Local Pizzeria Wins $15,000 For Their Community Service

October 31, 2023 By Dayton937

Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory, a beloved inner-city Dayton, OH pizzeria serving the local community for over 30 years, has been honored with a $15,000 national grand prize sponsorship in recognition of its outstanding contributions to the Dayton community. The award was granted as part of the 2nd Annual Great Pizza Give Back program sponsored by Hillshire Farm® Brand. The program invites local neighborhood pizzerias to share their stories about their community involvement for a chance to win one of 11 sponsorships – one for $15,000 and ten for $2,000. This sponsorship funding enables pizzerias to continue impacting and improving their local communities.

“This year, the Great Pizza Give Back generated so many amazing entries that it was difficult to select the winners, but we landed on several excellent choices,” shared (Bruce Engelmann, Director of Foodservice Category Marketing, Hillshire Farm® Brand). “Each entry featured an inspiring story of commitment for enriching their community and a passion for making a real difference.”

For more than three decades, Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory has been a steadfast supporter of their community, engaging in a wide range of philanthropic initiatives. These efforts include sponsoring little league and youth sports teams, offering half-price pizzas to local teachers, and regularly donating pizzas to Daybreak, a local shelter for runaways, Friends of Addicts, an organization for friends and family of recovering addicts, and locally organized efforts for violence prevention programs.

Their dedication to supporting first responders and fostering neighborhood connections through events and promotions like their “Family/Neighbor Pizza Night” has been unwavering for over three decades.  (Buy one, get one for any  14″, or 16″ PIZZA
Mondays only. Carry out only.)
In addition to their generous contributions, Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory has been a model of sustainability, having installed solar panels to meet part of their energy needs and volunteering to educate others on solar energy adoption.

Furthermore, the pizzeria’s commitment to education extends to local high school students, as they have been providing pizzas for after-school sales, enabling students to raise funds for their annual prom. Their involvement in neighborhood clean-ups and holiday spirit through pizza gift certificates for decorated homes during the festive season demonstrates their dedication to fostering community unity.

“We are incredibly excited to have won,” said Bill Daniels, Owner of Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory. “Our mission has always been to serve not only delicious pizza but also to make a positive impact on the neighborhoods we serve in Dayton. This recognition validates and further enables our ongoing commitment to community support.”

The $15,000 grand prize will be put to good use as Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory plans to continue and increase its current contributions. They have already used some of the sponsorship award to establish a “Doughlarship” program to provide scholarships at Sinclair Community College to local high school students, and they plan to expand their partnership with local food banks and churches to provide pizza and food for the homeless, and further enhance their support for the Daybreak runaway shelter. Daniels intends to collaborate with local neighborhood development agencies to further support efforts to get people together to work toward bettering their community.

In addition to Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory, there were 10 runner-up winners in the 2nd Annual Great Pizza Give Back program, each receiving $2,000 in recognition of their outstanding community service efforts.

Historic Germantown Restaurant Under New Ownership

October 30, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Bryce & Sheree Henson, are the new owners of The Florentine in Germantown, as of 11am today.  No strangers to business ownership, the couple purchased The Creamery at Market & Main about 3 1/2 years ago, which serves up coffee, espresso, muffins and ice cream from Young’s Jersey Dairy. About a year after that acquistion they purchased  the tanning salon, Tan & Co.  And for about a year they started talking about The Florentine.

And as of today they’ve made that happen.  Sheree, who grow up in Germantown had found memories of going there for special occasions with her family.  She and Bryce, who’ve been married for 20 years, love the historic past of the Florentine, which was opened 1814  by Philip Gunckel, the founder of Germantown, to welcome travelers as they passed through Germantown. They are looking to build on the nostalgia and history of this business.  They’d love to hear from you if you have pictures or stories of your visits there over the years.

The Henson family

With eight children it’s just not possible for them to be hands on full time in the restaurant so they’ve hired  Nick Paglione as their general manager.  He’ll work on tweaking the menu and elevating some of the dishes.  Bryce says he’s a huge steak fan, so they’ll continue to have great steaks, but look for a few different preparations to be added. He says his wife wife has added a fantastic Brussel sprout dish to the menu and they will also be adding a lobster mac and cheese.   They will also use their expertise from The Creamery to add some coffee drinks and cocktails to the menu, including an Affogato-an espresso served over ice cream.

Other changes coming include removing some of the tables from the bar side and adding some leather couches around the fireplace and having a custom made community table built to add to that space to create a warm , welcoming cozy tavern feel.  Other plans include adding a large patio this spring.

Leaf Peeping is Open!

October 29, 2023 By GreatMiamiRiverway

Nature is still open for business, and there is no better time for you to get out of doors than the Autumn season. The  Great Miami Riverway has some of Ohio’s best fall foliage. This fall, you might be looking for fewer crowds or somewhere new to explore. We offer four places for you to visit. Let us know on social media your favorite place in the Riverway to see the leaves while they show their colors. #GreatMiamiRiverway

You can walk, bike, run, or hike at the easy trails of Crain’s Run Nature Park

With wide scenic views, this 34 acre forested park borders the Great Miami River and the Great Miami Recreation Trail. Most of the park is forested, and includes hiking trails that wind through the woods while the remainder is mown parkland. There are several shelter houses for picnics, and a four acre pond where you can fish. Adjoining the park property, just across the road at the south end of the park, is a restored canal lock that was built in 1829 as part of the Miami-Erie Canal system.

Hike the trails at Shawnee Lookout to take in the amazing scenic vistas of the Great Miami River valley.

Shawnee Lookout, located in Hamilton County, is a great place to take in nature any time of year. The park is well known for its historical Springhouse School and Log Cabin as well as its Native American archaeological earthworks. The park’s nature trails, including the 1.3-mile Blue Jacket, 2.0-mile Little Turtle and the 1.4-mile Miami Fort trail, offer spectacular views of the Ohio River and Great Miami River valleys. The 4.3 miles of former golf cart paths are also open for biking, hiking, rolling or strolling. The park also features picnic areas, a playground and boat access to the Great Miami River. The new Riverway poster features the view from Shawnee Lookout.

Grab your hiking shoes and climb to the top of the Miamisburg Mound – one of two tallest adena mounds in the US

Miamisburg Mound offers an easy 30-minute visit and the opportunity to see one of the two largest conical mounds in eastern North America. The mound is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is 65 feet tall and 800 feet in circumference, containing 54,000 cubic yards of earth. The mound is visible from several miles away because it stands atop a 100-foot high ridge above the Great Miami River. Steps have been built to the top observation platform, where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the area.

Hike Charleston Falls Nature Preserve to see beautiful waterfalls and wildflowers.

Any time of year is a good time to visit Charleston Falls. As summer fades into fall, watch the lush green forest explode with color. The Falls at Charleston Falls can rightly be called a “Miniature Niagara” because its rock strata is the same as Niagara Falls. Charleston Falls Preserve is the most visited Park District property in Miami County with more than 216 acres of prairie and forests. This picturesque park is the perfect place to hike and view wildlife or seek out uncommon plants such as wild columbine, walking fern, purple cliff break and rock honeysuckle grace the limestone faces of the surrounding gorge.

Find Your Way – to the beautiful fall colors of the Great Miami Riverway!

Clink, Sip & Savor at Uptown Centerville’s Newest Spot!

October 26, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Rhonda & Matt Hiatt’s dream is coming true!  Tomorrow night they open Meridien Uptown in Centerville. They describe it “as  a place where community and culture intersect to create unforgettable experiences…”

They’ve totally remodeled the old Sweeney’s Seafood, opened it up and given it an upscale elegance.   Rhonda says they created an environment where they can bring all the tastes of the world from their travels together and share with friends and new friends

The runway filled with small bites tonight

Their food menu will rotate with small bites, salads and sandwiches. Here’s the opening menu:

They’ll take reservations for tables but the runways, which seats about 30 will always be open seating.  They seat about 130 guests, in addition to patio seating when weather cooperates.

With a fully stocked bar, I noticed lots of high end bourbons, Matt shared they’d “be a great spot for when you didn’t want to drive downtown to The Century Bar.” The cocktail menu will change frequently, paired to match their bites menu.

Kayla Thorp is their Special Events coordinator and you’ll want to reach out to her to rent the space for private events when they aren’t open.
