Celebrating Daytonian Paul Laurence Dunbar

February 9, 2022 By Dayton937

This year marks the sesquicentennial of Paul Laurence Dunbar’s birth, and there is a  community-wide effort to shine the light brightly on one of America’s greatest poets and introduce the Dayton native’s legacy to a new generation of students.

Dunbar was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Dayton, Ohio, to parents who had been enslaved in Kentucky before the American Civil War, Dunbar began writing stories and verse when he was a child. He published his first poems at the age of 16 in a Dayton newspaper, and served as president of his high school’s literary society.

Dunbar’s popularity increased rapidly after his work was praised by William Dean Howells, a leading editor associated with Harper’s Weekly. Dunbar became one of the first African-American writers to establish an international reputation. In addition to his poems, short stories, and novels, he also wrote the lyrics for the musical comedy In Dahomey (1903), the first all-African-American musical produced on Broadway in New York. The musical later toured in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Suffering from tuberculosis, which then had no cure, Dunbar died in Dayton, Ohio on this day in 1906, Paul at the age of 33.

Here’s what they published:

Visit Cincinnati by bike or foot on the endless Little Miami Scenic Trail.

Little Miami Scenic Trail

The Little Miami Scenic Trail runs 78 miles from Cincinnati to Springfield in Ohio, making it one of the nation’s longest paved multiuse trail networks. A large portion of the trail borders the banks of the Little Miami River, allowing pedestrians to get off foot to kayak or canoe instead. As the longest single path in the Miami Valley network, the well-shaded Little Miami Scenic Trail connects many of the region’s towns and cities, including the historic downtown areas of Loveland, Milford, and Lebanon. Two state parks, John Bryan and Caesar Creek, can be reached from the trail, as well as a number of eateries and breweries to unwind and refuel. The entire Cincinnati region has 116,000 acres of protected greenspace, including 351 parks and nearly 40 nature preserves.

Musicians encouraged to apply to Dayton Porchfest

February 8, 2022 By LIbby Ballengee

Musicians are encouraged to apply to be part of this year’s Dayton Porchfest. The annual neighborhood musical event is held on porches throughout the historic and charming downtown St Anne’s Hill. This year’s event is planned for Saturday, August 20, 2022.

Organizers at The Collaboratory are asking area musicians of all styles to apply to perform. Dayton Porchfest is a multi-genre festival, open to all Dayton-area musicians and bands. Dayton PorchFest is free to attend, and a tips-only festival. Organizers supply the tip jars and aggressively promote tipping the performers. Bands are welcome to sell CDs and merchandise.

For 2022 Dayton Porchfest will be selecting 45-50 performers. The selection of artists will be based on curating five-musically diverse music blocks. Sets are 45-50 minutes and start at 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 PM. The application deadline is 11:59 PM, Monday, February 28, 2022. Link to application: https://daytonporchfest.wixsite.com/home/application

Dayton Porchfest was founded in 2017, inspired by the original Porchfest, which was started in 2007 in Ithaca, NY. Today there are over 150 Porchfests throughout the United States and Canada. Dayton was 94!

Dayton has a rich musical history and active music scene, which continues today. Dayton Porchfest is committed to reflecting that in its selection of musical artists, from funk and hip-hop to blues to indie rock, classical, and country, to bluegrass and old-timey music that has deep Appalachian traditions here. We also celebrate the ethnic diversity of the region, a reflection of our “Welcome Dayton” spirit that has contributed to a significant influx of immigrants and refugees over the past decade.

Dayton Porchfest is an initiative of The Collaboratory, a civic innovation lab that moves ideas to action. The Collaboratory provides infrastructure for people and organizations to collaboratively develop community initiatives that generate new economic, civic, and creative opportunities and value. The result is a healthier, more thriving region. All proceeds from Dayton Porchfest go to support the work of The Collaboratory.

SAVE THE DATE: DAYTON PORCHFEST SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, 2022.

The Australian Pink Floyd Show

Having sold over four million tickets in concerts that have taken place in 35 countries, The Australian Pink Floyd Show is rightfully hailed as one of the most in demand touring entities currently operating; The Times described them as “The Gold Standard”. This act is so good they were even engaged by David Gilmour to perform at his 50th birthday celebration!

The band has spent a long time getting to this level; the years have been invested in getting things right: the sound, the feel, the experience. While the Daily Telegraph rightly described them as being at “the top of the tribute band tree”, the journey has been a long one and began in 1988 in Adelaide, South Australia.

They eventually decided to relocate to the UK in pursuit of greater success. It was here they began to take off, and became the first Pink Floyd tribute band to tour the UK in 1993, starting off with the first International Pink Floyd Fan Convention at Wembley Convention Centre. They have been hailed by various sources as one of the best Pink Floyd cover bands and continue to tour the world.

McCoy on Movies: JACKASS FOREVER

February 5, 2022 By Tabari McCoy

Jackass Forever brings gross out humor to its apex

“Oh this is going to hurt … But that’s what you paid to see!” “Danger” Kenneth Ehren McGhehey prepares to come face to face – literally – with a venomous friend in a scene from JACKASS FOREVER. Credit: © 2022 Paramount Pictures. All rights reserved.

WATCH THE TRAILER HERE:

DIRECTOR: Jeff Tremaine
KEY CAST MEMBERS: Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Dave England, Wee Man, Danger Ehren, Preston Lacy, Sean ‘Poopies’ McInerney, Zach Holmes, Eric Manaka … and introducing Jasper and Rachel Wolfson
WEB SITE: https://www.jackassmovie.com/

THE BACK STORY: Really – you want a back story for a Jackass movie? How’s this: The old crew is back again and up to their old, crazy, disgusting habits … And they’ve brought a few celebrity friends along for the (final?) ride.

THE REVIEW: Have you ever seen a Jackass movie before? If the answer is “no,” you may not be ready for the boatload of full frontal male nudity, the scenes where PETA would not be concerned for the health or safety of the animals or insects involved or the amount of fluids that factor heavily into much of the 96 minutes on film. In short, this is not a film for anyone not yet old enough to drive, your older grandparents who prefer thought the Smothers Brothers were too dirty back in the 1960s or anyone that you are worried about having to show strong moral fibers around.
If body parts being repeatedly being smashed, male gentalia in general and fluid o’plenty doesn’t bother you, well … You will likely find yourself equally grossed out and crying laughing at the crazy, ridiculous things you see happening in high definition in front of you on screen. (Thank your lucky stars the film is not in 3-D!) You’re going to get Johnny Knoxville and company do their best to do their worst, succeeding more often than not. There’s even a fitting tribute to the late Ryan Dunn at the end, which, for a film that is probably thisclose to being a NC-17 affair, has more heart than you’d expect as you can tell this bunch of jackasses is having fun injuring each other some 20 plus years later and counting.
If this is the last Jackass film, it goes out with a literal bang all its fans will love … And make its detractors surely head home and pray for their souls.

5 Must Attend Fundraisers This February

February 2, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

The fact that Dayton was recognized on the Travelocity list of  25 Most Giving Cities in the U.S. is no surprise to us at Dayton937.com.  Having put together the most comprehensive list of charity events in the region for the last 13 years, we’ve seen how many people are willing to give back and help others in this community.   We’ve got a list of area fish fry’s that make a difference to so many and each week,  Old Scratch Pizza has  Cones for a Cause Program that has raised over $30,000 dollars for area charity’s in the past year and Warped Wing Brewery, Dewey’s and Milano’s,  are just a couple of the  local businesses that have established fundraising programs.

It’s hard to choose which events to support each month, but here are suggestions for February Fundraisers:

February 12 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
(this event was moved ahead a week due to the weather)

Lock 27 Brewing 1035 S. Main Street, Centerville, OH

Thousands of undie runners in cities all across the U.S. come together, whether it be in-person or virtually, to support those affected by NF, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and affects 1 in every 3,000 births. Cupid’s Undie Run kicks off with drinking and dancing, then we jog it out with a mile(ish) run and end it all with an epic dance party!

February 19 & 2o  @ 9:00 am – 7:00 pm

Once in a Blue Moon February Book Fair!

Montgomery County Fair & Fairgrounds, Dayton OH 645 Infirmary Road, Dayton, OH

Due to the overwhelming generosity of our donors over the past two years, we are having a second Book Fair in 2022!  We’ll have a smaller amount of books this time (no media, puzzles or games) and they are unsearched and unsorted!  This will mean a less complicated setup for us and more of a treasure hunt for book shoppers!

WHO WE ARE Opens Friday at The Neon

February 2, 2022 By Jonathan McNeal

On Friday, we will open one of the most powerful documentaries I have seen in a long time – WHO WE ARE: A CHRONICLE OF RACISM IN AMERICA. I think this film should be part of a national curriculum, and I hope you’ll help me spread the word about this important engagement. LICORICE PIZZA continues to be our biggest draw – so it will stick around. PARALLEL MOTHERS will hold for a second week, and DRIVE MY CAR is coming back for three more encore screenings this weekend.

Academy Award nominations are coming out on Feb. 8, and we’re pretty sure we know a couple contenders coming down the pike that haven’t screened at THE NEON. So starting next Friday, you’ll have a chance to see Jane Campion’s THE POWER OF THE DOG(starring Benedict Cumberbatch) and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s feature directorial debut THE LOST DAUGHTER (starring Olivia Coleman) on our big screen.

On Sunday, February 13, we will have our first ever FREE POPCORN DAY! Whether you’re just passing by or joining us for a movie, any beverage purchase starting at Noon until closing on Feb. 13 will get you a FREE SMALL POPCORN (one free popcorn per customer). You can stop by and grab a beer “to go” before you kick-off your pregame at home…or grab a soda for your screening of THE POWER OF THE DOG – either way, the popcorn will be on us!

NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENTS:
Synopsis for WHO WE ARE: A CHRONICLE OF RACISM IN AMERICA: Rated “100% Fresh” on rottentomatoes and the winner of numerous awards at film festivals across the country, this film is a Must-See! “Interweaving lecture, personal anecdotes, interviews, and shocking revelations, in WHO WE ARE: A CHRONICLE OF RACISM IN AMERICA, criminal defense/civil rights lawyer Jeffery Robinson draws a stark timeline of anti-Black racism in the United States, from slavery to the modern myth of a post-racial America.” (Sony Classics) Robert Daniels of THE LOS ANGELES TIMES wrote, “Through Robinson’s fervor for truth, Emily and Sarah Kunstler’s WHO WE ARE chronicles how such heartaches, when observed on a personal level, remind us how knowing the unchangeable past can still improve the alterable future for the better.” Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
CONTINUING IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA
To read more about the few films that are still available, please visit our WEBSITE. Here’s a LINK with a video I made about how Virtual Cinema works. Our Virtual Cinema is in its last days (at least for now), but you still have a chance to check out a couple titles from home.
UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENT:
We’re set for 2 special screenings of The West End’s ANYTHING GOES – set for March 27 & 30, and tickets are already on sale! What I’m even more excited about is that WSU’s Joe Deer, who was in the 1987 Broadway revival of ANYTHING GOES and has directed productions of this show several times, will introduce the screening on Wednesday, March 30. This is a filmed version of last summer’s West End production starring the luminous Sutton Foster. Don’t miss this Cole Porter treat on the big screen! Tickets are $12.50 and available now at our box office or on-line! More details can be found on our website. Click the image below to watch a trailer.
THE NEON wants to keep our Staff and Patrons safe! Our Board of Directors has sought advisement from Combined Health Dayton & Montgomery County and the Center for Disease Control…we’re also looking at other arthouse cinemas in major markets across the country. We have recently made one minor change to our policy. Masks are now required for all guests age 2 and higher until further notice.  All patrons aged 12 and over will be required to present proof of vaccination with a photo ID or a negative COVID-19 test from the last 72 hours. (Self-reported vaccination records not verified by a third party health care provider are not acceptable. Test results must include name, test result, and a timestamp within the past 72 hours.) We will continue to monitor the community’s health data and amend our policies based on guidance.
Please stay tuned to THE NEON’s website for the latest updates. A couple helpful hints!! Take a single picture of your photo ID and your vaccination card in the same shot. You’ll be able to flash this photo at our box office, and that will work as proof enough for us. If you have a smart phone, you could also download the app that most folks in NYC are using to get into movies, Broadway shows and restaurants – NYCCOVIDSAFE. This app will have you take a photo of your ID and your vaccine card – and it saves you from having to hunt for a photo on your phone. I downloaded it, and it’s very easy to use.
Please remember – We ask that you arrive before showtime to allow for checking everyone in before the auditorium gets dark!
