows of the Dayton Room. Visitors who wish to go inside the room should call the library at 937-463-2665 to schedule a time for their visit.

“We’re pleased to host this look at the Arcade’s grand past,” said Special Collections Manager Jamie McQuinn. “The Dayton Room is home to hundreds of vintage photos of the city of Dayton, and the Arcade has long been one of its greatest gems.”

To continue the week-long celebrating, ThinkTV will premiere the first of their three-part documentary – Dayton Arcade: Waking the Giant – at 9pm on Monday, November 16, on ThinkTV16. It will also be made available on the ThinkTV website and on the PBS Video App. The first part of this exclusive, local documentary gives a behind-the-scenes look at the beginning phases of the restoration of the Dayton Arcade with the remaining two-parts of the documentary expected to premiere later in the year of 2021.

“The Dayton Arcade documentary is a story that reflects the hope, resilience and future of the Dayton community. Capturing this story while this transformation has been happening behind historic walls has been nothing short of a privilege for our team to work on,” ThinkTV President and CEO Kitty Lensman said.

Excitement is stirring in anticipation of the reveal of the Dayton Arcade’s transformation. Cross Street Partners oversaw this massive project from the beginning and have worked to ensure that the historical beauty has been preserved while maximizing functionality.

“Cross Street Partners, Model Group and McCormack Baron Salazar are working to recast the building in much the same way it was initially developed in the first decade of the 20th century — with a mix of retail, offices, event space and apartment housing. The first phase of the project, the South Arcade, will consist of an innovation center with the University of Dayton as a higher education partner in addition to a 110-unit residential LIHTC and market rate development for artists and creative entrepreneurs. The second phase, the North Arcade, will include a shared commercial kitchen program, a marketplace retail and restaurant environment, and micro-lofts or hospitality user space,” said David Williams, senior director of development of Cross Street Partners.

To learn more about ThinkTV’s three-part documentary, visit www.thinktv.org/dayton-arcade. For additional information about the Library’s exhibit, visit www.DaytonMetroLibrary.org or call 937-463- 2665. Details about the renovation of the Dayton Arcade can be found at www.arcadedayton.com and @DaytonArcade on social media.

HILLBILLY ELEGY and AMMONITE News From The Neon

November 11, 2020 By Jonathan McNeal

Hello NEON Fans.
We’ve got two, star-studded films opening at THE NEON this week. HILLBILLY ELEGY, directed by Ron Howard and starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close, just opened today (though usually associated with big Hollywood fare, Howard is no stranger to THE NEON…he directed the NEON hit documentary PAVAROTTI last year). On Friday, we will open the gorgeous period film AMMONITE – starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan. (Director Francis Lee is also no stranger – his critically acclaimed film GOD’S OWN COUNTRY played at The Dayton LGBT Film Festival in 2017.).
Today marks the start of RECON in our Virtual Cinema. This is the film that we’ve partnered with The Dayton Literary Peace Prize in order to bring to you. And after its successful in-person screenings at THE NEON, we will bring CHUCK LEAVELL: THE TREE MAN to our Virtual Cinema starting this Friday.
NEW FILMS FOR IN-PERSON SCREENINGS
Synopsis for HILLBILLY ELEGY: “J.D. Vance (Gabriel Basso), a former Marine from Middletown, Ohio and current Yale Law student, is on the verge of landing his dream job when a family crisis forces him to return to the home he’s tried to forget. J.D. must navigate the complex dynamics of his Appalachian family, including his volatile relationship with his mother Bev (Amy Adams), who’s struggling with addiction. Fueled by memories of his grandmother Mamaw (Glenn Close), the resilient and whip-smart woman who raised him, J.D. comes to embrace his family’s indelible imprint on his own personal journey. Based on J.D. Vance’s #1 New York Times Bestseller and directed by Academy Award winner Ron Howard, HILLBILLY ELEGY is a powerful personal memoir that offers a window into one family’s personal journey of survival and triumph. By following three colorful generations through their unique struggles, J.D.’s family story explores the highs and lows that define his family’s experience.” (taken from Netflix) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for AMMONITE: “In 1800s England, acclaimed but unrecognized fossil hunter Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) works alone on the rugged Southern coastline. With the days of her famed discoveries behind her, she now searches for common fossils to sell to tourists to support herself and her ailing mother. When a wealthy visitor entrusts Mary with the care of his wife Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), she cannot afford to turn his offer down. Proud and relentlessly passionate about her work, Mary initially clashes with her unwelcome guest, but despite the distance between their social class and personalities, an intense bond begins to develop, compelling the two women to determine the true nature of their relationship.” (Neon Rated) Click the image below to watch the trailer.
NEW IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA
Synopsis for RECON: We’re partnering with The Dayton Literary Peace Prize to bring a film that compliments one of their upcoming events. RECON (based on the novel PEACE by Richard Bausch) is now available for you to watch in our Virtual Cinema…then on November 16, you can join this wonderful organization’s discussion “Turn the Page: The Legacy of War” – a discussion between Richard Bausch and Andrew Krivak – both prize recipients from The Dayton Literary Peace Prize. For details about the special event with DLPP, visit this LINK. “Adapted from the critically acclaimed New York Times best seller PEACE by famed author Richard Bausch, and based on a true event – RECON tells the story of four American soldiers in WW2, who after they witness a vicious murder of an innocent civilian at the hands of their platoon Sergeant, are sent on a reconnaissance/suicide mission lead by a local partisan, an elderly man whose indeterminate loyalties add to the terror and confusion that engulfs the Americans as they are hunted by an unseen enemy. RECON centers around young men in the midst of war. The action occurs over the course of one long day between four soldiers placed in a crucible, as they debate both their fates and that of life itself. Each has a different perspective, liberal, racist, uncertain – a metaphor for the America both of 1945 and 2018. As the soldiers fight amongst themselves they realize they are being both hunted and haunted by a mysterious sniper and the specter of a burning question – is their Italian guide, this old man from the village, a fascist sympathizer who wishes to lead them to their death? As they struggle to make it off the mountain alive, these American soldiers face the worst that war can offer men…. and through this each finds their own peace.” (Brainstorm Media) This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device or via your Roku or AppleTV. For additional information regarding accessibility of the film, please visit this Eventive HELP page. Click the image below to watch the trailer and purchase 72 hour access to this film for $12.
Synopsis for CHUCK LEAVELL: THE TREE MAN: Daytonian Allen Farst has a new documentary about a rock’n’roll legend that is filled with big stars. After its successful in-person run, we are happy that we can now offer the film virtually. “Filmed in four countries with more than 80 interviews from artists with a combined 58 Grammy Awards by the artist included, CHUCK LEAVELL: THE TREE MAN is the cinematic documentary that shines a light on one of the greatest rock’n roll pianists and keyboardists over the last 40 years. Not just known for his musical influence, Leavell is also one of the biggest names in environmental forestry and was selected the National Tree Farmer of the Year in the United States. His commitment to the planet and his strong family ties are refreshing reminders to be kind and treat your neighbor with respect. As Leavell puts it, ‘if you cut a tree down, plant two for the next guy.’Featuring: Allman Brothers Dickey Betts and; Warren Haynes; Rolling Stones Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Woods; President Jimmy Carter; Eric Clapton; Chris Robinson; Mike Mills; Pat Monahan; John Bell; Lee Ann Womack; Bruce Hornsby; John Popper; Bonnie Raitt; Julian Lennon; Charlie Daniels; Miranda Lambert; John Mayer; and David Gilmore, among others” (Niche Productions) This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device or via your Roku or AppleTV. For additional information regarding accessibility of the film, please visit this Eventive HELP page. Click the image below to watch the trailer and purchase 72 hour access to this film for $12.
CONTINUING IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA
Synopsis for CITY HALL: “Fresh off its high profile screenings at the Venice, Toronto and New York Film Festivals – and featuring a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating – Frederick Wiseman’s latest film arrives at the crux of a major crossroads for our nation. City government touches almost every aspect of our lives. Most of us are unaware of or take for granted these necessary services such as police, fire, sanitation, veterans affairs, elder support, parks, licensing of various professional activities, recordkeeping of birth, marriage and death as well as hundreds of other activities that support Boston residents and visitors. CITY HALL, by Frederick Wiseman, shows the efforts by Boston city government to provide these services. The film also illustrates the variety of ways the city administration enters into civil discourse with the citizens of Boston.” (Zipporah Films) This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device or via your Roku or AppleTV. For additional information regarding accessibility of the film, please visit this Eventive HELP page. Click the image below to watch the trailer and purchase 72 hour access to this film for $12 (as an FYI – this film is 4.5 hours, and many critics have said they could have kept going).
Synopsis for RADIUM GIRLS: “Teenage sisters, Bessie and Jo, dream of faraway places as they paint glow-in-the-dark watch dials at the American Radium Factory. When Jo loses a tooth, Bessie’s world turns upside down as the mystery of Jo’s disease slowly unravels. Bessie befriends two young activists and in a radical coming of age, she investigates a corporate scandal. Bessie and the ‘Radium Girls’ file a lawsuit against American Radium. The notorious case ultimately led to a lasting impact in the area of workplace health and safety as well as the study of radioactivity.” (Juno Films) This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device or via your Roku or AppleTV. For additional information regarding accessibility of the film, please visit this Eventive HELP page. Click the image below to watch the trailer and purchase 72 hour access to this film for $12.
Synopsis for THE DONUT KING: We offered this film in person, and audiences absolutely loved it! Rated “100% Fresh” on rottentomatoes! “Ted’s story is one of fate, love, survival, hard knocks, and redemption. It’s the rags to riches story of a refugee escaping Cambodia, arriving in America in 1975 and building an unlikely multi-million-dollar empire baking America’s favorite pastry, the donut. Ted sponsored hundreds of visas for incoming refugees and helped them get on their feet teaching them the ways of the donut business. By 1979 he was living the American Dream. But, in life, great rise can come with great falls.” (Greenwich Entertainment) Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access for $12.
Here’s a LINK with a video I made about how Virtual Cinema works. Click HERE to see all the films that are still available in our Virtual Cinema.
Wanna know what titles we’re planning in our virtual cinema? (Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.) On November 18, we’ll open MONSOON – a gorgeous film about a man’s personal journey as he returns to his birthplace and struggles to recognize himself in this unfamiliar land. On Nov. 20, we’ll open MODERN PERSUASION (trailer now yet available) – a modern day take on the classic Jane Austen novel directed by Jonathan Lisecki & Alex Appel (Lisecki was a guest at the Dayton LGBT Film Festival several years ago with his hit film GAYBY). On Nov. 25, we’ll open WBCN AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION – a film about a radical underground radio station set against the social, political and cultural changes during the late 60’s and early 70’s. On Dec. 4, we’ll open two new films – the first is ENDING DISEASE – a documentary that looks at advancements in stem cell therapies and curing the incurable. One subject of the film is Ryan Custer, a former Wright State basketball player who suffered a neck injury; the second is ANOTHER ROUND – Denmark’s highest grossing film in several years starring Mads Mikkelsen. More titles are on the way…stay tuned!
We hope to see you soon!
Be safe & well.
My best,
Jonathan

Rike’s Holiday Windows Tradition Continues

November 11, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Dayton Live is pleased to announce that Yes, Virginia, the Rike’s Holiday windows will be on display for the public this holiday season – with restrictions and cautionary procedures in keeping with Montgomery County Health Department and CDC guidelines. The newly redesigned windows were revealed last season for the enjoyment of families from all over the Miami Valley.

Designed by critically acclaimed theatre and opera scenic designer and Dayton native Adam Koch, along with partner Steven Royal, the windows featuring animated elves, animals and other figures have been a holiday tradition for countless Dayton families since the elves first appeared in the windows of Rike’s Department Store in the 1940s.

In 2018, two of the redesigned windows, “The Nutcracker” and “The North Pole,” debuted to the delight of thousands of visitors. Four more windows were revealed in 2019: “Woodland,” ”Silent Night,” “Snow Day,” and “Christmastime,” each with characters from the original windows as well as some newly discovered and donated figures. The boxes were constructed by internationally acclaimed set and stage designers, Scenic Solutions from West Carrollton, Ohio, with costumes created by the Dayton Sewing Collaborative.

The schedule for viewing the windows will be different this year due to COVID-19 restrictions and CDC guidelines. Patrons may register for a specific viewing time slot during the three-week schedule: December 2-6, December 9-13, and December 16-20. Hours will vary by day. Masks and social distancing will be required, and extended sanitizing regimens will be in place. For complete details on cautionary measures and to register for a time slot, go to daytonlive.org/holiday.
