THE BACK STORY: Ezekiel “Zeke” Burns (Chris Rock) is a detective with a lot of stress in his life. In addition to going through a divorce, he’s still living in the shadow of his father Marcus (Samuel L. Jackson), the former South Metro Police Captain. Throw in the fact he also turned in a dirty cop and took a bullet when his backup failed to arrive and Zeke understandable seems grizzled well beyond his years … Which should in turn explain why he has little to no desire to train a rookie detective in William Schenk (Max Minghella).
But when Zeke (with his new partner in tow) is called to the scene of what was suspected to be a homeless man hit by a subway train, he quickly learns that he now has an even bigger problem to deal with: A possible disciple of the former John Kramer, the serial killer known as Jigsaw …
THE REVIEW: What happens if you were to upgrade the acting of the past Saw films while retaining the – with apologies to All Elite Wrestling – blood and guts for which the franchise is known? Spiral answers that question: You get a movie that satisfies America’s longstanding obsession with serial killers while delivering a dramatic stage interesting enough to make you keep watching between the absolutely gruesome – and yes, I do mean gruesome – murders.
Say what you want about Chris Rock’s past movie work; the man has quietly been putting in work both in front and behind the camera for several years – and Spiral is his arguably his finest acting performance to date.
Spiral doesn’t work with Rock’s nuanced performance. Even when his hardened detective cracks the occasional joke, it doesn’t feel like you’re watching the stand-up comic that has been slaying audiences for the better part of four decades. Instead, you are watching a man battling inner and external demons, both of which come to a head once he starts seeing bodies of people he has a connection to start to pile up. If you were to remove the torture devices, it wouldn’t be a Saw spinoff (obviously), but it would still work as a serial killer drama – and that’s a testament to how far both Rock and longstanding Saw franchise head Darren Bousman have come.
If there was one nitpicky problem with Spiral, it would have to be part of the ending. Without going into detail, the “too cool to be bothered” explanation by the killer takes away a bit from the dramatic crescendo to which the film builds; given their motivation, this moment needs to be a bit more impassioned as opposed to coming off like “Oh yeah – I killed these people … You want some coffee?” Throw in one seeming hole that may or may not have been left open to some sort of sequel and it takes away a bit from the apex of the story, which is as over-the-top as you’d expect but mostly works … mostly.
But for a film that is arguably the best sequel of a franchise that most people would have been hard pressed to ever imagine upon the initial installment’s release, Spiral avoids going down one in fine, brutal fashion.

NOMADLAND Returns + FOUR GOOD DAYS with Glenn Close

This week, we’re holding both TOGETHER TOGETHER and STREET GANG: HOW WE GOT TO SESAME STREET – both of which our audiences are loving. That said, we’re adding a couple titles to the mix. After its “Best Picture” win on Sunday (and because we agree with Frances McDormand that it should be seen on the big screen), we’re bringing back NOMADLAND for a handful of screenings. We’re also going to pepper in some shows of FOUR GOOD DAYS – a new drama about a family dealing with addiction starring Glenn Close & Mila Kunis.

On Friday, we will also open two new films in our Virtual Cinema – a wonderful Icelandic film THE COUNTY as well as ABOUT ENDLESSNESS, the latest film from brilliant filmmaker Roy Andersson.

Pop Up Drive in Movie Theater Experience

Liftoff Entertainment has launched a new seriesWheels and Reels, a  Drive In Theater Experience Held at Top of the Market at 32 Webster St in Dayton, you can load up your car, grab food and beverages from the Market and catch a flick on the on a 40ft  Movie Screen. Owner Jay Nigro says,
“our goal is to host Covid friendly events. These events are almost a transition into what events used to be.  They allow you to get out of the house and attend an event in a safe manor. Tickets are based on parking spots not a per person rate. A single ticket allows as many people that can legally ride in the vehicle to enjoy the movie.”

May 6 – Back to the Future
May 13 – Jurassic Park – premium viewing parking spots are already sold out for this show.
Parking Lot will open at 7:30pm.  Movies will start 15 min after sunset (approx 8:45pm)

WSU Big Lens Festival To Be Held at The Drive-In

Wright State University’s acclaimed Motion Pictures program will present its annual Big Lens Film Festival Thursday, April 22nd at 8pm at Dayton’s Dixie Twin Drive-In.

For the first time, in order to accommodate COVID-conscious viewing requirements, the Big Lens Film Festival will take place outdoor, with audience members viewing from the safety of their cars. Big Lens has become an annual tradition in the regional film community as a celebration of the graduating students being showcased.

This year’s films are the culmination of up to two years of preparation and production – all of it made more challenging by an abrupt halt to production, and then the added requirements of following industry standards for COVID-safe conditions for filming, editing and preparing these premieres. The chance to see these films on a very large screen at Dixie Twin will be a joyful culmination to these filmmakers’ four years as students in the Tom Hanks Center for Motion Pictures.

 

Festival Director, Instructor of Motion Pictures Jeremy Bolden says, “This year’s Big Lens will have films from 2020 graduates, as well as 2021 graduates. Almost everything you’ll see on the screen was either finished, or entirely created during the COVID-19 Pandemic. A large part of the filmmaking process is problem solving, and our students have and continued to put in a tremendous amount of work to create content and tell stories that are important to them.”

The Disaster Mitzvah

Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures Chair, Joe Deer, says, “The Big Lens Film Festival is always a great event. But, this year is special, seeing a group of students that have banded together to make films while much of their industry has had to go on hiatus. I have such admiration for them and for their gifted faculty and staff, who have gone so many extra miles to make this event possible. I don’t think any of these filmmakers will ever forget this festival.”

Graduates of the Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures who have participated in this festival have gone on to win Emmy and Academy Awards and to lead the film and television industry in Southwest Ohio and the nation.

The Festival screening will take place Thursday, April 22nd, with gates opening at 7:00pm. The showings will begin a sunset (approximately 8pm). A suggested cash/check donation of $10 per person can be made at the gate. Patrons are expected to follow COVID precautions while viewing films at the Dixie Twin Drive-In

NEON NEWS: Judi Dench’s Newest Film + More Oscar Nominees

Though we’re holding onto everything we’re currently playing (FRENCH EXIT as well as the ANIMATED and LIVE ACTION OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS), we’re going to add quite a bit to the mix this weekend. On Friday, we will open SIX MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT- a spy thriller set days before WWII starring Eddie Izzard and Judi Dench. In addition, we’re adding a handful of screenings of the OSCAR NOMINATED DOCUMENTARY SHORTS.

In our Virtual Cinema, we’re adding two new films. THE MAN WHO SOLD HIS SKIN is nominated for the “Best International Film” Oscar this year, and ROSE PLAYS JULIE is a thriller that speaks as a kind of companion piece to PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN.

The Courier a solid if-not familiar Cold War drama best suited for older audiences

THE BACK STORY: Greville Wynn (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a simple businessman, nothing more, nothing less. Then his life is turned upside down when a MI-6 agent (Angus Wright) and a CIA operative (Rachel Brosnahan) approach him with a request: Get information from would-be Russian defector Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) about the Soviet supply of nuclear weapons to help prevent a third world war at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
As long as Greville and Oleg don’t get caught by Gribanov (Kirill Pirogov) and/or any other KGB agent, for that matter, everything should be just fine …
THE REVIEW: The Courier is fine. Cumberbatch commits to the role of Greville well, playing him with fish out of water sensibility quite well while Ninidze is convincing as Oleg. Likewise, Jessie Buckley is a classic mid-20th Century housewife as Sheila, demure yet confident and guarded given her husband’s past indiscretions only to reveal a softer side as the story progresses.
In similar fashion, Brosnahan is steadfast in her mission as CIA operative Emily Donovan, playing well against the traditionally reserved British gentleman that is Angus Wright’s Dickie Franks. And then there’s Kirill Pirogov’s performance as Gribanov, a man who is not so much a villain as a man committed to his cause, just as the American forces that are convinced they are right, so is he.
So what then, keeps The Courier from excelling to higher heights? It could be the familiarity of the entire affair (the Cold War has been cinematic fodder for 70 years). It could also be the familiarity of the characters (the tension between husband and wife in Greville and Sheila, the cat-and-mouse set ups as the story progresses with the foreshadowing being fairly heavy to the point it feels a bit too predictable. This does change, however, at about one hour into the story, but there is one grandiose moment that feels a bit to “made for the movies” for its own good.
In short, The Courier is a solid historical drama for those already interested in the subject matter that pays respect to its subject … It just lacks something inherently dynamic about it the way a say Good Night and Good Luck grips you. Think of it like a good meal at a restaurant you frequent. It’s solid, but it’s familiar. It feels like a film for an audience of a certain age, which is a bit of misstep given that it is based in a classic tale of espionage.
And for a man who’s story is largely unfamiliar to the world, you might be wishing there was just a little more than that.

Anthony Hopkins & Olivia Colman in THE FATHER and More From The Neon

We’re so thrilled to be seeing more and more familiar faces these days…and I’m delighted to say that our line-up keeps getting stronger. This Thursday, we’ll open one of my favorite films of 2020 – THE FATHER. Olivia Colman and Anthony Hopkins give outstanding performances (I didn’t know I could love them more). NOMADLAND (which is sweeping up “Best Picture” awards at numerous award ceremonies) and BOOGIE (from the author and producer of FRESH OFF THE BOAT) will stick around for another week, and MY SALINGER YEAR (which our audiences really loved) will get three more screenings this weekend. On Thursday, March 18, we’ll open THE COURIER – starring NEON-favorite Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel Brosnahan (of the MRS. MAISEL fame).

In our Virtual Cinema, we have 2 new films. STRAY follows three stray dogs through the streets and alleys of Istanbul. VARIETY calls it “Virtuosic,” IndieWire says it is “Profound,” and SCREEN INTERNATIONAL calls it “Beautiful.” And for all you Anglophiles, we have a very funny British comedy – DAYS OF THE BAGNOLD SUMMER.

We had another solid weekend at THE NEON. Thank you to everyone who has been coming out to support our great films. And speaking of great films…I’m sure you already know that NOMADLAND won “Best Motion Picture, Drama” at last weekend’s Golden Globes. I’m quite certain it will be a big contender at The Oscars, so we’re holding it for a third week…don’t miss it on the big screen. In addition to NOMADLAND, we’ll open two new films this weekend. BOOGIE is from Eddie Huang (producer of the hit TV show FRESH OFF THE BOAT) and MY SALINGER YEAR (starring Sigourney Weaver and Margaret Qualley) is based on Joanna Rakoff’s memoir.
THE FATHER, the new incredible film starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, will have a preview screening on Thursday, March 11 at 7:15 (regular ticket prices apply). It will officially open with multiple screenings per day on March 12.

NOMADLAND Opens & MINARI Holds at The Neon

We had a very good weekend at THE NEON. Audiences loved MINARI, and seeing the Spike Lee films on the big screen was a treat. MINARI is going to hold for a second week, but Thursday will be your last chance to catch two of the Spike Lee classics. On Thursday night (we just got permission to add a Thursday screening), we will open another Best Picture contender – NOMADLAND – starring the incredible and much-loved Frances McDormand (this will be the 11th film we’ve played with McDormand since I’ve been with THE NEON).

In our Virtual Cinema, we have 2 new films. RUTH: JUSTICE GINSBURG IN HER OWN WORDS is the new, powerful doc about Ruth Bader Ginsburg (not to be confused with RBG from a couple years ago), and Spike Lee was executive producer on SON OF THE SOUTH – a film that’s based on a true story about a young man turning away from his family’s roots in the KKK.

LITTLE FISH, A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX and Next “Director Spotlight!”

We have two new films opening this week. The first is LITTLE FISH – a film currently rated “100% Fresh” that indieWire calls “a creative, inventive romance for a broken time.” In addition, we’ve booked a few screenings of a film that just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last week – A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX.

Next week will be pretty special. In addition to MINARI (a film that will almost certainly be nominated for “Best Picture”), we will have another round of retrospective titles from from a brilliant filmmaker. This time, we’re going to take a look at 3 classics from the prolific Spike Lee – DO THE RIGHT THING (1989), MO’ BETTER BLUES (1990) and CROOKLYN (1994). More details soon!

We have two films with a lot of star power opening this Friday. SUPERNOVA stars two NEON heavyweights – Colin Firth (THE KING’S SPEECH and several others) and Stanley Tucci (SPOTLIGHT & MARGIN CALL). On our other screen, we’ll have MALCOLM & MARIE starring Zendaya (known for bigger Hollywood films like THE GREATEST SHOWMAN and SPIDERMAN: FAR FROM HOME) and John David Washington (known for his roles in BLACKKKLANSMAN and last summer’s TENET…though he did have a small role in the NEON hit OLD MAN AND THE GUN). We hope you’ll join us to see these new films on the big screen. Next Thursday, we’ll offer a preview screening of LITTLE FISH before it officially opens on Feb. 5. MLK/FBI and THE DIG at The Neon

We have two new films opening this week and a surprise for next Thursday. MLK/FBI is the powerful, award-winning documentary that premiered with The Toronto International Film Festival this year, and THE DIG is a lovely period film with NEON-favorites Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes – they both open this week. If you need to see HERSELF, Thursday will be your last chance. Due to the love and support for ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI and PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN, we found a way to hold both for one show per day over the weekend.On Thursday, Jan. 21, we will have a preview screening of OUR FRIEND – starring Jason Segel, Dakota Johnson, and Casey Affleck (which will officially open on Jan. 22).
In our Virtual Cinema, we will open ACASA, MY HOME and ROCK CAMP: THE MOVIE – two very different, well-crafted docs. We truly have something for everyone this weekend!

HERSELF, SLUMDOG & Year-End Update from The Neon

This week’s newsletter is coming a little early because I want to make sure you get reminded that AMELIE is only here through tonight. Tomorrow, we open a marvelous and empowering film – HERSELF. In addition to HERSELF, we’re adding a “NEON Classic” to the mix. Originally destined for “direct-to-video” in 2008, this gem ended up getting a theatrical release and went on to win 8 Oscars including “Best Picture.” Though it was dethroned as our highest grossing film in 2017, it still holds the record as our longest-running film of all time – the much-loved SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. It will start Friday for one week. Come back and see this heart-racing & triumphant film on the big screen. The new “landmark adaptation” of PINOCCHIO will stick around for another week.
We aren’t opening anything new in our Virtual Cinema this week…but there are plenty of great films to rent. In fact, if you count all the films in the Wong Kar Wai Retrospective, we currently have 18 films available. As a reminder, THE LIBRARY THAT DOLLY BUILT and ENDING DISEASE are only available through Dec. 31. MODERN PERSUASION, WBNC AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, and ZAPPA will all disappear on January 7.

Synopsis for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE: I saw this film at a press/industry screening at The Toronto International Film Festival in September 2008. Such an audience can usually be quite jaded and cynical…but this screening was different. The crowd erupted into applause and cheers at the end — we knew we had just seen something special. This record-breaker opened in early December 2008 at THE NEON and played for 16 weeks. It held the title of our “highest grossing film” for almost a decade, and we’ve seen Dev Patel back on our screens numerous times over the years. Come celebrate it’s return to the big screen this weekend! “As 18-year-old Jamal Malik (Patel) answers questions on the Indian version of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,’ flashbacks show how he got there. Synopsis for DEEP IN VOGUE: The Dayton LGBT Film Festival is helping us present DEEP IN VOGUE – complete with a virtual after-party and Q&A. “DEEP IN VOGUE celebrates the colorful, queer, emotional and political stories of Northern Vogue in Manchester, UK and the black, gay ballrooms of 1980s New York City. The documentary had its UK premiere at BFI Flare and its US premiere at NewFest NYC. 2020 has been quite a challenge, and I want to thank all of you for your continued support of THE NEON. Your donations and words of encouragement have meant the world to us. Though we’ll still have bumps in the road, new trends in the market to learn, and the need for fundraisers, THE NEON is here to stay. A few weeks ago, we got a sizable grant from The City of Dayton CARES Act – this grant helped to fill several holes in our 2020 budget, and it also allowed us to purchase 3 new Aerobiotix HEPA-Ultraviolet air recirculating units (the same devices used by The Cleveland Clinic). Each auditorium and the lobby now have one of these state-of-the art units which helps to make our space even safer. That said, I know some folks still aren’t ready to come out for in-person screenings…but I’m happy to share that we’ll be here when everyone is ready (and we have a lot of Virtual options in the interim).

We’ve got a great weekend in store at THE NEON. In addition to the new “definitive” edition of PINOCCHIO, we are bringing back an old friend. I am now in my 20th year of managing THE NEON, and AMELIE was our first big hit when I took over operations of the cinema. She was the film that made us breathe a little easier – knowing that we could handle crowds and that people knew we were here. We’re delighted to bring her back to the big screen this weekend! AMELIE will only be here for 5 days because a week from today, we will open a personal favorite from Sundance this year – HERSELF…and special thanks to our friends at Artemis Center who are helping us spread the word. Today is the last day for MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM (which we’ll be hearing a lot about this Oscar season) and George Clooney’s THE MIDNIGHT SKY – hurry down if you want to see them on the big screen.

We also have two new films in our Virtual Cinema. LOVE SARAH, a film I know so many of you will love, is a heartwarming British comedy starring Celia Imrie (from BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL). DEEP IN VOGUE, presented in part with The Dayton LGBT Film Festival, is an hour-long documentary that comes with Q&A’s and a Virtual After-Party!

DRIVEWAYS (a film so many of you loved this summer) has been noted as a favorite from many. In January, we’ve got several fantastic docs…the first two are big the Sundance winners – ACASA MY HOME (about a family who are forced to live in the big city after living in harmony with nature for 20 years) and THE REASON I JUMP (a cinematic exploration of the experiences of nonspeaking autistic people from around the world). On January 15, we’ll have a really fun doc called ROCK CAMP – a doc featuring some big rock’n’rollers. On January 22, art lovers will delight with MY REMBRANDT. THE BACK STORY: Cassandra “Cassie” Thomas (Carey Mulligan) leads a very interesting life. Working at a local coffee shop under her boss Gail (Laverne Cox), she still lives at home with her parents Susan and Stanley (Jennifer Coolidge and Clancy Brown) despite being on the cusp of her 30 birthday and seemingly has no friends. Well, she did have a friend in Nina, her medical school colleague who suffered a very unfortunate incident that contributed to her untimely demise.

Be that as it may, Cassie has found a new hobby: Going to night clubs and acting highly intoxicated, waiting for an unsuspecting male suitor like Jerry (Adam Brody) … or Paul (Sam Richardson) … or Neil (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) to pick her up to take her home. Then she teaches them a lesson they’ll never forget so that they don’t try and do something like that ever again.

So, when Ryan Cooper (Bo Burnham), another former medical school colleague, strolls into the coffee shop to ask her out, she is obviously reluctant to do so at first. But while Ryan continues his pursuit of her, Cassie learns of some news about another former college colleague, it sets in motion a series of events that will show hell hath no fury like a Promising Young Woman scorned …

THE REVIEW: The type of movie that women will rally behind and make more than one man reconsider apologizing for any and all past misdoings, Promising Young Woman has some moments that might feel a tad over-the-top … But the payoff of writer/director Emerald Fennell’s work is definitely worth the price of admission.

Mulligan’s diligence to making Cassie a character you understand the motivations is what drives Woman from start to finish, even at times when some characters could seemingly be forgiven for their actions. But, in the tradition of films like Who’s Next?, Peppermint and Gone Girl, Mulligan’s total commitment makes you forgive any of the films flaws and/or exaggerations necessary to make the film work. Credit should also go to Fennell – who was nominated for two Emmys during her time as the showrunner for Killing Eve – however, for making every one of her lead’s actions both understandable, relatable and much more sympathetic than the alternative. Cassie prefers to prevent instead of punish in most instances, keeping her character’s female machismo from reaching the cartoonish levels of that plagued the most recent Charlie’s Angels film from start to finish.

To say much more will ruin some of the surprises that lie ahead in the film; all you need to know is the film’s trailer gives you just enough information to let you know the promise of the film deserves your interest.

If nothing else, it’ll be a good conversation starter if you suspect you have a significant other with whom you wish to talk.
