Entropy & Reclamation: The Art of Tom Watson III

June 14, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Local artist Tom Watson III will  be the featured artist on display at Emporium Wines and the Underdog Cafe in downtown Yellow Springs. Please join him for the opening reception on Saturday, June 16th from 5 to 7 pm.

Tom Watson III was awarded the first annual RAISE Award from the National Stroke Association in October 2011.  The RAISE awards highlight individuals and groups who have impacted the lives of others through stroke advocacy and education.  Watson received the Outstanding Individual Award in recognition of his efforts to advocate for stroke awareness and prevention through his artwork (Watson had a severe brain stem stroke in 2005, from which his awarded artwork series is derived). The awards ceremony was held at the Denver Natural History museum in Denver, Colorado, and Watson was honored with the award by Henry “The Fonz” Winkler ofHappy Days fame.

The RAISE Award follows several exhibits showcasing Watson’s work over the last few years, including part of
his mixed media/screen print series, “Stem/ReAssemblage.”  In 2005, Watson suffered a massive brain stem stroke.  It was his passion for art that saved him. “While relearning how to write and regaining my fine motor skills, my artwork became a cathartic outlet to help me deal with the emotional turmoil and depression resultant from such a traumatic and life-changing experience.”

Watson’s recent work reflects outwardly the internal transformation that occurred during his physical recovery. While his mind learned to reconnect broken synapses, Watson deconstructed and then reassembled materials salvaged from earlier silkscreen projects to create a new body of art with a cohesive design. “I have used this as a chance to refocus and revive myself after battling discouragement, suppression, and other psychological hindrances both during my recovery and afterward.”

Watson will be participating in the second annual Cyclops Fest, also in Yellow Springs, a handmade arts and crafts fair taking place on Saturday, September 15th at the Yellow Springs Community Center.

Watson is also currently featured in the gift shop of We Care Arts in Kettering, OH (just south of Dorothy Lane/Wilmington Pike intersection), and should be in place for the next few months, along with other hand-crafted items. http://www.facebook.com/pages/We-Care-Arts/160621882682

In addition to his fine art, Watson also creates hand-printed, silk-screened T-shirts, showcasing the Stem image inspired by his stroke experience and recovery.  These shirts are available from the artist, as well as Urban Handmade in downtown Yellow Springs, Clash Consignment in downtown Dayton, and Decoy Art Boutique& Studio  in Beavercreek, OH.  Watson will also be expanding to other locations in the future.

Opposites Attract in Oz

June 14, 2012 By Russell Florence, Jr. 1 Comment

Composer Stephen Schwartz and librettist Winnie Holzman’s 2003 blockbuster “Wicked,” a clever, intriguing and tuneful reimagining of “The Wizard of Oz” lore adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel of the same name, returns to Dayton with outstanding flourish courtesy of the Victoria Theatre Association’s Premier Health Partners Broadway Series.
Set prior to Dorothy Gale’s arrival in Oz and previously seen in 2010 with equally eye-popping finesse under Joe Mantello’s crisp, polished direction, “Wicked” flies into the Schuster Center led by the terrific duo of Christine Dwyer and Tiffany Haas as the misunderstood, green-toned Elphaba and adorably superficial Glinda (originally Galinda), respectively. Portraying polar opposites who meet at Shiz University and form an unexpected yet endearing bond that defies the odds, these actresses skillfully convey the emotional depth and delicious wit inherent in their vocally challenging roles.

The absolutely dynamic, fully engrossing Dwyer, supplying one of the best performances of the season, splendidly embraces Elphaba’s outcast status, distaste for Ozian hypocrisy and nurturing spirit in respect to guardianship of her wheelchair-bound sister Nessarose (a formidable Catherine Charlebois). Musically, and with a sublime pop sensibility, she belts Schwartz’s songs with a beguiling force on par with Tony winner Idina Menzel who originated the role. Dwyer’s strikingly lyric-driven “The Wizard and I” deserves an encore along with her phenomenally defiant, liberating “Defying Gravity,” awash in lighting designer Kenneth Posner’s dazzling purple, white and green hues. The bubbly Haas, a lovely soprano whose range is attractively showcased in “No One Mourns the Wicked” and “Thank Goodness,” particularly masters Glinda’s tricky balancing act of being self-obsessed without seeming annoyingly uncouth. When a touching love triangle develops as the handsome Fiyero (fine tenor Billy Harrigan Tighe) puts a kink into Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship, Haas’ vulnerability and maturity winningly arises. Together, Dwyer and Haas offer a very humorous rendition of “What Is This Feeling?” and a beautifully poignant “For Good.”

Elsewhere, Marilyn Caskey exudes prim sophistication and dastardly menace as Shiz headmistress Madame Morrible, Timothy Britten Parker excellently reiterates the dark underbelly of Oz as Dr. Dillamond, Dan Pacheco is a likably smitten Boq, a Munchkin who pines for Glinda to Nessarose’s dismay, and Paul Kreppel is an amiably aloof as the infamous Wizard, who convinces the citizens of Oz that it’s dangerous for animals to talk and be considered as equals. Eugene Lee’s fabulous, Tony winning scenic design, Susan Hilferty’s superb, Tony winning costumes abounding with personality and music director Adam Souza’s solid orchestra are additional treats.
Although the more iconic elements of the Oz landscape are not addressed until Act 2, a slight conceptual hindrance, you’re bound to enjoy the unique history of the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North in this darker, deeper context. Having witnessed “Wicked” eight times from the Broadway original to the West End to numerous national tours, I can honestly say this production is among the best. Don’t miss it!

“Wicked” continues through June 24 at the Schuster Center, Second and Main Streets. Performances are Tuesday-Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Act One: 90 minutes; Act Two: 60 minutes. Tickets are $42-$121. For tickets or more information, call Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630 or visit www.ticketcenterstage.com

New Comedy HYSTERIA Opens Friday!

June 12, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

We had to change our plans for this Friday. Though I know many of you are anxious to see THE INTOUCHABLES, The Weinstein Company changed their plans and decided not to open the film in Dayton this weekend. We will eventually play the film, but an alternate date has not been determined.
Instead, we will open a new comedy with a great cast. It’s an English period piece set in the late 19th century…about the invention of the vibrator. Though HYSTERIA sounds like it could be tawdry material, it’s actually one of the most delightful comedies I’ve seen in quite some time.
If you still need to see THE KID WITH A BIKE, you’ll need to hurry down. This incredible film will only play through Thursday. THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL will stick around for another week.
Visit www.neonmovies.com for remaining showtimes for this week.

Synopsis for HYSTERIA: “Hysteria, a mischievously inspired romantic comedy set in the late 19th century, is based on the surprising truth of how Mortimer Granville came up with the world’s first electromechanical vibrator in the name of medical science. The film stars Academy Award nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy, alongside Jonathan Pryce, Rupert Everett and Felicity Jones.” (Sony Classics) This charming comedy is more sweet than naughty, and our NEON regulars should love this summer treat. Check out the fun website at this LINK!

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFy6cfPmjd4′]

On June 28 at 7:30, The Greater Dayton LGBT Center and The Miami Valley Pride Partnership will present a screening of the new documentary VITO. This wonderful new film is about the life of Vito Russo – author, film lover, leader and activist. In addition to being educational and enlightening, I found the movie to be utterly inspiring. I’m anxious to see it again. Tickets, just $8 each, are available at our box office. (Below is an image of Vito Russo and Bette Midler…her appearance in the film is quite special!) As an added note, VITO is the opening night film of The Frameline Film Festival this month in San Francisco. It is also the opening night film of Outfest in L.A. next month. THE NEON, in little ole’ Dayton, Ohio, will have this film right between San Francisco and Los Angeles…that’s pretty wonderful!

“Allow yourself to be immersed in a world where perception is redefined by a mysterious drug called I Razor. Dr. Gregory Fleer, a once brilliant scientist and the creator of I Razor, is transformed by his own experiment, along with a portion of the male population, into a band of telekinetic freaks who must negotiate their way through a world twisted beyond all recognition by their altered perceptions… Circus Devils (Robert Pollard of GUIDED BY VOICES and Todd Tobias) present: I RAZOR a New Film directed by Todd Tobias, starring Steve Five, Cory Race, and Brad Visker – with music by Circus Devils. Saturday July 14th at 12:30pm. Tickets are $5 and are first come first serve and open to the public. Buying a ticket will enter you into a raffle to win cool I Razor/Circus Devils stuff (I Razor Movie T Shirts, posters) before the movie, and I Razor tickets for this event will be specially made and collectable.” (taken from press release)

And don’t forget that your movie ticket gets you 15% off your food order at Sa-Bai…located directly behind THE NEON.

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Apps for Productivity

June 12, 2012 By Michelle Ton Leave a Comment

Smartphones are meant to help make our busy lives, a little less busy.  However, if you’ve just joined the ranks as a smart phone user, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the new features newly available to your mobile device.  Or perhaps you’re an avid smart phone user but you may be feeling a bit bogged down with all the apps you already have.  Lucky for you, at last Friday’s New Media Dayton meetup, the discussion was all about what apps are worth the investment – both time and money.

For iOS users (iPhone, iTouch, iPad), the options are endless.  To get an app, you have to go through the Apple App Store.  Android users on the other hand, don’t have quite the scale in their app store (called Google Play).  They do however, have a variety of places where they can get apps – one of which being the Amazon App Store.  Amazon offers one free app each day (and sometimes quite the bargain!).  In order to access, you’ll need to have the Google Marketplace app installed on your device.

One thing both OS users need to know is that it’s important to thoroughly read the review on an app – both good and bad – before downloading.  You may find some surprising things about the app, such as updates that break it, or that it’s actually a phony app.  Another piece of advice – if there’s a free version, download that before you make the plunge to plunk down some money.  It’s always better to try before you buy, even if the free one doesn’t give you everything you’re looking for right off the bat.

Now here’s the list of must try apps:

  • Evernote -Freemium –  great for capturing notes, voice, images – and then syncing them across platforms
  • Penultimate – $0.99 (iOS only) – great for handwritten notes
  • Dropbox – Freemium (pay for space) – great for sharing files with colleagues
  • iAnnotate – $9.99 – use this if you need to make notes on PDFs or sign forms
  • Square – fee based – if you want to accept mobile payments – turn your phone or iPad into a cash register!
  • Instagram – free – photoshop filters on your phone in a flash
  • Dark Sky – $3.99 – a cool new way to view the weather
  • Quick Office Pro – $14.99 – unofficial Microsoft Office’s mobile version; allows you to connect your other web docs accounts
  • SeekDroid – Freemium (Droid only) – similar to iOS’ Find my iPhone app, allows you to find your phone or remote wipe your phone from your PC

The Root Beer Stande, Dayton’s Essential Part of Summer

June 11, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Every summer has a “must do” activity.  When it comes to food in the Dayton Area, one such tradition is The Root Beer Stande.  It has everything you could want in a Food Adventure.  There is nostalgia, fun, good eats, and great drink.  Located at 1727 Woodman Drive, this restaurant has been a Dayton summertime staple since at least the 1960’s.  Originally an A&W Root Beer Stand, it changed to The Root Beer Stande decades ago, delivering great, casual food ever since.  Gone are the rollerskating waitresses, but much has remained the same over the decades.

A Dayton Summer Tradition – The Root Beer Stande

This place is  a “Drive-in” where patrons drive up, park and are served in their vehicle by “car-hops” who work on tips, just like waitresses.  There is  car port parking where oldies tunes are heard overhead on a speaker system.   Parking is also available in various uncovered spots around the building.  It is a great dining experience, and the young staff is very friendly.  When they are busy, you may have to wait a little bit to get your food, so don’t go there if you are in a hurry.   The fun begins when you pull in, and one of the cute servers slaps a small plastic sheet on patron’s windshields with a serving number.  After your order is taken, make sure you roll your window up a third, so they can place the tray with your food on the window as an overhang.  One little known tradition is that putting your car headlights on lets the server know that you are ready to leave and need to have your tray removed.

Happiness in a Mug

The Big Ragu have been frequenting this establishment since 1973 and has some recommendations.  First and foremost, nothing beats one of their cold root beers on a hot summer’s day.  In our opinion, this is the star of the menu and of course their namesake.  Homemade root beer with an original taste is why we love it.  Our tip here is to make sure and order the root beer in a glass mug, because it just doesn’t taste as good in paper “to go” cups.  The root beer here is so good, that your Food Adventurers have been known to order a second mug during the meal.

The Big Ragu loves a good hot dog and The Root Beer Stande serves up some decent “short dog” and “footlong” options.  We usually get the footlong hot dog.  It is simple and the taste is a great memory from our childhood.   Various topping choices include mustard, relish, chili, ketchup, onions and more.  Grab one and enjoy the view.

The Big Ragu loves their hamburger options and usually grabs a “Ladyburger.”  Yes, we realize the name of this smaller hamburger may be a bit embarrassing, but The Big Ragu is in touch with his feminine side from time to time.   The Big Ragu also recommends that you try the deep fried mushrooms.  Beware, these breaded mushrooms are made to order and served hot, so do not scald yourself by biting into one of these crispy, yet juicy treats.

Nothing fancy – just an irresistible footlong topped with chili and onions

Other favorite menu items include Root Beer Floats and Onion Rings.  The two page menu can be viewed by clicking here for page 1 and here for page 2.   The Root Beer Stande is not just for summer anymore!  The owners have extended season hours, making this spot on Woodman Drive available almost year-round!

Take some time to make The Root Beer Stande your destination this summer.  Kids love this place, and the family, fun atmosphere promises to produce memories that will last a lifetime.   Summer may heat up, but you can always cool down at The Root Beer Stande with a mug of Root Beer!

PLEASE VISIT FOOD ADVENTURES on FACEBOOK and “LIKE” THEM  BY CLICKING HERE!!

Have you been to Dayton’s favorite “Drive-In” Restaurant, The Root Beer Stande?  Please share some memories below!

Art is alive in Miamisburg

June 11, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Ron Rollins

Come experience a vibrant collaboration of art by three local Dayton artists and community leaders at an Opening Reception Friday, June 15th in Downtown Miamisburg. The Opening Reception kicks off the beginning of a special exhibit that will run through July 5th, featuring: Painting on Rusted Steel by Mike Elsass, Abstract Expressionism by Ron Rollins and Urban Photography by Larry Faulkner. Join us for hors d’oeuvres, wine, music and mingling as we celebrate the eclectic work of these three Dayton artists.

Ron Rollins of Kettering is an editor at the Dayton Daily News and paints colorful, highly gestural images in the style of the Abstract Expressionists he has studied and admires. He recently showed his work at the Dayton Circus arts collective’s Sideshow 7 exhibition at the Yellow Cab building in downtown Dayton. The Miamisburg show will be his second exhibition.

His work is multi-media on paper and canvas, usually combining pastel and conte crayon layered over with acrylic. He seeks to create unusual shapes and color combinations that are lyrical and moody — and which another local artist recently described as “pugilistic.”

Rollins’ work at the DDN includes nearly a decade as arts and entertainment editor, during which he wrote extensively about the local arts scene, including visual arts and the Dayton Art Institute. He is currently editor of the Ideas & Voices opinion pages.

Larry Faulkner

The type of photography Larry Faulkner focuses on is typically centered on urban landscapes.  An urban environment allows him to break down scenes to a minimalist view.  He looks for scenes that can be broken down to basic elements, yet still have a high impact for the viewer. This particular exhibition will emphasize Maimisburg’s downtown.  Faulkner believes most residents see their environment every day and, therefore, miss the appealing visual drama that exists in their downtown. With these photographs, Faulkner hopes to remind residents of the attractiveness of their built environment.

Mike Elsass paints abstract on rusted sheets of steel, and his art is spiritual and meditative. By painting, sponging, and sanding, the steel evolves until the final coating. Many pieces have over 40 coats of paint and glazing. To Mike, the steel represents strength, life’s elements, aging, imperfection and beauty. Mike’s spirit lies on the road; from his first series in Quebec, Canada to the Gulf Coast winter and the Louisiana swamps, he draws his energy from nature and life. The Arizona desert and the Kentucky countryside blend his art. His beautiful Ohio country barn loft and studios on Easy Avenue and Front Street in Dayton give him time to reflect and paint in solitude.  Mike’s art can also be seen his Oregon District art gallery The Color of Energy.

Experience a dynamic exhibit unlike any other, as these three artists blend their work into a collaborative series in the heart of Miamisburg.

Elysian Fields Books and More – New Bookstore, Old Friend

June 11, 2012 By Megan Cooper Leave a Comment

Elysian Fields Books and More is one of the newest stores popping up in the downtown area to provide a unique retail experience. Co-owner Brian Strawn has been working feverishly to create the right atmosphere and get the store open for regular hours. Strawn says, “Elysian Fields Books is a cozy little family friendly place tucked in the middle of the Oregon District. We are catering to those looking to spend time with friends and used books. We have some refreshments – coffee, tea, and goodies from neighborhood bakeries. We still haven’t named the two cats but we are taking suggestions.”

Stop by and visit the local owners, enjoy some refreshments, and browse the collection of mostly used and a few new books at 436 E. Fifth Street in the Oregon District.

A focus on friends is the theme for one of the early events at Elysian Fields Books. Jen Violi, the award-winning author of the popular YA fiction, Putting Makeup on Dead People, is coming back to Dayton to offer a reading. Violi graduated from the University of Dayton and set her debut novel in familiar places around town. This will be the first visit from Violi since local audiences first discovered the novel through Nicole Amsler’s  September 2011 review on DMM.

Don’t miss a great party at a new place with an old (or new!) friend – at Elysian Fields Books on Wednesday, June 13 at 7 PM. Light refreshments, a reading from the novel by the author, and a Q&A with some conversation will fill the recently opened bookstore. More on Jen here!

Sweeney’s Seafood House: Ocean Paradise!

June 8, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Grilled Blue Marlin

Sweeney’s Seafood House is revamping some things, while keeping old menu favorites.   Food Adventures spoke with one of the managing partners, Lisa Long, and learned Sweeney’s will be redecorating and even changing serving plates in the near future to keep up with the times.   Located in the heart of Centerville at the intersection of State Routes 725 and 48, Sweeney’s is one of the jewels of the Gem City.

Hungry Jax, Chef House and The Big Ragu absolutely love this dining spot for many reasons.  Hungry Jax enjoys their flounder and other fresh fish dinners which are baked, deep fried, grilled or broiled.  Fresh seafood in Dayton, Ohio?  You bet!  The new kitchen chef is bringing in whole fresh fish, which he then carves into fillets for a fresher tasting product.  Chef House is also excited to try some of the daily specials such as the recently featured grilled blue marlin and homemade soups like lobster bisque.  The Big Ragu can also be found sampling the handful of unique draft beers like Bell’s Oberon Ale which are rotated regularly.

The Best Raw Oysters in America

The Big Ragu prefers to sit in Sweeney’s bar area for some appetizers and the before mentioned draft beers.  The Big Ragu says the best raw oysters he has ever had in his life are the “Raw Chokers” at Sweeney’s Seafood House.  Ragu has had oysters at Emeril’s restaurant.   Ragu has eaten oysters from Rhode Island to Florida and high scale places in Vegas, but these are the best.  These gigantic Chesapeake Oysters are served over ice, on the half shell for $2.49 each, and worth the price for an incredible treat.  The Big Ragu also recommends that you try their fried calamari.  It is hand cut into strips and hand breaded.  The calamari is some of the best you will ever eat and sometimes so large that you could mistake a piece for a chicken strip!  The bartenders Doug and Sam are fantastic and very attentive.   Some little known trivia is that the bar at Sweeney’s and the connected cabinets were purchased from the old Tequila Willie’s restaurant that was near the Dayton Mall.

Located in Centerville

The Story of My Life – The Joys and Woes of Friendship

June 8, 2012 By Russell Florence, Jr. 1 Comment

Scott Knisley (l) and Jeff Sams in The Story of My Life (Contributed photo)

The Dayton Theatre Guild supplies a commendable regional premiere of composer Neil Bartram and librettist Brian Hill’s under-appreciated 2009 musical “The Story of My Life,” an intimate small town account of a lifelong friendship which closed on Broadway after five performances.

Delicately directed with musical seamlessness by Debra Kent, “Story” swiftly and intriguingly details the funny, joyous and heartbreaking kinship between successful author Thomas Weaver (Scott Knisley) and sensitive book seller Alvin Kelby (Jeff Sams), whose story begins at the end as Thomas prepares Alvin’s eulogy. From impressionable adolescence to the pains of adulthood, Thomas and Alvin’s emotive journey, grounded with a mutual affection for Frank Capra and Mark Twain, is a relatable one signifying a bond that appeared charmingly unbreakable yet ultimately fizzled into a haze of regret. A deeper subtext of unrequited love isn’t explored here, which could have given the production a stronger dramatic appeal and a pinch of unpredictability, but Kent and her cast embrace Hill’s smart, sentimental plot at face value without detriment.
Stepping into the musical theater realm, the believably bonded Knisley and Sams, primarily known for their work in straight plays, provide their best performances to date. Knisley skillfully interprets Thomas’ frustrated agony and overt arrogance as Alvin routinely cajoles him into a whirlwind of reflection not only about their childhood but the splinters within their friendship and the sheer acknowledgement that he was his muse. Sams, adopting an enthusiastic, childlike wonder recalling a tamer version of Will Ferrell, charms throughout while displaying a striking vulnerability. Musically, both are relatively comfortable within the confines of Bartram’s lilting yet vocally challenging, Sondheim-esque score. They tend to become pitchy when aiming for high notes, but are admirable on the whole as accompanied by Rebecca Nicely Childs. In fact, Sams memorably delivers a wonderfully poignant rendition of “People Carry On,” a beautiful ballad detailing Alvin’s reaction to the loss of his mother. Knisley strongly counters with “1876,” “The Butterfly” and the hauntingly melancholic “I Like It Here.”
“Relationships thrive or dissolve without our knowing why,” Thomas admits. “Story” doesn’t answer every question, but it deserves to be discovered for it certainly proves its worth at the Guild.

“The Story of My Life” continues through June 17 at the Dayton Theatre Guild, 430 Wayne Ave. Performances are Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Act One: 50 minutes; Act Two: 45 minutes. Raymonde Nicely Rougier will provide piano accompaniment for the remainder of the production. Tickets are $10-$17. Band Geeks! – Let Your Geek Flag Fly

June 7, 2012 By Russell Florence, Jr. 13 Comments

The cast of Band Geeks! (Photo by Scott J. Kimmins)

The Human Race Theatre Company concludes its outstanding 25th anniversary season with a terrifically entertaining Midwest premiere of the charming, comical and touching musical “Band Geeks!,” a feel-good collaboration by Tommy Newman, Gordon Greenberg, Gaby Alter and Mark Allen innately recalling “Glee” without being a witless copycat.

Set in the late 1990s in Northeastern Ohio, “Band Geeks!,” perfectly cast with actor-musicians by Human Race producing artistic director Kevin Moore and fluidly directed and meticulously choreographed by Greg Hellems, is a warmly credible slice of life about adolescent oddballs making their way through high school hell as participants of a belittled, underfunded marching band. Whether forced to rehearse in a closet or parking lot, the close-knit, 10-member Cuyahoga High Marching Beavers, striving to uphold its motto that “nobody marches alone,” desperately attempts to remain harmonious despite budget cuts, pessimism from prickly Principal Dixon (Jennifer Joplin), the inclusion of a troubled jock from another school, and the jealousy that arises when puppy love threatens to ruin friendships.
Librettists Greenberg and Newman smoothly frames the simple yet delightfully droll action (accented with giggle-inducing school announcements) around the well-defined, three-dimensional trio of band captain Elliott Goodman (Mykal Kilgore), a shy tubist living in the shadow of his popular meteorologist brother, Laura Jane Kirk (Katie Klaus), a flautist and Elliott’s best friend whose parents prefer her to pursue medicine, and percussionist Jake Fowler (Zach Cossman), whose shady history hinders him from total assimilation. The show is also conceived with predictable teen archetypes from goth to gay with a foreign exchange student thrown in for good measure, but these characters are sharply written with hilarious authenticity. In fact, I wish more of them had solos, particularly flamboyant trombonist Alvin Freeman (an amusing Tyler J. Baranski). Alvin’s colorful opinions and his implied attraction to “Dungeons and Dragons” fan Kyle Watson (Jon Kovach) screams to be sung. Given that band director Mr. Hornsby (John Robert Armstrong) has the weakest material in Newman, Alter and Allen’s largely pleasant and bouncy score, his musical moments should have been transferred to more appealing characters, which extends to Nicole Murray (Sarah Agar, so luminous in Wright State University’s “The Light in the Piazza”), Spitz (Richard Cerato), Natasha Vosavich, (Liz Fye), Stewart Dixon (John Fisher) and Molly Winerman (Jennifer Roehm).
Kilgore, Klaus and Cossman are specifically associated with some of the best musical numbers, which resonated despite muddled, unbalanced sound concerns at the performance attended rendering some lyrics unintelligible. The excellent Kilgore, blessed with an absolutely dynamic, R&B-tinged tenor, leads the toe-tapping “Twirler Girl” (be prepared for his final note!) and joins Cossman for the surprisingly spine-tingling “Loser,” a thrillingly divisive squabble (think “Take Me or Leave Me” from “Rent”) culminating in unexpectedly tender common ground. The endearingly introverted Klaus, a lovely flautist, belts a genuinely sincere “Lost in the Brass.” Cossman, an impressive drummer who will join Blue Man Group this fall, duly receives applause while spotlighted in the sprightly ensemble number “Team Player.”
In addition, Scott J. Kimmins’ efficient set briskly establishes various locations, particularly transforming rows of bleachers into a school bus. Janet G. Powell’s fine costumes appropriately reflect the era and elevate the finale. Musical director Scot Woolley leads a proficient off stage band.
Truly topical with bubbly tunes and a vital message of self-acceptance and empowerment appealing to every demographic, “Band Geeks!” winningly restores faith in the value of being true to your school and yourself.

“Band Geeks!” continues through June 17 at the Loft Theatre, 126 N. Main St. Performances are Wednesday-Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Act One: 60 minutes; Act Two: 58 minutes. Tickets are $18.50-$40. A talkback discussion will take place following the Sunday, June 10 performance. Coming up in Dayton Theatre, 6/7- 6/22

June 7, 2012 By Sarah Caplan Leave a Comment

Y’know…everyone’s all concerned about the apparently impending Zombie apocalypse. I think the Robot apocalypse is much scarier and more realistic. Case in point? The gremlins inside The Interwebz decided to take the round-up I wrote last week for you all, and hold it hostage until such time as I had successfully appeased the Computer Lords. Having now done something I’m not proud of including motherboards and mice, I can present my edited and updated round up! Wicked Witches, Band Geeks, Merry Murderesses and more! The coming weeks bring us all manner of entertainment!

Now Playing!

Wicked The Schuster Center The Skinny: Ever wonder what happened before Dorothy and her little dog came to Oz? How did Elphaba become so very wicked? How did Galinda become Glinda, and get so good? Look no further. Wicked has returned to town and I am assured that tickets are still available, so do not despair! Dates: Elphie et alia will be performing at the Schuster Center through June 24th. Tickets: For all information, please visit the Victoria Theatre Association website at www.victoriatheatre.com

Opening This Week!

Band Geeks!

The Human Race Theatre Company The Skinny: Like a live-action episode of Glee, only for the Marching Band crowd. The Cuyahoga Marching Beavers are 75 trombones short of a Music Man, and there’s only one cornet left, but while the band may be close to extinction, its spirit isn’t. This show will bring laughs to anyone who was ever in a marching band. Or new someone in a marching band. Or once saw a marching band. Dates: Opens Thursday, May 31st and runs through June 17th. Does your dad love half-time shows? Get him tickets for Fathers Day! Tickets: For tickets and more information, please visit the Human Race Theatre Company website at www.humanracetheatre.org   Reviews: DMM/On Stage Dayton

The Story of My Life

The Dayton Theatre Guild The Skinny: Musicals are not frequently found at the Guild, but this 2-person “boutique” musical is an exception. It’s the story of a life-long friendship, told mostly in song as Thomas struggles to write a eulogy for his friend Alvin. Dates: Running through Sunday, June 17th (another great Father’s Day idea! Live theatre makes the best gift!) Tickets: For tickets and more information, please visit the Dayton Theatre Guild website at www.daytontheatreguild.or   Review: DMM/On Stage Dayton

ExtrABBAganza! – The music of ABBA, live in Concert!

Opening Soon!

Chicago

Beavercreek Community Theatre The Skinny: Set in 1920s Chicago, Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless hubby to take the rap, until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream”: fame, fortune and acquittal. Dates: Opening June 15th, running 2 weekends and closing on June 24th. Tickets: Ticketing and other information can be found online at www.bctheatre.org

Bare/Stop Kiss

Playhouse South The Skinnies: Bare and Stop Kiss are two separate pieces being performed on alternating nights. Both are love stories. Stop Kiss is a little more traditional; Two people meet, fall in love and overcome obstacles to be together. These two people just happen to be women. In the case of Bare, which performed an excerpt at Dayton’s Pride celebration downtown, the story is of two roommates at a Catholic school, their love and how it shapes the lives around them. The Dates: Stop Kiss performs June 14th, 16th and 22nd. Bare bows June 15th, 21st and 23rd. All shows are at 8pm. Tickets: Ticketing information can be found online at www.playhousesouth.org

FutureFest!

When last I touched base about Dayton’s annual playwright’s competition, we were still one play shy of six finalists, due to a last-minute line-up change. That’s all been settled and now the plays in contention are: A Political Woman; Provenance; Nureyev’s Eyes; Curve; Excavation and This Rough Magic. Weekend pass tickets are currently on-sale. As a side note to those who have been FutureFest regulars in the past few years (weekend warriors, as I like to think of them), the Playhouse has a wonderful new air conditioner that I can tell you works beautifully! As of this time, the official auditions have ended and most of the shows are beginning to announce their casts. Further information, including cast breakdowns; show slots; directors and other notices, as well as ticketing information, is available at the FutureFest portion of the Dayton Playhouse website, www.daytonplayhouse.com   That’s about all for now. I’ll be back with you in a couple weeks with updates about Future Fest, Free Shakespeare and the other goodies that get us through our long, hot summer!

Ralphie May “Too Big To Fail” in Dayton

June 5, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Ralphie May’s popularity exploded after the success of the first season of NBC’s hit reality series, “Last Comic Standing”. Long-time fans of Ralphie’s stand-up were joined by countless new fans when America thought he was robbed of the winner’s title. Despite the show’s outcome, Ralphie’s special brand of comedy combines the familiar elements of hip-hop and topical comedy with a dash of southern down-home flavor and quick wit making Ralphie May one of the most popular comedians in the country.

His first DVD, appropriately titled “Just Correct,” went PLATINUM! Released on February 10th of 2004 by Melee Entertainment, a division of DreamWorks, the collection has been described as “fresh and very, very funny.” The DVD also includes footage of his USO Tour to Iraq where he could be seen swimming in Saddam Hussein’s pool.

His special brand of humor and incredible timing has allowed him to cross social, cultural, and ethnic barriers and has earned him roles in such films as FOR DA LOVE OF MONEY and GAS, to name a few of several independent productions. Ralphie has worked as an actor, writer and producer on ESPN’s Mohr Sports starring Jay Mohr and had four appearances on CBS’s The Late Late Show w/ Craig Kilborn as well as eleven appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live.  He has been seen on Tough Crowd, The Man Show and MTV’s Bash as well as in guest-starring roles on numerous television shows including NBC’s Whoopie. In an appearance on The Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno he received a standing ovation, the first comedian in 10 years to receive this honor. The New York Times raves, “Ralphie is phenomenal…”The Washington Post describes his comedy style as a “Tour de Force.” At the age of seventeen, Ralphie entered a talent show, to which the winner would get to open for Sam Kinison. A dream came true… Ralphie won the contest and after the show, Sam turned to Ralphie and said, “That was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”

A long way from that first night opening for Sam Kinison, Ralphie’s 2nd DVD/CD just recorded in Knoxville, Tennessee April 2006.  “Girth of a Nation” was released in the fall of 2006. His new Comedy Central Hour Special, “Too Big To Ignore” just aired in the spring. Ralphie is currently touring the Nation’s finest Theatres and Comedy Clubs.

On Tuesday July 24th, 2012 7:30pm, Ralphie May will perform at the historic Victoria Theatre ( doors opening at 6:30 PM)  Reserved tickets will go on sale at 10:00 am on Friday, June 8th.  Please call (937) 228-3630 or visit www.ticketcenterstage.com to order tickets.
