Shakespeare in South Park Presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream

September 16, 2009 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Midsummer Night's DreamFairies and Athenians are enjoying the late summer weather in South Park Green, a cozy hillside park with an impressive vista of the Dayton skyline at dusk. These Shakespearean characters are diligently rehearsing A Midsummer Night’s Dream, opening Friday, September 18 at 8PM. The play is sponsored by Historic South Park. Last year they staged Much Ado About Nothing.

The delightful romantic comedy of mismatched lovers, enchanted forests and Puck, the famously mischievous sprite, will play out against the natural background of lush trees strung with twinkling lights at sunset, a perfect stage for the magic-comic misadventures of the king and queen of the fairies, human lovers and bumbling rustic folk.

First-time play producers Phyllis Tonne and Galen Wilson cannot believe their good fortune in director, cast and crew. And of the 22 players, 11 are from their own neighborhood of South Park. Director Daniel Wilson, a resident of Riverside, is an experienced director and founder of Wichita’s Shakespeare in the Park program. His wife Jennifer Wilson, a military professional working at Wright Patterson Airforce Base, is also an actress and costume designer of long experience. Two alums of Dayton’s renowned Muse Machine, Michael Wadam and Natalie Houliston bring talent and leadership to the troupe, which is a healthy mix of accomplished and neophyte actors.

The University of Dayton contributed some of its alumni to the cast, including Paul Browning, now working at the Airforce Base and Alexandra Robinson of The Kettering Foundation. Chris Rowley, ex-military currently at Woolpert, takes the stage for the first time since seventh grade.

Shakespeare requires men and in the need to cast more of them, the producers walked through the neighborhood in search of good-looking fellows of a certain age, just like talent scouts of old. They found Nick Moye, who’s turning out to be something of a natural. The South Park neighborhood offered up another crucial talent, the all-important stage manager, in the form of Elizabeth Blackwell, a Wright State theatre graduate. Alex Pitcairn joined the cast having recently graduated from the University of Cincinnati theatre program.

Rounding out the stage with young people are Kaitlyn Paeg, 15, of Trotwood and Lydia Diabate-Tonne, a fifth grader at Valley Forge in Huber Heights. The director is highly pleased with his actors. Even after many years of professional directing and the founding of other theater companies, Daniel Wilson gently mocked himself saying, “I have a better cast than I deserve.”

The troupe is in high spirits and rising to the play’s challenge, which bodes well for a lively engaging performance. “Dream” includes a lot of physicality, fighting, chases and dances as well as delicate moments and broad humor, even a song or two. It promises to be great family fare. Audiences are asked to bring a blanket or lawn chairs. The Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances are free but donations will be accepted to defray the play’s production costs.

“There is a surprisingly strong affinity for the work of William Shakespeare that has drawn us together again this year, and has us looking forward to the next,” says Tonne. Indeed, the Bard of Avon seems to have found a home in South Park.

Check it out on the DMM Event Calendar!

Great American Dine Out

September 12, 2009 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

gado_logo_home6All of us have at one time or another experienced hunger. We’ve all craved a midnight snack, wanted something salty or needed some chocolate. But there’s a big difference between trying to satisfy a brief craving or stomach growl and wondering where your next meal will come from.

The reality is that more than 12.4 million children in America—that’s one in six—are at risk of hunger. And it’s likely that these children will endure lifelong consequences as a result of having limited access to nutritious foods.

Children who don’t get enough nutritious food are more likely to have:

  • Weaker immune systems
  • Impeded growth and development
  • More stomach- and headaches, colds and ear infections
  • Increased susceptibility to obesity
  • Impaired performance at school—academically, athletically and socially

During the week of Sept 20 -26, coffee shops to fine dining, restaurants across the nation will join together for the Great American Dine Out.  Participating restaurants give in a variety of ways— donate a percentage of sales, promote select menu items, collect money from suppliers and guests and much more. The funds raised from this campaign will support:

  • Increasing participation in school food and nutrition programs
  • Increasing the number of community gardens
  • Food banks and food pantries
  • Increasing access to fresh produce
  • Increasing utilization of federal child food and nutrition programs, e.g. food stamps, school breakfast, etc.
  • Advocacy around Child food and nutrition-related programs

First Watch, Captain D’s, Buffalo Wild Wings and Barbie’s Bistro are among the early eateries in the area signed up to participate. Click below to check for others:

This is Dayton celebrates Creatives

September 9, 2009 By Lisa Grigsby 20 Comments

THIS IS DAYTON small1One local grassroots group, “This is Dayton” is trying to change the perception of Dayton – for those that live and those that visit here.  One of the five DaytonCREATE initiatives, they plan to start by plastering downtown with large, vibrant posters of cool people that already do cool things in Dayton in time for Friday’s Urban Nights.  This first series of posters Celebrate Daytonians, with a focus on the “Creative Class & Urban Adventurers.”

For the past year or so, this group has been trying to determine the best way to show what makes Dayton so special.  What they realized is that it is the people and the connections formed within the community.  Then in August, there was a blog post on www.Esrati.com about a creative professional who had lost hope in Dayton and was relocating to Austin, Texas.   Carli Dixon and Theresa Gasper were sitting around Dixon’s dining room table in historic South Park one evening talking about the thread and decided to celebrate the ones who stay rather than mourn the ones who leave.

A week before, Gasper was enjoying the back patio at Café Boulevard with her husband, David, on a quiet Monday evening.  According to Gasper, a group of three young professionals told the waitress they were in town for two weeks and asked what there was to do when they weren’t working.  She rattled off various museums and they said they were looking for more nightlife and a little less culture.  She told them about all the places in the Oregon District and you could see the look on their eyes as they looked around and realized there were only five people on the patio, and realize they were silently asking “is every place this crowded?”   Says Gasper, “I can’t tell you what Dave and I talked about after that; I was so preoccupied with thinking about how to answer their question.”

It was then the vision of the posters came into focus – highlight cool people doing cool things in Dayton.  So you will see photos of people rock climbing at Urban Krag, boxing at Drake’s gym, kayaking on the river, mountain bike riding, playing bike polo, etc.   “These are activities many of the locals aren’t even aware of, so the posters will serve the dual purpose of informing locals and out-of-towners of activities they might not otherwise think of” said Gasper.  The people in the posters are real, not models.

Carli Dixon adds “Dayton is teeming with creativity, and provocative people and happenings, but we lack a “marketing department” that effectively tells the region and the nation about our successes. Further, our downtown already has infrastructure (galleries, bars, athletic venues), but we need more people filling those venues before we can convince new venues (restaurants, shops) to return to downtown.

“This is Dayton” is a grassroots effort to market the region.  The posters were designed by the committee along with Tommy Cooper, a graphic designer employed at Dixon’s company Freeze Frame It.   The vinyl for the first run was donated by Digital Fringe.  The Gasper’s are picking up the cost for the ink.  Others have stepped forward to assist with future print runs.   The posters also carry a modified version of the City of Dayton’s “Dayton Patented” logo that says “Proud to be a Dayton Original”.    No taxpayer dollars were used to support this effort.

Introducing The Buddha Den NTRO/XPO September Residency: Kuan

September 9, 2009 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

…as The Buddha Den NTRO/XPO celebrates one full year at Oregon Express as a FREE weekly event, we are very pleased to kick off our September Residency this evening with Kuan. The band are currently putting the finishing touches on their soon-to-be-released double EP, which they plan to showcase throughout the month, and you can get a taste of that below. Kuan also have a slew of East Coast tour dates lined up for October…

…Having served in numerous local outfits over the years, the collective members of Kuan are anything but green. Certainly their sound falls in the post-rock realm, with its guitar-driven instrumental nature, but it’s also easy to hear much influence from the jazz, psychedelic, and classic rock realms as well. Over the course of September, we’re planning to hear one of the best unsung bands in Dayton stretch out and show an impressive musical range. Hope you can join us….

Welcome The Buddha Den to DaytonMostMetro.com!

September 9, 2009 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

The Buddha DenI’m pleased to announce that we have our first official syndicated blog here on DMM, and we went big with this one!  Please welcome The Buddha Den – the BEST local music blog anywhere in the Dayton Region!  Kyle Melton is the man behind the blog, and as a lifelong Daytonian he knows the local music scene as well as anybody.  If you want to read more about him, just head over to the the articles about his two-year anniversary featured in this week’s Active Dayton and Dayton City Paper.

The Buddha Den covers the local music scene with a primary focus on indie rock.  In addition to very well written posts about local shows, bands and even national indie groups (that are usually playing a show in Dayton), The Buddha Den features many great mp3’s from Dayton’s best bands – with the stipulation that they are for sampling only, and he encourages folks to support the bands by buying their music and/or coming to shows.  So if you want to listen to a track or two before deciding to go check out a show then head over to the Buddha Den’s site and you’ll likely find it there.

So what is all this syndication all about?  It just means that you’ll be able to read Buddha Den posts here on DMM in their entirety shortly after they’re published.  If you’re a true local music junkie then you’ll likely just go straight to The Buddha Den’s site, but if you just want one site to get the overview then you can get it here.  Look for more syndications in the near future as we continue our quest to make DMM the most comprehensive online magazine in the region!

The festival features 12 jury selected short films that tackle a broad range of social issues with humor, humanity and honesty in 12 minutes or less. Topics range from gun violence and media censorship to urban development and climate change.

“By presenting this showcase DATV hopes to inspire Dayton area residents to use media to help make a difference in our community,” said Dan Suffoletto, Marketing Director.
