After 42 years, “Rejects” Play Farewell Show Friday

What do you get when you mix some local teachers, drums, guitars, a keyboard and couple of kazoos?  The answer is the iconic, family friendly band that has been entertaining fans at special events and festivals since 1973.  The Rejects, however, are disbanding as a couple of members are moving out of state for retirement.  All good things must come to an end.

As a result, Friday, Sept 25th from 4pm – 7pm, The Rejects will play their last Happy Hour concert at The Soft Rock Cafe at  877 E. Franklin Street in Centerville.  Free Pizza will be served to attendees.. and of course there will be drink specials.

Known for playing classic rock, oldies and even some new hits, The Reject’s shows are never short on talent, humor or fun.

It all started 42 years ago when some Centerville teachers Dan Hill and Steve Flaum, joined with Dan’s brother, the drummer.  Over the years the lineup has changed slightly, but the basic core have remained.  Gary Knight of “The Fries” was once a part of the band, and the addition of Beth Hill many years ago allowed keyboards and more vocal variety into the repertoire.

In 1994, the band was inducted into the Kazoo Hall of Fame for their special contributions to “Kazoo Rock.”   But make no mistake, this is a great live Rock n Roll band.  People of all ages dance and sing along with the hits of the group.  Lots of gags apply such as Mr Flaum aka Dr Humm’s “severed mannequin hand” holding the microphone to the mic stand.  Or a suitcase marked BRAIN in a humorous misspelling of Brian Hinder’s name.  Who can forget the “You’re Sixteen” sing-a-long” where the band holds up signs of “60” during the lyrics, suggesting ” You’re 60, you’re beautiful and you’re mine” as a sign of the times.

From festivals to parties, from amphitheaters to bars, and even gymnasiums, The Rejects have kept a busy schedule over the years.  They have entertained thousands and thousands of people from the Miami Valley and beyond.  First performing to friends and students, to family members and just overall fans, the band now finds themselves performing to kids of their students and the band’s grandkids.  Far from rejects, the band members have proven themselves as pillars in the Dayton area communities.

This weekend mark’s one of Dayton’s biggest festivals and Food Adventures of the year, …Oktoberfest!

Held at the Dayton Art Institute, it is a plethora of Beer, Crafts, Cigars and Food.  Some blogs will give you tips on parking, but The Big Ragu, Hungry Jax and Chef House have been eating and drinking their way through this festival for about 40 years.  So who better than the Food Adventure Crew to sort through the food with their hundreds of thousands of calories in expertise?

Of course the #1 item is one so creamy and rich, you will pass out from pleasure.  The line might be long, but the end result is worth it.  Grab one of these huge cream puffs from Schmidt’s Booth, all the way from Columbus.  The cream puff is as big as half your head, and more delicious than 100 movie stars.

 

— #2  CHERRY or PUMPKIN STRUDEL from THE ORIGINAL STRUDEL FACTORY:
Another OMG moment at the festival, is when you introduce your friends to this little number.  Hungry Jax and The Big Ragu agree that  the Apple Strudel  and Pumpkin Strudel steal the show.  The food lines are not bad at this booth , and the strudel is fresh out of the oven.

 

— #3  THE BRATWURST in the METTS and BRATS TENT:
We are not sure if these are a German Club item or Dayton Art Institute.. we just know with a little sauerkraut, or Dusseldorf mustard, these babies go great with beer.  Chef House’s pick of the fest.  She could hang out in this booth all night, and with the beer trucks of course!

 

— #4  THE GERMAN POTATO PANCAKES from THE “HEY HEY” FOOD BOOTH:
Giant, delicious and cheap.  Unfortunately everyone knows about these, so the line is a little long sometimes.  Don’t fret, good things come to those who wait, and it’s not like the line to the Beast at Kings Island. But these big potato cakes are beasts in themselves.

 

— #5  THE GERMANATOR at ZOMBIE DOGZ:
Dayton’s #1 food truck rolls in with this hot dog smothered in braised beef brisket, beer cheese and topped with fried onions.  Another original item, where they knock it out of the park.  Fight the line, and get the rewards of this one of a kind, big wiener.  What’s on your zombie?

— #6  THE PULLED CHICKEN SANDWICH from SMOKIN’ BAR-B-QUE
This Oregon District mainstay, comes in with an entry like a lightning bolt.  The pulled chicken is perfectly cooked, but the secret is in the sauce.  All foodies know that a condiment table can be where the magic happens and puts the ying to the yang.  In this case it is true.  Find the extra BBQ sauce bottle and squirt some more on your sandwich.  Close the bun, take a bite.  If some sauce drips on your finger, just get a canvas and hang an inspired finger painting in the art museum.

 

— #7  THE SOFT PRETZEL BOOTH:
Happiness is a warm pretzel.  We are talking so fresh you can hardly hold it.  We mean it, right out of the oven into a napkin, to warming your heart.  Soft inside, with the perfect outer crust, this pretzel is meant for some mustard and beer.  Warning:  you might crave a second one later in the night.

 

— #8 THE CRAB CAKES from BROCK MASTERSONS:  Seared on a flat grill, these gargantuan crab cakes are the best in town.  So good, that you will want two.  Also a thumbs up for the sauce served with the cakes.  It is the perfect touch and very tasty.  The crab cakes are full of flavor and worth the treat.

— #9  THE HAMBURGER at THE HAMBURGER WAGON: Hamburg, Germany.. that’s a town, right?  Well this Hamburger Wagon is as old as many towns.  Finishing their 103rd year, it is fair to say they are a Dayton icon.  We suggest the Double Burger, it is our newest rage at the wagon.  And as always “they don’t need no stinkin’ condiments.”

 

— #10 CHICKEN ON A STICK at BANGKOK HOUSE BOOTH:
The strange looking skewer, the incredible smell off the grill.  This busy booth sells all kinds of specialties, but the one to grab is the Chicken on a Stick. The marinated chicken comes out perfectly grilled and the result is a cross between somewhere between tender chicken, and other bites having a slight jerky feel to it.  A “must eat at Oktoberfest !

— #11  THE SUPERFOODS BURGER at BRIXX:  
Quinoa, spinach, avocados, cranberries and turkey  A surprise Food Adventure on a bun that we weren’t expecting.  Chris Bhai has done it again with his “out of the box” thinking. ion a burger?  YES! But the best thing is the taste!

 

— #12  THE PUB CHEESE FRIES from DUBLIN PUB:
Most Daytonians are familiar with these rich sinful cheese fries.  These hunger busting pub fries, topped with cheese and bacon, deserve a spot on the list.  Everytime we order these we find people reaching into our basket and snagging a bite.  Grab a batch of these hometown favorites. The are Chef House’s guilty little pleasure!

— #13  THE WIENERSCHNITZEL SANDWICH from the GERMAN SCHNITZEL BOOTH:  
Pretty much a fried pork tenderloin looking sandwich.  It is a good sized sandwich that is easily shared.  There is also schnitzel under the Brats and Metts tent in the German Food line.  I’m sure a cabbage roll or potatoes would go good with this.

 

— #14  THE TRADITONAL GYRO from the GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH BOOTH:
So you thought Greek Fest was your last chance in 2015 to get these?  Think again!  Take advantage of this rare chance to get the same gyros served at Greek Fest.  The only other time you can find these is at World a ‘Fair,  We recommend the traditional gyro with everything on it.  We feel it is much more flavorful than the chicken gyro.

—  #15  THE ROADHOUSE PORK CHOP from THE BLACKJACK GRILL: 
A giant pork chop, plus a huge grill means the most eye appealing site at the festival.  There is nothing quite like watching these huge porkchops cook.  Served as a sandwich or by themselves, this is your chance to get a big slab of meat for yourself.  Dab it with some of the Blackjack BBQ sauce and it’s time to go to town.

 

Honorable Mention: The Cabbage Rolls and Saeurkraut Balls are also Food Adventure favorites.

Won’t You Be Our Neighbor?

Downtown Dayton residents share their stories on why they moved downtown and why they love it!

Housing developments in downtown Dayton have never been more popular. It seems as soon as a new project is finished, another one is announced. Who’s buying or renting these spaces and what motivates them to seek this kind of city-centric lifestyle? The Downtown Dayton Partnership showcases three families who’ve made the move. Get a glimpse into the lives of people who live downtown—and a sneak peek into some of the residential complexes featured on the Downtown Housing Tour from 1-5 p.m. September 19.

Kelly, Mike, and Noah Romano, Patterson Place

WalkingWhen Kelly and Mike Romano began shopping for a new home, they didn’t set out looking for a new-build property. “(Mike) likes the really urban looks and historic homes, I wanted something simple,” Kelly said. When they stepped into a model of Patterson Place, it seemed as though everyone would win with this home. The Charles Simms Development units combine such “urban” aesthetic as lofted ceilings and exposed brick with minimalist, clean design. The Romanos fell in love with the space, but there were still potential road blocks the Vandalia family had to confront.

The couple’s 14-year-old son, Noah, had grown up in the Vandalia-Butler school system and wasn’t keen on starting fresh at a different school. Encouraged by a family friend whose child attended Dayton Public Schools, Kelly and Noah made a trip to Stivers School for the Arts, located less than a mile and a half from the potential new downtown home. “The school was smaller for sure,” Kelly said. “There are about 900 kids in the whole school (grades 7 through 12) versus about 300 students per class at Vandalia-Butler.” The benefits of a smaller school became apparent when Kelly and Noah visited the recording studio. “There was a group of students who showed (Noah) around the studio and really started talking to him, getting to know him,” Kelly recalled. “It was a defining moment, I think.”

DiningNoah agreed and went on to describe how Stivers’ school pride impressed him. “The school had a gift shop; that was pretty different,” he said. One hurdle down: Noah auditioned and was accepted to Stivers’ choral program. He began his freshman year in August.

Finite space is another hallmark of city life. There’s not much room for sprawling McMansions in an urban environment, which is why many lofts, townhomes and condos employ a creative use of vertical space. Still, the Romanos had some downsizing to do before they could call their new urban digs home. “It’s definitely smaller than I’m used to,” Noah said. “But there are so many other things that are closer and easy to walk to bike to.” It’s true that what the Romanos sacrificed in square footage for their home, they gained in access to amenities. No space for a six-burner-stove and island prep in the kitchen? No problem—there are seven places to grab a bite to eat that are two blocks away or closer (hundreds more within walking and biking distance). Running out of room for guests at a party? Spill out into the parking lot instead. The Romanos can attest to the friendly atmosphere of their cozy dwellings. “We didn’t interact with our neighbors much (in Vandalia),” Mike said. “Here, you’re so close, it’s hard not to interact with your neighbors. It’s not uncommon to see several get-togethers blend into one big gathering (along the ground-level spaces, patios and access drive).

“Kitchen(Living downtown) feels like an on-going party that doesn’t stop!” he said.

Beyond folding them into their social circles, the Romanos said their new neighbors made them feel part of the community. “Everyone’s been so supportive of us,” Kelly said. “They ask about Noah and school. He even picked up some odd jobs for our neighbors like watering plants and walking dogs.”

Downtown’s communal atmosphere is not all the Romanos love about their new home. “We definitely walk more than we used to,” Kelly said. “We’re members of the Dayton Racquet Club and we can walk to the gym. It’s an easy walk to stores and restaurants on St. Clair or the Oregon District. We just got our Link (Dayton Bike Share) passes and we can get from place to place quickly.” Noah chimed in that he can walk to his karate lessons in the Oregon District. The 2nd Street Market, RiverScape MetroPark, and Fifth Third Field were other walkable destinations the family named among their most frequented places. “When we first moved here, our neighbors told us we couldn’t leave when there are festivals,” Kelly said. Mike agreed; “It’s so easy when they’re practically in your backyard! We go to practically every festival and every event downtown.”

patioThe slower pace of walking and biking also presents new things to discover. “You find things you never knew existed,” Mike said. “We found Urban Krag (Climbing Center in the Oregon District) that way.” Kelly echoed that sentiment and added her affinity for the shops in the St. Clair Lofts—Salon J Ladner, Pi Style Boutique, Linwood Men’s Specialty Shoppe, and Twist Cupcakery. Several blocks away at the Cannery Building, Kelly and Mike said they discovered Sherwood Florist and The Black Box Improv Theater, where they have returned many times for performances.

Now the Romanos are sharing their downtown love with friends and family. “People were surprised when we moved here,” Mike said. Kelly agreed, and added that they are happy to share their positive experiences with visitors. “We had some friends who we took to the Dayton Racquet Club, and they joined,” she said. “I think the common reaction is downtown is cooler than they expected. It was even cooler than we expected when we moved here!”

Amy and Kevin Rehfus, The Landing

Having just moved to their new digs at The Landing in June, the Rehfuses are still pretty fresh to downtown, but they’re acclimating rather quickly, particularly to their new-found free time. The couple moved from a home approximately 3,300 square feet with a huge, rolling lawn down to about 1,500 square feet with a deck and patio. Amy and Kevin leavingfound the process to be quite liberating. “(Moving from the suburbs to downtown) was freeing, if anything,” Kevin said. Amy agreed: “(At the old house) we were constantly working on the lawn and maintaining the house. We don’t miss that at all! It frees up your time so you can actually do more.”

Originally from North Canton, Amy and Kevin said they always lived in the suburbs, and the transition from their home of five years in Troy to The Landing downtown was big, but nevertheless a change they made with a clear vision for the type of lifestyle they craved. “We had to think what we wanted out of a home and community,” Amy said. The couple wanted to live somewhere affordable where they could be less dependent on a vehicle, and they wanted nearby amenities that would complement reduce car-reliance. “Dayton checked off all the items on our list,” Amy recalled. “We were surprised!”

patioEven though their new apartment home is physically smaller than their suburban digs, they said they don’t feel cramped or that they lack space. “There are so many places to visit and they’re practically in our back yard,” Kevin said. Giving one particular weekend as an example, the couple recounted attending a Big Band Nights concert at RiverScape MetroPark on Thursday, The Square Is Where Goes Over the Edge Drop Party on Courthouse Square Friday, then on Saturday, they hopped on the bike path that runs behind their apartment building and rode to Tank’s and Carillon Park, and topped that all off with a walk back to RiverScape for the Hispanic Heritage Festival. “You don’t feel like you’re exercising when you’re just traveling from place to place,” Amy said.

LinkbikesFrom the Rehfuses’ home, perched on the banks of the Great Miami River, they will have front-row seats to watch more active lifestyle amenities come online. Construction has started on the new RiverScape River Run project, which will stabilize the banks of the river and enhance habitat. Flow control structures also will be installed, mimicking the natural flow of a healthy river. The structures will create two passageways for kayaks, canoes and other paddle sports. One will be a slow-moving channel for novice and leisure paddle sport enthusiasts, and the other will be faster for more experienced kayakers, who will be able to use the channel for dips, flips and other tricks. The removal of the dangerous low dam will create a 7-mile river trail where paddlers can put in at Eastwood MetroPark and float all the way down to Carillon Park. Construction is expected to take a year to complete.

Alongside the river, a new mural is being painted on the floodwall, adding beauty and visual interest to the cityscape. K12 Gallery, another downtown business, has been contracted to apply the design created by local artist Amy Deal.

Being so close to so many amenities and events has provided the couple with more activities than they could possibly entertain. “We’ve been so busy, we haven’t taken a vacation or even bothered to hook up the cable yet!” Kevin mused.

citywalkThe abundance of action wasn’t the only surprise downtown Dayton had in store for the Rehfuses. “We didn’t think we would experience a lot of nature (being in an urban environment), but we encounter a ton of birds and squirrels and rabbits,” Amy said. Downtown’s less furry denizens got a nod, as well. “You know, sometimes you hear about city life and how people living there are more stoic and cold,” she said. “I was surprised at just how friendly people are who live downtown!”

Local shops and restaurants rounded out the Rehfuses’ list of aspects of downtown life they love. Whether it’s walking to dinner, riding their bikes along the largest bikeway network in the country, taking in the sights and sounds of cultural festivals, or any other downtown activity, Amy said the transition has been rewarding: “Our lives have completely changed — for the better!”

kitchen April Alford came to Dayton by way of New Jersey. She was working for the U.S. Postal Service when the opportunity to transfer to a higher position came up. “I applied to lots of locations, and Dayton was the first to respond,” she said. Alford moved to Dayton and took up residence initially in Shroyer Park. But when she checked out the St. Clair Lofts during an open house, it was love at first sight. “I worked downtown and I had a friend who lived in the lofts,” she said. “I thought the space was great and it put me right in the middle of arts, culture, events, food – all within walking distance of my home and work.”

Now a downtown resident for four years, Alford said she was initially surprised at how outgoing people are. “In New Jersey, people are busy, and you don’t see your neighbors a lot or really talk to each other. Moving to Dayton, I noticed people are more friendly, especially downtown,” she said.

Alford still works downtown at the Board of Elections. When she’s not at work or hanging out in her funky urban loft, Alford enjoys all the amenities downtown has to offer. “You can find me at The Neon (movie theater), Oregon Express, and probably the Schuster (Center) or Victoria Theatre,” she said. “I love plays; each year I make sure I get my Passport to the Arts from Culture Works so I can get great deals on attending performing arts events!”

livingroom She also spends her down-time volunteering with another group close to her heart – Activated Spaces. Since 2011, the program has been filling formerly vacant street-level storefronts with art and Pop-Up Shops. The latest iteration of Activated Spaces introduced the Pop-Up Office concept. Activated Spaces is managed by the Downtown Dayton Partnership and run by a team of volunteers, mostly from the UpDayton, a nonprofit focused on attracting and retaining young talent through civic engagement and volunteer initiatives, and the Dayton Chamber of Commerce’s young professional organization Generation Dayton. “I started out as a volunteer with UpDayton and from there got into (Activated Spaces),” Alford said. “I love that I get to play such a direct role in making the city where I live a better place.”

onthetownActivated Spaces’ most recent Pop-Up Shops are two eatery concepts, frozen banana dessert scoop shop Fronana, and Twist Cupcakery, a café and full-service bakery that happens to be located in the first-floor of the St. Clair Lofts. The bakery joins another Pop-Up Shop alumna, Pi Style Boutique, and three other businesses, Anthony James Painting and Contracting, J Ladner Salon & Spa and Linwood Men’s Specialty Shoppe. Alford said she loves having shopping; hair, nail and spa services, and a lunch or dessert spot steps from her loft. But really, she’s invested her time in the program to encourage Dayton’s small patiobusiness scene. “These are people with dreams of opening a shop, and those dreams are in our hands,” she said. “It’s important for me to volunteer because I can make an impact for the city and help (entrepreneurs) achieve their dreams.”

Alford invites anyone considering making a switch to living downtown to at least check out a space. “I love living here; it’s the complete package,” she said. “If you’re into the arts and culture, good food, exciting nightlife, and friendly people, come downtown!”

The Greek Fest Gyro – one of the joys of festival weekend

Two heavy hitters in the Dayton festival world go head to head every year for attendance the weekend after Labor Day.  These 2 festivals are the Greek Festival and the Italian Festival.  Why do they both hold their big events on the same weekend?  We don’t know, but we do know that when asked if they would move the festival to another weekend, both sides aren’t budging.

We decided to compare the festivals under our favorite topic.. FOOD.  What happens when these two ancient nations and cultures collide in a battle of the culinary worlds?  The food Adventures Crew asks you, Dayton…

Which festival has better food, GREEK FEST or ITALIAN FEST ?

Chef House, Hungry Jax and The Big Ragu have decided to put decades of eating experience at each festival to the test, with the most definitive and exhaustive comparison to date.   Most of these foods only come around once a year, so our mouths have been watering for months.

Haunted Dayton Beer Dinner Returns to Amber Rose

“Rhinegeists and Poltergeists 2” is coming BACK to the Amber Rose on Friday night October 2nd.  This is the long awaited return of the successful 4 course, 4 beer dinner. Tickets are pre-pay only (CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS).  Earlier this year, the event sold out and over 110 people packed the private, upstairs area of the “haunted” Amber Rose Restaurant.

 

POLTERGEISTS:

For the last 20 years, staff at the restaurant say that there are ghosts and apparitions that appear at all times of the day.  There are also claims of unexplained phenomena such as glasses and dishes being tossed, lights going on and off and more.  One of the ghosts  is believed to be the daughter of the former house owner.  She is a playful spirit named Genevieve Ksiezopolski aka “Chickie.”  Does she haunt the restaurant?  Take for example this incident, where a cook claimed to see a full apparition of a lady in a long dress who walked into the room, then turned and walked away. NEW FINDINGS:

For the last couple of months, an independent paranormal investigating team has been taking sound samples, photos, and kinetic energy studies and have made some new findings.  We unveil the new evidence on October 2nd,  and also highlight some of the discoveries from the past investigations done by the three person team.    Independent Paranormal Investigators Kat Powell and Shelly Suittor met in 1999 as tour guides for the Ohio State Reformatory, Prospect Place, and Snow Hill Country Club and teamed up with Alicia Soich in 2012,  This “ghost hunter” crew has appeared on National Television!  Their work has been featured in “America’s Most Haunted,” “My Ghost Story”, and Haunted Ohio VI. Say It Ain’t So, Rinaldo !

Rinaldo’s Bakery – 45 years comes to a close

One of Dayton’s Iconic bakeries is closing September 14th.  No more huge elephant ears, half moon cookies, Italian wedding cake, tiramisu, or “adult” birthday cakes.  Rinaldo’s Bake Shoppe, located just north of downtown at  at 910 Fairview Ave., plans on closing its doors forever in less than 2 weeks.

The Food Adventure is over for Rinaldo and Anna Stolfo, who came to Dayton from Italy and have been making baked goods for 45 years.  The bakery has been a staple for local Italian specialties and Kosher items.    The closing will come a day after the Dayton Italian Festival weekend aka “Fall Festa,” which depends on Rinaldo’s Bakery for many dessert items.  The date of closing also coincides with  the first day of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

Rinaldo and Anna’s son, John had taken over most of the operations of the bakery, but John’s health concerns and the work load proved too much for the family to keep bearing.   Daytonians will miss this one of a kind bakery.

We at Dayton Most Metro and Food Adventures would like to congratulate the Stolfo family on the success of their life’s work, since opening the bakery in 1970.  Every time we visited we were met with a smile, and treated like family.  We have enjoyed spending time with the family at the Bella Villa Hall as club members, and appreciate all the specialty cookies they made for us and each specialty cake that made our party a success.

Treadway’s Gardens: On the Vine Since ’69

93 year old Frank Treadway sits in the shade, on a swing with his wife, in front of his Centerville farm and produce stand.  He talks about getting married in 1946, and driving from his Cumberland Kentucky home to Dayton on his honeymoon..  He and his wife fell in love with Dayton, and the rest as they say, is history.  And what a history it is, Treadway’s Garden, on State Route 48 near Social Row Rd., has left a legacy of fresh farm produce through 3 generations.

The whole family is involved, even grandkids, students and part time adults.  The result is a haven of produce and flowers that has become a staple in Centerville.

Treadway’s Gardens is a favorite stop of Chef House, The Big Ragu and Hungry Jax.  Why?  The inviting atmosphere, the great local fruits and veggies. And finally, of course the  friendly service is the clincher.   You feel welcome, they treat you like family.   It is a true joy to stop by the garden and see what’s happening.

HERE’S THE SKINNY: 

 

— TREADWAY’S GARDEN is located at 10245 Dayton Lebanon Pike, in Washington Township/ Centerville

— Treadway’s Hours – 7 days a week , 10am – 7pm, Memorial day thru Halloween.

During Sept and Oct., they usually stay open until 6pm.

Don’t forget they sell Frazier Fur Christmas trees from North Carolina in the winter !

 

— A true family owned business.  Mr. and Mrs. Treadway started selling produce at the farm in 1969.   Today their three children all have a hand in the farm.  Stephanie has been running the operations for the past 9 years.  Her brother Jeff tends to the bees, and honey making.   Janet, who recently retired form teaching, is now involved with the farm too!  All of the grandkids and that have lived in the area have worked at the garden and benefited in a lot of ways.  They learned the meaning of hard work and family values.  Mr. Treadway told Big Ragu, “If you wan’t to lose that belly, I can get you working here picking some produce in the field.”  Farm chores are a heck of a workout.

–— Stephanie Treadway Wilson took us on a tour of the 10 acre farm.  They rotate farming 5 acres each year.  We saw the bees and an old smoker near the farm house.  Those cluster of structures are some of the oldest buildings in Montgomery county.

 

— They have a “pick your own” option for some of the vegetables throughout the summer.  In past decades, adults would mostly do this, in recent years, there has been a trend where parents take their kids to the field to help them learn about freshly grown fruits and vegetables.  There motto is “Our garden is your garden.”  Each child who comes to the garden gets a free Zinnia Flower from the farm.  They make you feel welcome at every turn.

— There are also some local sauces, jams, etc. for sale at the garden, including Housemade Sriracha and Housemade Hot Honey, which of course our close to our heart.

 

— Giving back to the community – Treadway’s supports many local organizations such as MDA and Alzheimers local charities.  The Big Ragu can remember when he worked MDA fundraising events from 1994-2002, the Treadway family would donate much of the concession stand produce used for hamburger and sausage toppings.   Stephanie’s 3 children all worked for the MDA camp as well.  The family is humble and quiet about their local charity involvement, but we want to sing those praises here.

 

Now it is time to taste some of the bountiful harvest.   They are all fresh and delicious products, but we have our faves.

MUST EATS:

— PEACHES: The cleanest, plumpest, juiciest peaches known to man are here.  We find ourselves unable to get to the car before taking a chomp out of one of the peaches we bought.  Freshness in every bite, tell us what you think after trying one of these gems.  Hungry Jax and The Big Ragu recommend these as favorites.

 

— NATURAL HONEY: Made on site from bees on site !  Mr Treadway himself and son Jeff tend to the bees.  The result is your benefit, with some of the tastiest honey you have ever tried. On toast, or drizzled over good food, you cant go wrong. We also love cooking with this stuff!

 

— SWEET CORN: Some of the best in the area and 50 cents per ear.  Like all of Treadway’s produce, you can count on them to be beautiful, fresh and delicious.  We have been making them 3 ways this summer: steaming, boiling and grilling the corn in the husk.    It kicks your cookouts up a notch.  So sweet, so delicious, we add a bit of butter and salt and as Jackie Gleason said .. “How sweet it is !”  The Big Ragu highly recommends this corn on the cob!

 

Lots of Pepper Choices from Hot to Not

— CANTALOUPES:  Hungry Jax says you cant go wrong with the cantaloupe at Treadway’s Garden.  Juicy, fresh and beautiful, they make the healthiest of summer time treats and eats.  A versatile fruit, this deliciousness goes well with practically any meal.

 

— TOMATOES : Giant, plump and juicy tomatoes in trays adorn the greeting area.  The display speaks for itself.  Slice them up alone with some salt or sugar, or use them in a salad.  We prefer a slice with our grilled burgers.   Also, Hungry Jax and Big Ragu like them for helping make the perfect marinara sauce.  Here is a Food Adventure tip from Chef House: The 50% off tomato bin is great!

 

— ONIONS: Some of the best looking, large onions around are found here.  We asked Mr Treadway, what is your favorite thing on the farm? He answered, :Onions and tomatoes! You can make a meal with them by themselves.”  You know what, he is right.  Listen to the expert with 68 years of farming experience.

 

Green Peppers

— SUPER CHILE PEPPERS:  These are some very tasty peppers. They are grown like Thai chilies, pointing up towards the sky, but they are in the cayenne family, which are not as hot as Thai Chiles.  Chef House knows good, spicy food, and she says these peppers are perfect for cooking.

 

— CAYENNE PEPPERS:  You have never seen cayenne peppers this big.  Chef House recommends these magnificent looking peppers to  give some heat to your summer cooking.  Truth be told, Chef House also walks around sometimes, munching on these peppers.  Now that’s a hot habit.

 

— PUMPKINS:  Chef House is always impressed and obsessed with the beautiful pumpkins at Treadway’s. Carving or cooking, you have found the perfect local place to grab your Halloween and Thanksgiving Pumpkin needs

What’s on the horizon for Treadway’s Gardens?  Frank’s grandson (Stephanie’s son) Taylor is being groomed to eventually take a more leading role in operations.  One of his current additions to the mix, is putting Treadway’s produce in the Oakwood Farmer’s Market.  This has helped introduce more Dayton people to their amazing goods.
What is the secret to 46 years of successful farming and produce sales?

Frank Treadway says “word of mouth,” and points to the customers who were sitting and talking to each other.  He feels the inviting atmosphere makes customers comfortable and coming back for more.

Stephanie says passion plays a big part too.  “If a person has passion for what they are doing they will succeed.   It seems that success comes if you are passionate about anything you do and are a well rounded person.”   Great advice from one of Centerville’s iconic families.

“Sushi Sunday” one night only, a Food Adventure Event on Sept 20th

Do you love sushi?  How about all the sushi you want? Then you need to get tickets to this one night only Food Adventure event called “SUSHI SUNDAY.”

On September 20th, the Food Adventure Crew, teams with The Sushi Club to bring you a fun night of Sushi, door prizes, more sushi, drink specials, trivia fun, more sushi, giveaways and more sushi…   The sushi chefs are ready for your appetite !

— The dinner will feature an All You Can Eat Sushi theme, with sushi rolls being made fresh.  Choose from over 43 different sushi rolls, (20 cooked and 23 raw choices) all made to order (vegetarian options available).

Thinking Outside the Kid’s Lunch Box

It feels like summer barely started and here we are already looking to start another school year! It’s that time of year again where we make sure our kiddos have the necessary supplies, new clothes and even technology to start the school year off right. In addition to being so conscious about your student’s educational needs, let’s explore some creative and delicious options for their appetites!

After all, Food Adventures aren’t just for adults !  Dayton Most Metro’s resident foodie mom, Hungry Jax, is here for some tips on making the most of your children’s school lunches!

 

EQUIPMENT:

First, let’s talk about the lunch box hardware that is helpful for making health, fun and easy lunches. Obviously, a good lunch box that has a thermal lining will help keep foods fresh and flavorful while it hangs out in your kid’s locker or coatroom. Buy a mini ice pack to toss into the lunch box/bag to further ensure their food stays cold.

Depending on beverages that your child prefers at lunch, a good thermos to keep water, milk or juice cold is also important. Finally, there are so many lunch container options that help parents create their own “bento box” for kids on the market. You can find many options in the food storage aisle of your local grocery store.

 

SUN-BUTTER:

While peanut butter and jelly has always been a fantastic “go to” for school lunches, these days many schools are not allowing nut butters due to allergy concerns for their students. A close alternative is using Sun-butter, which is made from sunflower seeds. Sun-butter has a very similar taste and consistency to peanut butter! Some kids might notice the difference right away, but keep offering it to them and they eventually will get used to it. You can find sun-butter in most grocery stores in the natural foods section.

 

TOO CRUSTY?

Do your kids not like the crust on their sandwiches? Get creative! Use large cookie cutters to cut their sandwiches into fun shapes! You can also buy actually sandwich cutters that are made to cut the shapes out to as close as the edge as possible so as to not waste any food.

TORTILLAS TO THE RESCUE:

Hungry Jax will vouch that when in doubt, put food rolled up into a tortilla and a kid will eat it. Just about any sandwich filling can be rolled up and even sliced into pinwheels! One of her family favorites is taking 8oz of cream cheese and whipping it with a tsp of vanilla and tsp of lemon zest. Slather a wheat tortilla with this mixture and then add fresh fruit. Roll up and leave whole or slice it up! A refreshing lunch that’s not the same old lunch meat or pb&j! And it’s versatile! Instead of a sweet cream cheese, go savory with chopped herbs and veggies!

 

 

DO THE DIP:

Another thing that kids like to do: dip their food into stuff. Why not make some fresh humus and chop up some veggies or pitas to dip? Slice up a baguette, pepperoni and mozzarella and let them dip it in homemade marinara for a fun play on pizza.

 

 

HOMEMADE vs STORE MADE:

Are your kids a fan of those popular pre-made lunch containers found in the refrigerator section of the grocery store? You know the ones: they have slimy, pre-cut lunchmeat, cheeses and crackers? We aren’t. And here’s why: we can create our own version for cheaper and healthier. Buy a stack of the segmented lunch containers (one for each day of the week). Chop up your own meats and cheeses on Sunday night and divvy them up within the containers. The night before or morning of, add crackers, fruit/veggies and whatever else you want. Boom. You just saved yourself money and preservatives.

 

SMOOTH & HEALTHY MOVES:

Do your kids like smoothies? Make a batch of smoothies on Sunday. Freeze them in small containers and on the morning of school, toss one in their lunch bag (don’t forget the straw). By lunchtime, the smoothie will have thawed enough to drink! It also duos as an ice pack!

Yogurt is another great option. Let your kids build their own yogurt parfaits! Buy a tub of yogurt and divvy it up into small containers on Sunday night (yes, we are keeping you busy on your Sundays). Chop up fruit for them to add as well as granola! Even toss in some chocolate chips for a special treat! Your kids will have fun assembling their parfaits and you can feel good that they are getting a healthy meal!

Salads are another great option where you can include healthy and fun options. Also consider pasta salads!

With a little forethought and preparation, you can provide your kids (and yourself) with healthy and fun lunch options that are more affordable and creative!

 

INTERNET & INPUT:

There are so many ideas out there on the internet! Start a Pinterest board and let your creative juices flow! And don’t forget to let your kids help! Make it a part of their nightly routine to put a lunch together for the next day. Get their input on what’s easy to eat but still fills them up. It only takes an extra 10 minutes a day to prepare your kids for the ultimate Lunch Food Adventure!

DLM Food Adventure Cooking Class Promises Some “Firsts”

The Big Ragu, Hungry Jax and Chef House are featured in this months DLM’s “Party Foods Class.”

 Jackie “Hungry Jax” Scanlan, LeeAnne “Chef House” and Steve “The Big Ragu” Milano promise a cooking class like no other on Friday night August 14th.   This event will be a mix of a party, a cooking demo, trivia night and some prize giveaways.  The night is going to be as wild as Donald Trump’s hair !

The “Party Foods” class marks the first time that the Food Adventures Crew will be taking over the Culinary Center at Dorothy Lane Market in Washington Township.  And it looks like a good one, filled with wine and beer as well.

Food Adventures is a popular Dayton food blog, with  over 5,400 loyal Facebook followers.  The trio of foodies is also known for their weekly articles on DaytonMostMetro .com that feature anything from mom and pop local restaurants, to festival events, recipes or foodie tips!  From time to time the Food Adventure Crew will host dinners at local restaurants to spotlight a great place that you may not have heard about.  They partner with area festivals, food happenings and even support over 50 charity events, every single year.  Much more than a free Instagram account they even have one of those (#Dayton_Foodies) and a Twitter following too (@Food_Adv) !

Hungry Jax

JACLYN SCANLAN aka “HUNGRY JAX”:

Jackie relocated to the Dayton area in 2006.  This Italian girl from Upstate NY found herself in a very different culinary atmosphere than what she was used to back home in Utica, NY.  However, different proved to be good a she fell in love with not only this “gem” of a city, but also the food and foodies within it! Cooking is a passion of Jackie’s.  She loves to use her husband, John, and two daughters, Coraline and Ashlyn, as her lab rats to test recipes out.  Some of her recipes have even been published in National Food Magazines!  But as much as she loves to cook, she also loves to take a night off from her kitchen and enjoy eating out and letting someone else do all the work (and the clean up)!  Other foodie interests include 8 years of volunteering at the Dorothy Lane Market School of Cooking and being an Alton Brown fan since way back when he wore bowling shirts.  Jackie is excited to be part of the Food Adventures team and is always looking forward to experiencing some new eats!

 

 

LEEANNE HOUSE aka “CHEF HOUSE”:

Chef House

Chef House or “The Sriracha Mamma” is all about the heat.  Lover of all things spicy she is constantly in the kitchen coming up with fun new ways to whip up veggies and add a little spice.  She is a Dayton native, with lifelong experience in the restaurant industry, working with some of the best chefs in the Miami Valley.  She loves to keep it local especially in the summer when beautiful produce is plentiful. She is a true foodie who knows we have a lot to offer in Ohio!  LeeAnne is also the owner of Housemade Sauces which specializes in a locally made Sriracha Sauce and a  Hot Honey Sriracha Sauce, which have won national awards.  Chef House is also the owner of the new “Bad Dog” Hot Dog Cart which features local dogs, local toppings and local buns!  She is also involved in putting on the “Night Market” events at the Yellow Cab Building.  She is definitely a foodie fixture around town, and an up and coming Chef.

The Big Ragu

STEVE MILANO aka “THE BIG RAGU”:

A lifelong Dayton resident, his early food influence was in his mom’s kitchen and his dad’s grill.  Other incredible food memories are his grandparents’ Italian and German/Scottish cooking.  Ragu’s love of food is only matched by his love of sports, travel, karaoke and just needing to be held.  An attention seeking missile, Ragu’s favorite foods include Seafood, Italian Food, and Chinese/Japanese cuisine.  Other hobbies include overeating  and a slight attraction to deep fried menu items.   Whether a locally owned business, fine dining, a dive, buffets, fast foods and even a few chain favorites, he enjoys visiting them all with a “no rules” attitude.  You can usually recognize him at festivals by the sweaty guy with the food stain on his shirt.  Emotionally eating his way through life with the Crew, they leave no plate unturned.  Most recently, his recipes have been featured in the monthly Foremost Seafood Newsletter.  This “foodie in his forties” is proud to be involved in dozens of local charity committees.

McGillicutty’s: The Greatest Breadsticks in the World

The Best Breadsticks in the World are at McGillicutty’s, but get a side of garlic butter for dipping

The waitress brings the overflowing basket of breadsticks to the table, still steaming…. Then the look….. you glance at the others at the table.  Should you grab a piece and risk being seen as rude?  Do you pause and risk not getting one of the best breadsticks in the world?  These are the kind of problems you will face at McGillicutty’s.

A popular Kettering icon, McGillicutty’s has always been known for their food and libations.  Let’s face it, it’s bar food, and McGillicutty’s has some of the best in town.  Whether it is Tuesday Night Trivia night, or lounging after a Softball game, it is the perfect place for a laid back Food Adventure.

For decades, the Food Adventures Crew has been hitting up McGillicutty’s for good eats, and here is the full scoop on this pub.

 

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

The Mega Mug at Mcgillicutty’s – They had ’em first !

— The Kash family has been running McGillicutty’s since the early 1990’s, and are some of the friendliest hosts around.

— The location at 1980 E. Whipp Rd. was a former Noble Roman’s restaurant in the 1970’s and 80’s

— The smell of pizza dough hits you as you walk into the door, and the low key atmosphere is great.  We know it is a family friendly tavern, but we prefer slinging back some drinks and grub with the adult crew.

— A solid group of regulars support the place from dart leagues to Tuesday Trivia (the best in town), and Sunday night Karaoke.

— They dont use deep fryers, they use pizza ovens to bake their menu items.  The result is some inventive and delicious ways to enjoy various traditional favorites.

— Known for festival involvement, another big day for McGillicutty’s is St Patricks Day !  They go bananas on that holiday….

 

What is the best of this extensive menu?  We’ve got the answers after years of research.  Without further delay, we present our patented MUST EATS of McGillicuttys !

 

MUST EATS:

— PRETZELSTICKS (BREADSTICKS): When we say must eat, we mean it here.  These are the best breadsticks we have ever tasted.  Here is secret #1.  They are called pretzelsticks on the menu, which means they are lightly salted.  Secret #2 is that you must try them with the garlic butter sauce or the cream cheese sauce.  Sure the nacho sauce is good and so is the marinara, but the garlic butter and the cream cheese are the top 2, no doubt.  You won’t see these tips anywhere else, because nobody else knows about them, except you.  Aren’t you glad to be our partners in food?

 

The Pepperoni Pizza from McGillicutty’s is where it’s at

— THE PEPPERONI PIZZA:  The pizza is the key.  Thin crust, square cut Dayton style pizza.  The sauce give McGillicutty’s it’s unique taste as does the cheese and the taste of the crisp dough edges.  Deluxe pizzas are great, and loaded toppings are wonderful, but for some reason we keep coming back to the basic Pepperoni as our favorite.  WARNING: the pizza is served ultra hot and we fight the urge and still burn our mouth from time to time.  So.. beware !

 

— THE MEGA MUG: Long before Mexican restaurants or any other bar had the huge mugs, McGillicutty’s had the MEGA MUG.  These 34 ounce mugs are perfect for ice cold draft beers, and MEGA MONDAY’s means they are only $3.50 for domestics.  No matter what day it is, get a  Mega Mug of draft beer with your pizza and breadsticks.  So good, so cold, so thirst quenching…

 

Teezers are Long Tater Tots Stuffed with Jalapeno Cheese

— THE TEEZERS:   Tater Tots with spicy cheese inside.  A perfect opening to a McGillicutty’s visit. We have had others, but not like these.  Maybe it is because they bake them instead of deep fry them.  Maybe it is jalapeno cheese inside.  Whatever the reason, we can’t stop eating these bad boys with a side of cream cheese!

 

— THE ITALIAN STEAK SANDWICH: Served in a basket with chips, you can get a half or whole sandwich.  It is a cube steak with cheese and pizza sauce.  They added onions & banana peppers, all on a hoagie bun.  For some reason the combo is a perfect sandwich after a Softball game, or for watching a sports event.

 

— THE  WINGS:  These are broiled, not fried, so they may be an acquired taste.  Still, get them well done and get the Buffalo Hot sauce and you should be good.  Different enough to try, and good enough to keep ordering.  The Buffalo sauce is the best option here.  We order them extra crispy, plain and dip the wings in the hot sauce.

HONORABLE MENTION to the PHILLY CHEESESTEAK SANDWICH at McGillicutty’s.   It s nicely flavored shaved beef on a hoagie roll.  Asking for a dash of extra mayo is the secret to this one.

Dayton Lands Olympic Development Program For Rowing

rowDayton Regional Rowing to be only such program for rowing in the nation, providing athletes new opportunities and enhancing region’s outdoor recreation offerings.

Five Rivers MetroParks has entered into an agreement with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and USRowing to designate the newly formed Dayton Regional Rowing a Community Olympic Development Program (CODP). Dayton Regional Rowing is a partnership between Five Rivers MetroParks, the Dayton Boat Club and Greater Dayton Rowing Association.

Dayton Regional Rowing is the only USOC and USRowing sanctioned CODP for rowing in the nation and one of only 12 CODPs in the nation.

“This local and national collaboration is another example of how collective efforts can make great things happen in communities,” Five Rivers MetroParks Executive Director Becky Benná said. “The CODP designation elevates the sport of rowing in the region and across the country as the nation’s first CODP for the sport of rowing.

“This designation also complements the Dayton region’s status as the Outdoor Adventure Capital of the Midwest and offers Five Rivers MetroParks and its rowing partners additional opportunities to serve the community by connecting people to nature, our rivers and promoting healthy lifestyles,” she added.

“The USOC is delighted to announce our new partnership with Five Rivers MetroParks to expand youth sport opportunities,” said Alicia McConnell, USOC director of training sites and community partnerships. “The Dayton community continues to show their commitment to supporting healthy and active lifestyles for their citizens, which is in line with the values and mission of the USOC.”rowers

The mission of Dayton Regional Rowing is to provide lifelong personal development and active lifestyles for Miami Valley youth through the sport of rowing, as well as to enhance high-quality intermediate programs for youth to maximize their potential in the Olympic sport of rowing.

“This partnership with Dayton Regional Rowing is a great opportunity to leverage the value the USOC and USRowing affiliation can bring to the local level,” said USRowing CEO Glenn Merry. “USRowing is excited to amplify the work being done in Dayton, drive rowing growth in the region and strengthen critical constructs, such as referee and coaching development.”

“USRowing has a long and successful history of partnerships through our U.S. Olympic training sites in Oklahoma City and in Princeton, N.J.,” he added. “The CODP is a new opportunity to root Olympic excellence at the local and development level for rowing in the United States. Rowing is a lifelong sport and USRowing serves to unlock the champion within our athletes whether in their first year of youth rowing or at the Olympic podium.”

Beginning in 2012, Five Rivers MetroParks led the effort to establish a USOC-designated CODP to enhance opportunities for youth to connect with nature through Dayton’s rivers. This leadership included bringing together the efforts of the region’s two rowing clubs, the Dayton Boat Club and Greater Dayton Rowing Association.

“This recognition represents a huge achievement for the Dayton region and the sport of rowing,” said Jim Wall, president of the Greater Dayton Rowing Association. “This recognition of the quality of our facilities and our program is extremely rewarding. We look forward to continuing our work with the youth in our community, introducing rowing as a sport and identifying future national-level competitors.”

The Dayton Regional Rowing CODP will collaborate with the USOC and USRowing to offer a community-based rowing program. This program will build partnerships and leverage USOC and USRowing resources to help athletes develop their performance, thus enhancing the Olympic sports feeder system in Dayton. Dayton Regional Rowing’s initial goals include hosting coach and referee trainings, creating a clear pathway of athlete development, and increasing participation and improving performance in youth rowing.

“We are eager to begin this exciting collaboration between Dayton Regional Rowing, USRowing and the USOC,” said Mike Miles, Dayton Boat Club head coach. “I expect we will see Dayton rowers competing at the Olympic Games before too long.”

Five Rivers MetroParks will serve as the local administrator of Dayton Regional Rowing, with Director of Outdoor Connections Amy Dingle (pictured right) serving as lead staff member.

Sláinte: United Irish of Dayton’s Celtic Fest comes to Riverscape

I start to get really excited the weekend before. I start listening to my favorite Irish bands and look through my old photos that remind me how much fun I have every year. This coming weekend, July 24th-26th, we celebrate the United Irish of Dayton’s Celtic Fest!

The first Celtic Fest, held in 2002, gave birth to one of the largest and best festivals that Dayton has to offer. The Celtic Fest is the last free festival held in downtown Dayton. Throughout the year, fundraisers known as Celtic Crushes are held at various small businesses. Patrons go and support local vendors and the businesses donate a portion of the bill to help fund the Celtic Fest. Also, festival goers will see donation buckets that allow them to do their part to support the Celtic Fest.

Four stages allow festival goers to be immersed in Celtic culture. Four headliner bands: Gaelic Storm, Scythian, Socks in the Frying Pan and We Banjo 3 plus a handful of local and regional bands provide lots of great music. Band merchandise is sold at the United Irish of Dayton Stage, so if you hear a band and love them, you can purchase their latest CD, T-shirt and other novelty items.

For those wishing to really connect with their Celtic roots, you can see dancers, jam with pipes and drums and even dance in a Céilí! Celtic Academy of Irish Dance, Dwyer School of Irish Dance and the McGovern Ceili Dancers provide dancers of all age groups. Miami Valley Pipes and Drums give a lively performance that stir the Celtic soul and Éamonn de Cógáin calls out the dance moves so that you get to become a participant in the Irish Céilí! 

In addition to the awesome music that fills the streets, multiple merchandise and food vendors are present to satisfy your tastebuds and shopping desires. Traditional fare along with regional food provide ample dishes to try. Jewelry, clothing, pottery, bar ware, home goods and trinkets are just some of the items available to be purchased from local vendors and those from across the pond.

Want more? Various activities such as the cultural exhibits and demonstrations, Parade of Kilts, Rainbow’s End Children’s area, Celtic Breakfast, 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run, Beer Tastings and a Celtic Bike Ride are happening all weekend. Also, all are welcome to attend the Gaelic Mass held Sunday morning at the United Irish of Dayton Stage in the new Five Rivers MetroParks Pavilion. Irish dancers and pipes accompany a Catholic mass service held in both English and Gaelic.

And no Celtic Fest would be complete without beer. This year’s main beer will be Murphy’s Irish Stout which has been consistently brewed in Cork, Ireland, since 1856. The main beer trucks will offer: Murphy’s Irish Stout, Murphy’s Irish Red, Boddington’s Ale, Stella Artois Cider and Bud Light. The craft beer truck (adjacent to the Pub Stage & Wright Flyer on Monument Ave) will be offering: Bellhaven, Fuller ESB, Highland Gaelic Ale, Thirsty Dog Irish Setter, Goose Island Summer Shandy, Blue Point Toasted Ale and Bud Light. For those of you who are disappointed that Guinness and its sister beers will not be offered, I ask you to keep an open mind. The listed beers are a comparable selection to what has been offered in years past. This will give you a opportunity to try a different beer while you enjoy the festival! A new addition to the festival this year is a pairing of the Celtic Fest with Uber. First time Uber users get a free first ride up to $20 with the code CELTICFEST15 (download the app, create account, and use the code). The designated Uber pick up/drop off location is at the corner of Monument and Jefferson. This is a great way for you to enjoy the festival and get home safe and sound!

This is the ONLY spot that will list EVERY food vendor and point you in the way of a great garlic loving time!

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— THE  2015 GARLIC FEST will be held at the Sons of Italy’s Bella Villa Hall at 2625 County Line Rd in Beavercreek

— The event is FREE & will be held from NOON – 8PM

 

FOOD AND TIMELINE:

The Spicy Olive Oil Company will be selling flavor infused Olive Oils, Balsamics and more

11:30am:  The Bocce Classic bocce ball tournament will be underway, and food vendors will be warming up their grills and kitchens.

1) THE AMBER ROSE RESTAURANT:  Look for the kings of comfort food, to throw a Lithuanian twist into Garlic Fest. Look for some Garlic Cheese Fries and a Mini Garlic Monkey bread creation.  It looks like owner Joe Castellano will be showcasing his Italian roots as well!

 

2) BRIXX ICE CO.: What is a festival without Brixx?  Chef and owner Chris Bhai always pushes the envelope while hitting home runs in taste.  His menu will have Grilled Wings tossed in your choice of sauces including Award winning Spicy Garlic, Sriracha BBQ, or Creamy Parmesan.  Also, look for an Italian Bologna Sandwich on Sun Dried Foccocia with Brixx Signature sauce.  Garlic Parm Chicken on roll and homemade kettle chips will please too..  The MUST EAT is Garlic Mortadella Mac N Cheese…(((BOOM)).

3) EL MESON:  The Latin food world will be well represented at Garlic Fest.  El Meson will feature their famous Paella, as well as their incredible food truck menu.  Their South American gourmet food is made with love, and you can taste it in every bite.  Served with incredible presentation, the food tastes even better than it looks.  Our Must Eats here are the Paella and Empanadas

 

4) GIOVANNI’S: The Italian pride of Fairborn is no stranger to garlic.  They promise to feature a Garlic and Gorganzola Stuffed Burger, and Garlic Pulled Pork Sandwich with Coleslaw, among other treats.  Our must eats here are the Italian Steamed Clams.  Chef Cassaundra Spaziani is bringing the good to the fest!

 

5) GYRO PALACE: How about a Middle Eastern spin on garlic?  Look now further than the masters at Gyro Palace.  They are featuring garlic hummus, chicken shawarma and falafel with garlic sauce.  Last but not least, their signature Gyros are MUST EATS, and will have a garlic Tzatki sauce.

6) KOWALSKI HOTS: The NY Hot dog guy brings his cart to fest with a garlic twist… literally.  He will feature garlic butter breadsticks and a Garlic Dog with Sauerkraut option.  He will have his regular hot dog menu available too.  Try the Zweigel Red Hots with coney sauce or the Hoffmans brand White Hots with Hoffman’s Mustard &onions.  These are Big Ragu and Hungry Jax’s faves.   Thank us later.

 

7) MAMMA DISALVO’S RESTAURANT:  Nothing says garlic like Mamma DiSalvo’s.  They will be featuring a pasta dish with olive oil, tomatoes, sauce and GARLIC!  They may even add a little asparagus.  Whatever the dish, make sure you try the family restaurant that has stolen Dayton’s heart for over 3 decades!  Bobby DiSalvo’s pasta dishes are MUST EATS !

8) MOHAWK FREESTYLE GRILL:  Beijing Garlic Street Rolls are the special feature, a menu item you cannot get anywhere in the USA except Garlic Fest this Sunday.We love Chef Aaron and his big bites with big flavors.  Our MUST EAT here is the Mohawk Burger.

 

9) RITTER’S FROZEN CUSTARD:  He will have his regular, delicious menu available… a great choice in the heat!  Look for the incredible sundaes that Daytonians have come to know and love.   Our Must Eat is the Peanut Butter and Chocolate Sundae!

 

10) SCRATCH CATERING:  Ahh yes, the inventive vendor, Scratch Catering.  What do they have in store?  Well just one item will make your mouth water :  Flash Fried Sweet Garlic Chili Chicken tossed in Garlic Parmesan Aioli Roasted Pepper and Sweet Garlic “Masa Tots” with Drawn Garlic Butter.  Need we say more?  When Chef Matt Hayden is around, get ready for some damn good food.

 

The delicious Ritter’s Frozen Custard will be on hand !

11) SONS OF ITALY’S HOLY CANNOLI BOOTH: It is like bigfoot, because not many have seen the Holy Cannoli.  It is a cannoli dipped in a guarded recipe of batter.  The cannoli is then deep fried until crisp.  It is warm, it is gooey, it feels like you’re breaking the law.  Come walk on the wild side and try a holy cannoli, or just try a regular cannoli .. you really can’t go wrong.

 

12) SWEET P’S HANDMADE ICE POPS:  Perfect in warm weather, look for the one time only dark chocolate garlic pops!  Handmade, hand crafted and one of a kind.  Try them, you’ll love them.  Our MUST EAT – the Nanna Cream pop!

 

13) TEXAS BEEF AND CATTLE COMPANY: A newcomer to the Dayton area, we are expecting some good brisket and pulled pork, offered in a garlic BBQ sauce !  We like the name and the swag, we are hoping for big things from this meat company!

 

14) THE SPICY OLIVE, OLIVE OIL STORE:  Flavor infused olive oils that you will not find anywhere else.  These oils and balsamics are some of Hungry Jax and Big Ragu’s favorite products on earth.  These incredible olive oils have kicked our cooking up a notch, and are must haves for your kitchen.  Look for the garlic lemon infused olive oil, along with many other garlic combinations.

15) VOLTZY’S:  The hamburger king of Dayton is here and he is sassy and garlicky.  Expect him selling some garlic burgers grilled with onions and topped with cheese.  As always, insults are still free. If personality was music, owner Rick Voltzy would be a whole brass band.

 

16) THE BUDWEISER BEER BOOTH:  The beer truck will be at the fest.  Come grab beer from noon-8pm, must be 21 and over.  ***Ask about buying a Garlic Fest Cup and saving money on refills.

 

2PM-4PM: ACOUSTIC MUSIC with DENNIS CHRISMAN.  Laid back music, with this local, talented musician is sure to be a treat.  Expect some classic rock and even a little country.

2:00PM: COOKING DEMO with “HUNGRY JAX” JACKIE SCANLAN:  This wife and mom of two, hails from Utica, NY and brings her own special influence to the Kitchen.  Growing up, this Italian girl was always in the kitchen and now as a mother, she is introducing her kids to culinary fun as well.   Jackie has written some published recipes and is a passionate cook who has often volunteered for the DLM School of Cooking/Culinary Center over the years.   She also part of Dayton’s favorite food blog, “Food Adventures.” Don’t miss her demo! Held inside the Bella Villa Hall, these free cooking demos will include step by step instructions to make some delicious eats with some highly guarded, secret recipes!

 

3:00PM: COOKING DEMO with CHEF JENN DiSANTO:  Here is your chance to see a pro at work!  Regarded as one of the best chefs in Dayton, Jenn owns her own catering business called “Fresco.“  Her style is fresh and her flavors are amazing.  It is an educational experience whenever she is around a kitchen.  Please don’t miss this demo, it is a rare opportunity to see one of the best in action.  Held inside the Bella Villa Hall, these free cooking demos will include step by step instructions to make some delicious eats with some highly guarded, secret recipes!

4:00PM: COOKING DEMO with CHEF LEEANNE HOUSE: Time to heat things up!  The spicy LeeAnne is known for her locally made Sriracha Sauce and Hot Honey, from her company, Housemade Sauces.  Working in the food industry her whole life, she is now Executive Chef of  Mudlick Tap House in Germantown.  She is also featured in Dayton’s popular food blog, Food Adventures as well as a partner in the new hot dog truck “Bad Dog.”.  Take this special opportunity to learn from her experience.   In this cooking demo, we bet she will spice things up.  Her nickname isn’t “Sriracha Mama” for nothing!  Held inside the Bella Villa Hall, these free cooking demos will include step by step instructions to make some delicious eats with some highly guarded, secret recipes!

 

5:00PM: DAYTON’S 2015 GARLIC PEELING AND GARLIC EATING CONTEST:  $100 goes to the first place winner of this contest.  They will also win the strongest breath..  The Big Ragu from Food Adventures will emcee and host this contest on the stage.  It will be a battle of the bulbs !

5:30PM – 8:00PM:  THE MENUS in CONCERT for FREE !!!!!  Classic rock, 60’s, 70’s 80’s cover music and more!  Watch the legendary, Cincinnati band play favorite party hits, while the lead singer kicks a few balloons while rocking the crowd!

NOTE:  You may want to bring a folding chair if you plan to stay for the free Menus concert.

Zombie Dogz Leads Friday’s Sons of Italy Food Truck Rally

Zombie Dogz Leads the pack of Food Truck into the Sons of Italy Grounds this Friday

Ladies and gentleman, boys & girls, children of all ages, this Friday evening marks the first ever Sons of Italy Food Truck Rally !

Bella Villa Hall is the place to be, as 15 Food Trucks plus a huge beer truck, will descend upon the Italian lodge on County Line Rd, to kick off  The Bocce Classic / Garlic Fest Weekend.  This promises to be a great chance for you and your family and friends to experience a Food Adventure, and even toss a bocce ball !

Dayton Most Metro, Sons of Italy and Food Adventures have the inside scoop on who will be there.  How?  Because we have put together one helluva lineup, as good as the All Star Game.  Oh …and there are beer trucks as well.

 

 

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— THE SONS OF ITALY FOOD TRUCK RALLY is FRIDAY JULY 17th from 5PM – 9PM

— The event will take place at 2625 COUNTY LINE RD, BEAVERCREEK, OH 45430 (The same place where the Italian Fall Festa takes place)

We have compiled some of the best, rarest, and tastiest trucks in the Dayton area to bring you a variety of deliciousness.  Some trucks plan to feature, special garlic inspired menu items !

3 Types of Tacos from Taqueria Mixteca: Chicken, Beef and Tongue

1) ZOMBIE DOGZ: A Dayton original and local favorite!  Try their “Grande Zombe” or their “Juan of the Dead” dog.  They will bring tears to your eyes, they are so delicious.  Get in line early, they are worth it, and the crowd knows it.  Huge dogs, good prices and toppings that will blow your mind.  Prepare your taste buds to get zombified, because they may feature a garlic dog of some sort!  This is Hungry Jax’s favorite food truck, hands down.

 

2) THE WICKED ‘WICH OF DAYTON: Fairly new food truck that started in March, 2015 and the buzz is they have good stuff.  Not much is known about this truck yet, my pretty…  But from the looks of their Facebook pics, the turkey, roast beef, ham sandwiches etc, have a local flair.  We are looking for some great eats from them this Friday.

 

3) TAQUERIA MIXTECA:  Brand new truck on the scene bringing the famous, authentic tastes of Mexico.  If you have not tried their food, it is distinctively different than any other Mexican food around.  This is street food you would find in Mexico City.  Holy cow, this will be a good match with a brew from the beer trucks!  Our MUST EAT– try any of their tacos, and experience an International event of cilantro, beef and onion.

4) SONS OF ITALY’S HOLY CANNOLI BOOTH: Not a truck, this booth has one item.. CANNOLI !  The “holy cannoli” is a deep fried cannoli. It is like bigfoot, it has rarely been seen.  This masterpiece is brought to you by the local Sons of Italy chapter.  If you are dieting, just have a regular cannoli, those will be available too.

 

5) SWEET P’S HANDMADE ICE POPS:  Dark Chocolate Garlic Ice Pops?  Answer: oh yeah !  Taste tested and customer approved, these special pops are sure to go fast!  If you want to wuss out, then try the  “Nanna Cream” or “Sea Salted Caramel” pops.  Enjoy the luxurious tastes!

 

6) THE PAINTED PEPPER:  One of The Big Ragu’s favorite trucks, this place makes a mean quesadilla.  Our big “must eat,” however is their wings.  Who knows what these cooks have in mind garlic-wise.  We are sure they will spice things up for the food truck rally!

7) MOHAWK FREESTYLE GRILL:  Chef Aaron will unleash his Asian influenced “Garlic street rolls.”  Will he have his mouth watering burgers as well?  We think you can bet on it, so make sure you grab one !

 

8) LADDER 11 STREATERY: Jimmie’s Ladder 11 has some of the best menu items in Dayton.  We love their burgers and Tom Turkey sandwich.   the biggest must eat is their Ladder 11 sandwich.  As of last night, they were still working on a top secret garlic infused menu.  Stay tuned for the creative talents of the Ladder 11 family!

 

9) KOWALKSI HOTS:  Simple hot dogs, that pop when you bite them.  Called red hots or white hots, they are Upstate New York brands like Hoffmans, Zweigels and more.  You can’t find these anywhere else except upstate New York….  That is until now.  Get them coney style or with authentic Hoffman’s mustard form Syracuse.  Must eats are a Zweigels Red Hot with coney sauce and a Hoffmans White hot, with Hoffman’s mustard sauce.

10) HUNGER PAYNES:  The king of the local croquette, Andrew Payne has promised his Buckeye Chips will be at the rally.  We can’t wait to see his spin on garlic, or his old originals like the MUST EAT salmon croquettes and the Peanut Butter and Jelly balls.

 

11) THE HORSELESS BUGGY EATERY:  Is it the fish tacos or the onion straw burger that melted our hearts.  Or was it the Philly Cheesesteak?  All are MUST EATS  from these guys and are prepared to order, fresh..

 

12) THE HAMBURGER WAGON:  The double burgers are the MUST EAT here.  For over a century, the burgers have remain unchanged… will they doctor them up with garlic for the rally or will they stick with the legend between 2 buns?  Come find out !  We hope they mess with the century old recipe!

 

Go Cupcake will be at the rally Friday with their gourmet cupcakes!

13) GO CUPCAKE:  One of Dayton’s dessert faves, she will be bringing her creations to Bella Villa Hall.  Please try her inventive and addicting treats.  The MUST EAT is the peanut butter cup cupcake.  A work of art for the eyes and the tummy.  Indulge, go cupcake, it’s your burfday !

 

14) FRONANA: This new business uses all natural, frozen treat using flavored bananas.  The result is some of the best tasting, guilt free stuff in the USA.  Try the chocolate, our MUST EAT, and see if you don’t dance like Elvis eating a peanut butter and banana sandwich.  Just look for the guy in the bow ties scooping the tastes.

 

15) BELLA SORELLA PIZZA:  We are so excited to have this company at the rally.  The dough and ingredients are so fresh, Bella Sorella is some of the best pizza in the state.  The Italian club is the perfect backdrop for this pizza pie, straight from the authentic, on site Italian style oven.  We can almost smell the basil, tomatoes and … GARLIC!

 

What an incredible variety of fantastic Dayton foods.  What a collection of tastes ! DON’T MISS OUT !

Take some time Friday night and visit the SONS OF ITALY FOOD TRUCK RALLY.  Taste all the flavors within a few steps of each other.   There will be plenty of parking on site, and it promises to be a fun, laid back atmosphere.  The Food Adventures Crew of Hungry Jax, TheBig Ragu and Chef House are proud to be partners of the weekend festivities.  You can even play bocce ball on the open courts for$10 an hour !

**NOTE: Keep in mind Saturday July 18th will be the Bocce Classic, and Sunday July 19th will be the full blown GARLIC FEST, featuring food vendors, beer trucks and THE MENUS will be performing a FREE concert!
