Steak and Sangria Smash at Lily’s

August 31, 2024 By Dayton937

Chef Don invites you to the  “Steak and Sangria Smash! I’m excited for the menu! I’m excited to cook outside on our beautiful patio! I’m excited for the interaction I get to have with our awesome guests for the party! I’m excited for the variety of Sangrias that Emily and our bar manager, Katie Mae have been working hard on to craft for this event! And obviously I’m super excited for the steak!”

Ticket includes a gorgeous 4-course meal with a 14 ounce grilled to order ribeye, tax and tip are included in the $90 price.. Also offering optional sangria pairings, as well as Lily’s cocktails & full bar.

This time we’re doing my personal favorite steak, bone-in ribeye! It’s making me hungry just typing bone-in ribeye! Ha! A large part of my chef background was spent in fine dining steakhouses for years. It’s nice when I can apply that learned experience and share it in a different setting like this! It’s pretty cool to offer something that you would have to go to a super upscale restaurant in a more casual vibrant fun setting! It makes everything feel extra special! The high end craft and care, anywhere! I love it! Emily and the other managers will be sharing more information leading up to the event. I really look forward to this and I hope I get to see a lot of friends come out! I’ll be setting up a grill and cooking at your tables!”

Sinclair Community College’s Fine Art Faculty Exhibition

August 31, 2024 By Dayton937

Each fall, the Burnell R. Roberts Triangle Gallery, the Works on Paper Gallery, as well as other spaces around Building 13 display work from the faculty and adjunct faculty of Sinclair’s Art Department.

The Burnell R. Roberts Triangle Gallery traditionally features one faculty member, and this year will exhibit works by Professor Mark Echtner. Echtner’s brightly colored paintings begin by using old paintings turned upside down or random shapes and colors that then inform his abstracted figures and the spaces they occupy. Narratives of daily social interactions and inclusive communities run through this body of work.

There will be a virtual artist talk with Echtner over Zoom on August 30, 2024, at 12:00 pm and an open house reception September 5 from 4:30 pm-6:00 pm in Building 13’s 4th Floor Atrium. Visit Sinclair.edu/ArtGalleries for further details.

The Fine Art Faculty Exhibition will be on display from August 12 through September 13, 2024. Gallery spaces are located on the third and fourth floor of building 13 (located at W. Fifth and S. Perry Streets in downtown Dayton). The galleries are free and open to the public from 8:00 am–6:00 pm Monday–Friday and 9:00 am–12:00 pm Saturdays.

Bike Miami Valley to suspend operation of LINK Dayton Bike Share Program.

August 30, 2024 By Guest Contributor

LINK Dayton Bike Share will suspend operations this fall (September 30th). LINK Dayton Bike share is a program ran by Bike Miami Valley, a non-profit cycling advocacy organization.
Bike share systems across the nation are facing unique challenges that have proved difficult for these donor funded systems to navigate, including rising costs, operational challenges, rising expenses for insurance and a lack of insurance providers willing to cover bike share programs. These have also impacted the LINK Dayton Bike Share system and are major contributors to the decision to suspend operations.
LINK Dayton Bike Share was launched in May of 2015 in the spirit of community collaboration between and has served the Dayton core for 9 years. 120,665 Trips to date with 66,790 total unique users. LINK Dayton Bike Share was created to make biking more accessible for all, provide “last mile” transportation throughout the urban core, as well as improve livability, and provide a healthy, environmentally friendly mode of transportation.
Downtown Dayton has changed drastically since LINK Dayton Bike Share was first introduced, with increased housing, entertainment, restaurants on the positive side with less workforce active during working hours.
LINK Dayton Bike Share sees annually: over 50K rides in recent years, with 5K unique users and currently has 38 stations throughout downtown Dayton, nearby neighborhoods, and the University of Dayton campus.
The LINK system has historically been supported by donors and sponsorships, with only a small portion of revenue coming from ridership.
We want to show gratitude for all the Founding Sponsors of Link: Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Bonbright Distributors and New Belgium Brewing Company, CareSource, City of Dayton, Five Rivers MetroParks, Montgomery County, PNC, Premier Health, Public Health – Dayton and Montgomery County’s Creating Healthy Communities Program, Sinclair College and the University of Dayton for their support.
Bike Miami Valley’s mission “to advocate, promote, and create opportunities for all forms of bicycling in the Miami Valley” will continue as it has since the organization’s founding in 1979. The Regional Chapters will continue to conduct advocacy and events. Bike Miami Valley will continue to support the Miami Valley Cycling Summit, held next, in Springfield in 2025.
Bike Miami Valley and LINK are currently open to other possibilities for the continuation of the LINK Dayton Bike Share system, including a transition to another community partner.

happenSTANCE:  An Art Exhibition featuring Jamele Wright Sr. and Amy Deal

August 29, 2024 By Dayton937

Jamele Wright Sr. is an Atlanta-based artist originally from Dayton, OH, and Amy Deal, a Dayton-based artist who has called Dayton home for the past 36 years, will showcase their work together in the upcoming exhibition, happenStance.

The two artists met by chance this past spring in South Carolina at an art opening at Summerville’s Public Works Art Center. Their immediate connection, coupled with their shared roots in Dayton, led to a collaborative opportunity. Wright expressed his interest in exhibiting in Dayton, and Deal, who had an exhibition scheduled, extended an invitation for him to join her.

happenSTANCE

DSA Gallery, 48 High Street, Dayton

Thursday, August 29, 5-8:00 PM

Friday, August 30, 5-8:00 PM (artist talk 6:00)

Saturday, August 31, 1-4:00 PM (workshop 11:00 by reservation)

Jamele Wright Sr. (born 1970 Dayton, Ohio) is a mixed media artist whose work explores the Black American vernacular experience. Using found materials, Georgia red clay, and Dutch Wax cloth, Wright delves into themes of family, tradition, and the spiritual and material relationship between Africa and the South. His process is influenced by Hip Hop’s practice of sampling, remixes cultural elements to create narratives reflecting the African diaspora and the Great Migration.

Wright earned his B.A. in Art History from Georgia State University and him M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, NY. He has participated in residencies at MASS MoCA and the Gibbes Museum.

Amy Deal (b. 1966, Cranberry Prairie, OH) grew up in a rural setting, collecting wildflowers to create pigments and using art to enhance her surroundings. She holds a BFA in Visual Communications from Kent State University and has worked as a creative director on corporate branding and advertising campaigns. After taking time off to raise her children, Deal renewed her focus on painting. Her current series, Forest Bathing, inspired by the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, emphasizes nature’s calming effects. Deal has recently completed residencies in South Carolina and Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Elks to Honor Kirk Herbstreit Prior To Kickoff Friday

August 28, 2024 By Guest Contributor

This Friday, right before the kickoff of the highly anticipated St. Xavier football game, there will be a special recognition ceremony to honor one of our most distinguished alumni, Kirk Herbstreit. A true Centerville legend, Kirk has carried the spirit of our community to the national stage and become one of the most respected voices in sports.

Kirk’s journey began here at Centerville High School, where he was a standout quarterback for the Elks under the guidance of the legendary coach, Bob Gregg. His dedication and leadership on the field were evident even then, qualities that would come to define his career. After high school, Kirk played for The Ohio State University, where his hard work and determination on the field were matched by his commitment to excellence off the field.

These values have guided him throughout his career as a sports analyst, where he continues to be a trusted and influential figure, bringing his insight, passion, and integrity to millions of fans across the country. But Kirk’s impact extends beyond sports. He has always remembered his roots, serving as a tremendous ambassador for Centerville High School and our community. Whether he’s sharing stories from his time here or mentoring young athletes, Kirk embodies the values that make Centerville special: Attitude and Effort.

We are incredibly proud to welcome Kirk Herbstreit back to Centerville and even prouder to announce that the Mayor of Centerville, Mr. Brooks Compton, has officially proclaimed Friday, August 30th, as “Kirk Herbstreit Day.” During the ceremony, Mayor Compton will present Kirk with a Proclamation and a special coin to commemorate this special day.

We are honored to call Kirk Herbstreit one of our own, and we look forward to celebrating his contributions to our school and community this Friday. Tickets for this game are available online (no fees) or you can pay cash at the gate, $9. We strongly recommend the digital option to avoid long waits in line. We are anticipating an overflow crowd at Centerville Stadium for this much anticipated matchup.

August 28, 2024 By Dayton937

Five Guys is excited to announce a new official menu item inspired by a popular menu hack. The Patty Melt, which combines a grilled cheese, juicy patty and the toppings of your choice, will officially join the menu at select Five Guys locations starting September 1, 2024.

Known for its customizable burgers and fresh-cut fries, Five Guys allows customers to enjoy unlimited flavor combinations. The Patty Melt evolved from customer requests and offers a delicious new way to enjoy the classic Five Guys taste.

“We’re thrilled to bring the Patty Melt to our menu at test locations,” said Jerry Murrell, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder. “Our customers are integral to the Five Guys story. We hope that the addition of the Patty Melt to the menu makes them feel like part of the Five Guys family, too.”

The Patty Melt will be officially available on the menu at 194 Five Guys locations. However, customers can still order a Patty Melt at any location nationwide. It has always been an option through customizations, but now ordering is easier for customers.  Before this test, it was known as a grilled cheese and add a patty, but now all stores know the name.

Duck Pin Bowling League Starting

August 25, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

On Par Entertainment is hosting an 8 week Duckpin Bowling League that kicks off Tuesday, August 27th at 6:30pm. Gather your friends and family to form a team of 4 to compete in this laid back du league! Substitutions are allowed. The league runs for 8 weeks and costs just $1 per person each week. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 teams at the end of the league.

Duckpin bowling is a variation of ten-pin bowling, with the biggest difference between the two games being the size of the ball and pins used to play. In duckpin bowling, players roll a ball slightly larger than a softball down the alley to knock down the pins. The pins used in duckpin bowling are smaller and lighter than the pins used in regular bowling games, making it more difficult for players to earn a strike.

Duckpin bowling is a ten-frame game where the goal is to knock down as many pins as possible with the fewest number of rolls. Each player gets three rolls per frame in an attempt to knock down all their pins. The catch, however, is that the size of the ball and pins makes it a challenge for players to knock down multiple pins at once. The point system in duckpin bowling is similar to traditional ten-pin bowling in that if a player knocks down all the pins in a single roll, they earn a strike. Players receive ten points for each pin they knock down in a turn, and if a player knocks down all the pins in the first two rolls of their turn, it is scored as a spare.
