We don’t monkey around.  Everyone who knows us, know we do things original and right.

Today, we announce one of the biggest and boldest Food Adventure dinners yet…. and it just happens to be at one of our favorite spots.  North China Restaurant in Centerville will host the “Year of the Monkey” Celebration dinner, with 10 courses of food !

Since 1987, North China Restaurant has been pleasing Dayton area foodies, with tastes of Mandarin and Szechuan cuisine.  May 19th they team up with our crew for an epic eating extravaganza!  From appetizers to entrees, this “Year of the Monkey Dinner” promises to be a throwback to 80’s Chinese American restaurants, with a touch of family style dining.

TEN COURSES OF MUST EATS AT NORTH CHINA: (sorry, no substitutions)

1)  SIZZLING RICE SOUP:  A light brothed soup with vegetables, rice and chicken.  A perfect start to awaken your taste buds and senses.

2) EGG ROLL: The best in Dayton, bar none.  Handmade, hand rolled, and stuffed with pork, cabbage and a touch of peanut dust.

3) CRAB RANGOON: Handmade, on site, this cheesey goodness should be dipped in sweet and sour sauce with a dash of soy sauce.

4) HONEY TERIYAKI GLAZED CHICKEN WING: The delicate sweetness, the savory deep fried morsels…. ’nuff said

5) MU SHU PORK:  A wrapped “Chinese burrito,” The wrapper is rubbed with a plum and hoisin sauce, and pork and vegetables are added, and the “tortilla” is gently wrapped and served.  One of the most special delicacy attractions at North China.

8) PEPPER STEAK ENTREE: Sauteed beef slices with onions and green peppers

9) KUNG PAO CHICKEN ENTREE: Cubed, stir fried chicken in a slightly spicy brown sauce

10) SHRIMP WITH VEGETABLE ENTREE: A lighter dish, served with broccoli, snow peas, water chestnuts and bamboo shoots.

Tom Hanks Fever + Cincinnati & Dayton’s MILES AHEAD at THE NEON!

We’re cleaning house this week!  On Friday, we will start two brand new films. First is Don Cheadle’s MILES AHEAD. This film was shot in Cincinnati and Dayton, and many filmmakers and actors from the region participated in the production (I even had the privilege of being an extra for a day back in 2014). In addition, we’ll open A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING – starring Tom Hanks. Dayton is currently quite excited about Hanks and his attachment to Wright State University. Interestingly, Stuart McDowell of WSU visited Hanks on the set of HOLOGRAM FOR A KING in Berlin. It was during this meeting that Hanks agreed to put his name on the new “Tom Hanks Center for Motion Pictures” at WSU. (Would you like to win an autographed poster? Keep reading.)

Synopsis for MILES AHEAD: “In the midst of a dazzling and prolific career at the forefront of modern jazz innovation, Miles Davis (Don Cheadle) virtually disappears from public view for a period of five years in the late 1970s. Alone and holed up in his home, he is beset by chronic pain from a deteriorating hip, his musical voice stifled and numbed by drugs and pain medications, his mind haunted by unsettling ghosts from the past.” (taken from Sony Classics) Shot in Cincinnati & Dayton, this improvisation on the life of Miles Davis is a treat for music lovers! Synopsis for A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING: This film is based on the beloved novel by Dave Eggers and directed by visionary director Tom Tykwer. “Cultures collide when an American businessman (Tom Hanks) is sent to Saudi Arabia to close what he hopes will be the deal of a lifetime. Baffled by local customs and stymied by an opaque bureaucracy, he eventually finds his footing with the help of a wise-cracking taxi driver (Alexander Black) and a beautiful Saudi doctor (Sarita Choudhury).” (taken from Roadside Attractions) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official website. On Monday, April 25 at 7:30, Gathr Films along with Tricia Rau-Hammond will present a one-time screening of the new documentary MILK. “Through an intimate and artistic lens, MILK brings a universal perspective on the politics, commercialization and controversies surrounding birth and infant feeding over the canvas of stunningly beautiful visuals and poignant voices from around the globe. Inspiring, informative, provocative and sensitive, MILK celebrates bringing a new life into this world with a strong call to action and reflection.” (taken from Press Notes) In addition to the screening, the evening will feature a raffle of prizes from Luna Blue’s Boutique. Advanced tickets must be purchased on the Gathr site by following this LINK. If tickets remain, they will be available at our box office one hour before the screening.

“The seniors from the award winning Motion Picture program at Wright State University are showcasing their thesis work at the annual BIG LENS FILM FESTIVAL. The film festival of new work is scheduled for May 1st, 2016 at 7:30. There will be work from Joe Cook, Alan Lewin, Mitch Centers, Sydney Waltz, Brian Roll, C. B. Hovey, Jessica Barton, Michaela Scholl, Eric Risher, and Liz Lowe. Past participants in Big Lens have won awards at festivals such as Slamdance, Student Academy Awards, and Sundance.” (taken from press notes) Tickets are $7 and can now be purchased at THE NEON’s box office.

Thursday, May 5 at 7:30 has been reserved for a showcase of student work from Stivers School for the Arts. I’ll have more details for you soon!

The Music Power Conference

The Dayton music community is coming together in a way that we’ve never seen before. Local music experts are volunteering their time and knowledge to benefit musicians and bands in the area through the first ever Music Power Conference, being held this May. The sole purpose of this conference is to bring all those together, who are contributors to the music scene (artists, venues, media, agents, producers, etc.), and to work on a common goal: “To enhance the visibility for artists with higher venue attendance, and to facilitate a process of reaching the consumer in a proven strategic marketing effort and not in a hopeful manner.”

This one day, all-day event is absolutely packed with music business keynotes, panels, clinics, workshops, and one-on-one mentoring. Attendees with have the tremendous opportunity to learn new ways of approaching audience development, and overall become more successful in the music industry, both locally and at large. For local musicians, this is a “don’t miss” event!

GarlicFest Returns with Bocce Classic July 15-17th

The faint smell of garlic is in the air!  Today being National Garlic Day, it gives Dayton Most Metro the perfect opportunity to announce that GarlicFest is returning this summer to the Sons of Italy’s Bella Villa Hall.  We are again partnering with the John Pirelli Lodge for this popular event.  Food Adventures is honored to be helping with the festivities. The same weekend also features the annual bocce ball tournament called the “Bocce Classic,” which is in its 22nd year.

The Bella Villa Hall venue is located at 2625 County Line Rd. in Beavercreek, the same place the Italian Fall Festa is held.

The big weekend will feature:
A huge Food Truck Rally Friday, July 15th
The Bocce Classic Tournament, July 16 -17th
The Garlic Festival, Sunday July 17th.

One new attraction will see local celebs, and Up Dayton groups square off Friday Night, July 15th in a “Beginner Bocce Bash.” A Single elimination bocce tournament with cash prizes for the top 3 teams.  Just $40/team to enter.

The weekend will be filled with Food Vendors, Garlic Vendors, and Craft Vendors.  There will be a booth for the deep fried “Holy Cannoli.”  

There will be soft drinks, beer, and more.  There will be bocce ball, and the Garlic King and Queen.  Chef House and Hungry Jax from Food Adventures, will be hosting cooking demos with garlic inside the hall. Weezy’s Garlic, Spices and More will be there with all kinds of garlic goodies for you to buy!  Don’t forget the Garlic Eating Contest with host the Big Ragu and a Live Band !

With so much to do and so much to eat, you may have to make a couple of trips back during the weekend….

ThinkTV GreatTV 40th Anniversary Auction Begins Tonight!

Inside the ThinkTV Studio on South Jefferson Street in Downtown Dayton

The 40th annual ThinkTV GreatTV Auction starts tonight, Monday, April 18, 2016 at 6 PM and will be broadcast live on ThinkTV 16 and ThinkTV 14 until its conclusion on Saturday night, April 23, 2016. The auction broadcast will start at 6 PM each night. Proceeds from the GreatTV Auction help support ThinkTV’s many educational services including early childhood and K-12 educator workshops, teacher professional development and ensures that ThinkTV will continue to provide greater Dayton with award-winning PBS programs like the recent two part documentary series Jackie Robinson by filmmaker Ken Burns plus locally produced series and specials.

ThinkTV Studio-3Goods and services available on the auction block include sports memorabilia, jewelry, ticket packages from Dayton performing arts organizations, travel, tuition grants, works of art and much more.

I recently visited the ThinkTV offices and studio on April 8, 2016 for a short tour/photoshoot with Isaiah Ashba, Manager of Events & Projects for ThinkTV. “Celebrating our 40th Anniversary is really a tribute to our community- the support we receive each year, hundreds of donors and volunteers are truly the ones that make the GreatTV Auction such a special event for us. 450-500 volunteers dedicate around 3,800 hours,” said Ashba. In addition, hundreds of local businesses and national companies have donated thousands of items in support of the auction.

“The GreatTV Auction is very much a volunteer-driven event. We have a crew of volunteers who have been writing copy for the auction items every Saturday since January,” said Operations Committee volunteer Jessica Singleton.

Here’s some information about the Huffman Prairie Flying Field via the National Park Service’s website.

When the Wright brothers returned to Dayton, after their historic first flights at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903, they looked for a suitable flying field closer to home. Dayton banker, Torrence Huffman allowed the brothers to use his pasture, which was located eight miles northeast of Dayton, rent-free. Here in 1904 and 1905, through a series of unique experiments, the Wright brothers mastered the principles of controlled, powered flight and developed the world’s first practical airplane.

In 1904, the brothers made 105 flights, totaling 49 minutes in the air with their 1904 Wright Flyer II. With this flying machine, they made the first turn and the first circle in the air. They also employed a starting derrick for the first time and Wilbur set a new distance record.

Wright Flyer II

When the brothers returned to the Huffman Prairie for the 1905 flying season, they brought along an improved machine, the 1905 Wright Flyer III. This flying machine, which evolved throughout 1905, could bank, turn circles, and make figure-eights. On October 5, 1905, Wilbur piloted the plane for a world record of over 24 miles in 39 minutes. About two weeks later, the brothers ended their experiments for 1905 feeling that they now had a practical airplane that they could market. In the 1905 flying season, the brothers stayed aloft for 262 minutes in just 50 flights.

The Wright brothers returned to Huffman Prairie Flying Field in 1910. The field was used by their new business, The Wright Company, as a testing ground, flying school, and home to their exhibition team. The Wright Company ceased use of the flying field in 1916.

Today, Huffman Prairie Flying Field is located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990.

The 1905 Wright Flyer III can be viewed inside the Wright Brothers Aviation Center at Carillon Historical Park and is the only fixed wing aircraft to be designated a National Historic Landmark.

Submarine House Crowns Champ, Announces Expansion

A big crowd watched the Super Duper Cheesesteak finals Saturday afternoon at The Beavercreek Submarine House.   Of course your source for Dayton food scoop, Food Adventures was on hand.  After an hour of build up, they brought out the cheesesteaks like the Star Wars “Imperial March.”

The crowd grew silent, the judges looked at the stopwatch.. and GO.. the contest was on.  Nine Champions from each individual Submarine House store around Dayton, were now facing each other in an “eat-off” that has become an annual tradition.

The Super Duper Cheesesteak Challenge is where you must eat a 16 inch long Super Duper Cheesesteak in under 16 minutes.

“Super Duper” in Submarine House language means a 16 inch cheesesteak with triple the meat, triple the cheese, and the “works” toppings.  The works is onions, mushrooms & peppers cooked with the steak, mushrooms, and topped with cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato and hot pepper relish.

NO SUBSTITUTIONS, NO CHANGES, you must eat the sandwich “as is.”  This challenge is a true Food Adventure!  Not for the squeamish, this contest is fast paced.  Don’t blink, or you could miss the finish !

As the nine contestants took their first bites, 3 leaders emerged, 2015 champ Aaron Smith, 2013 champ Andrew Oakes and 2014 champ Clayton Naylor. They chomped, they chewed, and almost spewed, but instead washed it down intermittently with water.

Now the scoop on what happened next…..

 

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

Submarine House’s 16 Inch Super Duper Cheesesteak

— The Super Duper Cheesesteak Challenge benefits Dayton’s Children’s Hospital.  The Submarine House owners, Jason and Brody Danner, started the event by presenting a check in excess of $15,000 to the hospital’s charity fund.  What an incredible donation.

— Andray Simmons, a young man who is the goodwill ambassador from Dayton Children’s Hospital was introduced to the crowd.  Andray is battling sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder.  He thanked the crowd for the charity support, and the whole place erupted in applause.  A touching moment for the crowd and Andray, who was there with his family.

— More money was given away as they drew a $500, $1,000 and $10,000 cash prize for 3 different, lucky Submarine House customers!  It was insane!

— Then came the eating contest… Judging the contest were Chef House and the Big Ragu from Food Adventures, Lisa Grigsby from Dayton Dining, Brian Jarvis from Beavercreek City Council, WHIO’s Larry Hansgen, K99’s Frye Guy, and finally Sallie Taylor, Zac Pitts, and Katie Kenney from Living Dayton TV show.

— The winner was …. ANDREW OAKES, from the Centerville store, with a time of 1 minute, 36seconds.  Andrew becomes the first ever “two time” champ.  A close second was Clayton Naylor and close third was Aaron Smith.  Both men were literally a few seconds away from winning.  Trophies were passed out, photos were taken, and interviews made.

— SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:  Jason and Brody Danner shared the information with us, and Larry Hansgen announced to the crowd… Submarine House will be EXPANDING.  The Centerville Submarine House is moving to a larger location on 725 where the old Blockbuster Video was located.  There will be a Submarine House opening up in Huber Heights in the old Fifth Third branch at 5376 Taylorsville Road.  (((BOOM! A Food Adventure is gonna take place there soon !)))

So that’s it folks, another year of cheesesteaks in the record books.

As the fans and “paparazzi” left the building, we all promised to do it again next year.  In the meantime, order a Super Duper Cheesesteak for yourself.  There is a reason they call it “16 inches of heaven.”

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a Donut !

Look, over at Centerville Stadium, caped superheros of all sorts are descending on the track for a 5k / 10k Walk/Run this Saturday, April 16th!  They are able to leap a dozen pretzel donuts in a single bound.  They are the runners/walkers for this special event.

Dubbed the “Bill’s Donut Superhero Run,” this walk/run event is for kids and adults.   Most importantly it benefits a local charity, the Dayton, Ohio Affiliate Chapter of “A Special Wish Foundation, Inc.,” covering Montgomery, Darke, Mercer, Miami, Greene & Shelby Counties.

The event allows families to participate together, or just kids, or just adults.   Who is your favorite super hero?  Green Lantern?  The Flash?  Wonder Woman? Who will you dress up as?

Join the fun and come dressed as your favorite super hero.  Kids go crazy for this stuff, and what a fun way to promote healthy exercise in their lives.   You even get to have some world famous Bill’s Donuts after the race, as well as Mikesells chips, bananas, and grilled hot dogs.  What a fun Food Adventure!

Super heroes get hungry too, ya know.  Plenty of bottled water will be available for re-hydration of our super powers after the race.

What is your favorite donut?  Blueberry?  Long Johns?  Persian Nuts?  Maybe even stop by for more Bill’s Donuts on the way home, around the corner from the stadium.

Mobile Boutique Makes Its Debut

Dayton Most Metro has exclusive first scoop on a new mobile boutique that is ready for business.

“Bon Voyage Boutique” will bring Dayton’s first Airstream brand mobile shopping boutique to the masses.  In recent years, mobile boutiques have become more popular.  Owner Jacquie  Powell has been obsessed with this concept for a while.  She had searched and searched for the perfect mobile unit.  Jacquie found the Airstream in August after searching all over Ohio, North Carolina, and Indiana.

Ready for business

Then the work began.  Her and her team gutted it down to the studs. While Jacquie did much of the work, she used local carpenter Ryan Spencer to transform  into a the Airstream into a shop.   Ashley Powell of Luken Interiors was in charge of design.  Finally, Brett Walker from Asher’s Car Detail, has polished the “camper.”  Jacquie told us there are many people to give credit to, that helped make her dream come true.

Bon Voyage Boutique will feature women’s fashions purchased in New York during fashion shows.  From clothing and shoes, to jewelry and accessories, the selection will be fun and fashionable.  Jacquie makes sure all the products are American made.  She chose only to carry American made because as a retailer she feels it is her responsibility to provide ethically sourced and eco friendly fashion. Eventually,  Bon Voyage Boutique would like to become a “fair trade company,” meaning their products are socially and environmentally sustainable.  Jacquie’s goal is to spread awareness about the fashion industry and the effects it has globally.

Bon Voyage is currently booking private parties, also doing rallies and festivals in the Dayton/Cincinnati area.

For so many Daytonians, a dream is being realized…a vital, vibrant and vivid city! The amazing turnaround is all most too much to believe, but cities everywhere are taking notice. “You have to go back to the 90’s and the formation of the Downtown Dayton Partnership  to really see a beginning in all of this,” says Mayor Nan Whaley, beaming as she speaks of the turnaround town. “Their vision along with 2010 Greater Downtown Plan really got things rolling.” The plan was set up to make Dayton a LWP (live.work.play.) city. “I feel that people are discovering that Dayton is a authentic town, a genuine place where people are now believing in their city. We came off of 10 truly rough years, and we have developed a plan to maintain growth for the next 20. Through this vision, and a hard-working city commission, we have seen a boost in small business and housing.”

Housing is what so many Daytonians are impressed by. Builders are finding it hard to keep up with demand. You cannot visit downtown without seeing new housing, apartments, and lofts. “Our Water Street project is the fastest leasing project we have ever had.” said Jamie Moore of Crawford-Hoying corner-renderingDevelopment. “Dayton is alive and on-fire!” And the developer said, ‘there is more to come…’ but remained hush-hush about details. “It’s exciting, really exciting!” he teased.

What are other Daytonians hoping for? “People want shopping, a grocery, and more local restaurants.” Whaley added, “As people move downtown, the demand increases and businesses follow. The Dragons Ballpark was instrumental in the riverfront growth. So many people investing in the community over time has paid off. It caused the city to get more aggressive about customer service and communication. The city’s reputation has been buoyed by the change in the level of services.”

-3Looking around you see what the mayor speaks about. Just about every month, new businesses are making their mark downtown. Restaurants like Arepas and Corner Kitchen;  breweries like Dayton Beer Company and Barrel House; and shopping like Confetti and Eclectic Essentials now dot the urban landscape. Services are on the rise as well. “The Cannery will be at retail capacity for the first time in it’s history.” says Chrissie Jacobs, the leasing agent for the project. “Our property will play host to yoga, video production, printing services, a florist, a theatrical company, a photographer and a salon.” Great news for the newcomers to the city. “Our residential component is at 97% as well.”

Mayor Whaley sees a strong, successful future. “We have changed out tune from ‘we can’t do anything about it’ to ‘let’s get these problems fixed and continue to improve our city.” What does she see in the near future? “The kayak park is a game-changer. Having more recreation on-and-around the river benefits everyone. The talk of a resurrected Arcade has people so excited, and we are all cautiously optimistic, but that process will be slow and phased in as developers see fit. Of course, the housing boom will continue with more retail on ground floors and residents living in all kinds of unique living spaces.”DSC_0250_1024

Perception has definitely changed. “Real estate downtown is red-hot.” Says Denise Swick, local realty expert. “People are buying properties in the city at a maddening pace. It’s hard to find real estate for buyers, a great problem to have!” Swick says it renews a faith in downtown living.

In all of this, probably most important is the pride Daytonians are gaining. “Citizens are betting on their city for the first time in a long time, ” says the Mayor. “They love Dayton, and Dayton Pride is alive and well!” You can truly feel the pride, the joy and excitement. Downtown Dayton….city, city BANG! BANG!

Here’s some information about Dave Hall Plaza, which also happens to be the future site of the Levitt Pavilion in 2018.

Dave Hall Plaza, dedicated in 1971, was named for Dave Hall, former Dayton City Commissioner from 1963 to 1965 and Dayton Mayor from 1965 until his retirement in 1970. Festivals such as the Dayton Jazz Festival, Dayton Blues Festival, Dayton Rock Festival, Dayton Reggae Festival and AleFest Dayton all take place at Dave Hall Plaza.

They’ll Keep the Light on for You

Into the Ether, the current exhibition featuring contemporary light artists at the Dayton Art Institute, Villareal - Starinvites you to interact with the art. While there are some actual hands-on opportunities, around every corner you’ll engage in a very personal experience. Whether it’s dual holograms that offer a different experience for each viewer based on their own height and distance from the piece or a work where the colors are plugged into a randomizer to guarantee a unique show for each viewer – this exhibit is always changing and created especially for you.

When we visited, a few favorites of our group included:

  • An LED star to welcome you; it’s immediately clear this exhibition is active and alive.
  • An opportunity to put yourself in the middle of the art – and even change the colors of the light reflecting all around you. Texture, light and shape all blend together.image1
  • A large screen with pixels that fall like snow, until you notice that those pixels are clumping into shapes. Eventually, an eery image starts to appear – and it’s the people in the room! (pictured, we went meta by performing our own version of The Scream).

Surprise bonus: a lot of the more handy (and hands-on) visitors during our tour were able to get up close and explore just how the art and technology blends together. With this innovative blend, it’s the perfect trip for STEM (or – STEAM!) students who want to think about art/technology differently. Or – a perfect night out for the couple with one left-brained partner and one right-brained partner; this offers a little something for everyone. Plus – you get to play with light-up blocks at the end of the tour (and even buy a set in the gift shop if you’re inspired).

TODAY, April 9, 2016 at 4 PM, the Cincinnati Reds Class-A affiliate Dayton Dragons will play the home opener of their 17th season taking on the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Opening Day at Fifth Third Field in Downtown Dayton. As of this writing, the Dragons dropped their 2016 Midwest League opener Thursday night 7-1 and second game Friday night 9-4, both losses to the Bowling Green Hot Rods on the road.

There’s plenty of talent to check out on this season’s roster including the Reds’ 2015 #1 draft pick, catcher Tyler Stephenson, who was the fourth highest-drafted high school player in the nation last June, first baseman James Vasquez, pitchers Ty Boyles and Tanner Rainey, center fielder Narciso Crook, second baseman Shed Long, third baseman Brantley Bell (son of former MLB player & coach Jay Bell) and shortstop Cory Thompson, who played baseball back in his home state of South Carolina with Shoeless Joe Jackson’s great great grandson.

The 2016 Dragons will be led by first year manager and former MLB shortstop Dick Schofield (preceded by José Nieves), new pitching coach Derrin Ebert (preceded by Tom Browning), third year hitting coach Luis Bolivar and second year catching coach Corky Miller.

Opening Day Festivities

The Dragons Opening Day game will feature great entertainment for fans of all ages. The National Anthem will be performed by WiiildFlower, a singing trio featuring local teenagers Jordyn Mitchell, Kennedy Cook, and Drea Wallace, winners of the Dayton Daily News national anthem contest. A Dayton Woman, & Her Macarons!

Katia, Owner of Redémarrage Patisserie

This is the story of a meticulous, local foodie, who developed an obsession with the French Macaron, and took matters into her own hands.  Her name is Katia, and she is the owner of a local baking business, called “Redémarrage Patisserie.”   She grew up in Beavercreek and being of Lebanese descent she is familiar with good food and parties.  She also loves to travel.  In other words, she is a Food Adventurer in her own right.

After visiting various pastry shops like Laduree in New York, a fascination with macarons evolved.  After trips to Paris, she found more macarons and fell deeper in love with them.

 When Katia returned to Dayton, she tried to introduce her friends to macarons, but the local options were either non-existent or not authentic.  She researched macarons, the baking, and for a couple years tweaked and narrowed down her distinct recipe.  Pretty soon, Katia had her own baking business and named it Redémarrage Patisserie.

They were at the Sweet Treats Festival and invited the Food Adventures Crew to a private tasting… and we are big fans.

Authentic French Macarons

These French Macaron cookies are like nothing we have ever tried before.  So, what goes into making these authentic treats, which are some the best macarons for miles around?

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— What is a French macaron?  It is part cookie, part cake, part pastry. These delicate, artsy morsels are hard to describe.  Authentic macarons are identified through a hallmark along the filling and cookie called “feet.”  Macarons should also have an eggshell like crunch when you bite into them.  It should lightly shatter in your mouth.  Non-crunch, means not authentic macarons.

— The recipes at Redémarrage Patisserie have to be exact.  But that is ok, because Katia admits she has a streak of OCD in her.  It is as much about chemistry as it is about baking.  Her products are gluten free and have only 5 ingredients: Egg whites, sugar, cream of tartar, almond flour, and filling.

— Katia has gone to great lengths to get the humidity levels in her home baking area just right, so the environment works for making macarons.  It is all about climate control, and she has the dehumidifiers to prove it!

A Coffee Flavored Macaron

— The macarons are little pieces of delicate art.  Some have brushed artwork on the cookie cover.  All are meticulously crafted into different flavors.  They are definitely a hand held Food Adventure.  So much work goes into creating them, you almost feel guilty eating them… and then you taste them and your guilt fades away.

— Redémarrage Patisserie typically sells the macarons for $2 each.  They are perfect for weddings, wedding showers, baby showers, birthday parties, and any event you want to class up, or impress your friends and family.   Katia suggests ordering between 1 to 3 flavors, and recommends the macarons be eaten within 24 hours, so they stay true to form.

We were lucky enough to try a sampling of the various macaron flavors and we have to share our favorites.  So without further delay, Food Adventures presents their “Must Eat” macarons from Redémarrage Patisserie.

— COFFEE FLAVORED MACARON: So delicate, yet the flavor takes over in a good way.  Creamy and dreamy, this macaron is a Must Eat if there ever was one.

— VANILLA BOURBON MACARON: You can make your own Bourbon Trail without leaving Dayton.  Just place a few of these macarons on a plate, and you will hear the accolades.  Rich, and filled with full deep flavor, this one is a winner.

— STRAWBERRY MACARONS:  Wait for it.. crunch! and yep, the surprise taste of strawberry jam inside.  Light and delicious, this macaron could be a favorite of any person with taste buds.

Here’s some information about Moraine Farm’s observatory from the Kettering Health Network‘s Moraine Farm brochure.

The observatory dome is one of the architectural highlights of the house. When built, the Warner & Swasey 7-inch refracting telescope in the observatory was one of the first privately owned telescopes of its type in the world.

The laboratory just below the observatory houses a large arc slide projector that Colonel Deeds pointed out the window to project images of vacation photographs from glass lantern slides which had been colored by hand.
