DMM Artist Spotlight – Carli Dixon

Last month we kicked off our DMM Artist Spotlight with Amy Kollar Anderson.  Today we’re happy to introduce a friend of DaytonMostMetro.com and our next artist spotlight – Carli Dixon!  Many of you know Carli’s husband Hamilton (or at least his work that can be seen in many local places).  But Carli is an amazing artist in her own right, not to mention a mother and savvy business woman with a strong love for her neighborhood (South Park) and her city – Dayton, Ohio.  We recently caught up with Carli to find out what makes her tick…

Carli Dixon – In Her Own Words

It was nearly 17 years ago that I sat at my desk as a freshman at the American University, searching for an inspiring business idea for my Small Business Development class. I wanted to care about the project, even though it was only a test-run in business plan writing. During the weekly phone date with my Mom, back in Ohio, I lamented my lack of enthusiasm for most of the ideas generated for the project so far. She had her own worries, strapped to her 8th year in what felt like a dead-end corporate job that was suffocating her. We talked about what life should be about, what passion should feel like, and what we could do to change our lackluster circumstances.

It was during that conversation that we decided to make a change. That small but powerful part of the psyche that is fueled by passion was speaking to us both, and we chose to listen. Within 3 months, we had discovered a small company that manufactures machinery used for preserving flowers. We researched the business, visited the machine manufacturer, and purchased our first machine in March of 1993. While my Mom spent that Spring experimenting with the machine, I enjoyed the exhilarating process of researching and writing the plan for a business idea I actually believed in.

In the 17 years since that ground breaking conversation, we have grown to become one of the nation’s premier floral preservation

companies. We have expanded our capacity with the purchase of 4 additional machines, and we now service all of Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and Indianapolis, as well as any clients nationwide who discover our company via FreezeFrameIt.com or word-of-mouth. We have 9 full-time employees, with specialities in graphic design, custom framing, floral design, customer sales and support, accounting and marketing. We have developed a patented floral shipping cooler called an E-Z ship kit, which we distribute to our clients through our over 100 partnering locations.

In 2008, we expanded our floral preservation options to include Bloombeads, our exclusive flower-petal jewelry line made for a client’s actual flowers. After months of product development, testing, and system building, we launched the product line in Spring of 2009. Since then, the line has grown to include Bracelets, Pendants & Necklaces, Earrings, Rosaries, Rings, Men’s accessories, and even Pandora-style charm beads. Each jewelry item is custom-made by hand, using the actual flower petals mounted in sterling silver findings.

It’s been a wild ride, a passionate process, a bonding mother-daughter experience, and in the 17 years, we’ve never looked back.

And now – here’s Carli’s answers to our 10 questions:

Where are you from originally and/or what brought you to Dayton?

I was born in Yellow Springs, Ohio; I’m the granddaughter of a Sicilian stone mason and nature lover, Carmelo Ricciardi, who spent 12 years working with Hugh Taylor Birch to build what is now the Glen Helen Nature Preserve . My grandfather actually formed the “yellow spring”, built the original swinging bridge, and hauled in the slabs of stone to make the 150+ steps at the Cory Street entrance to the Glen.

What is the most surprising thing about living in Dayton?

How at peace I feel here, as opposed to any other place I’ve lived in or visited. I attended college in D.C., and when my college friends ask what’s here that makes me want to stay, I say “Time…and breath.

Have you reinvented yourself in your life, and if so, how?

Oh yeah, 5 years ago I bumped into the love of my life, Hamilton Dixon, at the Oregon District coffee shop, and since then, I am a new and improved version of myself.  Our partnership has set the stage for me exploring the glories of motherhood and family life, has urged me to pursue my craziest ideas (i.e. AttaGirl Art & Gardens Complex), and pushed me to the limits of what I can accomplish as a business person and life partner.

If you weren’t in Dayton, where would you be?

Living on a farm/homestead in Kentucky, surrounded by wildflowers and vegetables, and farm animals…oh, and I’d have a big ‘ol tractor, and a powder blue pickup truck.

What do you think Dayton needs most?

When I think of what makes other urban settings seem alive and exciting, I picture PEOPLE…people sitting in cafes and restaurants and strolling the streets…Dayton has plenty of people in and around it, and it has enough (ideally, we would have more) attractions, cafes, galleries, restaurants, bars, etc….So what if Dayton focused on bridging that gap…daily transportation from U.D., Sinclair, Wright State, WPAFB, etc. to participating downtown locations that offer group  specials or incentives. Fill the current venues and businesses with people, which might make downtown a more interesting market for other businesses.  Point being; build momentum by creatively working with what you already have at your disposal, and funnel that momentum in a direction that encourages more people to engage in downtown.

What has been the most challenging part of starting your business?

Learning to become a human resource manager, while learning the art of delegating.  Both are crucial in a growing business; you can’t grow without the ability to delegate tasks effectively, and you need staff members to delegate to, so a growing business requires proficiency in both areas. Having never held another full-time position in any other company during my career, I was starting from ground zero in both arenas.

What’s the most dangerous thing you have ever done?

Lead climb a 5.10 rock climbing route in Mallorca Spain; It was the hardest lead route I have ever attempted.  I made it to the top, thanks to tenacity and a solid dose of terror.

Who inspires you?

My kids; I am so much more capable and motivated now that they are in my life.

Who helps you make your business succeed?

We are a team, and each team member truly does make a unique contribution.  Nanci, my mom and business partner, is the jeweler, as well as our accountant and systems analyst. Our sales and production team is made up of Angie Poland, Laura Clark, Mandi Osborne and Coral Bruss, and they each bring unique skills to our organization. Tommy Cooper (bassist for the Motel Beds) is our custom framer and graphic designer. Susan Riley, former custom framer for the Rutledge gallery, is our full-time floral designer. Brittney Williamson is our full-time fresh flower processor and mini-memento designer. Lastly, my step-dad John Hames (the current Executive Director of the American Wine Society) is our building engineer and expert at machine maintenance.

What is your favorite quote?

Fraze Hosts The Taste Thursday

Over 40 restaurants will be serving up samples of their specialties at Lincoln Park Commons starting at 5pm on Thurs, Sept 2nd to benefit the Kettering-Moraine-Oakwood Chamber of Commerce.  As a past attendee of this event I can tell you that the $20 advance ticket price ($25 day of event) is a bargain, but be prepared to stand in long lines.

Some highlights to look for will be the debut of Joya’s Bistro, the new Italian pizza & pasta place that will be opening this fall at The Greene, newer restaurants Butter Cafe and The Hawthorn Grill are first time participants worth checking out, The Oakwood Club usually serves up some spectacular salmon,  and be sure to save some room for samples from ele Cake Company- best known for finger licking good buttercream frosting!

Music Video Monday: August 30th edition

WYSO’s Summer Concert celebrates Rev Cool and local music

This Sunday, WYSO 91.3FM will be presenting a free summer concert at Carillon Park.  It’s going to be a night of music and dancing headlined by the Rev Cool Arkestra and Dance Ensemble.

If you aren’t a regular WYSO listener, you may be wondering about Rev Cool, whose name adorns a variety of bumper stickers around the Miami Valley. Jim Carter has been hosting Friday evening programming at WYSO for nearly 30 years under the name Rev Cool.  The show is called Around the Fringe and airs on WYSO every Friday night from 8pm until midnight.  It features music from “around the world and right here in your own backyard.”

Rev Cool’s local music connection predates his time on the WYSO airwaves.  In fact, by the time he started hosting Around the Fringe he was already president of his own record label, I WANNA.  The label was responsible for the very first Guided by Voices release and an Earth Island Orchestra release featuring Macarthur Genuis Grantee Regina Carter.

“He had already proven himself as a cutting-edge live music promoter. And he was already firmly established at the center of a Dayton’s vibrant local music scene,” says WYSO Music Director Niki Dakota.

In the past few years, Rev Cool has taken the great dance-able vibe from his radio show and turned into a live performance.  The Rev Cool Arkestra and Dance Ensemble features DJs accompanied by live musicians and dancers coordinated by Cityfolk’s Kelsa Rieger.

“Over the last two years, The Rev Cool Arkestra and Dance Ensemble have come to be nothing short of a live-music REV-o-lution.  It’s a sensation to the ears and the eyes, it lifts your spirits, and it leaves you powerless not to dance.  It just may be the perfect stage show.  Simply exhilarating,” says Dakota.

This perfect stage show will be rounded out by two other great local acts, C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks and Ruckus Roboticus.

C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks has been making a splash around the Miami Valley with their unique brand of instrumental, guitar-driven boogie.  Featuring a stellar lineup of local musicians, their set promises to get the audience ready to dance.  Arrive at 5pm sharp so you don’t miss a minute of their set.

After Parlour Tricks, Ruckus Roboticus will be spinning a DJ set that promises to lots of fun.  If you didn’t make it to his EP release show I told you about a few weeks ago, now is the time to see him in action.

This is a family friendly event and should be wrapped by 9pm so bring the kids.  Hopefully they’ll be so worn out from dancing that you’ll have no problem getting them to bed when you get home.

Party Planners Habitat Needs You!

Dayton Habitat is recruiting skilled volunteers to help plan and organize our 2011 Spring Gala “Dancing With Our Stars”.  A variety of committee members are needed to serve on the silent auction, public relations/media, decorations, and sponsorship committees. If you are interested in donating your time and talents, please contact Jen by email at [email protected] or by phone at 937.586.0860 ext. 16.

Habitat for Humanity serves as a hand up, not a handout, for families in need. Families apply to us to earn a house of their own. Once accepted into the program, our “Partner Families” work alongside our many volunteers to build their house. They put in 275 to 550 hours of “sweat equity” before earning their home, which is then sold to them on an affordable, interest-free mortgage. Partner families make a down payment toward the purchase of their home.

Mortgage payments from Partner Families are put back into the Fund for Humanity to build future homes. Other funding sources include revenue from our ReStore, corporate and church sponsorships, individual donations, government and foundation grants, and fundraising events.

Best Source of Startup Capital – Customers!

The single biggest problem for startup businesses is the lack of startup capital.  It is very challenging to start a business with few resources.  Many experts state that under-capitalization of a business is one of the large reasons for failure.

I started my business with $500.  How did I do that?  First, I prepared for the event.  I planned to draw no income for the first year, so I reduced my lifestyle, increased my savings and built a buffer to handle that early dry period.  Next, I focused on getting to cash positive as quickly as possible.  That meant lining up customers early.  Pre-selling is a technique that entrepreneurs don’t do often enough.  I kept every expenditure low.  I wanted to prove that the product was going to be successful, before ramping up investment.  How did I know if the product was a success?  The customers and marketplace told me.

Was it easy at first?  No.  It was brutal.  When the business began to grow, I took out bank loans and used my home as collateral.  The business was almost 10 years old, before I was able to able to remove the home pledge from the business loans.  I never spoke to a venture capitalist.  It took a lot of sacrifice to my lifestyle, but it paid off more than I could ever imagine.  My main engine for growth was customers.

The best part about customers is that their only interest is buying your products or services.  Customers don’t receive equity or interest on their purchase.  So, in terms of capital, selling products and services is the BEST way to raise capital.  Banks want lots of collateral; such as your home.  Venture Capitalists want very large returns, equity and control.  Customers don’t want your home or control of your business.  They simply want you to deliver what you promised to them at the agreed price.  Make a profit on the agreed price and use that profit to invest and grow your business.

A mentor told me one reason that my business was successful was because I did not spend time chasing capital.  I have seen businesses spend all of their time trying to woo investors.  The investors become the customer, instead of the customer being the customer.  The business owner thinks that capital investment solves all problems.  It does not.   Profitable sales solves problems better than anything else.

One final thought.  Keep your expenses under control.  You don’t need the fancy office or car when you start up.  You don’t need excess staff or over-engineered products.  Managing expenses is a challenge.  In start up phase, capital is so precious.  Protect it.

Art and Practicality Intersect at Oregon District

On any given day or night in the Oregon District, bikes can be found fighting for a spot along the patio fence of Blind Bob’s, located at 430 E. 5th street in Dayton’s Oregon District. Bar owners Bob and Lisa Mendenhall talked to their manager, Nate Mendenhall, about commissioning a local artist to create a beautiful and functional metal sculpture that will also serve as a much needed bicycle rack for the nightlife-oriented area of the Oregon District.  Nate selected local metal worker and artist TJ Schaff for the task, who has designed a stunning and practical bike rack that will be revealed on Friday, September 3rd as part of the District’s monthly art-centric “First Friday” events. “We bring entertainment with great music all the time,” says Bob. “We thought this would be a way to embrace the ‘arts’ aspect of the Oregon District while also providing a service that benefits the neighborhood.”

TJ has a fabrication shop called 212°N of Reality, where he creates artistic pieces from scrap metal.  His Facebook page is called Rust and Relaxation, and features several recent projects he has completed.

Kudos to both Blind Bob’s and TJ Schaff for starting what will hopefully be a trend in the Oregon District and throughout downtown – public art created by local artists AND more bike racks.  With local metal artists like TJ and others (our friend Hamilton Dixon comes to mind), we could very well have the coolest bike racks of any city in the Midwest!

Duvall, Murray & Spacek in GET LOW

Hello Everyone.

We’ve got a lot going on in the next several weeks…and there are many more events in the works. These special events are going to keep us on our toes, but I’m certain you’ll be interested in many of them.

As predicted last week, COCO CHANEL & IGOR STRAVINSKY could only stick around for one week. Today is the last day for the film…and tomorrow we start GET LOW – the new highly acclaimed film with Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, and Sissy Spacek. Please spread the word and tell people to support this indie gem at a true indie theatre – THE NEON.

Synopsis for GET LOW: “Inspired by the true story of Tennessee recluse Felix “Bush” Breazeale, who planned his funeral while he was still alive… Few folks have spoken with Felix Bush (Duvall) since he disappeared into the Tennessee woods 40 years ago, and the ones who have don’t necessarily have the kindest things to say about him. Gruff, confrontational, and ill-tempered, Felix has been the source of many malicious rumors over the years. Some say he’s a cold-hearted killer and his penchant for walking into town with a shotgun, a wild beard, and threadbare clothes doesn’t exactly give the impression of a man who seeks to make friends. When Felix walks into Frank Quinn’s (Murray) funeral parlor and announces his intentions to throw himself a massive party before he passes away, word quickly spreads through town and anticipation starts to run high. On Wednesday, September 15th at 7:30 p.m. MochaReaders will host a special screening of the 70’s hit movie FOXY BROWN starring legendary actress Pam Grier. Movie goers will enjoy refreshments, special giveaways and WWRD-TV32 will highlight the event. Join MochaReaders in celebrating and welcoming Pam Grier to Dayton to promote her new book. On Thursday, Sept. 16, DATV will present the MEDIA THAT MATTERS FILM FESTIVAL. The festival showcases 12 jury selected short films – each 12 minutes or less – that tackle a broad range of social issues with humor, humanity and honesty. Tickets are $15 each and are available on-line at www.datv.org or at our box office.

The Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival is swinging into action for its 5th year! The wonderfully designed website just launched a few days ago. Check it out at www.daytonlgbt.com. The website is full of images and links to trailers and official sites. It also outlines all of the sponsors for this year. Over the next couple weeks, we will be securing the visiting artists for this year’s festival – writers, directors, and stars. Stay tuned for more details.

Living City Film Fest is at it again! This year, the festival will be a celebration of the career of Jeff Bridges. Titles include THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and THE BIG LEBOWSKI (each on 35mm)…a full line-up of titles, sponsors and dates (October/November) will be announced soon.

The Adventures of Nikki Nett

Meet my friend Nikki Nett. She’s sassy, she’s single and she’s a shopaholic. She can hold her own whether we’re drinking cosmos or tequila, and she can do it all in 4 inch heels!  She’s always up on the latest gossip, the hottest night spot and  the newest boutique in town.   And now she’s telling you about it, too!

There are a couple philosophies that I live by.
1.) There is no situation in life where lipgloss is inappropriate.
2.) Rockin’ shoes really CAN make your life better (just ask Cinderella).

This week, we are going to delve into the wonderful world of shoes. Not just any old ordinary shoes, no ma’am (or sir)! We are going to talk about the sexy stilettos. The kind that you put on and instantly become more glamorous, more confident, maybe even a little naughty. The kind that make you look like you have legs for miles, that give your booty that extra lift, and that make you walk a bit taller (literally AND figuratively). These shoes are my weakness. Some people dream of vacations, winning the lottery, an amazing house- I dream of Carrie Bradshaw’s closet. Although I don’t live in Manhattan with my Mr. Big, I’m working on the shoe collection, slowly but surely.

I have found a little slice of heaven here in the Miami Valley, a glimpse into the closet of my heart, if you will. Integritas in the Dayton Mall! Perhaps you have seen or heard the commercials with their slogan “Life’s too short for boring shoes!“, well those words are what owners Manish & Stacy Agarwal believe wholeheartedly and they want to make sure YOUR life is never boring! (Ok, they can’t go to the grocery store for you, or help you find a date for Saturday night, I’m pretty sure they don’t want to do your laundry for you, but they can at least provide you with the extra 4 inches in a hot color to make all of the above seem more bearable)

Recently, I had the chance to speak with Manish about Integitas. He just returned from a buying trip and I have to say, I know I’m excited about what’s in store for this season!

What made you decide to open a shoe store here in the Dayton area?
We opened the store in 2004 because we saw the need for good, fashionable shoes in the Dayton market.

What’s your favorite aspect of owning a shoe store here?
Being able to bring a little of the big city looks here to this smaller town. (THANK YOU!!)

What is the best fashion advice you’ve ever been given?
LIFE’S TOO SHORT FOR BORING SHOES!! (I concur, I really, reeeaaallly do!)

Integritas is located right next to Victoria’s Secret in the Dayton Mall. In addition to carrying so many of the current styles by Guess, Jessica Simpson, BCBgeneration and Coach for women, they also carry men’s styles. Admittedly, the men’s section only got a glance from me seeing as how I was mesmerized by a silvery, sparkly, fabulous shoe from Guess. Oh, then there was the sexy suede one to the right of it with the same style in fuchsia as well. Oops…getting sidetracked, ok, back to the men. Cole Haan, Robert Wayne, Mezlan, Steve Madden for Men are just a few of the brands you will find at Integritas. Soon they will also begin carrying a denim line as well as some fashion forward shirts for men.

Integritas is not ‘just’ a shoe store. You can top off your look with a pair of designer shades from D&G, Versace, Burberry, and Prada (ok, I don’t mind if I do!) or grab one of this season’s ‘IT’ bags. I couldn’t decide which one I couldn’t live without, Looks like another trip is in order (I’ll make up any excuse). There are shoes there that need a good home, MY home. The leopard print peep toe with the red bow needs to be worn with my favorite LBD. The red suede ones with the spikes should make friends with my skinny jeans & black t-shirt. Thigh high boots?? MUST HAVE.

Where’s the Art in Yellow Springs?

Sometimes visitors to Yellow Springs ask, “Where’s the Art?  I heard this was an art town but there aren’t rows of galleries like other art towns I’ve visited.”

Here’s my answer “the whole town is a gallery.”  Art is everywhere in Yellow Springs, you sit on it – the mosaic benches and the painted daisy benches.  You lean against it- the knit and felt covered benches.  You can touch it on the poles in the knit graffiti.

Visit the public restrooms in the Train Station and look up.  It’s a Loo with a view! Local artists started the Chamber Pot Gallery 4 years ago.

Walk behind Xenia Ave. in Keith’s Alley and see the ever-changing murals. You might catch an artist painting one.

You drive past murals and sculptures on Xenia Ave. and Dayton St. coming into town.

We sneak art in everywhere.  Going for a walk in the glen?  Stop in for a map in the Glen Helen Building and bingo! someone has hung a new art show in the atrium.

Hungry? Get a bite to eat at the Winds Café or the Sunrise Café and you are surrounded with a beautiful art show that changes every month.

Going to listen to the live band at the Wine Tasting at The Emporium?  Whose show is on the walls tonight?   Love the   Pizza at Ha Ha’s?  Check out this month’s featured artist.   On Corry St., Williams Eatery has a couple of regular artists who keep their walls filled with color and wonderful scenes of the Glen.

If you go to see an art film at The Little Art Theater there’s a visual art show hung in the lobby. That’s a double art whammy.

This past month, at the Corner Cone, you could get a scoop of ice cream and depending on the day listen to live music, watch the 10 Minute Play Festival or explore the Art Phone Booth.

Then there are the galleries- Herndon Gallery on the Antioch Campus, Would you, Could you In A Frame on Corry St., the Yellow Springs Arts Council Gallery on Xenia Ave and the new kid on the block- Art Happens in Kings Yard.   Plus there are 2 long established artist co-ops, Yellow Springs Pottery and the Village Artisans.   Or go see the John Bryan Community Pottery with its magnificent ceramic mural on one side and it’s painted penguins on the other side of the door.  It is right behind the John Bryan Building at 100 Dayton St..  Inside ceramic artists are working at the wheels and firing the kilns day and night.

Many Fridays, you can find free art pieces left around town by the Jafagirls.

O.K. there’s much  more but I think I will end with a challenge mystery.  Can you find these art pieces?  They are outside, in plain view, in downtown Yellow Springs.

Jane’s Best Bets (8/25 – 8/29)

Time and time again, I have heard people say, “There is nothing to do in Dayton.”  Usually it is pretty difficult to ruffle my feathers (probably because I don’t have any), but this phrase really gets my goat!  As a Dayton native and huge advocate of the city, I know there are TONS of things to do in Dayton…and my goal here is to prove it to you!

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Jane Krebs.  For those of you who do know me, my name is still Jane Krebs.  Each Wednesday, I will be bringing you Jane’s Best Bets – a weekly column devoted to informing you of some of the best events going on in and around our wonderful city.  To give you a little history, Jane’s Best Bets actually began a little over a year ago when I started emailing a group of friends and family about fun events going on around town.  The concept grew and grew and today, that email reaches more than one-hundred people.  And now, I feel so fortunate to bring it to all of you – the wonderful readers of DaytonMostMetro.com!

I am a person of many interests and am involved in many wonderful organizations in our community, such as the Red Cross Associate Board and Generation Dayton.  So whether you’re a sports fanatic, a food guru, art enthusiast, community service advocate, or a music junkie, you have definitely come to the right place.  Dayton has something to offer you…and it is my job to show you!

Also, for those of you who have not seen a “Jane’s Best Bets”, in addition to featuring fun events, it also features the signature “Dumb Joke of the Week”.  Perhaps not my readers’ favorite part, as those who know me would describe me as VERY corny (think the “Laffy Taffy” type).  So, if you are corny, I think we’re going to get along just fine.  And if not, that’s okay too – just feel free to shake your head because after all, I’ll never know!

So, without further adieu, here are your best bets!  It’s Dayton’s very first Beer Week, so if you like beer, then this is definitely your week.  If you don’t, however, there are plenty of other fun things for you to do!

Starting on Wednesday, check out one of the many beer tastings going on as a part of Dayton Beer Week, such as the Abita Beer Tasting Event at Rue Dumaine, the Brooklyn Brewery Tasting at Bruning’s Wine Cellar, the Beer and Wine Throwdown at the Culinary Company, the Stone Beer Dinner at Thai 9, the Dogfish Head Beer Dinner at Dorothy Lane Market, the Brooklyn Brewery Oktoberfest Release at Fox & Hound, or the Stone 090909 Vertical Epic Tapping at Chappys.  That sure was a mouthful!  Speaking of mouths, perhaps you like to use yours to sing.  If so, you’ll want to head to the 88 Club for ‘Wild Out’ Karaoke Wednesday.  Or, if you’re a bookworm who likes a good bargain (don’t we all!), check out the Wright Library Book Sale, which runs through Sunday.

Then on Thursday, continue to celebrate Dayton Beer Week by sampling more beer at another tasting, such as the Troegs Beer Tasting at the Dorothy Lane Market in Oakwood, the Mt. Carmel Beer Tasting at a Taste of Wine, or the Goose Island Beer and Cheese Tasting at Spinoza’s.  If you’d rather check out opportunities to be out and about in the great outdoors as opposed to chilling and sipping a brewski, you may want to check out Five Rivers MetroParks’ Intro to Backpacking Class.  Or, check out the Kim Kelly Orchestra as part of Big Band Nights at the new Pavillion at Riverscape!

On Friday, support local farmers by going to the Xenia Farmer’s Market.  If you’d like to meet other young professionals in the area, check out Generation Dayton’s 4th Friday Lunch, followed by Generation Dayton’s 2010 WPAFB Tour (open to Generation Dayton Members).  I know several people who attended this event last year and said it was great!  Later in the evening, check out some live outdoor music – one of my favorite things!  Some options are the Websters at Sharkey’s (very fun cover band!) or Funky G at The Greene (FREE)!  And, if you enjoy festivals, check out the Lebanese Festival to sample authentic Middle-Eastern food and pastries, watch some belly dancing, and enjoy all the other things festivals have to offer including amusement rides and poker (I guess this column is about “bet”ting after all!).  Or, if you feel like going to another beer tasting, check out Red Carpet Night at the Trolley Stop, where there will be many different beers to try!

I’m hoping you can save up some energy during the week because Saturday is the big day – the 12th Annual AleFest Dayton at Carillon Park!  If you like beer at all, then this is one event you won’t want to miss, as you can choose from over 300 beers to sample!  At Riverscape, check out the African American Cultural Festival.  Or, if you didn’t get to check out the Lebanese Festival Friday, now is your chance.  If you’re a Jimmy Buffett Fan, check out the 3rd Annual Concert, Fish Fry & Benefit with the Parrots of the Caribbean.  Just be sure you don’t put Margaritaville in your Garmin – you may get lost.  And, if you love the 80s, go to Mix 107.7’s Summerfest at the Fraze to see Blondie and Cheap Trick!  “One way or another,” I’m sure you’re going to make it a great Saturday!

And finally on Sunday, if you’re not too exhausted – head back to Carillon Park for WYSO’s FREE Summer Concert featuring the Rev Cool Arkestra and Dance Ensemble & C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks, or go to Stubbs Park in Centerville to see Lone Raven.  Or if you feel like just kicking back and reading a book, I know where you can get one at a bargain!  Head on over to the last day for the Wright Library Book Sale where a bag of books is just $2.00!

And now it’s time for the Dumb Joke of the Week.  Drum roll please…

HYPE in the Northern Miami Valley

HYPE stands for Helping Young Professionals Emerge and is the centralized way for YPs in the Northern Miami Valley to meet new people, have fun with creative social events, and volunteer together to make a difference in the community.  I spoke to HYPE chair, Doug Eakin to get the scoop on this “new” YP group.  Doug grew up in Columbus, but spent most of the last 10 years in Indiana.  A job opportunity as a Business Banking Representative for Unity National Bank brought him to the Miami Valley.

There was no HYPE for a long time.  Doug was contacted by the Executive Director of the Piqua Chamber of Commerce and invited to get involved with this new initiative.  In January 2009, the EDs from Covington, Tipp City, Piqua and Troy invited a group of young people together to come up with a way to represent YP interests in the Northern Miami Valley.  Eakin dove as the chair of this new organization in and started planning.   In May 2009, the group launched with their official kick-off and have been going since then.  According to Eakin, “HYPE is a group developed for and by young professionals who are dedicated to Social Opportunity, Professional Development, and Community Involvement, and have a shared interest in promoting the Northern Miami Valley as a place to live, work and play.”  And they have grown substantially since the beginning – social events (like monthly happy hours and a successful canoeing collaboration with Gen D), volunteer opportunities, and really creative networking events (like their wine education series) have helped them gain momentum.

But although they are growing quickly and getting more people involved, one of their greatest opportunities is in the newness of the organization.  According to Eakin, “Given that we’re still such a young organization, people still have the opportunity to get on at the ground floor and really have an active role in shaping the organization.”   And it’s in the leadership opportunities that Eakin has found some of the greatest rewards.  He says being in a leadership position give him “the chance to make a difference.  It lets me see how my ideas and thoughts play out to the members of the organization… it’s very rewarding.”  And beyond Eakin’s leadership role, just being a part of the organization has “absolutely” helped him professionally.  He’s a big believer in the tried-and-true argument that “success in the business world relates directly to the people that you know.”

Similar to the downtown Dayton region, the Northern Miami Valley struggles with some negative stigma about what’s available for people.  Eakin is adamant about where it comes from; he says, “I don’t think for a second that this negative stigma comes as a result of lack of opportunities.  Some of the bad feedback we’ve gotten about our organization has come from people that show up at an event and take no personal responsibility for involving themselves in what’s going on.  Getting involved is an attitude – you have to make the decision to do it, it’s not going to happen if you’re not open to the possibility.”

Final words regarding his mission with HYPE and involvement?  Eakin shares that “The world doesn’t stop at I-70; there’s plenty of things to do and places to see up north.”  HYPE doesn’t cost a penny to ‘join.’  So, for any YPs who are interested in learning more about what’s going on – check it out!  If you want to know more, visit www.hypenmv.org.

JumpstART Announces Upcoming Events

As the 2010-2011 arts season starts to get underway, JumpstART – the YP activity arm of Culture Works – announced some new deals and upcoming events.  This is a group dedicated to providing great arts opportunities to plug local young professionals into the arts scene.  From their email:

    • Music Video Monday: August 23rd edition

    Whew!  It’s been a busy Monday so far…so busy, in fact, that I’m just now getting around to delivering this week’s music video.  Last week, I received some exciting news from the ladies of Jasper the Colossal.  This Wednesday night, they’ll playing at Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati opening for Stone Temple Pilots and Cage the Elephant.  It’s a great achievement for a great hometown band, and our congratulations goes out to them.

    So if you hadn’t already guessed, this week’s video featuring a live performance from Jasper the Colossal.  This particular video comes from a Cure tribute show at the now defunct Dayton Dirt Collective.  Enjoy!

    12th Annual Dayton AleFest – Win Tickets!

    Dayton’s first annual Beer Week kicked off this past weekend with a “beer pride parade” down Fifth Street in the Oregon District, and it continues all week with several beer tastings, tappings and events happening at several venues across the Dayton Region.  The finale is of course the 12th Annual Dayton AleFest at Carrillon Park – one of the most popular festivals all year in Dayton (and if you’ve been to our many other festivals here you know that is saying a lot!).  Founder Joe Waizmann has been organizing these beer festivals in cities across the Midwest for many years including Columbus, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Chicago.  The festival’s homebase continues to be Dayton, with two additional annual festivals added here – Winter AleFeast (3/5/2011 – which pairs delicious craft beer with gourmet food) and Cask AleFest (4/30/2011).

    The first Dayton AleFest was a small affair in Kettering, with 30 breweries, 60 beers and about 175 attendees.  This year, it is by far the largest beer event in Dayton with 100 breweries, 300 different beers and an expected crowd of over 4,500.  We have a ways to go before reaching the numbers of the Great American Beer Festival in Denver with over 2,200 beers and 49,000 attendees, but Daytonians do like their beer so anything is possible.
