Grand Opening of Wright Dunbar Cigars Friday

October 31, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Wright Dunbar neighbors Jeff Jackson and Dallas Webster have talked about opening a cigar bar for a while and this Friday their dreams become a reality as the doors will open to Wright Dunbar Cigars on West Third Street.

Owners Dallas Webster & Jeff Jackson

We appreciate that they took some time to answer our questions and share them with you here:

Why a cigar bar?

DW:  Why Not?   But Seriously, our research has shown that the cigar sales growth rates are 4% to 8% over the next 5 years.  But when you factor in memberships, private events, pairing events and exclusive experiences, the growth rate increases 6% to 10% over the next 5 years, leveling out at about 7% for 10 years.
JJ:  I have been a cigar smoker for about 9 years now and in the culture for the last 4 or 5. This business fits, not only my interests, but my lifestyle. I have learned to understand that if you love what you do, it’s never really “work.” When I decided to leave corporate employment behind, over 15 years ago, I never wanted to “work” again, and this is the next step in that journey.

What can people expect when they visit?
JJ: Our patrons and members can expect an elevated experience at Wright Dunbar Cigars. We want you to feel like you have been transported to a destination unique all in itself. Classy, comfortable, sophisticated, familiar, entertaining, and enjoyable. We welcome all cigar smokers from first timers, looking how to engage, to afficionados with a mature palette who knows what they want and expect.
DW:  When people come to Wright Dunbar Cigars, they can expect a unique experience.  When creating our space we collaborated with uCreative in Miamisburg Oh, to create a unique design using earth tones and natural finishes.  Our General Contractor Terence Wright of Tri-Tech in Centerville Oh,  extended our design with unique lighting, custom wood finishes and implementation of our concept.  We have exposed brick surfaces, wood flooring, leather seating and a state of the art smoke removal system.
What does membership mean, how much and what is included?
DW: We are currently in our innaugral membership period, with memberships ranging from $1000 to $1500.  Of course membership has it privileges and include – a humidor locker for cigar storage, discounts on cigars, accessories, events and private rental.  We have an exclusive member VIP area on the 2nd floor with secret and private entrances.  We encourage everyone to take advantage of our inagural membership drive before it ends.

JJ: Membership means everything! The best features of our lounge revolves around members benefit’s. We will certainly reward our inaugral members; those who took “the leap of faith” and made a commitment to us! They will be who we will remember,  value, and honor as our business grows and thrives.

Can people rent out the space for private events?

DW: Yes, we will have a 2 tier event rental with members having reduced rental rates.  Our theater room can be configured as a conference room for corporate offsite meetings.
Anything else you’d like to share?
DW:  When creating our space, upon entering, we wanted our guest to say, “Am I in Dayton”.  and our answer is “Yes you are”.  Jeff and I have an ongoing fun debate where I say we have the best Cigar lounge in the State of Ohio… LOL.   but seriously we have made a substantial investment and it’s for our members and guest.  On Weekends we plan to offer valet parking, escort by staff to our cigar humidors, assistance with cigar selection, and even cutting and lighting should our customers want that.
JJ: We want people to explore something they may not have experienced here in Dayton, OH. We are very fortunate to be in an incredibly unique space, designed for a great smoking experience. We are in a historically valuable part of town that is benefiting from a surging renaissance. We want people all over the Miami Valley to experience the “big city” right here in our hometown.

DAI Exhibit Highlights Two Classic Animated Features

October 29, 2024 By Dayton937

Just in time for the holidays, enjoy these nostalgic exhibitions highlighting two beloved classics that continue to influence the art of animation at The Dayton Art Institute (DAI). Merry Grinchmas: Art of Dr. Seuss’ Holiday Classic & (B)ART! America’s Funniest Animated Family, on view now through January 19, 2025. Just in time for the holidays, enjoy these nostalgic exhibitions highlighting two beloved classics that continue to influence the art of animation.

View original drawings of Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and Chuck Jones, who brought Dr. Seuss’ beloved holiday tale to life in the 1966 animated special How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, then laugh alongside Homer, Marge, Lisa, Maggie and Bart as you experience the original handmade animation cels of the acclaimed series.

“The art displayed in our newest exhibitions explores the significant influence animation has had in pop culture and the worlds of art, entertainment and business,” said DAI Head Curator & Curatorial Affairs Director Jerry N. Smith. “Animation art is beloved worldwide, and for many of us, this medium is our introduction to art. This work showcases how in each animated classic, thousands of individual artworks come together to tell a story and create a larger singular work.”

In 1966, the animation of Chuck Jones brought to life Dr. Seuss’ treasured 1957 children’s bookHow the Grinch Stole Christmas! The animated story is a true television classic, with generations tuning in annually to watch the story of redemption with the despicable Grinch, the sweet Cindy Lou Who and the innocent dog Max. The exhibition Merry Grinchmas: Art of Dr. Seuss’ Holiday Classic features original cel art used in the cartoon’s production, along with concept drawings by Jones (famous for Looney Tunes) and those by Dr. Seuss.

(B)ART! America’s Funniest Animated Family showcases the often-irreverent antics of Homer, Marge, Lisa, Maggie and Bart—alongside many other unforgettable figures from the longest-running animated series on American television. Since its debut in 1989, there have been more than 770 episodes. Initially crafted through traditional ink-and-paint techniques on transparent acetate cels, the first 13 seasons (1989–2002) were produced by hand before transitioning to cost-effective digital animation. These hand-drawn cels are featured in the exhibition. In the early seasons elements, now vital to the series, were created, including the famous sofa and living room set used to open each episode, which is replicated at the DAI, allowing guests the chance to truly enter the fictional world of Springfield.

Fun and colorful, these two exhibitions showcase the art of illustration. A family-friendly and nostalgic outing, guests will enjoy more than 400 works of original art, as well as interactive sensory stations, educational resources and photo opportunities.

“In addition to learning about the art of animation and illustration, those attending our newest special exhibitions can expect a joyful, playful, and nostalgic experience,” said DAI Director & President Michael R. Roediger. “This artwork was created to bring a smile to your face and brighten your day. We’re excited to offer each guest the chance to slip away from any of life’s stresses and spend time reconnecting with characters they know and love. These two exhibitions are fun, colorful and truly memorable.”

Several related programs will be offered in conjunction with the Merry Grinchmas: Art of Dr. Seuss’ Holiday Classic & (B)ART! America’s Funniest Animated Family. These include:

MIKEE HUBER – INTUITIVE ABSTRACT PAINTER

October 28, 2024 By Bill Franz

I ran into Mikee Huber at Front Street, Dayton’s largest community of artists and artisans.  I asked her for a photo and a short interview.  Mikee posed in front of some work by Mike Elsass.  I thought that was fitting because the first paintings I ever saw by Mikee reminded me of some of Mike’s work.

That was my “Controlled Chaos” series” Mikee told me, “where I used oil paints that flowed into each other.  I painted those with my hand.  To many viewers they seemed completely abstract but they were inspired by things I had seen at work – microscopic views of aerospace materials during testing.”

I also remembered seeing some of Mikee’s work that was geometric – completely different from the first work I had seen.  I asked if those pieces related to maps of various locations.

“That’s my connection series.  I was trying to use vibrant colors and intersecting lines to show the diversity of urban life and the bonds that tie individuals and communities together.”

“My website (https://mikeehuber.square.site/)  shows my different series.  I like working in series, taking one idea and pushing it as far as I can, and then moving on to another idea, another series.  Although I do find myself returning to some of the series again and again.”

“Friday, November 1 from 5-9pm I’m exhibiting a brand new series at The Betty Gallery at Front Street (1001 Second Street, B-C Door, Third Floor).  It’s called “Finding My Way Downeast”.    It features paintings inspired by my time as artist in residence in Maine.   My work in Maine was made possible in part by an Artist Opportunity Grant funded by the Montgomery County Arts & Cultural District and administered by Culture Works.”

I asked Mikee if she could give me a preview of her show and she shared this piece.

“The title of this piece is a haiku, which will be printed on the back.”

peach and pink embrace,

water and sky dance in light–

where land meets the sea.

“You can see that this work is different from my other work, but there is one thing that’s similar.  I’ve always made abstract paintings inspired by things I have seen.   With my first series I was inspired by things seen through a microscope.  Here the inspiration is things seen as I walked along the Maine seacoast.”

On her phone Mikee showed me a few other photos of works in her show.  I asked about the red door.

“There was an actual door in the woods behind my studio in Maine.  It was unattached to anything,  just standing by itself in the woods.  For days I walked past it and then I took the time to walk through.  For some reason, walking through that door caused me to look at my surroundings differently and then to paint in a different way.”  The title of this piece is

red door in the woods,

I step through, leaving behind

old plan–art unfolds.

Here’s one more

ocean’s vibrant dance–

clouds paint ripples on the sea,

nature’s vivid song.

I visited Mikee’s studio once when she was on Crane Street.  I asked where her studio was today.

“Like a lot of artists, during Covid I created a studio in my home.  It’s not as much space as I’d like, but we’re working on a plan to build a major addition.  The new space would give me my dream studio.   When it’s finished, which may be a few years off, you and your camera are invited.”

TheatreLab’s SMASH HIT ‘Lizzie’ is no AX-ident!!

October 27, 2024 By Joshua Stucky

Hurried…anxiety driven…and commanding, ‘Lizzie’ now playing at Mudlick Tavern’s Second Floor, has thrust TheatreLab back in the spotlight! DDN’s Russell Florence put it best…‘a wonderfully raw, vocally-impressive spooky season production…’ The show is directed by Mackensie King, and I had the pleasure of interviewing her about the show’s high praise!!

D9: Mackensie…you have a hit on your hands!! Why did you choose ‘Lizzie‘ in the first place??

MK: I have always loved horror and all things spooky. What drew me to this version of her story is how grounded and real it feels. The question I asked myself at the end of listening to it the first time was: is she GUILTY? Not did she do it, but are the things this woman went through about to justify what she did to escape them. Plus, the music for this show is unlike any other theatre show. It’s true rock/ metal and allows the cast to really show off their vocal chops.

D9: Timely, considering the Menendez Bros. story of late! There is one thing that audiences are 100% on…your cast! What can you tell me???

MK: The words “high octane” come to mind when I think about this cast. The vocals are absolutely top notch and SO full of power. Under all of that, there is true connection to the material. Sam Evans as Lizzie brings such understanding and sympathy to the character and she really makes you want for Lizzie to gain freedom. Allie Haines as Emma is so fun to watch because she is really finding how it feels to have to been the head of a family at such a young age. MJ Janovich is taking Alice in a direction I’ve never seen with youthfulness and hurt (and just wait until you hear her belt) and Leah Fox is HILARIOUS and terrifying as the banshee, Bridget.

D9: Strong ladies, indeed!! One thing I know TheatreLab is trying to do is incorporate more of a community feel in their productions! How did the whole Mudlick idea emerge?

MK: We really wanted to focus on bringing the arts TO Dayton. Unique venues really bring the audience in to the art and allow them to become participants. We have been neighbors with Mudlick for years and we wanted to partner with an incredible company. The show has a true rock show feel in the industrial space and Mudlick is curating specialty cocktails for the shows!

D9: I hear the cocktails have been a smash!! Such a great idea. I always say when people leave a show, they should be left with something…a thought, a feeling…..what are you hoping folks get out of Lizzie???

MK: I hope people walk away with 2 things.   1. That the talent in Dayton is worth investing in. The talent that you will see on that stage is worth keeping around. And 2: Women are angry and we have a voice and it’s about time you all listen.

D9: I, for one, hear you!!! I want to reiterate that this town is overflowing with talented folks!! Thanks for mentioning that! And thanks for being such an asset to Dayton’s theatre community Mackensie! So, what about this mysterious ‘Season’ TheatreLab is keeping close???

MK: Everyone is so excited. Keep Your Eyes Peeled….the announcement is coming soon!

You can catch ‘Lizzie’ on its remaining dates….

November 1 & 2 at 8:00pm. November 3 at 2:00pm.

Jimmy John’s Introduces Pickle Sandwiches

October 27, 2024 By Dayton937

Jimmy John’s revealed its latest menu item, the Picklewich, will be available nationwide from Oct. 28 through Nov. 14 in two variations stuffed inside a hollowed-out pickle.

The Vito Picklewich has salami, capocollo, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion and oil and vinegar (like Jimmy John’s classic Vito sandwich) to create an Italian sub experience in a pickle. The Turkey Picklewich layers some of the same toppings (lettuce, tomato and onion) with turkey and provolone.

Picklewiches with Pickle Jimmy Chips

To complement the Picklewich, Jimmy John’s is bringing back the fan-favorite Pickle Jimmy Chips. The salty, sour, dilly and delicious pickle flavor is added to classic Jimmy Chips that are made with real salt, 100% peanut oil, and thick sliced potatoes.

On National Sandwich Day, November 3, Jimmy John’s is offering Freaky Fast Reward Members 50% off the brand-new Picklewich when they purchase any 8-inch sandwich. Sign up to become a Freaky Fast Rewards member and start earning rewards and unlocking achievements at jimmyjohns.com/rewards.

Don’t worry if pickles aren’t your thing! Starting November 3, you can order your favorite 8-inch sandwich any time after 2 pm and make it a combo for free, which includes a bag of Jimmy Chips and a drink, throughout November and December.
