Free Ticket Contest & THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT @ THE NEON!!

August 2, 2010 By Jonathan McNeal 4 Comments

Hello Everyone.

The booking fairy has granted us a wish!  THE NEON currently has Dayton’s exclusive booking of THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT…and that’s great for you, because THE NEON has Dayton’s best first-run ticket prices (not to mention a great selection of microbrews and imported beers).  We hope you’ll make plans to come out and support this film that is winning audiences & critics over across the country.

Synopsis for THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT: “The Kids Are All Right is the heartfelt new comedy from acclaimed director Lisa Cholodenko, starring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo. Two teenaged children (Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska and Journey to the Center of the Earth’s Josh Hutcherson) get the notion to seek out their biological father and introduce him into the family life that their two mothers (Bening and Moore) have built for them. Once the donor (Ruffalo) is found, the household will never be the same, as family ties are defined, re-defined, and re-re-defined. The New York Times raves that it’s ‘a generous, nearly note-perfect portrait of a modern family,’ and Entertainment Weekly calls the movie ‘funny, smart and sexy!’” (taken from movieweb.com)  Click on the image below to be directed to the official site.

We had to move WINTER’S BONE back a week, so we’re going to hold CYRUS for another week and hold onto MICMACS for one screening a day for one more week.  Both of these films will leave next Thursday to make room for WINTER’S BONE on August 6th.  Hurry down if you still need to see either of these films.

The Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival is swinging into action for its 5th year!  Mark your calendars for September 24-26.  The opening night film will be I KILLED MY MOTHER(an absolutely incredible film that has won awards and garnered high praise from numerous film festivals…from Cannes to Toronto to Frameline) – and you absolutely can’t miss it on the big screen.  In next week’s update, I’ll announce the entire line-up.  If you know someone who would like to sponsor the festival (either through a business or personally), please get in touch with me right away.

And Now – FREE TICKET Information. We want you to review our films!  Come to THE NEON and see our current films…then post your review on DaytonMostMetro.com under THE NEON’s weekly update.  At the end of August, we’ll collect all the names of people who have reviewed films – and we’ll draw 2 winners for a free pass (good for 2 admissions).  Each film review counts as an entry (though you can only review a film one time).  Please join in and help create some energy for THE NEON.  (If this goes over well, we’ll do it next month, too.)

We hope to see you in the coming week.
Take care,
Jonathan

Meet Generation Dayton’s Spotlight Member of the Month

August 2, 2010 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

A program of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, Generation Dayton encourages talented young professionals who live and work in the Dayton region to meet, network, learn, grow and establish themselves as integral components in the future success of the region. Each month we’ll introduce you to one of their members with a spotlight interview. So meet our next young professional:

Name: Aaron Flatter

Title: Technical Sales Specialist

Organization: Agil IT
Community Involvement: Generation Dayton employee relations committee  &  HYPE of Miami County.
Hobbies and Interests: Golf, woodworking, flying and nuclear power.
Favorite Area Eatery: The Wine Gallery and Café.
Favorite Weekend Activity: Spending time with my wife, golfing and enjoying almost anything that includes the outdoors.
What do you love about Dayton?
Dayton is home for me. Well, technically I live in the middle of corn and bean fields, but its close enough. I’ve been around Dayton my entire life and just when I think there’s something missing, well, that’s when my wife usually clues me in. Dayton may be a rather small city but it’s not lacking charm, culture or diversity. There are so many wonderful organizations and local business that help make Dayton the city that it is. Of course I can’t keep my mind from wandering to all the other good things Dayton offers such as Boston Stokers coffee, the seemingly never ending beer menu at Chappys, and too many local places to even mention when it comes to delicious food. I love Dayton not just because it’s home to me and most of my family but because its home to so many other wonderful people as well. I can’t quite imagine my life without Dayton, or without Pub Fries from the Dublin Pub.
How has Generation Dayton aided your professional, personal and/or social development?
Generation Dayton has given me the opportunities to interact with fellow young professionals that share similar morals, goals and interest.
Tell us a little more about your profession and company…
Agil IT designs, builds, maintains and secures information and infrastructures for ambulatory care healthcare practices. Our mission is to help these organizations leverage their investments in technology to establish themselves as leaders in their industry. Agil IT sees and understands the evolution of healthcare, especially as the federal government is pushing hard for Electronic Health Records (EHR) adoption and with potential cuts to reimbursements coming down the pike for medical practices, operational efficiency is paramount. We help those practices with those efficiencies, which in turn help them to provide the best patient care…all through technology and consulting.
What do you enjoy about your career/profession? Employer?
The challenges that arrive with every new technology breakthrough and having the opportunity to do this in a passionate and energetic work environment.

Abita Brewery launches S.O.S. pilsner to aid Gulf Coast

August 2, 2010 By Lisa Grigsby 1 Comment

One of the Gulf Coast’s most famous breweries has crafted a new beer and promised to send a portion of the money earned on each bottle to oil spill relief efforts.  A bottle of Abita S.O.S. Pilsner will cost about $8, and 75 cents of each sale will go to a fund that will be used to support oil spill-related causes of the company’s choosing, she said.  According to Beth Harris, a public relations representative for Abita, the company used the 22-ounce bottles because it’s the quickest way to get the lager to market.

A 22-ounce bottle, sold as a single, requires getting only one label approved by the federal government, whereas a 12-ounce bottle requires approval for labels on the front, back and six-pack container.  The 22-ounce SOS brew has hand drawn images of what makes the Gulf of Mexico so unique. Illustrations like those of pelicans, fish, shrimp and fishing boats are arranged in the pattern of the timeless distress symbol: S-O-S. Marsh grass and a symbolic pair of white “shrimp boots” also are highlighted in the beautiful design.  The beer is an unfiltered  Weizen Pils made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and  dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold  color, sweet malt flavor and pleasant bitterness and aroma. The brew is  7 percent ABV.

The SOS – A Charitable Fund will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive the oil spill.  Related retail merchandise (hat, T-shirt, lapel pin, decal and car magnet) will be sold and 100 percent of net proceeds will benefit the SOS Fund. Abita Beer is the oldest and largest craft brewer in the southeast and the 17th largest craft brewer in the nation. Online donations can also be made directly to the fund.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Abita Beer launched Restoration Pale Ale and a related line of merchandise raising over half a million dollars for hurricane relief.

Post Your Own S.O.S.
An innovative new website has been created to support the charitable efforts. At SOS.abita.com consumers can discover additional ways to help, “post an SOS” within an interactive on-line coastal scene that doubles as a social sounding board. Consumers choose a shrimp boat, crab, fish or pelican to represent their post and write a short message of hope, inspiration or frustration. The message can also be shared with social media accounts to tell the world about what is happening along the Gulf Coast.

Locally you can enjoy your Abita S.O.S at Rue Dumaine, which has the beer exclusively until at least mid-month.   Additionally,  if you dine there on any Wednesday in August to satisfy your southern cravings, the RUE will donate $1 per person to the same charity.
