New Thai and Japanese Restaurant in Miamisburg

February 6, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Last month Ariake Sushi Bar & Restaurant in Miamisburg was sold. The new owner Penn, is no stranger to Thai restaurants as she grew up in the family restaurant business.   This will be her second restaurant as she also owns Penn’s Thai Grille in Bellbrook.  The Miamisburg business has been renamed Thai Smile and Sushi Bar and will feature  sushi, homestyle Japanese  & Thai dishes, as well as sake. New signage will be coming soon.

The menu offers  savory Pad Thai and creamy curries and there is a sushi bar where you can watch the creation of  handcrafted sushi rolls.

I started my meal there with the Thai Appetizer Combo, which included 2 crispy spring rolls, 4 cream cheeses rangoon, 3 fried pot stickers, 1 egg roll served with sweet and sour sauce.

Penn shared that her favorite dish is pad thai, so of course I ordered it.  It’s Rice noodles stir-fried with egg, green onion, bean sprouts, carrots, homemade Pad Thai sauce, which is sweet and tangy, garnished with chopped peanuts.  You can order it with chicken, vegetables, tofu, beef or shrimp.  I chose the beef, shrimp combo which ran $19.99

We also tried the Bourbon Fried Rice which was grilled marinated ghicken cooked with homemade brown sauce along with fried rice tossed with egg, white/green onions, brown sauce) and sprinkle of scallions.

They are currently running a Special Welcome Offer for new customers where you can get $5 off your first online order of $20 or more with the code First5 – available exclusively on their website!
You can also follow them on Facebook.

Open Monday – Saturday from  11:00am – 9:00pm.

Check them out and tell them Dayton Dining sent you!

Dayton Voted on This Years Bloody Mary Champion!

February 2, 2025 By Dayton937

The ninth annual Bloody Mary Showdown, presented by RAD’S Bloody Mary Mix, who won our 3rd Showdown,  is now in the books.  Around 300 guests acame out to Top Of the Market this afternoon to sample tomato juice and vodka cocktails from 11 different vendors.  But they were was so much more than just those two ingredients. Spicy, fruity, dill pickle infused and even a ska themed breakfast cocktail were served up by the many creative bartenders on hand today at this event produced by Planned2Give.

As you can see from above garnishes played a big part in the drink and there were a lot of  cheese, peppers, salami,  bacon, citrus and even some cocktail shrimp.  Mudlick Tap House basically had a build your own garnish set up to compliment their dill pickle infused bloody mary.

First time entrant SushiNero was voted best garnish!  They created a banana leaf packet, fried a cocktail sausage and cut it to look like an octopus with a stuffed piquillo pepper and through the magic of molecular gastronomy they turned rum, lime and wasabi into pearls served on a spoon with their cocktail

Table decor also helped attendees choose which drinks to taste and get a feel for the bar/restaurants serving them, bringing in some of the flair and atmosphere from their business.

An

And when it came to table decor, the people declared that SushiNero was the best, giving them their second win of the night.

Newcomers to the event, Entropy Brewing Company, the newest brewery in downtown Miamisburg placed in the top three of the peoples choice.

First time competitor Sparky’s Lounge on Watertower Lane in West Carrollton,  placed amongst the most voted for of today’s bloody mary’s.  But  it seems no one was able to beat Loose Ends Brewing, which took home the three-peat, winning again with Mr. Kents Bloody Mary- named after the owner’s late father. It’s a house made mix w/ a bacon salted rim, candied bacon, deep fried deviled egg, sweet gherkins, pepper jack cheese cube and celery.

P2Give is already looking forward to the 10th annual event, which will happen Feb 1st, 2026. Mark you calendars and plan on being part of the fun! Now you don’t have to wait a year for P2G’s next event, The Dayton Donut Fest  is just around the corner, kicking off Feb 14th.  It’s a self guided tour of eleven locally owned donut shops.

Ric and Carla Wren Build Thriving Dickey’s Barbecue Pit

January 31, 2025 By Guest Contributor

The following article was featured in RestaurantNews.com.

Ric and Carla Wren Build Thriving Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Springboro, OH

Ric and Carla Wren, franchisees of Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Springboro, OH, have transformed their location into a vibrant family business and community favorite. Since purchasing the franchise in 2018, the Wrens, along with their son Chris, have turned their restaurant into a thriving operation that reflects their dedication to teamwork, quality food, and strong ties with the community.

“Our business operates like a three-legged stool,” said Ric Wren. “Carla, Chris, and I each bring unique strengths to the table. Carla and I run the operations together, with Carla also overseeing food quality — especially the meats — ensuring everything meets Dickey’s high standards. Chris handles day-to-day management. We rely on each other to keep things running smoothly — it’s truly a team effort.”

The couple’s success didn’t come without challenges. Neither Ric nor Carla had prior restaurant experience when they purchased the franchise after selling their healthcare company and spending a few years in retirement. Their determination, however, helped them overcome the learning curve. Ric took the lead in mastering operations, while Carla focused on ensuring the quality of the smoked meats and building relationships with customers to create a welcoming atmosphere.

“When people walk through our doors, we want them to feel like family,” said Carla Wren. “This isn’t just a business for us — it’s a way to build relationships and serve the community. That connection keeps customers coming back.”

The family’s commitment to service was tested during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite uncertainty, the community rallied behind them, making 2020 their most successful year yet.

“The support we received reminded us why we do what we do,” Carla said. “Our customers showed up for us in ways we’ll never forget.”

Ric and Carla have also made community involvement a cornerstone of their business. They sponsor youth sports teams, support school programs, and participate in local events, deepening their bond with Springboro residents. Their active presence in the community has not only earned loyalty but also helped expand their catering business.

“Ric and Carla’s story is a perfect example of what makes Dickey’s franchisees successful,” said Roland Dickey, Jr., CEO of Dickey’s Capital Group. “Their commitment to quality, their focus on relationships, and their teamwork have turned their Springboro location into a shining star within our system.”

Laura Rea Dickey, CEO of Dickey’s Barbecue Restaurants, echoed the sentiment, saying, “Ric and Carla have created more than just a business — they’ve created a gathering place for their community. Their dedication to their customers and their ability to make everyone feel at home is inspiring.”

The Wrens credit Dickey’s corporate team for playing a crucial role in their success. From training resources to marketing tools, corporate support has been an invaluable part of their journey.

“The resources and guidance from corporate have allowed us to focus on what matters most – growing our business and building strong relationships with our customers,” said Carla.

Looking ahead, Ric and Carla plan to focus on optimizing their Springboro location rather than expanding. “Our goal is to make this one location the best it can be,” Ric said. “We’re committed to continuing to serve our customers and community with excellence.”

Ric and Carla Wren exemplify what it means to be dedicated franchisees, turning challenges into opportunities and customers into family. Their story is a testament to the power of teamwork, resilience, and a commitment to making a difference through great barbecue.

Do Your Moo at Young’s Jersey Dairy

January 27, 2025 By Dayton937

Start practicing your MOOs now! We want to hear your best MOO! A good MOO will rewarded with Young’s Famous Homemade Ice Cream.

Give a great MOO at the Dairy Store Jan. 27 – Feb. 2, 2025 and you’ll earn a one dip upgrade for your dessert. For example, buy a one dip cone, MOO for us, and we’ll upgrade it to a two dip cone for FREE. Add a dip to your sundae, or upgrade your milkshake.
It’s up to you and your MOO! We’ve always been partial to cows at Young’s and their MOOs. We feel this promotion helps show solidarity with the cow nation. Best of all, it’s a fun way for you to earn your way to a dessert upgrade!

We won’t accept just any MOO. Our staff will be the judge. We’re not looking for loudness, but we are listening for creativity, tonal ability, and heartfelt MOOs.
Limit one MOO per person per day. Not valid with any other offer.
