Musicians encouraged to apply to Dayton Porchfest

February 8, 2022 By LIbby Ballengee

Musicians are encouraged to apply to be part of this year’s Dayton Porchfest. The annual neighborhood musical event is held on porches throughout the historic and charming downtown St Anne’s Hill. This year’s event is planned for Saturday, August 20, 2022.

Organizers at The Collaboratory are asking area musicians of all styles to apply to perform. Dayton Porchfest is a multi-genre festival, open to all Dayton-area musicians and bands. Dayton PorchFest is free to attend, and a tips-only festival. Organizers supply the tip jars and aggressively promote tipping the performers. Bands are welcome to sell CDs and merchandise.

For 2022 Dayton Porchfest will be selecting 45-50 performers. The selection of artists will be based on curating five-musically diverse music blocks. Sets are 45-50 minutes and start at 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 PM. The application deadline is 11:59 PM, Monday, February 28, 2022. Link to application: https://daytonporchfest.wixsite.com/home/application

Dayton Porchfest was founded in 2017, inspired by the original Porchfest, which was started in 2007 in Ithaca, NY. Today there are over 150 Porchfests throughout the United States and Canada. Dayton was 94!

Dayton has a rich musical history and active music scene, which continues today. Dayton Porchfest is committed to reflecting that in its selection of musical artists, from funk and hip-hop to blues to indie rock, classical, and country, to bluegrass and old-timey music that has deep Appalachian traditions here. We also celebrate the ethnic diversity of the region, a reflection of our “Welcome Dayton” spirit that has contributed to a significant influx of immigrants and refugees over the past decade.

Dayton Porchfest is an initiative of The Collaboratory, a civic innovation lab that moves ideas to action. The Collaboratory provides infrastructure for people and organizations to collaboratively develop community initiatives that generate new economic, civic, and creative opportunities and value. The result is a healthier, more thriving region. All proceeds from Dayton Porchfest go to support the work of The Collaboratory.

SAVE THE DATE: DAYTON PORCHFEST SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, 2022.

The Australian Pink Floyd Show

Having sold over four million tickets in concerts that have taken place in 35 countries, The Australian Pink Floyd Show is rightfully hailed as one of the most in demand touring entities currently operating; The Times described them as “The Gold Standard”. This act is so good they were even engaged by David Gilmour to perform at his 50th birthday celebration!

The band has spent a long time getting to this level; the years have been invested in getting things right: the sound, the feel, the experience. While the Daily Telegraph rightly described them as being at “the top of the tribute band tree”, the journey has been a long one and began in 1988 in Adelaide, South Australia.

They eventually decided to relocate to the UK in pursuit of greater success. It was here they began to take off, and became the first Pink Floyd tribute band to tour the UK in 1993, starting off with the first International Pink Floyd Fan Convention at Wembley Convention Centre. They have been hailed by various sources as one of the best Pink Floyd cover bands and continue to tour the world.

Tickets on Sale Friday for Tori Amos at Taft Theatre

February 1, 2022 By Dayton937

A trailblazing musician, author and activist, Tori Amos has announced a massive North American 2022 tour today, which includes a stop at Taft Theatre in Cincinnati, Ohio on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.

Ocean to Ocean was released digitally and on CD in October and had been made available as a beautiful vinyl package last Friday, January 28. The record received widespread acclaim by fans and media alike, with features spanning Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly, Stereogum, SPIN and NPR. The record debuted at #2 on the Billboard Current Alternative Albums Chart and #6 on the Billboard Album Sales Chart, marking her tenth “Top 10”appearance.

Ocean to Ocean is Amos’ most personal work in years – an album bursting with warmth and connection, with deep roots in her earliest song writing. As communities around the world suffered the loss of life, live music, travel, and much at all to observe, Tori had a difficult time during the pandemic. She descended to an emotional state lower than she had been to for a long time – but the depths became creative, forcing a return to the kind of introspection she recognized from her debut album Little Earthquakes. The new collection is an expression of kinship and love, of emotional and geographical dislocation. It explores environmental concerns, the restraints of the pandemic for those on the cusp of adulthood, empowerment, loss & healing delivered with Tori’s trademark urgency and passion.

A pioneer across multiple platforms, Tori Amos’ second book RESISTANCE, a New York Times Bestseller, was released in 2020. Unrepentant Geraldines was her eighth studio album to debut in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 Chart. Her decidedly feminist stage musical The Light Princess debuted at #2 on the Broadway Billboard Chart. Nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, she was the first major label artist to offer a single for download, has had her songs turned into graphic novels and has produced ground-breaking videos throughout her career. In late 2016 she released the title song “Flicker” to the acclaimed Netflix documentary Audrie and Daisy, addressing issues of high school rape. A noted humanitarian, Tori was the first public voice for RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network), which is the United States’ largest anti-sexual assault organization and continues to be member of its National Leadership Council.

Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning at 10am on Friday, February 4 at Ticketmaster.com. Tickets can also be purchased without service fees at the Taft Theatre box office during regular box office hours.

Dayton Battle of the Bands series kicks off at The Brightside

January 20, 2022 By Dayton937

The Katawicks, the 2020 winners of Dayton Battle of the Bands

The 2nd annual Dayton Battle of the Bands series kicks off at The Brightside on Thursday, January 20, 2022. The six-week series seeks to highlight emerging, original musical talent in Dayton through a unique community collaboration between The Brightside, Sound Valley, Venus Child Productions, and Levitt Pavilion Dayton.

The series runs on Thursday evenings from 7-10pm at The Brightside (905 E 3rd St, Dayton) starting January 20th and running through February. Each Thursday evening features 4 bands performing 20 min sets. Each paying patron gets a ballot and one vote. There are also 3 local music industry judges voting too. Judges and audience votes are split 50/50 during the playoff rounds. The winner of each Thursday competition will move onto the finale, which is held on Saturday, February 26, 2022.

Dayton Battle of the Bands launched in January of 2020, ran 6 weeks, and concluded before the pandemic started. Organizers were unable to host the competition in 2021 due to the shutdown, so they are extra excited to be hosting this series once again.

One major thing that is different this time is that each finalist (6 total) will get an opening spot on Levitt Pavilion Dayton’s 2022 summer schedule! This is a major opportunity for all the bands. Each finalist will also receive a video of one song performed live during the finale from Sound Valley Dayton. The winner of the entire competition will earn studio time to record an EP, which was generously donated by Dayton Sound Studios.

“Despite ‘battle’ being in the name, this is actually a really friendly competition and a great way for bands to network with each other and get feedback from the judges,” Carli Dixon, owner of The Brightside, shared with us.

HOW TO GO?

Thursdays, January 20 through February 24, 2022

Located at The Brightside (905 E 3rd St, Dayton).

Doors open at 7pm / Show 7:30-10:30pm. Please be prompt to see all the bands!

$10 adv or day of show. Advance tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/246759372927

NOTE: The venue has installed UV-C filters to sanitize the circulated air. Masks are strongly recommended.

Dayton Native David Poe Release New Single

January 19, 2022 By Guest Contributor

David Poe returns with his stirring new single “People Clap Hands” (ECR Music Group). The first track from his highly-anticipated new album Everyone’s Got A Camera (September 23rd, 2022), “People Clap Hands” is vintage Poe, with all the melodic immediacy and lyrical depth one would expect from the celebrated songwriter, producer, and recording artist.

“Every songwriter worth their salt is striving for the kind of balanced poetry and simplicity that Poe seems to just pour out,” said No Depression of Poe’s most recent full-length effort God & The Girl. NMEdescribes Poe’s songs as “Storytelling with beautiful, lush, guitar-underpinned music.” The Village Voicedeclared him “The major domo of songwriters.”

Poe has toured the world with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Tori Amos, The Jayhawks, and Glenn Tilbrookof Squeeze. A composer fellow of the Sundance Institute, his work features in numerous film, TV, dance and theater projects, official selections of the Sundance Film Festival, and commercials for humanitarian projects like the Malala Fund and the You Mean The World Foundation.

Poe’s songs have been performed by a wide array of artists, including Curtis Stigers, Oh Land, Ana Moura, C.C. White, Thomas Dybdahl and the cast of ABC’s Nashville, and recorded by producers including T-Bone Burnett, Larry Klein, Buddy Miller, and Dave Sitek. He has also produced recordings for other artists, including Regina Spektor and Kraig Jarret Johnson.

Shadowland, a collaboration with contemporary dance company Pilobolus, toured for a decade and was performed on five continents, for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and was released as a feature film.

Transplanted from Dayton to New York City, David Poe served as the sound engineer at CBGB’s 313 Gallery before signing with Sony/Epic. He currently lives in Los Angeles.
