Lasagna Love Meets The Huffman Project

May 26, 2021 By Laura Rea

Lasagna Love is a national project to feed families, spread kindness and strengthen communities. Lisa Hade recently accepted the position as Regional Leader for the Dayton Area. “After delivering Meals on Wheels for 5 years, I saw first hand how kindness and a good meal can make someone’s day. Lasagna Love enabled me to do all of that but cook the meal myself!” Shortly after taking on the regional leader position, she wanted to do more direct outreach to those in need.

The Huffman Project (THP) was a great candidate. This relatively new non-profit is a truly innovative behavioral health project, combining a clinician and peer support specialist to engage with street homeless individuals, providing peer support and connecting clients with behavioral health services, as well as food and emergency supplies. Founded by Kierstyn Crawford, a clinical mental health and addiction counseling supervisor, and Billy Brokschmidt, a certified peer support specialist and CDCA, the THP team works primarily out of St. Paul’s Church in The Huffman Historic District.

Providing emergency supplies and connecting individuals with behavioral health services, during the meals served at St Paul Church, it made sense to see if the local Lasagna Love chef corps could bring a hot meal to their clients. On Thursday, May 6th, Lisa and Kierstyn organized a test run – having a group of chefs prepare 18 pans of homemade lasagna to be shared with THP clients. Many individuals arrived to enjoy a hot meal that day. In addition to hot lunches, individuals were offered non-perishable food, blankets, clothing, hygiene items, harm reduction supplies (such as Narcan), and connections to community services and resources. THP welcomes community engagement, and relies on support from volunteers and donors to reach those in need. More information can be found on their Facebook page. You can also support by purchasing items from their Amazon Wishlist.

Lasagna Love needs more volunteer chefs to meet the growing need in the community. “Through community outreach, Lasagna Love is catching on and we are receiving many requests from Dayton families who could use some help with providing a hearty, nutritious meal for their families. More volunteer lasagna chefs are needed to keep up so that we can help as many people as quickly as possible. The more chefs we have the more we will also be able to provide meals to community groups like the Huffman Project.” For more information, or to sign up as a volunteer chef, visit https://lasagnalove.org/

Buddy Guy Tickets on Sale Friday for August Show at The Rose

May 24, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Multi-Grammy Award winning blues icon Buddy Guy and Grammy-nominated blues/soul/funk group Robert Randolph & The Family Band will hit the road together this year. The duo will stop in Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center on Friday, August 27.

The title of Buddy Guy’s latest album says it all: The Blues Is Alive and Well. The legendary blues artist’s eighteenth solo LP and follow-up to 2015’s Born to Play Guitar showcases his raw and unadulterated sound, its fifteen tracks a true pleasure for aficionados and genre newcomers alike. Buddy Guy is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to the city’s halcyon days of electric blues. Buddy Guy has received 7 GRAMMY Awards, a Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY Award, 37 Blues Music Awards (the most any artist has received), the Billboard Magazine Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement, a Kennedy Center Honor, and the Presidential National Medal of Arts. At 83 years young, Guy proves that it gets greater later as he continues to record and tour around the world.

Many musicians claim that they “grew up in the church,” but for Robert Randolph that is literally the case. The renowned pedal steel guitarist, vocalist and songwriter led such a cloistered childhood and adolescence that he heard no secular music while growing up. If it wasn’t being played inside of the House of God Church in Orange, New Jersey — quite often by Robert and members of his own family, who upheld a long but little known gospel music tradition called sacred steel — Randolph simply didn’t know it existed. Which makes it all the more remarkable that the leader of Robert Randolph and the Family Band — whose label debut for Sony Masterworks, Got Soul — is today an inspiration to the likes of Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana and Derek Trucks, all of whom have played with him and studied his technique. It wasn’t until he was out of his teens that Randolph broke away from the confines of his social and musical conditioning and discovered rock, funk, soul, jazz and the jam band scene, soon forging his own sound by fusing elements of those genres.

By the early 2000s, Randolph had begun applying his dazzling steel guitar technique to secular music, and from that grew the Family Band. The group’s sound was so different than anything else around that they were soon packing New York City clubs. Their first album, 2002’s Live at the Wetlands, was recorded at the now defunct jam band haven, and was followed by four studio albums and another live set, each widening the band’s audience—they’ve long been regulars on the festival circuit—and broadening their stylistic range as well.

Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning at 11am on Friday, May 28th at Ticketmaster.comand RoseMusicCenter.com.

Over $40,000 Raised With CTW’s Men At Work Campaign

May 21, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Clothes That Work today shared the results of their 2021 Men at Work campaign following a special virtual awards celebration on Thursday, May 20, and named Tyler Greenwood, from The Greentree Group, the 2021 Clothes That Work Ambassador of the Year.

This year’s event featured 25 local businessmen and community leaders who campaigned as Role Models for votes to earn the honor of Clothes That Work’s Ambassador of the Year. Each vote purchased was a $5 donation to Clothes That Work, and people were encouraged to vote for their favorites. The men engaged in three weeks of themed competitions, and results were tallied to determine the overall winner.

The 2021 Role Models earned the most votes ever received during the annual Men At Work campaign. The men collectively secured 5,887 votes, and when combined with sponsorships and special event revenue, they raised just over $40,000 to support Clothes That Work’s programs and services. Greenwood took home the title of Ambassador of the Year by securing 2,266 votes and personally raising $11,330 for the organization…a new record from a Men At Work winner.

Mark Brewer

Additional awards were given to the weekly themed competition winners including:

  • Tyler Greenwood from The Greentree Group received the “First Impressions Award”
  • Mark Brewer from Retail Resource received the “Workplace Image Award”
  • Tyler Greenwood from The Greentree Group received the “Casually Cool Award”

“The dedication, enthusiasm and hard work from all of the Role Models helps us make a difference in the lives of our clients,” said Clothes That Work Executive Director Cindy Garner. “We raised over $40,000 making it our most successful campaign ever. Every dollar of the money raised goes directly to the Clothes That Work mission to clothe, educate and empower individuals to prepare them for employment success and help build a stronger Dayton workforce. This campaign inspires our job seekers and shows them that being a Role Model is attainable for them as well.” Men at Work was created seven years ago with a simple goal in mind: to engage men in the mission and vision of Clothes that Work.  For years, the organization mostly served women, but today, men make up more than 58 percent of Clothes That Work clients.  Collectively, Men at Work has generated over $190,000 to support the organization’s programs and services.

DAI To Host A Virtual Backyard Ball In Place of Art Ball

May 21, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) has announced a new at-home fundraising event, Backyard Ball, taking place on June 26. Featuring a special selection of appetizers, wines and special surprises in a commemorative Party Pack, this online fundraiser takes the place of the museum’s traditional Art Ball gala. The DAI made the decision not to hold Art Ball in 2021, for the safety of guests and staff, and began planning for Backyard Ball earlier in the spring.

“We are excited to present Backyard Ball, a fresh, new take on Art Ball! We know how much the community treasures Dayton’s oldest gala, and this format allows the museum’s friends and patrons to continue their support. Our Art Ball chairs, Ariel and Brian Walker, along with the members of our Associate Board, have created a fun and festive event to welcome the first days of summer,” said Dayton Art Institute Director & CEO Michael R. Roediger.

As with the traditional Art Ball, Backyard Ball will be themed around a featured artwork from the DAI collection. Event chairs Ariel and Brian Walker have chosen Janet Fish’s Embroidery from Uzbekistan (2008) as the featured artwork for Backyard Ball.

Backyard Ball Party Packs go on sale May 26, at www.daytonartinstitute.org/artball.

Two levels of Party Packs are available, Patron and Grand Patron. Each includes two bottles of wine, a specially designed cocktail-hour party box for two guests and access to an exclusive online party taking place on June 26. Grand Patron packages also include an additional bottle of sparkling wine and a floral centerpiece from The Flower Shoppe.Grand Patron Party Packs are $395 each and Patron Party Packs are $295.

Each Party Pack includes: Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc and Terre d’OroRosé; an appetizer box from Kohler Catering featuring various mini appetizers, charcuterie board and desserts; and access to the online party on June 26. The upgraded Grand Patron level includes a bottle of Mumm sparkling Rosé and a floral centerpiece from The Flower Shoppe, specifically inspired by the Backyard Ball featured artwork, Janet Fish’s Embroidery from Uzbekistan.

Backyard Ball also includes a Grand Draw Raffle, featuring five prize packages of gift cards valued at $1,000 or more. Each gift card was purchased by a DAI Associate Board member or DAI staff member from local Dayton businesses that usually donate gift cards to the Art Ball raffle.

Ariel Walker

“This year, we really wanted to show our support for our beloved Dayton businesses who generously donated to Art Ball in previous years,” said Ariel Walker, Backyard Ball chair. “We know local businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic, and we just wanted to show the same generosity they’ve shown this event and the DAI.”

Raffle tickets are $50 each and can be purchased online atwww.daytonartinstitute.org/artball beginning May 26.  A Party Pack does not have to be purchased in order to purchase raffle tickets. Raffle winners will be drawn on June 26.

“We hope that our museum friends will host a Backyard Ball of their own and celebrate the DAI as we reach the end of the pandemic. This fundraiser is vital to us coming out of the COVID-19 crisis financially sound and stronger than before,” Roediger said. “The exclusive online party will include music, wine tasting presentations and a special gallery tour of previous Art Ball featured artworks from the DAI’s collection, as well as many other surprises,” Roediger said.

Party Packs are only available for a very limited time and must be purchased in advance via the DAI website. Sales end June 16, with pickup taking place at the museum on Saturday, June 26, from 3 to 5 p.m. This is a pickup-only event; Party Packs cannot be shipped. The DAI will announce additional details about Party Pack pickup in early June. The online party begins at 8 p.m. on June 26.

All proceeds from this new fundraiser help benefit operations at the Dayton Art Institute.

Party Pack and Grand Draw Raffle purchasers must be at least 21 years old and residents of the state of Ohio. Participants who place orders are asserting that they are 21 years old or more and are Ohio residents.  Participants must produce a valid photo identification, including proof of Ohio residency and age, when picking up Party Packs. No exceptions will be made.

The Dayton Art Institute collection galleries are open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. For more information about planning a visit, go towww.daytonartinstitute.org or call 937-223-4ART (4278).

STRAIGHT NO CHASER Tickets on Sale May 21st

May 20, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Dayton Live is proud to confirm that chart-topping a cappella group STRAIGHT NO CHASER will finally hit the road in-person this year  after a year of cancellations due to the pandemic.

STRAIGHT NO CHASER ushered in the modern a cappella craze with their breakthrough version of “The 12 Days of Christmas” twelve years ago.  Since then, the group has clocked in two RIAA-certified Gold records with more than 1 billion streams and sold more than 1.5 million concert tickets worldwide to their unforgettable live shows.  Last year, the group unveiled their latest holiday album, Social Christmasing, featuring the group’s signature twist on Christmas classics like “Silver Bells” and “Frosty The Snowman,” five new original songs, and a hopeful take on the Counting Crows classic “A Long December.”

The “Back In The High Life” Tour, kicking off October 22 at Minnesota’s Mystic Showroom.  The Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center will welcome STRAIGHT NO CHASER back to Dayton for one night only on December 22, 2021.

The general public on-sale date is tomorrow: Friday, May 21 at 10 A.M. at https://daytonlive.org/events/straight-no-chaser or by phone at 937-228-3630.  For more information, visit https://sncmusic.com/tour.

“To say we are excited is a huge understatement,” said group member Steve Morgan.  “We cannot wait for the curtain to come up and for us to see actual fans and not cardboard cutouts.  We are so grateful for our fans who invited us into their homes to perform virtually over the last year, but there is no replacing the real thing.  We cannot wait to feel the energy of being in the same room as our fans again.”

“Back in the High Life” will give fans the first opportunity to see the group perform that song in-person plus tracks from last year’s album Social Christmasing, as well as a mix of brand new arrangements and fan favorites, with a setlist changing each night.  STRAIGHT NO CHASER will release a deluxe edition of Social Christmasing later this fall. More details will be released soon.

Looking ahead to the holidays, the nine group members have compiled their favorite cocktail and food concoctions in Straight No Chaser Sound Bites: A Cappella, Cocktails, and Cuisine, a recipe book with personal family memories shared with the broader Chaser family and published by Red Lightning Books (a sister company of IU Press).  Sound Bites is due out November 2, but it is currently available for pre-order on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Red Lightning, and on Straight No Chaser’s site.

Dayton Air Show Drops Drive-In Format And Returns To A Normal Show

May 20, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Governor DeWine’s announcement that Ohio’s health restrictions will end on June 2nd has given the CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger the green light to conduct a “normal” show in 2021. Show officials jumped at the chance to fully reopen and present a traditional show program complete with static display aircraft, specialty seating and a star-studded line-up of top aerobatic performers.

This year’s show will be headlined by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on July 10th and 11th. 2021 marks the 46th anniversary of Dayton’s premier summer event held at Dayton International Airport.

“Hurray! We are back to a normal show,” proclaimed Scott Buchanan, Chairman of the United States Air and Trade Show Board of Trustees, producers of the event. “We’re so excited to return and give the people of Dayton an outdoor summer event to enjoy with family and friends. We have an incredible lineup of performers, comfortable seating and delicious food and beverages, so come on out and enjoy summer…it’s been a long time since we have been able to do this,” Buchanan added.

Show officials have spoken to Public Health Dayton & Montgomery County and received Ohio Department Public Health’s new order permitting the show to return to normal operations. The show will operate as it has in the past. Static aircraft will be available for public viewing and popular specialty seating areas like the Pavilion, Blue Sky Chalet, and Photo Pit will be open.

The show values its customers and will be implementing some new initiatives that will make guests feel comfortable and safe:

  • ➢  Fresh Air: Everything is outdoors. Nothing like good ole fresh air on a beautiful summer day.
  • ➢  Space: We have over 100 acres of show grounds. Plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the show.
  • ➢  Hand Sanitation Stations: Hand sanitation stations throughout site for guest convenience and safety .
  • ➢  Specialty Seating: All umbrella table seating areas, Pavilion, Blue Sky Chalet, private chalets and Chairman’s Club spaced a minimum of 6’ apart.
  • ➢  Cleaning: Tables, restrooms and other surfaces disinfected each day.

Show spectators will enjoy a full, four-hour feature flying show in 2021. Joining the world-renowned U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will be an all-star lineup including the U.S. Army Golden Knights, the AeroShell Aerobatic Team, the amazing Shockwave Jet Truck, all-new Lucas Oil Airshows, and Jacquie B “Ladies, it’s Time to Fly” aerobatics. Additional attractions to the 2021 show will be announced soon.

  •

This year is a special year for the Thunderbirds in Dayton. Flying in Thunderbird # 6 as opposing solo will be Dayton native, Major Kyle Oliver. Born at Wright-Patterson AFB Medical Center, Kyle went on to graduate from Beavercreek High School and Ohio State University. He was inspired to join the U.S. Air Force while watching the Thunderbirds as a teen visitor to the Dayton Air Show. What a true Dayton, Ohio homecoming!

2021 show tickets are on sale now at the show’s website, www.daytonairshow.com. Customers can enjoy a print-at-home option on all website purchases. Beginning June 1, 2021, customers can conveniently purchase discount general admission tickets at area Kroger stores.
