RTA Unveils First Two Community Buses In “Proudly Serving” Project

October 11, 2021 By Dayton937

The Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is paying special tribute to the communities in Montgomery County it proudly serves with its “Proudly Serving” project, showcasing points of interest in various cities where its buses travel. The project officially kicks-off today, Oct. 11, with the debut of RTA’s first two buses: Kettering and Trotwood.

This project is the culmination of a vision RTA CEO Bob Ruzinsky had more than a year ago to honor the communities the agency serves, and how its buses can connect people to these places.

“Too often in our busy lives we overlook the great places all around us in the communities we each call home,” Ruzinsky said.  “These buses will highlight some of the great places in these diverse communities, and, we hope, foster increased community pride throughout Montgomery County.”

Each bus design was carefully crafted to emphasize points of interest in a specific community where the RTA takes riders. To capture these locations, RTA worked with a professional photographer to collect high-resolution photos of about 130 public locations around Montgomery County. The creativity doesn’t stop there, as the buses also feature a fun fact, estimated population, and the year the city or township was founded.

City leaders from Kettering and Trotwood were honored to be the first communities represented in the “Proudly Serving” project.

Trotwood has an interesting fact of its own: it is the only city in the United States named “Trotwood.” It was named after “Betsy Trotwood,” a character from Charles Dickens’ “David Copperfield.” That fun fact is featured on the side of the city’s striking blue bus, along with pictures of the Trotwood Government Building, Trotwood-Madison High School, Trotwood Track and Field, Community and Cultural Arts Center, Iams Homestead Museum, and the Trotwood-Madison Park Playground.

“It feels good to be included. I realize we are the first of two (RTA is) starting out with, and it’s good to be first,” said Yvette Page, council member for Trotwood’s 2nd ward. “Most important is the vision of RTA and the collaboration of the RTA and the city of Trotwood, and that we are both here to serve the community.”

“Greater Dayton RTA kept this under wraps (pun intended) for over a year to surprise all of us with a unique way to honor the communities they serve,” stated City Manager Mark Schwieterman. “The truth is, this gesture reminds us of the terrific services RTA offers communities. We are humbled by the planning, coordination, and research that went into this project specific to each community. Residents will recognize things about their hometown on the buses and perhaps learn something new as well. Our sentiment is ‘Kettering is home,’ and this RTA initiative certainly enhances that feeling.”

RTA’s Kettering bus features colors associated with the city in addition to well-known places such as: Kettering Recreation Complex, Fraze Pavilion, Kettering Government Center, Polen Farm and Wenzler Park. There’s also a special nod to Bart Simpson on the side of the bus, connecting to Kettering’s fun fact that Nancy Cartwright, a Kettering native, is the voice of the character on “The Simpsons.”

In total, there will be 22 buses highlighting the different communities served by RTA’s traditional big bus service. The agency intends to roll-out at least one bus a month over the next year. This is just one of the many ways RTA is proudly serving the communities of Montgomery County.

For more information on the RTA and how it connects you to the communities of Montgomery County, visit www.iriderta.org.

Theater Is Back….and CABARET Delivers the GOODS!

October 6, 2021 By Y. K. Cuts

Vanae Pate scores as LuLu!

The cast is gathered together, talking, giving ideas to their director, Dayton Native, Philip Drennen. He likes to hear from his actors and dancers, and he welcomes their ideas. ‘The strength of this cast,’ Drennen says ‘is they genuinely like each other and build each other up. That makes their on-stage performance cohesive and electric.’ Drennen chose CABARET, one of Broadways’ truly iconic shows, because ‘it is relevant even today. It’s balance of dark and light is historic and yet, contemporary!’

Charity Farrell brings Bowles to LIFE!

As the music begins in their 3rd practice venue, the Cannery, the cast takes a deep breath knowing once it starts, its full-on CABARET! Charity Farrell, who shines as Sally Bowles, the show’s broken, scarred female lead, puts every inch of her soul into the role. ‘I understand Sally. ADHD, the struggles, her demons….yet she controls the room!’ Farrell’s MAYBE THIS TIME is goosebump worthy. ‘I have been in many, many shows, but I can feel the support of this company. They are so generous and giving as a cast!’

Midway through practice, they EMCEE, brought to ‘bigger-than-life status by 6’4″ newcomer, Alex Everett, belts out one of his many tunes with wonderfully eerie tones and strange physicality. Lights change, music fades and we are back in a 1930’s apartment building awaiting the ‘play within a play’ transition.

Although the show has songs we all know, many times people forget the backdrop….the beginning of the Rise of the Nazis. ‘You forget what complacency does,’ says Amy Askins, who brings her character, Fraulein Kost, a delicious, slutty energy. ‘The shows begs us to pay attention to what’s happening around us. For my character, it’s about survival.  She tries to make the best of things in a world about to turn upside-down. She gives us a glimpse into her heart, and we see how some people must sell their soul to get by.’

The cast, uniquely diverse, is well suited for the political drama. ‘The storyline is so important. Our cast is made up of so many minorities and it highlights the idea of hatred and ignorance in the script.’ says Naman Clark, a Dayton Theater staple. ‘You see why we have to stand up for what is right.’

The lights are on as rehearsals start at D2D!

CABARET has had many revivals, many versions of the same tale. Drennen looked to make his version pertinent to today, without losing sight of its roots. Take the cherished character of Fraulein Schneider. ‘I knew I wanted to use this moment to open peoples’ eyes to all kinds of ways of life. I called Josh Stucky and said, ‘What if you play Schneider?’ Stucky, a well-known drag queen in the Dayton Area,  jumped at the opportunity.

Winters, Stucky and Everett ready themselves for Cabaret!

‘First of all, I love Schneider. She’s the backbone in CABARET in many ways. And I feel playing her gives all of us a voice….men, women, trans, whatever! She doesn’t need to be any one thing, but rather every kind of thing. I hope to do her justice!’ Stucky’s turn at the tune ‘So What?’ is sweet and endearing, which can also be said for Schneider’s love interest, Dayton theater Patriarch Saul Caplan (Herr Schultz.)

For first-timer Scott Winters, who plays Bobby, his eyes were open to community theater. ‘It is so amazing to see how the pieces fall together and a really great show happens!’ Winters character, a homosexual longing to reunite with the male lead Cliff, dances, sings, and delights as one of the famous Kit Kat Club kids. Dancing is integral in CABARET, and it’s fun, phrenetic and forceful throughout the show…and yes, the Gorilla makes an appearance!

As rehearsal winds down, and Garrett Young’s Clifford Bradshaw leads the cast through the hauntingly unsettled ending, the ensemble sits in an awkward silence. ‘You can feel the broken world we live in in that moment.’ says Young. ‘Each of us trying to figure ourselves out. This leads to the understanding the story is still important today as it was in the 40’s, 60’s 80’s….There is a great cost in doing nothing.’

Theater is back. And so is this importance of story-telling.

Life Is a CABARET and thank GOD this one is open for business!

Show runs 10/13-10/16 at the PNC Art Annex, for 5 shows. There are tickets available at https://www.daytonlive.org/events/cabaret/

The show is sponsored by the RubiGirls and SquareOne Salons.

Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken Brings Back Spicy Bourbon Dippers

October 5, 2021 By Dayton937

Spicy Bourbon Dippers are back on the menu at Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken for a limited time.

Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken is bringing back its Famous Fan favorite Spicy Bourbon Dippers at 45 of the brand’s locations. The popular menu offering was introduced for the first time last year as an innovation of one of Lee’s longtime franchisees.

“We appreciate our creative thinking operators who can take proven menu items and develop new and different flavor pairings,” says Lee’s CEO Ryan Weaver. “Who better than local franchisees to know what established products appeal to their customers? While this product was initially ideated in the Dayton market, we saw last year that it had much broader market appeal. Tossing our already delicious Spicy Jumbo Dippers, which are big bites of our famous boneless chicken, in this Kickin’ Bourbon Sauce with a side of cool ranch for dipping is the perfect fall pairing no matter where you live and enjoy your Lee’s.”

Spicy Bourbon Dippers take Lee’s signature menu item of Spicy Jumbo Dippers and toss them in a spicy bourbon barbeque sauce with a side of ranch for dipping. Lee’s dippers are always freshly marinated in a special blend of seasonings, then hand breaded twice.

All Lee’s Dippers are made with big bites of boneless chicken that are freshly marinated in a special blend of seasonings, then hand breaded twice before hitting the fryer.

You can find Spicy Bourbon Dippers at 45 participating Lee’s locations through November 14, 2021.

Local Podcast Focuses on the Healing Journey

October 3, 2021 By Dayton937

A local podcast is gaining traction with their fully funded Kickstarter campaign and their first season nearing 1000 downloads. Tears, Tides, and Transformation: A Podcast About Healing is hosted by KeAnna Daniels and Bridget Flaherty, women brought together by friendship and a shared passion for real conversations and personal growth. Focusing on the healing journey with tools, tips, and triumph, Ke and Bridget are spreading hope through vulnerability.

Their diverse backgrounds and mutual respect has created a safe place for dialogue about the elephant in the room. Tears, Tides, and Transformation has already distinguished itself as a safe place for women to talk about and listen to stories about overcoming abuse, generational trauma, addiction, mental illness, and life challenges.

Bridget and KeAnna

KeAnna and Bridget interview women who are willing to vulnerably share their experiences with healing and mental health. The hosts then reflect on what they learned from the interview. Each episode provides tips and best practices for tackling the real challenges that are a part of all of our lives.

Here is what people are saying:

“I listened and I cried happy tears because I have a beautiful soul sister who has given me space to be my true self, and continues to love me in spite of my short-comings and flaws. I also recognized my growth and its beautiful to look back and see where I’ve come from” – NaAsiaha Simon, podcast guest

“Just listened to the latest episode of your podcast and I literally felt like I could just sit in Vicki’s lap and cry for an hour. I felt so seen and understood. Thank you for doing this work. I pray its reach is expansive and that it will touch many more lives.” – Nicole McKoy, podcast guest and listener

The podcast is just the beginning. KeAnna and Bridget have a vision of a thriving community of women supporting women on the healing journey including community events, online forum conversations, videos, and written publications.  Their first season can be heard on Apple, Google, Spotify, and Audible.
