Whether it is the relaxing country side ride, the friends and family we ride with, or the eventful Biergarten that often kicks off afterwards, we from the Twisted Pretzel community would like to thank you. all net proceeds will go to the local food banks and civic organizations within the community.

The Wright Brothers 2022 Cycling Classic is a fundraising cycling event for local Nonprofits to raise money and bring awareness to their important missions. Register Now for 2022 Great Miami Riverway Fishing Challenge

June 6, 2022 By Dayton937

The Great Miami Riverway is announcing that registration is now open for the third annual GREAT Smallmouth Bass Fishing Challenge to be held on the Great Miami River from June 18 to July 10. This family-friendly event is a catch-and-release, virtual fishing tournament, where anglers use the I-Angler app to register and send in their catches. This year there are two separate gear divisions – one for spin (conventional) and fly fishing.

Major sponsors include ReelFlyRod of Bellbrook, home to the nation’s largest inventory of premium fly fishing gear in the US; the North American Professional River Angler’s Association; and Dayton-based bait and fishing supply store Fishermen’s Headquarters.

The Great Miami River is Ohio’s best river for catching smallmouth bass, according to the number of smallmouth trophy-sized fish registered on the Fish Ohio database, the Ohio Department of Natural Resource program for recognizing significant catches for all species caught in Ohio waters. “The Great Miami is one of the best waterways to hunt for trophy-sized smallmouth bass in the region,” said Barry Puskas, Chief of Engineering and Technical Services for the Miami Conservancy District, and an avid angler.

“The largest smallmouth bass caught in the Great Miami River in the last five years measured out at 24.3 inches,” said Donnie Knight, a Troy resident and biologist with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. “Smallmouth bass are plentiful in the Great Miami River from March through October, so it’s a great time to encourage anglers to get out on the water.”

This year, we’re opening up the tournament to the fly-fishing community as well as conventional spin anglers. We welcome all anglers to join our fishing challenge and catch some smallmouth bass on the Great Miami River, Ohio’s first federally-designated Water Trail.

Tournament rules and information include:

  • The fishing challenge is open to all ages for both spin (conventional) fishing and fly-fishing divisions.
  • Registration fee is only $25.
  • Prizes will be awarded for 5 categories for both spin and fly fishing:
    • Largest Smallmouth Bass (1st, 2nd, 3rd place)
    • Random drawings for both spin (conventional) and fly-fishing participants who catch smallmouth bass in the following lengths:
      • 12”-13.75 inches
      • 14”-15.75”
      • 16”-17.75”
      • 18” and greater

For complete rules and to register for the tournament, visithttps://tinyurl.com/2022fishingchallenge

To download the I-Angler app to register for the Great Miami Riverway fishing challenge and record your catches, on your device, available on the App Store or Google Play:

An awards ceremony, sponsored by Lock 27 Brewing, will be held on Tuesday July 19 at 5PM at their downtown Dayton Brewpub

Participate in the Twin Valley Trail Challenge June 4th!

May 26, 2022 By Dayton937

Five Rivers MetroParks will host the Twin Valley Trail Challenge on Saturday, June 4. Participants in this free, noncompetitive event choose their own adventure by hiking any distance from 1 to 28.7 miles, following marked routes on the Twin Valley Trail (TVT), located in and connecting Germantown and Twin Creek MetroParks — one of the region’s most remote and pristine natural areas. The TVT Challenge is suitable for hikers of all ages and skill levels.

“We encourage hikers to make a personal goal rather than competing against other hikers to complete all 28.7 miles,” said MetroParks’ outdoor recreation coordinator and backpacking expert, Angie Sheldon. “No matter what your goal is, we’ll be there to support you with water and snack stations and shuttles in case hikers have met their limit for the day and want to head back without completing a loop.”

Day-of registration is open from 5:30 am to noon at the Twin Valley Welcome Center in Germantown MetroPark, 6910 Boomershine Rd. Those who plan to hike the full day on the trail will need to start no later than 7 am and bring a headlamp or flashlight for hiking during the early morning and evening hours.

At check in, participants will receive a trail map and other helpful info, including route options. Participants also are encouraged to download MetroParks’ free mobile app, powered by OuterSpatial, to access maps, locate amenities and more at metroparks.org/mobile.

Free camping at Germantown MetroPark is available on Friday and Saturday nights. Participants also can join fellow hikers for a post-challenge cookout on Saturday.

The TVT Challenge is presented by local hiking and outdoor advocacy group Dayton Hikers.

“The TVT Challenge is an opportunity for people to challenge themselves, and it’s a great event for all ages and experience levels,” said Dayton Hikers founder and avid local hiker Andy Niekamp. You can participate solo, as a group or with your family.”

The first 30 participants who arrive wearing a Dayton Hikers shirt will get priority parking closest to the registration and start and finish area.

The natural-surface Twin Valley Trail includes steep hills, open meadows and footpaths with varying terrain. Located just a 30-minute drive from downtown Dayton, the TVT is one of the longest hiking loops in the region, making it a resource for those who wish to train for longer excursions in addition to offering shorter routes for those who enjoy hiking in a remote wilderness area.

Other long trails that come through MetroParks include the 1,444-mile Buckeye Trail, which loops the entire state of Ohio, and the North Country National Scenic Trail, which stretches more than 4,600 miles from New York to North Dakota.

Learn more about the Twin Valley Trail and the Twin Valley Trail Challenge by visiting metroparks.org/twin-valley-trail-challenge.

Sleep in a tent on the Great Miami River!

May 22, 2022 By Guest Contributor

Guest blog by Deanna Bechtol, Miami County Visitor’s Bureau

Ready for an adventure that combines camping and floating on the Great Miami River? Look no further than Float Troy. It’s the only public floating tent experience in Ohio!

Float Troy is a series of floating tents anchored on the Great Miami River at Treasure Island Park. Guests sleep on the river inside of their own inflatable floating tent! This unique camping experience is perfect for those who want to take outdoor adventures to another level.

Troy, Ohio is an excellent destination for those who enjoy outdoor activities, but this is a unique experience altogether. Float Troy is the nation’s (and possibly the world’s) only public floating tent experience.

About the Experience

Before your imagination is carried away by thoughts of stray tents and daring rapids, Float Troy has employed several fail-safes to ensure your evening is a safe, memorable, and relaxing experience.

Your rental includes a raft to travel to and from the tent, oars, and life vests. While the space is tight, tents can accommodate two adults comfortably – or a maximum of four adults or two adults and two children.

Each tent has been securely tethered and anchored several times, so there’s no need to worry about floating away! Plus, the river levels are extremely shallow around the tents – only about 3 feet deep.

Be sure to pack lightly with plenty of sunscreen, water, bug spray, and flashlights. Guests should wear comfortable clothing and something they don’t mind getting wet or muddy.

Additionally, floating fire pits are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Guests can reserve an additional kayak or raft for exploring the area.

When you’re not hanging out in your tent or around the grill, explore the paved trails at Treasure Island and enjoy a brisk walk or a bike ride. Also located at Treasure Island, Smith’s Boathouse has a delightful menu of high-quality seafood, steak, and other seasonal options to satisfy those tastebuds.

With limited availability, tents rent from late June through early September. Visit the website for the most up-to-date information and rental availability.

The post The Float Troy Experience appeared first on Home Grown Great.
