November 2, 2012 By Lisa Grigsby 5 Comments

Local entrepreneur  Shannon Thomas was watching the tv reports on the devastation caused by Super Storm Sandy and it really got to him.  He wanted to help.  He realized that since his company,  Four Ambition,   prints

He told a few of his friends, created the site and posted in on Facebook.  It’s been up 20 hours and Shannon says he already gotten over 55 oreders.  Orders have come in  from California, New Jersey and even someone from Germany has contacted him.  The site is going viral and here’s an easy way to help.  Order a t-shirt, share this article or just make a straight donation. This is a temporary store to raise some fast money for Red Cross so buy a shirt or just go straight to Red Cross’s website to get them the money faster. Shannon says he’ll keep it up for a few weeks or until the orders stop.  He did a similar fundraiser when the tsunami his Japan a while bak .
In talking with Shannon he said his biggest local customers are Cedarville University, Rockquest from Cincinnati and Welcome To College.  With the heart this young businessman has for helping others, I’d sure like to ask  anyone reading this that needs shirts, to please consider doing business with Four Ambition. ’83 Sweets Cupcake Wars Episode Reruns Thurs, Nov 1st

October 31, 2012 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

’83 Sweets girls, Alyssa and Julie with Cody Simpson at the winner’s party!

We’ve said it before, but just like a good episode of Cupcake Wars, the story is worth repeating!  Daytonian Alyssa Logan and her mother Julie recently competed on an episode of the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars and if you missed it the first time, it will be re-aired on Thurs, Nov 1st at 7pm. Since it’s already aired, we figure we’re not spoiling anything by sharing that ’83 Sweets was the winner of this episode featuring Cody Simpson.  Their cupcake display was featured at special fan event for rocker Simpson.

According to the Food Netork’s website, “each week on Cupcake Wars, four of the country’s top cupcake bakers face off in three elimination challenges until only one decorator remains. The sweet prize: $10,000 and the opportunity to showcase their cupcakes at the winning gig. Candace Nelson (owner of Sprinkles Cupcakes) and Florian Bellanger (chef and co-owner of online macaroon company MadMac) serve as permanent judges with a third rotating judge each week.”

This is the second trip to Cupcake Wars for Alyssa and her mom, who serves as her assistant. Their first trip was for the Tony Hawk Foundation Skate Parks which aired on July 8th of this year, in which the baking team made it to the finals.  Her carob cupcakes with avovado, sunflower butter frosting and candy-coated sunflower seeds made a big impression on this show.  You can check out some behind the scenes video here:  [yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AQ0FtcPmM4&feature=youtu.be’]

Logan said she was picked to be on the show among thousands of applicants, and believes her 1980s-themed bakery is what set them apart.  She thinks her small town

vibe really made a difference in her being cast, even though she initially thought it might put her at a disadvantage.  Logan says she’s a fourth generation baker, who learned to bake at her Grandmother’s side.  “The aromas of baking cakes, cookies and pies remind me of her, and it makes me smile.  Our special time lives on through her recipes.”  Logan is especially proud to use fresh eggs from her mothers farm as well as many organic ingredients in her baked goods as possible.

’83 Sweets is a  home based bakery-delivery business that was opened almost 3 years ago.   You place an order and she delivers.  You can also order up cupcakes and other sweets on her etsy shop.  However with all the attention “83 Sweets is getting, we wouldn’t be surprised to hear an opening soon announcement….

Another local bakery, Moore Dessert Please, was also featured in this episode, which originally aired on Oct 21st, read about them here.

Dreaming Of Life After November 6th…

October 30, 2012 By Lisa Grigsby 1 Comment

Please help us welcome guest blogger Karen Kelly Brown to DaytonMostMetro.  A published author, former radio personality and currently marketing director for a fast food chain, Karen is also a motivational speaker and writes a regular column for other publications entitled “Bleached Blonde Mind”.
I really don’t know what I’m going to do.  I will totally go into withdrawals.  I mean I’m sure you feel it too – when you have something like this for so long, and then someone just yanks it away, how can we get over it?
My mailbox is stuffed full.  (Well actually my re-cycling bin is overflowing now.) The commercials are running more than the actual shows. (Thank goodness for DVR.) The signs in the yards and windows are more prevalent than the fall decorations that accompany them.
I am speaking, of course, of The Election.  Yes, I put it in caps.  It’s become a title.  An event.  A holiday of sorts.  And just like Christmas, when the actual votes have been counted and the signs put away, we’ll go back to a peaceful, boring existence.
One without annoying commercials and phone calls.  Some people may leave their signs up in their yards until Easter along with their Christmas lights – just to annoy their neighbors – but that’s another story.
I admire those that feel strongly enough to canvass the town about their candidate, going door to door answering questions.  But really, it’s getting to be a little old when I open the door hoping to see my UPS guy with my Amazon order and it’s yet another volunteer, begging for my vote.  At this point, when my doorbell rings, I’d rather be buy two dozen bags of popcorn from a Cub Scout than answer questions or convince the person that yes, I really do know who I am voting for and no, no matter how much you slam the other party, my mind can’t be swayed.
Seeing as how Ohio seems to be the state that is keeping the country hanging on by a thread, I’m thinking maybe we should take advantage of this somehow.  If we truly are the last remaining swing state, then how about a little motivation to vote for your candidate?  A box of chocolates?  A bottle of wine?  A nice little lunch where you and I sit and chat and I don’t listen to you tell me why I should vote the way you want me to? Ok, so if that sounds too much like a bribe, then how about this?  You pretend to ring my doorbell.  I’ll pretend to answer it.  You pretend to drone on and on about how horrible the other candidate is (not one of these people has said why their candidate IS good, just why the other one is NOT), I’ll pretend to agree with you and then we can all go our happy separate ways, and I’ll go vote on November 6th just like I planned to.  How does that work for you, Mr. or Ms. Canvasser?
The candidates’ names are being thrown around so much that my 1 ½ old granddaughter picked up a pot holder and said “Mitt?”  I was kind of hoping her first word would be Grammy.  Sigh.
Well, it is almost over.  No matter what the results, we will suck it up and deal with it and pray that our country will keep moving in the direction of improvement and strength.  And maybe a little of that “Indivisible” thrown in there for good measure.
And remember the Golden Rule: “Thee that does not vote, cannot complain for the next four years.”

13th Annual All You Can Eat Chocolate Party

October 25, 2012 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

Once a year The Bellbrook Chocolate Shoppe opens their doors to guests to join them for a  rare opportunity to taste all the sweets in the kitchen of their place at Cross Pointe Center.  This  year it takes place on Sunday, Oct 28th from 4 -6pm.  Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door and will provide mammograms for the under/served and under/insured.
Owner Betty Blose attributes the popularity of her chocolates to the fact that they are handmade with her “signature” blend of milk and dark chocolate to create varieties that include creams, truffles, enrobed and molded items. It’s the only blend sold at the family’s Centerville store, and they use this rich chocolate to create everything from chocolate heart-shaped boxes filled with strawberries dipped in chocolate and cakes made of layers of shortbread cookies, iced with chocolate, to their Bellbrook pretzel, a pretzel rod dipped in caramel, rolled in toffee pieces and finally dipped in chocolate.

Although it seems too good to be true, dark chocolate can actually be good for you! When consumed in moderation, this delicious treat has some powerful health benefits. Following are three of the major reasons to indulge:

1. It can help prevent heart disease: Like tea, dark chocolate contains flavonoids, which are compounds that act as antioxidants. Flavonoids protect cells from harmful molecules—called free radicals—that are produced when the body breaks down food or is exposed to sunlight or smoke. Free radicals can cause cell damage that leads to heart disease. Flavonoids can also lower blood pressure and reduce LDL cholesterol (i.e., the bad cholesterol) by up to 10 percent.

2. It can improve your mood: Dark chocolate stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that bring on feelings of pleasure. It also contains the chemical serotonin, which acts as an anti-depressant.
3. It can protect your skin: German researchers found that the flavonoids in dark chocolate absorb UV light, help protect and increase blood flow to the skin, and improve skin’s hydration and complexion.

For all of its health benefits, though, dark chocolate does contain a lot of calories. So, experts recommend sticking to no more than three ounces of the sweet stuff per day.

Cake Hope & Love- baking a difference in our community!

October 16, 2012 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

There’s a Beavercreek bakery that believes they can help change the world, one cupcake at a time.  For the last year and a half, owners Shannon Teague and Connie McFarren have been serving up sweets with a commitment to also serve the community.  Cake, Hope & Love’s name  is straight from  The Bible-  Corinthians 13:13: “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” Each month the shop picks a different charity to partner with and donates 20% of their profits to a community partner. Some of their past recipients include American Red Cross, Hospice of Dayton, Hope Foundation of Greater Dayton, Dominion Academy of Dayton, AFP and A Special Wish.

For the month of October they’ve chosen the AIDS Resource Center Ohio.  For each Red Velvet

Cupcake purchased this month Cake Hope & Love will donate to help fund the education and prevention efforts of ARC Ohio. “Connie and I both made the decision when we signed papers (for the new shop) back in January that we wanted to make sure that we were giving back as much as we got,” Teague said. “Changing the world one cupcake at a time,” Teague said. “That really seems to sum up what we do, just trying to change the world with what we have.”

You can stop by the bakery located at 490 N. Fairfield Road, Suite B in Beavercreek Tues- Thurs 10am – 6pm and Fri and Sat 10am -9pm.  The upscale bakery specializes in over the top cakes, gourmet cupcakes, novelty cake items, and gorgeous fondant work. They even offer free wi-fi, so you can take your lap top and work your way through their menu of flavors, which change daily.

Grab Your Mask for Dayton’s Party of Parties “MASQUERAGE”

October 15, 2012 By Lisa Grigsby 11 Comments

As charity fund-raisers go, the AIDS Resource Center Ohio’s Masquerage has earned a reputation as being an over the top, all out bash.  The masked ball was dubbed  Dayton’s Party of Parties by  Ron Rollins of the Dayton Dayton Daily News several years ago and  this themed event has continued to grow.  Started in 2002 by Square One Salon owners Brent Johnson, Doug Henderson and Josh Stucky at Therapy Cafe, the party has grown and moved across town, to such unusual venues like The Merc, The Foundry and it’s latest home- the Roundhouse at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

Designer Chris Newman

Hundreds of volunteers will spend the week transforming the two story white barn into a fantasy set, under the direction of designer Chris Newman, owner of Cheeky Monkey, an interior design and faux painting company.  Newman volunteered in 2009 to help with one room at the Circus themed event that year, as then stepped up the next year as the creative visionary behind the Heavenly Pleasures and Sinful Delights 2010 Masquerage.   In 2011 the ARC Ohio party celebrated a Decade of Decadence, bringing back some of  the scenery and entertainment of the past 10 years.

Masquerage 2012…Where Evil Can Be Tempting will pay homage to Vixens and Villains.  This theme was chosen to encompass a wide range of costume possibilities- from Gangsters and Molls of the 2o’s and 30’s, to B Movie Vixens, and without a doubt there will be some Disney villains like Cruella De Vil, Ursulas and  Maleficent.  While costumes aren’t required, over the years more and more of the crowd has gotten into the spirit, and  last year about 70% of the crowd were decked out. But the one thing that is required of all party guests is a mask, and whether you choose an elaborate professionally created head, a mardi gras mask or have one painted on, your options are endless.  Make up Artist Kelly Heuss explains “the painted on masks are the most comfortable, as often the plastic ones get pretty hot and sweaty when you’re dancing the night away. ”  You can make an appointment with Kelly  of www.airodynamic.net to get a mask painted on at Square One Salon, the Beauty Box and Mac cosmetics counters are also offering the service.

Cake Hope & Love’s Red Velvet Cupcakes will help raise $ for Masquerage.

What makes Masquerage more than just a dance party is the entertainment.  Over the years there have been Aerialists dangling from silk ropes, escape artists, contortionists, dance crews, fire dancers, knife throwers, and more. While ARC Ohio won’t reveal the line up for this year, they promise to continue the tradition of sexy, sultry and super eye catching performers.

And what’s a party without great food.  Chef Matt Hayden of Scratch Catering has created amazing munchies over the years and always has something tasty planned.  Cake Hope & Love will be featuring some sweet treats this year and has even gone a step further by offering to donate a a portion of all proceeds from the sale of their red velvet cupcakes from their Beavercreek store to ARC Ohio.

All  guests will be welcomed with a Jaegermesiter cocktail and Yeungling Beers and Buckeye Vodka are the barsponsors this year.  General admission tickets are $50, which is exactly what it costs ARC Ohio to administer one HIV test.  Testing is provided free to anyone who asks, and the test is a swab of the cheek with results in just 20 minutes.

If you prefer to attend Masquerage as a VIP, splurge for the Red Ribbon Lounge tickets, which include valet parking by Lexus of Dayton, face painting, all of your drinks, appetizers, entry into the 2nd floor lounge and the always coveted Swag Bag for $150.   Tickets can be purchased online  or at Square One Salons, Lexus of Dayton or Ghostlight Coffee. Tickets will be available at the event, but will cost $10 more there. The party starts at 8pm and runs til 1am, but the fun won’t end then, the official Masquerage After Party is hosted by MJ’s Cafe at 119 W. Third Street.

    Celebrating International Bacon Day

September 1, 2012 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

International Bacon Day is officially observed on the Saturday before Labor Day in the US.  Canada celebrates it the 2nd Sat in June and in the UK it’s in January.  The way I see it, bacon is stupendous enough to warrant these multiple celebrations!  To me the best bacon is thick cut, hickory smoked bacon, which cooks up straight and golden brown! How best to honor bacon?  Let me offer some suggestions:

    Chocolate Covered Bacon

    Ingredients

    • 12 thick-sliced bacon strips (about 1 pound)
    • 12 wooden skewers (12 inches)
    • 6 ounces white candy coating, chopped
    • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
    • 1 tablespoon shortening
    • Optional toppings: chopped dried apple chips, apricots and crystallized ginger, finely chopped pecans and pistachios, toasted coconut, kosher salt, brown sugar, cayenne pepper and coarsely ground black pepper

    Directions

    • Thread each bacon strip onto a wooden skewer. Place on a rack in a large baking pan. Bake at 400° for 20-25 minutes or until crisp. Cool completely.
    • In a microwave, melt candy coating; stir until smooth. Combine chocolate chips and shortening; melt in a microwave and stir until smooth.
    • With pastry brushes, coat bacon on both sides with melted coatings. Top each strip as desired. Place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets. Refrigerate until firm. Store in the refrigerator. Yield: 1 dozen.

    Bacon Infused Vodka

Fry up three strips of bacon. Add cooked bacon to a clean pint sized mason jar. Trim the ends of the bacon if they are too tall to fit in the jar. Or you could go hog wild and just pile in a bunch of fried up bacon scraps. Optional: add crushed black peppercorns. Fill the jar up with vodka. Cap and place in a dark cupboard for at least three weeks. At the end of the three week resting period, place the bacon vodka in the freezer to solidify the fats. Strain out the fats through a coffee filter to yield a clear filtered pale yellow bacon vodka. This makes one pint of Bacon Vodka.
If you don’t want to wait you can buy Bakon Vodka.  Though last I heard it wasn’t selling well in Ohio and the Ohio Division of Liquor Control put it on sale back in May, which often means it may actually be discontinued from the state stocking list by now. So it may take a roadtrip across state lines or even mail order to get your hands on some.

Or try some Bacon Infused Bourbon

Bacon wrapped hot dogs make perfect sense, especially for your Labor Day Cookout, and you may want
to have some Baconnaise on hand, just perfect to spread on a hamburger bun.  And then how about some Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies, Bacon Lollipops, and for a  crunchy, savory, sweet treat you’ll want some Bacon Peanut Brittle or maybe the Bacon Cheddar Popcorn will be more to your liking.
There are entire websites devoted to bacon, and some of the most unusual bacon items you can imagine:  bacon toothpicks, belts, bacon flavored coke, bacon scented air freshners and more.  I’m not kidding- check out some of these and these.

I’ll leave you with a recipe combining two of my favorite flavors:

     Dark Chocolate Bacon Cupcakes

    Ingredients

    • 12 slices bacon
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 2 cups white sugar
    • 2 teaspoons baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
    • 2 eggs
    • 1 cup cold, strong, brewed coffee
    • 1 cup buttermilk
    • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
    • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting

    Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble and set aside.
    2. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, 3/4 cup cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the eggs, coffee, buttermilk and oil. Stir just until blended. Mix in 3/4 of the bacon, reserving the rest for garnish. Spoon the batter into the prepared cups, dividing evenly.
    3. Bake in the preheated oven until the tops spring back when lightly pressed, 20 to 25 minutes. Cool in the pan set over a wire rack. When cool, arrange the cupcakes on a serving platter. Frost with your favorite chocolate frosting and sprinkle reserved bacon crumbles on top. Dust with additional cocoa powder.
I know, I didn’t even get into the bacon replacement – like turkey bacon- they’ll have to get their own day!
