Country’s Carter Family Royalty Plays Levitt

September 9, 2022 By Dayton937

Carlene Carter comes full circle with her latest CD, Carter Girl, on Rounder Records. As the daughter of country music legends June Carter Cash and Carl Smith, and granddaughter of “Mother” Maybelle Carter of the original historic Carter Family, Carlene said it was her lifelong goal to make this record. Producing her next album, Little Acts of Treason, in 1995, Carlene got her father Carl Smith out of retirement for a duet of his hit “Loose Talk.” Wherever she performs, Carlene knows that she is doing her part to honor those who came before her, in her own way. Nearly a century after their first recordings changed the course of American music, that circle remains unbroken by Carlene Carter.

Burnt Sugar Arkestra Play Levitt

September 8, 2022 By Dayton937

Founded by Village Voice icon Gregory Stephen ‘Ionman” Tate (1957-2021) and now led by Dayton Ohio monster groove bassist Jared Michael Nickerson, Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber is an NYC-territory band, a neo-tribal thang, a community hang, a society music guild aspiring to the condition of all that is molten, glacial, racial, spacial, oceanic, mythic, antiphonal and telepathic!

In 2022, BSAC continues to give tribute to their sonic Sensei, Maestro Lawrence Butch Morris (1947-2013) for showing them “THE WAY” of Conducted Improvisation allowing them to “never playing anything the same way once,” and to GT for creating the caramelized spaceship allowing BSAC access to a many-splendored and darkly energetic celestial realm of cosmic noise & riddim!

Hookahville Music Festival moves to Darke County over Labor Day weekend

September 1, 2022 By LIbby Ballengee

Hookahville, the Midwest’s longest-running music festival, will be held at J&M Ranch in Ansonia, Ohio, this Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2-4. It’s a “don’t miss” festival for fans of psychedelic rock’n’roll, and includes day passes to all weekend long camping options.

The 55th installment of the iconic festival features host band ekoostik hookah — scheduled to play two sets apiece on Saturday and Sunday, including a pair of reunion sets on Saturday with former member Ed McGee — along with reggae stalwarts Passafire, Cleveland favorites John Welton and the Awakening, a Dead/Allman Brothers set by hookah side project Trial by Fire featuring Joe Marcinek, and many more.

The festival has traditionally been held around the Columbus area, and is moving to Ansonia this year, which is close to Greenville.

“Bringing Hookahville to this beautiful ranch in Darke County will create an intimate and unique event that our fans have come to expect after nearly 30 years,” said festival director Jim Garibaldi. “Hookahville has been a part of the Ohio music scene since 1994 and we aim to keep the spirit alive this weekend in Ansonia.”

Other acts over the long weekend include Zoo Trippin’, Restless Leg String Band, Heavy Spirits, Chloe & The Steel Strings, Big Blitz, and Kadie Meadows.

Tickets start at just $80 and include free camping and parking. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit hookahville.com or email [email protected].

Rick Springfield, Men at Work, & John Waite At Mix 107.7 SummerFest

August 24, 2022 By Dayton937

In the early 1980s, Rick Springfield signed to RCA Records and was then cast as “Dr. Noah Drake” on the soap General Hospital. While he had released six albums in the 1970s, his 1980 break-through album Working Class Dog gave him the #1 single “Jessie’s Girl.” From his music and TV exposure, he became a teen idol. He continued to star on “GH” while touring and releasing Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet, with the hit “Don’t Talk To Strangers.” Upon releasing his 3rd album with RCA, Living In Oz, he quit “GH” and went back to his rock roots. Living In Oz is considered by many his finest (and hardest rock) album. He starred in the movie Hard to Hold in 1984 and released the soundtrack to it with the hit “Love Somebody,” followed by “Don’t Walk Away” and “Bop Til Ya Drop.” His next album, Tao, was followed up in 1988 by Rock Of Life.

Black Opry Review at Levitt

August 19, 2022 By Dayton937

Black Opry is a home for Black artists and Black fans of country, blues, folk, and Americana music. Country music has been made by and loved by Black people since its conception. For just as long, we have been overlooked and disregarded in the genre by fans and executives. Black Opry wants to change that and invite you to discover, support and enjoy the Black artists that make magic in this space. The Black Opry Revue showcases the diversity in sound and stories that Black artists offer to these genres.
