Warped Wing Sets Opening Date for Mason Location

January 17, 2022 By Dayton937

Warped Wing Brewing Co. is excited to announce the Grand Opening of their new Mason, Ohio location! The Warped Wing Brewpub & Smokery is located at 5650 Tylersville Rd (at the corner of 42 and Tylersville Rd) and the Grand Opening will take place on Friday, February 4th. The 13,000 square foot facility boasts a large Taproom featuring a menu filled with smoked foods along with an outdoor biergarten opening in the Spring, a small pilot brewing system, and flexible event space.
“It was definitely a unique and rewarding experience melding what was once an old world Irish pub and a fine dining restaurant into a brewery and taproom but our contractors and design team knocked it out of the park,” said Nick Bowman, VP of Sales & Marketing at Warped Wing. “I’m proud of what we’ve put together and excited to share it with the Mason community.”

Brewmaster & Managing Partner John Haggerty is also looking forward to the new space opening in Mason. “I am looking forward to working on some collaboration beers with our fellow Masonians! We already have something in the pipeline with Sonder, a Hoppy Red Rye Ale, and am looking forward to getting together with the other guys in town. It will be great to rub elbows with these guys and be able to learn how they think about beer” said Haggerty. The Sonder collaboration beer, Ryesing Tides, will be on tap for the Grand Opening.

Erin O’Neill, Culinary Director & Director of Retail Operations, will bring an innovative and eclectic menu to complement the robust beer selection, similar to that of the Warped Wing Barrel Room & Smokery which opened in Fall of 2020 in Springboro. There will be a major focus on smoked meat/food items and many of the dishes will feature Warped Wing beers as ingredients. “The smoker is delivered and the smell of smoking meats will soon fill the air” said O’Neill. “It is very exciting to bring our Warped culinary experience to Mason and the surrounding areas. We are building a great team and are excited to put our stamp on an already great food scene.”
Other libations will include hard cider, wine, and a spirits menu with a focus on specialty cocktails, as well as non-alcoholic options like mocktails and housemade sodas, like Root Beer.

Woodland Cemetery Foundation Announce Changes to Boards of Trustees

January 17, 2022 By Dayton937

Woodland Cemetery and Woodland Arboretum Foundation announce that Tony Huffman has resigned from both boards, Robert Laing has resigned from the Arboretum Foundation board and Andy Lehman has joined both boards effective January 1, 2022. Vail Miller, Jr. has been named Chairman of the Cemetery and Arboretum Foundation boards, replacing Tony Huffman, who served as Chairman of both boards since 2019 and as a trustee since 2003.

My 18 years as a Trustee and President of the Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum, was an incredible experience and honor,” stated Tony Huffman.  “During my tenure on the board, I developed not only a high appreciation for the history the cemetery tells of our community, but also the natural beauty of its arboretum. I am especially proud of the fact, that we developed a plan to restore the historic chapel and its priceless Tiffany windows and developed a fund-raising strategy to support this initiative and execute it.  The historic chapel, administrative building and entrance gates are well on their way to completion by year’s end.  I am pleased that Mr. Vail Miller, Jr. is following me as the new President of the Trustees.  Vail’s commitment to our community speaks for itself and he will add his own creative and professional abilities to the future growth of Woodland.”

L to R: Lee Carpenter, Robert Laing, Vail Miller, Jr., Tony Huffman, Andy Lehman, Robert Berner and Sean O’Regan.

Newly appointed Chair Vail Miller Jr. stated, “As a Cemetery Trustee for over 19 years, Mr. Huffman has contributed his time and talent to the great benefit of Woodland and we can’t thank him enough for all that he has done and continues to do for this institution and the Dayton community.  Mr. Laing’s 31 years of dedicated service to Woodland’s mission is remarkable, his input will be missed but his influence continues.  I am pleased to have Andy Lehman join Woodland’s board.  Andy is a tremendous leader who expands the knowledge, talent and commitment of our organization.”

Mr. Lehman joins the boards that oversee Woodland Cemetery’s and Woodland Arboretum’s finances, policies and procedures, strategic planning, and community outreach.

The staff and boards of Woodland Cemetery and Woodland Arboretum Foundation are happy to welcome Andy Lehman, Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President of Kettering Health. An active member of the community, Andy has proudly served on a number of boards.  “Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is a beautiful historic landmark that has been the center of our community for over 180 years. I’m honored to serve and assist their legacy of success” said Mr. Lehman.  Mr. Lehman will join, Vail Miller, Jr., Lee Carpenter, Robert Berner, and Sean O’Regan as Cemetery Trustees.

“It is a bitter-sweet moment in my tenure at Woodland to bid farewell to Tony Huffman and Robert Laing from the active board,” said Sean O’Regan, President and CEO of Woodland.  “Their influence, trust and friendship will always be treasured and their lasting impact is very much appreciated. I am grateful to welcome Mr. Lehman. His leadership, values, along with his interest in the growth and lasting success of Woodland will be an asset to our dedicated board of trustees.”

Woodland Cemetery sits in the heart of downtown Dayton on over 200 verdant acres of rolling hills with over 3,000 trees on the property. This historic cemetery, founded in 1841, welcomes thousands of visitors who tour the grounds each year to visit the grave sites of inventors of powered flight, Wilbur and Orville Wright; poet Paul Laurence Dunbar; Gov. James M. Cox, founder of Cox Media and three-term governor of Ohio; writer Erma Bombeck; inventor Charles F. Kettering; and entrepreneurs John H. Patterson (NCR); George P. Huffman (Huffy Bicycles); and George Mead (Mead Paper Co.).

Woodland Arboretum Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation currently involved in a capital campaign to raise funds for the restoration of the Cemetery’s Romanesque Chapel, Administration Building and Gateway, which are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Explore Cartooning – 4 week class

January 16, 2022 By Dayton937

This class is perfect for a cartoonist/comic book artist who has a project in some stage of development, or at least conception. We’ll work one-on-one to help crystalize your strip or graphic novel, get it going in the right direction, smooth off the rough edges, dismantle the brick walls, jump-start that which is stalled out.

Emphasis on storytelling via illustration. Sessions are kept small enough to maximize individual attention. Of course, guidance tailored to one project may be adapted and applied to others, so never underestimate the value of being in an environment with learners who are likewise motivated.

Mz. Jade Serving Up Soul Food in Middletown

January 12, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Originally from Detroit, Jade moved to the Butler County area 10 years ago, and started her business in 2018 on Yankee Road, where she set up tents and cooked outside to serve the Middletown community with her homemade meals. “Growing up with my Grandmother, she taught me everything. I still remember her recipes, but as I got older, I started making my own recipes,” Jade says. “I still use her recipes daily because she was the best.”  Mz. Jade’s Soul Food Cafe then moved to the Middletown’s Pendleton Art Center and then to Murphy’s Landing.

Now she’s moved the business again to its new home in the former Gracie’s at 1131 Central Ave.  Mz. Jade says she’s “excited to finally have a fully loaded soul food restaurant and a liquor license.” The business is indeed a family business with her sister serving as the bar manager and her son and fiancee in the kitchen.  The menu is packed with soul food favorites including greens, smothered pork chops, catfish and oxtails.  But if you can only try one thing, Mz Jade say’s “don’t miss the meatloaf.  You can have it smothered in gravy, bbq sauce or plain, but like everything else on her menu it’s made with love. She says she learned that from her grandmother and she’s proud of the comfort food she’s serving, just like she got growing up at her grandmother’s table.

On the weekend Mz. Jade offers a special extensive seafood menu, but she shared with us you can get their three seafood boils any night of the week when you dine in.

Once she settles into the new space she’s also thinking of adding a Southern brunch on Sunday that will feature fish and grits, salmon patties and more.

NEON NEWSFLASH: Award Winning DRIVE MY CAR Opens Friday!

January 12, 2022 By Jonathan McNeal

This Friday, we will open one of the most acclaimed & awarded films of 2021 – DRIVE MY CAR. This Japanese drama is quite likely to be a big contender at this year’s Academy Awards…so don’t miss it on the big screen – it may only be here for a week! LICORICE PIZZA will stick around for another week on a full schedule, and THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH will be here for one show per day until January 20.
In the next few weeks, we have some really wonderful films. PARALLEL MOTHERS(fantastic new film from Almodovar with a powerful central performance from Penelope Cruz), FLEE (an animated documentary that will likely garner at least 2 Oscar nominations), and THE VELVET QUEEN (a mesmerizing nature doc set in the Tibetan highlands). We hope to see you often.
During the entire pandemic, we have not raised our ticket prices…even though cost of goods have been rising across the board for months and months. Unfortunately, we have to make a change. Tickets will be going up 50 cents starting this Friday, and we will be exploring our concession prices in the coming days, too. Our prices will still be far below the multiplexes in town, and we hope you can understand the need for this change.
NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENT:
Synopsis for DRIVE MY CAR: Winner of multiple awards around the world including the National Society of Film Critics’ “Best Picture” and “Best Director” prizes. “Two years after his wife’s unexpected death, Yusuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), a renowned stage actor and director, receives an offer to direct a production of Uncle Vanya at a theater festival in Hiroshima. There, he meets Misaki Watari (Toko Miura), a taciturn young woman assigned by the festival to chauffeur him in his beloved red Saab 900. As the production’s premiere approaches, tensions mount amongst the cast and crew, not least between Yusuke and Koji Takatsuki, a handsome TV star who shares an unwelcome connection to Yusuke’s late wife. Forced to confront painful truths raised from his past, Yusuke begins – with the help of his driver – to face the haunting mysteries his wife left behind. Adapted from Haruki Murakami’s short story, Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s DRIVE MY CAR is a haunting road movie traveling a path of love, loss, acceptance, and peace.” (Janus Films) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
CONTINUING IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA
We added two classics to our Virtual Cinema over the weekend (available until Jan. 31), and we still have a handful of contemporary titles available. To read more about all the films that are still available, please visit our WEBSITE. Here’s a LINK with a video I made about how Virtual Cinema works. Our Virtual Cinema is slowing down, but we still want to bring new films now and again that deserve to be seen that you can enjoy from home! More titles are on the way…stay tuned!
In memory of the late, great Peter Bogdanovich – who passed away last week – we have secured the rights to his classic American film THE LAST PICTURE SHOW. Also known for directing other great films such as PAPER MOON, WHAT’S UP DOC? and MASK, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW was the movie that put Bogdanovich on the map. “Released in 1971 to critical acclaim and public controversy, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW garnered eight Academy Award nominations and was hailed as the most important work by a young American director since CITIZEN KANE. A surprisingly frank, bittersweet drama of social and sexual mores in small-town Texas, the film features a talent-laden cast led by Jeff Bridges (THE BIG LEBOWSKI), Cybill Sheperd (TV’s MOONLIGHTING) and Timothy Bottoms (THE PAPER CHASE). Cloris Leachman (TV’s THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW) and Ben Johnson (THE WILD BUNCH) each won Oscars for their work in supporting roles.” (Sony) Click on the image below to watch the trailer and rent the film. This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku (via the Eventive app). Once you unlock the film for $10, you’ll have 24 hours to finish watching it. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s Help Page.
In memory of the incomparable Sidney Poitier – who passed away last week – we have secured the rights to A RAISIN IN THE SUN – the screen adaptation of the award-winning play. Also known for great performances in films like IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, THEY CALL ME MR. TIBBS!, GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER?, LILLIES OF THE FIELD (for which he won an Oscar) and so many more, A RAISIN IN THE SUN saw him performing alongside Ruby Dee and Claudia McNeil. “A RAISIN IN THE SUN is a groundbreaking drama celebrating the human spirit, featuring an electrifying performance by Sidney Poitier. The Younger family, frustrated with living in their crowded Chicago apartment, sees the arrival of a $10,000 insurance check as the answer to their prayers. Matriarch Lena Younger promptly puts a down payment on a house in an all-white suburban neighborhood. But the family is divided when Lena entrusts the balance of the money to her mercurial son Walter Lee, against the wishes of her daughter and daughter-in-law. It takes the strength and integrity of this African-American family to battle against generations of prejudice to try to achieve their piece of the American Dream.” (Sony) Click on the image below to watch the trailer and rent the film. This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku (via the Eventive app). Once you unlock the film for $10, you’ll have 24 hours to finish watching it. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s Help Page.

The school will specifically service Dayton students, however, through after school programming and community partners we plan to offer educational experiences for TDS families and the community. This documentary outlines a story of a young woman’s journey of resilience through poverty to educational success. Follow her on this voyage as she transforms humbling life lessons and early teaching experiences into passion and commitment to create rewarding education environments for all Dayton families. Witness her unflagging support for the Dayton community as a dedicated educator inside and outside of the classroom. It is the belief of The Dayton School that every child, regardless of zip code, economic status, or culture, deserves a free holistic project based style education that transcends beyond high school. For more information regarding The Dayton School, including ways in which you can support prior to viewing, please visit Daytonschoolohio.org.” (taken from press notes)
THE NEON wants to keep our Staff and Patrons safe! Our Board of Directors has sought advisement from Combined Health Dayton & Montgomery County and the Center for Disease Control…we’re also looking at other arthouse cinemas in major markets across the country. We have recently made one minor change to our policy. Masks are now required for all guests age 2 and higher until further notice.  All patrons aged 12 and over will be required to present proof of vaccination with a photo ID or a negative COVID-19 test from the last 72 hours. (Self-reported vaccination records not verified by a third party health care provider are not acceptable. Test results must include name, test result, and a timestamp within the past 72 hours.) We will continue to monitor the community’s health data and amend our policies based on guidance. Please stay tuned to THE NEON’s website for the latest updates. A couple helpful hints!! Take a single picture of your photo ID and your vaccination card in the same shot. You’ll be able to flash this photo at our box office, and that will work as proof enough for us. If you have a smart phone, you could also download the app that most folks in NYC are using to get into movies, Broadway shows and restaurants – NYCCOVIDSAFE. This app will have you take a photo of your ID and your vaccine card – and it saves you from having to hunt for a photo on your phone. I downloaded it, and it’s very easy to use.
Please remember – We ask that you arrive before showtime to allow for checking everyone in before the auditorium gets dark!
Thank you for all of your continued support through these challenging times!
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

January 10, 2022 By Dayton937

The Dayton community is invited to ride for free aboard all RTA fixed-route buses and RTA Connect paratransit services all day on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 17. This will ensure those in the community are able to attend events.

Riders need only board an RTA bus to receive the free ride. For the holiday, RTA will run its normal schedule with the exception of Route 22 which will not run, and Route 43 which will have reduced service. The Flyer will run on its regular weekday services. The RTA Customer Service Call Center will be available from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to take customer calls and Connect Paratransit Reservations.

There may be service delays and rolling route deviations due to the MLK Jr. Day march between approximately 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. along Third Street and the downtown Dayton corridor. The march will begin at the Charles Drew Health Center and end on West Third Street in front of Sinclair College.

Reroutes for Routes 1 and 4 are as follows; eastbound from West Third Street turn right on Paul Laurence Dunbar, left on Germantown Street to 5th Street, left on South Wilkinson Street, back to West Third Street to regular route. As the march moves down West Third Street past Broadway Street, we would use Broadway in place of Paul Laurence Dunbar.

Route 2 eastbound would continue across Broadway, then left on Germantown and 5th Street, to left on Wilkinson Street to regular route.

Reroutes for Routes 1, 2 and 4 westbound from Wright Stop Plaza are as follows; continue on 4th Street to Germantown Street, right on Paul Laurence Dunbar, left on West Third Street to regular route. As the march moves down West Third Street past Broadway Street, we will use Broadway until the march is cleared.

For assistance in planning your trip, visit our website at www.iriderta.org and consult the “Saturday Service” section of your RTA schedule.

Young’s Dairy Celebrates 153rd Birthday

January 10, 2022 By Dayton937

Young’s history begins in 1869 when relatives of the Young Family built the red barn.  Hap Young bought the 60-acre farm and house shortly after the end of World War II.  For the next 10 years, Hap and his three sons, Carl, Bob, and Bill, farmed the 60 acres, plus up to 500 additional rented acres.  They grew grain, raised hogs, and milked cows.

In 1958, the Young Family decided to try to sell  Jersey milk directly to the public.  The first sales room was a modest operation.  They built a 10’ by 10’ room onto the end of the milk room.  The equipment was also modest – some glass jugs, a refrigerator, a cash drawer, and the honor system.  The customer would drive up, open the refrigerator, get his gallon of milk, leave an empty jug and the money, and drive away.

There was a market for farm fresh milk, so in 1960, we build and opened their first real dairy store.  They started dipping ice cream in this store.  They also added other dairy products, like cheese, and snack foods.  This building is attached to the big red barn and is where they make our ice cream today.

In 1993, we added the first activity at Udders & Putters – an 18-hole, farm theme miniature golf course.  1995 marked the first year for our driving range.  1996 saw the addition of a state of the art 9 position batting cage which features softball and hardball pitching machines.

We opened a new full-service restaurant, The Golden Jersey Inn in 1998.  This beautiful timber frame building restaurant features great country style food with a generous helping of friendly service.

In 1999, they built Barnabe’s Walnut Grove, to host group picnics, family reunions and company picnics. Located just south of our popular Udders & Putters area,  Barnabe’s Walnut Grove can easily serve groups with  home cooked meals and delicious homemade ice cream from 50 to over 5,000!  They built an additional 18-hole miniature golf course in 2000 to keep up with the demand for miniature golf.

They added Cowvin’s Fast Slide in 2008 – a 30’ slide with a couple of bumps on the way down. They started making Young’s Farmstead Cheese in July 2009.  Uusing only milk from their herd of Jersey cows to make the cheese, they make Cheddar, Colby, Baby Swiss, Jersey Jack, Pepper Jack, Gouda and Fresh Cheddar Curds.

They continue to make improvements each year, adding  new walking paths, installed ball dryers and a cover home plate area so they can operate the batting cages in the rain and have added to the landscaping around the farm. In 2017 Young’s on the Moove, their food truck hit the road.

To celebrate Young’s Jersey Dairy‘s birthday, from Jan 14- 17 they’ll be offering the following specials:
